| Very Quick Tips: Ori and the Blind Forest Posted: 09 Mar 2015 03:02 PM PDT Ori and the Blind Forest may not be the most complicated metroidvania in the world, but there are a few tough decisions to make from time to time. Here are a few quick tips to ease you in.
|
Review: Ori and the Blind Forest Posted: 09 Mar 2015 03:01 PM PDT Every so often I come across a game that just makes me smile. I mean, I play videogames almost daily because I have fun doing it, but certain titles have me grinning from ear to ear the entire journey for a myriad of different reasons. Ori and the Blind Forest is one of those games. It's just plain enjoyable from start to finish, and doesn't waste your time.
| Remember Kudo? He's now looking after a bunch of studios at Microsoft Posted: 09 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PDT Kudo Tsunoda, the guy who demonstrated Project Natal (now Kinect) at E3 2009, has been off working on Microsoft's crazy holographic headset HoloLens. He's going to keep at that but will also now lead a bunch of Xbox teams, including Rare, Lionhead, Lift London, Press Play, Twisted Pixel, Decisive Games, and the groups working on Crackdown, Scalebound, and Quantum Break. A few other management types at those studios have shuffled around, and Tsunoda says we'll hear more about Black Tusk's Gears of War "soon." (Aside: everything's always coming "soon.") "One of the things I definitely took away from Kinect is that if you're going to build a new technology or a new type of experience, how important it is to make sure the first products you ship are really based around the people who are going to use them the most," he said. So for Kinect, "core gamers and the Xbox fans." Tsunoda noted that while Microsoft handled "broad consumer products" okay, it struggled "...to deliver really great core experiences with Kinect." That's a lesson he'll "take to heart" with not only HoloLens, but "new products within Windows 10 and Xbox." Also, his Twitter avatar makes him look like he's from the future (which he probably is). | Human Head is back with mobile survival horror title Lost Within Posted: 09 Mar 2015 01:30 PM PDT Last I heard of Human Head Studios, it had taken over development on Minimum (and, prior to that, was working on Prey 2 until publisher Bethesda finally said stop). The company is now putting out a mobile horror title called Lost Within under Amazon Game Studios. Huh. That's "lost within a run-down, 'abandoned' mental institution that has a dark past," not, I don't know, "lost within a parking garage" or something. As much as this trailer covers familiar ground, I do like that bit where the stoic creepy guy inches closer when the player isn't looking. Good bit. If you're more in a reading mood and don't care to watch, the official line from Amazon is a sufficient overview as well: "Confront a legendary killer who prowls the abandoned wards. Scavenge and create makeshift weapons or conserve your resources and employ stealth tactics to sneak past the lurking horrors. When all else fails, run for your life or find a place to hide." |
Seeing ships sliced apart in Star Citizen is satisfying Posted: 09 Mar 2015 01:00 PM PDT As a casual observer of Star Citizen, I've struggled to keep up to date with the game's open development. It can be overwhelming. That's why I appreciate this recent video covering the damage model -- it's accessible. Blowing up spaceships? Yeah, cool, I'm right there with you. The real fun starts at about a minute in when entire chunks of a ship are shot off Patchwork Heroes style. (Do you remember that game? It was a gem but like all too many PSP titles, it has become largely forgotten.) You can even watch the footage in 2160p if 1080p isn't enough. Robert Space Industries wrote about this "newly optimized" destruction tech in a blog post. Great as it looks, there's work to be done. Lots more, in some cases: "Given the complexity of our largest ships, that are really like floating levels, big questions remain about hull breaches and how to portray critical damage in the vacuum of space and how this will affect players inside."
All things Tomb Raider on sale for PC (including Temple of Osiris) Posted: 09 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PDT Green Man Gaming has a slew of Tomb Raider titles on sale, from the classics to the latest Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (only $7.70 after coupon). Tomb Raider Collection, which includes basically everything except Temple of Osiris, compiles 11 Tomb Raider titles and most of the related DLC. You can also grab any of the games piecemeal. Everything listed below is a Steam key.
HBO unveils 'HBO Now,' its anticipated standalone streaming service Posted: 09 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT Today at Apple's Watch and MacBook conference, HBO announced that HBO Now, its highly anticipated standalone streaming service, is coming in April. That gist is that it allows people to cut the cord on cable if they want HBO for a fee, which is great news if you're a fan of the myriad classics on the network. HBO Now will debut in early in the month before the April 12 premiere date for Game of Thrones season five, and will cost $14.99 per month, with an offer for a free first month if you subscribe before the end of April. That's close to what people pay now for the channel with cable (my rate is $19 per month). There's a terrible catch though -- it will debut on the PC and Apple devices (like the Apple TV) as a timed exclusive. That's basically timed to last the entire season of Game of Thrones. Yikes. At the very least you'll be able to readily hook your PC or laptop up via HDMI and watch it on a TV that way if you don't feel like picking up an Apple TV. HBO Now is expected to debut on your PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, so it's totally gaming related you guys.
Kinect interference won't be an issue in Rock Band 4 Posted: 09 Mar 2015 11:30 AM PDT Harmonix wants the Rock Band 4 experience to be a social one -- a group of people together in a room using music as the driving force toward enjoyment. However, Microsoft has a once "integral" peripheral for the Xbox One that's notable for mistaking innocent chatter as prompts to use its voice commands. Last night, former Joystiq editor-in-chief Ludwig Kietzmann tweeted wondering "if singing [in Rock Band 4] in front of Kinect is going to lead to mistaken instances of it hearing 'Xbox.'" It's certainly a fair question, and nothing will kill the momentum of rocking with friends quite like Kinect trying to take over and navigate elsewhere. It could have all the makings of the current-gen "Ugh, who hit the pause button?" Fortunately, that won't be the case. We followed up with Harmonix and asked if this poses a possible problem. While the developer noted that this would make for a humorous situation, it's taking preemptive steps to ensure it won't cause trouble. In a brief statement, Harmonix said "It will be a non-issue, as we can disable voice commands during a song." It's currently unknown whether it'll only be in-game play that disables Kinect, or while in the menus too. Regardless, it's a fine step to ensure that the good times don't come to a screeching halt. Although, it'd probably only take a few mishaps before most unplugged it, anyway. @LudwigK [Twitter]
Escalator Pitch: Ska Studios talked me into a cat cafe timeshare Posted: 09 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PDT I have proven time and time again that when I have money, I do dumb things. I think that Ska Studios knew that this, combined with my strong affection for kittens, made me an easy target. Looking back, they probably couldn't wait to get on that escalator with me. One weekend a year for $50,000? Seemed like a good idea at the time. I think the change in altitude messed with my head. I wasn't thinking clearly. Straight up: I was swindled by the Silvas, wasn't I?
Behold, the confirmed amiibo for Mario Party 10 Posted: 09 Mar 2015 10:45 AM PDT Our Mario Party 10 review is coming next Monday, but for now, I can talk about select elements of it. After weeks of speculation on the supported amiibo for the newest franchise entry, I've narrowed it down by way of an in-game menu. It looks like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Wario, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, and Bowser are supported at this time. That means Toadette, Daisy, Waluigi, and Spike are not supported yet even though they are technically in the game, and we haven't heard anything back from Nintendo about the matter. Wario is going to be in Wave 4, so at the moment he's completely unplayable -- odds are a lot of you don't have a Rosalina either. As a reminder, you can use your old Smash figures, you just need to delete your Smash data. So what can you do with the things? For starters, one of the three core game modes (amiibo Party) requires at least one amiibo to even unlock, so there's that. For supported amiibo, you can scan them in once per day to unlock extra accessories for said mode, and for every other figure (such as Mega Man, Sonic, and so on), you can play a scratch-off ticket that earns you more Mario Points, the currency of the game. Mario Party 10 is easily the most aggressive use of the amiibo feature yet.
Windows 10 makes it even easier for gameplay videos to go viral Posted: 09 Mar 2015 10:30 AM PDT The latest generation in gaming has brought with it an emphasis on sharing. Screenshots and gameplay videos can be relatively easily captured and uploaded for anyone's audience to see. It's a smart way to drive interaction -- whether it's to share an unbelievable kill streak in Halo, or something as irreverent as a lunatic stabbing goats in the butt. With the announcement that Windows 10 will, in part, contribute to the "Xbox ecosystem," it really opens the door to the accessibility and possibility of sharing content. In what was called a "platform demo" at GDC in San Francisco last week, we got a first-hand look at how simple Windows 10 will make this process. Available for any game played on Windows 10 (even non-native Xbox titles) is a Game DVR that operates similarly to the "Xbox, record that" function of the Xbox One. Mapped to the Windows + G command, the DVR captures the past 30 seconds of gameplay, regardless of what's playing.
Firewatch has topless teens, meaty hands, and mystery Posted: 09 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PDT I've been firewatching out for Campo Santo's new 'exploration mystery' since hearing about the talent behind it. Artist Olly Moss, Mark of the Ninja designer Nels Anderson, and season one The Walking Dead writers and designers Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin. It's an exciting crew. And then I saw the dang thing in its trailer and had to wonder why more games don't make use of a distinct tonal color palette, instead defaulting to an obfuscating attempt at photorealism that just drowns everything out. Compare BioShock to a "realistic" shooter; the Arkham series to Shadow of Mordor. It's just nice to see someone use color, and purposefully. Because while Firewatch is gorgeous, it is also grounded. It is a story about people -- Henry and his supervisor Delilah -- and I felt that the moment I started controlling Henry. Not a blank player analogue or a camera on wheels. I saw Henry's inelegant, meaty paws stretched out in front of the screen still wearing his wedding ring despite divorce. Telling details are important.
Affordable Space Adventures is the Wii U experience I imagined in 2012 Posted: 09 Mar 2015 09:30 AM PDT When Nintendo first unveiled the Wii U, my mind raced with ideas for games that could be created with the two-screen interface. A lot of the cool stuff that the DS did could be transferred to the big screen. Better yet, titles like those that made use of Game Boy Advance-to-GameCube connectivity could surface in a more accessible format. In practice, it has taken a while for developers to do really interesting things with the GamePad. A lot of the most lauded titles would work fine without the second screen. Affordable Space Adventures is one of the few Wii U titles that feels like it could not be done on another platform. It plays to the console's strengths, finally producing the type of experience the Wii U was made for.
Hands-on with Cuphead: Equal parts charming and challenging Posted: 09 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PDT Cuphead has existed in a state of unreality to me since its E3 reveal. Despite seeing footage of the game, it remained in my mind a concept. One that I was in love with, mind. 1930s style animation. A character whose head is a cup. I love it. But because I've never played a game that was completely hand-drawn on a lightbox to look like a 1930s anime, there was always some weird disconnect between what I saw in the trailer, on-screen, and connecting it to inputting commands on a controller. This disconnect was mended when I saw a giant corner dedicated to Cuphead at Microsoft's ID@Xbox event last week at GDC. I press a button, Cuphead jumps.
Persona 4: Dancing All Night's new dancer is Kanami Mashita Posted: 09 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PDT Persona 4: Dancing All Night has an additional playable character only referred to in passing during the game, Rise's idol successor Kanami Mashita. I'm not sure why she's dressed like a clowned out Erica (or what's with the pelvis-focusing heart that suggestively reveals parts of her alternative bathing suit costume), but I'm sure she's lovely, like all Persona 4 characters. Except Yosuke and Teddie. Also bummed there's no dancing Dojima.
Beard View: Castle in the Darkness Posted: 09 Mar 2015 08:15 AM PDT This weekend I was at PAX East and had been busy shooting some videos with our lovely bearded editor-in-chief when this was uploaded, so in case you missed it, check out the latest Beard View in which I show off one of my favorite games in years, Castle in the Darkness. A game you can actually play right now with no crazy importing, as requested by commenters. If you like NES titles, Cave Story, or awesome chiptune music, you should probably give it a watch. If you like Metroidvania games, you should probably just go buy it.
There was almost ice skating in The Witcher 3 Posted: 09 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PDT Let's take a moment to imagine Geralt ice skating in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Ahh, sweet bliss. Over the weekend, senior game designer Damien Monnier told a crowd at PAX East about CD Projekt RED's canceled feature. "It was more than an idea -- it was actually a prototype. You were going to ice skate and fight, and you could slice heads and the blood goes on the ice and it's beautiful. I really liked it. It did look amazing, but ultimately -- this feature was going to be at the end of the game and introducing new game mechanics at the end of the game was quite wonky." While I agree that late-game mechanics can go awry without proper care, this sounds so deliciously over the top and could've made for an unexpected diversion. It's these sorts of quirks that stick with players long after they've put the game down. If nothing else, I'd like to see fan art. The Witcher 3 was going to include ice-skating - but it was cut [Eurogamer]
Escalator Pitch: Would you invest in Majora's Mask? Posted: 09 Mar 2015 07:45 AM PDT We're back with more Escalator Pitches from last week at GDC! Expect to GDsee more of them going up throughout the week. Indie developers make some cool as heck games, but they're not always so great at selling them. We want to them work on their pitch game until they're at Bumgarner levels and we want to take advantage of the the horrible, horrible GDC elevators that get gummed up with folks who don't know you're supposed to walk on the left, stand on the right. Here's Alex Rose. He is working on the brutal Super Rude Bear Resurrection and trying to pitch a game called Majora's Mask. Does it sounds tantalizing based on this pitch?
Try to count the bullets in Battlefield Hardline's launch trailer Posted: 09 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PDT Watch out, citizens of Los Angeles. There's a war on drugs in your city, and you just might end up as collateral damage. In Battlefield Hardline's take on the City of Angels, the forecast always calls for a fair chance of raining helicopters and scattered bullet storms. Come March 17, Visceral gives us the opportunity to fight for the overly aggressive cops or the overly aggressive drug lords. Regardless of side, it's certain that your actions will remain the same, and you'll act with reckless abandon. The only real differentiation will be whether you decide to take a donut break or not.
Posted: 09 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PDT Underneath the vision of all but the most observant of people lay the secret lives of the animal kingdom. From the meekest field mouse to the mighty lion, each is born into a world of hardship and violence, where merely surviving is the ultimate goal. Humans, with our obsession over the minutiae of modern society, can't fathom the sheer terror and panic that many animals face multiple times per day. Few forms of media attempt to strip away the ties that bind us to the sentient, and force us into the role of a wild animal. The Shelter series has attempted with minimalistic graphics and gameplay to translate what it would feel like to be a scared and lonely new mother defending and providing for her litter. This iteration focuses on a family of lynx, and although you are a predator, the vulnerability of your position is poignantly felt. But even though Shelter 2 evokes a certain amount of emotion, the package leaves something to be desired.
Here are some comparison shots for the Smash Bros. and Mario Party amiibo lines Posted: 09 Mar 2015 06:30 AM PDT I currently have access to all of the Mario Party 10 amiibo, which are arriving later this month, separately from the existing Super Smash Bros. line. To be clear, the new figures themselves are actually identical in terms of functionality, so you don't need this specific wave to access the amiibo-centric modes. It should be noted though that you can't save two different files at once (you'll have to choose between Smash or Party for each figure), and Toad, who works with Captain Toad: Teasure Tracker, is exclusive to this line. As a whole the new wave is decidedly bolder with its color scheme, evoking a classic Mario feel that I think feels better on my desk. They're also bigger in general. With this new style change comes a distinct lack of detail though, which you'll see immediately in the comparison shots in the gallery below (Party on the left, Smash on the right). My verdict? I don't think you need these unless you're a collector. Just use your existing figures and save your Smash training for your non-Party compatible amiibo. If you haven't picked them up yet though I prefer the new line over the old figures. According to a source, they are not rare and should be readily available at launch -- including Toad. See for yourself.
UK PSA: 10% off all PSN games and DLC today Posted: 09 Mar 2015 06:00 AM PDT Some of you don't like Twitter and I have no idea why. But I'm always looking out for yous, so when PlayStation UK tweeted out this 10% discount code, I knew I had to cover for my backwards friends. The code -- L5MFCEP358 -- is single use and goes inactive at the end of the UK day. It can be used on games (excluding pre-orders) and DLC in the UK PSN store. Fill your cart up with everything your heart desires (and your wallet can stomach), then enter the code for a nice little 10% discount. Today only – get 10% off on UK PlayStation Store [VG24/7]
Tales from the Borderlands Episode 2 trailer brings more bangs and booms Posted: 09 Mar 2015 05:00 AM PDT Yesterday, PAX East attendees were treated to a sneak peak of the trailer for Tales from the Borderlands Episode 2: Atlas Mugged. Today, it is available for mass consumption. Things are heating up on Pandora for Rhys, Fiona, and the gang. Hyperion seems to have caught wise of the double dealings and is firing moonshots at the group. Handsome Jack continues to speak to Rhys from the grave through the magic of technology, but he's not the only familiar face that shows up. Scooter seems worried about the protagonists, but more interesting is the appearance of Athena, whose fate after Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was left open. I'm not sure what to think about the glowy eye thing she has going on. Tales from the Borderlands: Atlas Mugged is expected to release the week of March 17.
Xbox One gets a $350 Halo: The Master Chief Collection bundle Posted: 09 Mar 2015 04:45 AM PDT Ahead of Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft is attempting to both make and sway Chief fans with a new Xbox One bundle that comes with a code for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and a box with pictures of Master Chief on it. The bundle costs $349/£349. It's a decent dip from the Xbox One's launch price of $500, which seems to have affected its early sales. I would like to know, though, if last week's major patch finally fixed Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which has been bug-plagued since its November launch. There were even curtailed plans to public beta test a patch to make sure they got it right.
Powers, debuting on PSN, is a cheesy action romp, but I'll still watch it Posted: 09 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT Powers, an upcoming TV show from Sony, has an interesting debut on the PlayStation Network on March 10 as the PSN's first real foray into original programming. Powers has been in the making since 2001 (one year after the comic series was released), when Sony Pictures first optioned the series. Needless to say, it's taking a big chance with this unique arrangement. Despite the fact that I'm not familiar with the source material, after watching the first three episodes, I'm interested enough in catching it on a weekly basis -- even if I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.
The Kinect's best game may come to PC, compliments of Swery Posted: 09 Mar 2015 03:30 AM PDT We'd seen the tweets hinting at it before, but over this past weekend at PAX East, Dark Dreams Don't Die on PC became a reality, at least for a few days. Swery, creator of Deadly Premonition and Dark Dreams Don't Die (D4) came equipped with a build of the game running on a Windows-based PC, though he would not confirm that the game would ever see full release on that platform. I'm guessing that's some that he still has to work out with Microsoft. While I see why the publisher may be reluctant to let one of the Kinect's killer apps migrate over to computers, I don't think it has anything to lose from the move at this point. Kinect has done as well as it's ever going to do. It had a good run, at least in terms of profits. Time to unchain the kids from the shackles beset them by a relatively small install base and the stigma of motion controls and let them fly through the endless skies of personal computing. This whole conversation started when I asked Swery who won PAX East this year. I figured he'd say "playing D4 on a PC wins everything," but he didn't. As it turns out, he's too humble and food-loving for that. Regardless of where this man's games turn up next, I'll be sure to do whatever it takes to play them.
ESRB reveals why Batman: Arkham Knight was rated M Posted: 09 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PDT Recently, we learned that the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight would be rated "M," a first for the series. Because of this I kind of assumed that the new game would be doing something different, but based on this ESRB description, that may not be the case. According to the ESRB, Arkham Knight features combat where enemies "cry out in pain," with "slow-motion impacts," "tank-like vehicles with machine gun turrets," and "[vehicle] wheel torture." Enemies are also shot off-screen, blood is a thing, one character is tortured on a bloody operating table, there are neon signs stating "XXX," and curse words are used. Yep, sounds like an Arkham game. Of course the rating may not be comprehensive, so we'll find out later this year. Batman: Arkham Knight [ESRB]
Killer Instinct's Hisako looks like one of the most unique fighters yet Posted: 09 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PDT Double Helix and Iron Galaxy have done a great job at turning Killer Instinct into a serviceable fighting game over the past year and a half. The newest character to join the fray is Hisako, which basically looks like the girl from The Ring. Her style is slower than most, but she is also heavily reliant on counters, which sounds interesting. Hisako will debut this month; as will the story mode.
Final Fantasy XIV's Heavensward expansion dated for June Posted: 09 Mar 2015 01:00 AM PDT Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV's massive Heavensward expansion will be released on June 23 (June 19 for pre-order access). When it arrives later this year it'll ship with a new race, new jobs, another zone, and a level cap increase from 50 to 60. Three jobs are in, including the Dark Knight (tank), Astrologian (healer), and Machinist (DPS). A new raid is also a go, focused on the Alexander summon, as are flying mounts. All of this sounds amazing. Stay tuned for more coverage. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward Out June 23rd, New Details [PlayStation Blog]
Animatronic Freddy Fazbear is creepy as all hell Posted: 09 Mar 2015 12:30 AM PDT Love them or hate them, the Five Nights at Freddy's games have been incredibly popular. Big surprise, people find slightly uncanny animatronic animals universally creepy. Now, thanks to Youtube user Dr. CreepyPasta, we get to see the next logical creepy evolution of this idea. Welcome to a physical animatronic replica of Freddy Fazbear. The animatronic replica can apparently be programmed to do a variety of actions and say a number of different phrases. Dr. CreepyPasta says he has more projects in the works, so we will just have to wait and see what he makes next. Now, I'm off to try and pretend I didn't see this monstrosity.
Driveclub getting Lamborghini DLC Posted: 09 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PDT Later this month Driveclub is going to be getting some new Lamborghini-themed DLC. The Lamborghini DLC pack, which comes with four new cars and a dedicated tour, is due out at some unspecified time later this month alongside five new trophies for the game. The included cars are the Veneno, Aventador LP 720-4 50° Anniversario, Huracán LP 610-4 and Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse. The pack is free for Season Pass holders and will be available to purchase separately for everyone else.
Freedom Planet announced for Wii U Posted: 08 Mar 2015 11:00 PM PDT Hey Wii U owners. Does an action platformer that borrows heavily from Sonic the Hedgehog, but avoids those infuriating spike walls that punish you for going fast sound interesting? Then you might be interested to hear that Freedom Planet is coming to Wii U. Already available on PC and Mac, the game is apparently coming to the Wii U eShop "soon." We don't know how soon that is, but there is a free PC and Mac demo available if you want to give it a look.
Police officer killed during GameStop robbery Posted: 08 Mar 2015 10:15 PM PDT In a tragic series of events, a Philadelphia police officer named Robert Wilson III was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at a Gamestop store this past week. Wilson, who was performing an on duty security check of the store and picking up a gift to reward his eight-year-old son for doing well at school, found himself in an intense shootout during what should have been a routine visit. According to NBC Philadelphia, two men entered the store at around 4:30 PM last Thursday thinking it would be an easy target, unexpectedly encountering Wilson in uniform. A shootout ensued, with more than 50 shots being fired in just 30 seconds. Wilson was shot several times at close range and died due to a shot to the head. Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams were later captured and charged with first-degree murder, as well as attempted murder for attacking Wilson's partner, Damien Stephenson. Hipps was shot in the leg during the shootout and Williams was caught due to returning to the store later that day.
Headbutting for goats in Toto Temple Deluxe! Posted: 08 Mar 2015 09:00 PM PDT For better or worse, sometimes you just have a hankerin’ to steal a goat. Those of us at PAX East with said craving headed over to Toto Temple Deluxe, which delivered goat-stealing gameplay in a fast-paced keep-away brawler fashion. In Toto Temple Deluxe four colorful, funny looking characters dash across a temple head first and smash into each other to steal a goat which sits comfortably atop their giant heads. Points are collected for the player who managed to capture the goat, and whilst said goat is being carried it drops eggs which contain coins for other players to pick up. The player who reaches 4,000 points first wins the round -- which is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
