Public-relations woes may be catching up with Uber

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:36 AM PDT

UBER has had a tough year. It has fired staff on the back of sexual-harassment allegations and faced reports of a hostile workplace culture. It has been sued for allegedly stealing self-driving-car technology.  It lost customers when it flouted a New York taxi boycott in protest of President Donald Trump's travel ban. And, amid all the turmoil, its boss resigned. But despite all this, the company continued to win more and more customers, including business travellers.

Now, however, there are signs that the tide may be turning. Certify, an expense-management software company, has released its latest quarterly report on business-travel spending in America. And for the first time since it started collecting data in 2013, Uber has seen a decline in use among business travellers.

Uber and other ride-hailing apps still dominate the business-travel market for ground transport, accounting for around two-thirds of it. And they are growing at the expense of traditional services. The market share of taxis and rental cars…Continue reading

Here’s how govt plans to put laggard India on the internet expressway

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:25 AM PDT

The days of grappling with slow internet connections on mobile and broadband networks in India could soon be over. The government has kick-started the process of giving a boost to the minimum mandated internet speed from existing 512 kbps to at least 2 mbps. This is a significant step that could boost India’s tardy internet. According to the 2017 Q1 State of the Internet report by Akamai Technologies, the average internet speed in India is 6.5 mbps, which puts the country in 89th position among the countries analysed. With the highest average internet speed being in South Korea at 26.1 mbps, India has a long way to go to reach anywhere near the top. But Akamai research reveals that the process has begun in India, with the average speed showing an 87 per cent year-on-year increase, which is the highest in the world. This sudden spurt can be attributed to the emergence of Reliance Jio. IPv6 speeds have consistently proven to be higher than the speeds provided by IPv4. India has made it to the the top ten countries providing IPv6 services, with 17 per cent of internet requests in India coming through IPv6, a 20 per cent year-on-year increase. That’s because Jio’s internet services largely use the IPv6, with 79 per cent of India’s IPv6 requests coming through a Jio connection. So, it would not be an exaggeration to say that in addition to providing internet connectivity to a larger audience, Jio has been successful in providing a larger audience with better internet connectivity than India has ever seen. But the scale of India’s work ahead is magnified by the fact that countries like Sri Lanka, Kenya and South Africa have had consistently higher internet speeds than India. Kenya had a 67 per cent year-on-year increase in the average internet speed in the country. The global average internet speed is 7.2 mbps, which is higher than India’s at the moment. Also, the average peak connection speed in India is 41.4 mbps, which is lower than the global average of 44.2 mbps. Singapore and Macau lead the way in terms of peak internet speeds, with speeds of 184.5 mbps and 132 mbps, respectivelty. It is known that congestion in networks does lead to lowering of internet speeds, and that is India’s biggest challenge. The scale of India’s potential internet base is far larger than tiny nations like Singapore and Macau. Providing their quality of internet speeds to majority of the population will be a daunting task. At present, only 19 per cent of the Indian population can boast of internet speeds greater than 10 mbps. Perhaps the more telling statistic is this: of all Indians with access to the internet, less than half (42 per cent) have access to speeds of over 4 mbps. But by increasing the minimum mandated internet speed, the government has taken a significant step towards making the internet more accessible to Indians. Until India’s internet speeds reach the global level, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Digital India’ dream is likely to remain just that — a dream.

Malayalam director I V Sasi passes away

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:08 AM PDT

Acclaimed Malayalam film director I V Sasi, whose work defined popular cinema for decades, died in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 69.

A prolific filmmaker who peaked in the 1970s and 1980s with films across genres, Sasi was arguably the only director of his time who enjoyed a box-office stature on a par with or greater than stars who appeared in his films.

Sasi directed about 150 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and was reported to be in talks for a return, with a big film based on the Gulf War.

Sasi started out as an art director in the late 1960s and directed his debut feature, Utsavam, in 1975.

He worked repeatedly, and successfully, with second-rung stars before making the big league with Avalude Ravukal (1978), a super-hit, also noted for its bold theme.

In the 1980s, he delivered a series of multi-starrer blockbusters, most of them featuring Mohanlal and Mammootty.

In 1981, Sasi picked Mammootty for Trishna, a film which marked the actor’s transition to leading roles.

A state-award winner, his prominent films include Ithaa Ivide Vare (1977), Angaadi (1980), Ee Naadu (1982), Aalkoottathil Thaniye (1984), Vaartha (1986), Aavanazhi (1986), Mrigaya (1989) and Devasuram (1993).

Aaroodham (1982) won the national award for the best feature film for national integration. His last film was Vellathooval, released in 2009.

Sasi worked with writers on diverse themes and had a prolific collaboration with writers, including the Jnanpith Award winner M T Vasudevan Nair. It was with the late T Damodaran that he formed a template for angry, and at times anti-establishment, political films.

He brought Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together for the Malayalam-Tamil bilingual Alavudeenum Athbhuthavilakkum (1979).

Later, he directed them in separate films in 1980, Kaali and Guru, respectively. His Hindi films include Anokha Rishta (1986) with Rajesh Khanna.

Sasi is survived by his wife Seema, a popular actress who featured in many of his films, and a son and daughter.

CBSE schools may move court over order on Kannada teaching

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:08 AM PDT

The Managements of Independent CBSE Schools Association is planning to move the court over the order of the government that all schools in the state should teach Kannada as either a first or a second language.

The managements have said they have no problem teaching Kannada as one of the languages. But schools will find it difficult if it is made mandatory as a first or a second language.

M Srinivasan, president of the Association, said it would not be possible to make teaching of Kannada as first or second language mandatory. “We will first write to the government and hold discussions with them. We will approach the court, if we dont get a remedy,” he told DH.

Board exams are conducted for classes 9 and 10. It will not be possible to conduct the board exams if Kannada is taught as a first or second language. Srinivasan said the Association would write to the secondary education board in this regard.

Dairies take to tech to for supervising productivity

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:01 AM PDT

HYDERABAD: Private and cooperative sector dairies in India are increasingly adopting the latest tagging and tracking technologies to supervise the productivity of individual milking animals and dairy farmers to monitor milk supplies and take corrective steps quickly to suit market demands. Through the latest technologies of tagging with smart chips of unique identity, these dairies are constantly registering the productivity and health records of individual animals. This helps them predict productivity fluctuations using data analytics and initiate corrective measures wherever intervention is needed, either directly or by advising the dairy farmers. While Amul and Chitale Dairy are among the early adopters of taggingRFID (radio frequency identification) technologies -they have been using these for nearly a decade -Hatsun Agro and Dodla Dairy are among newer ones that have adopted these steps. Chitale Dairy had partnered with VMware Technology for tagging and automation of processes in what it calls a `Cows to Cloud’ initiative. The company claims the technology helped it increase per capita production several folds. Amul has been using RFID tags on cattle in its Gujarat farms. India, the world’s largest producer of milk, has the highest cattle population globally with a share of 30.39%, according to the US Department of Agriculture. With more animals coming under the organised dairy industry , it becomes imperative to know about their productivity , said industry leaders.

Crackdown on shell companies unearths $1 billion cash

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:00 AM PDT

India is intensifying its crackdown on dubious companies after it unearthed over $1 billion in suspicious cash deposits as part of its investigations into corruption and efforts to boost foreign investment, a minister said. While the government has already deregistered over 200,000 companies and restricted their bank accounts, it is now working on limiting property transfers to trace any further generation of black money, said P.P. Chaudhary, junior minister for corporate affairs, in an interview on Oct. 18 in New Delhi. The ministry is probing deposits of over $1 billion made by around 20,000 companies during the cash ban last year, while its Serious Fraud Investigation Office is investigating 1,505 companies for allegedly violating the Companies Act. It is examining another 809 listed companies, found untraceable by SEBI, to check their status, existence of their offices and directors, the minister said. “Our purpose is to increase compliance so that investors’ confidence increases in Indian companies,” Chaudhary said. “This will also attract foreign investors who would be sure that the companies they are investing in are genuine. We will have to curb shell companies if we want to increase confidence of investors in India.” Anti-Corruption Platform After winning the 2014 election in a landslide on the promise of tackling corruption and improving the ease of doing business, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been taking measures to prevent money laundering, counterfeiting, hoarding and tax evasion. In November last year, he withdrew 86 percent of currency on circulation aiming to crackdown on unaccounted wealth and put an end to India’s vast shadow economy. In an Independence Day speech on Aug. 15, Modi claimed the move had unearthed over 300,000 shell companies. Following his speech, the ministry of corporate affairs struck off the names of 217,239 companies for failing to comply with regulatory requirements and disqualified directors on these companies’ boards from assuming directorship at other firms. “The final list of disqualified directors may touch up to 450,000,” Chaudhary said. “The companies which deposited money during demonetization are being investigated using artificial intelligence”. Breather Needed While the government’s move will boost investors’ confidence in India, authorities should ensure that companies and directors with genuine cases are given a breather, according to Abhishek Goenka, a Bangalore-based corporate tax leader at PwC India. “Currently the directors who have been disqualified have no recourse available to them,” Goenka said over the phone. The ministry is conducting massive data mining exercise to trail ultimate beneficiaries of these companies. Using data analytics and artificial intelligence, the information gathered will be used to take action against the offenders, the minister said. It’s also developing a state-of-the-art early warning system using artificial intelligence that will throw up red flags and provide information in case a company’s financial health deteriorates or if it’s transactions are suspect. “In the absence of technology we can be reactive but not proactive,” the minister said. “To be proactive it is necessary that we develop artificial intelligence.”

Afghan president arrives in Delhi, US secy of state to call on PM tomorrow

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 12:38 AM PDT

Afghanistan president M Ashraf Ghani arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday – a day after American Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, met him in Kabul to discuss the new US policy on Afghanistan.

Ghani came on a day-long visit to New Delhi on an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders are expected to review the entire gamut of multi-faceted bilateral strategic partnership, including the New Development Partnership, which New Delhi and Kabul agreed upon on September 12 last. The prime minister and the Afghan president will also hold consultations and coordinate on “furthering the shared objective of promoting peace, security, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan and efforts to combat the menace of terrorism. They will discuss regional and global issues of mutual interest,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement in New Delhi.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on the Afghan president soon after his arrival in New Delhi. They discussed bilateral and regional issues, Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson of the Ministry, said. The Afghan president is visiting New Delhi ahead of his proposed tour to Islamabad on an invitation from Pakistan Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa.

The Modi-Ghani meeting later in the day is going to be significant as it will be the first opportunity for the two leaders to exchange views on the new US policy on Afghanistan, which was announced by US president Donald Trump in August.

Trump announced his decision against hasty withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. He accused Pakistan of providing a safe haven to terrorists carrying out attacks in Afghanistan. He also sought a greater role for India in Afghanistan.

Tillerson, who was in Islamabad on Tuesday, will arrive in New Delhi later and call on Modi on Wednesday. India’s role in Afghanistan is likely to be on top of the agenda of Tillerson’s discussion with Modi. The US Secretary of State is also likely to brief the prime minister about his discussions with Pakistani prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and foreign minister Khwaja Asif as well as the outcome of the parleys senior diplomats of US, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan had at Muscat in Oman recently to revive the peace-process with Taliban, sources told DH.

Modi is likely to convey New Delhi’s view to both Ghani and Tillerson that the reconciliation initiative in Afghanistan will not succeed unless Islamabad is made to stop providing sanctuaries to terrorists in Pakistan or territory under its control. Modi last week sent his national security advisor, Ajit Doval, to Kabul to invite the Afghan president for a visit to India.

The Afghan chief executive Abdullah Abdullah visited New Delhi from September 28 to 30. Modi and Abdullah witnessed signing of an agreement by the two governments for training the police personnel of Afghanistan in India. The back-to-back engagements between New Delhi and Kabul followed Trumps call to India to play a greater role in Afghanistan to help stabilise the conflict-ravaged country. This irked Pakistan, which has always been jittery about India’s role in Afghanistan.

The US, however, sought to placate Pakistan over the past few weeks. Tillerson last week said in Washington DC that the Trump administration considered India as a “partner (of the US) for peace in Afghanistan”. He also said Pakistan too was an “important partner” of the US in South Asia.
