Tap My Katamari is coming soon so you can click click click while you poop poop poop

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST

Just a few weeks ago, Jordan "Eagle Eyes/Good Legs" Devore wrote about Bandai Namco filing a trademark for Tap My Katamari. Now we have confirmation that it'll be what kids call a "clicker," and it's coming soon. You can find the wacky trailer, in which the King of All Cosmos showers so hard he breaks the stars, at the bottom.

I've never played a clicker, but I might break that streak for some Katamari Damacy goodness. Toilet gaming takes up most of time anyway.

And if you're planning to pick the game up then, you might want to take advantage of this week's PlayStation Network sale, which has the (cross-buy compatible) PlayStation 4 version discounted to $13.99, down from the original $19.99 asking price.

It's also going for $9.99 on Steam at the moment, if you're on the lookout for an even better deal.

Tales of Symphonia is coming to Steam on February 2, Bandai Namco announced today.

The GameCube classic will be available free to anyone who pre-ordered Tales of Zestiria via Steam prior to its October launch, though there's no word on how it will be priced for everyone else.

Tales of Symphonia has also been released on PlayStation 2 and on PlayStation 3 in a high-definition bundle with its Nintendo Wii sequel, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

The next entry in the series, Tales of Berseria, will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PC next year.

Super Mario Maker course finding website is up

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

I love me some Super Mario Maker. I think it's one of the coolest things Nintendo has done in years. But its lack of in-game course browsing and searching tools is utterly baffling. The rudimentary tools for finding the levels you want would be a deal breaker if the rest of the package wasn't so good. While it isn't perfect, Nintendo has addressed the problem somewhat with a new website, Super Mario Maker Bookmark, that is dedicated to steering you (auto-course style) towards the best Mario Maker levels out there (which is ironically away from auto-courses).

The site offers a recommendations section pointing out particularly well received levels and, thankfully, some search tools to help you find your own personal flavor of Mario goodness. Looking at the search terms available though, you still can't search by user which is fairly disappointing, but what we've come to expect from Nintendo's unique take on online gaming. Still, I'm sure this will be a welcome addition for anyone who has been frustrated with the game's anemic search tools.

Fallout 4 missing in Steam's Winter Sale? It's 34% off at GMG

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST

Gamers waiting for Steam's Winter Sale to see if Fallout 4 would be discounted got a big of a disappointment this morning, but Green Man Gaming has revamped its respective Winter Sale with one additional hot deal.

For a limited time (we honestly don't know how long this deal will last), you can get Fallout 4 on PC/Steam for 34 percent off. That's only $39 for one of better title of 2015.

If you've been looking forward to doing mindless randomly generated "settlement being attacked" quests, or dealing with an okay-but-not-great main storyline, this is your chance to shine!

Cynicism aside, Fallout 4 was a relatively well-received title and there is plenty of modding fun to be had once you get the initial game out of the way.

Destructoid's award for Best Mobile Game of 2015 goes to...

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST

There were some great slow-paced, methodical games up for this award (Lara Croft GO, Alphabear), but Downwell proves twitch action can still work on phones. It achieves this through its dedication to simplicity. Three colors. Three buttons. That's all you need.

Downwell wowed Steven enough that he said in our review he wants a dedicated handheld device to play it. It impressed the rest of us enough to garner nearly 40% of the votes in its category, nearly double the number of the next runner up. It's the type of game I can imagine keeping around for years, playing whenever a moment frees up.

Though it's more tactile with physical buttons, Downwell's biggest problem on mobile is that it's currently exclusive to iOS. The Android version is on its way, and it can't become available soon enough.

[Incomplete products like Steam Early Access titles and episodic games that are not fair to assess as standalone experiences, without a full episode count, were not eligible for this year's awards. The cutoff for entry into Destructoid's 2015's Game of the Year awards is December 4, 2015.]

Comments of the Week: Praise the goddess, SANTA'S COMING!

[It's a Christmas miracle! -Jordan]

No, not in that way! Well, maybe. I mean, I don't know what he does to Mrs. Claus in the morning.

Welcome back to Comments of the Week! As you know, this is the community showcase where I compile all of the crazy comments, that'd been said over the week, all in one place! Like the jolly holly man, I know what you kids have been up to, and whether you've been naughty or nice. SO BE GOOD, FOR GOODNESS SAKE!

Unless you're in the bedroom. Then be bad. SO BAD.

Anyway, the holiday season is all about spreading good cheer, and nothing says that like lively laughs and frantic faps! As always, comments are placed into three categories:

TRUTH: I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus!

LOL: I didn't know she was a chubby chaser!

WUT?: Why is daddy jerking off and watching them from the corner?

If you didn't stop by last week, then check out My Gift to You: last week's Comments of the Week. Don't say I never gave you nothing!

If you want to see what it's like for the elves to pump one of these babies out, then check out the behind the scenes blog about some of the work and thoughts that go into making each edition of Comments of the Week! You might want to make sure you're hiding behind some curtains, because it's also totally NSFW!

Square Enix's newest Humble Bundle is worth a look

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 08:40 AM PST

Square Enix is back for yet another Humble Bundle. You probably own at least some of these by now, but if not, your patience has paid off.

Pay $1 or more:

  • The Last Remnant
  • Life is Strange Episode 1
  • Tomb Raider I, II, and III
  • Murdered: Soul Suspect

Pay more than the average:

  • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (this is a subscription-based game)
  • Just Cause 1 and 2
  • Front Mission Evolved
  • Gyromancer
  • Yosumin
  • Coupons: 20 percent off Just Cause 3 and 33 percent off the Life is Strange Season Pass
  • More games to come

Pay $8.99 or more:

  • Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris
  • Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition
  • Hitman: Absolution Elite Edition

The lowest tier is an easy recommendation to make. I only wrapped up Life is Strange this week, and overall, I quite liked it -- particularly Dontnod's interpretation of the Pacific Northwest.

Destructoid's award for Best Vita Game of 2015 goes to...

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

The PlayStation Vita has not had the strongest year for releases. With some of the system's biggest exclusives moving to PS4 and a drastic reduction in the number of new games being produced by first-party developers, many have been predicting the death of the handheld.

But wait, the Vita isn't dead yet. There's still new games being released, particularly if you're a fan of weird, slightly esoteric Japanese titles. In fact, perhaps nothing sums up the Vita's year of releases as well as the winner of Destructoid's award for Best Vita Game of 2015, Persona 4: Dancing All Night.

Persona 4 Golden is an absolutely huge JRPG about acceptance, fighting monsters in a TV alternate reality, and magical beings born from emotional connections. Persona 4: Dancing All Night is a direct sequel about dancing. All night.

While in many ways tonally and mechanically distinct from its precursor, Dancing All Night does retain some of the traits that made the original JRPG great. The visual novel portions, the endearing characters, the writing quality, and the narrative connections remain fully intact. Dancing All Night is a worthy sequel to Golden, in spite of its many differences.

Dancing All Night wasn't perfect. The way it handled scoring is flawed and at times the narrative slows down for a little too long, but after finishing the game the memorable elements completely outweighed the minor issues. Dancing All Night is definitely a Persona game, but it takes enough risks to feel fresh and exciting by comparison.

Lightsabers in Fallout 4 is, scientifically speaking, something the Internet should like

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

Possibly the laziest route to garnering online favor is to take a thing the Internet likes and put it in another thing the Internet likes. There are countless examples of this all the time, but a good recent one is the Batman v Superman trailer mashed up with "The Dayman" from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The creator had a hit on his hands with no actual creating necessary -- just some light editing to make everything line up.

Right now, Star Wars and Fallout are two things the Internet is wild for, meaning that they're ripe for this type of inelegant jamming together. Game tinkerer invalidfate made a mod where lightsabers can be used in Fallout 4's Commonwealth Wasteland (and it can be downloaded for free). Admittedly, implementing a game mod is significantly more impressive than the trailer instance, but the underlying sentiment stands.

If getting some of that Star Wars in your Fallout is something you're (liberty) primed to do, make sure to check out this video that explains how to actually activate the mod. Equip blue, red, pink, or green as you go on a fetch quest to recover the lost Midi-chlorians or whatever.

We'll have to wait a bit longer for Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

Recent talk about the best games of the year has me itching to play Ori and the Blind Forest a second time. I may yet, but I'm probably better off waiting for the retuned, expanded Definitive Edition.

It was initially scheduled for release on PC and Xbox One this year, but Moon Studios has since shifted to a "spring 2016" launch window with promise of "more news to share soon."

I'm curious to hear what the exact pricing will be for people who own the existing version of the game. Last I heard, there is going to be some sort of discount offered.

Monster Boy captures that classic platformer spirit

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 06:40 AM PST

I haven't actively followed Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom since its announcement in January, but that has worked out fine. It's back on my radar today with a debut gameplay trailer.

Monster Boy is a side-scrolling action title similar to Sega's well-liked Wonder Boy / Monster World games. In fact, the creator of that series, Ryuichi Nishizawa, is on board for this project.

Nice to see this style of game live on, huh?

Telltale plans to implement cloud saving

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

Telltale Games rep Job Stauffer recently confirmed that cross-platform saving, most recently seen in Minecraft: Story Mode, is something the company plans to implement going forward. The feature is exclusive to Telltale Games Account users, and is only available for players who split their time between PC/Mac and mobile.

Although Minecraft is currently the only title that provides cloud saving, Stauffer told us that we would see the feature utilized in future Telltale games "for sure." Additional platforms are also a possibility, which sounds great for people like me who start these titles on consoles before remembering that they should be played on PC first and foremost.

Stauffer mentions the feature was inspired by the user continuity seen in streaming services like Netflix and Amazon; if you're watching CW's excellent science-fiction drama The 100 in one room on your Roku before getting kicked off the device by your family, you can move to your Xbox One in the other room and pick up where you left off. It's something that definitely makes sense for an account-based streaming service, maybe a little less so for most video games.

But it definitely fits for Minecraft: Story Mode, at the very least. Kids are the target demographic for this brand, no getting around that. Since modern children split their time between dedicated gaming systems and mobile devices so frequently (I've seen ice-blooded children play Five Nights at Freddy's on their iPod in an Outback Steakhouse without flinching), it makes sense to have both versions of the game in lockstep. I bet Telltale is hoping those kids find something to appreciate in the Telltale House Style™, bringing their double-dip habits over to the company's next release.

Wild Arms 3 and four other PS2 titles listed for PS4

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

The ESRB has pointed to another batch of PlayStation 2 games expected to appear on PlayStation 4. Based on recent listings by the video game ratings board, the console will get Ape Escape 3, Okage: Shadow King, Primal, Siren, and Wild Arms 3. When, exactly? That's unclear.

The King of Fighters 2000 is "coming soon," and has been for a while now -- it was among the first titles Sony confirmed when it unveiled its re-release plans. But this week's game (assuming there will be only one game) is FantaVision. If there's an order to this stuff, I'm not seeing it yet.

Folks who prefer Ape Escape 2 will be pleased to know that it is also supposedly headed to PS4 (there was a PEGI listing). Shame there aren't more of these games! The world needs more Ape Escape.

A lost look at Rare's scrapped SNES project that eventually became Banjo-Kazooie

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

With the archival nature of Rare Replay -- a collection of games on Xbox One that spans the developer's entire history -- it's natural that the studio would be digging through a lot of old boxes lately. One of those boxes (proverbial or not) yielded a very special find: footage of the evolution of the game that went on to become Banjo-Kazooie.

Through this ten minute video, key staff at Rare describe Dream as it was running on both Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64. Early looks have it using the Donkey Kong Country aesthetic to move through a world from an isometric viewpoint. Later, a canine companion is added in. Just a man with a pirate sword and his dog, off to do some adventuring.

That obviously wouldn't last. As the game grew, it also got too ambitious. Rare realized it couldn't pull off this giant pirate-styled role-playing game. The team reverted to a more signature cartooney look and created Banjo (who was originally concepted as a rabbit) to traverse linear 2D-like levels, not unlike, again, Donkey Kong Country.

Seeing Nintendo's work on Super Mario 64 prompted Rare to once more scrap its work on the game. Itching to make something on par with the iconic N64 title, Rare created a fully 3D test level for what would become Banjo-Kazooie. The rest is history. It was a long process, but few would probably argue that the developer didn't eventually get it right in the end.

The Steam Winter Sale just started, thousands of games discounted

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

You, statistically speaking, are probably a person with a backlog of PC games so overwhelming that you'll never be caught up. Steam, fiscally speaking, is a service with a vested interest in selling you more PC games that, again, you'll probably never complete.

The siren song grows louder today as Steam just kicked off its annual winter sale. Thousands of games are discounted through January 4, 2016. The format doesn't appear to be laid out exactly how it has in the past. Rather than clearly defined daily deals, there are some "highlighted" ones (many on entire franchises) and a long-scrolling list of additional discounts.

Some of those highlights right now are Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ($40.19), Telltale's Game of Thrones ($10.19), and The Witcher 3 ($29.99). Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg; the rest of the games can be viewed here.

The Steam storefront is going through its usual wonky post-launch paces, so all of that's subject to change -- if it does, it'll likely get cheaper. And, the cheaper it gets, the more tempted you get. Statistics always win.

Funko Freddy Fazbear Figures Set For Release

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 04:14 AM PST

We'll be seeing a whole lot more of Freddy Fazbear and friends in the early months of 2016. Funko toys has announced its new line of Five Nights at Freddy's branded merchandise (actual merchandise based off of an imaginary franchise, how postmodern!)

The announcement promises a wide range of collectibles, including plushies, action figures, vinyl figures, and the always popular Mystery Mini blind boxes so you can spend all your money chasing down the last figure you need to complete your collection. Funko, in its never-ending campaign to assimilate and re-sell all geek and gamer culture, plans to spread out the release of the goods, starting in March 2016 for their Pop! Pen Toppers which feature the heads of the main characters (and questionably...the cupcake). April will see the release of keychains that feature Foxy, Bonnie, Freddy, Chica, and a dubious looking Springtrap. The rest of the teased merchandise is set for release in May.

While it's a little disappointing that Funko couldn't have gotten this together for Christmas, I'm sure the series' fans are excited to see it happening at all. While some people criticize the franchise for it's jump scare obsessed gameplay and repetition, many fans say that they stay with the games for the lore and the characters. It seems like branching out into novels and figures might be the right direction for Freddy and his pals, because that last game did not do the trick.

Destructoid's award for Best PC Game of 2015 goes to...

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

This quirky, JRPG-inspired lovefest has been the unexpected smash hit of 2015, resonating strongly with a legion of fans that helped propel it to victory in a large "Best. Game. Ever." poll against some of the indelible classics of the medium, not to mention the 10/10 Ben Davis awarded it here at Destructoid. The people who like Undertale really gosh darn like it.

The game even made an unexpected star turn on the Christian television program 700 Club thanks to a concerned mother who didn't like the "demonic" skeleton in a hoodie she saw on her kid's phone. And while the host urged against the "brutality and violence" of games, we can appreciate the irony of making that sweeping statement about the rare JRPG that actually encourages complete non-violence.

I'm sure developer Toby Fox, whose sense of humor colors Undertale's beloved characters, appreciated the joke. Here's the excerpt from our review he chose to display on the game's Steam page: "The puzzles aren't particularly impressive."

I could spend all day watching Sam Lake doing Sam Lake stuff

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

I guess the sticking point from this here video is that Remedy's working on putting an Alan Wake easter egg in Quantum Break. A responsible writer would've focused on that, maybe crafted an SEO-friendly headline, came up with something generally coherent and relevant to games.

Fuck that.

Look at Sam Lake pretend to be in the FBI! Look at him drink that coffee! Listen to him carefully recite lines from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town!" This man is a goddamn national treasure and I don't even care that he's from one of those almost-Scandinavian countries and not the United States. Sam, your altruistic resolution for 2016 is to do more stuff in videos and then to post those videos on the Internet.

That Dragon, Cancer is releasing January 2016

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

Around two years ago at the Develop conference in Brighton, I played a short demo for an indie game called That Dragon, Cancer. Sat by myself with a set of headphones on, I slowly explored the hospital room of a father and his young son. His young son was dying, and the father felt powerless.

The demo, while short, was incredibly powerful and put the game on my most anticipated upcoming releases calendar. Development has seemingly been tough, as one of the developers is the father the game is about and his son passed away during development, but we're finally several years later approaching launch for the game.

That Dragon, Cancer is going to be releasing January 12, 2016 on Steam, Humble, and Ouya for $14.99.

I have no idea how this game is going to turn out, but what I experienced a few years ago was incredibly moving. I'm eagerly awaiting being able to get my hands on it, before setting aside an afternoon to cry at my computer screen.

What did you think of Batman: Arkham Knight's Season Pass?

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

Batman: Arkham Knight's Season Pass just kept getting worse and worse. Outside of the okay Batgirl DLC, there was a series of useless costumes, Batmobile skins, and really, really bad mission packs (Harley Quinn, Red Hood, Robin and Catwoman).

Sure there's still a challenge pack that's coming in January, but for all intents and purposes, the pass is done today with Season of Infamy, the last real DLC. If big bags of money have anything to say about it WB isn't done with this franchise just yet, and I assume that if its next big superhero series doesn't do well, it can always go back to good ol' Bruce.

But enough talk about how disappointing the newest Arkham iteration was -- what did you think of the $40 Season Pass?

Nintendo wins Mii-related lawsuit

Posted: 22 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

Over the years, many people have sued Nintendo for a whole host of reasons. They've been sued over the Wii's motion technology (and won the same case again in appeals court), the clocks in the DSi and 3DS, the Wii's motion technology (again), the 3DS' glasses-free 3D, and even Donkey Kong's name. Most of the time, these motions are just patent trolls looking for a quick buck. This is one of those times.

RecogniCorp, a company with a name that evokes the bad guys from mid-period Stallone vehicles, sued Nintendo over the technology behind the Mii. Since the lawsuit was filed in 2011, and RecogniCorp's patent mostly deals with "storing police sketch-artist data," it's likely the lawsuit took issue with Nintendo's face-scanning tech.

As of yesterday, Nintendo has officially won their lawsuit with RecogniCorp. It's possible the suit will end up in appeals court, but I can't imagine it will gain any traction. "We are very pleased with Judge Jones’ decision, which finally put an end to RecogniCorp’s attempt to cover inventions to which it has no rights," Ajay Singh, Nintendo's director of litigation and compliance wrote in a press release.

If I said the phrase "Nihon Falcom," most people wouldn't bat an eye unless they were a devout JRPG fan. Bringing up its most storied franchise, Ys, however, is a different story.

Falcom has been working under the radar outside of Japan for over three decades now, which includes the series The Legend of Heroes. Thanks to XSEED we're going to be seeing a lot more of it, starting with Trails of Cold Steel.

Here's lots and lots of spoiler-filled Attack on Titan screenshots

Posted: 21 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

Koei Tecmo has released a whole shedload of new screenshots for its upcoming Attack on Titan game. They show off some new playable characters, as well as some more uh… spoilery things.

If you don’t want spoilers, just take it from me that the screenshots look impressive but, unfortunately, don’t really show much gameplay. You’re not missing anything by not looking.

Spoilers for the entire Attack on Titan anime are coming up. You have been warned.

Most of the screenshots revolve around the second half of the anime, with a major focus on the Female Titan arc. It appears that both the initial encounter with the Female Titan in the Forest of Giant Trees and the final fight between her and Eren's Titan in Stohess District will be playable.

Some new characters can also be seen, such as the Survey Corps’ Erwin Smith and Mike Zacharius. Some more obscure characters will also be available, such as the Military Police members Marlo Freudenberg, Hitch Dreyse and Nile Dok, who appeared for a couple of episodes before never being seen again.

The big thing here (heh) is that you’ll be able to play as Eren’s Titan form, with his own abilities such as destroying buildings and punching smaller Titans away. It’s not currently confirmed as to whether any others, such as the Female or Armoured Titans, will also be playable. Hopefully they are because I’d love to mow down some baddies as the Armoured Titan.

You can view all of the screenshots in the gallery below. The one thing that surprised me was just how closely they seem to be following the anime. Koei Tecmo isn't afraid of playing with their source material, as can be seen by Dragon Quest Heroes, but plenty of these screenshots are almost perfect recreations of scenes in the anime.

Still, I’m looking forward to this. I love Attack on Titan, and the ability to replay certain battles in it sounds absolutely amazing to me.

Attack on Titan launches February 18 in Japan for PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, while Western release dates haven’t been announced just yet.

The creator of Metal Gear Solid V's Fox Engine lands a new job at Bandai Namco

Posted: 21 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST

Back in September, Konami’s worldwide technology director Julien Merceron left the company after their reported shift away from AAA development (which no longer appears to be the case). He was the lead architect on Metal Gear Solid V’s mighty impressive Fox Engine, so for him to jump ship so soon after the game’s launch was somewhat of a surprise.

Fortunately, it’s been announced that Merceron will be joining Bandai Namco, to do pretty much exactly the same as what he did at Konami. According to the company, Merceron will be developing “core technology for contents and production pipelines for various platforms.” I think that’s the corporate way of saying “he’s making engines.”

Talking about his new position, Merceron said:

I'm extremely excited to be given an opportunity to make a difference within the amazing Bandai Namco Group, so well-known for its iconic IPs… I'm looking forward to empower the teams I'll be working with and accelerate growth, innovation and creativity. The reach of this group goes well beyond games, it is a true Multimedia and Entertainment Group, so I know I will learn a lot too! Working with so many experienced people and friends and focusing on a wider range of entertainment forms is the chance of a lifetime!

What he’s working on at the moment hasn’t yet been announced. Considering he managed to make something as gorgeous as the Fox Engine at Konami, I’m pretty interested to see what he can do at a more stable company like Bandai Namco.

It’s also nice to hear that more people who were involved with Metal Gear Solid V than just Kojima are landing on their feet after having to deal with Konami’s bullshit.
