Happy birthday, Guile

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 01:00 PM PST

You thought we forgot? Not a chance. Happy birthday, Guile!

Rock-solid abs, a full head of hair, that sprightly glimmer in your eye -- you're looking fabulous.

Destructoid is home to plenty of adoring fans who post daily tributes to your greatness, regardless of their relevance to the conversation at hand. I wonder what gifts they might bring on an occasion as fitting as your birthday. Something tells me it won't take long to find out.

99-cent Battlefield 3 and Inquisition for 33% off in Origin's year-end sale

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

Origin finally started its "real" winter sale, and deals are fairly decent, especially if you've been eying a PC copy of Dragon Age: Inquisition. The PC download's price finally matches the console versions' Black Friday weekend price of $39.99 (console games being cheaper than PC is blasphemy).

The pricier Digital Deluxe for Inquisition is now only $44.99, and even though that makes it the lowest ever price, we're not convinced it's a worthwhile purchase. Other good picks in the year-end sale are items that expire a bit earlier, including Battlefield 4 Premium for $25 and Battlefield 3 for $0.99.

The award for Best Game Mechanics of 2014 goes to...

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST

The idea behind the best mechanics category is to highlight games that you'd love to play even if they had stick-figure graphics, no multiplayer, no music, and no story. Some of them may be filled with complex operations. Others may be simple one-button affairs. Regardless, these are games that keep you coming back again and again, hoping to get all the parts to fit together just a little bit better each time.

The votes were really all over the place here. Games that I figured had a good chance of taking the top spot like Sunset Overdrive and Geometry Wars 3 were beat out by write-ins like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, The Castle Doctrine and Divinity: Original Sin. Other surprise staff nominations like Wolfenstein: The New Order, Xeodrifter, Road Not Taken, Mario Kart 8, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Bravely Default, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Xenonauts, Mercenary Kings, Freedom Wars, Destiny, and Infamous: Second Son didn't do quite as well, but regardless, the message is clear: the Destructoid staff plays a lot of different kinds of games strictly for the mechanics.

There was also a three-way tie for third place in this category, between three games that couldn't be much more different. In the end, Bayonetta 2, Octodad, and Shovel Knight all tied for the bronze medal in this particular popularity contest. Now that's a three-way crossover I'd pay top dollar for. With those games down, only OlliOlli and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor remained. Keep reading to see which one landed on top, and don't forget to vote in our Reader's Poll for your favorite game of 2014

Rust Cohle's GOTY games for 2014

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST

Another year, another series of GOTY lists fueled by fanboyism and cognitive dissonance. We all know the AAA games get their fair share of nods and stick shakes. That's why I'm here to tell the world what my GOTY games are for 2014.

Not that it matters; we're all living in our own linear perceptions, anyway. Our ideals, biases, telling us right and wrong. All I can give is a taste of what my mind perceives to be true.

Double Fine's Devs Play video series is fantastic

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 09:00 AM PST

Even if you aren't usually one for Let's Play videos, I'd suggest taking a look, if only for a moment, at Double Fine and 2 Player Productions' slick, informative new YouTube series Devs Play.

The debut episode is The Lion King for Sega Genesis (and a couple levels of Aladdin, to start) with over an hour of insightful commentary by Westwood Studios co-founder Louis Castle.

The "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" level takes me back. So brutal, though you wouldn't know it from how ridiculously well Double Fine's Greg Rice plays here. Good lord!

"We couldn't let you pass level two too fast," says Castle, because, at the time, Disney thought people wouldn't buy its games if they made it too far into a Blockbuster rental copy. Bastards.

Xbox Live deals: Game of Thrones, Revengeance, Rock Band Blitz

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST

I never know quite which deals to highlight: do I talk up mostly newer games that haven't been on sale time and time again, or do I stand my ground by highlighting old favorites that most (but not all!) of us already own? Hmm. Little of column A, little of column B, I suppose.

To that end, here's what caught my attention in Microsoft's Countdown to 2015 sale on Xbox Live: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance ($6.49), Spec Ops: The Line ($4.49), Bully Scholarship Edition ($3.74), Red Dead Redemption ($7.49), Max Payne 3 ($4.99), Rock Band Blitz ($5.54), Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ($6.59), Telltale's Game of Thrones ($2.50 for Episode One; $16.99 for the Season Pass), and Alien: Isolation ($30 for Xbox One; $33.49 for Xbox 360).

Steam sale: Just Cause 2, Garry's Mod, Goat Simulator

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

Much to my dismay, the Steam Holiday Sale is still going on. Maybe it'll never end. Maybe discounted PC games are the new standard. And then Valve will further slash the prices of select games -- causing a sale within a sale -- a paradox capable of ripping apart the fabric of this fragile existence.

Don't enable Valve and its world-ending ways.

PSN deals: Peggle 2, Danganronpa 2, Ground Zeroes

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST

In this final week of PlayStation Network's holiday sale, you can save on the likes of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, Metro Redux, Alien: Isolation, Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut, Peggle 2, and Nidhogg, to name some of the cooler ones.

Full list of discounts at the link below, or just plain below. Work that scroll wheel! They almost had me (unintentionally) fooled with the Grand Theft Auto V listing but it's for PS3, not PS4.

Friendly reminder: If you're giving a console as a gift, download updates tonight

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST

Remember the good ol' days when getting a console as a gift meant matching up yellow, red, and white, hitting the power button, and videogames were mere seconds away? Yeah, that's not how things go anymore. New gaming consoles come with a litany of updates.

That's why, if you're giving a videogame console as a gift this year, it's a good idea to carefully unpack it, hook it up, install all updates, and then re-wrap. It's kind of a pain, but the recipient will appreciate it. There's nothing worse than being given a new toy and not being able to play with it. Nothing.

Telltale Games Collection wraps up five games for $55

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

Unwrapping gifts has a special feeling about it that almost everyone can identify with. Digital presents aren't as satisfying in that regard, but sometimes a package comes along that's enticing enough to warrant buying yourself an early treat.

Today, Telltale Games revealed the appropriately named Telltale Games Collection -- a digital bundle of The Walking Dead Season One and Season Two, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, and Game of Thrones. All stories told for $55. Well, that looks to be the price for Xbox Live Gold subscribers; everyone else will find it for $109.99. And, for some reason, it's only available on Xbox One.

While both seasons of The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us are fully playable already, the other two titles are still in development. This collection comes with a season pass for the entirety of the remaining content, though -- you just have to wait a bit to get it. However, that pause may be welcomed; otherwise, your nerves will be shot from the constant split-second decision-making.

It's now easier to unlock Bruce Lee in EA Sports UFC

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST

Martial artist Bruce Lee is in EA Sports UFC, somehow. You can play as him after besting Career Mode on Pro difficulty or higher, or instantly if you pre-ordered the game. Because money.

That's how it was, anyway. Electronic Arts is now offering Lee (for all weight classes) as a free download on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live until January 5, 2015.

So do that, if you want. Or unlock him the hard way.

Get a load of the One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X amiibo support

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

As you may have heard, third-party games will be opting in for amiibo support in addition to Nintendo titles. The biggest one so far is probably One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X for the 3DS.

You can use the figures to unlock new costumes for the cast, such as a Mario outfit for Luffy. The key here is that these aren't just colored reskins -- they legitimately deserve the moniker of "costume," as the entire character is completely remodeled with the new gear. Seeing Chopper with that new pink outfit and Kirby hat is particularly amazing.

I'm so down for Dragon Quest Heroes

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST

If there are any Dragon Quest fanatics in the house, they're out Christmas shopping. It's just me, guy who played Dragon Quest IX but remembers almost nothing of the DS role-playing game.

That said: I love Hyrule Warriors, my introduction to developer Omega Force, and plan to stick with the game far into next year. (Those never-ending Adventure maps!) Seems like a safe-enough bet that I'll like Dragon Quest Heroes despite my unfamiliarity with the long-running series from which it draws. The wonderful monster designs alone should carry my interest.

Remember that gorgeous pixel-art roguelike hack-and-slash we posted about a couple months back? Well, if you liked what you saw the last time we covered the delightful Children of Morta, you're in for a treat!

Dead Mage studios has recently announced that it plans to bring the title to Kickstarter this January and also released this badass trailer to offer some backstory for the game.

As things progress, well be sure to keep you posted!

Hyrule Warriors' costume DLC goes on sale, is surprisingly cheap

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST

Hyrule Warriors has had a fair amount of DLC so far. By "fair" I mean "fairly priced," as the Season Pass offers up four hefty packs, two of which have dropped already. More DLC has also arrived in the form of costume packs.

Priced at $0.99 each, you can get the Ganondorf-themed "Demon King" set, the Twilight Princess set, the Skyward Sword set, and the Ocarina of Time set; the latter three apply to both Link and Zelda.

In other words, you can now by those retailer-exclusive bonuses upfront at a nominal fee.

The 8-bit Time Machine album takes a nostalgic angle at newer properties

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST

More than any subgenre of gaming music, my heart is particularly fond of retro-themed tunes. To help bring us back into the past, composer Giovanni Rotondo has created a project called "The 8-Bit Time Machine," which provides old-school renditions of modern games.

The 10-track project is currently taking on games like Wind Waker, Super Mario Galaxy, Destiny, and Angry Birds. It's set at a mere $1,000 goal with a stretch of $1,500 for four additional tracks.

Expect the finished result in January 2015 on multiple streaming and digital music services.

Bravely Archive: D's Report is a thing now for iOS/Android

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST

After I finished Bravely Default and unlocked the secret ending, I thought to myself "please make this a franchise." I know the sequel was already greenlit by Square Enix, but I wanted the series to continue -- perhaps bloom into a modern-day juggernaut like Final Fantasy was years ago.

I may have gotten my wish, as Square seems to be going full-throttle with the Bravely series. A new game is coming called Bravely Archive: D's Report, and it's set to hit the Android and iOS platforms.

We don't know a whole lot about the game right now, but it seems to take place within the universe, and has a mild amount of battling. I'll give it a whirl!

This homemade Mega Man X Iris figure is awesome

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 12:00 AM PST

Although we've seen a great deal of figures from the Mega Man universe, Iris has never gotten the recognition that many fans have been wanting. Madhands has taken things into its own...well...hands by crafting a figure of its own -- one so stunning that it looks official.

Hobby Rock is actually selling the kit, and it's created to mirror the size and dimensions of the official D-Arts figure line, so she'll look great right next to them providing support.

Skullgirls Beta trials Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Superjumps

Posted: 22 Dec 2014 10:45 PM PST

Good news for any Marvel vs. Capcom 2 fans out there who also happen to be Skullgirls players: the game's Superjumps are taking a step closer to those of MvC2, at least in the current Beta build.

Announced by Skullgirls lead programmer Mike Zaimont in a set of patch notes for Skullgirls Encore's Endless Beta, the Superjump mechanic will be undergoing a number of tweaks that should lead to it more closely resembling Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The changes include:

  • All characters having a doubled takeoff velocity for Superjumps and air control with the joystick.
  • Hitting with a normal mid Superjump will halve your upward velocity.
  • Painwheel's flight speed in all directions has been temporarily increased to closer match Superjumps in upward velocity.

These changes in the Endless Beta may never end up coming to the main game, but they have already had an interesting effect on balance and combos for those spending time trying them out. Time will tell if the balance changes and combo switch ups will be a benefit to the series in the long term and if we will ever see the changes make the full game.
