You all probably already know this, but I'm super good at video games. I've previously explained how to play Curse of the NecroDancer as well as Curses N' Chaos. Now I have people come up to me on the streets to thank me for saving their gaming lives.
Well, consider yourself blessed because I am about to bestow upon you the best way to play the current Hitman beta. This is a series known for various solutions to a single objective, but I have come across what is easily the best way to play. Check it out for yourself.
How long is too long to spend reading Hideki Kamiya's Twitter feed? (I'm asking for a friend.) If you're unfamiliar with the Platinum Games designer's online antics, his pinned tweet, "REPEAT for insects: Don't try too hard," has a little doodle to set the stage.
Asked if he would ever consider letting Bandai Namco include Bayonetta in the cameo-laden tactical RPG series Project X Zone, Kamiya responded "Blocked." Wait, no. That's not right!
He actually commented "Not bad," and added that "There was an offer, but I said no. Now I kinda regret that I said no."
Bayonetta alongside the likes of Captain Commando, Phoenix Wright, Jill Valentine, Dante, Ryo Hazuki, Ulala, and Segata Sanshiro? I can't see that not being cool. If there's a chance for a team-up in a future installment, I'd also want Rodin and Enzo.
After a month-long renovation, Nintendo's flagship store in Rockefeller Center is open to the public again with a fresh look and a new name. It's now simply Nintendo NY. Mario and Luigi ditched the princesses to help with the ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this morning.
We'll undoubtedly have someone on staff make the trip out to stock up on plush toys (Chris? Holmes? Patrick?), but for now, we can get a sense of the store from these opening-day pictures. It's not the same as being there in person, I know, but at least we're well-rested.
Last year's E3 Eve surprise reveal and release of Fallout Shelter was a good move for Bethesda. The mobile game was an immediate hit, and it didn't take long before it was wildly profitable. Within days, it had supplanted Candy Crush Saga on the list of that week's top earners, and that game makes money hand-over-fist.
Given that success, it's easy to see how Bethesda may be lured back by the mobile sector's siren song. Speaking with GameSpot at DICE this week, Bethesda game director Todd Howard directly cited the performance of Fallout Shelter and said "We're gonna do more."
Howard didn't elaborate much on any specifics that Bethesda might have in mind. He just explained that the developer wants to keep in mind that the games "have to be appropriate for who we are (as a company). It (has to have) a bit more meat on the bone than other things like it."
Apart from that, Howard basically just confirmed it was happening. This falls right in line with the studio that Bethesda formed in Montreal last December that, among other things, is said to focus on mobile gaming.
Bethesda is hardly the first publisher to go this route. A notable example is Square Enix, who has done a fine job adapting its popular properties into mobile titles like Lara Croft GO and Hitman GO; if it's proven to make money, expect others to follow suit.
Last summer, Destructoid promoted a blog by the magnificent OverlordZetta that asked what the deal was with Compile Heart. The question was a rhetorical one. OverlordZetta is a fan of the Japanese developer and used the premise to figure out why the company has such a vocal army of detractors. It’s a good read, but the short of it is not every game has to appeal to every gamer, and you shouldn’t fervently hate something just because it’s not for you.
That’s a concept I wholeheartedly agree with and one I kept in mind as I made my way through Megadimension Neptunia VII.
Three One Zero's space catastrophe is making good on its promise of a first quarter 2016 release, but just barely. The developer announced today that Adr1ft will be available on PC and Oculus VR on March 28. Just three days to spare!
That release date puts Adr1ft at a day-and-date launch alongside the Oculus Rift, as the long-awaited virtual reality peripheral ships its first batch of consumer-ready headsets next month. Not everyone will be lucky enough to nab the $600 Rift that quick, though; the earliest orders should arrive in March, but there's a delay on the second shipment.
Truthfully, VR is probably the way Adr1ft is meant to be played. I found it to be immersive, stunning, and unsettling when I tried it. But, Jordan had a go without the headset and found it to be just as stressful. Gear up for some anxiety regardless of which method you prefer.
Electronic Arts once famously asked in an ad “can a computer make you cry?” Today, we have the answer. Just try to watch the latest emotionally charged trailer for Strafe, the goriest shooter of 1996, without shedding a tear or two. Today, everyone is an All Star.
Ugh, I just don't like Bo' Rai Cho. I've been playing a lot of MKX lately and I'm actually pretty excited for Kombat Pack 2 and the MK XL update. The other characters in the pack look great, reports out of the improved online beta sound amazing, and I'm hoping some of the balance changes will shake things up. But Bo' Rai Cho? Man, fuck Bo' Rai Cho. I'm not looking forward to putting up with a bunch of puke and farts with my blood and guts (which I guess is kind of weird when I say it out loud).
The NetherRealm team broke down the fart-king's moves and different variations in the latest Kombat Kast. Dragon Breath grants him a variety of fire-based attacks (and yes you can light the fart clouds on fire), Drunken Master allows Bo' to take a nip of his flask mid-match to gain access to different moves (and a charmingly tipsy idle animation), while Bartitsu gives him an annoying-looking stick to beat people with. So, he's a belligerent fat dude with no manners, drinks too much, and will hit you with his cane. Sounds like why I stopped going to family reunions.
You can watch the entire archived stream here, or check out the highlight clip of him fighting with Smoke below to get a feel for what he's about. You can catch a sample of his Brutalities and one of his Fatalities in there too. Personally, this clip just made me want to see more of Smoke.
"Not another MOBA!" many of you are probably saying, but let me be the first to tell you that Gigantic is not another League of Legends clone. I loved it when I played it at PAX East 2015, and I love it now that I've been playing it in beta. You might love it, too.
[Update: I now have info as to how the amiibo actually works within the game. As expected, it does unlock the Cave of Shadows dungeon. Players can essentially access this area almost immediately, after completing the tutorial zone. Going to the inventory screen will allow you to use an amiibo figure, including the Wolf Link toy. It will then prompt you to save your game, and instantly transport you to the cave. It is not located on the world map, it's a separate instance.
Here, you'll do battle in a gauntlet format with various enemies while in Wolf form. I went in with three hearts, and they did quite a bit of damage. It's expected that you'll return here later in the game to complete the whole thing for a reward. Why? Because if you die on any floor, you'll have to restart the entire thing. And that's it. It's a room-by-room battle sequence as Wolf Link.]
Nintendo sent over the full bundle for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, including the Wolf Link amiibo. The good news? Unlike the Gold Mega Man figure, it has a proper package!
Beyond that it's a pretty basic bundle -- the game is sealed inside along with the figure, and that's it. The amiibo is one of my favorite releases yet, and the two-for-one feel is pretty great. As a reminder, it unlocks the Castle of Shadows, which seems to be a reskinned challenge dungeon of sorts. Oh, and it looks like Wiimote support isn't in for sure -- the game only offers a GamePad or Pro option at the start.
The cat was out of the bag already, but the free-to-play third-person MOBA, Smite, is officially on its way to the PS4 following an announcement on the PlayStation blog. While the game is already in a closed alpha, Hi-Rez studios plans to hold a closed beta in March that you can sign up for today if you dig togas, Minotaurs, and Valkyries.
Smite is one of those games that I'm always told has a huge player base, but never hear anyone talk about. Are its fans just very polite and keep to themselves? Does the volume of the bigger MOBAs like Dota and LoL just drown it out? Or maybe (likely), I'm just not checking in on the right places. Maybe I should sign up for the beta and see what all the fuss is about myself.
The highlight of this game for me was when a disco ball played a cheap sound-alike of Sandstorm. That should be all you need to know.
But, if those words don't paint a bleak enough picture for you, read on to find out all about the sad interbreeding of laser-cats, bacon, and mediocre shooter mechanics that make up Shooting Stars!
Ever had a Cham Night? That's when one of your friends declares "Cham Night!" and everyone goes to the liquor store and buys a bottle of Andre (approximate retail price: $4). Cham Night is always a good time but never a good decision.
Sam Lake partakes in his champagne consumption in a more spectacular fashion. To celebrate Quantum Break going gold, Remedy bought a big-ass bottle of champagne. Isn't it grand? I want it.
If I'm not mistaken, it looks to be a 15-liter bottle of Taittinger. According to this site, the asking rate is about $1,900. Maybe Remedy talked Daddy Warbucks Microsoft into footing the bill.
Still, this isn't the most ridiculous bottle of champagne I've seen. That honor goes to the Boston Bruins after the team won the 2011 Stanley Cup. As part of the blowout party, they bought a ridiculous $100,000 Midas champagne bottle that required a few helpers to drink out of. I bet that was a good night.
Another fighting game, another fightstick. This month Mad Catz is unleashing several sticks into the market, including a sub $100 option, and a few $200+ models.
Do you really need an expensive stick to play Street Fighter V? No, but a lot of you are going to buy it anyway.
A number of advancements are coming to the Xbox platform today, which, in 2016 terms, means both Windows 10 and the Xbox One. They're mostly social in nature, including the power to see other player's party listings, view a new Gamerscore leaderboard, arrange pins (yes!), hide games from the install list (yes again!), and an option to redeem codes quicker.
The avatar store is also getting a few improvements, and the Xbox Accessories app now better supports the Elite controller. All in all good changes, especially the ones above I was clearly excited for. It was annoying to see betas listed next to full games I already owned, and the new pin system has bugged me since the last big update.
Pokemon Rumble World, sans microtransactions, is coming to the US later this year. It already hit Europe in January, and just like that release, it will allow players to merely buy the game and play an unlimited amount of it. There are still Poke Diamonds and VIP Cards involved which seems odd, but in theory, it won't impact a whole lot. Both versions (free and retail) will not be compatible, but StreetPass functionality will work.
I actually thought it was a fun little brawler, but I wouldn't pay too much for it. In fact, I enjoyed the original without paying anything
Party Hard has its flaws, but the concept is pretty interesting. You're basically taking revenge on various annoying partiers, Jason style, and the game is procedurally generated. It will be out on PS4 and Xbox One in spring 2016, with the "After-Party" DLC.
The developer notes that Twitch features, like the power to alter the party by way of commands, will be intact. This sounds like a perfect PlayStation Plus game.
As far as runners go, Tron Run/r might have it all. In a genre that many scoff at for its general simplicity, this package is hardly stripped-down. In fact, there's no denying that it has significant heft. Before long, it's questionable as to whether that's more of a detriment than anything else.
"Bloat" is the word that kept coming to mind as I maneuvered my way through Tron Run/r's several courses. With regard to game mechanics, there's a subtle but important difference between depth and bloat. Every time a handful of systems would come together in a gratifying way, another scenario would arise with the paper-thin intention of variation for variation's sake. Back and forth it'd go, from being good to being too much.
Mythic Maniac isn't content with just a regular keyboard. Instead, he coded his Corsair K70 RGB to play Snake -- that classic game that everyone played on their calculators in math class. It's controlled by way of his keyboard, which then produces the actual snake and the objective by way of LEDs.
If you want you can grab the source code here, written in C# Net. Basically you load up the Corsair Utility program and run the executable, and you're good to go.
According to Nintendo, Pokken Tournament is now part of the Pokemon World Championship event. Starting this month on February 27, prospective players can head over to select GameStops (list below) to qualify. At that point they'll head to to the Nintendo World Store in New York on March 17, then the top two head to Ohio from July 1-3, at which point they may go to the World Championship.
It seems odd that the game isn't even out yet, so people who have visited Japan have a big advantage. Though if you win the GameStop round, a "pro" gamer will coach you before the New York round.
Bungie has announced that Iron Banner, a week long PVP event, will return again to Destiny. It kicks off on February 23 at 10AM PT, and will end at the usual reset time of March 1, 1:00AM PT.
This time the mode is Clash, and the rewards include snipers and rocket launchers, as well as new armor types, and PlayStation exclusive gear. The new matchmaking system that favors the quality of your connection over skill "might" be deployed during this time. Bungie notes that this may involve "fiercer competition," also known as blowouts because they haven't figured out a way to balance both parameters yet.
The 320 Crimson Days Ghost reward hasn't arrived yet, but it's supposed to come sometime before February 23, so there's a little time for that.
Several months ago, Capcom decided to remove R. Mika's cheeky butt slap from her animation repertoire in Street Fighter V. Equally cheeky fans have decided to add it back this week. As a mod only on PC, this reddit user (subreddit header NSFW) has re-created the move, which you can restore with the included instructions. Basically it just involves moving a few files around and you're good. Cammy's original introduction animation has also been restored.
It's still a bit weird that something this goofy was removed, especially with the design Laura has in general. Other animations, including the terrifying Necali, a warrior who consumes souls, are probably far more harmful for young, innocent eyes.
Fallout 4 has been nominated as 2015 Game of the Year at the 19th DICE Awards.
In all, Bethesda's post-apocalyptic shooter secured four awards, with Ori and the Blind Forest, Rocket League and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt also taking home four trophies.
"The 19th D.I.C.E. Awards winners truly embody the diverse set of games and platforms that have come to represent the changing face of our industry", said Martin Rae, president of Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. "This year the Academy membership responded to a variety of games covering smaller footprint to AAA blockbuster hits. Thank you to our distinguished guests and all the gamers watching to celebrate the many great games of 2015!"
Star Wars Battlefront, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Super Mario Maker, Mortal Kombat X and Fallout Shelter also received recognition.

It's a new Destructoid! The update was mostly set in motion to work better and faster on your mobile devices, but we also introduced a host of new features as well. Of course, with any new site there will be bugs, so please let us know if anything even remotely looks out of place, no matter how small.
My hope is that the site mostly still looks familiar (why reinvent the robot?), but if you dig deeper you'll find it works better than ever before.

Following up on their huge announcement earlier this month, Fedeen Games have released more information regarding the hotly anticipated expansion for Forsaken World Mobile. In addition to the Epic Dungeons and 3V3 Arena previously announced, Fedeen have included a ton of new Passive, Defensive Skills and Talents with which players can increasingly customize and power up their characters.
All five character classes will be able to access the new Talents and Skills from level 80. Talents determine how a player’s character will function within its class, and each Talent allows players to access a variety of Skills. By extending character development to level 80, Fedeen is ensuring plenty of options for players both veteran and new.
And where would a powerful character be without equally powerful equipment? Players with multiples of the same item can now forge them together to supercharge their gear. This new item improvement mechanic will grant players an increased amount of freedom in determining their own progression through Forsaken World Mobile.
Game of Dice is a monopoly-like dice game from Joycity for the Android and iOS. The game puts you in the shoes of players participating in the Genius League. A game where the stakes are high and victory seems to have sinister bonuses for the hapless champion.
As part of one of the many players (about 12 unlockable characters not including one-time special events) of the league, you will be participating in a 34-tile board battle against two opponents (for single player battles) or in 2v2 (for team battles) man battles. The board is setup like a squished lemniscate shaped Monopoly board with acquirable tiles based on the current events theming. The main tiles are composed of resorts while there are special tiles straight out of Monopoly like prison, income taxes, the bank/free parking, and of course the all-important Go space. Game of Dice brings in some originality though with shortcut 3 space lanes – the fortune and misery roads, offering unique boons/banes exactly as you'd imagine. Another minor nuance included is the gold/silver coin gamble square, where the player who landed on it secretly chooses a coin, and then gives/takes money from the others depending on if they guess right. Every time this square is landed on, the stakes get higher, resulting in some truly tense late game decisions.
Gameplay is simplistic to watch but when combined with the music, becomes addictive to experience.
Gameplay
The game focuses on your character's dice dealing capabilities. With the game feeling just like a shortened and streamlined version of Monopoly mixed with Yu-Gi-Oh (and no it's not Dungeon Dice!). The game's objective, just like in Monopoly, is to be the last player standing. To do that you'd need to control land tiles or steal them from others while outplaying and manipulating your foes into ruin. Unlike Monopoly where you can spend cash to upgrade houses/hotels on zones of control, Game of Dice plays it out a bit differently. To increase the power of your properties, you must either pass Go, use cards, or land on a tile you already own, and then throw more of your outer game funds into the betting pool. This last option can get a bit out of hand, with gamble addicts throwing multiple billions into the pot on a single game.
Aside from the main battle mode, the game doesn't offer much in terms of other game features. You will be circling around in actual dice making and character development. Socialization features include a global chat and a guild system offering the bare essentials.
Trick dice? Of course they're legal!
You and Your Dice
Game of Dice's character pool allows you to choose from a variety of players that have their own characteristics. Your main male character choice feels like GoD's version of Yugi from Yu-gi-oh! As he continues on screaming lines within the familiar range of Yugi's "I believe in the heart of the cards" bit. Other characters feel just like a carbon copy of pre-existing anime characters in any ongoing or recently concluded series. But unless you get your fun out of spamming their unique taunts in every match, the only part of each character that will matter to you is their stats. Stats get nuts as you advance up the ladder ranks, making you realize that beating a veteran player is going to take more than just dumb luck.
The characters you can unlock in GoD have their own set of stats that will prove integral on how you build your card deck up. Some of the characteristics include a decrease in payment for prison break, higher percentage output on vacation spots, or even a boost in yield from the gold/silver coin mini-game. You can then enhance their base stats as you level them up by paying up gold, a much more real currency than the stuff you wager during matches.
Your heart of the cards is legitimately quantifiable.
The other thing you'd have to consider is the creation of special dice that can bring specific boosts to your rolls. Some of the dice you can create can look really cool like the lava set, or it can be really tacky just like the PSY limited edition disco dice. Once you unlock a dice set, you can then improve their boost capabilities by collecting the fragments till you meet the quota. A truly powerful set of dice can give you a high chance of controlling your roll number within 2 standard deviations, helping guide you past game ending spaces with high certainty.
Decks Are a Thing
Aside from your character and dice sets. Game of Dice also features a skill card system that provides the necessary wrench to your opponent's well-oiled plans. These skill cards can help increase toll collection and affect your opponent's capabilities (like forcing him/her to use only one dice for a few turns or let's you travel to random or specific areas within the board).
High level players with planned out decks can be a real headache to handle.
These cards, just like your characters and dice fragments come in various rarities and strengths. The higher rarity cards provide bigger bonuses compared to their lower rarity ones and will be an integral factor in how you set your cards up as you go along.
You'll be given three starting cards as you hand. You need to then equip six more cards that the game will randomly give you at set turns within matches. This kind of setup allows a bit of randomness even though you are trying your best to eliminate that factor in every game. It's honestly rare a game reaches the full turn limit, so choosing to take a card in your backup deck of six means you might be eliminated or win before that card ever sees the light of day.
Snowballing
Game of Dice is truly an enjoyable game, an obvious step above the fun factor Monopoly originally brought to the board game world. However, there's one prevailing problem the game has: snowballing. Players can, if given the ideal situation, snowball from the start of the game and basically win it uncontested. This is the problem in a game where there's chance involved and a bit more manipulation in the deck building. Snowballing really discourages new players when they are placed against higher leveled or more financially invested ones, making your introduction to the game a steady series of brutal losses. This is partially mitigated by the Joy leagues, until you realize you can exchange your Joy for gold and items and keep your overpowered account in the lowbie leagues to continually torment their poor souls.
Game of Dice teaches the poor life lesson that the only way to win is to gamble more.
Another problem is when the opposite happens. No matter how well you play and plan, one or two bad rolls can ruin your entire empire towards the end of the game. I'm not saying it's impossible to win, it's just a rollercoaster rush from start to finish whether you have the lead or are against the ropes. I've personally had an experience where I was down to about 100M Joy in the game with my opponent owning around 1B Joy. One bad roll and I was able to rob him of his 1B and when the turn timer ended at 0 I was the winner.
While comebacks are real awesome to see and experience. You need a different kind of tenacity to keep on playing and not lose hope in this game. But heck, you're playing a game with dice involved so this shouldn't even be something worth mentioning for the more experienced players. If you can't stand the risk to gamble and lose, you're not in the right game to begin with.
Conclusion: Great (4/5)
Overall, my experience with Game of Dice is a truly engaging one. I got hooked the minute I won my first match, blinded by the concept of quadrupling my total account Joy funds in a single battle! Just like any gambler, I got cocky and pushed my luck to quickly lose it all to more experienced players. The game is fast, fun and it does bring back memories of me actually playing monopoly with my friends. As a mobile game it's a bit time intensive, and hard to gauge as matches can be over in a matter of minutes, or stretch out to 20+ in really engaging bouts. But if you're looking for a mobile game you can enjoy sitting on the coach with no interruptions at home, or just need to scratch your gambling itch without losing rela money, Game of Dice was made for you!
