DK Online Launches With New Castles And More

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 04:45 PM PST

DK Online Vista

The time has come for legions of new Dragon Knights to step up and save the world! Aeria Games, a leading global publisher of free-to-play online games, has announced the launch of DK Online, its newest massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Following the overwhelmingly positive response to several beta phases, DK Online is now available to all players, and all character progress will now be permanent and not subject to being wiped in the future.

Several new additions to the world of Litos have arrived with the launch in order to provide players with vastly more content to explore than previously seen during beta testing. Two completely new castles have been introduced to Castle Siege mode—DK Online's most popular player vs player (PvP) feature in which rival guilds battle for the ownership of these strongholds and the helpful perks that come along with them. In addition, a bevy of new boss creatures have been added throughout the world for intrepid knights to slay in search of glory and loot.

DK Online Fox Mount

The ceiling has also been raised for character progression. The brand-new zone of Emtlant has opened up a high-level area suitable for players at or near the new level cap of 42. As another means of outfitting their characters, players can now attain Battle Points for earned PvP kills during epic Realm vs. Realm battles.

"After a lot of hard work and incorporating the great feedback we received from players during beta testing, we're proud to release DK Online," said Tom Nichols, Director of Publishing at Aeria Games. "This game’s strong graphics, balanced classes, and unique PvP castle sieges are sure to be a big hit with Aeria’s player community."

Popular throughout the beta tests, GMs will once again host special events to engage players in-game. More information on these events is available on the game's forums. DK Online is free to download, and like all Aeria Games titles, is free-to-play.

Chrono Tales Announces Open Beta Date, Discusses Treasure Plant Event

Ray Media has announced that open beta for Chrono Tales will begin on January 29.

One of the most popular events in Chrono Tales is Treasure Plant. As ancient legend goes, there was a nearly dry, narrow oasis located in the center of a mysterious desert, where many ancient treasures were buried. Adventurers have finally found the gate to the treasure, and now the battle ensues for the right to the riches.

Treasure Plant is a daily in-game activity. Portals appear for 30 minutes near the rebirth point in Chroland Capital, transporting players to the oasis. Players can click on the Gold Crystal to occupy the plant, and will gain control if no other guilds occupy it within the next six minutes. With success, players can collect from the Gold Cluster that spawns from the ground. After the portal closes, the owning guild can return to continue to harvest from the Gold Cluster until the next event.

Chrono Tales is currently between closed beta and open beta, but is hosting a new event in its forums, giving players a chance to win a Hibussac mount.

Along with the DLC set to release January 29th, SOE and DC Universe Online released this brand new trailer showcasing Home Turf!

MMOHut Editorial - Mr. Andersen Talks DCUO DLC6 – Home Turf

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-Chief

Mr.+Andersen1

Mr. Andersen as in Jens Andersen, the Creative Director for DC Universe Online showcasing DLC 6 – Home Turf

Editor’s Note: Some screenshots are taken from the private test server and are subject to change at launch.

Today SOE revealed to a limited number of press a preview of DC Universe Online’s often teased but yet to be fully revealed DLC 6 featuring the Home Turf Lair update (a $9.99 purchase). Well now we have a much more fleshed out picture of what it will look like at launch. I’m here for you masses yearning to know first just what to expect from this new update but first it’s a lot easier to understand the overarching concepts after watching the trailer above revealing how the mainframe works.

(See above trailer)

As you can see your mainframe is your primary control panel for all things Lair from inviting players/Leagues to your secret base. This is a huge part of the fun factor of the lair as not only can you invite players over to fight in your lair (resulting in a bad ass sequence in which a lair specific cinematic to transition at the end of each round and push the battling players to a new part of the base), but you can also invite over your girlfriend that far exceeds your fashion sense to decorate your lair for you. Fish Tanks and paintings of ponies included assuming she can find them. Though a nifty feature that must be pointed out is that the UI smartly recognizes which location of the lair you have highlighted and will only show you items that can be placed there to save you time from scrolling through incompatible items to find one that fits. And with over 400 items to find at launch and more on the way, homebodies will be sure to spend hours getting their lair situated just right!

All of these abilities are reliant on your generators so you’ll need to keep your generators filled up to keep your powers intact. You can also upgrade each of them to specialize your lair’s powers to meet your personal preferences.

Which brings me to the next point. While the DLC may be a purchased item (no worries Legendary players, it’s still free for you), the actually items you fill your lair with are all found by doing content within the game. Starting at level 12 you’ll be able to access your lair and start randomly finding pieces of furniture and other items with utility just from playing the game. These items are fully tradeable to create a new element to the player driven economy. The only downside I have to say on the whole thing is that Sony Player Studios likely won’t be making an appearance with DCUO Lairs for a long time if ever due to complications with the PS3 version contract. Really unfortunate really when the possibilities could be so endless. But at least SPS is on its way to Vanguard and Planetside 2 soon we can’t cry too hard about it. Oh and as a side-note for those unfamiliar with DCUO, free players won’t be fully left out as they can still collect and decorate non-functional pieces of decoration in their smaller version of the lair, the hide-out.

So what else is special? For one you won’t have to worry about the front door of your lair looking like a revolving door at the Justice League. When you acquire the deed to purchase a lair you have to select the location in Arkham or Metropolis. These aren’t instanced but in fact real locations in the game overworld and will be marked by large green columns of light. As a nice feature you can teleport to any of the Lairs (yes you can own multiple lairs!) you own in an instant. Just like the real world though, this purchase is all about location location location. If you choose to live in the inner-city close to the scumbag villains or do-good heroes with similar empty pockets, you’re going to get your digs for cheap! If you want to upscale things to say Champion’s Way, you’re going to have to dig deeper and dish out some serious doe. And if you really have to impressive your homies with an iconic location like Arkham Asylum, expect to pay some cash shop currency in addition to a hefty sum of in-game currency. But that’s worth it to get featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Villainous isn’t it you superstar?

chrome 2013 01 23 13 14 00 77 620x348

Of course those seeking a more dreary base such as the sewers won’t have to wait much longer as Andersen promised manhole entrances were in development and would be out in the near future. Also don’t fret if you win the lotto and seek to upgrade your Lair to a more prominent position in the city as Lair relocation exists allowing you to keep the majority of your decorations intact as you move! You can even move decorations between lairs without having to physically go between them. How is that for convenience?

RelocateBase

Once your city and location is chosen, you then can choose your overarching theme. At launch you can choose from a Deco Theme and Gothic Theme as well as the basic Dive Theme from the hide-out. There are also 4 themes that will be available for purchase at launch including my personal favorite, the Ancient Theme, ideal for people like V that enjoy building a museum out of their Lair. Next you can adjust the permanent fixture locations in your lair. Think of these are Wall Studs when hanging something heavy in your house. Pink fixtures allow you to play functional items like auction houses, soda machines, alchemy tables, brokers, sparring dummies, and such. The rest of the fixture points are for your furniture, though I was sad to discover that they have forcefully placed the positions in lairs to prevent my plans of building a fortress out of extinct mammal statues. Back to the drawing board…

Tiger placement 620x348

I see your pitiful pillow fortress and raise you a mammoth and sabretooth!

Finally the Mainframe functions with power generators to enable the true features of the Lair including your orbital strike, supply drops, accomplices/sidekick and henchmen, and research modifications.

Orbital Strike offers a fire filled AoE explosion you can call in from space during battle to change the tides in your favor.

Supply Drops can offer temporary on the fly power buffs or heals to give you that edge you need to hold out.

Accomplices and Sidekicks offer your own decently powered helper to make you feel like you have a true protege. While henchmen are slightly weaker, they make up for it in numbers and coordination. They are also themed after whichever lair you use for added effect! This was the part that had me most excited as it’s one of the closest features I’ve seen to the now cancelled game, Langrisser Schwarz.

Research modifications can be inserted into your weapons and gear to offer powerful bonuses.

HenchmenSideKick

All of these abilities are reliant on your generators so you’ll need to keep your generators filled up to keep your powers intact.

Now while lairs are a huge part of DLC 6, they aren’t the only thing being packaged. Villains will gain access to the new locations  Arkham Asylum and Steelworks while Heroes will get to visit Ace Chemicals and Striker’s Island. Each location features 5 daily quests that, when completed, open up a conclusion style solo instance where your skills will be tested against iconic bosses in epic battles. Appropriately themed outfits will also be added to the game so be sure to check these places out if you want to upgrade your stagnant wardrobe!

HomeTurf

All this will be available to players starting next Tuesday, the 29th, with the exception of PS3 EU players who will have to wait until the 30th.

Mechanist Games has announced that it will join forces with Reality Squared Games (R2 Games) to publish the English version of City of Steam.

R2 Games publishes Crystal Saga, Wartune, and Broken Realm, and plan to bring City of Steam to a wide international audience. City of Steam will be R2 Games’ first Unity 3D game.

“It’s going be a challenge, sure, but I see a lot of potential in City of Steam,” says Jared Psigoda, CEO of Reality Squared Games. “Mechanist Games’ approach to making a game is something we’re thrilled to be a part of. We want to make sure City of Steam gets the recognition it deserves for being the innovative game that it is.”

Having garnered a growing following of hardcore fans throughout the Alpha and Closed Beta tests in 2012, City of Steam has been making waves in both browser gaming and MMO communities. It offers a full MMO experience without the need for lengthy client installs. Loading times are short, and the game runs smoothly on even modest hardware, making it highly accessible to most online gamers. Players explore the ancient city of Nexus, a once great civilization where mechanical steamworks and magic are ever-present. The story initially unfolds from a personal perspective, where players must find a new home for themselves and their families. Quests unravel the boundless mysteries of not only Nexus, but the player’s own shrouded past.

“City of Steam is a game founded on community values, market-facing ears, player ideas and input. This is where our development focus needs to be, especially as the momentum snowballs toward release,” adds David Lindsay, CEO and Creative Lead of Mechanist Games.”A partnership with R2Games gives us that extra boost needed to make City of Steam’s great release, an amazing one. We share a vision that this game can be the very best browser-based MMO out there.”

The firm also wants you to know that you can pre-order the expansion and receive several in-game rewards. These include a "Scourge of the Hutts" title, a Dr. Oggurobb Hutt holostatue, and a creepy crawly Makrin Seedling minipet.

MMO Family: Why Catfish is a term your kids should know

MMO Family Why Catfish is a term your kids should know
By now, everyone's probably heard the strange story of Manti Te'o, the football player who had an online relationship with someone who wasn't really that person. The question that people keep asking is whether or not he was in on the hoax, but I think that's irrelevant. The real question is why people are surprised to begin with.

Ironically, gamers probably have a leg up on the Catfish scenario, since there are plenty of examples of players misrepresenting themselves through their in-game avatars. And there's often a grey area when it comes to roleplaying and honesty. In this week's MMO Family, let's look at the lessons of gaming, identity, and social media and what children should learn about all three. (And I promise I won't mention Manti again in this column.)

Blizzard 'actively working' on All-Stars MOBA

Blizzard AllStars MOBA reappears on radar
Last spring there was a brouhaha over the name DotA that was ultimately settled with Valve keeping the four-letter moniker and Blizzard changing its upcoming MOBA to Blizzard All-Stars. But after that, the newly rechristened game seemingly fell off the radar. Even the official website only offers the tease "coming soonish." Despite the lack of information, however, the game is still being developed.

A recent statement by StarCraft II's production director Chris Sigaty notes that the studio hasn't forgotten about Blizzard All-Stars, but is focusing on its free-to-play business model. "We're actively working on it," Sigaty said. "That I can confirm. A lot of the stuff that's remaining right now that we need to focus on are the systems necessary to pull off a game with a different business model than StarCraft II."

Reminiscing about Warhammer Online with Mark Jacobs
When it comes to the 2008 phenomenon of Warhammer Online and the story of its rise and fall, there's one obvious source for the full dish: Mark Jacobs. The former big kahuna of Mythic Entertainment is now CEO of City State Entertainment, and while Jacobs is no longer in the WAR business, he's still passionate about making games and talking about his past experiences.

We sat down with Jacobs to look at WAR and what he thought went right and wrong with the title. Even today, many gamers are passionately divided on the game's build-up to release and design decisions. Some lay the blame at Jacobs' doorstep, while others admire the passion and vision of this MMO creator. So what does Jacobs have to say when put to the question about WAR's outcome? Find out in this exclusive interview!

Enter at Your Own Rift: Dungeon review, part 1

Enter at Your Own Rift Dungeon review, part 1
I don't hide the fact that as an MMO gamer, I probably fall into the "casual" category by many of your definitions. Even so, I probably go dungeon diving in RIFT more than in other MMOs because of the game's silky-smooth LFG interface and the generally quick pace of the instance runs themselves. Hitting a dungeon while you've got one or more counters on the reward page is added incentive because you're at least guaranteed a solid loot drop of your very own (or plaques).

I'm still getting a feel for Storm Legion dungeons, but when it comes to the core game, I've run those instances more times than I can count. I figured I might as well share my thoughts on the first four dungeons you're likely to run in the early and mid-game to see if they pass muster. While I'm at it, I might tell a related story or two from my runs. Gather 'round, children, as Papa Olivetti smokes a stogie and tells you a tale you're unlikely to forget.

The Daily Grind: What's your favorite long-cooldown skill?

The Daily Grind What's your favorite longcooldown skill
In Guild Wars 2, one of my favorite skills to use is the ability to unleash a cranky mechanical golem upon my foes. It only lasts for 40 seconds and has (I think) an 180-second cooldown, which means I don't get to use it as often as I'd like. However, it always makes me absurdly happy to pull it out, and I wonder if the long cooldown is one of the reasons I appreciate it so much.

It's pretty common for developers to balance powerful skills with a lengthy cooldown, leaving the choice up to the player as to when and where it's best to unleash hell. It's not uncommon to be in a dungeon run and have the leader instruct players to pop their cooldowns on difficult fights; sometimes that long-cooldown skill is what makes the difference between victory and defeat.

So what's your favorite long-cooldown skill? When do you tend to use it?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

If you're looking forward to Path of Exile's open beta (possibly in the wake of our own first impressions), you don't have much longer to wait. The testing will start shortly, giving everyone a chance to get in on all of the clicking and looting. For everyone looking forward to the next step, old hands and new players alike, the development team has provided a handy walkthrough of what will take place as the game's gates creak open.

All characters will be returned to level 1 and all items will be removed outside of special promotions, but this will be the last character reset the game will undergo. Players with existing closed beta clients will be able to download the open beta patch directly, but the game's servers will go down for about two hours before the changeover happens. The post also warns everyone to expect that there may be login queues or latency issues given the game's popularity, so consider yourself fairly warned.

            Scott Hartsman leaving Trion Worlds
According to a recent post on the RIFT forum, Executive Producer Scott Hartsman has announced his resignation from Trion Worlds.

"It's been an amazing time," Hartsman writes, "Working with some of the best developers anywhere, getting the company's first game off the ground, taking it all the way through a multitude of amazing updates, then to Storm Legion, and even a little bit beyond."

Lead Game Designer Bill "Daglar" Fisher will be continuing with the State of the Game update starting tomorrow, but no word yet if he'll be taking over the Executive Producer role.

Jukebox Heroes: Eleven MMO soundtracks you can get for free

Jukebox Heroes Eleven MMO soundtracks you can get for free
Collecting MMO soundtracks is a scattered, scavenger-like experience. Releasing video game soundtracks isn't exactly high up on studio and publisher to-do lists (although we're seeing more love from digital stores), so whether or not a title will get a music release is really a crapshoot. What does get released is never in the same place twice: Some game soundtracks are released as special editions only, some only as CDs, some as full MP3 album releases, some directly from the composer, some are buried on websites, and so on.

So I'm constantly looking everywhere trying to beef up my MMO soundtrack library, and as a result I've uncovered several scores that the studios are giving away for free. I'm all over free (legal) music, especially when it's in my area of interest!

If you've been looking to start an MMO soundtrack collection or are looking to add to what you have, I've put together a list of 11 MMO scores that you can get today free of charge. Sound good? It does to me!

The Soapbox: Can we reward fun over persistence?

Well, some of us are already having fun.
MMOs are games of repetition. Advancing past a certain point is always a matter of doing the same thing over and over, whether it's repeating raids in World of Warcraft, playing the market in EVE Online, or taking part in the same event to clear daily achievements in Guild Wars 2. Whether or not you enjoy these repeat performances can make the difference between the grind from hell and a pleasant upward climb, but it's still a game of repetition.

It's not exactly the ideal state of being. Nearly every new game seems to recognize this and advertise itself as free from grinding, which at best is true in a very narrow sense. You won't be grinding daily quests, but you'll be grinding events or PvP maps or dungeons. So why don't we have a game out there that rewards fun instead of persistence? Is it possible to create a game that's free of repetition and focused on enjoyable experiences?

Eliot has gone rogue on us and hijacked the Massively-II, our super-advanced spaceship. But we will not surrender, no. He tasks us. He tasks us, and we shall have him! We'll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before we give him up! Because he totally has our Rush mix tape and we need that for next month's road trip.

Flameseeker Chronicles Glitching in Guild Wars 2
Last week was crazily newsy in the world of Guild Wars 2. One might even call it newsilicious. Between a look at the next handful of months, an announcement about guesting and paid world transfers, and a developer livestream about rewards, WvW, and other stuff, last week was just ridiculously full of information.

We'll be seeing the first bits of all that prophecy come into being on the 28th, when January's patch officially hits, bringing with it, among other things, guesting. The guesting announcement was fairly ill-received, due almost entirely to the news that it wouldn't work between North American and European servers. Up 'til now, you could always talk to folks from the other data center, but you couldn't actually play with them without transferring. Now you still can't play with them without transferring (and you can still talk to them), and people were really hoping we'd be able to do the whole guesting across regions thing. I'm hopeful that it will come in at some point, but I still can't see guesting as a net loss in any way.

There's a lot of digesting to do with all that news, though, so let's start things off by not talking about any of it.

The monocle makes it clear that while this man is shooting up bugs, he is doing so with the stiffest of upper lips.
Are you ready to strap on some armor, load up a gun, and go shoot things like they've never been shot before? The staff behind Firefall certainly hopes so because the game is opening its gates on Friday, January 25th, for the first of three upcoming beta weekend events. Everyone can log in and play for free starting at 1 p.m. EST, but the developers have also decided to sweeten the pot slightly by adding a contest to the weekend festivities.

The Skillshot Contest will be running during the open event and is available to all participants in the beta, even normal closed testers. Take a video or screenshot of your best moments for a chance to win prize packs including new Razer mice and Firefall gear. In addition, all participants will receive a special decal in-game to place on their battleframes. If you still need a little more convincing, you can check out a new trailer for the weekend just past the break.

The Secret World working on account-wide shop unlocks and a veteran system

Rocket launchers can also be seen as unlocking systems, in that they unlock your body from other parts of itself.
Cash shops can be the bane of an altoholic, but The Secret World is aiming to ensure that your alts get all of the benefits your main already enjoys. Starting today, pets you unlock via the store will be unlocked for your account rather than one character, with the development team planning to move this functionality to outfits as well. That means that if you buy some cosmetic frippery once, it's yours forever on all your characters.

The game is also going to be putting together a veteran rewards program for subscribers. Each month of subscription provides Veteran Points, awarded at the same time that the subscription awards bonus cash shop points. Veterans can then spend the points on a variety of items, including new consumables, outfits, pets, and training dummies. It's always nice to have some extra benefits to being a long-term fan of a game, so if you're already enjoying deciphering conspiracy, there's extra incentive to keep at it.

Final Fantasy XIV shows off early Shiva renders

Not using an ice-related pun used a lot of willpower.
The Primals of Final Fantasy XIV are kind of a big deal. In the original game, players had a chance to fight two of them, both of whom made for a rough fight, but the relaunch will include wandering versions of these pseudo-deities for players to hunt down and harness. And while astute fans have known for some time that Shiva will be among the Primals in the new version, she's finally strutting her stuff in the latest development blog post.

The post contains several early renders of the completed model as well as the ice queen's concept art, all of which should look familiar to veterans of the Final Fantasy series. While Shiva is known to have worshippers much like her fellow Primals Ifrit and Garuda, it's not yet clear if her appearance means a new beastman tribe will be entering the already crowded Eorzea. The full set of pictures won't answer that question, but it will give players eagerly awaiting the beta something new to gawk at.

                      Hyperspace Beacon Givin' SWTOR props
All MMOs could use improvements, but that doesn't negate what they have done right. And despite the negativity, SWTOR is doing well. In fact, in a recent forum post Systems Designer Damion Schubert said that the free-to-play push was working quite well: "The success of the market (and it has been quite successful) has given us the time and resources to do some ambitious things on Makeb and plan some very ambitious things beyond." Without even looking at the specific numbers, I can tell that the Cartel Market cash shop is working really well because of the sheer number of items I see on the Galactic Trade Network (auction house). As much as I hate to admit it, if the Cartel Market does well, so does the rest of the game.

I also see other hints that BioWare might be changing up its game a little bit. Direct discussion with the community appears to be on the rise, and BioWare has also admitted and is attempting to properly fix its mistakes. In the wake of Stephen Reid's departure, direct communication had become lax, and besides Ilum, I don't remember BioWare ever truly admitting to mistakes.

Let's take a look at a few of the changes BioWare has already made this year. Maybe it will give us a clue as to where SWTOR is going in the near future.

If you're still wondering about this "transmedia synergy" thing that's supposedly going on between Defiance the MMO shooter and Defiance the television show, you might want to check out a new interview with Trion SVP Nick Beliaeff.

Events taking place in the two properties are "synchronized within an inch of their life," Beliaeff says. "That's the whole goal. That's some of the secret sauce that we think we have, just making sure that whenever an episode of the show is on air there's a big beat happening in the game. Our real goal is whether it's from game to show or show to game, that those big beats are happening whenever there's an episode on."

As you might imagine, this is incredibly difficult, and it's one reason that Trion and Syfy have been working on the IP for five years now. In terms of specific crossover, Beliaeff cites an example where a doctor in the TV show discovers a nanite contagion. She reaches out to one of her NPC colleagues in the game, who in turn provides players with a series of missions that they'll need to complete before the next episode of the show.
