Bravely Default mobile game doesn't look half bad

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

Bravely Default is getting a mobile game spin-off. This news either delights you or makes you want to bore out your eyes with rare amiibo. Perhaps both. Or maybe neither. Maybe you're apathetic but still clicked on this article anyway for some reason, in which case -- bless you. Keep it up!

Good lord, am I burying this lede.

Square Enix, world renowned publisher and punching bag, has disseminated the debut trailer of said mobile game, Bravely Archive: D's Report, and, well, it looks sort of nice.

The combat system seems to be a tad more simplistic than that of its 3DS counterpart, but that just goes with the territory. Mobile games being mobile games, you know. The music sure sounds as swell as ever, though. Kudos, Revo, you do good work. Never change.

Bravely Archive is slated to arrive in Japan later this month for iOS and Android devices.

Ready for Hyrule Warriors' Majora's Mask DLC? If not, grind these levels

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST

I'm continually amazed and frightened by how much mileage I've gotten out of Hyrule Warriors. This game is massive without DLC, and with it, god help us all -- it just keeps going.

After regularly playing since launch in late September, I've managed to clear the first Adventure Mode map, most of the Master Quest map, and around half of the Twilight Princess map. But just when I feel like my progress is coming together, more content drops. Not that I'm complaining.

There's still the Majora's Mask DLC ($7.99 standalone, or bundled with the other DLC packs for $19.99) on February 5. We got our first real look at that content -- Young Link, Tingle, three new costumes, and an Adventure map -- during today's Nintendo Direct. It's gonna be good.

I'm ready to start rocking Tingle, but if your current favorite characters aren't as leveled-up as you'd like them to be, the Twilight Princess map can help. In particular, the "Divisive Plan" missions (locations here) are ideal for grinding experience points. You'll face off against a single warrior, like Darunia or Fi, who will split apart into multiple clones as you deal damage. More clones equals more XP. Just be sure to take advantage of their elemental weakness (e.g., Water beats Fire)!

Moonman looks like the appetizer to a Starbound entrée

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

It feels like Starbound has been in development for a long time now. Sure, it's playable, but it is not complete. Perhaps a similar style game that is not quite so ambitious may tide us all over. Perhaps we want to control a character who bears an odd resemblance to VVVVVV's Captain Viridian. Perhaps Moonman is just the game to sate those desires.

Moonman features a lot of the same stuff as Starbound (and its predecessor Terraria). There is digging. There is crafting. There is building. There is combat. There is procedural generation. There is "looking for moon fragments in friends." Okay, I guess that last one is new.

Moonman has recently begun its Kickstarter campaign with a goal of $35,000 AUD. It is intended to release on Linux, Mac, and Windows this May.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX dances to 3DS in May

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX is coming to Nintendo 3DS in late May, Sega announced today.

The cutesy rhythm game styles Hatsune Miku and friends after the Good Smile Company's trendy Nendoroid figures, which explains why the vocaloid songstresses all look so top-heavy. Here I was thinking all that fame and fortune had just finally gone to their heads.

Project Mirai DX will debut in North America on May 26, followed by releases in Japan and Korea on May 28, with the European launch completing Miku's world tour on May 29.

A game about Frozen's Anna giving birth

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST

Another treasure from the mobile games space courtesy of former Destructoid editor Nick Chester.

This one's called Anna Giving Birth and while I ponder what kind of audience this iPhone/iPad game exists to serve, I'll let the official description set the stage: "Anna got married and she was pregnant in the spring. Now nine months had elapsed, and it's time to give birth to a baby. Anna needs a very experienced doctor to help her deliver her baby. Let's come to help her!"

And the user reviews! Haha, the user reviews. To think, I held off on posting about this for a couple hours. Each time I flipped back to my browser tab, the game's shiny baby icon made me laugh a bit more until finally I decided that, "Yes, writing about Anna Giving Birth is a good idea."

There's also a similar game, Frozen Anna Give Birth A Baby, for our web-browsing friends. You start by monitoring the baby's heartbeat while sexy baby-making music plays in the background.

Up for another Battlefield Hardline beta? This one's open to all platforms

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

It's unclear when the next Battlefield Hardline beta will go live, but when it does, it'll be open to all players on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Cops and criminals will vie for control in the familiar Conquest mode, as well as engage in high-speed pursuits in Hotwire. The latter is what I imagined when "Battlefield with cops" was first thrown around. Looks promising. As for maps, we're getting two: Dust Bowl and Downtown.

The first beta didn't leave much of an impression, but I admittedly didn't give it sufficient time to do so. I'll give the game another chance, probably. The uncapped player progression is alluring.

So many buzzwords in one game's title

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

I feel like the developer's cribbin' from something, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Oh, well. Maybe the 2015 version will be a bit more forward.

Project Scissors dev: 'Working with a renowned film director could easily become a nightmare'

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

[Art by Mariel "Kinuko" Cartwright]

We're closing out our Project Scissors: NightCry pre-release interview series with director Hifume Kono by bringing the focus back on the historic pairing between developer Kono-san (Clock Tower) and his new partner in horror Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on, The Grudge). This was the second biggest paring of a horror film director and a game developer that I heard about in 2014. The first was Guillemo del Toro and Hideo Kojima, who are currently working to develop Silent Hills.

I asked Kono-san what he thought of the pairing between Kojima and del Toro, how his collaboration with Shimizu-san might work to combine the best aspects of Ju-on with Clock Tower, and for a final word on what makes Clock Tower/Project Scissors so special.

Thanks again to Kono-san for sharing his one-of-a-kind insights and inspirations with us. He has left and indelible mark on the evolution of the survival horror genre. It will be exciting to see what fascinating, nail-biting tour of doom he takes us on next.

Hell yes, hell yes, Rhythm Heaven 3DS

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 07:45 AM PST

During Japan's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced there would be a new Rhythm Heaven game for 3DS this year. It will feature over a hundred minigames, 70 of which comes from past entries in the series, 30 of which are new.

It's coming to Japan this summer. Hopefully we get word of a North American release.

Hopefully this makes it in:

16 minutes of Majora's Mask on 3DS because Nintendo loves you

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST

Have you managed to secure a fancy Majora's Mask New 3DS XL, but want to know what to expect from the remake? Don't worry; Nintendo of Japan has your back.

In this 16-minute video, we get to see early game day one Clock Town. There's Tingle floating high above the ground in the north district. Oh! There are some of the town's infamous Bombers. Awww, and there's sweet Anju minding the inn.

So many memories flooding my brain right now.

Meet the new mythical Pokémon Hoopa, the, uh, hoop Pokémon

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 07:15 AM PST

The 18th Pokémon movie, cleverly titled Pokémon the Movie XY 2015 and then re-titled The Ring Genie Hoopa, is coming out--you guessed it--this year. It stars the titular new ghost-psychic pocket monster Hoopa, not to be confused with the generation two water pocket monster Woopa.

Hoopa will also be coming to Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, though we don't yet know how you'll be able to obtain the "mischief Pokemon."

Dragon Age: Inquisition drops to $32 at Green Man Gaming

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

PC gamers who've gone the past few months without checking out Dragon Age: Inquisition because the price of admission felt too high get an extra nudge today via Green Man Gaming.

The UK-based digital retailer slashed prices on BioWare's latest RPG romp by 33%, sweetening the pot further by allowing its typical 20% coupon to stack on the deal. The end result is a healthy 46% off, leaving you paying only $32.16. (Yes, we did the math.)

Besides Inquisition, EA's FIFA 15 also receives the same discount treatment. While we're mentioning random Wednesday deals at GMG, Blackguards is on sale for up to 80% off, presumably because the second installment of the series is coming out next week.

PSA: Today is the last day to register for the free Super Smash Bros. soundtracks

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:45 AM PST

If you are anything like me, you put off registering products on Club Nintendo until months (or years) later, when they aren't worth as much. If you bought both the 3DS and the Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. and you haven't yet registered them with Club Nintendo, then today is the day to do it.

Registering both versions nets Nintendo fans a free two-disc soundtrack. Time is running out though. Today is the last day to do it. These should be shipping out some time in March of this year. How else are you going to get free music in this day and age?

Nintendo has vague excuse for the small New 3DS' absence

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:35 AM PST

The New 3DS and New 3DS XL launched in Japan last October and then in Australia and New Zealand the following month. Both models.

Today Nintendo announced the release date -- February 13 -- for the New 3DS XL in North America, as well as a special Majora's Mask-themed model. There was no word of a release of the smaller New 3DS, however. The one with colorful buttons and swappable face plates.

Nintendo of America issued a non-statement to Kotaku confirming that it wasn't an oversight. The New 3DS is currently only coming in XL.

"Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing. We think New Nintendo 3DS XL makes the most sense for our market. Nintendo makes different systems at different price points for a whole range of consumers, and New Nintendo 3DS XL simply expands those choices even further."

Kickstarter-funded Crystal Catacombs arrives on Steam tomorrow

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST

After nearly three years in development, Levels or Lives' retro-inspired roguelike pixel art platformer Crystal Catacombs is almost ready to make its debut on Steam.

Successfully funded on Kickstarter in July of 2012,  Maxwell Jensen's title is described by its creator as a "'Megavanian' love letter that utilizes Rogue-like procedurally generated levels/enemies/items with a heavy emphasis on classic 2D platforming."

Notable features include five "unique and expansive procedurally generated Crystal Realms, each utilizing different layouts and room designs" as well as "random monsters, treasures, weapons and artifact upgrades" and over "40 different unique enemies and bosses to conquer!"

The handcrafted pixel art and animation on this one caught my eye immediately. While perhaps not at the same level of polish and sophistication of titles like Legend of Dungeon, Level or Lives' take on the roguelike platformer still looks like a charming game in its own right.

Crystal Catacombs launches on Steam tomorrow and will be available for Windows, Mac OS X, and SteamOS + Linux.

New Dead or Alive doesn't have a fighting cock, but it has a schoolgirl

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:15 AM PST

I excitedly misread a Dead or Alive 5 Last Round press release that began, "THE FIGHTING ROSTER IN DEAD OR ALIVE 5 LAST ROUND CONTINUES TO GROW"

Fighting rooster? It's getting bigger? My ears perked up. Sounds like my kind of character.

However, it was just an announcement for a schoolgirl, Honoka.

Some background: "Having been raised all her life by her gentle and loving grandmother, Honoka is a sweet, easygoing kind of girl... but when she sees a fight, she cannot contain her excitement, or the mysterious power surging within her. Honoka has a strange knack for instantly learning any fighting move she sees. She has kept this power hush-hush, but has been itching to test it out in secret. Honoka studies her favorite moves from various sources and fighting styles, and combines them into a unique style which she calls 'Honoka Fu.'"

"Why am I...so hot?" the trailer concludes. I ask myself the same question every day.

I feel personally victimized by the fact that there is a Mean Girls mobile game

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

I took a look at the official Princess Bride mobile game the other day and it was garbage. Granted, I don't like that movie, but I know plenty of people who do. It was a terrible, uninspired amalgam of boring minigames that had the balls to charge you a $3.99 entry price, and another 99 cents if you didn't want to wait to unlock the rest of the games. Unfortunately, that's a glut of modern mobile titles now though -- you've gotta pick through the trash to find treasure.

There's a new Mean Girls mobile title on the horizon, which is being billed as an "easily accessible tiara defense" game, where you take one of eight characters from the movie and apparently stave off a new clique of Plastics in each level. But then there's also things like the art design, which is absolutely awful. I guess they're going by the whole "being hit by a bus" narrative at the end of the movie (or whatever happened, anyway) and these poses are the end result of the girls having been hit by a bus, showing off post-hit-by-a-bus back support and bone structures. Lindsay Lohan's character Cady appears to have gotten the worst of it, as you can see in the illustration.

Mortal Kombat X trailer reveals the return of a couple of fan favorites

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 05:45 AM PST

Drip feeding out character reveals is a fine fighting game tradition. But this morning, NetherRealm cranked up the dial and mainlined a medically unsafe dose straight to the heart of Mortal Kombat X junkies. A trailer that not only offers a look at the recently announced Kung Lao getting down and dirty with a whole lot of cringe-inducing buzz-saw action, but also drops reveals for two incredibly popular characters, Kitana and Goro.

The years have apparently been kinder to Kitana than they have to poor, decrepit Kung Lao. She's looking just as lovely and alluring as ever, and her dismemberment game has never been so on point, elevating the entire field of spontaneous-amputation and bifurcation. An inspiration that reminds us that no matter how good you are at something, there's always room to improve.

We already knew Goro was going to be making it back to the tournament by way of a skeezy pre-order incentive deal, but this is our first chance to see him in motion, rendered the way he'll appear in-game. The four-armed beast-man-thing looks more than ready for this debut as a playable member of the roster despite the gross business practices surrounding his arrival and I can't wait to see him in action.

After witnessing the sheer brutality of the currently revealed X-Ray moves and fatalities, you'd be forgiven for wondering if there were any other ways to mutilate a body left. But I've got faith in my boy Goro, I'm sure he'll come up with something special.

Nintendo made a clay Wii U GamePad for this delightful Kirby trailer

This Kirby and the Rainbow Curse trailer is like an abbreviated version of the Japanese trailer we saw last month. It once again touches on the game's claymazing intro, four-person co-op, and amiibo support for Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede, but it's just so gosh-darned cute.

This is out exclusively for Wii U on February 20, 2015. Who's in?

Mighty No. 9 developers show off a new highway-themed stage

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST

The developers of Mighty No. 9 have recently stated that the game is almost done, which is good news for the gameplay and not-so-great news for the uninspired art style. But the porting process has begun, and they're ready to show a new highway-themed stage that's home to the "Crimson Blade Master," Mighty No. 7.

You can get a taste of what the level is like in the Mighty Gunvolt DLC. At this rate the game seems to be ready sometime this year, but as it stands, we don't have a target window yet.

Every content update is really hefty, and provides hundreds of hours of stuff to do. Expect some impressions next week, and a full updated review after the second part hits.

Humble abandons 'one-click' Steam Key redemption

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 04:15 AM PST

Just over a year ago, Humble Bundle implemented OAuth "one-click" Steam Key redemption in an effort to simplify the process of adding games purchased through the service to your Steam account while protecting participating developers from bulk purchase and resale abuse that was undermining the service.

According to a recent update, Humble will be forced to revert back to the previous method of issuing Steam keys due to Valve's discontinuation of support for the OAuth protocol.

Recognizing that this change could potentially dissuade developers from participating in future Humble Bundles, we reached out to the company for comment on its plans going forward to protect developer's interests. A representative from Humble had this to say:

"We are looking into other ways to protect our developers, but for now Steam keys will have to be redeemed manually. We take our developer partners' concerns seriously and try to do the best we can to reduce fraud. We have a few security features in place to prevent bulk purchases and are always looking into other ways to make the system better for both our partners and our customers."

It's reassuring to know that the company has the best interest of developers in mind as it moves forward. To date, Humble has managed to raise over 50 million dollars for various charities over the course of the past few years and without the trust and confidence of the participating developers, this would not have been possible.

DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition pushed up a week

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

Maybe Capcom is confident in its build of DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition for the PS4 and Xbox One, because the company just pushed up the release date by a week.

While it was originally slated for March 17, it will now be available on March 10. The new version boasts 60fps (finally) and 1080p resolution, as well as retouched visuals and all the DLC released to date. It'll also have a few improvements, like manual target locks and new modes.

While it doesn't measure up to Capcom's past entries, it's definitely worth playing through at least once, especially with all the extras -- and a few added community mods that make the game a better action experience than Ninja Theory developed.

Mad genius makes a PS4/Xbox One combination laptop

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST

Eddie Zarick, the Doc Brown-esque craftsman behind those cool PS4 and Xbox One laptops, has gone one step beyond: he's put both current-generation consoles into one big shell.

Apparently, the PS4's capacitive power button has a few kinks (it doesn't work 100% of the time), but otherwise, this is exactly what you'd expect: a pretty big laptop that can play just about every console game on the market. Next step is duct-taping a Wii U to this thing, right?

Zarick will make a PlayBox Forty-One for any "seriously interested customer," so if you've got the cash to burn, head on over to Eddie's website and shoot him an email!

Heroes of the Storm entering into closed beta this week

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

Heroes of the Storm is feeling pretty great so far, and it's only in alpha form. Well, it was in alpha, as Blizzard has just sent word over that it has entered the beta phase.

A patch is ringing in the change, which adds ranked play and new content like the Sky Temple map and Thrall the hero. If you want in on ranked, you'll have to make it to level 30 and have a pool of 10 characters or more.

That sounds familiar...

It'll be interesting to see how the game ends up after launch, because with the Blizzard name, it feels fairly promising.

Microsoft's Phantom Dust reboot will be a '30-hour JRPG'

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST

Remember last year when Microsoft said it was rebooting Phantom Dust? Me neither!

It's been a while since we've heard about the project, but now we have some juicy details compliments of creative director Ken Lobb in a recent podcast. It's obvious that the reboot will be of the JRPG variety, but the goal is to make it "30 hours."

Lobb says that the story is one of the original's strengths, and it deserves to be retold to a bigger audience. The new Phantom Dust will also not hide the fact that it's an arena or card-based game so people don't feel the sting of the bait and switch.

The pricing model is still undecided. The Killer Instinct piecemeal idea was thrown around, since gamers won't want to take a "sixty dollar risk."

Sony's Dead Rising movie will debut on March 27

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

That Dead Rising: Watchtower movie starring Rob Riggle as Frank West is still happening, and Sony Pictures has set a premiere date -- March 27.

It will debut on Crackle, Sony's online streaming service, but it will also hit the physical realm and other streaming outlets eventually. Although the project is a feature film, it will be provided in episodic format on select sites.

Nothing I've seen so far gives me much hope for Watchtower, but Riggle is a pretty interesting choice, so I'll give it a watch on Crackle.

Here are all the amiibo waves and figures we know about

[Update: the list has been updated to include Wave 4. In regards to Marth, see this bit of news.]

The amiibo figures out today, and in some locations, they're selling out. While Villager and Wii Fit Trainer seem to be two of the rarer figures, Marth is decidedly the one to look for, as he's currently going for $30 on Amazon -- it seems like a nationwide shortage.

Of course two more waves have been confirmed so far, and if you picked some up today, you may want to know when those are out too. Here is the full list after doing some research and re-confirming the dates with Nintendo.

If you want the Majora's Mask New 3DS XL, I suggest going to GameStop in-store

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 01:30 AM PST

[Update: as of 1PM EST today, many stores in multiple areas are sold out of pre-orders both online and instore.]

After covering the Nintendo Direct event this morning, I took a field trip to three of my local GameStop locations to discuss the New 3DS XL pre-order situation. As an aside, the Majora's Mask New 3DS XL just sold out on GameStop.com.

As stores open across the country this morning, GameStop is just getting in their corporate news blast on the SKUs. If you want the red or black New 3DS model, have the employee double-check the SKU to make sure you're getting the right color, as the listings aren't fully in the system yet. If you want the Monster Hunter 4 bundle, that SKU is $229.99. I was told you should have plenty of time over the next few days to get your order in for these models.

As for the Majora's Mask 3DS, I was informed that in order to have an in-store request put in, you need to pay off the system in full -- that's $199.99 upfront as opposed to a $50 deposit for the other models. They expect that to be fully sold out today.

Other stores such as Nintendo.com have "coming soon" listings on their sites for the New 3DS, so GameStop is your best bet right now.

Good luck today!

Splatoon targeting a May launch on Wii U

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 01:15 AM PST

Splatoon finally has a launch month announced on Wii U, and it's May 2015. Announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation, we also got a couple of new details for the upcoming colorful third-person shooter.

Splatoon is set to have numerous options for customizing your characters design and loadouts before battle, as well as having its own Mii Plaza. Very few details were given as to what functionality the Mii Plaza will have, but at the very least it should act as a place to show off your custom characters.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is releasing worldwide on February 13, the same day as the New 3DS in North America and Europe. Finally, a release date.

The game will be available on its own, or pre-installed on a limited-edition New 3DS XL. Look at that picture up the top, I want it in my hands right now.

The game will be getting a demo on 3DS before release, distributed to Club Nintendo members. Those who are lucky enough to receive a free demo code will also be given codes to distribute to their friends to play the demo online with. Players lucky enough to receive codes should find them in an email some time today.

Nintendo has announced that Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. will have amiibo support when it arrives on March 13 on the 3DS. Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina are in, and they become playable characters in the game if you happen to own the figures and touch them to your New 3DS.

An adapter wasn't announced for "Old" 3DS units, but the rumor is that it will come between amiibo Waves 3 and 4. The company also hinted the Marth amiibo will be re-released this year.

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:29 AM PST

Nintendo has announced a February 13, 2015 release date and $199.99 price tag for the New 3DS XL in North America. All of the previously announced features are in, including the extra C-Stick control, speedier boot-up times, enhanced processing power, extra shoulder buttons, slightly longer battery life, a switch to micro-SD memory cards, NFC (for amiibo), and the face-tracking 3D system, to ensure "stable viewing at a wider angle."

It will launch with both a red and black model, and will still work with every previous 3DS game. Sadly, there is no word of a "smaller" 3DS model -- just the XL.

Nintendo will announce a way to transfer your data to the new unit in the "coming weeks." it will not include an AC adapter, but any adapter since the DSi will work. Um, okay Nintendo.

Mario Party 10 details revealed, including amiibo support

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:25 AM PST

In Today's Nintendo Direct presentation Nintendo unveiled a whole bunch of new details about Mario Party 10 on Wii U.

Alongside the standard Mario Party star collection mode, Mario Party 10 will have a number of new game modes available. In Bowser Party, one player on the GamePad plays a powered-up Bowser, competing against four other players from the Mario series in a four-on-one competition.

The amiibo party is a new board game mode that is played using current Mario series amiibo from the Smash Bros. run, or the new Super Mario line of amiibo. You use your figures as game pieces, and the board design as well as the power-ups and items you encounter will change base on which character you play as.

Mario Party 10 releases for Wii U on March 20, and can be bought in a bundle with the new Mario amiibo.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars coming to Wii U and 3DS with Cross-Buy

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:24 AM PST

The newest entry in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, Tipping Star, will arrive on both the 3DS and Wii U on March 5. Good news, right?

Well Nintendo has even better news, as it seems like the publisher is finally starting to come around to the whole "Cross-Buy" thing. When you buy the game on either platform, you'll get a code for the other version for free. It doesn't seem as seamless, but hey, it's the same end result.

You'll also be able to share and rate level creations on Miiverse.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will get amiibo support on March 20

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:24 AM PST

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be getting its long-awaited amiibo support on March 20. The game will use the new Toad amiibo, which is set to arrive as part of the Mario-specific line.

This must be why Nintendo has been quiet about amiibo support for the game -- it was waiting to announce the all-new Mario figures. It makes sense, since Toad isn't a Super Smash Bros. fighter.

Pokémon Shuffle on the 3DS brings the dreaded mobile 'energy' microtransactions to the platform

Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:07 AM PST

Pokémon Shuffle is a new puzzle game coming to the 3DS, but the news that Nintendo has just announced is troubling. It will be free to pickup, but it will have an energy mechanic built in -- in other words, it will stop you from playing unless you wait for your energy to refill, or pay real money using IAP (in-app-purchases, or microtransactions) to keep playing.

Nintendo says this allows "different styles of players to enjoy the game." Ew. It will arrive in February 2015.
