Black Desert Online – 6 Issues with Launch Day

Posted: 03 Mar 2016 03:45 PM PST

As resident sandbox game expert and assigned Black Desert author, it falls on me to prepare our site's quality review on one of the biggest games to hit this year, Black Desert. And with launch here at last, I had to share the issues that have hindered the review coming out of the gates. Some of these are minor easily fixed issues, and my full review will give them the benefit of the doubt to do so as our score won't hit for a couple weeks while I fully explore what Black Desert has to offer.

1) Broken Combo Quest – Had to forfeit and re-take. Further, this quest was boring, repetitive, and didn’t teach you all that much. Sure, it introduced you to some combos, but why do you need to do the combo ten times? Couldn’t they just give you a resource to see all the available combos for your class? I was able to fix the quest by forfeiting and re-taking it. However, it seems like a decent number of people had to do a bit more work than that.

Black Desert Launch

I’m not the only one that had the bug.

2) Broken map. – Many people were unable to open the map, including myself. It wasn’t until a random moment – sometime after I had entered Velia – that I was able to open my map. Even then, the spam in Area chat was constantly mentioning the broken map. Eventually, word got out that the /reloadui command along with one or two other tricks could get it to work again. I never really thought about it, but I am entirely too dependent on in-game maps nowadays. I almost had a small panic attack when I went to open my map for the first time and nothing happened. I also thought the Cash shop was broken, too, until I realized it was simply disabled. Which brings me to the next point.

3) No Cash shop until actual launch – Along with the pre-order bonus claiming, this was the second biggest wrench in my plans (the first being points number four and five). I personally had prepared to purchase several key items for my progression plan. Well, lo’ and behold, all my planning was thrown out the window. This is one piece of information I wish would have been more easily found before the Early Access. Sure, the game is completely playable without access to the cash shop, and the items I wanted to buy were purely for convenience, but it was still kind of annoying. But, in the end, I feel I have to thank Daum for giving everyone a fair start. Well, almost… My next two points will explain what I mean.

Black Desert Launch

As you can see, it was added on the 3rd.

4) Requiring individual claiming of pre-order bonuses via the website, and then taking hours to get the items to the players. I didn’t receive my items until well after twenty hours after I had claimed them on the website. In the end, the issue was resolved and everyone had to re-claim their items. Well, almost resolved. See, it still took over twenty hours for me (and thousands of others) to get their items. And a decent portion of players found that they would absolutely not be able to receive their items until after the six or more hour maintenance that happened on the 3rd.

Black Desert Launch

Each time you have to choose a region, a server, and (in the case of costumes) a class to claim for. They also appear to be restricted to a single character/server… so one-time use only.

Generally, I wouldn’t mind it. It would be fun if everyone starts on the same exact footing with no special buffs from costumes or pets to do their looting for them. But some people got their items well before everyone else. Having that experience boost from the armor and the tier-five horse is a huge boost to your ability to get around to do quests and grind. And there was nothing more depressing than seeing someone zoom pass you on a tier five horse while you’re putting around on your shoddy tier-one horse you bought from the Horse Stable. Well, almost. You see…

5) While some of us got nothing, others got multiples of the rewards. Players with tier two or higher hawks have been spotted, others claim to have received double or triples of other rewards. There’s been screenshots of people with multiple hawks flying around them within an hour or so of the server opening; just head over to the Reddit or forums for proof. This kind of mishap with the Conqueror’s Pack items is impossible to fix, so Daum will have to work over time to figure out a way to appease the player-base. All I can say is good luck.

Black Desert Launch

This guy…

6) What server am I on? Many that logged during the first hours of the game may have found themselves forced onto the wrong server. This appears to have been limited to those on the Edan server who tried to connect to the Serendia 1 channel, but details are a bit murky when you take into account what players claim as opposed to what Daum has admitted. This issue was referred to as NA Server Character Placement Issue by the Daum team. Even now, a few days later, players are still incredibly angry over this. It’s gotten to the point where players are getting banned for discussing the issue too vehemently.

Black Desert Launch

Imagine this, but non-stop for the first several hours of the game.

But let's not focus entirely on what went wrong. There are two things that the Daum Europe team accomplished that made the early access quite nice. First, this was by far the most stable launch I’ve experienced with a pre-order MMO in recent times. Sure, the first fifteen minutes were a bit rough, but after that, everyone I knew (and saw on Twitch) was able to log in and play just fine for the most part. And second, they increased the spawning rate of the early mobs to deal with the first waves of players. Nothing is more annoying at a game launch than having to fight with thousands of other players to get one or two kills needed for early quests. And from my experience in the alpha and beta, I can say that the increased spawn rate was needed. What could have been an annoying fifteen minutes trying to find and kill a small number of starting zone mobs turned into a quick in-and-out experience.

This article may seem like I’m disappointed with the launch, but I’m not. Like I said, this is one of the smoothest launches I’ve experienced in recent years. The simple fact that I could actually play the game – which is what I paid $100 to do – during my early access period is incredibly pleasing. Could things have gone better? Sure. I mean hell, a decent number of players lost upwards of ten hours from the Early Start they paid for. But organizing something as large scale as an MMO launch is incredibly hard. Just thinking of the scale is mind boggling. While others may find it hard to forgive, I find that I certainly can, and I look forward to playing Black Desert for many months to come.

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for my full and detailed review.

Today, Paragon‘s team has made a major announcement for the game’s early access and its business model.

Paragon Founder’s Packs will go on sale on March 14, and Early Access will begin on March 18. Players who purchase a Founder’s Pack will get into early access with persistent progress (no wipes). Beta Weekends will also be held during Early Access for players without a founder’s pack.

Assetto Corsa PS4 Hands-on Impressions

Posted: 03 Mar 2016 12:34 PM PST

By Corey Vixie, Guest Writer

Simulator games aren’t for everyone. The ultimate appeal of any game with “real-world” roots is often in how it captures and gamifies the essence of its subject matter. A Guitar Hero or a Rock Band wins the hearts of its fans because it delivers the flavor of rock-stardom with a tiny, plastic guitar. If that experience resonates with you, you’re going to have a good time.

But what if you’re a serious guitarist, and the notion of a tiny, plastic guitar offends? You might gravitate more towards a game like Rocksmith, which is more representative of your real-world skills, and perhaps even because it’s a bridge too far for adherents of Guitar Hero’s simple playstyle.

So it is with Assetto Corsa. It makes no bones about being a hardcore simulator, and it is ruthless.

Now, I spend a lot of time driving. I autocross a C4 Corvette and a Datsun Roadster. I’ve been driving up and down mountain roads since before I had a license. When I sat down to try the PS4 version of Assetto Corsa, I strapped myself in, adjusted the wheel and pedals, and plowed my virtual Ferrari FXX-K straight into the wall of Barcelona’s turn 1. Woah.

Through painful trial and error, I discovered that Initial D and Burnout had been the tiny, plastic guitar to Assetto Corsa’s Stratocaster. This game demands a lot more respect and attention than even a closer equivalent like Forza. By the time I finally completed a lap of Barcelona without crashing the Ferrari, I was sweaty, tired, and beaming.

Here’s what I learned:

First of all, Assetto Corsa demands quality gear. I was lucky enough to try it with an off-the-shelf racing bucket and ThrustMaster’s T300RS wheel with the T3PA pedal set. The game communicates viscerally and effectively through the wheel – the Ferrari’s nose became light and the steering wandered at triple digit speeds, and the time spent on suspension simulation and laser-scanning the tracks has clearly paid off: I’ve never experienced a closer digital analog to real-world racing.

However, I was only given the opportunity to try hotlaps on one track, in the one car. I therefore can’t comment on how the game performs with multiple AI components and the added rendering complexity of other cars. What I can say from what I saw: there’s no visual degredation compared to the PC version, and the PS4 happily churns out a mostly-solid 60fps.

As for the Ferrari FXX-K, it’s 'exclusive' representation in the console version is nothing significant. True, it’s a monster, and it’s a handful to drive fast – especially with the assists turned off – but it’s not worth picking up this version of game just to try it out. More likely than not, it'll appear as DLC later down the line.

This is the kind of game where you want to cozy up to the coffee table in your living room with a great wheel, and experience some relatable cars at high speed. In other words, you won’t feel like a rock god, but you’ll get your friends to yell “Freebird.”

New Attack on Titan Mobile Game Coming in 2016

Posted: 03 Mar 2016 12:07 PM PST

GameSamba, NGames Interactive Limited, and Funimation Entertainment have announced today that they are working with Kodansha to develop and publish an officially licensed mobile game based on "Attack on Titan." The "Attack on Titan" game will be available in all major English markets for Android and iOS devices, and is expected to be released by the end of 2016.

The "Attack on Titan" game will be an action-driven title, allowing players all over the world to battle titans on their mobile devices. It will combine elements of runner and action games, in order to replicate the feeling of the titan battles from the anime series. Players will need to use careful planning – and quick reactions – to survive. There will also be deeper, persistent elements to the game, which will be revealed at a later date.

"We're very excited to work with NGames and GameSamba to create a game based on the wildly popular 'Attack on Titan' franchise," said Gen Fukunaga, CEO of Funimation Entertainment. "With more than 50 million copies of the manga in print, a 25 episode anime series, and last year's live action films, we're excited to show fans what we can do with a game."

GameSamba, NGames, and Funimation previously announced two, officially licensed mobile games based on "Fairy Tail" and "Tokyo Ghoul," and an officially licensed web game based on "Fairy Tail." These three games are set to release in 2016 – the "Fairy Tail" mobile and web games will be available in multiple languages worldwide and the "Tokyo Ghoul" game will be available in English worldwide.

Path of Exile: Ascendancy Launch Date Announced

Posted: 03 Mar 2016 11:43 AM PST

Grinding Gear Games announced today that it is ready to unleash the latest chapter for their hit online ARPG, Path of Exile. On March 4th, Path of Exile: Ascendancy and the Perandus Challenge League will be launched simultaneously at noon US Pacific time.

Path of Exile: Ascendancy introduces a host of new features, including:

  • The Trials of Ascendancy: Seeking a worthy successor, Emperor Izaro constructed deadly trials throughout Wraeclast to find candidates. Six types of lethal traps have been crafted by Izaro into elaborate puzzle rooms – an entirely new gameplay type for Path of Exile.
  • The Lord’s Labyrinth: Having proved your mettle in the Trials of Ascendancy, you earn the right to enter Izaro’s Labyrinth. Years have passed, but its traps are as dangerous as the day its doors were first opened. With an entirely new system for generating sequences of random areas, the overall layout of the Labyrinth shifts every day, uncovering new puzzles and secrets.
  • Emperor Izaro: Entombed forever in his own creation, Emperor Izaro lives on. You will face Izaro multiple times during the Labyrinth and the fight will evolve depending on your actions in previous encounters.
  • Ascendancy Classes: Long ago, nineteen competitors entered The Lord’s Labyrinth, each representing a different style of combat. Their powers can be claimed by those who prove themselves worthy by defeating Emperor Izaro. There are 19 new Ascendancy classes, each with its own additional Ascendancy Skill Tree to master.
  • Enchantments: Izaro’s power can also be used to infuse items with powerful properties. These enchantments trigger specific skills and effects to occur on certain conditions. Each time the Labyrinth is completed, you maybe add one of these enchantments to an item.
  • Powerful New Gems: Ascendancy introduces a set of devastating new skills and support gems to customize your character with.
  • Exotic New Items: Featuring dozens of Unique Items and Divination Cards designed by Path of Exile’s community, Ascendancy adds tantalizing power for players to discover.
  • Challenge Leagues: The launch of Ascendancy also marks the start of our latest challenge leagues. These leagues provide an ideal opportunity for a fresh start for returning players.

Launching alongside Path of Exile: Ascendancy is the Perandus Challenge Leagues. These brand new leagues offer players the wealth of the Eternal Empire. Discover caches of Perandus family treasure, slay their guardians and claim the coins contained within. Anyone lucky enough to uncover one of the lost caches will discover something remarkable: fistfuls of glittering coins that can be exchanged with Cadiro Perandus himself for vital equipment and ancient artifacts.
