| WoW Archivist: 10 years, 10 amazing moments Posted: 18 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Events (In-Game), Game Mechanics, Opinion, Hands-On, Anniversaries, Subscription, WoW Archivist WoW Archivist is a biweekly column by WoW Insider's Scott Andrews, who explores the secrets of World of Warcraft's past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW's history? What secrets does the game still hold? It first appeared on our sister site on January 1616, 2015, and is included here by permission. In 2004, I bought a brown box with some discs inside it. On the cover was a close-up of a woman with crazy purple eyebrows and an angry bearded guy -- possibly Matt Rossi -- holding a gun. I didn't know anything about the Warcraft universe at the time. I'd watched someone play Warcraft III once (or was it II?). I remember chuckling at the peons' comments as they got to work. That was the extent of my experience. I'd been playing Final Fantasy XI, and I loved the concept of an online world. I was hoping for a game that was more accessible than FFXI but with all the cool monsters, grouping, exploration, and loot. I never imagined the journey that I was about to take, the people I would meet, the opportunities that would become open to me as a result of that purchase. Many of us who played back then had no idea what was about to happen to the gaming world because of that brown box. Continue reading WoW Archivist: 10 years, 10 amazing moments

| One Shots: Christmas leftovers Posted: 18 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Screenshots, EVE Online, Culture, Ultima Online, One Shots, Miscellaneous, Trove, Landmark You guys! Even though Christmas is well and over, you're still sending me wonderful screenshot presents! I'm blushing. I don't even know what to say other than, "You rock! Also, no butt pictures!"Our first non-posterior shot is from reader Jake, who braved the heart of a volcano for this vista: "Here's a picture of my Dracolyte in Trove after having finished a really cool dungeon that took me down into the depths of a volcano. After a while, you start to see similar dungeon types repeated, but this was a new one for me. I kept expecting to see a conflicted hobbit contemplating a ring as I descended the volcano, but alas, nothing but lava beetles and an ember dragon." What will we find when we descend into the rest of our player-submitted screenshots for this week? Hopefully more than lava beetles! Continue reading One Shots: Christmas leftovers

| The Daily Grind: What's your favorite EQII class? Posted: 18 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Classes, MMO Industry, PvE, Opinion, The Daily Grind Welcome to another installment of Massively's Daily Grind where I give SOE -- and more specifically EverQuest II -- some free air time.As I mentioned earlier this week, I recently returned to the game and am having a pretty good time of it. I'm not sure Coercer is the class for me, though, which is where today's question comes in. Help me out here: what's your favorite EQII class and why?

| Make My MMO: January 11 - 17, 2015 Posted: 17 Jan 2015 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Business Models, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items, Crowdfunding, Make My MMO This week was relatively tame as far as crowdfunded MMOs go, though we did see a new entry in the Kickstarter sweepstakes as Maestros of the Anthymn officially launched its campaign. The tile seeks to raise some $200,000 CAD to fund a game where you can "literally mold the world around you, solve puzzles, and conquer impossible enemies through creating and wielding music itself." And someone said there's no innovation in MMOs these days! Click past the cut for the rest of our crowdfunding roundup. Continue reading Make My MMO: January 11 - 17, 2015

| The usual suspects dominate December's Raptr rankings Posted: 17 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Culture, MMO Industry, News Items Do you quote Raptr data when having unscientific discussions about MMO playerbase numbers? If so, rejoice, because here are some more numbers based on a sample size of dubious value! As you might expect, League of Legends, Dota 2, and World of Warcraft continue to dominate Raptr users' attention spans, while ArcheAge, Final Fantasy XIV, and Guild Wars 2 all dropped from their position in November's rankings. | Camelot Unchained posts new art, dev checklist items Posted: 17 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, News Items, Crowdfunding, Camelot Unchained If you missed Thursday night's Camelot Unchained update, CityState bossman Mark Jacobs recapped it prior to the close of business on Friday, and he also threw in some new art assets and a project checklist for good measure. The latter is interesting if you're following the sandbox PvP title's development closely, as it features both recently completed milestones and some new ones that the team will be tackling in the very near future.

| Perfect Ten: My mobile MMO experiment, part 1 Posted: 17 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Free-to-Play, Mobile, Hands-On, Perfect Ten I'm often mystified that we haven't seen or heard much about MMOs on mobile devices. You'd think that with such a massive potential audience that studios would be racing to bust this market wide open, but whether it's the limitations of such devices (size, lack of input) or some stigma against developing "serious" games for app stores, we've seen remarkably few of them over the past few years.I've grown increasingly curious what MMOs, if any, might be out there for my tablet and smartphone. Practically every list I've read begins with both Order & Chaos Online and the Spacetime Studio games (both strong entries) and then quickly peters out with titles that nobody writing those lists have ever played. Search engine inquiries are helpful with that, I assume. So I decided that I'd undertake an experiment. I would scour the internet and app store for 10 MMOs that have come at least slightly recommended by some list maker, sample them, and see if they compelled me to play more. Will any of these 10 prove to be interesting enough to stay on my phone after this series is done? Find out as I start with the first five of the bunch...
