| These maniacs actually made the shishkebab from Fallout 4 Posted: 13 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST Fallout's shishkebab might not be the most practical of weapons out there, but it will always score top marks for style. Caleb Kraft from Make, along with Platinmfungi tapped into the spirit of the wasteland and cobbled together a surprisingly functional replica of everyone's favorite ghoul cooker. Jordan tells me you can easily snag one in game at Saugus Ironworks if you want to get in on the burning/stabbing action yourself. Weird, he seems to know exactly where all the really gnarly melee weapons can be found. It's enough to make one worry. |
| Boobie mouse pads included with Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Collector's Edition Posted: 13 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST Sample images of items included with the collector's editions of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 in Japan have been released, and as you could have guessed, they feature young girls wearing next to nothing. |
| MechWarrior Online is coming to Steam in December Posted: 13 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST After what seems like years of rumors and speculation, the free-to-play shooter MechWarrior Online is finally making the move to Steam. According to a news post on the MWO website, the Steam launch will happen on December 10, moving surprisingly quickly after playing coy with the idea for so many years. There is no word yet on what will be involved in the switch from an entirely stand-alone client to being a part of Steam (one assumes there will be a way for existing players to port their accounts over), but PGI is raffling off tickets to a launch party with the dev team at their studio in Vancouver, so there's that. Of course, it wouldn't be MWO without a good amount of drama. While at first blush the idea of moving the game to Steam would seem like a no-brainer (more players, potentially more scrutiny to address bugs, maybe better pricing schemes to compete with other free-to-play titles on the service, etc.), the reaction from the community has been decidedly mixed. Forum posts range from exulting the move as if it were the return of Kerensky himself (don't worry, BattleTech nerds got that reference), to saying it will be the final nail in the coffin for MWO -- for reasons. I'd write the complainers off as cynics, but we all saw what happened to poor old Hawken when it made the switch. Hopefully this won't be a case of a history repeating for mech fans. |
| Indivisible crowdfunding campaign extended Posted: 13 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST It's not over yet. Lab Zero Games has secured a 20-day extension on its Indiegogo campaign for Indivisible, a stylish side-scrolling RPG with shades of Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid. As it now stands, Lab Zero has raised $975,000 of its $1.5 million goal. There are 21 days left. It'll be disappointing if the funding doesn't come through. There are a bunch of things to like about this game, even in just the prototype. I'm most fond of the character designs and animation, myself. Also, this fluffball of a dog named Lanshi: |
| Nintendo removes boob size customization from Xenoblade Chronicles X localizations Posted: 13 Nov 2015 10:15 AM PST The lovely people at GameXplain reported that not only have the swimsuits for the teenage character Lin been changed during the localization of Xenoblade Chronicles X, but a breast size customization slider has also been removed. According to the outlet, the rest of game remains largely unchanged gameplay-wise, and I'd say that is what is important. |
| A better breakdown of the Star Wars Battlefront season pass Posted: 13 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST The season pass for Star Wars Battlefront is $50. We had a basic understanding of what the package entails, and as of today, we have a slightly better idea what to expect. Here's the latest summary from EA:
Having already succumb to Star Wars hysteria and ordered a copy of Battlefront, I'm just going to try to forget about all of this DLC I'll miss out on. Come back to me, blissful ignorance! |
| A bunch of up-close pictures of that sweet Wolf Link amiibo Posted: 13 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST It's Friday and you should all be gearing up for the weekend. I'm not the type who's going to make you think a bunch when it's the non-thinking part of the week. I'm not a monster. So, I just want you to use your eyeballs and look at these 16 pictures of the Wolf Link amiibo. Easy enough, right? Just ogle it; take in its majestic nature. In fact, I'm so committed to you not thinking that I'm not even going to point out the Triforce on the base and how that likely indicates a dedicated Zelda line sometime in the future. Nope, not going down that road. Gallery: A Closer Look at The Badass Wolf Link Amiibo [GameSpot] |
| RollerCoaster Tycoon World pushed to 2016 Posted: 13 Nov 2015 08:15 AM PST The results are in from the RollerCoaster Tycoon World beta, and Atari has decided to delay the game to early 2016. Previously, it was supposed to be out for PC on December 10. With this specific beta, Nvizzio wanted to showcase the coaster builder. "Many core features were deliberately not included," the studio said in a blog post. "Many of you loved the game, some found certain aspects frustrating, and you all had tons of thoughtful suggestions for improvements." As far as improvements go, the plan is to:
I didn't play the beta build, but those sound like worthwhile reasons for a delay. RCTW – Blog #23 – RollerCoaster Tycoon World Releasing in Early 2016 [Official site] |
| PSA: Mewtwo and Animal Crossing amiibo go on sale on Amazon in 15 minutes Posted: 13 Nov 2015 07:45 AM PST Friends, Romans, amiibo-hunters: lend me your ears. The day is upon us for another amiibo release. It's a little bit of Smash Bros. and a lot of Animal Crossing. Mostly cute (like last time) with just a dash of badass. Mewtwo's kind of cute too, I guess. But mostly badass. These figures have been on store shelves all day, but there's no need to deal with people when you can just deal with the non-judgmental glow of your monitor. Through some sort of Internet magic, amiibo are available online too. And, those new ones are going up on Amazon very soon. In just 15 minutes, Amazon's putting up its new amiibo stock one-by-one. Here's how it works: At 2pm Pacific, Mewtwo goes on sale. At 3pm Pacific, Animal Crossing takes over and Mabel's first to bat. 4pm Pacific is the greedy Tom Nook. The day rounds out at 5pm Pacific with a three-pack containing Cyrus, K.K., and Reese. Amazon hasn't said how much stock it has of each amiibo. The recent trend has been that if you show up on time, you'll probably get one with no trouble. If you saunter in four hours later, you might not be as lucky. But, Nintendo's upped its game manufacturing these, so maybe four hours later will be just fine. The same rules are in effect as always. Well, mostly, that is. There's a limit of one of each figure per customer. One-click ordering is turned-on this time. Make sure your address and credit card information is sorted ahead of time. Adding an amiibo to your cart doesn't reserve it; you have to checkout to complete the order. That's all there is to it. We'll be hanging around and updating the post when new amiibo go live. You have 15 minutes until Mewtwo. He's Pyschic so he already knows if he's going to end up at your house. Mewtwo, Mabel, Tom Nook, three-pack [Amazon] |
| Major League Baseball is coming after a Big Papi Fallout 4 mod Posted: 13 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST Fallout 4 takes place in Boston, the home of Major League Baseball team the Red Sawwwx. In fact, the club's stadium, Fenway Park, serves a large role as one of the bigger settlements and markets in the game. One NPC even recruits you to find some signed memorabilia. The ties to America's pastime are great enough that one modder wanted to use the game to celebrate a Boston hometown hero. Richie Branson created a David "Big Papi" Ortiz mod that's available to download. It's basically a large Dominican man running around in a baseball uniform and hitting things with a spiked bat. It's great. Please note that when I say it's great, opinions may vary. Major League Baseball, for instance, does not think it's great. The league told the Boston Globe that it plans to take action. "The use of these marks is an infringement of our rights. We plan to enforce those rights," an MLB spokesperson said in an email. The move isn't surprising from the no-nonsense organization. It's a game steeped in stodgy tradition and insistence on "playing the right way." Of course it's going to nix something that has a bit of crossover appeal to an audience it wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. I mean, what if someone catches a baseball game next season and thinks that Boston named its team after that one guy in that one Fallout 4 mod? The integrity of the game is not something to fuck around with. MLB cries foul over 'Fallout 4' Ortiz jersey [Boston Globe via Deadspin] |
| Amazon has The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers for free Posted: 13 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST Just yesterday, I was reading up on a canceled decades-old Konami fighting game whose character sketches are, uh, better seen than described. What a what-if! The information originated from author John Szczepaniak and his book The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers. As luck would have it, that book is free on Amazon until tomorrow. (You don't need to use a Kindle.) Untold History Vol. 1 is over 500 pages of interviews, photos, and artwork. Given how little I know about the Japanese game development scene in the '80s and '90s, this should quite an educational read. [Thanks, LinkSlayer64] |
| Star Fox and Monster Hunter X are a winning combination Posted: 13 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST There's no real reason for me to get this much enjoyment out of costumes in Monster Hunter, a series I don't even play, and yet here we are once again. The little promo videos are entertaining. Monster Hunter X, which releases in Japan on November 28, also has a Star Fox outfit. So, an animal character wearing another animal character's iconic garb. It's about as great as you'd hope. |
| Friday Night Fights - Ch-ch-ch-chaaaanges Posted: 13 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST Well isn't this Hunky Dory? A nice little Friday. We have a new Call of Duty to play together. We have a new Fallout to play with ourselves (HA! HA!). We have herpes. Wait, that's just me. My bad. "So shut up and tell us what's changing Mike." Is what you are probably saying to yourselves right now. What's changing? Well, the world my friends. Playing games together only on Fridays or the weekend, just isn't working out the way it used to. So how about (starting next week) we take this whole thing weekly? Instead of only signing up for Friday on the blog, put down the day you want to play (next to the time) and voila! Still confused? It's okay. Check the blog on Monday and all will be revealed. |
| Nominees announced for The Game Awards 2015 Posted: 13 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST The Game Awards, the closest thing the video game industry has to film's Academy Awards, is scheduled for December 3. With only three weeks until the event, nominees have been announced for the 22 categories. After the usual categories highlighting genres, there are some near the bottom focused on the community side rather than the development side. Three categories are dedicated to eSports, with two highlighting players and one filled with years-old games (and no mention of Rocket League!). There is also the "Trending Gamer" category, featuring a bunch of YouTubers, and "Best Fan Creation," looking at mods and community projects. Game of the Year nominees include From Software's Bloodborne, Bethesda's Fallout 4, Kojima Production's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Nintendo's Super Mario Maker, and CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The Developer of the Year nominees are redundant, with those five studios making the cut. The full list of nominees is below. |
| A Saint Seiya: Soldier's Soul PC port will be released this month Posted: 13 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST The Bandai Namco trend of porting to PC continues. Saint Seiya: Soldier's Soul is next up on the block, and is slated for a November 27 Steam release in North America. Previously, it was exclusive to the PS3 and PS4 platforms. Speaking to multiple producers at Bandai Namco at the Global Gamer's Day event earlier this year, all of them unanimously stated that the PC platform is constantly growing, and that the publisher has vowed to support it going forward as much as possible. That's good news if you ask me. Saint Seiya [Steam] |
| You'll want to install the Xenoblade Chronicles X data packs before launch Posted: 13 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST Yesterday during its Nintendo Direct event, the publisher let loose upon the world four loading packs for Xenoblade Chronicles X, which isn't even set to launch until early December. So what's the deal? Basically, you can install these four optional data packs to make the game look better, and run faster. Having played Chronicles with and without the packs, I'd say the difference is noticeable. Note though that the game isn't exactly unplayable without them, as these downloads merely bring them up to more current standards. So why are there packs at all? Well, Monolith Soft allegedly packed the disc so tight, that it couldn't fit everything -- hence these optimizations. It's an offputting strategy for those of you who have smaller HHDs, since all told they will take up 10GB of space on their own, eliminating part of the convenience of having the disc in the first place -- if you want the game to run at its full potential. If you're buying it digitally, the packs are built in. I suggest installing them now regardless of your choice of media, as they took hours to download on my end. Also, the "core" pack is not optional, and must be installed for the other three to function. Get a full look at the descriptions below, and locate them directly on the eShop under "downloadable content" for Chronicles. As for the game itself, I am enjoying it early on, even without the option to pilot Skells yet. Expect our full review on November 30. |
| Figuring out which of the usual suspects I'll play in Fallout 4 Posted: 13 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST I never walk into a character creation screen alone. Every time I start a new RPG where you have to brew up a character to spend the next 30-80 hours with, I bring a few familiar faces with me. A small cast of characters I’ve remade again and again as everything from spacefaring psychic demigods, to mangy vampires skulking around the backstreets of L.A., to members of an up-and-coming band. They’re my familiar crew, the usual suspects, and while I try and figure out who is going to be the first to explore the irradiated ruins of Boston in Fallout 4, I also have to wonder -- am I the only one who does this? |
| Bethesda shipped a whole lot of copies of Fallout 4 Posted: 13 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST There was never any doubt that Fallout 4 would sell well, but we never had any numbers from Bethesda to gauge its expectations. The publisher just announced how many units it shipped for the game's launch; judging by those, confidence was running rampant as Bethesda anticipated Fallout 4 would sell very well. In a press release, Bethesda says that it shipped approximately 12 million copies of Fallout 4 to meet day one demand. That initial stock represents sales totaling more than $750 million. Presumably, that dollar figure is an estimate based on the unlikely scenario that every single one of the 12 million units sold. Bethesda also neglected to say whether digital downloads were included in the lofty number of copies shipped, or if it only represents physical units. While it's unclear exactly how many sales that adds up to, it's enough for Bethesda to have already sent out another shipment of games to retailers. Restocks of Fallout 4 were expected, but the highly-coveted Pip-Boy Edition won't be coming back to store shelves. It was said that the post-E3 press conference rush to pre-order the novelty wrist apparatus resulted in it becoming the fastest selling collector's edition of any game in history. That's not the only record Fallout 4 broke. Aside from it holding the mantle of most concurrent players on Steam of a non-Valve game, it also had the most viewed game launch on Twitch this year. A lot of people are interested in the tales from the Wasteland, and that has resulted in a lot of money for Bethesda. |
| Posted: 13 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST That's all she wrote for Imageepoch. The developer responsible for the Luminos Arc series and Arc Rise Fantasia filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, and it seems like they're out of the industry entirely with the launch of Stella Glow -- even Atlus recently referred to it as their "final game." It makes sense then, that they went back to their roots, even if Glow doesn't check all the right boxes. |
| Smite developer's Paladins gets a Founder's Pack, beta date Posted: 13 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST Paladins: Champions of the Realm is a thing that exists, and is the newest first-person team shooter project from the folks over at Hi-Rez who created the controversial Tribes Ascend and Smite. While there hasn't been a whole lot of buzz for it yet people will get a chance to check it out very soon, as the beta is scheduled for November 17. They've also announced a Founder's Pack for $20.00, which nets you immediate beta access, an exclusive mount, and 15 "Card Chests," which seem to be the microtransaction element in the game. In fact, cards will be used to build out your loadout -- let's see if Hi-Rez can avoid the "pay-to-win" model. Register for Beta [Paladins] |
| Watch Firion smack up Lightning in this Dissidia Final Fantasy vignette Posted: 13 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST I think one of my favorite pastimes, as I've come to realize over the years, is watching character-specific trailers for fighting games and brawlers. It may seem excessive for those of you who don't partake in these genres, to have a video for every single combatant, but I enjoy taking in the nuances and planning my roster on paper before a game launches. That's basically what I'm doing for Dissidia Final Fantasy's Arcade edition, in the off-chance that I get to play it at a location test. The newest trailer showcases Firion, the lead of Final Fantasy II, and it doesn't dissapoint, showcasing a tunnel-based level that looks like it's from XIII -- you also get to see him smack Lightning around a little, which is a bonus for me. |
| Review: Sword Art Online: Lost Song Posted: 13 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST Ask most folks who watched the Sword Art Online anime series, and they'll likely tell you that the show's weaker moments usually coincided with events set in ALfheim Online (ALO), a fairy-themed virtual reality MMO that protagonist Kirito and his friends move to after the titular Sword Art Online game is shut down. That sentiment's generally held true throughout both of the anime's seasons so far, marking ALO as a curse of sorts for the franchise's narrative integrity. This puts Sword Art Online: Lost Song in a bit of a pickle since the whole damn thing is set exclusively within ALO. Can Sword Art Online's second game outing survive the bad omens and prove itself where its cousins in print and on TV stumbled? |
| New Destiny update features sword vendor, return of Iron Banner Posted: 13 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST In addition to the refer-a-friend program, a few other updates are coming next week for Destiny. For starters Lord Shaxx will sell the three legendary swords, just in case you did something with them. Also, players will be able to buy weapon parts from the Gunsmith finally, and the Quiver glitch will be fixed for Hunters, enabling the talent again. Iron Banner will be returning, and hopefully it won't be as broken as last time. It will switch to Clash, and reputation gains are increased by 20%, more packages can be obtained, and the rewards are said to be better as a whole. We'll see. In all, a lot of people I play with have moved on from the game and into other shooters -- I typically only log in on Tuesdays to do the hard mode Oryx raid. I wonder what Bungie has up its sleeve to keep people interested down the road, because it doesn't look like we're getting anything in December outside of some class re-balancing, and those raid challenges still haven't hit yet. | Over 400 Rock Band songs are still missing in Europe on PS4 Posted: 12 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST If you're a PS4 owning Rock Band 4 player in Europe, there's a good change you've noticed that a chunk of your old library of PS3 Rock Band tracks don't seem to be playable on Rock Band 4 yet. You're probably not alone in this, as Harmoix has acknowledged that 431 tracks, all playable in North America, just don't work properly in Europe. According to Eric Pope from the studio, they knew this was a problem when the game launched but expected to have it fixed much closer to launch.
Apparently most of these tracks are going to get fixed with a single update to the game, but there was no solid date given for when this update would come. Apparently Harmonix want the update out in "early December", but they have not committed to a specific date. So, are you feeling left out by Rock Band 4? |
| FAST Racing Neo looks like a new F-Zero game for Wii U Posted: 12 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST As part of yesterday's new Nintendo Direct presentation, Wii U owners around the world were treated to a new trailer for FAST Racing Neo. Now, where have I seen this style of game before? What possible game, much demanded by Wii U owners, could this game be reminding me of? No, sorry, I just can't put my finger on it. FAST Racing Neo will apparently be coming to the Wii U eShop in Europe next month. |
| Xbox mullers Tomb Raider fans in London for publicity Posted: 12 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST Microsoft celebrated the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider by challenging eight Lara Croft fans to survive 24 hours on a billboard while being mullered by brutal weather conditions. Of the thousands of applicants, just eight were selected to feature in the 'Survival of the Grittiest' challenge, which saw the contestants strung up on the billboard in London, UK, and then pummelled with snow, icy winds, wild snowstorms and sudden, intense heat. |
| Refer a friend to Destiny and get a reward Posted: 12 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST As a thank you for recruiting new Guardians this holiday season, Bungie will be rewarding players with a new Refer-a-Friend scheme for Destiny. "After this update is deployed, some of the more tech savvy among you will be able to dig up some details for a new initiative we have planned to arrive just in time for the holiday season," writes community manager, Cozmo, in this week's weekly update. "We’re planning something new to recognize and reward the Sherpas among you. We are calling it Refer-a-Friend. |
| Battlefield 4 is getting some new free DLC at the end of this year Posted: 12 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST EA announced a new bit of free DLC for 2013’s Battlefield 4, called Legacy Operations. The DLC was shaped by a community vote that took place almost a year ago, where Battlefield 4 fans were asked which map they’d like to see return the most, and the winning vote was the popular Battlefield 2 map Dragon Valley. Dragon Valley 2015 includes plenty of space for vehicular combat, lots of destructible structures, and includes some gameplay tweaks from the Battlefield 2 version. The trailer, which you can watch up top, makes the map look absolutely massive, so expect this to be a popular new addition. Legacy Operations will be releasing on Xbox One, PS4, and PC alongside the Holiday Update at the end of the year. At the moment, Dragon Valley is the only thing announced for it, however EA has said it will be talking about the DLC more in the coming weeks so it might not be the only thing included. Unfortunately, it won’t be coming to last-gen platforms. EA claims this is due to the sheer size of the map. Just to reiterate because it’s incredible: EA, voted the worst company in the US for multiple years, has released free DLC based on a community vote for a game that came out two years ago. Good job, EA. Well bloody done. EA has announced that a new bit of free DLC will be coming to 2013’s Battlefield 4, called Legacy Operations. | Overkill made the Payday 2 microtransactions worse: cash and XP boosts Posted: 12 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST Oh Overkill. Overkill, Overkill, Overkill. It may have been a few weeks since the fiasco surrounding you introducing microtransactions to Payday 2, despite making extensive promises you wouldn’t, but trust me when I say people are still pissed at you for it, and the latest update will certainly not make people dislike you any less than they do right now. The latest update introduces “Team Boosts”, which will give cash and XP bonuses to everybody you complete a heist with. The more players on a team with that boost, the better the effect is. The catch is that these boosts are part of the weapon skin system that requires you to pay for drills to unlock. That’s right, not only do you now have weapon boosts that make you better at hogging all the enemies if you pay for it, you also have the chance to level up and earn cash a whole lot easier. Cash can be used to unlock perks and new weapons, so this new skin is basically boosting you to be better in all areas of the game if you cough up. Another part of the update is the Completely Overkill Safe, an item given to those who bought the Completely Overkill pack forever ago. It includes one of 25 weapon skins and seven bits of DLC (out of the 27 up for sale). That sounds good, but the skin rarity and quality are randomised, so you could’ve waited eight months to get an awful skin for a gun you don’t use while someone who bought the exact same pack could get an utterly fantastic one they use all the time. Also, you’d assume people who supported Overkill by buying the Completely Overkill pack would likely already own the DLC they’ve just been given, so the entire thing is nowhere near as good as it’s made out to be. Huzzah! This update has caused another uproar in the Payday 2 community, and rightly so. Even the Steam forum moderators, who have had to try and keep things in check and been subjected to death threats during the microtransaction controversy, have gone on strike until Overkill explains what the hell it's doing:

We will no longer refuse to work if we are given a public interview with a member of Overkill. We want to be heard and see what Overkill are willing to do to fix the situation.” Something tells me throwing a few weapon skins out won’t fix this for Overkill. |
