Star Fox Zero's motion controls can't be fully disabled Posted: 03 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PST IGN reports that, despite earlier claims, motion controls can't be fully disabled for Star Fox Zero. Nintendo issued a statement explaining that "motion controls cannot be entirely disabled in Star Fox Zero, although players will have some options to choose how they are implemented. The game was designed to be played with motion controls, and it would be incredibly difficult to complete certain areas of the game without the independent aiming and flight that they offer." Not great news for those of us who don't love motion controls (read: all of us), or for the game being accessible to players of all types. I can't think of a single game made better with motion control, though I've heard some people prefer it in Splatoon. I hope Nintendo reconsiders, but seeing as how Star Fox Zero is supposed to come out next month, I don't see that happening. 5 Big questions about Star Fox Zero Answered [IGN]

Helldivers is giving out free DLC for its first birthday Posted: 03 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PST I'm so glad I got around to trying Helldivers. It's right up there with Rocket League as one of the best things I've picked up through PlayStation Plus. In short, it's a tough (but rarely frustrating) tactical twin-stick shooter with shades of Starship Troopers. And the online multiplayer rocks. For its one-year anniversary today, the game is handing out some free content: a set of assault armor and the LAS-13 "Trident," a shotgun-like laser weapon. Even without upgrades, it's powerful, if a little unwieldy to aim (mind that friendly fire!). Here's how it looks: "We can barely believe how fast this year has passed," said Arrowhead. "Even though the schedule is very full planning and working on the Next thing nowadays, we certainly wish to stop and celebrate this glorious event and thank you all for spreading liberty and freedom with us." If you've been on hiatus, now is a great time to return to Helldivers even if it's just for the evening. The community has wiped out the bugs and now we're in the middle of an assault on the Illuminates' homeworld. Based on our current rate of progress, we should be able to take it soon. Then we'll just need to make one last push against the cyborgs to wrap up this war. HELLDIVERS forces celebrates one year anniversary! [Arrowhead Game Studios] Read more... |
Teslagrad is getting a 3D action-adventure follow-up Posted: 03 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PST Rain Games did quite well for itself with the magnetic puzzle-platformer Teslagrad. While its next game won't be a direct sequel, it's another adventure, and it's even set in that same universe. World to the West stars four disparate characters, all of whom hail from different nations and have varying abilities. This trailer doesn't really go into the story at all -- it seems far more concerned with setting the overall tone and feel of the game -- but it does show the heroes up close. There's a strongman, an orphan, a mind bender, and a Teslamancer. My first reaction to this footage is that the world seems barren in spots, but otherwise, I'm on board with what they're going for here. I'm not seeing any platforms listed yet, though I would expect this to hit PC at a minimum. World to the West will release sometime this year. Read more... |
A new look at Ron Gilbert's next point-and-click adventure Posted: 03 Mar 2016 11:30 AM PST Enough people said they wanted it, so the creators of Maniac Mansion are making a new adventure game in the same vein as those old classics. Back in late 2014, Ron Gilbert and Garry Winnick's Thimbleweed Park was successfully Kickstarted for $626,250; the original asking amount was $375,000. Since then, the duo has seemingly been making steady progress on the game. A press release we received today states that Thimbleweed Park is on track for a late 2016 launch. Accompanying that is a new trailer which gives a nice overview of some of the strange going-ons in the sparsely populated titular town. Thimbleweed Park is set to release on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, and mobile platforms. We'll keep an eye on it because if anyone knows how to make a point-and-click adventure, it's these dudes.

NightCry's Scissorwalker will be coming for you this Spring Posted: 03 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PST Nude Maker's NightCry (which you may remember as Project Scissors) has a dream team behind it that should excite fans of Japanese horror. Hifumi Kono, creator of the first two Clock Tower games, is directing. Masahiro Ito (Silent Hill's art and monster master) is making the spooky creepies that'll be pursuing players. Takashi Shimizu of Ju-on directing fame made a live-action trailer for the game. Add the little cherry of Michiru Yamane and Nobuko Toda composing on top, and you have a deathly dessert ahead of you. If that sounds delectable to you, this Kickstarter update saying that NightCry will be releasing on PC this Spring could be considered Sprinkles of Knowledge, and this dessert thing has gone too far. I'm hoping this ends up good, but the footage I've seen so far hasn't done much for me. Kyle thinks it looks terrifying, though! I'll cross my (scissors) fingers.

Tauros is how you objectively kick ass at Pokemon Posted: 03 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PST Everyone has their theory on how to be the best Pokémon trainer in the world. If you ask me, I'd say use that Charizard to obliterate anything that dares to challenge you. Work smarter, not harder. To coincide with the re-release of Pokémon Blue and two other games that aren't as good because I didn't have those ones as a kid, The Pokémon Company has put out its objective findings on how to kick some Poké-ass. In short: Get yourself a Tauros. He's fast, he's versatile, and he does bonus damage. It's an interesting read and well worth your time. It breaks down some specifics of battle mechanics, and lists more Pokémon to focus on and how to train them. Although, Charizard isn't mentioned once, so maybe you don't want to take The Pokémon Company's report at face value. Classic Link Battle Flashbacks! [Pokémon]

Posted: 03 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PST There may not have been news of Nintendo localizing Mother 3 for western audiences during today's Direct presentation, but hang in there, Negative Man. We're getting more Rhythm Tengoku! And another Paper Mario! It's going to be okay. Let's run through the list again:

Dragon Quest VII's western launch delayed until late 2016 Posted: 03 Mar 2016 09:43 AM PST Well, friends, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is Dragon Quest VII is still coming to North America and Europe later this year. The bad news is the RPG is no longer slated for a summer release, as it has been pushed back until the tail end of the year. Oh well. The 3DS remake came out three years ago in Japan, and has been torturing western Dragon Quest fans ever since. What's a few more months of waiting at this point?

Metroid Prime: Federation Force launches in late spring Posted: 03 Mar 2016 09:15 AM PST Metroid Prime: Federation Force is coming to 3DS in late spring, Nintendo just announced. Speaking during today's Nintendo Direct presentation, producer Kensuke Tanabe spoke about the title's development, which started in as 2009 on the Nintendo DSi. The development team eventually decided the portable's hardware wasn't capable of what they were envisioning for the project and scrapped it until the New Nintendo 3DS came along. Tanabe also said his team "wanted to use this new game to tell the story of the battle between the Galactic Federation and the Space Pirates," something Tanabe had imagined and wanted to do for more than a decade, but never had an opportunity to do. Despite sporting a new group of protagonists and only featuring series protagonist Samus Aran in a cameo role, Tanabe asserts Federation Force is something that "absolutely belongs in the Metroid universe." From the sound of it, it seems like Tanabe is well aware of the vocal contingent of fans who are upset over this spin-off's existence and want a new mainline entry. Read more... |
Bravely Second English trailer busts some Ba'als Posted: 03 Mar 2016 09:10 AM PST Agnès is in trouble, and it's up to some familiar faces (along with some newbies) to save her. That's fairly well known for the diehards who have been slurping down any information to come out of the Japanese release, but this English trailer gets the rest of us up to speed. We almost didn't post this, since it's footage for a game that's already out somewhere else in the world, but the quirky localization is something to behold. Did that guy just exclaim "For the gravy!" during his victory pose? Wait, that girl just said "Let's bust some Ba'als." Okay, we have to post this. Watch it below. Bravely Second: End Layer releases in North America on April 15. As a neat add-on, the free demo is out in a week, and it features a story not present in the main game.

Kirby Planet Robobot will be coming to 3DS on June 10 Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:55 AM PST Nintendo's lovable pink balloon is coming back to the 3DS in Kirby Planet Robobot, but this time he has a new trick up his sleeve: Robotic Armor. It has ten different modes to give you multiples ways to progress through levels, similar to his trademark copy ability. Each level will have a foreground and background so that you can jump back and forth. Planet Robobot comes with a separate co-op mode called Team Kirby Clash. Four players can choose from four different roles on a quest to defeat a boss. At the end of each stage, players gain experience so that they can level up and work towards more difficult quests. In each level, you can find pieces of a tablet that summons a giant meteor when combined. Download Play is available for friends who don't have the game yet, but bots can also be used as partners. Various amiibo can be used to give Kirby new abilities: for example, tapping Link to the 3DS gives Kirby the Master Sword. A UFO ability will be an amiibo exclusive. Brett has the details on the new line of Kirby amiibo. Kirby Planet Robobot will be released June 10.

Here's the new Kirby line of amiibo Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:51 AM PST Alongside the announcement of a new Kirby game, Nintendo has revealed that it's also releasing a small line of dedicated amiibo. As of now, there are only four amiibo in the Kirby: Planet Robobot line. A picture of them is below. Three of the four are characters we've already seen in the Smash Bros. line. Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight are the ones who are re-represented. The newcomer is Waddle Dee. Kirby: Planet Robobot launches on June 10 of this year. These new amiibo will release on the same day. Big day in Kirby's Dreamland. Read more... |
Rhythm Heaven Megamix is coming to the west Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:50 AM PST Known up until this point as Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+, we finally have confirmation of a new Rhythm Heaven game coming to the west. It's being localized as Rhythm Heaven Megamix, and it features a curated selection of minigames from all of the previous titles in the series, including the original Rhythm Tengoku for the Game Boy Advance, which didn't release outside Japan. So for most of us, there will be some new stuff in there. No solid date was given on its release at today's Nintendo Direct, but we can expect it some time this summer. Pose for the fans!

Wind Waker's Medli is coming to Hyrule Warriors Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:41 AM PST Medli from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is the latest character addition for Hyrule Warriors, and this time, you won't need to buy the upcoming 3DS version, Legends, to get her. She'll be offered for free in both versions of the action title alongside Legends' first paid DLC. As a reminder, Hyrule Warriors Legends hits March 25, 2016 and includes a transfer code to download and play as Linkle, Skull Kid, Tetra, King Daphnes, and Toon Link in the Wii U version. It'll also have a season pass available at launch, with four DLC packs coming this year.

Just fork over a cool 20,000 yen ($175) and this throwback is theirs. It could be yours too if you're willing to import and circumvent the region-locking. Just sayin': It'd be a pretty stylish way to relive those SNES classics on 3DS. @Wario64 [Twitter] Read more... |

There's a new Paper Mario game coming Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:25 AM PST That leak from yesterday didn't have everything about today's Nintendo Direct. Potentially big news for fans of Mario's role-playing games came out: the Paper Mario series is getting a new entry in Paper Mario: Color Splash. Details were scant in the video, but the first snippet of story was shown, with the trodden trope of "color is leaving, help bring back the color." Toward that end, Mario now has a paint hammer. Hopefully this entry gleans more from entries like Thousand-Year Door than the likes of Sticker Star.

SMT x Fire Emblem is called Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, coming to Wii U in the West this June Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:22 AM PST Genei Ibun Roku #FE, the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem crossover project, will launch in North America and Europe on June 24 as Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. The good news was announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation, where it was also revealed the localization will pair the original Japanese voice over with English subtitles. [Update: As noted by Sypran and other readers in the comments, the initials of Tokyo Mirage Sessions match those of Shin Megami Tensei in reverse. Now that's some clever localization!]

Super Mario Maker is adding keys and pink coins so you can make your levels more devious Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:18 AM PST In today's Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Super Mario Maker will be getting an update on March 9. When making levels, you can now add keys to unlock doors to gate progression. These keys can be hidden or placed on enemies so that you can force your players into mandatory boss battles. You can also add pink coins that have to be found before a level is complete, so you can be more devious when creating puzzles. The bookmark site will also add ranking categories for levels such as first completions. Man, levels are gonna get crazy.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympics coming to Wii U this June Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:16 AM PST We've known Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is debuting on Nintendo 3DS on March 18 for a while now, but a specific launch date for the Wii U version has been up in the air. Until today, anyway. As part of today's Nintendo Direct presentation, it was revealed the sports title will be coming to the home console across North America and Europe on June 24.

Nintendo isn't done updating Splatoon this year Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:15 AM PST "It ain't over yet for Splatoon." As discussed during the Nintendo Direct presentation this afternoon, the inky shooter will continue to improve this year with more updates. First up, a patch is dropping on March 8 (March 9 in Europe) that improves lesser-used abilities to make them more desirable, adjusts matchmaking and team assignments for ranked battles, and adds new Splatfest elements. Another update, a two-parter, is coming as well. The first arrives in April. There will be tweaks for existing weapons and new "weapon set recommendations" -- combinations featuring a selection of some of the "most popular and unappreciated weapons."

Nintendo announces Star Fox Guard, a new tower defense game Posted: 03 Mar 2016 08:12 AM PST At this afternoon's Nintendo Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto kicked off the show by announcing a new Star Fox game. It's called Star Fox Guard, and it looks to be a tower defense game. The way it works is that the player controls 12 security cameras that are strategically positioned around a winding map. By switching between them, they find and dispatch attacking enemies. The Star Fox tie-in seems to be that Slippy Toad is the camera operator. Miyamoto also mentioned that Star Fox Guard will release alongside Star Fox Zero on April 22. They two games will come bundled, or be available to purchase separately on the eShop. There was no mention of what individual or bundled prices will be.

Watch the Wii U and 3DS Nintendo Direct right here Posted: 03 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PST Two directs in one week? Madness! I wonder what spoiler-filled headlines we already wrote for the announcements today? Could we see a localization of Monster Hunter Generations? Dates for existing games like Metroid Prime: Federation Force? Probably. Alas, there will be no news regarding the Nintendo NX or the publisher's mobile operations, which includes the Miitomo app launching this very month. Hopefully we'll also get more info on the Nintendo account system. So yeah, sit back and we'll provide the news as it comes! Read more... |

EA's making half of its digital sales on sports microtransactions Posted: 03 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PST EA has made no bones about the fact that the extra content market plays a large role in its earnings. A year and a half ago, the publisher said it aimed for $1 billion in revenue annually from selling add-ons. Since then, it has exceeded those numbers due mostly to microtransactions in sports games. At a Morgan Stanley investor conference (and as reported on by GamesIndustry International), EA CFO Blake Jorgensen detailed the digital side of the business and mentioned that Ultimate Team purchases from the Madden, FIFA, and NHL franchises bring in around $650 million per year. "The extra content business is a [$1.3 billion] a year. Half of that is roughly our Ultimate Team business," he said. Jorgensen also inferred that it's these sort of additional sales that, in part, keep EA afloat. "We've been a leader in driving digital extra content for games, which really drives the profitability of this business." In the case of Ultimate Team microtransactions, the margins are almost pure profit. As if it weren't obvious already, EA has a lot riding on its annualization of sports franchises. Even if the individual games don't sell incredibly well, it can probably count on an extra couple hundred million dollars from microtransactions. That's enough that almost every title will be a guaranteed success to some degree. EA's Ultimate Team earning around $650 million a year [GamesIndustry International]

Dead Island: Definitive Collection embalms both games on May 31 Posted: 03 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PST There are too many metaphors to make about a zombie game coming back to life just a scant few years after its original release, so I'll do my best to refrain from here on out. No promises, though. Dead Island and its expansion Riptide will be packaged into one sewn-together cadaver called the Dead Island Definitive Collection. Both games will have improved textures, lighting, and framerate. There will also be a sidescrolling beat-'em-up/endless runner called Retro Revenge, which you may remember Kyle mentioning last month. The announcement trailer claims that this is "the ultimate zombie game series," which amuses me when Techland's own Dying Light is vastly superior (though I admit the tropical island setting was fun). According to Best Buy, the remastered collection will run you $39.99. If you're ready to return to Banoi, Dead Island Definitive Collection will be available for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 31.

Posted: 03 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PST The last wireless mouse I used was an ancient Toshiba with a battery life of about thirty seconds. The colours on the plastic had all faded, my fingerprints had been permanently imprinted into the buttons, and I’m pretty sure it had a mind of its own. I died many times in Call of Duty: World at War because of that thing. The experience put me off of wireless mice for a very long time, but now that I’ve had the chance to try out the Razer Mamba Chroma, I’m absolutely back on board. I’d even go as far as to say this might just be the best mouse I’ve ever used. Read more... |
Strafe is going to make 2017 feel like 1996 all over again Posted: 03 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PST Steven Hansen... Steven Hansen. Where do I know that name from? Eh, maybe it'll come to me later. Developer Pixel Titans has teamed up with Devolver Digital for its mid-'90s-feeling first-person shooter, Strafe, and that makes a whole lot of sense. The two seem like they'd be best buds. There's a new trailer, too. What's shown here looks noticeably better than what I played of the pre-alpha demo, which I enjoyed, and we're still quite a ways off from Strafe's release. It won't be ready for Windows (with Oculus Rift support), Mac, and Linux until early next year. And if you haven't come across it yet, the game's website, strafe1996.com, is good for a laugh. But only if you're over 18! Just be sure to double check that all of your plugins are up to date.
