Nintendo Badge Arcade for 3DS is leaving Japan

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 11:30 AM PST

[Update: Nintendo of America just announced that Nintendo Badge Arcade is now available in the US from the 3DS eShop!]

Nintendo Badge Arcade for 3DS is a popular application in Japan that allows users to collect badges to customize their homescreens by placing them alongside game and app icons. Badges are available from various first- and third-party franchises, with new ones being added all the time. A claw game is used to collect them.

What the trailer above fails to make crystal clear is Badge Arcade is free-to-play, and players can pay a small amount of real skrilla to purchase plays, or play for free once a day. Since the badges are strictly cosmetic, I don't see a problem with this.

Right now, Nintendo Badge Arcade is only confirmed for release in the UK, but with a Nintendo Direct coming this Thursday, I'd be surprised if it isn't confirmed then for the US as well.

This power fist served me well in Fallout 4

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 10:30 AM PST

I don't typically play Fallout with a melee build in mind (quite the opposite, actually; I love sniper rifles), but this power fist served me well for a good chunk of Fallout 4.

First off, look at it. That's some gnarly shit! It's like a makeshift Wolverine claw.

Second, this thing works wonders against the AI. So long as you have enough defense to run up to enemies, it's easy to overwhelm them with repeated punches. They might even drop their weapon, or get a crippled limb. During the first part of your adventure, when ammo for your best guns will still be scarce and expensive, it's reassuring to have a melee option to fall back on.

Rodea: The Sky Soldier on 3DS is basically a far worse Wii U version

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST

As I described in my review for Rodea: The Sky Soldier's Wii U version, the game's tumultuous development process bleeds through the finished product despite its charms. But after booting it up on 3DS, the situation was even more dire. I can put up with dated visuals -- I still play plenty of retro games to this day -- but this is something else.

Immediately, the framerate slowed to a crawl, in an almost unplayable manner. I noticed that I had the 3D effect on, but even after turning it completely off, things didn't get much better. While the Wii U game can be breathtaking at times the 3DS version has such a low draw distance and poor optimization that it's hard to tell where anything even is from a pragmatic standpoint, nevermind gazing out into the distance.

If it were a Cross-Buy title with Cross-Save capabilities, it would have been an easier pill to swallow. As it stands, I would recommend staying far away from the 3DS edition. Again, I unfortunately do not have access to the Wii version, which is said to be closer to the original vision.

Random Xbox Live members are getting free EA Access codes

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

Some Xbox Live users are finding that they suddenly have access to way more EA games than they own. That's the nature of the appropriately-named EA Access -- it's a service that allows unlimited playing of certain titles that are in the "Vault" and limited sessions with new games. EA is granting some free trials of the program in hopes that it'll convert into a few sales.

As reported on the Xbox One subreddit, some Xbox Live members are finding messages in their inbox with free month-long trials to EA Access. That's just in time for next week's release of Star Wars Battlefront. The trial comes with ten hours of playtime on Battlefront prior to the game's launch date. Those who like what they see will surely be prompted to purchase the full title.

Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be any sort of criteria as to who's getting this offer; it's just showing up in random inboxes. Consider yourself among the lucky if it shows up for you because free games (even if just for a month) is never a bad thing.

Wait what? Are you serious?! [reddit]

Steam Machines are out, so there's a game sale

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 08:30 AM PST

Today is a big hardware day for Valve. The Steam Controller ($49.99), Steam Link ($49.99), and Steam Machines (starting at $449.99) have officially launched in North America and Europe.

Impressions of those devices have been mixed, but Chris had enough good things to say about the Link to recommend it. The device allows you to stream games from your PC to your TV at 1080p -- a much more affordable option for living-room gaming than buying a mini-PC, in other words.

Whether you're planning to get a Steam Machine or not, today's game sale is worth a look.

Rocket League is now even more chaotic

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

"Get back into Rocket League" just jumped to the top of my gaming to-do list.

With the latest update on PC and PlayStation 4, mutators are in! There are a bunch of specifics to dig through -- and I've included the full patch notes below -- but in general, you can expect customization options for things like game speed, gravity, and ball type, weight, size, and bounciness.

If you would prefer to dive into a match rather than mess with settings, there's now a Mutator Mashup playlist. It's three vs. three and randomly cycles through these presets:

  • Beach Ball – A huge, slow, lightweight ball with a lot of bounce
  • Cubic – Cube shaped ball and recharging boost
  • Moonball – Low gravity action with a whole lot of boost
  • Pinball – The ball is small, light, fast and bouncy… and a lot to handle
  • Time Warp – Slow down the action as you get close to the ball

Beach Ball is the one I'm most interested in, but Time Warp should be funny, too. I imagine botched maneuvers are even more embarrassing when they happen in slow motion.

The update also adds community flags and game-themed antennas like that Vault Boy accessory.

Here's everything that can be unlocked in Star Wars Battlefront

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

It's only one week until an estimated 13 million players will hop into Star Wars Battlefront and contribute to the eternal struggle of good versus evil. Regardless of which side you're on, there will be plenty of ways to assert your dominance. Now we know what all of them are.

Thanks to the launch of the Battlefront stat-tracking app, all of the game's unlockables have been revealed. There's no more wondering what weapons, vehicles, heroes, power-ups, and Star Cards are included in the game -- they're all right here to ogle at.

GameSpot gathered all these unlock screens, and they're in a gallery below. They list all the ranks at which these things become available, which seems like useful information. The Force may be an important part of vanquishing your foes, but everything here will probably prove to be more handy.

Fallout 4 already shattered one Steam record*

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 06:30 AM PST

Less than 24 hours after release, Fallout 4 holds one of Steam's most coveted records. Well, kind of. It holds that record if you don't count other games that constantly beat out Fallout 4 and every other game.

At the time of writing, Fallout 4 has 408,996 players concurrently playing. That's the most ever for a non-Valve developed game. The previous best was from Grand Theft Auto V earlier this year when it amassed around 360,000 people simultaneously playing. Before that, Bethesda's Skyrim held the mantle of most concurrent players.

Fallout 4's numbers will surely grow throughout the day and week, but it likely won't touch Dota 2 or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Those titles routinely have more than 500,000 people playing at any given time. What would be monumental for any other game ever is just everyday business for those two.

Still, Fallout's impressive figure begs the question: "Is anybody working today?" I mean, it's a Tuesday during normal working hours. Did most of these people just call in sick? What if the UPS driver who's delivering my copy stayed home to play Fallout 4? I wouldn't like that very much even if it's to contribute to a record-breaking effort.

You can bring back a certain buddy in Metal Gear Solid V

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

As of a recent update in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it is now possible to bring back a beloved buddy who becomes unusable after you progress far enough into the story. But you're not going to like the method. In a game full of padding, there's now just a little bit more repetition.

To be clear, you'll want to stop reading now if you're looking to avoid specifics.

Spoilers.

Xbox One's Kinect gesturing is a thing of the past

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 05:30 AM PST

Kinect's role on the Xbox One is becoming more and more diminished. Another blow comes with this week's arrival of the New Xbox One Experience. For the first time ever, Microsoft has done away with hand-gesturing that couldn't be turned off when the Kinect is plugged in.

According to a story on Windows Central, Kinect gestures are not supported with the new interface. Mike Ybarra, the lead on the New Xbox One Experience team, says that this is due to a "very, very low" usage rate. "For now, we've cut that from the New Xbox One Experience. So, when we launch on [November 12], they won't be in the product. We'll continue to monitor and listen to feedback to see if people want them in," Ybarra said.

It's likely that the decision to remove Kinect gestures was made easier by the fact that most Xbox One bundles don't include the camera peripheral. Those who do have it probably enjoyed swiping through menus once to feel like the future is really here before using a controller every subsequent time.

Fragile gamer says she just can't handle Destructoid reviews anymore (Fauxclusive)

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

Wiping a stream of tears from her cheek, New Jersey gamer Claudia Bennet confirmed today she can no longer deal with reviews from Destructoid.com.

"I just don't understand," Bennet cried while clutching her copy of Fallout 4. "Why... why don't they like it?"

Bennet says she was already struggling to get by after Halo 5: Guardians only managed to score a 7, but it was yesterday's double punch of Fallout 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider reviews that pushed her into a catatonic state she has not been able to pull herself out of.

Game with the devs of WH40K: Regicide!

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 04:30 AM PST

Hammerfall Publishing, the awesome folks behind Warhammer 40K: Regicide, want to play with you! No, not like that. PUT THAT AWAY! Sheesh. We have company. These nice folks want to play their game with you silly.

What is Regicide you ask (as you hopefully zip up)? It's about the bloodiest, most amazing take on chess that I've seen. It has two modes. Classic mode follows old-school chess rules, but more murder-y. Regicide mode let's you plan your strategy and utilize tactical abilities (and some crazy powers too) to wipe your enemies clean off the board. Game has online and single player, as well as letting you choose either the Space Marines or the Orks! Why listen to my little blurb? Watch the gameplay video below and then go play with the fine folks who made it!

This is all going down from 9pm PST to 11pm PST tonight on the game's Twitch channel here. Join in the chat to play or shoot them an email here, to setup something in advance. I will be in chat (hopefully, my phone is a butt lately) handing out some game codes, but if you'd like to just comment below for chance to win, go ahead.

Leave us a comment telling us your favorite faction and how you'd like to smite your enemies. Winners will be chosen by 11/14/15 @ 11:59 PST

King of Fighers XIV may look ugly, but the mechanics seem fine so far

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

We don't have a whole lot of information regarding King of Fighters XIV, outside of the fact that it has a severely downgraded set of visuals, but based on this comparison video (with XIII), it seems mechanically sound.

There is one last glimmer of hope yet for the aforementioned undesirable art style, though. According to a rumor, SNK is reworking the game's aesthetics and will unveil the new look sometime in December. We'll see if that actually comes to fruition, but in the meantime, King of Fighters XIV seems like it plays well.

Moogles will be in Final Fantasy XV, because fans demanded it

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 03:30 AM PST

The people have spoken -- Moogles will appear in Final Fantasy XV in one way or another.

When asked by way of a Twitter poll whether or not people wanted to see the lovable creatures in the game, the yeas outweighed the nays.  According to the game's director Hajima Tabata, it will be a "fun little" incorporation, and that anything at this state "won't be very chatty."

Seems like a harmless bit of fanservice, and Tabata even notes that it only requires a light amount of development. At this point, what's another year or so?

Skylanders SuperChargers for iOS is basically the same as consoles, and that's crazy

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 03:00 AM PST

It's crazy how far mobile gaming has come in just a few short years. I still remember the wild west of mobile development with my iPod Touch, and how gems were plentiful enough, but mostly ancillary or retro experiences. Now, they're replicating full-on console games, as is the case with Skylanders SuperChargers for iOS.

Although the game launched back in September on consoles, it just hitting the mobile platform as of a few weeks ago. I just had a chance to try it out for myself on an iPad 2, and I have to say, it's remarkable how little Activision had to compromise. Priced at the same rate as the original, this mobile-centric pack comes with a controller, Bluetooth Portal, two figures, and a vehicle.

The game is technically a free download and can be played with microtransactions, but I don't recommend doing that. Instead, linking up the Portal with the mobile version will "unlock" it for free, which allows you to use any existing toy on its base. Also, just like its console kin, you can complete the entire game with just the starter kit.

During my tests, I noticed very little in the way of performance drops. Sure it looks a tad less like the Xbox One and PS4 editions and more like the previous-generation, and the framerate does dip a bit (but never too much or too often), but it's still quite impressive, and the controller is just as responsive as any other device.

If you happen to have an itch for SuperChargers at some point down the line and are looking for the cheapest option, don't count out the iOS version.

Skells ain't no joke in Xenoblade Chronicles X

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 02:30 AM PST

I've heard mixed things out of Japan regarding Xenoblade Chronicles X, but like every other release, I'm excited to experience it for myself next month. Nintendo has been consistently trying to hype people up with a series of videos throughout the past year, and this one deals with the Skells, the Xenosaga-esque mechs.

It gets technical enough, dealing with light, medium, and heavy types, vehicular transformation modules, and the intricacies of flight.

Review in Progress: StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

Although I had played countless RTS games before it (Command & Conquer, rest in peace), StarCraft grabbed me like no other in 1998. Part of it was because a large group of my friends, even those who had no prior affinity towards strategy games, flocked to it, but it was also a damn good game in general.

StarCraft II never really commanded a hold on me in the same way at launch, but after Heart of the Swarm, I started to warm up to it. From what I've played so far, Legacy of the Void builds upon everything Blizzard has accomplished to date with the series, and is a nice little sendoff for the trilogy.

The next Nintendo Direct is coming a lot sooner than you think, this week

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 01:07 AM PST

Nintendo wasn't kidding when it said it'd have Direct information in the near future. It has announced to Destructoid that the next event will be held on November 12 at 2PM PST. No doubt it'll discuss its holiday lineup, including the heavy-hitting Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I really hope it has a tribute of some sort in there for Iwata. Watch it here on Thursday.

Where to find companions in Fallout 4

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 01:00 AM PST

Seeking a friend for the end of the world? Good idea.

The Commonwealth is a nasty place. Even if you can handle super mutants and deathclaws, it's best to bring a buddy along if for no other reason than to have someone help haul that growing stockpile of extra guns, armor pieces, and miscellaneous junk.

There are around a dozen companions to find in Fallout 4. While you'll meet some of them without even trying, others aren't quite so obvious. I thought I'd lend a helping hand.

Capcom is planning even more Street Fighter V stress tests than before

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 11:30 PM PST

If you want to give Street Fighter V a go before it launches next year, you've already had plenty of opportunities, but according to Capcom, you'll have a few more. The publisher has announced that in addition to the third beta period (which is said to be the final one), but there will be more stress tests preceding it.

I think these tests have been a pretty big success so far. Nearly everyone from the top down seems to enjoy the game (myself included), and if these sessions can really iron out most of the big issues before launch, that's even better.

Telltale details assorted Walking Dead news

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST

Job Stauffer, Telltale Games' director of creative communications, recently dropped some news regarding some of its upcoming products, including The Walking Dead: Michonne

Stauffer kicked off these mini-reveals with a tweet regarding the company's upcoming Michonne-centric mini-series, indicating a release was close. IGN executive editor of news and Gearbox Software alumnus Andrew Goldfarb pleaded for a 2016 release date, but was met with a schedule announcement (and an indication that Michonne's premiere won't run any longer than three hours, if you're into that sort of thing) that almost reads like an old school mafia style threat.

"Eyy, if you don't give us the protection money like what Alfredo asked for...I dunno, maybe youze gonna wake up one mornin' and find a whole lotta games to review on ya doorstep, capiche?"

The mini-series was not the only forthcoming Telltale product mentioned by Stauffer. We will have to wait until Michonne reaches its conclusion before Telltale will publicly discuss The Walking Dead Season 3, a game that should not have anything to do with the main characters of the previous two seasons if Telltale has an ounce of self-restraint.

The Walking Dead Season 3 was confirmed last year at San Diego Comic Con by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Telltale president Kevin Bruner.

Take-Two apparently sent private investigators to the house of a GTA V modder

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

A Grand Theft Auto V modder claimed on reddit that Take-Two sent private detectives to his house in an apparent attempt to intimidate him into ceasing all development on his mods.

In August, the creators of the mod FiveM – an alternate version of GTA Online that ran separately from Rockstar’s servers – were banned from Rockstar Social Club and couldn’t play the game any more. The banning was due to the mod containing “code designed to facilitate piracy” according to Rockstar.

It’s worth pointing out GTA Online has microtransactions, which may have been the motivating factor behind shutting down the mod which still required players to have a paid-for copy of the game.

Fast-forward to now, mod creator Ntuathy has released a statement on reddit claiming Take-Two recently did some pretty scary stuff when trying to get FiveM shut down:

So I just got a pair of PIs at my door claiming to be sent by Take Two, handing me a phone with a person somewhere in the UK or US or whatever to 'discuss how to cease my activities with regard to Grand Theft Auto', that 'they know what happened before with Activision and want to not get the lawyers involved at this time', however they 'have tested their legal standing already and are quite certain of their point' and 'aren't willing to accept any solution other than ceasing my activities'. Oh, they also 'couldn't disclose any conversations they're having with other modification developers', didn't want to talk about general modification policy as 'it was just about my case' and admitted they 'looked through my source code'.

So, assuming this is true, Take-Two sent people not related to the company to do something that a legal cease-and-desist document should’ve been adequate for. They also used a communication method the modder previously had no access too and would be unable to follow up on or keep as evidence should the need arise. That’s really, really scary and incredibly shady.

Now of course, this is currently a completely unverified claim as Take-Two hasn’t released a statement about the alleged incident just yet. We’ve contacted them for a statement and will update should we get one.

Expect to see a lot more Bob Ross on Twitch.tv

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST

Bob Ross taking Twitch by storm was one of the weirdest things to happen in gaming this year. One of the calmest, gentlest presenters ever, having his entire thirty season art show shown in full on a site normally known for gaming and “YO KAPPA DARUDE LOL” nonsense in chat... and it worked.

The marathon lasted for over a week, and everybody seemed to be totally on board and positive about the entire thing. According to Twitch there were over 5.6 million unique viewers, as well as 183,000+ concurrent viewers at the high point of the marathon.

Either it was before my time, or Bob Ross never had as much success over here in the UK as he did in the States, but it’s been great to be introduced to what he did through these streams. It kind of made me, the least artistic person to have ever lived, want to give painting a go. The event had to have done some good to get people otherwise not interested involved with art, right?

Now that it’s all over, Twitch figured out that we all love Bob Ross. Not only will this marathon happen again next year on October 29, they’ve announced that every Monday will be a Bob Ross Monday. Each week, Twitch will show an entire season of The Joy of Painting on the Bob Ross channel.

Considering there are 32 seasons of the show, it’s going to take about seven months before we see any sort of repeats on the channel. Streamers will also be able to re-stream the episodes and stream themselves painting along too.

Finally, Twitch has announced where the money made from the Bob Ross channel will be going. Aside from the rights holders to Bob Ross’ work and Twitch itself, funds will be going to two charities:

  • Root Division, an organisation aiming to support artists and teach children about art in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • St. Jude, a cancer research organisation and children’s hospital.

So now you can settle down each week and paint happy little trees while doing good charity. Good job, Twitch. You did good.
