The joy of painting: Splatoon's Splat Roller looks fun

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PDT

Not to just gush about Splatoon every darn time we bring up the game and its delightful nonsense, but I'm feeling this short, no-frills showcase of the Splat Roller weapon. Got 20 seconds to spare?

The oversized paint roller can be used to quickly spread ink across the battlefield or run over opponents, but if you're unable to close the gap, it's also got a medium-range projectile attack.

As someone who finds enjoyment in painting walls and the like (but not decks; never decks), I'd be so down for a mode that just let's you screw around and paint entire levels at your leisure.

The Homestuck videogame isn't as dense as the comic

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT

You know where you stand when it comes to Homestuck. Even if you don’t know what Homestuck is, you’ve already taken a side. The infamously dense webcomic has more than its fair share of rabid fans, avid haters, and egregiously apathetic bystanders, to the point where author Andrew Hussie was able to easily Kickstart a Homestuck game, earning an amount of cash that would stagger the wildest imagination.

Well, okay, it was closer to $2.5 million (and my imagination is pretty wild) but that’s still a lot of money for a lot of unknown variables. The Homestuck Adventure Game (now known as Hiveswap) was one of the first big Kickstarter success stories. Now, almost three years later, we get to see where all that cash went.

Harebrained Schemes nails it once again with Necropolis

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 11:30 AM PDT

As I explored the opening area of Harebrained Schemes' third-person action roguelike Necropolis at PAX East 2015, I discovered an inviting treasure chest. Upon opening it, I realized too late that I wasn’t alone in that first room. While my back was turned, a shadowy, crystalline figure called the Grine had seized the opportunity to launch a flurry of attacks at my unprotected rear; all the while, my character stood there helplessly locked in place throughout the chest’s opening animation.

It was at this point in the Necropolis demo that the game made complete sense to me. In that singular moment I felt as though I’d been here many times before. Not here in the literal sense of playing the demo beforehand, of course, but here in that the game’s unspoken rules were so familiar to me that it felt like coming home. And what a treacherous home it is.

It’s become passé to compare titles to the Souls games, but in this particular instance, I feel the comparison is completely justified. Anyone familiar with From Software's work will know, almost instinctively, what will be expected of them when they pick up the controller. The control scheme (light and heavy attack buttons, shield, jump, and evasion) and stamina system are very much in line with what we're used to in those titles, with a couple of notable deviations.

Necropolis doesn't feature a parrying system, for starters. Instead, your character can use their equipped shield to perform a bash maneuver as well as block incoming attacks. However, stamina is drained when doing so and should be used sparingly in battle. For example, if you try to hold off enemy attacks with the shield indefinitely, you'll soon wear yourself out as your enemy lands each attack, thereby leaving your character susceptible to taking damage.

Mother original arranged soundtrack is being printed on vinyl

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 11:00 AM PDT

Mother (aka EarthBound Zero) had a very peculiar official soundtrack which, until now, has never been released outside of Japan. Rather than taking music straight from the game, composers Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka (Metroid, Kid Icarus) and Keiichi Suzuki (Tokyo Godfathers) went with a fully orchestrated soundtrack, which even contained some English vocals from lesser-known European musicians including Catherine Warwick, Louis Philippe, Jeb Million, and the Saint Paul's Cathedral Choir. It's a very bizarre album, but there's something special about its weirdness.

Well, it seems a record label named Ship to Shore PhonoCo. has obtained the licensing rights to the album and have launched a Kickstarter campaign to officially release the Mother OST outside of Japan, and on vinyl no less! If the Kickstarter does well enough, Ship to Shore might consider releasing the soundtracks for other videogames on vinyl as well, maybe even the rest of the Mother series.

The Kickstarter offers some really cool incentives for backers, including art prints, exclusive translucent red vinyl records, and a liner notes booklet with some "behind the scenes" information about the album from the original artists. Excess funding will go towards printing more copies so more fans can get their hands on the soundtrack.

This unique, kitschy album would be a great addition to any EarthBound collection. It's also worth noting that while the main album contains orchestrated music, the D-side will contain a track titled "The World of Mother," a medley of music straight from the Famicom game, so you can have cheesy vocalized tracks and wonderful 8-bit goodness all on one record.

This War of Mine DLC exists solely to help the kids

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 10:30 AM PDT

This War of Mine takes a look at a part of conflict that videogames rarely explore: that of those who aren't fighting for a side, but just fighting to survive. It's a harrowing experience, one of the heaviest of 2014 to be sure.

With a small add-on, developer 11 bit studios aims to help those that its game depicts in desperate situations. Absolutely all revenue from the DLC will be donated to War Child, a charity that provides assistance to children in war-torn areas. The DLC comes at $1, $10, and $20 levels -- all contributions unlock the same content, the only difference being how much you feel like donating.

The add-on provides street art throughout This War of Mine for the player to find and unlock. Artists M-City, Gabriel "Specter" Reese, SeaCreative, Emir Cerimovic, Fauxreel, and Mateusz Waluś all contributed. They're doing a little bit to try to make the world a better place for those who have it unimaginably tough; won't you, too?

Sentai studio sim Chroma Squad coming April 30

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Finally! Last we heard, Power Rangers' Saban was all bent out of shape about Chroma Squad and trying to either claim royalties on it or keep it from releasing. What a bummer that was for the XCOM-y mix of strategy game and management sim.

But Behold Studios seems to have gotten through it and Chroma Squad is releasing on PC, Mac, and Linux on April 30 -- "we mean it this time!" Cool. I'm excited to see how it's progressed since I played last year and how the overall balancing and scope turned out. I can always use a new turn-based strategy game.

Heat Signature is the best game I saw at GDC

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 09:30 AM PDT

Gunpoint ultimately had very little to do with guns. It was a smartly designed puzzler with an immensely satisfying core set of mechanics and witty dialogue. But the title never came into play; pointing guns at people always went poorly for me. Tom Francis, the writer-turned-designer behind game, promises his new project will have a relevant name. From what I played at GDC, that seems to be the case.

It’s called Heat Signature, it’s Hotline Miami meets FTL, and it’s easily the best thing I saw all show.

Holy hindsight! Five series that should have been on Wii

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 09:00 AM PDT

By the end of 2014, Xbox 360 had slid past Wii to become the best-selling seventh generation console in the US. While a fantastic achievement for Microsoft, this event also punctuates the drastic shift in Nintendo's market dominance. Where once Wii was on track to become the best-selling dedicated gaming console of all time, it's now all but forgotten.

There are various reasons why history played out the way it did, but at the end of the day, it's all about the games, and Wii's library had some pretty glaring holes. To be fair, there were a lot of fantastic games on Wii -- Nintendo itself published some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful titles in company history, while several third parties were able to ride the wave to good fortune.

Sadly, the industry at large didn't support Wii in a manner befitting of a market leader, resulting in a legacy of wasted potential. Had these publishers done a better job in leveraging their biggest brands on the little white box, the current gaming landscape could have been much different.

Team Fortress 2sdays: Between 2Fort with Vinnie Parisi

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 08:45 AM PDT

It’s been far too long, but we’re back! Joining us on the fort next week is Indie Game Magazine editor in chief Vinny Parisi. For those who don’t know, Between 2Fort is an interview show held on the infamous 2Fort map.

There’s a twist however, as both myself and Vinny will have to dodge fire from everyone else during the course of the entire interview. If you have any questions for Vinny, feel free to post them below. The show will go live on March 21 on Streamtoid’s hitbox channel (hitbox.tv/streamtoid) at noon EST / 9am PST and be posted on YouTube within the week after.

Cliffy B's sci-fi shooter Project BlueStreak running in Unreal 4

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PDT

Clifford Bleszinski (Gears of War, Unreal Tournament) is working on a new sci-fi arena shooter, code named BlueStreak. While it still doesn't have a final name, it does have an engine. Bleszinski's Boss Key studio is working with Epic and Unreal 4.

Last week, during GDC, Epic announced Unreal 4 would be (sort of) free to use.

Bleszinski's partnership with Epic makes sense given his intimacy with the Unreal engine.

Final GDC DLC launches with massive bugs, Mountain Dew shotgunning

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Destructoid has launched its fifth and final GDC Daily Lunch Chronicles and interim cameraman Mike Cosimano again screwed up the sound. Instead of letting him get cute with ragtime music and title cards like last time, we're just putting it up, because I still think it's funny despite the painful, ear boring audio quality.

Your boy Steven (it me), Brett Makedonski, Kenny Redublo, and new guest PCWorld's Hayden Dingman all get together to put a final wrap on the show.

If you really can't stand the sound, fast forward to 6:00 for the main reason you should watch it, which is Brett Makedonski living up to his nickname "Wett Brett."

The DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition changelog is extensive

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 07:45 AM PDT

With DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition out now, fans of the series have another title to keep them satiated till the next one is ready. As you've likely read, Chris gave his impressions of the game earlier. He was impressed with the changes and upgrades made to the game, but was still ho-hum about the story. Which is fair -- it's certainly abrasive and in-your-face.

For me, I was a big admirer of DmC when it came out, and experiencing the Definitive Edition back in January was a total joy. But one thing many fans have been asking for since its debut was a specific rundown of what was changed and upgraded.

Capcom gave Destructoid an advance look at the complete changelog, featuring well over six pages of notes, revisions, and other augments made to the title. For the hardcore DMC fan looking for a complete rundown of what's what with DmC DE, this is something you'll want to see.

Remember Me 2 is written, Capcom just has to give the nod

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PDT

French developer Dontnod may be working on episodic teen drama Life is Strange right now but it hasn't forgotten its roots. In fact, it's eager to get back there. But first, Dontnod needs the greenlight from Capcom.

Speaking with Siliconera, creative director Jean-Maxim Moris said "We know what we would do for Remember Me 2. The main story has been written, we know what we would add to the recipe. We know what we would fix. It's a game that's ready to be made, but that decision is Capcom's to make."

However, Moris added that the studio is still focused on Life is Strange. It's currently working with Square Enix to figure out whether that property will run into a second season, or if it'll conclude after one. He elaborated that "It's not in the works, but [the team's] started the very early stages of conception."

Dontnod might do well to revisit Remember Me a bit down the road. It's the sort of polarizing title that has a cult following, but most agree that it never fully came together. With a bit more experience under their belt, it could very well reach the potential that many hoped for the first time around.

Review: Cities: Skylines

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PDT

The connection between the design and implementation of the sidewalks and streets we use on a daily basis requires a huge mental leap for me. Walking down the cobblestone in my city and looking up to see the sky framed with highrises inspires my sense of awe. It’s as if they represent humanity’s dominion over the natural world, and seem to stand as a testament to our species’ tenacity. It’s as if their monolithic forms are a raised fist against all the devastation and hardship we’ve experienced as a whole since we left the fertile crescent over 60,000 years ago.

To make a city of our own, to imitate and create the spaces in which we live our lives is quite alluring. The nurturing and planning that goes into creating your own little virtual metropolis is naturally stimulating to the desire to solve problems that most of us find so innate. For more than a decade, Maxis’ SimCity series was the go-to for a city-building fix. However, the changes in the latest iteration of the series were very unpopular, and begged the question, “Is the city-building simulation genre dead?” Cities: Skylines answers with an emphatic, “No,” and goes beyond what even the venerable SimCity series had to offer.

Escalator Pitch: Armello dev goes all in on escalator etiquette

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 06:45 AM PDT

Indie developers make some cool as heck games, but they're not always so great at selling them. We want to them work on their pitch game until they're at Bumgarner levels and we want to take advantage of the the horrible, horrible GDC elevators that get gummed up with folks who don't know you're supposed to walk on the left, stand on the right.

While we've had developers pitching classic games like Sonic 2 and Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, in order to really get that creative brain juice pumping, we also asked folks to pitch some non-game things. Armello's Trent Kusters pitched us on the very idea of escalator etiquette, which spawned this series in the first place. It's getting meta.

Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015 washes up on Steam Greenlight

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 06:30 AM PDT

Laura first reported on Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015 last week, but we didn't know many details about the game yet. A few days ago, the dad-showering simulator went up on Steam Greenlight with a trailer and new info, awaiting the approval of the gamers.

The game will feature three dads, four different game modes, a free soundtrack, and SECRETS! What secrets could lie in a shower room filled with dripping wet dads? Nobody knows for certain, but the possibilities fill me with excitement.

The developer has also been reveling in the negative press he's been receiving since the game appeared on Greenlight, with "endorsements" from the likes of Jim Sterling and Total "That's it, I hate videogames" Biscuit. Personally, I think it looks hilarious. I can't wait to shower with my dad!

3D Realms: Bombshell is the only one who could kick Duke Nukem's ass

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 06:00 AM PDT

3D Realms is keenly aware of what players know it for. Sure, there are plenty of titles in the publisher's history that should stand out, but for all intents and purposes, the company might as well re-name itself The Duke Nukem Guys.

In the case of its next project, Bombshell, 3D Realms is absolutely looking to distance itself from the Duke tropes -- at least as far as this game is concerned. Despite a lot of thematic similarities (oh hey, aliens took over again), Interceptor and 3D Realms have created a hero in Bombshell (Shelly Harrison is her proper name) who is a polar opposite from Duke in a lot of ways. Interceptor CEO and 3D Realms vice president Frederik Schreiber said that the two probably wouldn't get along too well. Then, Schreiber went so far as to say "Bombshell is the only one who could kick Duke's ass."

She's come a long way since our introduction to her last year. 3D Realms fully fesses up that the first take was premature. There was pressure to reveal Bombshell before it was ready. 3D Realms was trying to do something -- anything -- to take eyes off the lawsuit with Gearbox and to prove it was more than just The Duke Nukem Guys. The result was a trailer that was almost universally poorly received. That was more than enough of a cue to go back to the drawing board.

Steam Controller and FPS: PAX East 2015 impressions

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 05:00 AM PDT

One of what was seemingly the better-kept secrets at PAX East 2015, the Steam Controller, was available for hands on at the Alienware booth connected to the company's Steam Machines.

I was able to test the previous iteration of the controller the year before with Mewgenics, a game that's more mouse based, but this year, I finally got to try it out with a first-person shooter -- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

I will note that I did not try to change any configuration items for the controller, as it was the first real public hands on with the finished controllers so I'd imagine Alienware and Valve would have made sure it was set up properly.

Review: OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT

OlliOlli was a pleasant surprise. A year ago, the minimalist skateboarding game materialized out of nowhere, deconstructing the genre and distilling its essence down the barest essentials. It stripped away any traces of excess, resulting in an experience focused on eliciting trancelike states and a never-ending pursuit of high scores.

Simultaneously accessible and unfathomably intricate, OlliOlli lured players down the rabbit hole, presenting itself as an airy side-scroller just long enough to get its hooks into you before quickly giving way to something far weightier and more profound.

And now it's been topped in virtually every conceivable way with an unexpected sequel, OlliOlli 2.

Onechanbara Z2 strikes a PS4 near you this summer

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 03:45 AM PDT

Those wily scamps at XSEED have done it again! Onechanbara Z2: Chaos is on its way to North America this summer, the little localization house that could just announced.

On top of its digital release on PlayStation 4, the provocative zombie-slaying hack-and-slash will also see a limited physical run at retail. The “Banana Split” boxed edition comes with a soundtrack disc, a softcover art book, and a code for the (NSFW) ‘Strawberries & Bananas’ DLC costume set.

Another interesting item: This will be first game in the series to feature full English voice acting. XSEED also notes the original Japanese performances will be available as well.

NIS America is handling the PAL release, which the publisher says is coming to Europe this fall.

Senran Kagura 2 bounces westward this summer

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 03:15 AM PDT

Once upon a time, XSEED seemed pretty cagey about publishing the Senran Kagura games. Nowadays the plucky localization studio can't seem to bring the danged things over fast enough.

Yes, you probably read the headline where I typed Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is on its way to North America and Europe this summer. But the boss says I have to write it down here too.

The Nintendo 3DS brawler is also getting limited physical releases (which have fun names like the “Double D” and "Happy Boobs" edition) across both continents. The North American box comes equipped with a two-disc soundtrack, while Europe has a few options, the most expensive of which comes with a myriad of goodies you'd probably be embarrassed to be seen with in public.

You can check out the title's official site for more information.

Who had the sexiest Nintendo cosplay at PAX East?

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PDT

Sexy Nintendo is inevitable. Some will try to fight it, or even mock it. In doing so, they are choosing to live on the wrong side of history. I know how they feel. I scoffed along with the rest of them back when the burgeoning "Sexy Luigi Brother" lingerie genre first hit the scene, but that was years ago. Since that time, Sexy Luigi has gone from being a exotic fetish to a cultural institution. It's gotten to the point where oftentimes, being Sexy Luigi isn't enough anymore. At PAX East 2015, Sexy Luigi had to become Sexy Zombie Hunting Luigi in order to make a difference. That's how bad the Sexy Luigi over saturation situation has become.

Thankfully, Sexy Layton hasn't had to bend to our culture's current zombie fixation in order to stay fresh. Despite becoming the stuff of animated gifs and Kotaku news posts, he's still the same humbly thrusting, puzzle-loving professor he was the last time that we saw him. Only one thing about Layton has changed. He and Sexy Luke are no longer a pair. Now they're part of a threesome of uninhibited, logic-and-lust fueled erotic icons, thanks to their new sexy bowtie wearing pal  Emmy. Many have said that monogamy is the greatest emotional puzzle that any consenting adult will ever face. Leave it to Layton and company to solve that problem with style.

You can vote for Layton, Emmy, Luke, Ness, Misty, Red Pikmin, Zelda, Mario, Isabelle, Fusion Suit Samus, Zero Suit Samus, The Pikachu Pimp, and multiple other participating Nintendo cosplayers here in the comments. The winner gets a surprise!

There's a fun little Easter egg at the end of Hotline Miami 2

Review: Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PDT

For some, Hotline Miami was an existential look at the current macro-state of videogames. You were told to commit random acts of murder seemingly without remorse, and at the end, you get a bit of interesting commentary on the culture of violence. Many argued that the only way you can truly win is to not play, and it started some insightful conversations.

For me, it was a really bitchin' action puzzle game that made me constantly reinvent my strategy for each and every level. It was an experience that didn't hold my hand at every turn, and let me be as creative as I wanted while a kickass soundtrack blared in the background.

Hotline Miami 2 may not be as "profound" as its predecessor, but it's still a bloody good time.

GTA Online finally gets its long delayed Heist update today for all platforms

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 01:30 AM PDT

At long last, heists are coming to GTA Online. All you have to do is log on any of the four platforms, start the game up, and download the update -- it's weighing in at roughly 4.5GB on current-gen systems, and 1.5GB on previous generation consoles.

To access the four player co-op heists, you have to be rank 12 in Online, at which point you'll get a call from Lester. Follow the "L" mark on your map and you're good to go. If everyone has completed the current heist, you can "Trip Skip" ahead and avoid all the traveling, at a cost to bonus cash.

You'll find new gameplay types (sniping, aerial fights), weapons, and vehicles in heists. Have fun!

Severed is full of one-handed vengeance

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 01:00 AM PDT

There’s something serene about exploring a desolate place for the first time. Too often in games I find myself dropped into an environment, expected to pick up the pieces quickly to achieve a goal and left with little time to absorb.

Severed is the opposite of that. Despite playing a demo version, I felt like I lived in a different world while I walked through a desert into the remains of a home and out to a haunting forest where enemies appeared more like riddles and less like a forced mechanic. This is the kind of world I like to play in.

Caretaker gets an intriguing announcement trailer

Posted: 10 Mar 2015 12:30 AM PDT

So, I'm personally a huge Stargate nerd. As such, learning that there was an indie game in development that featured the voice of Stargate Atlantis' actor David Hewlett was pretty much enough to guarantee I'd write about this trailer.

Caretaker is an adventure game with puzzle and stealth aspects set out on a alien structure at the far end of the universe. Humanity has noticed that the stars in the sky are rapidly disappearing, so David Hewlett rushes in to work out what's going on.

Caretaker is being developer by Byron Atkinson-Jones and is due out some time in 2015 on PC, Mac, iOS, Wii U, and Xbox One. We don't know much else, but I'm excited to hear more of that silky smooth voice in my ears.

To celebrate, the National Videogame Arcade is hosting a game jam starting March 28 called JumpJam, all about making games on the theme of jumping. Running for 29 hours, some of the best entries will be showcased alongside the rest of the Jump! exhibition at Nottingham's National Videogame Arcade.

Dead or Alive 5's second ninja pack: $15 for 10 costumes

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is the fourth, final iteration of Dead or Alive 5, but that doesn't mean it can't have bugs or a $93 season pass for all the fighters' additional costumes. I guess Last Round doesn't mean "complete" or "here's all the costumes for buying this for a fourth time."

Out now is the second of three Ninja Clan packs ($14.50, or $2 each).

A sixteen costume Senran Kagura crossover pack is also slated for this month and the final three costume sets will be released on a monthly basis.

The creator, Joshua Opel, is a game developer who worked on Vigilante 8, Ghosbusters: The Video Game, Kinect Star Wars, and a bunch of other games. He wanted to make sure we told you he worked on the Rancor parts of Kinect Star Wars, not the Han Solo dancing parts.

Mevius Final Fantasy looks kind of hot, aside from the mobile thing

Though I am feeling the weird backless, capris overalls at 1:13. Wish I had back muscles like that.

Review: Resident Evil: Revelations 2: Episode 3

When I first approached Resident Evil: Revelations 2, I was fairly cautious. I had been burned many times by Resident Evil games in the past, but having played through Episode 1 and 2, most of my concerns were alleviated.

At this point, I think I can heartily recommend Revelations 2 as a whole, even if Episode 3 drags momentarily.
