Pixar's Up coming to New 3DS in Japan

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

Back when Nintendo thought the 3D part of the 3DS was a marketable, they promised that we'd all be watching 3D movies on the thing all the time and everyday. While there are a few cool shows like Bee and Puppycat on Nintendo Video, and Netflix and Youtube run on the console just fine, I think it's fair to say that 3D video playback is far from the 3DS's killer application.

Maybe that will change when the New 3DS comes around. With an improved 3D display and better processing power, it's much more capable 3D video player, but in the end it all comes down what the install base wants. Are the people who care enough about gaming to buy this mid-generation upgrade also the people who really want to watch Up again, but this time on a 3D handheld? In the past I would have said "not a chance", but I also would have never guessed that normcore would take off, so I stopped saying that forever.

Nekopara Vol. 1 tells the tale of Kashou Minaduki, a young baker descended from a long line of Japanese confection makers who sets out on his own to open a patisserie. Of course, a couple of catgirls show up, as catgirls are wont to do, and hijinks ensue. Naturally.

The visual novel is slated to debut on Steam today with a $10 asking price.

It took almost four years to build this amazing Pillar of Autumn from Halo with Legos

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

I was recently given a tiny Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Lego set. 47 pieces. I put it together in no time. Michelangelo with a little cart thing. It was simple, but I loved it. You know; that feeling you get when you finish pretty much any Lego project.

That's why I can't imagine the elation that would accompany finishing this spectacular work of art. Lee Jones recently showed off his Lego Pillar of Autumn from Halo at BrickCon in Seattle. It was an undertaking that took three-and-a-half years to complete and cost approximately $7,000. The final product is more than seven feet long and weighs 220 pounds.

Because of its sheer size, it's cringe-worthy thinking how nervous you'd have to be moving the iconic cruiser to the convention. One slip-up, and there's four years down the drain.

Wii U GameCube adapter is in stock at GameStop, in bundle form

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 07:35 AM PST

Just a quick heads-up, the Wii U GameCube controller adapter is in stock at GameStop online for $109.97, which means that you'll have to buy the Smash Bros. bundle to get it. It includes the Wii U edition of the game, as well as a GameCube controller and the adapter itself.

To price it all out, the game is $60, the adapter is $20 (but sold out everywhere), and the controller is $30 -- so you're not saving anything, but if you're desperate for that adapter you could always sell off the other bits yourself.

Neptunia Re;Birth and Fairy Fencer coming to Steam

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST

Idea Factory International has announced plans to bring a handful of its role-playing games to PC. Hyperdimension Neptunia, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2: Sisters Generation, and Fairy Fencer F will all be headed to Steam in the near future.

Re;Birth and Re;Birth 2: Sisters Generation are remakes of the first pair of Hyperdimension Neptunia games, which satirize the games industry via moe anthropomorphism. They were originally designed for PS Vita and feature a number of improvements, such as enhanced visuals, new music and voice acting, and the battle system from Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory.

Fairy Fencer F, released on PS3 this autumn, siphons the essence of the Neptunia games into a fantasy setting, telling a tale about magical weapon users caught up in a battle between gods.

Re;birth 2 launches for Vita across North America and Europe in February.

Sonic Runners dashes to mobile in 2015 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

After the poor showings of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Shattered Crystal, where does the Sonic franchise go from here? In your pocket, apparently. The next installment has been revealed, and it's Sonic Runners, a mobile title.

The announcement came at "Sonic Fan Thanksgiving 2014" in Tokyo, as reported by Famitsu. Details are scarce apart from the name and platform. Producer Takashi Iizuka confirmed a 2015 release date and said more information will come in January.

It's tough to imagine Sonic fans getting too excited about Runners. But, who knows? After Boom went bust, the only direction to go is up.

Be the biggest fan with Paparazzi's asymmetric multiplayer

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

I won't lie; I was tempted to just post Lady Gaga lyrics as I hum the tune and then call it a day. That would do a disservice to the game Paparazzi, which was featured in the Indiecade showcase at E3 2014. We missed it then, but it is looking like a unique competitive multiplayer title.

One player takes on the role of the celebrity and the other plays as the paparazzi. The celebrity has to maintain his dignity by sprinting around, hiding in crowds, and otherwise avoiding the gaze of the photographer. Meanwhile, the paparazzi player has to search for the celebrity, be quick to track, and go for the ultimate limousine-exiting crotch shot.

Paparazzi is headed to PlayStation 4 and Wii U in February 2015.

Maybe don't spend $250 pre-ordering Halo 5: Guardians, okay?

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST

There's a certain allure behind mystery boxes. What's in them? It could be anything. It could even be a boat; you know how much we've always wanted one of those.

Well, Microsoft's offering a mystery box of its own today for pre-order, and it's in the form of a $250 limited collector's edition of Halo 5: Guardians. There's probably not a boat inside it, but it's $150 more expensive than the limited edition, and Microsoft only says it includes "everything in the limited edition, as well as additional content such as a commemorative numbered statue."

The timing of the announcement of these pre-orders is highly strategic, as the Halo 5: Guardians beta opens today for owners of The Master Chief Collection. However, given all the problems that Master Chief Collection suffered, it's probably not a great idea to plunk down cash for a game that's almost a year away from release. But, if you're willing to do that, Microsoft will happily take it.

Brittany Vincent's random assortment of Game of the Year 2014 picks

Posted: 29 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

I'm not entirely sure what year it is. Is it 2015? That's what I keep hearing around the internet. I'm pretty sure it's still 2014, at least for a few more days though. Who can be sure in tumultuous times like these?

Anyway, I can barely remember what I did yesterday or what happened on the last episode of American Horror Story: Freak Show I watched before the holiday break. So it's probably superfluous to attempt to recall every single game I played this year and rank how much I enjoyed each one.

So here's an attempt at diving deep into the dozens of games I played this year. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed a lot of them, but Wikipedia is failing me and GoDaddy doesn't save the changes sent to the server when I save my "recent articles" page on my portfolio hosted on WordPress, so I'm not even really sure what all came out this year. But I know which one was my favorite. It's Bayonetta 2, actually, because it's the only game I favored over sleep. And when I'm nearly fetishizing sleep at this point in my life and a game can hold my attention so long that I'll forgo resting in order to strike down just one more boss and get maybe 3.5 hours of sleep for my day job, it's something special.

So yeah, my games of 2014. Y'all betta werk.

Call of Duty gets '360 No Scope' Mode

Posted: 28 Dec 2014 09:30 PM PST

Sniper rifles only, decreased health, specialisations based around single shot combat and no secondary weapon options? Yes, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has a new team based multiplayer mode and it's all about fast reactions and unforgiving competition.

The new mode, One Shot, features five different classes that all come with the Mors bolt action sniper rifle and no secondary weapon choices. While each of the five classes has differing non combat items to balance how they're used, at the core you are only likely to get one shot at your enemy. Miss that first shot and you're unlikely to survive long enough to get another.

All five new classes for the mode were balanced with the help of professional Call of Duty player NaDeSHoT. Apparently he knows a lot about tweaking sniper rifle builds.
