| Ubisoft can't keep up with demand for The Division's closed beta Posted: 29 Jan 2016 11:00 AM PST Ubisoft says it "can no longer guarantee access" to this weekend's closed beta for Tom Clancy's The Division due to "unprecedented demand." "If you have already pre-ordered The Division and have yet to receive your key, we're working closely with our partners to ensure that you receive it tomorrow when we send out the next batch of keys," the company said in a blog post today. "For those of you that have not pre-ordered but are on the waiting list, please know that we want to get as many people in the beta as possible. However, space will be severely limited for the rest of the beta testing phase due to high-demand." The beta began yesterday on Xbox One and rolled out earlier today on PlayStation 4 and PC. It'll only last until Sunday, January 31, so if you're curious, get in there while you still can. |
| More evidence that Danny DeVito needs to be the voice of Detective Pikachu Posted: 29 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST Some saint created the above trailer showing off what the English release of Great Detective Pikachu could be like if Nintendo takes notice of the petition to cast Hollywood sweetheart Danny DeVito in the starring role. The petition has blown up since we broke the story on it yesterday, quickly rising from around 8,000 signatures to over 25,000 with no signs of stopping. Surely Nintendo will do the right thing and offer DeVito the job after this overwhelming support, right? So far there has been no response from Nintendo, Game Freak, or DeVito himself -- perhaps they are just biding their time till a big E3 reveal given by the man who was the Penguin himself. |
| A story trailer in case you forgot what Twilight Princess is about Posted: 29 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST Twilight Princess is the Zelda game with the wolf and the orcs and the shadow monsters. There's a good chance you already knew that because Twilight Princess is nearly ten years old and was widely beloved. A lot of people have played this game. If that has all slipped your mind (or if it's new to you!), Nintendo has put out a story trailer for the impending early March release of Twilight Princess HD -- a remake for the Wii U. It's the same game you probably already know and possibly hold dear, just purportedly better. Regardless of where you fall, this overview is a nice little catcher-upper, two and a half minutes of what's to come. Also, there's a shot of Link standing idly in a stream, boots soaking wet. That seems like a good way to get the trench foot, and gangrene ain't the color of the Hero of Time's tunic. |
| I forgot to mention Tameem's f***hat in that Hellblade video Posted: 29 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST When I typed up that post about Hellblade's newest developer video, something jumped out at me: director Tameem Antoniades' hat. I made a mental note to mention it, but then ended up focusing on the motion capture. I've made a grave mistake, and I'll hope you'll allow me to make amends. As Antoniades calmly explains the importance of animation, he's wearing a black hat with the word "FUCK" triumphantly scribed in Ye Olde English font. Through the art of the journalistic process (Google), I found that you, too, can be 'lil Tameem for the price of one hundred and ninety-five goddamn dollars. And that's 35% off, so get it while you can! Why the hell would you pay more than twenty dollars for a hat. Why. |
| Beautiful and unwieldy Xbox Ones for the Chinese New Year Posted: 29 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST The Chinese New Year is rapidly approaching, beginning on February 8 (thanks, Wikipedia!), just little more than a week away. Microsoft commissioned eight local artists from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to design Xbox Ones to commemorate the arrival of the Year of the Monkey. All of their fantastic designs can be seen in the gallery below. Interestingly, only two artists didn't add any sort of bulk to the console, instead opting to only paint on it. And, maybe it's kind of telling that only a single person incorporated the Kinect into their work. What Microsoft plans to do with these is anyone's guess. These obviously won't be available at retail, given that they're all one of a kind creations. Auctioning them off for charity would be a nice touch. However, if they want to practically bring anything here to store shelves, I think that banana controller might make its way into a number of homes. | Jonathan Blow says The Witness is very popular among pirates Posted: 29 Jan 2016 08:30 AM PST The Witness is very popular this week, but popularity and revenue don't always correlate directly. There's a whole subset of people out there who prefer to get their games through nefarious, illegal means and The Witness has found itself as a prime target. According to lead creator Jonathan Blow, The Witness is the top-pirated video game on a "certain popular torrent site" which he declined to name. Blow lamented that "Unfortunately, this will not help us afford to make another game." In a subsequent tweet, Blow expressed the slightest of silver linings in that more people will be able to play it. Still, that consolation doesn't help his bottom line or his ability to start another project. It's not a new phenomenon for Blow who stated that Braid, his first game, saw the same degree of illegal downloading. It's enough to make him consider some sort of DRM protective measures for whatever he does next, although Blow said he "[Doesn't] like DRM because [he thinks] people should have the freedom to own things." Undoubtedly, The Witness' piracy popularity is a combination between people being curious because of its critical acclaim, mixed with an unwillingness to pay $40 for an "indie" digital-only title. It isn't ideal, but it's also the inevitable cost of doing business on the Internet. The only way to cut back on it, like Blow says, is to implement some sort of DRM for his next title -- hopefully Blowplay or Blowrigin. @Jonathan_Blow [Twitter] |
| You've got the right stuff, Detective Pikachu Posted: 29 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST I've been following Great Detective Pikachu for years, and what a journey it has been. There was a time when we just had a scant few seconds of nightmarish facial-capture footage to go on for the 3DS game and even then, in its infancy, I was intrigued. But now that it's nearing release (February 3, 2016 in Japan) and we know the full story -- that sometimes Pikachu is an English-speaking, upright-walking private eye -- I think I'm in love. These latest screenshots, you guys. Oh my goodness. |
| Watch Ninja Theory make this mocap lady do silly shit for Hellblade Posted: 29 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST I'm quietly anticipating Ninja Theory's Hellblade, and its transparent development videos have been stoking that fire. I always enjoy watching how games are made, and confirming that I know dick about the process. In this latest video, the team talks about using both traditional animation techniques and motion capture to make Senua a convincing lead character. To make mocap work, they have the woman in the video do things like walk against a resistance band to simulate wading through water, and fall off of objects onto pillows. I can never watch stuff like this without wanting to spend at least one day of my life with those funny light bulbs all over my body. |
| These are the parkour playgrounds you'll traverse in Dying Light: The Following Posted: 29 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST There's little more than a week until Dying Light: The Following releases and we can all start drop-kicking the undead off of buildings again. Adding to an already steady flow of pre-release footage, Techland is showing off the new locations that players will be jumping and driving through in this Exploration video. There's a granary that's supposedly a "parkour paradise," an old graveyard with a spooky new night monster, and a race track, to name a few of the new areas. Since traversal was the highlight in the original Dying Light, I'm eager to see if the driving quickly wears thin or if it's satisfying in its own right. I'll know soon when I review it, and I'll tell you about all of the weird thoughts in my head, such as "How many attempts at drop-kicking would it take for me to break my hip?" |
| Friday Night Fights - Krang-arang Rufio! Posted: 29 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST Huh. That thing kind of freaks me out... yet... deep down, I want to stick the D in it. I wonder if it has teeth? Hrm. Moving on... How is everyone this week? Doing good? Ready to play some games together? Sign up below if you want to host! I'm taking this week off myself. Had a rough time at work this week. Sore as hell and I just want to veg out and binge on some Person of Interest. Pretty addicted to that silly show. I'm on season 3 now and... things are getting sci-fi like. Speaking of that, roguelike Space Grunts is pretty darn sweet (Rooooooooob). I really dig its gameplay and it has a great feel as well. I've also been playing a lot of Crashlands, both on my PC and my phone. The cross-save thing is awesome. The game itself feels like a blend of Don't Starve, with a dash of RNG in the crafting of stuff. Crafting weapons and armor, produces different results to a neat little effect. Sometimes you might get an awesome lightning hammer, other times just a regular one. That sort of thing. Anyway, penis. Let's play some games. |
| Review: LEGO Marvel's Avengers Posted: 29 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is intimidating, to say the least. In addition to all of the feature films there's also official tie-in comics, one-shot short films, multiple sequels that set up sequels, and now, eight separate television shows with multiple seasons across two networks. If you haven't been at least following the movies, LEGO Marvel's Avengers probably isn't for you. |
| Harvest Moon-like Stardew Valley is out on February 26 Posted: 29 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST It seems like it's been forever since we last checked in on Stardew Valley, a pixel art farming life simulator/role-playing game that evokes memories of Harvest Moon in those fortunate enough to have played it in its prime (on the Super Nintendo). Since then, Chucklefish (of Starbound fame) has picked it up as the publisher, and has been teasing bits of gameplay every so often. That teasing ends soon, as Stardew Valley is set to release in just under a month on PC; it is scheduled to release on February 26. I honestly don't know if I can get lost in a farming RPG (farmPG?) at this stage in my life. I definitely feel the draw of it, but know I can't afford to lose as many hours to this as I did with Harvest Moon back in the day. Cursed real life responsibilities keeping me from my pixelated responsibilities. |
| Lupe Fiasco is going to kick Daigo's ass in Street Fighter V Posted: 29 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST Things are popping off in the hip hop world this week. Kanye lied about not liking his ass eaten after a deluge of tweet beef with Wiz Khalifa. Kanye eventually deleted the 20 or so tweets aimed at Khalifa, but they still exist online. While Kanye might've really opened up because of misunderstanding the "KK" in a Khalifa tweet to be a reference to his wife, Kim Kardashian, rather than a reference to weed, Khalifa was likely only on West's radar for a few earlier tweets knocking West for using "Waves" as an album name. And while the Kanye's Khalifa barbs were righteous, he loses points for hurriedly hiding the fact that he likes his ass eaten. There was also pharma's man-boy villain Martin Shkreli, after making $5 million bail, calling Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah "an old man that’s lost his relevance," which is a weird thing to do when you buy someone's album for $2 million. Shkreli threatened to erase Ghost's verses on the new Wu-Tang album, which Shkreli has the lone copy of, after Ghost called Shkreli a "shithead" and "the Michael Jackson nose kid." Shkreli delivered his message (and demanded an apology) in a recorded a video with goofy masked goons behind him, in an effort to...scare Ghost? I know Shkreli was arrested before he quickly put up five mil, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't in jail or arrested as many times as Ghost. Also he looks you spliced Michael Jackson, Michael Ian Black, and a baby. |

| Review: American Truck Simulator Posted: 29 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST I live in New Jersey, so I think I know a thing or two about California. After all, I've listened to plenty of N.W.A. and Tupac, plus I've seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Oh, and I've been to California a whole lot to visit my brother and for that one E3 I attended. Does this make me an expert? Yes. Yes it does. |
| Star Trek Online kicks off its 6th anniversary celebrations Posted: 29 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST Star Trek Online turns six years old this week, and it's time for developer Cryptic to celebrate the fact as is the custom: By holding its yearly anniversary event. Players that log in between now and February 24th can participate in a number of festive events, mostly involving playing minigames for Q to earn rewards that can be traded in for a fancy new playable starship. The anniversary also opens with a new story mission, titled "Time and Tide", kicking off a new overarching plot for the game, involving time travel, technobabble, and deep cuts into Star Trek lore. In related news, Star Trek itself is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year as well, and Cryptic have hinted that big things are in store for Star Trek Online to commemorate the occasion. | Posted: 29 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST "It's so hard to believe this is real. It's like a video game or something." A random soldier told me this in Bombshell and it's not the worst meta dialogue in the game. Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison is quick to complain about video game contrivances like needing to search for six strewn about crystals to open a door, or constantly needing to find control panels and hit buttons to drop far off laser walls. Having the protagonist complain about boring game design doesn't mean it's not there. |
| Peter Stormare returns in Call of Duty's new ad campaign Posted: 29 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST Peter Stormare has entertained me for years, and is one of the greatest character actors of our time -- Fargo, Big Lebowski, Bad Boys II, Until Dawn, hell, even Prison Break -- classic performances. Now he's back to promote Call of Duty, returning to his character "The Replacer" in this newest trailer for Black Ops III. In addition to a few amusing sketches there's also a decent amount of footage for the Awakening DLC, set to debut on PS4 next week. Skyjacked looks particularly interesting, poised as an inventive remake of Black Ops II's Hijacked. |
| Posted: 29 Jan 2016 02:15 AM PST Want to feel old? You'll never believe which 3D Realms game turns 20 today! Duke Nukem 3D was released on January 29, 1996, two decades ago. At the time it was not only a great shooter (my favorite by far), but it also sparked a ton of controversy, an element of the gaming world that hasn't changed all that much to the day. This was due in part to its ingenious map design, which had secrets on top of hidden areas in ways that most shooters simply didn't match at the time. I'm celebrating, gore and suggestive content in all, by playing the Megaton version later. One of my favorite Duke memories probably involves the options menu, of all things. My parents used to lock me out of the more mature settings, and since I couldn't guess the password, I would uninstall the game, reinstall it, and after I was done playing, put in my own code. They would assume the game was mistaken and leave it locked. Now kids are carded for games! Are you sure you aren't feeling old yet? |
| Review: Rise of the Tomb Raider - Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch Posted: 29 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST Rise of The Tomb Raider's main campaign, while lengthy, tries to keep its gameplay grounded for the most part in realistic threats. The game's first story DLC, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, turns that on its head, replacing human enemies with ghosts, monsters, and spooky skeletons. Like the idea of supernatural elements, more difficult challenges and some interesting character development? This DLC is probably going to be a welcome addition to Tomb Raider's core plotline. |
| Another Wii U app bites the dust, probably because no one is using it Posted: 29 Jan 2016 01:30 AM PST I'm sad that the Wii U hasn't hit it off with a lot of third party developers and the general public. It seems like every day an awesome looking game is announced for litrally every platform but the Wii U -- a platform where the intutiive GamePad could be put to good use. This sadness is twofold, as a number of projects (including Wii U TVii, which shut down last August -- remember that?) have closed up shop, a shadow of what might have been from Nintendo's initial boisterous E3 conference, riding the Wii and hoping to have lightning strike twice. The latest one on the chopping block is Wii Street U, a joint venture from Google. It was hyped as a "new perspective" on Google Earth, but now, it's going dark on March 31, 2016. IF you use the software, plan accordingly. I still really miss Everybody Votes. Discontinuation of Wii Street U powered by Google [Nintendo] |
| Rise of Mana will cease to exist in March Posted: 29 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST The newest Mana game in the series will be no more, come March. Square Enix has announced that Rise of Mana, the free-to-play game that hit the mobile and PSP circuit will end its service at that time. Evidently not enough money was to be made from the venture, so after a consultation, they decided to end it. Currently it seems like the game will just shut off in March, but Square Enix is "investigating" whether or not they can alter the package so that people can acquire it in some way or another (likely a retail release). Some would say...this is how it should have always been? Rise of Mana [Square Enix via Gematsu] |
| Metal Gear Solid V, a Hideo Kojima game, ships over six million Posted: 29 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has shipped over six million copies, the company who formerly employed Kojima announced. This comes by way of their fiscal quarter report, which specifically boasts numbers for Metal Gear Solid V, in addition to their typical health, mobile (bolstered by 19 million Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū downloads), and pachinko/pachislot earnings. Another big takeway from this report is that the publisher only has two major releases slated for localization -- two Yu-Gi-Oh titles. They are not Hideo Kojima games. | Square Enix finally reveals Ramza in Dissidia Final Fantasy Posted: 28 Jan 2016 11:30 PM PST Finally! After dancing around it for weeks and teasing his lower body, Square Enix has showed off Ramza's character model in Dissidia Final Fantasy. He's currently set to debut at some point in the near future on the arcade edition in Japan, and likely, the console edition whenever Square decides to reveal it. If you visit his official landing page you can hear his voice actor, and a bit from his theme (excuse me while I immediately go play Final Fantasy Tactics again). Ramza is the last character launch for the base game, but Square has noted in the past that they want to make many more fighters, up to and "over 50." Ramza [Square Enix] |
| The Division PC pre-order deals that include beta access Posted: 28 Jan 2016 10:30 PM PST Ready or not (hopefully more on the ready side) Tom Clancy's The Division is slated to release March 8, 2016. The weekend beta has already started up on the Xbox One yesterday and has just went live for the PC and PS4 as of 4 AM Pacific Time today. Its a closed beta, so if you didn't receive a key in the past few days and you missed out on the Nvidia giveaway yesterday -- your options now are to overpay for the beta key on eBay/key marketplace... or yep, pre-order the gorram game. For those that actually have made the decision to buy the game (beta or not), we've found some pre-order deals on The Division with beta access (re: authorized retailers). The discounts aren't too shabby either, you can save almost 29% off thanks to currency conversion magic. Tom Clancy's The Division Pre-Order DealsGamesPlanet

| EA wants you to trust it, PC gamers Posted: 28 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST EA is on a mission. "We are on a journey to regain the trust of the PC gamer,” said Peter O’Reilly, senior marketing director for Origin. “Over the last couple of years we have focused on ensuring a great play experience from launch and bringing players a better experience on Origin with programs like the Great Game Guarantee, On the House, and now Origin Access. We’re excited about the progress we’ve made, but are always pushing ourselves to innovate on behalf of players.” Issues with PC versions of games like Battlefield 4 and SimCity have prompted the calls for that “better experience” O’Reilly is talking about, and prompted the introduction of Origin’s refund policy. We recently reported that Origin Access launched in Europe, and that EA’s CEO is keen for you to know that the publisher is not just a “corporate beast”. | Get ready for free new Blade and Soul content next month Posted: 28 Jan 2016 08:00 PM PST New end-game content is heading to MMORPG Blade and Soul on February 10. The free update, Rising Waters, will include three new max-level PvE content, including a 6- or 4-player Heroic dungeon called Bloodshade Harbor, Mushin’s Tower, and Hongmoon Level 5. |
| The new Mass Effect, Titanfall, and Battlefield games will be released by March 2017 Posted: 28 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST Looks like EA is in for a busy year, because we’re getting the new Mass Effect, Titanfall, and Battlefield games sooner than you might’ve thought. According to EA’s Q3 financial report, the company is planning to release a new, as-of-yet untitled DICE-developed Battlefield game by the holidays. Considering last year we saw the release of Visceral Games' Hardline, I bet this one will be Battlefield 5, the next proper, numbered entry in the series. They’re also planning to have Mass Effect: Andromeda and the follow-up to Titanfall out by the end of the 2017 fiscal year. That means we could be seeing them as early as October, or as late as March 2017, assuming they’re not delayed at all. Seeing as EA is going to be pulling a Nintendo and hosting its own event separate from E3 this year, are these the games they’re getting ready to show off?
