Destructoid saves the world: XCOM hasn't killed any of us yet Posted: 30 Jan 2015 02:10 PM PST Last time on Destructoid Saves the World, I made strained addiction analogies (not the Kanye song) and found a work-related reason to play XCOM. Now if only I can find a work-related reason to do nothing but play Puyo Puyo Tetris for the rest of the year. A year-long charity stream, maybe? We're doing pretty well. We've a heavy in Chris Carter, a sniper in Jordan Devore. I think Wett Brett Makedonski is an assault and Kyle MacGregor a support. Holmes and Dixon might be there, too. It's been a while. I've forgotten. And now I'm sure I'm bound to get them all killed and have to start replacing them with passed on staff, or maybe you, dear viewer. Oh well. Let's continue our normal, Iron Man (no save scumming) game of XCOM (with Enemy Within expansion) and see if I can save the world with a squad full of those most suited for the job, people who write about videogames because they had one too many felonies to join the military.
| GOG.com's newest bundle slashes prices on Devolver titles Posted: 30 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST Bundle deals are all the rage these days. Although there's a ton of derivatives of the original Humble Bundle, GOG.com outshines the competitors and delivers with its Devolver Game & Watch Bundle. It's great to get such a deal on games I've actually heard of again! From now till 11:00AM GMT, you can pay $13.75 for the bundle and save a total of $125 on:
I think the games themselves are worth $14. Admittedly, I've never seen any of those movies, but I'm sure there's some entertainment to be had there. If you've already got some of this stuff, the Devolver Bundle like all GOG.com bundles also sells each item individually at sale price. |
You could have your artwork featured in Udon's Capcom Fighting Tribute Posted: 30 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST Udon Entertainment has been accepting submissions for its latest art book, Capcom Fighting Tribute. Professionals and fan artists alike are being asked to create tributes to Capcom's many fighting game franchises. Udon has done similar projects in the past, including the Street Fighter Tribute and Darkstalkers Tribute, and it looks like this compilation will include artwork for both of those franchises and more. I'd like to see some Power Stone and Rival Schools artwork myself. I'm a big fan of Udon's books. The company always puts out thick, quality books with tons of beautiful art. I still have the Okami art book, and it's one of the coolest books I own. I'd definitely recommend checking this one out if you're a fan of Capcom's fighting games. The deadline was recently extended, meaning artists will have until February 9 to submit their work, so you've got more than a week left to prepare something if you'd like to have a chance at seeing it published. I know we have some really great artists here on Destructoid, and I bet some of you could make it in the book. Udon has also been tweeting artwork from the two previous tributes to inspire artists, some of which is featured in the gallery below. Artists include Bryan Lee O'Malley, Cameron Stewart, J. Scott Campbell, Joe Vriens, Corey Lewis, Wendy Chew, Mike Krahulik, and more. Really cool stuff! You can find more information and rules about submissions over at Udon's blog.
Shorts-wearing Pikachu, red Lucario: Pokkén Tournament looks hot Posted: 30 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Now that Bandai Namco has begun testing Pokkén Tournament in Japanese arcades, the photos are flooding in -- and they're scrumptious. The Pokémon fighting game offers alternate colors for its combatants, including red Gardevoir and Lucario, and white Suicune. But none of that compares to Pikachu wearing shorts. Once this game (presumably) comes West, will we ever want to see Pikachu without shorts? I sure won't. There's no going back. Courtesy of Inside Games, we also have a crisper look at some of the support characters (Lapras!) and Pokkén Tournament's retro-as-hell controller. Also, thanks to this tweet, a curious glimpse of an aquarium-themed stage with Lugia just chilling underwater near schools of fish. コントローラーでプレイする『ポッ拳』の基本システムをお届け!その奥深さを感じたロケテレポート [Inside Games]
Posted: 30 Jan 2015 10:15 AM PST Octodad is everything a video game aspires to be: Fun. It's that simple. And the fine folks at Young Horses have proven that if you stick to this ideal (along with hours of hard work), it can genuinely pay off. According to some extensive stats put together by the development team, Octodad has brought in a total of $4,902,945 of revenue from the 459,735 units sold on all available platforms since the game's release. To see what two years and seven months of 28,208 hours of dedicated work can bring you, check out the infographic below:
| This RoboCop mod ensures I'll play The Talos Principle Posted: 30 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST Darren's review of The Talos Principle intrigued me. Even if the game had turned out poorly, a philosophical puzzler from the studio behind Serious Sam was something I just had to see. Fortunately, it's good. Eight-out-of-ten good. But I wouldn't know because I'm still procrastinating. I wish that weren't the case, now that I've stumbled on this mod from Ar2R-devil-PiNKy. It replaces the player character with RoboCop as he appeared in last year's iPhone/Android title. I think we can agree that all games, past and present, should star RoboCop. I fuckin' love that guy! | Phriday Night Phights: Phil is Dead Posted: 30 Jan 2015 09:15 AM PST Don't worry, that's the only time I'll do that with the title. Couldn't resist. I miss my old name and avatar :( No regrets at all though, just a little melancholy. Goodbye you handsome devil. May Chist carry on the legacy of terrible people with Adult Swim avatars. As some of you may have seen, I am your new Community Playdate Manager. My name is Mike Martin, but you probably know me better as PhilKenSebben. I will be taking over for the amazing Bill Platt/ChillyBilly/Cold William, who has gone on to enjoy AARP benefits, family and games. Enjoy your retirement buddy! In all seriousness, Bill is amazing and I thank him so much for all his hard work around here. I only hope to be a fraction as good as he was. See, if I set expectations low... Oh wait. Supposed to keep that part inside. Second day on the job and I'm already messing up. Dammit Mike. Moving on... As I said, this only my second day on the job. I don't have any crazy news to deliver, no wacky ideas to unveil, but trust that I am working on things. Expect to see some blogs in the next week where I will outline a couple things and ask for your input on them. I'm very keen on having us work together. I don't want to just ask you all to do something, or expect you to jump on a new bandwagon/idea. I want your input. I want to make these decisions together. That's what this all about right? Community? Yes. Yes it is. It's my favorite part of this place and why I wanted this gig. I want to help make FNF, Streamtoid and TF2uesdays more united and help them grow to even bigger levels of community interaction. Intro out the way, mission statement out the way, let's get down to games. What games would you folks like to see hosted? What games would you like to see streamed? What systems do you prefer? What kind of tournaments would you like to see? Should we start a retro night? Post your ideas below please. Let me feed off them and derive my nourishment from your juicy brain matter. Now let's play some damn games. |
2K does pay-to-win lite with Evolve app Posted: 30 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST Obviously, 2K loves money. I mean, they're a company, so that's what their primary function should be, right? Well, with video games it can be a little tricky. You can love money, but at the same, you still have to respect what made you what you are and remember who pays your bills. With the discovery that 2K has another mobile app that coincides with a console game and its progress, 2K is clearly showing us that they are testing a market in which they can use the popularity of mobile apps and their freemium-style gameplay to make a little extra scratch on the side. 2K already had MyNBA2K15 that does something very similar to what their new Evolve: Hunters Quest (on both iTunes and Android) does: What you do in the app directly affects your game.
Gaming in the Rust Belt: The story of the Buffalo Game Space Posted: 30 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST It’s not often I pause an interview because a sizzling plate of loaded fries, topped with thick diced bacon & monterey jack cheese, was just dropped in front of me, but maybe that’s because I don’t conduct many interviews in my home town of Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is the capital of bar food, all of it delicious and incredibly fattening. It has to be. If you aren’t at least a couple pounds overweight, you will probably freeze to death. Between the fries and chicken fingers, I probably gained a solid 2-3 pounds during my lunch interview with the guys behind the Buffalo Game Space. By the time the check had been paid and we began heading for the door, we probably talked about the addictive relationship Buffalonians have with bar food more than the videogame-related project we had met to discuss. I paid for lunch, by the way.
Get your knives out: A list of the best pointy objects in the business Posted: 30 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Knives in games are weird. They're either way too weak and flimsy to be any fun (the weapon of last resort you mess around with for a few moments to delay dying or before you restart from your last, hopefully ammo-rich, save), or, by design choice or fluke, they are ridiculously overpowered and silly. I still giggle whenever I come across some hype-video of a CoD player running around with a combat knife, humbling scores of modern Spec Ops soldiers all decked out in the latest in high-powered assault weaponry. Outside of trolling and goofing around, knives in games often just don't feel very good. They're not satisfying to use, or to fight against. That's why we have to celebrate the outliers. Those rare beautiful games that make it a joy, not a chore, to dive in up-close-and-personal to try to stick a piece of metal into another human being.
Wonder Boy creator working on new Wonder Boy-esque game Posted: 30 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST While covering the action-adventure platformer Flying Hamster II last year, I said that fans of the Wonder Boy / Monster World series would want to take a look, and that's even more true today. The Kickstarter may have failed, but Game Atelier found a publisher to continue development. Now, the studio is back with a major update: Wonder Boy creator Ryuichi Nishizawa is on board, and the project has morphed into something more reminiscent of its inspiration -- Monster Boy. Most notably, the protagonist is no longer a hamster. Game Atelier has also updated its art style, and says "[w]hile the game still has a huge open-world, some of the environments have changed for fitting more with the Monster World universe." Though, to be clear, Sega still owns that property. Hence "Monster Boy," not "Wonder Boy." Quick, Sega, look over there! Flying Hamster II Kickstarter backers will get a free copy of Monster Boy when it's finished. Nice. Introducing Monster Boy [Kickstarter]
Posted: 30 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST There's a nugget of a solid game here in Nihilumbra. Unlike many of the PlayStation Vita's offerings, it uses the touchscreen in a novel way that doesn't feel tacked on or forced. And the puzzle-platforming is supported well by an ethereal art style, score, and sound design. You just have to wade through a jumble of pseudo-philosophy to get to it.
Samus and Sagat: Prepping for Street Fighter V and Super Metroid II Posted: 30 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST A lot of you told me that you really liked Samus and Sagat episode one. Thank you so much! Even more of you told me that you almost didn't watch the show at all because you thought it was a cartoon. Sorry about that! To be 100% clear, Samus and Sagat is a live-action fake sitcom about Metroid's Samus Aran (Maddy Myers) and Street Fighter's Sagat (me) living as roommates. That said, we try to incorporate animation into things when we can. Luckily, we had a really good excuse to use some fake videogame graphics in this episode. This one is about the differences between being a videogame starlet and an older, well known but not particularly popular side character from an ensemble cast. Imagine a conversation between Chun-Li and Waluigi about where their careers are going. It's like that. Crap, now I wish I had made that show instead. Maybe next time.
Exploring the ghost ships of Screwfly's Deadnaut Posted: 30 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST Deadnaut is a tactical, squad-based, sci-fi horror affair from Australian developer Screwfly Studios. The title launched on Steam last November and I'm regrettably only getting around to playing it now. Its unique but minimal look is partly to blame for me passing it over in the first place; but, after finally taking the time to dig into the meat of the game, the abstract, icon-based view of the playing field is one of my favorite things about it. The game begins each time as you approach a derelict vessel adrift in space. It's your job to send in a crew of five Deadnauts -- a boarding party so-named because the likelihood of them ever returning is considered remote. It's a dangerous line of work to say the least. Vessels contain hostile life forms, some more dangerous than others, and security systems that not only pose a direct threat, but can also work to sever the lifeline that is communication between you and your team. And, if these occupational hazards weren't enough, the ship itself is falling apart and if it reaches a certain level of instability it will collapse, killing all on board.
$24 Wolfenstein, Beyond Earth, & Pre-Sequel from GMG's 2014 Revisited Sale Posted: 30 Jan 2015 05:15 AM PST GMG is launching a "2014 Revisited Sale" which includes many AAAs that are now at more than half off. Most titles are price cut by 50%, and with stacking coupons, that discount rises as high as 73% off. Some of the better deals last for 24 hours only, while others cover the entire weekend. It looks like GMG will be rotating in new deals through next week, so we'll update the list below when new stuff shows up. Our personal picks include Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition (if you don't already have the game) and Wolfenstein: The New Order -- both excellent titles.
PS4 gets Bloodborne bundle in Europe, procedural Chalice Dungeons explained Posted: 30 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Here's the lowdown on Bloodborne's procedurally generated Chalice Dungeons that are different depending on what item combination you use to summon them. It's different from Dark Souls' hand-crafted precision, but it could keep some folks playing for even more hundreds of hours. The European PlayStation Blog also confirmed a Bloodborne bundle, which is just a PS4 with a hard copy of the game packed in. Pretty neat for the Souls successor to have that much of a push, though. Of course there isn't much else big and exclusive coming out soon with which to bundle the console. The Order, I guess. Maybe North America will get an Order bundle. Why you might be playing Bloodborne for a long, long time [PlayStation Blog]
Posted: 30 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST I don't think anyone, including the game's creator, expected Gunman Clive to be such a massive hit. As an homage to retro platformers it was a joy to play, and the ridiculously cheap base price made it easy to take the plunge. Gunman Clive 2 delivers pretty much everything you'd want out of a sequel, even if it doesn't push the envelope.
Apex fighting game tournament changes venues over safety concerns (Update) Posted: 30 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST [Update: The show must go on! Apex is relocating to the Garden State Convention Center. However, all events planned for today have been cancelled.] Authorities have put Apex 2015 on hold over concerns about the venue's structural integrity. The fighting game tournament, which is scheduled to take place this weekend in Secaucus, New Jersey, is currently in limbo after fire marshals deemed the Clarion Hotel unsafe. The building was evacuated early this morning over a triggered alarm. Upon arriving at the scene, officials discovered a partial collapse in one of the hotel's ballrooms likely brought on by the winter storms pelting the region. The Apex staff is presently attempting to salvage the event, though all official activities have been suspended. The tournament, which is largely focused on Super Smash Bros., is sponsored by Nintendo. Team Apex [Twitter, Smash Boards, Alex Jebailey, Shoryuken]
Smash Bros.' Sakurai may quit game development 'if it continues like this' Posted: 30 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST Nintendo's tireless Masahiro Sakurai isn't so tireless after all and is, instead, a human being who needs better working conditions. The Super Smash Bros. creator has already said that he probably won't make another Smash because, "all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future." In his Weekly Famitsu column, picked up by Kotaku, Sakurai again discussed how development on the latest Smash wore him to the bone. He responded to a fan letter that glorified how hard Sakurai had worked on the new titles thusly, "It was very tough this time around... I doubt I'll be able to go on making games if it continues like this. But, I consider myself lucky that so many people seem to enjoy [Smash Bros.]" Someone needs a vacation. Me too. Smash Bros. Could be its Creator's Last Game [Kotaku]
| Final Fantasy XIV will get its DirectX 11 upgrade for the expansion Posted: 30 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST Ever since the launch of Final Fantasy XIV, the development team has mused on the idea of providing a DirectX 11 update for the PC edition, which would drastically improve its visual quality. While the PS4 version has near-perfect parity, the PC would be the clear superior platform with this improvement. Finally we now have a release window for DX 11 -- it will arrive this summer when the Heavensward expansion hits. The update will mostly fix the finer aspects of the graphical style (like water), and it won't be an all across the board fix. See the gallery for a better idea of what to expect. | Praise The Speaker: Bungie to fix Destiny's heavy ammo bug Posted: 30 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST Destiny has had a major bug in it since launch regarding heavy ammo. Often times you'll straight-up lose ammo due to a variety of situations, especially when you equip some of the game's best armor. It's a huge pain because the latest final raid boss requires tons of heavy to take down, but it looks like it's going to get fixed -- in February. Bungie notes that the issue is deeply rooted in the game's code, but a fix has been prepared. A number of fans are upset that "cheese" fixes that make the game easier have been prepared on a silver platter as priority one, but something that makes it more difficult or less enjoyable is on the backburner. I'm somewhere in the middle. While no one but Bungie truly understands how complicated the bug really is, the developer should have discounted the cost of heavy ammo in-game as a temporary fix until a real solution was found. Bungie Weekly Update - 01/29/2015 [Bungie] |
Borderlands 2 lead writer Anthony Burch is leaving Gearbox Posted: 30 Jan 2015 01:30 AM PST Almost five years ago, Anthony Burch went from being a Destructoid staff member to a Destructoid alumnus, moving on to work as a writer at Gearbox Software. On his personal Twitter account this morning, he announced that he would be leaving Gearbox to work on a new series for Hulu produced by Video Game High School studio RocketJump. In his time at Gearbox, Burch was the lead writer for Borderlands 2 and its downloadable content. He also contributed to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. He definitely made his voice heard through the characters on Pandora, and while there are plenty out there who resent that, I appreciate what he did to bring the Borderlands universe to life. Gearbox recently posted an opening for a writer. Though it is not certain that it is related to today's news, I can imagine that the prospect of potentially working on the Borderlands series has made the position even more attractive.
Apotheon is coming soon on PC and PS4 Posted: 30 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST Developer Alien Trap has announced the dates for the cool-looking platformer Apotheon -- February 3 on Steam and PS4. There have been a few delays within the process, but it's ready now and all set after Sony's approval process. You can check out the launch trailer above to get an idea of what to expect. As you may have heard, it will be free on the PS4 this month for all PlayStation Plus subscribers.
The Rockman Megamix manga is getting a reprint Posted: 30 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST If you're a Mega Man fan you owe it to yourself to check out the Rockman Megamix manga. There are a few volumes floating about in addition to the extended Gigamix series, and they feature some cool storylines compliments of Hitsohi Ariga. They also have a lot of neat factoids in them. That series will be getting a reprint this year in Japan, with new interviews and features. There's no word on a localization just yet, but it'll launch for roughly $30 overseas on March Rockman Megamix [E-Capcom]
Conan O'Brien plays Mortal Kombat X on a new episode of Clueless Gamer Posted: 29 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST Conan O'Brien got to play an early copy of Mortal Kombat X with football stars Marshawn Lynch and Rob Gronkowski for the newest Clueless Gamer segment, and the results were hilarious. They have some of the best reactions ever to the fatalities and close-up attacks. We get to see them try out some of the new fighters, including Ferra/Torr, Cassie Cage, and D'Vorah, as well as some of the classic fighters, like my personal favorite, Kano. I think I'm a fan of D'Vorah and her swarm of bees. You gotta love siccing bees on people! I'll admit that I'd never heard of Marshawn or Rob before, since I don't care about sports, but Marshawn is a very funny dude! He definitely stole the show; I probably laughed more from his comments than from Conan's jokes. At one point, he straight up leaves the room after a particularly gruesome fatality. "That's nasty, man. I ain't here to see that. Ya'll trippin'." I'm right there with you, Marshawn!

| Hyrule Warriors had the most successful launch of any Musou game in the U.S. Posted: 29 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST Nintendo's gambit with one of its most profitable properties seems to have paid off. Koei Tecmo's Hyrule Warriors is the fastest selling of any entry of the Musou series released in the United States. Great DLC and iconic characters have shot this game up the sales charts. A fan of the series compiled the above chart showing the Hyrule Warriors had a considerably more successful launch than its predecessors. However, historically the Musou series has seen its numbers increase throughout a console cycle, so only time will tell if Hyrule Warriors will surpass Dynasty Warriors 4's worldwide sales of over two million copies. I for one hope Nintendo and Koei Tecmo's relationship continues into more Musou games. Maybe the next entry can include characters from multiple franchises. Super Smash Battlefield perhaps? | Sega of America downsizing, relocating, and narrowing product lines Posted: 29 Jan 2015 05:55 PM PST Sega of America, like all companies, has its eyes set on becoming as efficient as possible. Today, the publisher revealed plans to take drastic steps toward that goal by streamlining through downsizing and relocation. In a notice to shareholders, Sega announced that its board of directors decided on a reform in structure that would see its San Francisco-based videogame software office closed and moved to Southern California by Summer 2015. It's also soliciting voluntary retirement to approximately 300 employees. Apart from relocation and reduction of work force, Sega's also likely cancelling some products. The specifics aren't mentioned, but the majority will come from "Amusement Businesses," and Sega intends to "narrow down product lineup, and withdraw or consolidate and downsize some of the services." It's unknown how this plan will affect software for consoles and PC. Sega lists smartphone and PC online gaming as areas under its "Digital Games" banner, and identifies the division as a growth area. However, it also intends to promote profits through "improving management efficiency" and "redistribution of management resources." We've reached out to Sega for comment and clarification as to this notice -- especially regarding whether this will result in the delay or cancellation of any already-announced games, or if this will cause any layoffs or studio closures at Sega subsidiaries. We'll update this article if we receive a response. Notice of Implementation of Structure Reform in SEGA Corporation [SEGA Sammy Group via Twitter] |
