Posted: 11 Dec 2014 03:00 PM PST It seems like every post about Borderlands has the same comments in it: a scathing remark about Aliens: Colonial Marines, a proclamation to wait for the Game of the Year Edition, and a prediction that that 2K and Gearbox will package up the trilogy to sell on current generation hardware. If this Australian Classification Board listing is any indication, that prediction is even more likely to come true now. The application for classification of Borderlands Remastered Edition looks fairly standard, noting the series' "strong violence" and that its publisher is 2K. Slightly more telling details are that it is listed as "modified" as opposed to "original," which points to a visual upgrade, and that both Gearbox and 2K Australia are credited as authors, which suggests the inclusion of the Pre-Sequel in addition to Borderlands 1 and/or 2. Basically, it sounds like what we would expect from something called "Borderlands Remastered Edition."
Recycle your unwanted Steam junk to bid on games Posted: 11 Dec 2014 02:00 PM PST It's that time of year again, when Valve comes up with some new and interesting way to separate players from their money while convincing them that it is a good deal. This time around Valve is putting on an auction. Up to 200,000 games will be sold off to the highest bidder of each round. The catch? The currency at play here is gems, which can be obtained by cashing in Steam trading cards, profile backgrounds, and emoticons. All of that junk sitting in Steam inventories that never gets used can be put toward a free game. Of course, everybody else will be doing the same, so you might have to grind for additional gems by doing the whole trading card thing. Play games that drop cards, craft badges to get backgrounds and emoticons, and then convert them all to gems. That's how they get you. Bidding on the first round of auctions has already begun, but the auction officially kicks off on December 15 at 7:00 AM Pacific, with each bidding round lasting 45 minutes. The auction ends on December 18 at 10:00 AM Pacific. In true Valve form, the back story for this seedy holiday black market has been presented in comic form.
Final Fantasy X, X-2 HD coming to PS4 Posted: 11 Dec 2014 10:30 AM PST Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD is coming to PlayStation 4 in spring of 2015. Square Enix announced the news at a PlayStation China press conference in Shanghai. The PlayStation 4 and Vita are officially launching in China on January 11, 2015. Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD will be available digitally and at retail and cost $50 on PS4. Part of me wants to take tired jabs at Square Enix pricing, milking. Another part of me wants this to make them a bunch more money so I finally get Final Fantasy XII HD. One part of me wants to eat a burrito and another wants to lie down in traffic, but it's raining.
Facing my genes with Solid Snake Posted: 11 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST [Dtoid community member Bardley played some Metal Gear games. This got him thinking about genetics and how they could affect him throughout his life. He gives us an amazing blog well worth reading. Want to see your own stuff appear on the front page? Go write something! --Occams Electric Toothbrush] I’ve had the Metal Gear series on my mind a lot recently. Just a few weeks ago, I blogged about some of the music I loved from the series. I picked up a PlayStation 3 this past summer and played through Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, picking up the story from where I left off from playing the previous games two years ago. Since then, I’ve started playing through Peace Walker and am trying to find a decently priced copy of Ground Zeroes to catch up on the story before The Phantom Pain launches next year.
Final Fantasy VII PS4 will cost more than the recent PC port Posted: 11 Dec 2014 09:30 AM PST Last weekend, Square Enix screwed with its fans with too much pomp around announcing a PS4 release of the original Final Fantasy VII, seemingly a port of last year's PC release. You can get last year's PC release for $12 on Steam, but when Final Fantasy VII comes to PS4 in spring of 2015, it will be $16. I guess that's $4 for "system-exclusive features." The Share button, maybe?
| New SaGa and Deception games are in development Posted: 11 Dec 2014 09:00 AM PST It has been over ten years since Unlimited Saga. There have been re-releases in the interim. And a Gree social game, Emporers SaGa, a couple years ago in Japan. From the same source that brought us confirmation of Gravity Rush 2's existence, there is a quote in Dengeki PlayStation from SaGa series executive producer Akitoshi Kawazu, "The latest SaGa game is in preparation. Hopefully we’ll be able to get more information out later on down the line." Whether that means more ports or more social games, well, it probably does. Deception producer Keisuke Kikuchi also confirmed, "We’re deep in development for the next stage in the Deception franchise and are working towards being able to announce it sometime in the near future." Deception IV released this year. Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward director Kotaro Uchikoshi said, "We’ve [Spike Chunsoft] got a lot of games for next year and the year after that we should be able to unveil one after another eventually." | Gravity Rush 2 'in earnest development,' my heart not yet broken Posted: 11 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST Since being teased at Tokyo Game Show 2013, Gravity Rush 2 has been quiet. I certainly missed it at TGS 2014. And just about every other event I went to this year, even if it was an event that there was no way a Gravity Rush 2 update would happen at. And so a sliver of update and hope is better than none at all. Let's get Gravity Rush 2 somewhere on the books as existing in 2014. Hachima Kikou noted a quote from Gravity Rush director Keiichiro Toyama in Dengeki PlayStation, saying that, "[t]he new title is in earnest development." Most anticipated game of 2015 confirmed. | Let's look at some cool behind-the-scenes pictures of Doom Posted: 11 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST In celebration of Doom's 21st birthday, Brett shared a personal anecdote about how the iconic game came into his life at an early age and refused to leave. He didn't include Doomguy's midriff in the article, much to my chagrin, but I suppose it'd be less special if we highlighted it every time. id Software co-founder John Romero celebrated the anniversary by tweeting up a storm of behind-the-scenes pictures and art assets, some of which have never been seen before publicly. Yeah, you're gonna want to take a look at this. |
I don't know WTF #IDARB is but I want it Posted: 11 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST I've heard that title before, #IDARB. I know it's coming to Xbox One. But other than that, I'm clueless. Brett came into chat today wondering about it, and Nic said the game looked "amazingly silly" on Giant Bomb months ago. "I think [Iron Galaxy Studios CEO] Dave Lang pops up in it like the TOASTY guy in Mortal Kombat. So, Now that I've seen this trailer, I have a better (though still far, far from complete) understanding about #IDARB, "the number-one eSports, crowdsourced, Twitter-creeping, four-on-four multiplayer extravaganza." It's coming to Xbox One in February and will be free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers through Games with Gold. Which is good, because this seems like the type of thing people might scrunch their face at but would wind up enjoying if they took that initial chance.
| The real nightmare is that this special edition Bloodborne pack isn't coming to North America Posted: 11 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST European desks are about to get a little more cluttered with the announcement of a special “Nightmare Edition” of Bloodborne. The €119 set comes with a variety of doodads, including a spooky looking quill set and a tin box to store it all in that looks like a set of creepy books. There are some exclusive in-game items as well, such as custom skins for your ghostly “messengers” (which sound analogous to Dark Souls's orange soap stone messages between players). Sadly, a Sony representative confirmed to Destructoid that there are no plans to bring the Nightmare edition to North America, so you'll have to stop by Hot Topic if you really want a pen set with a little skull on it. I make fun, but I'm jealous. In brighter news, the Collector's edition of Bloodborne, which includes the art book and digital soundtrack from the Nightmare edition (but none of the other swag), will be available in North America for our enjoyment, as confirmed earlier this year (although the release date's changed to March 24). Usually I stay away from pre-order bonuses and special edition nonsense, but I think I'll make an exception in this case. If the included art book even comes close to the quality of the Dark Souls Design Works art books, it will be well worth bending the knee at my local EB. Oh well, I guess Europe had to put up with Jack the Ripper and Dracula, so we can let the babies have their bottle on this one. | The Evil Within's first DLC has the answers we're looking for Posted: 11 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST Oh, right -- there's a Season Pass for The Evil Within. The thought of paying $19.99 for three DLC packs when the game itself was just on sale for nearly that price is unappealing, but that's the situation. Part one, The Assignment, releases early next year. It's about Castellanos' partner Juli Kidman, as is the follow-up DLC, The Consequence. Bethesda has a short Q&A with developer Tango Gameworks' John Johanas about what's next for the story. "We definitely leave some of the mysteries open, but I feel we shed a lot of light on the lore of Ruvik, STEM, and the characters while asking (and answering) a whole new set of questions regarding Juli and her mission," he says. Gonna have to scour the wiki, then. The team was inspired by expansions "that give the player a new spin on gameplay, while still feeling connected to the main title," with examples like Pigsy's Perfect 10 for Enslaved and The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches for Dishonored cited. | Microsoft now accepts bitcoin for Windows and Xbox purchases Posted: 11 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST We get it; you're a hip cat. You got some of those bitcoins to your name. You also have a Microsoft account for purchasing content from the Windows and Xbox stores. The latter isn't so much because you're cool; it's because of your desire for a convenient marketplace for digital wares. What if there were a way to trade bitcoin for Microsoft's goods and services? That'd be some Blade Runner shit right there! Wait. That's an option now? Nevermind; that's some 2014 shit! Microsoft announced that starting today, it'd accept bitcoin in the US through BitPay. "For us, this is about giving people options and helping them do more on their devices and in the cloud,” said Eric Lockard, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Universal Store. “The use of digital currencies such as bitcoin, while not yet mainstream, is growing beyond the early enthusiasts. We expect this growth to continue and allowing people to use bitcoin to purchase our products and services now allows us to be at the front edge of that trend.” While bitcoin can be used to purchase Windows Store and Xbox Store goods -- including games, music, and movies -- the new plan doesn't encompass all Microsoft products. Still, it's the trendiest way you could imagine buying the new Taylor Swift album. Now you can exchange bitcoins to buy apps, games and more for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox [The Fire Hose] |
EA Sports UFC (and Bruce Lee!) join EA Access on December 18 Posted: 11 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST Damn. Started my last post about EA Access by admitting I keep forgetting the service exists, so it'd be poor form to do that again despite my continued forgetfulness. And now I've muddied this post by calling attention to that fact. Let's just look to the future already, shall we? EA's $4.99-a-month service for Xbox One grants subscribers full access to select games and, on December 18, EA Sports UFC joins that list of titles in The Vault. This is the one featuring eternal badass Bruce Lee as a playable character and detailed male nipples, so, cool.
Paid Don't Starve Together beta access coming Monday Posted: 11 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST I love that name, Don't Starve Together. Wonder if Steven likes it, too. This standalone expansion introduces multiplayer to Klei's unsettling world and, once released on Steam, it will be free for owners of the original game. But, in the mean time, there's a way to play early. On December 15, Klei will launch the Don't Starve Together Frontier Pack on Steam Early Access. It comes with one copy of Don't Starve, and two copies of Don't Starve Together (with immediate beta access). The Frontier Pack is $4.99 if you own the base game, or $19.99 if you don't. Klei says that "...there are a lot of people who really want into the beta, and even while giving out a hundreds of keys every day, it became clear to us that we needed a release valve for the demand. Specifically, people were starting to buy keys in back channels, with varying success. That's why we're now providing the Frontier Pack: a clear, official channel for access." Don't Starve is hard enough alone, but with multiple mouths to feed? This won't end well for me.
Damn, these 20 Just Cause 3 screenshots are so wonderfully Just Cause Posted: 11 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST Twenty Just Cause 3 screenshots surfaced today, and they look like absolutely anything you could ever want from a Just Cause game. There are lots of explosions, gliding through the air tethered to various objects, and more than one instance of shooting atop a bus. Subtlety never was Just Cause's strong suit. [Via Videogamer]
Nintendo Download: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy Posted: 11 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST The Wii U isn't looking good this week. All you're getting is Lucadian Chronicles, Angry Birds Star Wars, and Angry Birds Trilogy. Yep. Seriously. The 3DS however is rocking it as usual. The big drops include Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Xeodrifter, Harvest Moon 3 GBC, and Crash 'n the Boys Street Challenge. You'll also get Hazumi, I Love My Little Boy (haha what?), I love my Little Girl, I Love My Horse (demo), Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed, Moshi Monsters: Moshling Theme Park, My First Songs 2, Transformers Dark of the Moon, Talking Phrasebook - 7 Languages, and Wipeout 2.
Mojang's Scrolls launches today on PC, Android, and Mac Posted: 11 Dec 2014 03:30 AM PST Scrolls. Remember that game? The one that caused all that hubbub a few years back with Zenimax? It's finally coming out of beta and into a full-on release today. The full game will run you $4.99, and it will feature a "cap" of micro-transactions so it can't be pay-to-win. If you already own the alpha or beta you can access your full version for free now. Finally, a demo is available, but you'll have to register for a Mojang account first. Scrolls [Mojang]
Papers, Please was originally refused by Apple for pornographic content Posted: 11 Dec 2014 03:30 AM PST Papers, Please, Lucas Pope's 2013 indie standout about an immigration officer just trying to provide for his family, makes its debut on iPad tomorrow. However, the version available on the App Store will be slightly different than the one that released on all other platforms. According to a tweet from Pope, Apple originally rejected Papers, Please due to "pornographic content." The objectionable content in question relates to the game's body scanner, which is used to search some potential immigrants for contraband before they are allowed to enter Arstotzka. In supplementary tweets, Pope says that the stylized nudity will now be replaced be a light layer of underwear. He doesn't feel as if this is much of a sacrifice given that the original also had this option. While it's questionable as to whether this was an overreaction on Apple's part, the good to come out of this is that the game's rating was changed from 17+ to 12+, and it'll release timely on December 12. @dukope [Twitter]
What's your favorite NIS game ever? Posted: 11 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST Phew. I was scared there for a second. Even though NIS' newer catalog doesn't really match up to its older classics, we recently learned that the developer/publisher may go under if Disgaea 5 doesn't sell. Thankfully that turned out to be inaccurate, as president Sohei Niikawa was making an off-handed comment in regards to his own job. That got me thinking -- what is my favorite NIS game of all time? Like everyone else, at one point it was the first Disgaea game. It will go down in history as one of the most robust and enjoyable SRPGs ever made, and that signature wacky style is still hardly replicated (with success) today. Subsequent Disgaea games have made many improvements on the formula, but the original tale with the core cast was something special. Over time though, Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero is inching towards my favorite. I spent many, many hours with that game, and it has challenged me in all the right ways. I think as a general rule a lot of games are too simplistic, so Prinny was a breath of fresh air as it basically explains nothing, but still allows you to discover your own strategies and routes. The last boss is also one of my most memorable gaming moments. I remember mashing the attack button harder than I ever have in my entire life -- so much so that I had to take a break after my 50th attempt. Eventually I got him, and it was an amazing feeling of accomplishment. Too often games give you everything upfront. Breadcrumb trails to the next quest. Lengthy tutorial expositions late into a game. GameFAQs-esque libraries built into the UI that tell you everything you need to know. While that can be fine in moderation, I love it when games like the Souls series let you find all that out on your own, and it feels like you've earned something rather than have it handed to you. That's what a lot of NIS games represent to me, and I hope NIS sticks around for a while. What's your favorite?
The Talos Principle is out on Steam today, here's a launch trailer Posted: 11 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST Croteam's sharp departure from running and gunning The Talos Principle is out on Steam today. I think it is great, and I am not alone. It is probably the best puzzle game to come out this year, and it is certainly the game that has made me think the most. The trailer above gives a bit of setup to the narrative without giving away too much. There's a woman's voice, a man's voice, and some lasers. Lots and lots of lasers. The PlayStation 4 release of The Talos Principle is set for early 2015.
Crossing Souls Kickstarter down to the wire, may come to PS4 and Vita Posted: 11 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST From the first time I saw footage of Fourattic's nostalgia-bomb of an adventure game Crossing Souls on Kickstarter, I knew something special was going on. Apparently, so did Devolver Digital, as the publisher stepped in early to offer assistance with quality assurance, marketing, and other cost-prohibitive factors if the title managed to reach its modest funding goal of $45,000. Here we are, less than a week to go and surprisingly the title still hasn't hit the magic number. Honestly, I'm somewhat flummoxed as to why. Crossing Souls looks to me like it has the potential to capture some of that authentic '80s charm I lovingly associate with films from the era like The Goonies while at the same time rocking a gorgeous pixel art style that seems a perfect fit among Devolver's other neo-retro titles. While nothing's an absolute certainty at this point, it is looking likely that PS4 and perhaps Vita ports of the game may come about after the PC, Mac, and Linux versions are completed. In a recent email with the developers, Fourattic mentioned they've been in talks with Devolver about bringing the game over to Sony hardware, with the indie-friendly console manufacturer showing an early interest in seeing the title ported over. Perhaps it's a sign of Kickstarter fatigue setting in; or, as suggested by the development team, perhaps the Holidays are just a particularly tough time to launch a crowdfunding campaign. In any case, I'm hopeful they will pull through during this last week and make Crossing Souls a success.
Showtime Anytime app now available on Xbox One Posted: 11 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST Microsoft has just announced that the Showtime Anytime app is available on Xbox One. If you have a Showtime subscription through your cable company you can access it, allowing you to stream recent shows and a limited archive. I'm pretty jazzed for the app because this season of Homeland is actually good. Looking for something to watch on Showtime? I'd recommend The Affair (one of my current favorites), the first four seasons of Dexter, Californication, House of Lies, Masters of Sex, Penn & Teller: BS, and seasons one and four of Homeland. I haven't gotten around to Shameless yet because Anytime doesn't have seasons one and two. Showtime Anytime [Xbox Wire]
Amiibogeddon continues: more conflicting reports on the Holy Trinity, GameStop says they're gone Posted: 10 Dec 2014 11:55 PM PST Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Marth. Are they or aren't they discontinued? Recently, we've obtained conflicting information from Nintendo, PR, and multiple retail locations, so it's really hard to tell -- but we have a few more developments. One of our readers wrote into Nintendo's costumer service system, noting that he was a "long time Nintendo fan," and that the discontinued amiibo situation was "extremely disappointing." This is what Nintendo wrote back: "Thanks for writing. I'm sorry to hear you haven't been able to locate certain amiibo. I will make sure the appropriate departments at Nintendo are aware of your inquiry. Some amiibo were very popular at launch, but be assured that we have not discontinued any. It is possible that some amiibo in the United States, Canada and Latin America may not be available right now due to high demand and our efforts to manage shelf space during the launch period, but may return to these markets at a later stage. We are continually aiming to always have a regular supply of amiibo in the marketplace and there are many waves of amiibo to come. The distribution and availability of amiibo in other regions around the world may be different." That's after Toys"R"Us stated that they were no longer carrying those three, among reports from other, smaller retailers. To add fuel to the fire, I spoke with a trusted source at GameStop, and was told that "those three are no longer in the system country-wide, and we are no longer getting more stock in them indefinitely." Whatever the case may be, these three are rare, so if you can find them somewhere, get them. I also obtained some information about the amiibo Wave 2 set. According to my source, GameStop as a whole is no longer taking pre-orders on them, and they are not going to be restocked until after the holidays. Additionally, the Wave 2 figures will be broken up in many locations in the US. Three figures will be coming sometime in the next five days, and the rest will arrive later this month. If you're a collector, I'd make the effort to try and track down some pre-orders right now online -- Amazon still has a few Wave 2 pre-orders left.
