Star Trek Online Reveals Plans for Next Two Seasons, Mid-year Event

Executive Producer Dan Stahl is hardly shy in tackling the myriad Ask Cryptic questions, and today's Star Trek Online queries proved to be no different for him. While there was a hodge-podge of questions from players, it seemed as though the focus for many was on the future of the game and Season 8 in specific.

Sup Holmes gets devious with Frog Fractions' Jim Crawford

[Destructoid's Director of Communications Hamza Aziz asked Jonathan Holmes to make a show called 'Sup, Holmes?' so that Destructoid could later sell a t-shirt that says 'Sup, Holmes?' on it. This is that show. Subscribe to the podcast feed and find more episodes here.]

This week on Sup Holmes we welcome Twinbeard Studio's Jim Crawford, creator of Futilitris, Frog Fractions, Hot Dachshund, and many more. Like Tomorrow Corporation's Little Inferno and Ian Bogost's Cow Clicker, Jim's videogames are often about videogames, which some would say make them "post modern." Others just think they are fun and hilarious. It could go either way. You'd have to play them yourself to find out where you stand on this important issue.

We'll be talking to Jim about where he's been, where he's going, if he'll start selling games someday or stick with the free model, if he's played Homestuck, and much more. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST to watch the action EXPLODE.

Press Paws - Saving Animals with Art and Video Games from Secret Powers on Vimeo.

A few weeks ago on Sup Holmes, guest Mariel Cartwright (Skullgirls) teased her involvement with Press Paws- a videogame-themed gallery show to benefit What's Up Dog LA. Featured artists include Paul Roberstson, Jim Mahfood, Jeff Delgado, Bobby O'herlihyLacey Micallef (designer of these Parappa and Totokeke buttons) various artists from Girls Drawin' Girls, and many more. The show was co-sponsored by Nicalis, publisher of Cave Story and VVVVVV on the eShop. If you like videogames, dogs, or videogame dogs, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

The show opens on February 9th at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA. I'm going to do my best to make it. Barring that, I'm definitely buying one of those buttons. Parappa with teeth is the best.

So, like, this is nothing new. We briefly brought up Japan World Cup, a weird-ass horse race-betting DVD game, a couple years back. You might not have heard of it. Or, if you are like me, you completely forgot that this is a thing that exists.

Consider this a refresher course in "Japan is f*ckin' nuts" 101.

Wings Over Atreia: PvP tourney produces victory for winner and Aion

Wings Over Atreia PvP tourney produces victory for winner and Aion
Well, speak of the devil! No sooner did I get done exploring the topic of whether or not PvP is player-generated content than I stumbled upon some players generating content based on PvP in Aion. And by "stumbled upon," I mean "noticed on the launcher while loading up for some winged fun." The group Epidemic Gaming was set to host a PvP tournament on the Tiamat server. As an obvious fan of PGC, I immediately made plans to attend.

I'll be the first to admit I am not by any means a master of PvP (so you can quit your laughing over there before your sides split), but both the announcement and the message itself brought a smile to my face and more hope to my heart. Heck, I may even have more spring in my step! Why? I'll tell you why! Join me as we check out this battle royal where the Daevas of Tiamat duke it out until there's only one standing as well as what an event such as this means for Aion.

One Shots To those left behind
Good games may get cancelled, but as long as we have screenshots, they're never truly forgotten! Reader John sent us in this blast from the not-too-distant past that some of you may recognize.

"While going through some old screenshots, I came across a few from Tabula Rasa," John shared. "It was taken in November of 2007 as Veracious Pearl was ready to do some fighting."

Sadly, that soldier never made it out of the war. That doesn't mean we've given up fighting, however! Knock down a few mobs in the name of Veracious Pearl today, and when you're done, you should check out the rest of today's One Shots troops.

The Daily Grind: What was the best MMO expansion of all time?

The Daily Grind What was the best MMO expansion of all time
Whether or not the expansion model is here to stay or on the way out in the industry is a topic for another time. Instead, I want to talk about the best expansion of all time. AOL's Neverwinter Nights supposedly had an expansion in 1992, but the modern age of expansions didn't get going until 1998's Ultima Online: The Second Age. Since then we've seen scores of add-ons to our favorite MMOs. In 2012, we had nine major expansions enter the field (and we're not even counting content updates).

A great expansion significantly improves upon the game that came before. Perhaps it adds a wealth of new content, is just superbly done, or introduces a beloved feature to the game. For you, it could be the expansion in which you fell in love with a certain MMO.

Don't hold back here; if there ever was a time to step up and be bold, now is it. Let's fight it out in the comments over the best expansion that was, is, and ever will be!

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Mog Log: (Over)analyzing the Final Fantasy XIV trailer

The Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
Sadly, January 7th did not see the release of the new Final Fantasy XIV benchmark. It did, however, see the release of both the beta tester application and the full trailer for the new version, both of which are relevant to the interests of any Final Fantasy XIV fan. The trailer is likely of greater interest, seeing as how most current fans are likely already flagged as Legacy players and thus don't need to apply for testing, but the point is that both are out there.

Of course, the new opening movie is the only piece of information we've had about the game for a little while, but it seems worth analyzing and examining even on its own merits. No, I'm not talking about speculating as to whether or not the guy on the horse who looks exactly like Odin is in fact Odin or not (spoiler, doy). I want to talk about what this means for the lore, what the overall effect is, and whether or not this monster of a trailer succeeds at what it's meant to do.

The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II

The Tattered Notebook Why I came back to EverQuest II
When I log into EverQuest II after a long absence, I feel a little bit like a world-weary vagabond who's finally earned a rest. I see myself -- or my avatar, at least -- dropping his luggage on a familiar front porch and surveying the surroundings he vividly remembers despite months (sometimes years) of travel abroad.

There's a fine coating of dust on the furniture. The neighborhood has a bunch of new rules and as many new neighbors. All in all, though, the spires of Freeport and its refurbished waterfront are a welcome sight. EQII has always been the one MMO that I return to without fail; it's also the one that I've played the most, now that Star Wars Galaxies is gone.

This time around, I'm coming back not for an expansion or a new feature (although there are plenty of both in the world's deepest themepark) but rather for the need for a little MMO stability. And hey, I'd be lying if I said I'm not partly motivated by the promise of EQNext.

Continue reading The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II

ArcheAge lists Korean pre-order options for next week's launch

ArcheAge lists Korean preorder options for next week's launch
Things are moving fast for ArcheAge in Korea as the title barrels down the final stretch to launch. The title is currently wrapping up open beta testing in the region and recently revealed that it will be releasing on January 15th there with a subscription model. Now we have a glimpse as to what XLGAMES is preparing in terms of pre-order options thanks to the official Korean website.

While the translation is never perfect, it looks as if the various pre-order packages include game time (including bonus days), commemorative coins, items, buffs, and even a "sky boat." There's a limited amount of time to take the studio up on this offer, so if you're in the region and interested, definitely give it a look sooner rather than later.

[Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]
