February NPD proves we still love Zelda Posted: 12 Mar 2015 03:00 PM PDT It looks like we can all temper those Nintendo is doomed stories that always pop up in their forever click-bait form. According to the latest NPD numbers for February, Nintendo proved that they still have the ability to print money as they topped not only software sales, but hardware as well. Leading the software charts for February was The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, which sold a combined 515,000 copies both digitally and physically. On the hardware side, while the PlayStation 4 still outsold the Xbox One, it was actually the 3DS family that won out over everyone. According to Nintendo, all versions of the 3DS sold 395,000 units for the month. Here's a breakdown of the top 10 software sales for February:
That time Link savagely killed a monster for Vine Posted: 12 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PDT Holmes passed along this "stop-motion animation Zelda thing" by Johnny McHone earlier today and I put off watching it for far too long. Don't make the same mistake! The video borders on amateurish at times, but that ends up being a big part of the charm. Feels homemade. Funny, too. I was all prepared to feel sorry for the creature after Link mercilessly chopped off its tentacles, but it pulled some wacky Resident Evil stuff and sprouted freakish new limbs. Fair enough, Link. Then he went and ruptured its eyeball. What will Link do for the hit iPhone application Vine? Anything, apparently.
The Order: 1886 won't find safety in the London Underground Posted: 12 Mar 2015 01:30 PM PDT I was waiting for a cross-town train in the London Underground when it struck me. I've been waiting since February to find a game that would look and sound like a movie. So, I changed my plans; I rented a PS4 and a TV, and then I called you. "I need you to pretend that you want to play The Order again," and you agreed to. I want so badly to believe that this trailer is for DLC. And, I don't doubt that that's the word to the extent that it's absurd. I grew chest hair and cleaned my gun, using lycans as my stand-in. The script, it called for moustaches but I couldn't grow one, so we faked it. The marker snapped, and I yelled "quiet on the set!" and then called "action!" Then, I played The Order in a style Clark Gable would have admired. I thought it classic.
| Driveclub update lets us know the PS+ version isn't dead Posted: 12 Mar 2015 01:00 PM PDT The dream of a PlayStation Plus version of Driveclub remains alive thanks to some careful wording in the latest March update announcement by Evolution Studios. After detailing all the changes coming for those who already bought in, those of us waiting for the promised free version got a nugget of positive news. Listed under the section of important developments after the upcoming 1.12 update, Evolution lists the following:
Does this mean the long-awaited PS+ version is coming soon? Don't hold your breath. For a look at what else is changing, check out the list below: |
A Titanfall sequel is coming and surprise, it will be multiplatform Posted: 12 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PDT At last, it looks like PlayStation 4 owners will finally be able to see Titanfall. That initial sting of denial will be wiped away with a second installment as IGN confirmed the same information we already knew -- even if it wasn't official. Respawn founder and CEO Vince Zampella told IGN that they are indeed "working on a sequel" and that it will be "multiplatform." As for actual details, we haven't gotten anything yet. However, there may be some good news on the potential DLC and map packs front. When asked about a potential change in their DLC model, Zampella said, "I think having the maps like that in packs, it does split the community and it makes it harder for matchmaking, it's messy. Yeah. I don't know we won't do it again, I can't say that for sure, but the idea would be to do something different." He said he liked the idea of Evolve releasing maps for free to keep the community together, so we'll see if this is what actually happens. OK Sony fans, time to stop hating on Titanfall and embrace your mech future. Titanfall 2 Confirmed, Coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC [IGN]
Mortal Kombat X doesn't lose any brutality in its mobile version Posted: 12 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT Just because it's running on devices that aren't as powerful as PC or consoles, doesn't mean that Mortal Kombat X tones down the violence for its mobile version. No, judging by this gameplay video, all the skull-crunching, eye-gouging, and face-halving is still very much intact. However, undoubtedly, the skill required is scaled back. Remembering countless combos seems to be swapped out for quick swipes and rapid taps. It's probably won't prove as satisfying, but how else are you going to get your Mortal Kombat fix while on the bus?
Lineage II keeps on keeping on with latest expansion announcement Posted: 12 Mar 2015 11:30 AM PDT The MMO genre is not what it used to be. That doesn't mean, though, that there still aren't thousands of players that enjoy the endless farming and miles of endless walking that these games provide. With all the other options at our fingertips, who wouldn't want to slowly grind their life away? Lineage II, which will celebrate it's 11th anniversary in the North America region this April, refuses to give up the fight as NCSOFT has announced their latest expansion for the game titled Infinite Odyssey. Infinite seems pretty apt considering L2 will most likely live on for infinity. Along with new hunting zones and a new raid boss, the expansion will include the introduction of a new race called the Ertheia. For those that are really into it, there is even a Name that Skill contest currently going on that will allow players to name five new high-end skills. The contest is running until March 31 and winners will be announced on April 7. Giving the Internet the chance to name your skills? What could possibly go wrong?
Halo PC community's latest Combat Evolved remaster is its magnum opus Posted: 12 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PDT Halo: Combat Evolved has an extremely dedicated PC community, especially with regard to mods. Because Microsoft won't remaster the game, these people have taken it into their own hands to do it themselves. Known as the Custom Map Team, these fans have worked for years to recreate iconic Combat Evolved levels with a bit of a twist. The most recent addition is The Silent Cartographer: Evolved. Not only does it come with upgraded visuals, but it's been re-imagined by the team. This means that there are alternate paths, weapons and enemies from later games, and plenty of secrets. Basically, the creators did everything they could to make it a better level, while still staying true to the original The Silent Cartographer. This remake is particularly noteworthy because the Custom Map Team acknowledges that it's the last map for a lot of the contributors. It's a project that's been on-going for almost three years, and it's finally done. Now all that's left is to throw a Grunt Party to celebrate.
Terraria: Otherworld's GDC trailer drops more hints about its alternate universe Posted: 12 Mar 2015 10:30 AM PDT When Terraria: Otherworld was announced, it was difficult to tell from the trailer what makes it stand apart from its big brother Terraria or futuristic half-cousin Starbound. Developer Re-Logic's description gave some insight, suggesting a stronger strategy component. I think I can see that in the trailer above, taken from GDC 2015. Those weird monoliths we saw last time all have crystals powering their unknown functionality, and local creatures seem to want to destroy the structures, and the player can set up defensive turrets to protect them. The crystals look like they play a big role, with one section shown as an entire cavern made of the material. Watching closely, the machines appear to be expunging a purple tint from the land. Perhaps it's like Terraria's Corruption, but with a more interesting means of removal. We still need some more official details, but that's what I see in the above trailer. Is there anything you think I got wrong or missed?
PSA: Valkyria Chronicles (PC) for $6.80, which is real cheap Posted: 12 Mar 2015 10:15 AM PDT Hey. Because I'm an idiot, I missed out on picking up Valkyria Chronicles for $8 two weeks ago. Because I am handsome, cool, talented and have nice eyes, Valkyria Chronicles is now on sale on the videogame website GamersGate for just $6.80, which, if my math is correct, is like five bucks cheaper. I finally finished replaying Resident Evil 4 on PC and am looking for another warm blanket of a game to play to forget my woes and this is it. Even though I bought and own three copies of the game on PS3. And now I don't have to pay the $20 it costs on Steam at the moment. Hooray.
The Swindle perfectly balances roguelike mechanics with approachable gameplay Posted: 12 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PDT On my last day covering PAX East, I had the chance to sit down with the inimitable Dan Marshall from Size Five Games to have a look at his gorgeous, stealthy, steampunk-centric burglary simulator The Swindle. We’ve posted about Dan’s promising roguelike on a few occasions, but now that I’ve had some hands-on with the game, I’d like to share my impressions. To quickly get you up to speed, Marshall’s title is centered around the act of breaking into procedurally-generated buildings, remaining unseen in them for long as possible, and grabbing as much dosh as you can before making a daring escape to your waiting airship; or, like I did (much to Dan’s amusement and my chagrin), die repeatedly in the attempt.
Ori and the Blind Forest is great, experience one of the best parts now Posted: 12 Mar 2015 09:30 AM PDT There's not a lot of negative criticism that can be levied against Ori and the Blind Forest. It just does everything so well. Tight platforming, unique mechanics, a gorgeous aesthetic -- everything melds together to make an absolutely superb game. One aspect that shouldn't be overlooked is the fantastic soundtrack. In fact, if you want to isolate just that, oh boy, do I have good news for you. Ori's music is available in a variety of different places. Major Nelson's shared a few outlets to pick up Ori's OST. If you're not the payin' for stuff type, go with Spotify. I hear streaming music is all the rage with the kids these days. Maybe they'll think you're super neat, and they'll ask you to pick them up some smokes from the Wawa. That's how you'll know you're in with the cool (albeit significantly younger than you) kids. Ori and the Blind Forest Original Soundtrack [Major Nelson]
Ex-Nintendo exec tells Samus to 'consider going indie' Posted: 12 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PDT Dan Adelman worked for Nintendo for many years, and was one of their unsung heroes for much of that time. While he has consistently voiced affection and respect for the company, he did end up resigning last year, in part because he felt like his role at Nintendo wasn't what it used to be. Now he's working on marketing and PR for a game called Axiom Verge, a game that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime once said looked like Metroid. Samus Aran has worked for Nintendo for many years, and has been considered one of their most iconic characters for much of that time. While she has consistently garnered affection and respect from fans of the company, she hasn't had a game of her own since the year 2010. Many feel that her role at Nintendo isn't what it used to be. Now she's appearing in regular installments of the Smash Bros. series, but she'd much rather be in Axiom Verge, a game that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime once said looked like Metroid. If I didn't know better, I'd think that Dan Adelman was Samus Aran's secret identity. If putting on glasses and civilian clothes is all Superman needed to do to trick us into thinking he's Clark Kent, then why couldn't Samus do the same thing? If it weren't for this video, I may still believe that was the case. The similarities between these two "Nintendo characters" are hard to shake, though when it comes to the discussion of "going indie," their differences definitely start to show.
Homewreckers wanted for the upcoming Rainbow Six Siege PC alpha Posted: 12 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PDT I'm a total newcomer to the Rainbow Six series but I quite liked Siege's wall-blasting ways at E3 last year. Not so much for the tactical possibilities that destructible environments enable as the simple human desire to punch holes in someone's home (and maybe rescue a hostage while I'm at it). Ubisoft is preparing for a closed alpha test for Siege in North America and Europe that PC players can sign up for now. There's a "short survey" involved as part of the application process and, here's the part where some of you groan, an active Uplay account is also required. Uh huh. System requirements for the alpha build can be found here in this FAQ or below.
Ubisoft does a physical Vita release of Child of Light/I'm not sure why, it doesn't seem right Posted: 12 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PDT Child of Light was late to Vita, coming in July. And yet, what's this, a North American physical Vita release in March? For North America originally this release was not planned. Rhyming couplets with good rhythm is hard.
Bravely Second's trailer shows off additional features Posted: 12 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PDT The latest Bravely Second: End Layer trailer has been making the rounds, and the Japanese-language clip is full of additional features that can be found in-game, such as the Brave and Default commands, job classes, battle mechanics, and more. While the Bravely Default sequel is marching bravely toward an April 23 release in Japan, there's been no word yet on an official localization. Granted, it took quite a while for us to see Bravely Default in English, so it might be the same case with this one. In any case, one can hope. Check out the trailer above and lament your lack of Japanese knowledge, like I did. Or laugh at me for my pitiful attempts at becoming bilingual and learning Spanish instead of Japanese in high school, because we didn't have Japanese class. Bravely Second systems trailer [Gematsu]
Fire Emblem amiibo support for Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. doesn't add much Posted: 12 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PDT Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is out, and you can read the full verdict here on the core game. Of course, where there is amiibo functionality to be covered, I'll be there. Right now, Code Name supports four total figures -- Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina. As of this week only the former two are actually out, with the latter pair launching in April. As such, I'll be covering Marth and Ike here, and cover Robin and Lucina at a later date. Got it? Good.
Homefront: The Revolution delayed into 2016 Posted: 12 Mar 2015 06:30 AM PDT Homefront: The Revolution, the sequel to 2011's Red Dawn: The Game, has been delayed into 2016, according to publisher Deep Silver. Deep Silver acquired the Homefront rights from Crytek in 2014. Crytek acquired the Homefront rights from a defunct THQ in 2013. The Revolution was being developed by Crytek UK -- formerly Free Radical (TimeSplitters) -- until Crytek's financial troubles (such as not paying its workers) led the company to flip Homefront and its Crytek UK studio. Dambuster is Deep Silver's third internal development studio and of its 126 staff, "the vast majority...are veterans of Crytek UK." As to the delay, Deep Silver explained, "We are giving the team every opportunity to turn Homefront: The Revolution into a best-selling title, and have set a 2016 release date to provide them the time they need to achieve this," which, well, haha.
We Happy Few's bright exterior hides a dark secret Posted: 12 Mar 2015 06:00 AM PDT For a while, the general aesthetic in games was dark and grimy, with muted colors to convey dismal feelings. The more recent counterculture of color was welcomed, bringing happiness back to the medium. But a funny thing happens when colorful palettes are taken a step too far. Add too many big smiles, bright eyes, and soothing pastels, and the mood turns from joyful to creepy. We Happy Few cashes in on this uncanny area past whimsy. Its world is so bright that it feels alien. Indeed, behind the vivid color of Compulsion's newest creation is a dark place. It may be pretty, but it is eerier than any run-down mansion on a stormy night.
Evolve's free map DLC is doing that 'Xbox first' thing Posted: 12 Mar 2015 05:30 AM PDT It's great to see free maps in a multiplayer-centric game like Evolve, but -- there just had to be a but -- timed platform exclusivity? Considerably less good. When the maps Broken Hill Mine and Broken Hill Foundry debut on March 31, they'll only be available for Xbox One. Following that initial release, PC and PlayStation 4 players will be able to download the pair on April 30. "Mine" is set in a cave system whose hidden pathways should thoroughly confuse untrained hunters (like me!), while "Foundry" is more of an industrial zone containing crates of bohrium that the beast can consume (though doing so will make enough noise to give away its position). If Turtle Rock Studios can keep a steady flow of new content going, there may still be a decently active player base by the time I dig into Evolve. Speaking of which, I need to check in on Titanfall. Two new free maps coming to Evolve [Evolve]
SMITE's Xbox One alpha is off to a great start Posted: 12 Mar 2015 05:00 AM PDT There aren't a whole lot of fully featured MOBA games on consoles. While a handful of them exist, some faring better than others, there's going to be a bigger push this year with games like SMITE and Gigantic heading to the Xbox One. Although I heartily enjoyed my time with SMITE on PC, I didn't stick around for an extended period of time, instead opting to head back to League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm. That may change when SMITE hits Xbox One later this year, based on what I've played of the alpha build.
Guilty Gear Xrd's newest patch will address the netcode Posted: 12 Mar 2015 04:30 AM PDT Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- is still going strong, and Arc System Works has a new patch in the works, primarily to improve the netcode. Additionally, cross-platform play will be stabilized, and a few other bugs will be fixed including trophy problems, DLC system voice issues, and a few typos. Beginner lobbies have been increased, and the system will now kick you if you've been idle for more than 15 minutes -- thankfully, a voice will now come on when it's your turn to notify you. Arc is teasing another patch later this year that will bring balance changes and more online improvements. GGXRD [Arc System Works via Sourenga]
Nintendo Download: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Posted: 12 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT Although the 3DS is the highlight today, the Wii U is getting a few titles this week. In addition to Trine Enchanted Edition, you'll also find F-Zero GP Legend, Don't Touch Anything Red, and My Style Studio: Notebook. The obvious main event for the 3DS is Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. tomorrow, in addition to 3D Out Run, Monster Combine TD, Music On: Electric Guitar, and Shanghai Mahjong. Themes include Balloon Fighter, Mega Rayquaza, Pokemon Friends, and Pokemon Hanafuda -- I'm interested to see what that last one looks like. In terms of sales, WayForward is holding a blowout initiative until March 19, and other big discounts include Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Dual Destinies, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Code of Princess, and Etrian Odyssey IV.
Nintendo debuts new Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker amiibo-centric video Posted: 12 Mar 2015 03:30 AM PDT Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker's amiibo support was shrouded in mystery for a while. Even at launch it wasn't clear what amiibo actually did, but over time Nintendo revealed their plans. Not only could you earn extra 1-Ups by way of figures (lame), but the Toad amiibo adds "extra pixel Toads" to find scattered about stages. Here's the rub with the pixel-dudes -- it looks like you'll get to tap the figure down on the GamePad, then you'll have 10 seconds to find it in a level, and make sure it's visible on the screen to "claim it." That's a really small feature, but if it appears in every single stage it's a good enough reason for me to go back. Japan is getting a badass bundle (check it out in the gallery below), but nothing has been announced for any other region.
Harmonix Music VR could supplant Audiosurf for me Posted: 12 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PDT Audiosurf is more than seven years old now (wow), but it still holds a place as a desktop icon on my computer. I still play it regularly. The thing is, I almost never play it on any setting other than Casual with Mono. It is the thing I go to when I want to turn off my brain for a bit and just enjoy some music along with some pretty colors. I got a chance to try out Harmonix Music VR at PAX East this past weekend, and it looks like it could fill that role perfectly. There is even less to concentrate on, but the step into virtual reality makes it more engrossing. I could see myself coming home from work, putting on the headset, and just chilling with it to decompress.
Mega Man Unlimited gets super tough Omega bosses and more Posted: 12 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PDT Your eyes do not deceive! Tony Ponce is writing about Mega Man on the front page! I want to talk today about Mega Man Unlimited, the fan game I reviewed nearly two years ago that made me cry manly tears. You remember that tasty jam, right? I still think about it often. Hell, I replay the soundtrack in my car like it's a religion! But while the world has gone back to tsk-tsking Capcom for its continued mishandling of little boy blue, Unlimited lead designer Philippe "MegaPhilX" Poulin has continued to tweak his baby with bug fixes and all-new features. I wrote about the update that added an easy mode a mere month after the game first launched, but several further updates have popped up since. The reason you haven't heard about those others until now is because... well... I wasn't around to tell you! Have no fear, brothers and sisters! I am here once more! And what's this? It looks like MegaPhilX pushed out Version 1.2.2 just a week ago, and it's packed with peanuts!
Mortal Kombat X brings back some familiar faces for Story Mode Posted: 12 Mar 2015 01:00 AM PDT It's been less than a year since its reveal, and we're already rapidly approaching the release of Mortal Kombat X. After its predecessor essentially rebooted the franchise with a return to 2D-style combat, many fans got a newfound love for the series. And though Mortal Kombat (2011) took some liberties with the lore, as it was both a reboot and sequel simultaneously, it left off in a place that had fans anxious to see what could happen next. Lucky for you, Destructoid just got a taste of what's in store. During GDC week, Warner Bros. Interactive held a special hands-on session with the first chapter of Story Mode, along with a sampling of the versus mode and upcoming mobile game app. Though I've played quite a bit of this series in my time, I knew I could use some help discussing the franchise's lore and history. So I decided to bring along Dtoid's resident Mortal Kombat expert Abel Girmay, who's already played quite a bit of MKX, for a back-and-forth discussion about the game and how Johnny Cage has still got the stuff.
PS4 Update 2.50 brings suspend resume and button remapping Posted: 12 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PDT Details about the upcoming PS4 firmware that adds suspend and resume functionality have just been released. The firmware is being dubbed "Yukimura" which could refer to a Japanese family name or various people including a samurai. Not only does this update add the long promised suspending and resuming of games, but also accessibility options including console wide remapping of buttons for the DualShock 4. This will come as great news to many people with disabilities and I'm certain it is a welcome change for our friends over at the AbleGamers charity. Also added is 60fps for Share Play and Remote Play, uploading to Dailymotion and other features you can check out at the official Playstation Blog. Screenshot by @Cheesemeister3k [Twitter]
Party with Destructoid at EGX Rezzed! Posted: 11 Mar 2015 09:00 PM PDT Morning, Brits. Thousands will be heading to London's Tobacco Dock later for EGX Rezzed's preview day; are you one of them?
