Heart Forth, Alicia is really coming along Posted: 30 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST The latest Kickstarter update for Heart Forth, Alicia is a lot to get through. There's been a delay -- from Q1 2016 to the second half of the year -- but rather than just give a basic explanation for the change of plans, the developers have shared a detailed end-of-year summary. Much has changed for the metroidvania RPG since its crowdfunding drive ended. There's a new aspect ratio, for one. And the introduction, originally created by a single developer, has been revamped. "The first chapter of the game is now more action-oriented, has a bunch of memorable imagery, and is by far much more dramatic than its previous iteration," reads the post. There are also some new mechanics. Alicia can swap between spells on the fly and carry items (or chuck them at unassuming slimes). NPCs will tag along. Cutscenes are said to now be more "dynamic," while the story in general has become "more engaging, exciting, and concise."
Platinum is doing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles next Posted: 30 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST Australia's classification board has a listing for a multiplatform game called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan and, hot damn, it's developed by Platinum Games. Question is, will its scope fall more in line with The Legend of Korra or Transformers: Devastation? This game will also be published by Activision, according to the listing. And with all of the different forms TMNT has taken over the years, you have to wonder what the art direction be here. Platinum has taken on a good deal of work in recent memory. Next year alone, the studio will have Star Fox Zero for Nintendo, Scalebound for Microsoft, and Nier: Automata for Square Enix. [Via All Games Beta]
Posted: 30 Nov 2015 10:01 AM PST While driving down the New Jersey parkway for Thanksgiving, I began to notice a lot of water and radio towers perched high above the trees. "Wow, I could easily blow them up or tether them to the ground and bring them down," I thought. That's when I realized that Just Cause 3 had taken over me and my way of thinking. For a game that's essentially "Explosion: The Video Game," it's consumed a lot of my brain. I'm sure many of you hopped in to the series, like I did, after seeing what was possible with Just Cause 2's grappling mechanic. Well, let's just say that the sequel takes that mechanic, as well as just about every other, to a whole new level.
Cyber Monday deals for Wii U and New 3DS XL Posted: 30 Nov 2015 09:45 AM PST We stretched our robot eyes as far as the nanolayer allowed, but there just weren't as many Nintendo Cyber Monday deals this year compared to years past. (Or maybe they've always been a slight letdown.) On the Wii U side, the excellent Deluxe Set with Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon all but sold out at major retailers at the $249.99 price point. So if you're looking for that bargain, you should've set an alarm on Wednesday last week. (Yes, really.) But there are still a few Wii U bundle deals remaining, including a $225 deal from Toys R Us through Rakuten, plus a nice Mario Maker bundle over at Walmart (albeit at the full $299.99 tag). For the New Nintendo 3DS XL, the only retailer with a noteworthy discount still remaining is Walmart. It's currently offering a $199 deal for a New 3DS XL plus your choice of game. If you don't want a game, you can get red or black units of the New 3DS XL for $179. For those who don't want the large XL, the only viable deal for the New 3DS (non-XL) is the $178 Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer Bundle. Lovely name. Finally, over at Best Buy, there's a buy one, get one 50% off sales on 3DS games. 31 titles are available in the promotion, and GCU's 20% off will stack.
Star Wars Battlefront's Jakku DLC looks like a good start Posted: 30 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST The first wave of free Star Wars Battlefront DLC debuts tomorrow for players who pre-ordered the game, while everyone else can get it a week later on December 8. As we've heard a few times now, the Battle of Jakku is made up of two new maps and a 20 vs. 20 mode, Turning Point, that has Rebel forces capturing control points to push back the Empire. That's the idea, anyway! In practice, I suspect it will look like this trailer: lots of quick death by explosion.
| It's burgers vs. pizza in the newest Splatoon Splatfest Posted: 30 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST I love the forced extremes of the Splatoon Splatfests -- it's one or the other. In this case, it's a no-brainer choosing pizza over hamburgers. I mean, what culture doesn't love pizza? It utterly surprised me during my first visit to Japan that Tokyo was packed to the gills with pizza parlors, and they were actually good! If you're interested in participating, the event starts on December 4 at 9PM PT, where it will carry on for 24 hours. It's great to see the game still getting new content and support like this -- hell, Nintendo is doing better supporting its first ever online shooter of this scale than Bungie is doing for Destiny. | The Goon needs a video game, and so do these comics, too! Posted: 30 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST I’m not a fan of “The Capes” when it comes to comic books, but I understand why they’re such an easy fit for video games. Superheroes are proactive investigators and brawlers with adventures based solely around their exploits. Their worlds are ready made, their rogues galleries are fully fleshed out, and their main goal is to excite the audience with thrills and spills. So, for years it was pretty disheartening to know the comics I adored couldn’t get a foothold in the gaming industry, despite having the potential. It’s only until recently that, thanks to the success of The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, the door opened a little for the leftfield titles. Granted, The Wolf Among Us worked because Bigby’s role as Fabletown’s sheriff was the perfect piggyback into his world -- investigators are an adventure gaming staple, allowing the audience play detective, solve puzzles woven into the narrative, and uncover mysteries -- but the fact Fables even had a game, quite late into its run, still knocks me for six. More importantly, it gives me hope. Sure, not all cult comics need a video game. Just because you could, it doesn't mean you should (ask Blue Estate and Watchmen). But there are certain titles that could easily make that successful transition with the right developer. Maybe even expose them to a new audience, which is sort of why comics go for such licensing in the first place. Anyway, without further ado, here are some comics I’d like to see get a virtual spin-off. You know, because that’s what video game writers like to do when they’ve got a deadline to fulfil and their new workplace hampers that. Lists and shit, yeah?! |
This Sony Santa Monica game tease is a head-scratcher Posted: 30 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST SCE Santa Monica Studio has contributed to a varied bunch of games, including multiple God of War titles, Hohokum, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and Journey. What's next? Whatever the hell is happening in this teaser clip. After claiming the news internally, I got a message from Kyle. "What are you writing about that shoe, Jordan?" I don't know, Kyle. I don't know. Do we even know that it is a shoe? There will be ten "world premieres" during The Game Awards on Thursday, and this project could reasonably be among them. Otherwise, PlayStation Experience is this weekend.
The Arkham Origins developer is working on two new DC Comics games Posted: 30 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST WB Montreal, the developer most well-known for 2013's Batman: Arkham Origins, looks like it's again focusing on comics for its second big project. And its third too, actually. A call for a fair number of new employees outed the studio's intentions. As found by IGN, WB Montreal is hiring for two new triple-A titles set in the DC Comics universe. There seem to be 11 open positions, but WB could be hiring for several of each title. The openings are for the likes of artists, programmers, and animators. Obviously, WB hasn't chimed in and confirmed any new games yet. That means that details are scarce and speculation is rampant. A Suicide Squad title seems likely given that a new movie is coming out next year. Superman's also a fair guess. And, even though Rocksteady's done making Arkham titles, it doesn't mean that WB will be content to give up on the franchise. Jobs [WB Games Montreal via IGN]
Bandai Namco is cooking up Tap My Katamari Posted: 30 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST Katamari Damacy has such a strong hook and delightfully offbeat vibe, it's hard to imagine I'll ever grow tired of the series. It's been a few years, now. We're due for another installment. If a recent trademark and domain are anything to go on, it would seem Bandai Namco agrees. A recent filing in Europe points to something called "Tap My Katamari," as does a website, tapmykatamari.com, held by the company. As much as I would prefer a controller-based game, I wouldn't be inherently opposed to a touch-screen title (assuming that's what this is). At worst, we now have the phrase "Tap my Katamari" at our disposal. Use it well, friends. [Via NeoGAF]
Dtoid Designs: The five best Un-Mario levels Posted: 30 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST This month for the second Dtoid Designs contest, I challenged you to use Super Mario Maker to create the Un-Mario level. How exactly does one create a level that doesn't play like it comes from a Super Mario game using only Super Mario assets? Many people attempted, but only a few scored high enough to be featured here. Take a look at the best levels submitted to the Dtoid Designs Un-Mario Challenge!
The Konami Code is the key to unlocking Amazon's Cyber Monday deals Posted: 30 Nov 2015 05:45 AM PST The Konami Code has had a ton of in-game applications, but today it can save you some actual real-life money. Amazon has centered its Cyber Monday video game deals around the legendary cheat, making it instantly good for 15 percent off a bunch of titles. The way it works is that you have to enter the code at the checkout screen, meaning that you won't see the savings before adding it to your cart. Once there, type "UUDDLRLR" and apply the discount. No "BA Start" is necessary, which, as everyone knows, is the end to the Konami Code. The 15 percent can be used on somewhere around 80 new games and pre-orders. We've listed a bunch of them below. That list isn't exhaustive, though; those are just the ones we could find. Apart from the Konami Code event, Amazon has a hangover of sorts from its Black Friday offerings. A lot of it is the same as we saw last week, meaning that they'll probably end sometime soon. There are a few new things sprinkled in too, like the PS4 20th anniversary controller that headlined our gift guide for PlayStation fans.
Cyber Monday Xbox One bundle deals and 50% off games Posted: 30 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST If you're curious what Microsoft Store is offering up for Cyber Monday, prepare to be un-surprised -- the deals are essentially the same as they were on Black Friday. If you were too busy or overwhelmed at the time, you might have missed key deals on Xbox One games, including up to 50% off select titles, plus the addition of $10 gift code stacking on some titles. It's a decent deal if you're looking to bulk up your library. Over at Target, there's a crazy site-wide 15% off coupon, and while the code won't work on consoles, it does discount most Xbox One games and titles for other platforms. For the console bundles, Microsoft Store provides the same "free $60 gift code + selection of a free game" that it offered on Black Friday. Unfortunately, the selection of available titles has shrunk to three, as Forza Horizon 2 is no longer available. The new 1TB Rise of the Tomb Raider bundle is also sold out. At Walmart, you can snag its exclusive white Gears of War bundle with a free generic controller for $299.
| This concept art is making me wish Eight Days was never canceled Posted: 30 Nov 2015 05:05 AM PST Eight Days was a pretty ambitious project. So ambitious that Sony canceled it in 2008 after debuting it in 2006. The gist was that it was going to be the biggest open world game of that era, set across eight different US states and a clock based on real time, with two distinct storylines. While it could have been another generic sandbox title, this new set of concept art -- which has recently surfaced online by way of artist Benoit Godde -- looks pretty killer. | Lost Reavers is being developed by a younger core staff Posted: 30 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST It's still unknown whether or not the Wii U's Lost Reavers will sport a fair free-to-play scheme, but for now, it's looking interesting enough for me to keep following it. Speaking to Famitsu, producer Katsuhiro Harada (famed Tekken developer) noted that the team consists of people in their 20s and 30s, so that they could get some grounded experience before they were dropped into a major AAA title. The game will also be loot-based, encouraging players to constantly fight bosses to obtain better equipment. Weapons include katanas, assault rifles, bazookas, and shotguns, and skill trees are confirmed, as well as a "workshop" to power-up weapons. A protection-based mechanic is also in, as you'll have to defend your co-op partners while they're particularly vulnerable, like carrying treasure. Sounds interesting. | The 'last' Naruto game just got a demo in Japan Posted: 30 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST It's hard to believe that Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 isn't out yet -- I could have sworn it was set to come out months ago. It's actually going to arrive in February worldwide following a delay, and for now, you can ogle at the newest trailer. For reference, this is said to be the last game in the series, now that the Shippuden storyline has concluded. Of course, there is always more money to be made at some point. If you happen to reside in Japan (or have a Japanese PSN account), you can pick up the demo now on PS4. |
Posted: 30 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST I've been playing rhythm games since they exploded onto the scene with PaRappa the Rapper in 1997, and having nearly played at least one title of every rhythm game series released I can easily say Superbeat: Xonic is top tier. But be forewarned, this is the Dark Souls...nay...the 127 Hours of music games, only you get to keep your arms attached. SUPERBEAT: XONiC
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X will arrive in March in Japan Posted: 30 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST The Hatsune Miku machine isn't stopping anytime soon. Sega has just announced that Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X will arrive on March 24, 2016 in Japan, exclusively for the Vita. An Aime card (arcade transfer accessory) is included as a pre-order bonus, and you can also buy a Vita pouch for 3,480 yen at launch. After the Vita launch, the game is set to debut on the PS4 in the fall. Project Diva X [Sega via Siliconera]
Video Review: Xenoblade Chronicles X Posted: 30 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST Xenoblade Chronicles X is certainly one of those games that you probably have to see to believe, rather than simply just taking some stranger's word for it. The written review just doesn't do it enough justice in my humble opinion -- we need more than just the text, we need visuals, audio, smell... uh, forget the latter. With this in mind, I've taken the liberty to make a nice pretty little video version of Chris' review so you can show every one of your friends and family the next time you're all stuck in the basement of your shitty uncle's shittier house for five days after your apartment's power goes out.
New Mighty No. 9 trailer showcases additional modes Posted: 30 Nov 2015 02:37 AM PST Mighty No. 9 is going for that "kooky weird Saturday morning cartoon" vibe with this new trailer, meant to showcase some of the game's new modes, and that ever-popular brand™ building Minecraft pre-order bonus skin. Since it hit all of its stretch goals, it'll ship with a ton of new modes, including boss rush, challenge mode, one-hit death, and online co-op challenges. As long as the final game is anything like the build that's been playable for months now, it'll end up okay, but it will probably never escape the drama to some degree.
This Hearthstone combo kills both players instantly Posted: 30 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST Hearthstone's Auchenai Soulpriest is up to his old tricks again. As most Priest players know, this card swaps healing powers for damage, setting up some devastating combos if used on the enemy. But in the case of this week's Tavern Brawl (The Battle of Tol Barad), it's particularly devious. In essence, players who use a 9-cost card will get the spell Tree of Life, which returns both combatants to full health. Except, the Soulpriest instantly kills everyone. For extra fun in a real game, you can use the Reno card (found in the newest expansion) to instantly kill yourself. See it for yourself in action on Nick Robinson's YouTube channel.
Mario Kart 8 is getting a TV special on Disney XD this week Posted: 30 Nov 2015 02:05 AM PST Mario Kart 8 came in with a bang, and ended up lasting quite a while with its two amazing DLC packs. While I still play it on occasion, its fire has unfortunately died down a bit, partially due to the horrible battle mode that still hasn't been patched or addressed. When it comes to my household, I know for a fact that a real battle gametype would keep people interested for longer. Alas, over a year after launch, Nintendo has announced a brand new TV special for the game, which will air on December 5 at 8PM ET on Disney XD. It features YouTube personalities and "eight of America's best young gamers," whatever that last bit means.
Obsidian's team had full access to the South Park archives for The Stick of Truth Posted: 30 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST South Park: The Stick of Truth was a pretty ambitious project -- so much so that I didn't think it would ever actually come out. But when it did, it blew my expectations away, and Obsidian had another hit on its hands. Cut content includes giant underground kingdoms for Crab People and the Underpants Gnomes, as well as a Christmas village for Mr. Hankey. You can probably see some of the other influences plainly like EarthBound's impact on a kid's grand adventure, and even Zelda's Link (silent protagonist).
Review: Xenoblade Chronicles X Posted: 30 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST When Xenoblade Chronicles was announced for localization on the Wii, my heart skipped a beat. While there are plenty of JRPGs to go around, the more the merrier, and I wouldn't pass up the chance to experience another Monolith Soft game. I didn't quite have the same reaction to Xenoblade Chronicles X at first, but it really grew on me over time.
Where is our review for Rainbow Six: Siege? Posted: 30 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST After a beta snafu, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is set to launch tomorrow on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms. So where is our review? Well, we declined Ubisoft's review event as per our policy, so we'll be getting our retail copy today. Servers will be online and I'll be able to test out the game in some capacity, but I won't really be able to really dig in until midnight. Once I've reached an adequate playtime, I'll provide a full review.
Research group says millennials prefer PlayStation Posted: 29 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST Shopping research group InfoScout has published its post-Black Friday findings as they relate to video game consoles. As you can see in the chart below, 40% of participating millennials (defined as ages 18-35) buy PlayStation products on your "average day" in October, compared to 48% on Black Friday. Compare this to "middle-aged" consumers (defined as ages 35-55, hi Mom!), who preferred Xbox products both during Black Friday and your "average day."
Breaking Benjamin frontman hates Star Wars Battlefront Posted: 29 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST Within the first thirty seconds of the video linked below, Breaking Benjamin founder Benjamin Burnley admits to punching his Xbox One to the point where there is damage visible on the console. This comes on the heels of a much-publicized Instagram post from Burnley, where the rock musician smashed a Star Wars Battlefront disc in anger in a social media ad deal gone awry. "They tried to basically say 'We would like to have you post on your social media about how much you enjoy the game' and I'll leave it at that. And I said 'Sure, if I like it,' which I don't. Because it fucking sucks. The gameplay sucks," Burnley said in an interview with radio station WCYY 94.3. He then goes on to explain that Star Wars Battlefront is a terrible game because enemies can spawn either behind you or in front of you. Plus, it's bad when Darth Vader shows up in the Star Wars game. Burnley is also wearing Darth Vader shoes. That's how you know he's a fan. It seems like Burnley doesn't much care for online shooters, which is ordinarily a fine stance to take. "All online games suck, in their own kind of way," Burnley said. "Cause you're relying on the Internet, which isn't where it needs to be. Online games are a little too ambitious for what the Internet can handle. But some of 'em definitely suck way more than others." I'm not sure how poor broadband infrastructure relates to an online shooter that anecdotally works as advertised, but I am also not rich enough to joke about how much I punch my expensive video game console. However, if you're a fan of willfully misinterpreting the words of others, you could take that to mean "Call of Duty is ambitious" which is what I am choosing to do. Put that on the back of your box, Activision.
Not everyone is giving peace a chance in Metal Gear Solid V's race to disarmament Posted: 29 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST Konami is keeping us updated following its call to disarm all nuclear weapons on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. As at November 29, Xbox 360 is leading the charge with just 35 nukes remaining, with big brother Xbox One hot on its heels with 52. PlayStation consoles started with more but have also made good gains with the PlayStation 3 and 4 dropping to 140 and 188 respectively. Steam nukes have dropped to 11,473.
Like killing off your own team members in Rainbow Six Siege? Ubisoft has plans for you Posted: 29 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST Ubisoft will not tolerate players who kill off their own teammates in Rainbow Six Siege. Replying to a fan tweet that asked if there were plans to "to do anything about trolls that kill people on their [own] team," the developer warned that players who have been having a rip-roaring time shooting up their 'buddies' in the beta will be dealt with when the game launches in full tomorrow, December 1, 2015. "We have a plan in place to handle them," Ubisoft said in the tweet. "It will not be tolerated at launch!" Rainbow Six Siege is out tomorrow on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Chivalry developer trademarks Mirage: Arcane Warfare Posted: 29 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST Chivalry: Medieval Warfare was absolutely great. Take a load of shouty knights, make them chuck axes and swing swords at each other in a first person melee-fest, and you’ve got yourself a grand ole time. Plus it gets extra points for having a dedicated warcry button. But since Chivalry, developer Torn Banner has been incredibly quiet about what it's working on. Chivalry launched for PC back in 2012, and all it's really done since then are ports and the Deadliest Warrior expansion, so it had to have been working on something new all this time. At last, we know what it might be. According to a trademark Torn Banner filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, its next title is likely going to be called Mirage: Arcane Warfare. Gee, I wonder what that could be? Chances are Mirage is going to be a more fantasy-focused follow up to Chivalry. Torn Banner has already made clear that historical accuracy isn’t a priority for them, what with Deadliest Warrior pitting Spartans against pirates and all, but magic would be a first for the franchise. My hope is that they take a look at Dark Messiah of Might and Magic for an example on how to make both melee and magic combat fun. I’m incredibly excited to see more of this, seeing as how much I love Chivalry. But for now we don’t know anything about it other than the title, so it’s anyone’s guess exactly what it could be. Here’s hoping Torn Banner shows off what it's made soon!
