Goonies meets Stephen King's It in this new Oxenfree trailer Posted: 23 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT Apparently when ex-Telltale and ex-Disney employees get together, they make things that are both horrifying and beautiful, such as their upcoming game Oxenfree. According to the latest trailer, you'll play as a teenage girl spending the night with her friends on an island where radio stations that don't really exist can be heard. This all takes place a year after her (I assume) brother died. I can't help but get vibes of Stephen King's It, mixed with adventure films like The Goonies while watching the trailer. Oxenfree releases in just a few short months for Xbox One and PC in January of 2016.
Der Riese returns for Call of Duty: Black Ops III Posted: 23 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT Treyarch sure has made good use of its "Der Riese" map. The Zombies level first appeared in Call of Duty: World at War, then it was revitalized for Black Ops, and now it's back again in Black Ops III (but only for folks who buy one of the special editions of the game or the season pass, and only on PC, PS4, and Xbox One). Under its new form, the map is "The Giant," which is just a translation of the original name. Anyway: Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, and Richtofen are back, and so are those damned hellhounds.
Ghostbusters, Luigi's Mansion, and the conquering of fear Posted: 23 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT [It's amazing how far we've come when it comes to popularizing ghosts. Medieval peasants probably thought the phenomena of ghosts were nigh unstoppable omens of destruction that spelled the end of your life as you know it. And then the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was created. ~Strider] You might not realize it, but 1984's Ghostbusters is one of the most culturally influential movies of all time. Well, okay, you probably did know that already, what with the way the film has been seen by multiple generations of millions of people, inspired a number of catchphrases and slang terms, sold billions of dollars worth of merchandise, and ensured that Ray Parker Jr. would never have to work again. But what you might not have thought much about is the way the film fundamentally changed the way we view ghosts.
Destiny's Hard Mode raid is pretty much the same, and that's mostly okay Posted: 23 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT When designing the King's Fall raid in Destiny, the developers noted that they created Hard Mode first, then went to Normal. It makes sense, then, that the two would basically be the same. I just have mixed feelings about the loot system.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered is looking slick Posted: 23 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT Yesterday evening, Double Fine teased some new developments on the classic LucasArts adventure game Day of the Tentacle. Today and all this weekend, Tim Schafer's studio will be showing off Day of the Tentacle Remastered at Indiecade in Los Angeles. For those of us who aren't near the City of Angels, we have some screenshots to gander. They sure are crisp. It's especially cool to see how faithful the translation is to HD. Sure, everything has been redrawn to today's standards, but so much of that original art's style is preserved. Along with the updated artwork, Day of the Tentacle is also getting remastered audio and some currently unknown "special features" added to it.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions shows up on Steam Posted: 23 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT High Moon Studios' Deadpool recently resurfaced on Steam, and now PC players can check out another older Marvel title, Beenox's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. By most accounts, it's a decent game. The story centers on four different versions of Spider-Man (Amazing, Noir, 2099, and Ultimate) thanks to the wonders of parallel universes. It is disappointing to see Activision charge $29.99 for the port, but that price will drop with time. I have to wonder if other Marvel properties might make a comeback on Steam. Any favorites? Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions [Steam]
Nintendo teases open-world twist for the next Zelda Posted: 23 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT Speaking to IGN, Eiji Aonuma revealed he has a twist planned for the upcoming Zelda title for Wii U, based on feedback received from Skyward Sword. "We actually had some feedback from Skyward Sword, where people were saying, 'This is not exactly the Zelda game I was looking for, I was looking for a bigger open world.' Unfortunately, I can't go into details but I'm hoping to put a surprise, or kind of a twist, on my view of an open world game. I hope that you'll look forward to it." Let the speculation begin!
Happy Friday! Have a HAWP about Ecco the Dolphin Posted: 23 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT It's Friday afternoon, and you know what that means. Game news slows down. You're doing lots of sitting around idly, pretending to be busy, waiting to slip out of work and start up the weekend as soon as possible. Maybe you need something to pass the time. Maybe I can help with that. The latest Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'? features the Burches talking about the classic Genesis title Ecco the Dolphin. Or maybe it's something else? Somehow, Ashly can't remember the game she is currently playing. It's understandable to be kind of out of it though; it's Friday!
Splatoon to settle the pirates vs. ninjas debate Posted: 23 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT Now this is a Splatfest worth getting behind. Nintendo will thrust Splatoon players into the familiar pirates versus ninjas debate just in time for Halloween. The stage is set: 9:00pm Pacific on October 30. The ensuing 24 hours of online battles will determine a victor. Going forward, the multiplier for wins during Splatfest is 6x, not the usual 4x. Something to keep in mind if your team loyalty leans more toward the probable winner than personal taste. I'm sure this topic has come up on the site before, but I won't pretend to know which side the average Destructoid reader supports. Make a case.
Oh, right, Just Cause 3 has a story Posted: 23 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT I'm a fan of the Just Cause series for its freedom of movement, particularly when it comes to aerial antics, but some people live for all-out destruction. Others, like Destructoid reader Coil_Whine, are into the story. That's the focus of today's trailer. "I got a plan," Rico says. "We've got to show the people we can take back their cities and towns for them." If you think the best way to accomplish that is by blowing up those exact cities and towns, your training is complete. I mean, the tagline for Just Cause 3 is literally "set the world on fire."
| Heroes of the Storm's new Halloween content is pricey Posted: 23 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT Blizzard is about to hold its Hallow's End event in Heroes of the Storm and that means a new mount and skin, a 50 percent XP boost in all regions, and the chance to unlock a Jack-O'-Lantern portrait. The new Headless Horseman's Charger mount and the Buccaneer skin for Falstad look good, but they won't come cheap. They'll be available in a bundle with Falstad for $21.35, and that's the inexpensive option. Blizzard will also offer a Hallow's End Ultimate Bundle for $53.04 that adds Kerrigan, Abathur, and their spooky skins. Thank goodness for dynamic pricing. The XP boost lasts from 10:00am Pacific on October 27 to 10:00am on November 3. As for the new portrait, we'll just have to play 25 matches during the event. The deadline is November 17. | Friday Night Fights - You dirty rat edition Posted: 23 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide releases today. Oh boy, am I excited. I've had a blast in my short time with the beta. Yes, the game is basically L4D Ratz Edition. The atmosphere, the fighting, and the characters make it stand out from that title though. The feeling of swinging my Dwarven axe and taking off a Skaven head or two, is a thing of beauty. Playing James Cagney sound clips during a game is something my teammates do not appreciate though. Damn savages. Other than rodent slaying, I've been getting down with the League of Rocket. Rolling in my DeLorean, jocking da bitches, smacking da ho's. The iconic ride has a wide turn radius, but can easily be accounted for if you use the handbrake (unless you're Jinx :o). Bought that bad boy through extensive card farming the past week and a half. Made $19 as of this morning. It's gotten me 3 games and some DLC, and I'm probably going to grab something out of the Codemasters sale to cure my racing itch. Who gives a shit about that though? Let's play some games together! |
Trails in the Sky SC finally comes out next week Posted: 23 Oct 2015 05:45 AM PDT After leaving us on a cliffhanger for nearly five years, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC is finally coming to western shores next week, the localization team at XSEED announced today. The long-awaited role-playing game will be available in English on October 29 for PSP (with PS Vita comparability) in North America and worldwide on Windows PC via GOG.com and Steam. A European release on the PlayStation Store will follow shortly after the North American launch.
A poor mechanic is Assassin's Creed Syndicate's greatest feature Posted: 23 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT The magnitude of Assassin's Creed is as great as ever this year. Syndicate's London is said to be 30 percent larger than Assassin's Creed Unity's size, and it feels every inch of it. Upon unlocking the open world, simply navigating to the map and zooming out makes seeing everything seem like an unconquerable task. Fortunately, it's not that bad, due to Assassin's Creed's newest and most notable addition: a grappling hook. This device is acquired early on, and it makes traversal much easier. In short, Assassin's Creed wastes less of your time this year with finicky climbing controls. If that sounds like a godsend, well, it kind of is. The grappling hook doubles as a zipline, so it creates an instantaneous path between you and another location along your route. Zooming to the top of an imposing edifice feels magical when compared to the minutes it would have taken in prior games. It's efficient enough that you have to wonder how Ubisoft will shoehorn it into future titles, because going back will seem like a downgrade. The ironic thing is that the grappling hook is a very poor mechanic in the context of gameplay. I found myself running around the streets spamming the left bumper and praying that the cue to latch onto something -- anything -- would appear. I had completely given up on the notion of pathfinding or climbing (mind you, a pillar of Assassin's Creed play), and just hoped that I'd be transported where I wanted to go.
Posted: 23 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT PC gaming has come a long way since I first witnessed it in the '80s. There were hundreds of peripherals, from first- to third-party controllers, joysticks, proprietary flight sim devices, to full-on vibrating vests for games like Mech Warrior. On my journey through the PC world I've seen it all, and most of it was expensive and inelegant. Thankfully, Microsoft came around with a unified solution eventually: Xbox controllers. Pretty much every PC gamer I know uses one, and for the most part, modern games are plug and play. Except, Valve recently decided that it wants to get in on the action and took the Xbox design a step further, integrating full-on keyboard and mouse support into it. Having spent the last week with it however, I'd recommend waiting for the next iteration.
Slam 22% off Street Fighter V on PC as beta finally goes live Posted: 23 Oct 2015 04:45 AM PDT Today at 9AM PST the Street Fighter V beta numero dos went live on PC and PS4. To get access to the PC version's beta, you'll need to pre-order the game, which is full price on Steam Store as of writing. The cheapest Steam key deal is at GMG, where today a new 22% off coupon code cuts a good $13.20 off SFV's list price.
Arslan: The Warriors of Legend will launch in February in the west Posted: 23 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT Ever since I laid eyes on it I've been looking forward to Arslan: The Warriors of Legend. Thankfully I had a chance to play it at TGS recently, and my suspicions were confirmed -- it was not only a great looking Warriors game, but a fun experience as well. Even though the anime isn't as well known in the west, the game is still getting a localization, and Koei Tecmo has set a release date of February 9, 2016 for the US. It'll arrive on both the PS4 and Xbox One at retail, as well as digitally on PS3.
Posted: 23 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT Fans of soul-crushing platformers like Super Meat Boy and Spelunky will feel right at home within the sadistic circus rings of Penarium. The 2D arena survival-fest puts players in the shoes of a young farmer named Willy, who has been kidnapped and forced to fight for his life within the various stages of a violently chaotic traveling circus. At its most basic, Penarium has Willy jumping from platform to platform to complete a seemingly simple goal. Things quickly become more complicated once traps and complex objectives are introduced to the game. It slowly turns up the heat until levels suddenly become surprisingly complex. This somewhat overwhelming difficulty put my patience to the test, but in a good way. Even after failing miserably at a deceptively easy task and hurling obscenities into the air, I still found myself coming back to Penarium for more.
Zelda: Tri Force Heroes is in the same timeline as A Link Between Worlds Posted: 23 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT Well, this is interesting. Fans asked Nintendo repeatedly where Tri Force Heroes falls on the Zelda timeline, and the developers actually had an answer for them. Taking to Twitter, the official Nintendo account noted that "the game takes place several years after A Link Between Worlds and features the same hero." It goes on to state that he dresses differently to "hide his heroic origins," but the player character is in fact "the true Hyrulian hero." Well, that makes sense as the game does hint towards that a bit in its typical comedic fashion, but still, nice to see it confirmed. Nintendo of America [Twitter]
Ninja Theory's facial tech for Hellblade is pretty rad Posted: 23 Oct 2015 03:15 AM PDT Although I trust Ninja Theory in terms of gameplay as far as I can throw them, they know how to make a pretty piece of art, that's for sure. This new developer video explains the process a bit for Hellblade, mostly in terms of how the facial capture tech was implemented. The main character is actually modeled after Melina Juergens, a video editor on the team, and she shares her experiences in the video above, which involve some really cool low and high tech solutions. Hellblade is still on track for a 2016 release on PC and PS4.
Audacious iOS developer rips off basically every fighting game Posted: 23 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT I'm not into fighting games, so I have no experience with Skullgirls. The animation is gorgeous, but that's about where you lose me. However, I did sit in on a packed Lab Zero Games panel at Anime Expo, and let me tell you from experience -- people love Skullgirls. An "enterprising" iOS developer, Nguyen Hiep, has capitalized on this adoration with Skullgirls 2: Deadly Airport -- a very bad game designed to trick people into downloading it so they will look at some ads, lining Hiep's pockets as a result. Don't worry about downloading it for a laugh, because I've done that for you. The game is ostensibly a mobile fighter, but it's really so much more than that. It is a Nightmare on Elm Street-esque purgatory. Not just because it's a horrible game, but because I found myself invested in the outcome for a split second. It got me, and now I count myself among the damned. It features Poison from Final Fight, some other fighting game characters I don't recognize, the DualShock 4 d-pad & buttons, and the iconic Mortal Kombat 'finish him' graphic. I did not make it far enough into the game to see if the MK graphic actually makes an appearance. A cursory glance at Hiep's other apps reveal a trend, featuring such gems as a Minecraft platformer that I swear is using Super Mario coins, a practically identical fighting game, a Meat Boy ripoff, and a practically identical fighting game but with Dragon Ball Z sprites.
| Sony: 'There are no first party titles that are in development for the PlayStation Vita' Posted: 23 Oct 2015 02:15 AM PDT As we all expected, something is rotten in Denmark when it comes to Sony's position on the PlayStation Vita. Speaking to Sony Computer Entertainment executive vice president Masayasu Ito, 4Gamer recently uncovered that there are no first-party Vita games in development. Instead, Ito noted the wide variety of third-party titles available, but stressed, “Currently, there are no first party titles that are in development for the PlayStation Vita. Third-party companies are working hard on the PlayStation Vita, so we here at SCE have strategized to focus on our new platform of PlayStation 4.” Yep, all those great third-party titles on the horizon such as "Fallout 4 remote play" and "that other game you can remote play." "Strategy" is also an odd term to use, as I would have gone with "abandonment." Sony recently came out and blamed the mobile market for the Vita's failure, but again, I place most of that blame on the company. It handled the launch of the Vita terribly, forced people to buy expensive, proprietary memory cards while 3DS owners could just cheaply purchase SD cards at a fraction of the price, and gave up on the platform far too early. They may be winning the console war in terms of sales, but I find myself clutching my PSP fondly, remembering the days when Sony knew how to market a handheld. Now we may never see one again from it. | Microsoft is getting more cagey about sharing Xbox One sales Posted: 23 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT So, it's no secret that Microsoft is losing to Sony strictly in terms of Xbox One and PS4 sales. Phil Spencer has even acknowledged this fact. But it appears as if Microsoft is shifting gears a bit, and isn't going to focus on console sales anymore. Instead, the metric used for success going forward is "Xbox Live usership," and the Windows 10 and Xbox divisions have been merged when it comes to quarterly reports. Additionally, expect even less info than we get now regarding console shipments and sales. Microsoft is reporting that there has been a year-over-year decline, mostly due to the lower adoption rate of the 360 -- likely, this number is due to users upgrading to the new platform of choice, the PS4. So how are they doing now? Well, by the new metric, Microsoft reports 39 million Xbox Live users. But, the way said Live users are measured has been changed, as it now only counts people who have logged in within the past month, and there seems to be no dichotomy between paying and non-paying costumers. | It turns out that Destiny's terrible Iron Banner loot was due to a 'bug' Posted: 23 Oct 2015 01:00 AM PDT Last week, Destiny players everywhere were frustrated that the Iron Banner PVP event, a game mode they put hours of work into, yielded really poor loot despite Bungie's claims that it would be worth playing. Well, according to the developer, the loot issues were due to a "nasty bug" that affects both Crucible and Iron Banner drops. Uh, that's strange, because Crucible yielded better results than Iron Banner last week. So once again, we can chalk up another failed public event to Bungie's lengthy list, even a year after the game has been out. As one astute user pointed out on reddit, "if this bug resulted in giving players better loot, it would have been fixed within a matter of hours." Haha, so true. Destiny Weekly Update [Bungie] |
Here are the known bugs for the New Xbox One Experience preview Posted: 23 Oct 2015 12:30 AM PDT If you happen to be a part of the New Xbox One Experience (NXOE) preview, you might have run into a few issues regarding specific apps. Microsoft has responded to these problems, doling out a known list of programs that either are completely broken, or are undergoing maintenance. Note that if you opt out now, you won't have access to the preview program at all. Game Informer has uncovered a full list straight from Microsoft (found below), and also notes that if you have issues with discs in particular, you should eject them and re-insert the disc. Additionally, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Xbox Fitness, Further Bedlam, Titanfall, The Crew, and Nightmares from the Deep are having problems. Keep in mind that this is a preview program, and the inherent risks involved are obvious -- you're beta testing an OS so that when it does see a wide release, everything will work as intended. Still, it's great to be informed if you're going forward with the preview. Considering The New Xbox One Experience Preview? Here Are The Known Issues [Game Informer]
DestrUKtoid Episode 24 - Good Jokes Week Posted: 23 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT The UK, it exists and Destructoid now has writers there. Great British Pounds. Eastenders. Steptoe and Son. The Destructoid UK Podcast (DestrUKtoid). This week UK Editor Laura Dale is joined by Joe Parlock and Vikki Blake to talk about Until Dawn maybe getting DLC, Harmonix reviewing its own game on Amazon, and we have some actual decent jokes sent to us by Twitter. Have a listen on iTunes or direct download.
No Season Pass for Call of Duty: Black Ops III on Xbox 360 Posted: 22 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT Call of Duty: Black Ops III on Xbox 360 will not be getting a Season Pass. According to the listing on the Xbox Store, the Season Pass -- which includes "four epic DLC map packs" -- is "not available" on Xbox 360.
You can finally make a wishlist on the PSN Store Posted: 22 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT You can now create a wishlist on the PlayStation Store. Right now the feature is limited to the website and app, which means you're unable to add to your list whilst browsing on your PS3 or PS4 console. Still -- it's a handy feature, and one that's particularly welcome as we step towards the holiday season and eleventy gazillion games are released between now and Christmas. The Add Wallet Funds section -- which used to sit in that spot -- has now moved. You can access it by hovering over your username on the website. BRB, ADDING ALL THE GAMES EVER.
The new Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir trailer will melt your eyeballs with how pretty it is Posted: 22 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT Just in case you missed it, Atlus announced Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir a few months ago. A full HD remake of its popular (and beautiful) action JRPG, Leifthrasir will also feature some tweaks to the combat system, and making some other changes such as adding mid-bosses. There will also be a “classic mode” for purists who’d rather just have a shinier Odin Sphere. Up top you can see the latest trailer for Leifthrasir, showing how absolutely bloody gorgeous it is. Oh, and it shows some gameplay. I heard that’s a thing people are interested in sometimes when wanting to buy a game. But look at it. I want to either eat it, marry it, or paint a portrait of it, but I’m not quite sure which one will get me the fewest weird looks. Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir will release January 14 for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita in Japan, with a North American release coming at some point in 2016.
| There's 'plenty of chance' Halo 5 could come to PC, according to series director Posted: 22 Oct 2015 07:00 PM PDT Ever since the dinosaurs went extinct, there have been three constants in this world: the sun will rise, the sun will set, and we’ll never see another main series Halo game on PC. After the frankly excellent port of Combat Evolved and the killed-by-Vista-exclusivity port of Halo 2, Microsoft has firmly kept the series as an Xbox exclusive, instead throwing us a bone in the form of Halo: Spartan Assault. It seems as though the end times are upon us, my friend, as one of those constants might not be as constant as we expected. In an interview with GamesRadar on Twitch.tv, series director Frank O’Connor has suggested the newest tile Halo 5: Guardians is likely to come to PC in the future.
The quote is at 1:13:00 in the video below should you want to hear for yourself.
So who knows? Best case scenario would be a neat HD revamp of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 released alongside PC ports of Halo 3, ODST, Reach, 4, and 5, but I would be more than happy for just Halo 5 if push comes to shove. Halo 5 Series Director Frank O’Connor: “Plenty of chance that Halo 5 could appear on the PC” [DSOGaming] |
