This Wario-centric history video brings back some good memories Posted: 14 Mar 2016 04:00 PM PDT Wario games are legendary. They sum up Nintendo's goofier side, and many projects, which wouldn't have otherwise gotten the greenlight, were made possible because of Wario's involvement. He's one of my favorite characters that the publisher has ever created, and this new Did You Know Gaming episode celebrates his history. In addition to going through the traditional platformers Wario has appeared in, they also explore Game & Wario, including the fact that they started the project without the involvement of their supervisor, and just kind of sprung it on him when it was finished. Ha!
| That sure is a Bloodborne werewolf jerking off Posted: 14 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PDT On weekdays, I typically wake up to a couple hundred fresh emails sitting in my inbox. When events are happening, like this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco (which I'm not even attending!), things can get considerably more wild. Everyone has something to pitch. Against all odds, the first email that caught my attention today was, no joke, "A Bloodborne werewolf jerking off." I couldn't not click it immediately. Can you blame me? Upon further inspection, the email was from Darren. It contained a gif.
This might just be the crown jewel of funny physics-based mishaps in From Software games. Even better: the automated name for the gfycat link is "DefensivePoisedAmericanwarmblood." [Via reddit] |
Tales of Berseria still looks just lovely Posted: 14 Mar 2016 02:00 PM PDT Remember that new Tales game? That one with the silly endearing name? Yeah, Tales of Berseria! Bandai Namco is showing off some new footage for the upcoming PC, PS3, and PS4 RPG, and it looks amazing, as usual. The bright, beautiful art style is showcased well with some anime footage and a bit of gameplay, detailing some of the core cast and bits of the combat system. It's all looking great so far and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
AMD's Radeon Pro Duo dual-GPU may be the most powerful VR graphics card Posted: 14 Mar 2016 01:15 PM PDT There are two things holding my current PC back from being VR-ready: money, and my graphics card. AMD's newest GPU will help with the second thing, at least. During today's presser at GDC, AMD announced their newest liquid-cooled dual-GPU, the Radeon Pro Duo. For $1,500, you'll get 16 teraflops worth of performance, which I'm told is quite a large number of teraflops. The Pro Duo is meant to be the "world's first VR content creator platform" to enable "high-end VR content development." Time to start writing a ton of clickbait so I can build the VR machine of my dreams.
Zero Time Dilemma site opens with heaps of new info Posted: 14 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PDT The third entry of the Zero Escape franchise is still on for a 2016 release on 3DS and Vita, and Spike Chunsoft just unloaded a ton of new info by way of their website, including character rundowns. According to the developers, this is set between both existing games, and will fill in some unanswered mysteries. Zero Escape is a neat series but I'm not foaming at the mouth for this one. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors was good (if a little overrated), and Virtue's Last Reward didn't have that same spark for me. Zero Time Dilemma [Spike Chunsoft]
Comments of the Week: The 'still a week behind' edition! Posted: 14 Mar 2016 12:30 PM PDT Welcome back to Comments of the Week where your host, the ever-vigilant Dreamweaver, is here to bring you some of the best comments — said by community members such as yourselves — from last week! Wait, LAST week? Alright, you got me! Due to a wonky schedule, I haven't been able to keep up, so you're just now getting the edition that you should've gotten last week this week, and the edition that you're supposed to be getting this week — which was last week's comments — is hopefully coming this week... unless things come up and I'll have to push last week's into next week and this week's into the week after next. Ugh, it also doesn't help that I number them by editions and not by dates, so hopefully I won't forget that this week is number 59, 60 is the one that's supposed to be up and running, and 61 is what I'm supposed to be working on this week. Confused? Don't be! All YOU need to know is that — as always — the comments of this week, which is the comments from two weeks ago that was supposed to be posted last week, is separated into three categories such as... TRUTH: in Texas, a man not only bit off the head of a corral snake that bit him, but he even used his body as a tourniquet. LOL: there's no reason to laugh, that's fucking badass! WUT?: was his name John Doe? If you want even more confusion, you can check out last week's Comments of the Week, which was based on the comments said the week before, that was also done in the same week that I posted the two week before last's Comments of the Week.
Get a look at Frozen Synapse 2 in action Posted: 14 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PDT We knew Frozen Synapse 2 was coming, but we didn't get an actual taste of it until just recently. This new video shows off a bit of gameplay mixed with the series signature art style, and it's important to note that the sequel is now an open world game. The beta will be coming later this year, which will no doubt showcase the procedurally generated missions, advanced AI, and the faction system.
The key to beating OneShot probably won't be in the game Posted: 14 Mar 2016 11:30 AM PDT Adventure puzzle games have a history of leaning into the obscure to make things happen. Throw a bridle on the snake, and it'll turn into a horse! The logic may seem cloudy, but that's how you advance the video game -- like it or not. One of the first titles we saw at this year's GDC is similar, but puts a mighty twist on the concept. OneShot has plenty of puzzles lying within it, but the solutions are outside the game. They're somewhere within your PC, and it's up to you to figure out where they may be. The nuts and bolts of OneShot is an adventure game in a world where light is virtually non-existent. The sun has seemingly ceased to work, whatever events may have led to that. It's dark, and protagonist Niko is aiming to fix that. He carries around a functional lightbulb, which is the only source of light. All the typical puzzle elements are there. Scour the environment for collectible items and try to combine them in meaningful ways. OneShot's lead developer Matthew Velasquez assuages any concerns that these will prove to be too obscure. That's not what he's aiming for.
NIS' Rose and the Old Castle of Twilight still looks a lot like Firefly Diary Posted: 14 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PDT Rose and the Old Castle of Twilight is still coming along, and it's looking great. As a follow-up of sorts to Firefly Diary, this one will also go straight to the Vita, and possibly, the PC. This newest trailer from NIS gives us another glimpse at the gameplay and the narrative, which involves Rose, a young girl who wakes up in a dungeon. What a great way to start a day!
So uh, about Project Giant Robot, Nintendo Posted: 14 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PDT In a fairly routine interview with Miyamoto regarding the new Star Fox, TIME managed to come across one extra little tidbit that some of you more hardcore fans might find interesting. A few years back, Miyamoto and crew showed off "Project Giant Robot," a title that hasn't come to fruition yet, but was apparently being made into a full game at some point. After all, "Project Guard," shown at the same time, did become Star Fox Guard. Sadly, Miyamoto responded by saying, "'Project Giant Robot' was something we started as a second project, and unfortunately we haven’t yet decided to turn that into a full game." Rumors have been going around in recent months that the concept wasn't fun, so we may never actually see this come to fruition. Well, at least we have the prototype to look at! 9 Things Shigeru Miyamoto Told Us About the New Star Fox [Time]
Platinum's TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan releases May 24 Posted: 14 Mar 2016 09:30 AM PDT We have a couple of months left to call dibs on our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle of choice in Platinum's four-player action game Mutants in Manhattan (Donatello for me!). It's coming to PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on May 24, 2016, as reported by IGN. There's a new trailer, too. I haven't kept up well with the marketing materials for the game, but this boss-centric footage looks good. Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, Karai, Shredder, and a certain shark make an appearance. Coincidentally, as I write this, I've got a pizza getting toasty in the oven. It's almost pizza time! Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan Release Date Announced [IGN]
Japan is getting a pretty bitchin' Pokemon promo at KFC Posted: 14 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PDT Does anyone else use straws a lot? I have a giant pack of them in my house to use at all times. When I go out I don't tend to partake, but at home, there's nothing better than a giant glass of icewater with a straw. Anyway, these straw buddies over at KFC in Japan are really dope, and I want them -- all of them. Starting March 17 you'll be able to pick them up for 190 yen (roughly $1.50), or you could just spring for the 2500 yen complete pack, which nets you a stand, all six figures, six free drink coupons, and a tote bag. I doubt this will come here, since KFC is immensely bigger in Japan, but I can dream. Pokemon characters [Rocket News 24]
| Fullbright pushes Tacoma to spring 2017 Posted: 14 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PDT Tacoma, a first-person, space-set adventure from the makers of Gone Home, won't be out this year as originally intended. The developers have set aside another six months or so to "reexamine and rework a number of the core assumptions we'd held about the game." It's now targeting a spring 2017 release on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Xbox One. "As you can tell from this decision being made a full year before we plan to launch, this isn't a last minute 'we just need a little more time!' thing, but more of a 'we need to be responsible about giving the game more space to live up to its potential' kind of thing," said The Fullbright Company. After testing Tacoma with some trusted developers, a few questions bubbled up internally that got the studio to revisit certain elements. "How would gravity really work on a deep-space facility like Tacoma? What are we trying to say about the function and implications of Augmented Reality – and how does the player interact meaningfully with the story content in the game, in a fundamentally different way than anything we've worked on before?" That work took additional time, of course, but the end result should be all the better for it. Fullbright says it's "currently polishing up a sample of our newly-minted alterations to the core game into something showable that we'll be showing the world this coming summer." | Don't expect a Fallout movie anytime soon, says Bethesda Posted: 14 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PDT While the games to movie craze isn't anything new (your soul is mine!), more and more major companies are jumping on the bandwagon, with films for Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, Angry Birds, and Ratchet & Clank all slated for this year. But don't expect Bethesda to jump on anytime soon. According to producer Todd Howard, the publisher has tried to adapt something for film, but "nothing has clicked" just yet. He says that it's "stickier than Elder Scrolls," and that it "may happen," but no ideas have really made sense yet. | Star Wars Battlefront's Outer Rim expansion is $15 Posted: 14 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PDT The first of Star Wars Battlefront's expansions, Outer Rim, is dropping on April 5, 2016 for $14.99 as a standalone download. That's according to GameStop, which has pre-order listings up for the DLC on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Considering one of the perks of the season pass is two-week-early access, this add-on will presumably be available to those folks on Tuesday, March 22. Another retailer listing specifies the four new maps included (two on Tatooine, two on Sullust): Jabba's Palace, Palace Garage, SoroSuub Refinery, and SoroSuub Pipelines. Besides those maps, Outer Rim also adds Greedo and Nien Nunb as playable characters, Extraction mode, and an assortment of weaponry and Star Cards: the Relby V-10 rifle, DT-12 blaster pistol, Scatter Gun, Dioxis Grenade, and Adrenaline Stim. If it weren't my job to cover games, I'd be saying "no thanks" to this specific pack and waiting for all of the season pass content (which is bundled together for $49.99) to come out before making any decisions. Who knows how lively the Battlefront community will be by then, though. Star Wars Battlefront: Outer Rim [GameStop via Polygon] |
Posted: 14 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PDT I'm all for sittin' down and drinkin' one with the bros. I usually call co-op games bro-op games. I can laugh at silly, referential humor that mostly amounts to "remember that this movie existed?" I love '80s action movies just as much as the next guy. Theoretically, Broforce, a game that combines the above sentiments into one sweaty, buff, possibly (hopefully?) homoerotic package, should be something I could enjoy forever. But I just can't dig it, bro.
Posted: 14 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PDT 'Ello 'ello 'ello. I'm an here in sunny San Francisco (as I am most of the time, on account of living here) with Brett Makedonski and Zack Furniss in tow for the 30th annual Game Developers Conference. I can't believe we've been covering this show for 30 years, because it's not true; Destructoid has "only" been around for ten gosh darn years as of this month. We'll have a lot for you coming out the show this week as GDC joins the wrong side of 30. It is stuffed to the brim with VR as if you're not sick enough of it (or recoiled in fear at all the $500-$800 price tags). There are various talks and panels on a variety of things (like Mrs. Pacman or "Practical DirectX 12 - Programming Model and Hardware Capabilities"). The Game Developer's Choice Awards and Independent Game Festival are on Wednesday night if you're into prestige. Maybe we'll stumble home tipsy and find more Gabe Newell-related vandalism again. And of course there will be a load of run of the mill video games, both hotly anticipated and undiscovered, that we plan on writing about throughout the course of the week for all of you, our online pals.
Battlezone is coming to PlayStation VR first, then PC Posted: 14 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PDT Battlezone is a classic game through and through, and though I'm skeptical of Rebellion's upcoming revamp, I have hope. Rebellion says that this is going to be a PlayStation VR exclusive first, then it will hit PC after that. The story itself will be randomly generated across "dozens" of locales. If you complete the game multiple times, more weapons will unlock. You can see the official reveal trailer to get a glimpse as to what to expect. It looks okay?
Baby beats Street Fighter V's story mode Posted: 14 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PDT Wow, people weren't kidding when they said SFV's story mode was easy to beat. YouTuber PapaPaint set his six-month old loose on the game's hapless A.I. opponents, resulting in the most adorable display of fisticuffs I've ever witnessed. Make sure to watch to the end for a clutch finish. The little tyke is already displaying the poise of a tournament pro.
Posted: 14 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PDT Chris Carter may seem like the only Souls guy around here, but there are more of us lurking in the shadows, wishing we could review them too. When I saw that Ska Studios of Dishwasher fame was making its own 2D take on the Souls formula called Salt and Sanctuary, I mischievously grinned to myself and began patiently waiting. I selfishly figured it would be my best chance at getting to review this type of game without the ability to ruin the experience by impulsively Googling where to go next, or what the best character build was. Salt and Sanctuary was exactly what I was hoping for, but From Software might be casting them a few dirty glares in the near future.
Star Fox Zero to include an invincibility mode so people can 'see the game' Posted: 14 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PDT If you're not very good at dogfighting games but still want to experience Star Fox Zero, perhaps at a friend's house, you're in luck. Speaking to TIME, the legendary Miyamoto states that there will be an "invincible Arwing," similar to the White Tanooki Suit, for people to use. Miyamoto says this will be included so that players can "fly through and see the levels" if they want. Don't fret though, because as always, this is an optional mechanic. Miyamoto notes that there will be other challenging modes in the game, "such as a ship that does more damage, but which also takes more damage." As long as Zero is as open-ended as past games, with branching paths and hidden areas, I'm good. 9 Things Shigeru Miyamoto Told Us About the New Star Fox [TIME]
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair will arrive on Steam next month Posted: 14 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PDT Spike Chunsoft has sent over word that Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair will be available on Steam starting April 18. It's priced at $29.99, and will work with Windows 7, 8, and 10. Pre-orders will start on April 4, and will come packed in with a bonus mini-OST. Since the first one turned out pretty alright on PC, I have high hopes for this one. Now all we need is a PC port of the spinoff, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, and eventually, the third game (New Danganronpa V3, which isn't out yet in Japan). Danganronpa 2 [Steam]
Oddworld: Soulstorm is the Exoddus remake, set for 2017 Posted: 14 Mar 2016 03:45 AM PDT Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty did great justice to Abe's Oddysee. It took the already fantastic puzzle-platformer and made it friggin' gorgeous, up to today's resolution standards. It only made sense to do the same with the next game in Abe's story, Exoddus. As early as last April, we heard the team was doing just that. Now the project has an official name: Oddworld: Soulstorm. "Soulstorm" refers to the brew made from bones and Mudokon tears. Of course, it's up to Abe to put an end to that. It sounds like this remake will be more than just a graphical upgrade. Series creator Lorne Lanning says, "There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story we never got to tell. Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle." Oddworld: Soulstorm is being shown at GDC this week. Our own Zack Furniss will get to see more soon enough. The full game is still a ways off; it's currently scheduled to release during the second half of next year. [Thanks, LinkSlayer64!]
Axiom Verge is coming to Xbox One and Wii U Posted: 14 Mar 2016 03:30 AM PDT Plenty of people had the opportunity to enjoy Axiom Verge on the PS4 and PC platforms last year, but now more folks are going to get that chance. The developer announced this morning that the game is now being ported to the Xbox One and Wii U, and will be released later this year. No new features were announced for these updated platforms, and the Vita version is still in development, after the team hit a "home stretch" back in February.
| Microsoft just unleashed a huge bomb: open Cross-Platform play Posted: 14 Mar 2016 03:15 AM PDT Microsoft has always been pushing for some form of Cross-Platform play between their own line of consoles and the PC (Killer Instinct will have it with Windows 10 and Xbox One, for example), but this new development is something else entirely. The publisher noted this morning that it is expanding this notion to "other console and PC networks." Microsoft says that it is "up to game developers to support this feature," and if you want, Xbox Live players can still filter to just play with those on Live. Rocket League will be the first game to support this initiative. Microsoft's Mike Ybarra notes: "On cross network play: gamers want more people to play with. We're enabling that and giving devs bigger MP pools." So uh, yeah. This is huge, if people decide to support it. The ball is in Sony and Nintendo's court it seems (especially Nintendo's), as many PC developers would be stupid to not get in on this and expand and unite their userbase. | Review: Tom Clancy's The Division Posted: 14 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PDT When I embarked upon my journey with The Division, I saw potential. The map is well crafted, the sandbox gimmick is more justified than a lot of other similar games, and playing with friends is fun. But after squaring off against a number of bullet sponges and similar missions, I started to feel drained. The Division is a great shooter with an intriguing world to boot, but several frequently occurring shortcomings let it down. |
Fallout 4's Automatron DLC looks...okay I guess Posted: 14 Mar 2016 02:30 AM PDT Bethesda has released the first trailer for their Fallout 4 Automatron DLC, set to release this month as the first part of the Season Pass. It now has a final date of March 22 on all platforms. So far it literally just looks like a cheap mod, where various existing robot models battle each other. Cool on paper, especially if you love robots? Sure. But based on what Bethesda has told us, it old seems like a small storyline that will only keep us busy for a sort while. It's priced at $9.99.
Project Setsuna is coming west on PS4 and Steam as 'I am Setsuna,' Vita seemingly dropped Posted: 14 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PDT Project Setsuna, known as Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna in Japan, is coming west. The new title will be "I am Setsuna," and it will be released on both the PC and PS4 platforms this summer. Interestingly enough, the Vita release was dropped with the localization process and is nowhere to be found. Not only is the platform less popular in the west, but the portable version had longer load times than its counterpart (among other issues), which may have partially played into that decision. Either way, yes! I am Setsuna [Square Enix]
Maybe bloody advertisements in the women's bathroom aren't the best idea Posted: 14 Mar 2016 01:30 AM PDT Ha! So Hitman is out, and it's pretty good! I spoke to a few people in attendance who seemed to enjoy it, though I'm not sure if it was done in jest given the location, or if it's just a stone cold advertisement. I hope it's the former simply for the sake of comedy. Either way it's hilarious. graceblaise [Twitter]
Sierra announces King's Quest Chapter 3: Once Upon a Climb Posted: 14 Mar 2016 01:15 AM PDT The release schedule for King's Quest has been so lengthy, that I would probably lose interest if I didn't love it so much. Instead, I pine for more info every month, and now, we have a set release date for Chapter 3. It's called "Once Upon a Climb," and will hit all platforms on April 26. It will be focused on romance, specifically the meeting of King Grahame and his future wife, Queen Valanice. I suspect this one will be just as adorable as the rest.
