An MLG-developed FPS is 'inevitable' says CEO

An MLG-developed FPS is 'inevitable' says CEO screenshot

It's interesting to think that the games you find popular as eSports don't specifically start out being made to appeal to pro-gamers. Speaking to the Penny Arcade Report, MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni says it is "inevitable" his company will develop a game specifically for the eSports field.

What's interesting to note is that DiGiovanni explains how things that one would expect in a popular multiplayer FPS -- such as killstreaks, persistent leveling, and perks -- actually make it harder for them to gain popularity in the eSports field. He remarks that an MLG FPS would be more akin to Quake or Unreal Tournament

DiGiovanni also points to a multi-screen approach so that coaching and tactics can be clearly displayed for the players (and presumably the spectators, too). This would be a real neat addition as giving the audience a more in-depth analysis to what, I assume, would be frantic and fast gameplay. I'm really interested to see what MLG's moves makes into game development; whatever the put out would be worth playing, pro gamer or not.

Hey gang! Lots of crazy industry news today, which is less fun than actual news about games.

Today we've got new BioShock Infinite and SimCity trailers to show off, good news on the THQ/Vigil Homefront, and sad news for Epic Mickey studio Junction Point. Also, Dead Space 3 is getting a bare-bones PC port, and Frostbite 2.0 is coming to Mac!

Demo reel discovered for Ubisoft's unannounced 'Osiris'

Demo reel discovered for Ubisoft's unannounced 'Osiris' screenshot

Straight from NeoGAF is this rough demo video of Ubisoft Montreal's latest project, "Osiris." The news was discovered shortly after it was revealed that Ubisoft is putting the Prince of Persia series on the back burner.

A Prince of Persia-like game was hinted at during the last E3, but it turns out instead to be a new IP set with an Egyptian theme. After some footage of a mo-cap session for the game, we catch brief glimpses at concept art featuring an insect plague, an earthquake, a pharaoh, and some other strange person / creature that quickly flutters across the screen.

This is such an early peek from the Assassin's Creed studio that we don't even know what platforms it'll run on. Again, you can find that video over here.

Kick off the Crysis 3 multiplayer beta with a new trailer

Kick off the Crysis 3 multiplayer beta with a new trailer screenshot

Remember when I told you that the Crysis 3 beta was coming? Well, it's here on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and Crytek has a new trailer to help get things started. In the beta, you'll have the opportunity to play the modes Hunter and Crash Site on the Museum and Airport maps.

If you're playing on PC, make sure that you check out this landing page for the latest beta Nvidia drivers, to ensure that you're running the beta at the best possible performance rate.

As for the game itself, I really hope it has more intriguing modes like Hunter mode, otherwise I think my interest will probably wane quickly.

PSA: Skyward Sword is $20 at Target until this Saturday

PSA: Skyward Sword is $20 at Target until this Saturday screenshot

You know how Nintendo is known for never reducing the price of their first-party titles until years later under a re-release line of games? Well, this week is one of those extremely rare cases where a retailer is significantly reducing the price of a Nintendo game, and a huge one at that. All week until this coming Saturday, 2/2/2013, you can nab The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for only $19.99 (note: it looks like this is in-store only).

There's also good word out there that a ton of the copies still have the "limited" Symphony of the Goddesses CD that was packaged in as a short run of the original copies of the game. If you've never owned a Wii, and just got yourself a Wii U recently, I would not only recommend you buy Skyward Sword, but that you should go out and freaking buy it this very second (in addition to considering these fine Wii titles as well).

Be your own Don in Omerta - City of Gangsters

Be your own Don in Omerta - City of Gangsters screenshot

Organised crime sim Omerta - City of Gangsters is giving you the chance to be the Don of Atlantic City, complete with your own crew of gangsters and on-the-nose nicknames. I like the look of this character creator, specifically the option to create a backstory for your mob boss. Here's hoping for an option to be the poor kid who turned to a life of crime but also has a heart of gold -- oh, and who looks just like Steve Buscemi.

No one's really tried the whole "organised crime sim" genre in years, not since Gangsters: Organized Crime. Hopefully the mix of turn-based combat and management sim will work well together and you can run Atlantic City like your own personal kingdom of crime. Tommy guns and speakeasies for all!

Rebellion has a foreboding teaser for its next PC game

Rebellion has a foreboding teaser for its next PC game screenshot

Developer Rebellion sent out a spooky teaser trailer for its new game with some clues as to what it might be about: "...one man is utterly alone amidst the chaos of war. But there are worse things to fear than bombs and bullets here." My "occult" senses are tingling!

Curiously, the logo is a variation of the one used for Sniper Elite V2, otherwise known as the game where you can make people's crotches explode. (Err, one of the games to do that.) Perhaps this is a Sniper Elite spin-off? I'm definitely getting the sense that there will be something otherworldly in our crosshairs, which has me interested.

Rebellion also offered this message: "With the debut date of 14th February 2013, PC fans will soon get the chance to discover for themselves just what is in store for those brave enough to venture into the 'Totraum'. Heil Gotterdammerung!"

Check out this Pokemon-inspired puzzler, Puzzle Monsters screenshot

Indie game developer Mr. Podunkian has a new project in the works that melds some of the best elements of Pokémon and Puzzle Bobble. I know what you're saying: "go on..."

The ideas are combined in the form of a puzzle game, which features three creatures per side, and allows players to not only play a "matching" clone, but choose abilities from different monsters to change the outcome. Essentially, it's part RPG as well.

You can see the heavy Pokémon references in the character designs, the element choices, and the battle text at the top of the screen. Right now, it looks like this is set for a potential indie PC release somewhere down the line, but Podunkian notes that he is developing it in Unity, so a mobile release is possible. Bring it on!

Mini-MAGFest! Game Over Austin on February 3

Mini-MAGFest! Game Over Austin on February 3 screenshot

MAGFest 11 has come and gone, but as James Hetfield once said, the memory remains. Why should we have to wait a whole year for the next event, though? Why can't MAGFest be every day, or at least every few weeks?

MAGFest organizers have begun setting up ancillary events -- mini-MAGFests, if I may -- starting with "Game Over Austin" at 7 PM CST this Sunday, February 3, at the red7 in Austin, Texas. Five music acts will be performing, including the recently assembled Lords of Thunder and nerdcore favorite Mega Ran. Descendents of Erdrick will be in the house as well, sporting a brand-new lineup following the old team's disbandment. Finally, two new players in the MAGFest scene, Dr. Awkward and URIZEN, round out the lot.

I wish I could attend -- I'm still super pissed that I missed Lords of Thunder's MAGFest set no thanks to YOU, Dale North (don't fire me)! Alas, I'm stuck here in my podunk South Florida town, watching as everyone else has a good time. Let me live vicariously through you guys!

Admission is open to all ages, and tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

Classic platformer Flashback may return very soon

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST

Classic platformer Flashback may return very soon screenshot

Flashback Origins will update the classic and highly influential cinematic platformer Flashback for downloadable services on consoles and PC, according to a French blog that must have way cooler friends than me.

If the provided image is to be believed, this update adds a HUD and places a greater emphasis on weaponry -- that sound, that you heard just now, is the sound of a thousand Flashback fans groaning. Trying to stay optimistic, I see the game more as a much wanted (by me at least) sequel to Shadow Complex.

But then I must address that the rumored developer of this title is none other than Amy developer VectorCell which, I can assure you, is nothing to be optimistic about -- BUT VectorCell is headed by Flashback's original director Paul Cuisset, so who better to ruin a classic than its own creator? This will be his second attempt at a Flashback follow-up, predated by unreleased Game Boy Advance title Flashback Legends.

I feel like a whirlwind of excitement and disappointment just rushed through me, and all for information and an image that may not be true. Let's hope we'll hear more about Flashback Origins soon. Or not. I don't even know anymore.

Character progression in Fire Emblem: Awakening explained

Character progression in Fire Emblem: Awakening explained screenshot

Fire Emblem: Awakening is almost here, guys. Just one more week; you can make it. To get you ready and up to speed, Nintendo has produced a new video that completely explains the character progression system in the latest installment of the strategy RPG franchise.

I have never played too much of the series, so from what I can tell everything here is pretty standard fare: get into battles, win, and everyone will level up accordingly. There's also the class change system, but that's the gist of it.

I've never been quite into Fire Emblem (or anything strategy focused, for that matter), but I think I ought to give Awakening a shot. This, along with the recent combat tutorial video, did a fantastic job of explaining things so I could finally feel like jumping into the series wouldn't require a ginormous learning curve.

SimCity will support cross-play between Mac and PC screenshot

Mac users will be able to get their hands all over SimCity starting this Spring. This isn't merely a port either, as Maxis is having a fully native version of the game built for the Mac OS. And best of all, there will be cross-platform play between the Mac and PC versions.

Additionally, EA is promoting their Digital Deluxe version of SimCity. It will feature European landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and Bradenburge Gate, plus themed vehicles such as French police cars, British buses, and German trains.

Check out my hands-on preview of SimCity for more on the city building simulation.

APB Reloaded Celebrates a Year as a Top-Five Free2Play Title on Steam

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 04:04 PM PST

APB War

Reloaded Games®, a leading publisher and developer of free2play® massively multiplayer online games, announced that the Company's pivotal open-world third person action game APB Reloaded™ continues to be a top-five free2play title on Steam®, a position held for more than a year. Launching to Valve's leading platform for digital content distribution and management back in December of 2011, APB Reloaded has demolished a major milestone in player loyalty, typically reserved for the industry's publishing elite.
As of the beginning of the first quarter of 2013, APB Reloaded resides as the fourth most-popular free2play game offered by Steam, besting gaming juggernauts and iconic brands like Lord of the Rings Online™, Star Trek Online, and DC Universe™. Thanks to a loyal player community and the hard work of Reloaded Productions, APB Reloaded has proven that addictive gameplay, and solid mechanics and infinite customization continues to resonate with new players and returning San Paro veterans alike.

APB Rocket Launch

"Being a visionary publisher usually means that everyone continually tells you that you won't succeed, and the run-away global popularity of APB Reloaded is validation that we have found something very special in the free2play space," said Reloaded Games' Chief Marketing Officer Rahul Sandil. "Industry pundits decried our decision to secure the rights to All Points Bulletin and make the game free2play. Game critics and non-supporters doomed APB Reloaded to obscurity once we officially launched, yet here we are, a year later, with global sell-through of the retail version in Europe, licensed distribution in Brazil and Russia, and the game remains a top five most-popular downloaded game on Steam."

In the coming weeks, APB Reloaded will introduce the Settling the Score update, with an improved District instancing mechanic, a new scoring system that balances arrests, kills and mission objectives, and new way for players to choose their own spawn point after death. Fans of the All Points Bulletin universe may want to remain alert; word on the street is that the rumor of an all-new APB experience may be revealed in coming months.

Grepolis Gets Musical

Browser game developer InnoGames just published the first theme song of a God featured in its strategic browser game Grepolis. Grepolis will soon receive an update, containing several music themes and sound effects – including songs for specific gods. The live recording of the main theme, covered by the famous Brandenburg State Philharmonics with over 60 musicians, can also be found on YouTube.

The new in-game sounds will give players audible feedback for actions, which is intended to increase the enjoyment and atmosphere of the title. InnoGames plans to present more audio previews in the coming weeks.

Mercenaries Revealed for Ecol Tactics Online

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 02:33 PM PST

GamesCampus has announced details today on the four NPC mercenary classes available in Ecol Tactics Online.

“Players don’t enter the battlefield alone, and choosing the right mercenary to complement them is completely up to the player,” said Elliott Coward, Project Lead for Ecol Tactics Online. “Mercenaries become permanent party members – just like in a full client-based MMORPG, except Ecol Tactics Online is immediately accessible in a browser.”

Appearance, costumes, and customization are free for the player to edit for these four classes:

Cleric
Reading about strategy, triage, and practicing on paper cuts and boo boos wasn’t enough for this young buck. He left his family’s ridiculously large estate behind, along with all its wealth to join the Mercenaries Alliance. His craving for life experience leads him to Vermonics. Keeping his allies on their feet with heals and helping them recover from poisons, paralysis, Clerics find safety in the back of a group.

Mage
Trained in the ways of magic for decades, The Mage harnesses her power to control the battlefield. The Mage always carries a Staff but has been known to use wands from time to time. Summon powerful minions, control your opponents with spells, and deal damage over a large area. The Mage is nearly 120 years old but you won’t find a wart on this witch; it’s amazing what the arcane arts can do to your skin!

Fighter
Confident, brave and maybe a bit foolhardy, the fighter wields Swords, Daggers, Sabers, Katanas — basically anything sharp and pointy. Fighters control the battlefield by knocking opponents around into just the right position for the rest of his crew to finish them off! Fighters excel at positioning and melee area of effect attacks.

Archer
A silent huntress, bow always at the ready, agile and swift she attacks from long range with her formidable strength. Arrows imbued with magic apply poisons which stun, weaken and damage opponents. She excels at single target damage and crowd control, and has the longest range attacks in Ecol Tactics Online!

Guild Wars dev diaries discuss new rewards, achievement system, and other changes
Two new dev diaries outline a few changes coming to Guild Wars 2, including a new reward currency and updates to the achievement system. Players earn the new reward currency -- the laurel -- each day that they complete their daily achievement category and again when the monthly achievement is completed. Rewards such as unique minis and WvW blueprints can then be purchased. The achievement system itself is getting a new tracking UI and daily achievements.

Dungeon mechanics are also getting tweaked. In phase one of the changes, the "res-rushing" mechanic (resurrecting at a waypoint immediately and running back to the fight) is being abolished. Waypoints can no longer be used in dungeons except when the party wipes or has withdrawn from the fight. In phase two, the devs will be making changes to the enemies and bosses within the dungeons.

Greg Zeschuk on leaving BioWare: 'You just get tired of it after a while'

Greg ZeschukWhen BioWare docs Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka announced their departure from the gaming giant they co-founded, theories as to why ranged from fan negativity to Star Wars: The Old Republic's performance to simple burnout.

In a new interview with Polygon, Zeschuk says in his case it boiled down to a lack of passion. "I just wasn't as into it as I was originally," he said.

"Everything's a factor," Zeschuk continued. "There's nothing that's not a factor, but there's no single one thing. I think the best way I can describe is: Do the same thing for twenty years and it's very, very intense. It's very high pressure. It's very high stress. It's challenging. It's sometimes rewarding and sometimes it's not. And you just get tired of it after awhile. That is probably the easiest way to for me to describe it. Sometimes you just need to change things."

The Daily Grind: Do you like the idea of browser-based MMOs?

      Posted: 29 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST

My biggest irritation with City of Steam's client was that I couldn't get a decent screenshot of the game.
City of Steam has struck me as a darn good game each time I've played it, but it gets an extra layer of surprise added on by the fact that it's entirely played in my browser. It would be good even if I had to download and install a client, but the browser-based nature of it means that it's lightweight enough for weaker computers such as my laptop; Anywhere I can get a connection, I can play the game.

Of course, the browser client also lacks certain frills, and there's a certain innate strangeness to having a game as part of the browser when we've grown accustomed to games as separate things. But it's not the only game to exist solely in a browser, and other games (such as Runes of Magic and Second Life) have experimented with browser-based clients in the past. So do you like the idea of browser-based games? Or is it just a vaguely interesting novelty as far as you're concerned?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Path of Exile entered open beta this week as a peak of 56,700 simultaneous players piled into the servers to check the game out. Open beta brought with it the final character wipe, so for all intents and purposes, the game has now released. Upcoming first-person MOBA SMITE similarly opened its doors to the public last Thursday and released a series of new gameplay updates and graphical overhauls.

League of Legends issued permanent game bans to two extremely antisocial professional players, effectively removing Team Solo Mebdi from upcoming European competitive tournaments. Dota 2 moved to curb antisocial harassment behaviour this week by implementing new privacy features to stop players' stats from being tracked by third-party rating websites.

Heroes of Newerth announced some major upcoming graphical and gameplay overhauls with its massive Patch 3.0 update that will go live in just a few days. The update aims to revamp the map graphics and introduce bots for players to play against in a new co-op mode. Rise of Immortals continued development with the release of its new mage immortal Undine, and Blizzard announced that its upcoming MOBA Blizzard All-Stars is still in development.

With sustained increases in daily participation, the game is richer and more alive than ever before."

Stahl looked back over the accomplishments and milestones of 2012, including Star Trek Online's transition to a free-to-play format.

For the game's third anniversary, the team is releasing a featured episode on Thursday that will have a special reward for those who play it between January 31st and February 14th. Neverwinter reveals preorder packs, beta weekend dates
Neverwinter's closed beta is closer than you might think, as Cryptic has just posted the dates of the three weekend events coming up. The beta weekends begin on February 8th, with successive ones starting March 8th and March 22nd, and will be available to residents of North America and Europe to those lucky enough to be accepted.

To tempt people into shedding some cash up front, Cryptic is prepared to dangle guaranteed beta invites to those who purchase a $60 or $200 pre-order Founder's Pack. In addition to the closed beta access, the $60 version contains a head-start to the open beta, a title, an armored horse mount, a mask, and a direwolf companion. Darkfall Holy Wars' new world of Agon is front and center in today's developer diary video hosted by World Lead Nikos Kasolos. In it, he describes the intense graphics update that was required to bring Agon to life, including textures, lighting, and even the ability to hide in the shadows now, thanks to a new darkness improvement.

As for new content, Agon launches 50 holdings, 30 cities, and 20 hamlets all "built from scratch." You can find out much more about this new update through the six-minute video embedded after the cut.

Chaos Theory: Reacting to TSW's restructuring and relocation

Chaos Theory Reacting to TSW restructuring and relocation
          It's a conspiracy, I tell you!

It has to be; every time The Secret World manages to better secure its footing, the ground starts shaking underneath again. This time, the upheaval comes in the form of the relocation of Funcom's development teams for its three MMOs to Raleigh, North Carolina. Of course, TSW isn't the only game affected by this restructuring, but after the other turbulence buffeting the game in its so-far short life (layoffs, insider trading accusations, changes in key roles), it's hard not to think that the game just can't catch a break. And dangit, it deserves one!

Initially, I had other thoughts to share for for today, but after that announcement last Friday, my mind has mostly been on this topic (along with a slew of related "re-" words). How much will this affect the game I adore? Who all will be lost from the team? And what, if anything, can I do to help support the game during this transition? Join me as I explore these questions and possibly discover a solution or two.

The Nexus Telegraph: Giving trust for WildStar

You can trust that someone will eventually turn on you, it's a matter of when and why.
Some of you are probably well aware that I used to write this site's column about City of Heroes. And you may also be aware that I'm talking about that column in the past tense because it's objectively impossible to write anything about City of Heroes in the present tense. NCsoft closed the doors to the game and left me more than a mite unhappy with that decision.

Some of you are also well aware that NCsoft is the company behind WildStar. That might seem like a bit of a cognitive disconnect -- why in the world would I trust a company that just made me very unhappy?

Lots of reasons. I can understand the vitriol and the anger, but I also think they're just a wee bit misplaced. There are plenty of good reasons to cheer for this game even though I harbor no small amount of bitterness about those we lost before.

I've said it once and I'll say it over and over again: It can be hard to write about a game in the weeks leading up to a scheduled event or content release. This week is no different. Star Trek Online's team is nose down into the final touches of the new material being released next week for the game's third anniversary, and new information about any of it has slowed to a crawl.

However, in the interim, we have been given the information on the contents of Star Trek Online's newest lockbox as well as the specs on the new ships either contained in the boxes or available in the Lobi store. I also had the opportunity to take part in the most recent Q XP Weekend event and actually found myself having a lot of fun.
