| There are some unsettling amiibo outfits in Yoshi's Woolly World Posted: 16 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT Yoshi's Woolly World has been out in Europe since June, but it's only now available in North America. During that wait, I mostly forgot about the game's extensive amiibo support. Compatible amiibo grant a new look for Yoshi, but these aren't so much costumes as they are telepod experiments gone wrong. (Not that I'm complaining.) You've probably seen the mustachioed Mario-style Yoshi by now, but what about ROB? Or the Inkling Squid? Let's take a look. | ||||||
| This weekend's PSN flash sale is about survival Posted: 16 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT Some of the games in this latest PlayStation Network flash sale fit the "survival" theme well. Others require more imagination. But really, it's the deals themselves that matter most. I have a few recommendations. Notably, there's Tokyo Jungle for $2.25, which ought to be a part of your PS3 library. It's essential! There's also Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward for $10; PS Vita owners can fill you in on that one. Lastly, on PS4, there's Everybody's Gone to the Rapture for $8. | ||||||
| Arma, DayZ developer bought a tank Posted: 16 Oct 2015 11:30 AM PDT Arma and DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive has bought itself a a decommissioned T-72 main battle tank. While the developer is doing incredibly well with zombie survival game DayZ, it's mostly known for its hardcore war games like Arma. "A massive tanks goes out to everyone who has supported the studio and its games throughout the past 16 years. Your enthusiasm and support have been astonishing," Bohemia stated in a press release. Bohemia just announced its current Arma 3 plans in a blog post. | ||||||
| Microsoft insists 'vast majority' of Xbox One Kinect owners still use it Posted: 16 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT It only took a year to go from the Xbox One won't function without Kinect to Microsoft selling Kinect-free Xbox Ones. And while it's been easy to live a clean, Kinect-free life these past one and a half years (the same one and a half years wherein the Xbox One has sold way more than it did initially), the Kinect is not forgotten. "Overall, we don't break down how many console users have Kinect and how many don't," Xbox chief marketing officer Mike Nichols told Polygon. "That's a level of granularity we don't want to get into. I can say that the people with Kinect still make up a very, very sizable portion and that those people do use it quiet frequently. Less for games, but a lot more for biometric sign-in and user interface." Nichols says a, "vast majority" of Kinect owners use it regularly, not just The Kinect Four, a nickname I just made up for the four people in the world who use the fucking thing. I have to question the notion that, "people with Kinect still make up a very, very sizable portion" of Xbox One owners given how much better the console sold unshackled from the peripheral, but the idea that a strong majority of Kinect owners use it regularly? I mean, sound off, guys. Who's using it regularly? I had about two weeks of novelty in turning the Xbox One off via voice commands while others were using it, and the thing has been firmly unplugged ever since. The lack of guaranteed Kinect ownership has impacted Xbox One UI. "[S]o few people" used gesture controls, so the option was removed. Meanwhile Cortana, Microsoft's version of Siri, will come to Xbox One this year in preview form and work with either Kinect or a mic and headset. | Free life-sized Tomb Raider statue for your Lara Croft shrine Posted: 16 Oct 2015 10:45 AM PDT Who says Twitter is not good for anything? Apparently PCGamer-et al publisher Future US is moving office and giving away this gigantic Lara Croft (or Future's president is a very small man) to anyone who "re-tweets" the post. You either have to pick it up in the Bay Area or pay for shipping yourself, but what's several hundred dollars for a giant Lara and the glory of claiming this monstrosity on behalf of Destructoid? | ||||||
| Steam Link commercial: What do Team Fortress 2 characters play on their day off? Posted: 16 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT Steam's Link is out today and while the svelte black box lacks defining features like pointy ears and an emerald green tunic, people are digging it. Our own Chris Carter seems pretty fond of the $50 box, which is meant to serve as a simple way to stream your Steam games from your main PC to, say, your living room television. And so here's a cute, Team Fortress tinged commercial with the gang playing Rocket League, Cities: Skylines, Gang Beasts, and even Street Fighter IV during open heart surgery. My only question with regard to the Steam Link is: do a lot of you have an extra bedroom dedicated to gaming, or something? I figure there's two places folks are liable to have a nice computer: 1) in their bedrooms, because they don't have living rooms, or 2) in their living rooms. I guess if there's a separate living room computer desk away from the television and you don't want to string 20ft of HDMI across the room it makes sense to nab one of these. I just opted to stick a gaming PC next to the TV and work off a laptop. But still, more specialty options for folks who can afford them and benefit from them are fine, I suppose. Who's rearing up for either a Link or a full-fledged Steam Machine? | ||||||
| Hundreds of EA Origin accounts leaked online yesterday Posted: 16 Oct 2015 10:15 AM PDT Yesterday, a now-removed Pastebin was full of personal data on EA Origin account holders, according to CSO Online. While most fields in the text dump were redacted or incomplete, roughly 600 Origin accounts beginning with letter A through F were compromised, listing associated Gmail addresses, passwords, and games tied to the accounts. Former Origin community manager Sam Houston said it could be an attack to gain access to valuable accounts, or that, "this dump could just be someone targeting EA in response to something." EA's senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told Polygon, "At this point, we have no indication that this list was obtained through an intrusion of our account databases." Regardless of how this information came to light, some peoples' accounts were definitely compromised, though apparently only a small number of the listed accounts were still active. "In an abundance of caution, we're taking steps to secure any account that has an EA user ID that matches the usernames on this list," Reseburg said. Always practice safe web surfing and lock down your accounts with two-step verification! Data dump suggests possible breach at Electronic Arts [CSO Online] | ||||||
| I'm not entirely sold on the Steam Controller yet Posted: 16 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT Right now, I'm happy with my $50 Steam Link streaming box. It works exactly as it should, and the quality is impeccable. It helps that the thing is first-party after all and is designed to work with Steam. The controller, on the other hand, is taking a little while to acclimate to. | ||||||
| Link just doesn't know what to wear in Tri Force Heroes' costume trailer Posted: 16 Oct 2015 09:45 AM PDT Oh my god did you change again!? Looks, it takes me a long time to get ready to go out, so I know what Link's going through. You just want to look your best. Sometimes you nail it, sometimes you kick back and forth between shirts and shoes and spants. This isn't all the outfits available in this glorified game of dress up with a dungeon puzzler tacked on -- where's that one you can only get through local play? -- but it's a decent smattering of looks. That Cheetah Costume is great, though. | ||||||
| Meet one of Fallout 4's characters early in Fallout Shelter Posted: 16 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT The many-millions-maker Vault dwelling mobile game from Bethesda, Fallout Shelter, got its 1.2 update, which includes a new survival mode and, for some, one of Fallout 4's characters. Piper, who runs a newspaper in Fallout 4, has been added as a legendary character, but she is exclusive to Apple device's App Store (along with five free lunchboxes). The free-to-play game made its way to Android two months ago, about two months after it launched for iOS after being announced at Bethesda's E3 event. The new survival mode makes the game harder and lets you skip the tutorial upon starting a new game, while cloud saves let you take your game across all of your devices. You can also earn bottlecaps for identifying "a mysterious individual" who has been spotted in Vaults and scavenge dead Raider invaders. | ||||||
| PSA: Yarn Yoshi amiibo go on sale on Amazon in 15 minutes Posted: 16 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT [Update: Blue Yoshi just went on sale.] Friends, the day has finally arrived when the cutest amiibo go on sale. The Yoshi's Woolly World Yarn Yoshis are now available to buy and snuggle. If E3 taught us anything, it's that yarn can be amazingly adorable. For those who don't want to venture out into stores, Amazon's putting its stock of Yarn Yoshis up in just a few minutes. At 1pm PST, Pink Yoshi will be for sale; at 2pm PST, Blue Yoshi rounds out the easy, low-stress day. Amazon says that it has "a decent amount more pink than blue," so blue-chasers will want to be on their game. Pro-tip: You might want to camp these pages instead of the official product pages (Pink, Blue). In the past, these have actually updated faster to reflect Amazon as the seller. People who were looking here had a slight leg-up over the competition. If something seems amiss, that's because it is. You can't buy regular classic Green Yoshi a la carte. He only comes in the Yoshi's Woolly World bundle. There's a chance that he'll be released individually somewhere down the line, but not yet. It's only variants today. The same rules are in effect as always: There's a limit of one of each figure per customer. One-click ordering is turned-off. Make sure your address and credit card information is sorted ahead of time. Adding an amiibo to your cart doesn't reserve it; you have to checkout to complete the order. Now that we have an understanding about how this all works, prepare to hang out by your computer. This first one goes on sale in 15 minutes, and all those hard plastic amiibo you've been buying aren't the best cuddlers. Pink Yarn Yoshi, Blue Yarn Yoshi [Amazon] | ||||||
| PewDiePie nearly has enough money to buy his soul back (Fauxclusive) Posted: 16 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT Earlier this week Forbes Magazine listed the ten richest celebrities on YouTube and to the surprise of absolutely no one, gaming personality PewDiePie ranked as the top YouTube earner with more than $12 million dollars made over the last year. Shortly after the list was revealed, sources in Hell confirmed that this is nearly enough money for the Internet sensation to buy his soul back from the Devil. PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, sold his soul back in 2011 to achieve the current worldwide superstardom he enjoys today. According to Abaddon the Destroyer, a quirk in the contract PewDiePie signed with the Father of All Lies could make him the first human to successfully get their soul back from the Devil since Hitler. "Originally you could only get your soul back in a fiddle contest, but we discontinued that practice back in the late 1970s because of that asshole Charlie Daniels," the Angel of The Abyss explained. "That's when we switched to our current monetary system. Normally, we require a worldwide celebrity to pay us $500 million dollars as well as promise us the blood of their first born child if they wish to get their soul back; but because this was YouTube, and remember nobody was making money on YouTube back then, we decided to give him a regrettably steep discount." If the next 12 months can be equally profitable for PewDiePie, Abaddon says he'll not only be able to buy his own soul back but also purchase the soul of a lesser Internet celebrity, like JonTron or theRadBrad. | ||||||
| Black Ops III's new mode is more Mirror's Edge than Call of Duty Posted: 16 Oct 2015 08:45 AM PDT Don't expect Call of Duty: Black Ops III to be all killing. Well, it'll be a fair amount of that. But there's also some running, and the game's newest mode focuses squarely on that. During a developer livestream today, Treyarch showed off the Freerun mode. It's an obstacle course designed to take advantage of Black Ops III's movement mechanics. Treyarch says that it'll be punishing on higher difficulties and that competition for leaderboard glory will be tight and fierce. Freerun doesn't completely holster the guns, though. Targets pop up that need shooting. For every bullet missed, it adds a harsh one-second penalty to your time. Inaccuracy's enough to turn a great run into a bad one. The above video shows off the new mode, and the good stuff starts at about 16:45. For once, Call of Duty chooses flight over fight. | ||||||
| WB reveals what's left in the Batman: Arkham Knight Season Pass Posted: 16 Oct 2015 08:30 AM PDT I can't believe we're still talking about Batman: Arkham Knight. I mean, that's what an elongated Season Pass will do you to, I guess. Anyway, so far the Season Pass has been a massive disappointment. All three of the "episodes" so far have been middling (Quinn, Red Hood, and Batgirl), and the rest is just a bunch of skins for Batman and the Batmobile. WB has explained what's left, and it looks like there's more content lined up for November and December. Firstly, "Catwoman's Revenge" and "A Flip of a Coin" (with Robin) are coming next month. They are episodes, so they're likely going to feature those characters in a playable fashion, and will last anywhere from 15-30 minutes. In December, the "Most Wanted" expansion is coming, which consists of missions from four big bads -- Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, Mad Hatter, and Ra's Al Ghul. These seem more promising, as the Most Wanted bits were one of the best parts of Arkham Knight proper. Character selection is also coming to AR Challenges this month. So yeah, that's what you spent $50 on. Batman: Arkham Knight [WB Games] | ||||||
| Sega: Yakuza 5 coming west in mid-November Posted: 16 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT I've been starting to wonder if Yakuza 5 would actually be releasing in 2015, as Sega and Sony promised at last year's PlayStation Experience and have scarcely mentioned since, but it seems the long wait is nearly over. According to Sega, Yakuza 5 is targeting a mid-November launch. "Unfortunately, it’s a little later than we would’ve liked, and a few weird development bugs that popped up in localization caused the delay," a Sega representative wrote via the company's blog today. "Without getting too technical, there were just certain parts that didn’t like switching the Japanese text out for English, and we had to actually search through the source code to find a fix, taking more time than we expected. But! Everything is more or less back on track. Once we have details beyond just 'mid-November,' we’ll make sure to share them!" Yakuza 5 was released in Japan back in December 2012. Since then, Sega has published a prequel set in the 1980s, another that takes place during the late Edo period, and announced a new game, Yakuza 6, starring famous entertainer Beat Takeshi and a remake of the first entry in the series. Rest assured, Sega's localization team will have no shortage of work when this project wraps. Top 5 Movies to Get Hyped for Yakuza 5 [Sega] | ||||||
| Telltale's The Walking Dead free on Xbox via Games with Gold Posted: 16 Oct 2015 07:30 AM PDT I was one of those people who resisted playing Telltale's The Walking Dead adventure series for the longest time. Maybe you still are. If so, here's a nudge: the complete first season is free to download on Xbox 360 and Xbox One with an Xbox Live Gold account. Specifically, you'll have until October 31 to claim the game on Xbox 360 and until November 15 to claim it on Xbox One. After those dates, Microsoft will swap The Walking Dead out for something else in Games with Gold. It's a compelling story worth experiencing first-hand. Dark City is also good. | ||||||
| EA: Remakes happen when you're 'out of ideas' Posted: 16 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT Electronic Arts isn't keen on re-releasing games in its back catalogue on new platforms. Speaking with IGN, EA Chief Operating Office Peter Moore said the practice of remaking older titles "feels like pushing stuff out because you’ve run out of ideas." "I don’t know where we find the time to do remakes," Moore added. "We’re a company that just likes to push forward." While Moore recognizes the appeal of remakes, saying "For a lot of companies, remakes are a way to drive revenue," he maintains "we don’t do that here [at EA]. I don’t think that’s ever been in our culture." While the sentiment seems fair enough, it would be nice to see EA pushing new ideas more often. Aside from the adorable Unravel, it's been donkey's years since EA made something truly unique. EA has no interest or time for HD remakes [IGN] | ||||||
| Posted: 16 Oct 2015 06:30 AM PDT Yoshi's Woolly World is the epitome of adorable. From Yoshi's cute, easily read facial expressions to the bright colourful world he inhabits, the intricate minor details to the tactile physicality of the world, this game took the baton from Kirby's Epic Yarn and ran with it at full speed. Still, the biggest question on many gamer's minds is whether the game will mechanically live up to the promise of its beautiful aesthetic. Simply put, how it holds up is largely going to depend on what you're looking for. | ||||||
| Friday Night Fights - You get a new car and you... Posted: 16 Oct 2015 06:15 AM PDT ...get a NEW CAR!!! WOOOOOOOOOOO! Header idea came from a joke our lovely Jed Whitaker made in an email. Thank you Jed. I am pleased with the end result. I spent way too long last night working on different images until this one came together. Can't have a header and joke like this, without actually giving away something though. So let's start this off with 5 keys for Animal Gods on Steam! Don't worry if you miss out, you'll have another crack at getting one tomorrow (Thanks to the folks at Still Games). Here's the codes:
Now go play some damn games together and have a great weekend :) | ||||||
| What if your garbage kid throws your Elite controller parts down a storm drain? Posted: 16 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT I briefly tinkered with the Xbox One Elite controller at E3 as part of a larger platform demo about the direction of the system. I didn't play any games with it or mess with any high-level customization programming. Instead, I merely swapped thumbsticks out and clipped in new paddles. Those couple of minutes brought about conflicting emotions. I was impressed by the feel of the controller. It's very sturdy, like it's built for people who break controllers from the sheer quantity of gaming they do. Also, there are a lot of parts to keep track of -- something that should be a cause of concern for many. All these pieces are nicely housed in the controller's little carrying bag, but that's a best-case scenario. What if you eventually get lazy and figure it's easier to temporarily leave a part on the coffee table immediately after switching it out? Or, more realistically for some, what if your kid gets a hold of that bag and treats it like one of their toys? They may microwave your d-pads, cover your paddles in bubblegum, and throw your thumbsticks down a sewer drain. Kids are a force to be reckoned with. Anyway, at E3, that's where my brain immediately went. "How is Microsoft going to offer replacement parts for the Xbox One Elite controller?" At the time, it was simple curiosity. Now, less than two weeks from the controller's launch, it's a pressing matter. And, no one's willing to talk about it. | ||||||
| Nintendo reportedly shipping NX dev kits Posted: 16 Oct 2015 05:45 AM PDT Nintendo has started sending software development kits for its next video game platform, NX, according to The Wall Street Journal. Sources tell the outlet that the system will "likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use." That's what most of us expect at this point, right? While Nintendo maintains that it won't talk about specifics regarding NX until 2016, there's speculation consumers might be able to buy the system as early as that year. On Twitter, WSJ reporter Takashi Mochizuki said the NX is "likely to 1) have more than two devices 2) come with powerful chips 3) be launched by end of 2016." If the hybrid approach works the way I'm envisioning it, I am on board. My favorite part about the Wii U, by far, is the GamePad. I'd like to see Nintendo push that concept further. | Zelda and Zero Suit Samus costumes in Fatal Frame Posted: 16 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT Being a young girl whose only defense against ghosts and vampires is a camera can be quite spoopy, so for those who want to feel more empowered, how about putting on the suit of a renowned bounty hunter, feared across the galaxy? Sure, you can still just walk around holding a flashlight, but at least you'll feel more in control. Revealed on Nintendo UK's YouTube channel today is the inclusion of costumes for both Zero Suit Samus and Zelda for the protagonist of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. (Fatal Frame is known as Project Zero over there.) This isn't the first time Nintendo-themed costumes have been inserted in the horror series; Fatal Frame IV featured a Zero Suit Samus and a Luigi costume. Our own Zack Furniss is working on the review, which should be ready in just a few more days. | ||||||
| Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is a great history lesson Posted: 16 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT In a sea of PS3/Xbox 360 to PS4/Xbox One ports, The Nathan Drake Collection is one of the few that actually makes sense. Many former Xbox 360 owners made the jump to PlayStation 4 this generation; as a result, they've missed out on the Uncharted franchise. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in particular was a seminal release, to the point that it has practically become synonymous with the PlayStation 3 -- maybe even the PlayStation brand in general. I took this past long weekend to re-familiarize myself with the first two Uncharted games for the purposes of this port evaluation -- but also to play Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception for the first time. And you know what? Uncharted 3 is pretty damn fantastic. Maybe even the best of the series. | ||||||
| See how Divinity: Original Sin works on consoles Posted: 16 Oct 2015 04:30 AM PDT Divinity: Original Sin was a pretty rad PC game, and now it's coming to consoles. On October 27, it will it the PS4 and Xbox One platforms. If you're curious as to how it will actually play out on consoles, this developer-led video will explain everything, including a few new features found in the Enhanced Edition. You can also play split-screen or online, the former of which is probably the most intriguing feature for me. | ||||||
| The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes has a blacklist function Posted: 16 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT I've been playing The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes for a good while now, and although I can't share all my thoughts until next week, I have noticed a few features that have been working out rather well. For starters, Tri Force has a robust online component, complete with matchmaking, friend matches, a lobby that features a beach ball minigame, and blacklisting. Yep, blacklisting is in. If you come across a player that's constantly trolling you or refuses to work with the team, you can blacklist them (up to 100 entries) and avoid playing with that person in the future. It's a great way to weed out some of the negative community members and focus on that sweet loot. Expect our full review early next week. | ||||||
| Splatoon is getting a massive update next week, with weapon balancing Posted: 16 Oct 2015 03:30 AM PDT On October 20, Splatoon is going to be updated big time. Ranking fixes will be in place so that S users will be matched up with other S users more often, and six levels will be re-balanced to prevent exploits or unfair advantages. Additionally, smaller adjustments are being made for weapon balancing, and there's even a few bug fixes along the way. You can read the entire change log under version 2.2.0 here. It's great that Nintendo is constantly adding new free content and addressing known issues like this. Nintendo of America [Twitter] | ||||||
| Tales from the Borderlands' season finale gets a trailer Posted: 16 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT I'll be the first to admit -- I was extremely skeptical about Tales from the Borderlands, especially considering how disappointed I was by The Walking Dead's second season. But I'm happy to have been proven wrong. This game looks awesome, and plenty of people I trust -- including our own Darren Nakamura -- really dig the series. Speaking of Darren, the folks at Telltale have just released a trailer for the finale with a pull quote from this very site! Even though I don't know the particulars of what's going on in this spot, I'm still excited. It seems like there are some honest stakes for fully realized characters, and you all know that is my shit and also my jam. | ||||||
| Hands-on with Valve's fantastic Steam Link streaming box Posted: 16 Oct 2015 02:30 AM PDT Although the Steam Controller and Steam Link aren't going to be available in wide release form until November 10, anyone who pre-ordered directly through Valve (myself included) is set to get them today. I immediately unpacked my shipment this morning and put them through the paces, and I'm pleasantly surprised with how the Link turned out. | ||||||
| Bungie denies paid boosts for Destiny after dataminers uncover remnants Posted: 16 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT Recently, dataminers uncovered items that seemed to indicate that paid level, subclass, and engram (loot) boosts were coming to Destiny now that the microtransaction floodgates have been opened. Bungie denied it recently on Twitter, but has taken to the weekly update blog to explain further why they did so. Evidently, those were remnants of a past concept that was going to be handled in-game with Xur, the weekly items vendor. According to the post, "the team decided that they didn't have a place in the game, and cut them from the experience." The rumor is that Bungie is going to add more cosmetic options to the game to supplement content going forward, and is moving away from paid expansions and the like until Destiny 2 -- which needs to justify its inevitable Season Pass somehow. As long as Bungie sticks to its guns, I'm okay with just cosmetic microtransactions, similar to World of Warcraft for many years until it introduced paid level boosts.
