GaymerX secures funding for a third convention

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

GX3: Everyone Games has eclipsed its $80,000 Kickstarter goal with more than two days to spare. The convention will return to San Francisco in late 2015, where the organizers hope to provide a safe space for "everyone who feels like they've been left out of mainstream gamer culture."

Supporters now turn their attention to unlocking stretch goals, which include a developer-focused event and series of panels, as the campaign winds down in its final hours.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse launches next month

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT

WayForward is targeting a mid-October release for Shantae and the Pirate's Curse in the United States, the developer announced this week via Twitter. No word on a specific date just yet.

The studio also indicated the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platformer will have a later arrival across Europe and Australia due to the localization and submission processes. Please understand.

Playthrough: Destiny's Mars has cars, but not a single hot dog in sight

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT

I've come down with a bad case of Dumpster Mono, and Max Scoville is terrified of germs, so he made me stay home so he could play Destiny and call it 'work'. But, without my responsible guidance, he got tricked into playing co-op with a man named Steve, who he thought he knew, but turned out to be a complete internet stranger. That doesn't stop Max from missing a lot of shots, and misreading pertinent information.

The Tomorrow Children might just push me into buying a PS4

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

The Tomorrow Children was one of the more intriguing, albeit overlooked announcements out of this year's gamescom and the more I hear about it, the better it sounds. And there's plenty left to hear -- the team at Q-Games had orders from PlayStation 4 system architect Mark Cerny to create "something that was a bit different," according to founder Dylan Cuthbert. It shows.

"If you were to distil it down to the most action-based elements -- you explore the surrounding islands; you mine resources; you work out a way to get them back to town, then you use them to expand your town," he explained in an interview on the PlayStation Blog.

"You can even craft tree saplings and do some farming if you want to -- you can farm apples to feed the population you're restoring. The accumulation of all that is that you fight these marauding monsters who'll try to destroy your buildings. That's the base loop."

Beyond those mechanics and the gorgeous graphics made possible through cascaded voxel cone ray tracing, there's also a social side to The Tomorrow Children in that you'll be able to visit other players' towns. "It'll be more of a cooperative relationship at present, rather than antagonistic," said Cuthbert, "but we'll see where that goes after launch."

To that end, Q-Games is planning to issue updates "very regularly" post-release. "Being able to build giant robots, for example -- they can then go out and defend your town for you. There'll be big content like that, but lots of bits of small content too, such as being able to buy your own house on the black market, and then just going in there and hanging out, should you want to."

Between this and Bloodborne, I'll wind up with a PS4 before long. Both games hit next year.

Sakurai explains the lack of Ice Climbers in Super Smash Bros.

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

I'm satisfied with the Super Smash Bros. roster overall but sympathize with people whose favorite characters aren't returning. For instance, the Ice Climbers -- they're so precious!

Writing in Famitsu, game director Masahiro Sakurai explained that although the team was able to get the adorable duo up and running in the Wii U version, the same couldn't be said for the title on 3DS. It also didn't help that the Ice Climbers are considered lower priority for Smash Bros. since Popo and Nana don't have their own dedicated game on the way.

In his column, Sakurai also spoke more about the staggered releases, noting that if both versions of Smash were to launch simultaneously, it's likely the games would have been scheduled for next year instead. I'm sure glad that isn't the case. And hey, there's always the hope for DLC.

Team Fortress 2sdays: 9 things any TF2 player should know

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Happy Tuesday!

Welcome to another edition of Team Fortress Tuesdays! Shadow is back with us this week and he's here to talk about all sorts of stuff, such as Destiny, Smash, How I Met Your Mother and more, take it away, Shadow!

So Destiny finally launched and in Japan the new Smash Brothers is out, there is a lot coming down the pipe as far as games and that’s great! Every once in a while somebody posts a buzzfeed link to my feed on Facebook. I’ll usually check it out and have a chuckle at either how stupid it is or just shake my head at the thought that somebody was paid to put together a bunch of random How I Met your Mother gifs and relate it to college debt. I mean, who do I have to talk to in order to get a job stealing content from Reddit and Tumblr like that? I can make lists of things too you know;

How about a list of nine things any TF2 player should know? #1. Hats. #2. More Hats. #3 Yell medic a lot. #4-9 Even more hats. Boom, and nobody even had to pay me with a ham sandwich.

In all seriousness though I can’t wait to get my hands on a few things that are coming out soon, Shadow of Mordor is looking pretty sick in particular. Eventually I’d like to finally get a PS4 and get around to finally playing Last of Us as well as Destiny. Also it’s worth mentioning that a few members of Streamtoid will be showing off Iron Fisticle, a pretty sick twin stick shooter coming out soon. I’ll try to have more details ready about that soon though. As always, if you have any questions comments or concerns, feel free to drop a comment below or get a hold of one of the admins.

Top-down '70s heist simulator The Masterplan now available on Steam Early Access

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Shark Punch, a four-person studio operating out of San Fransisco, California and Helsinki, Finland has recently launched its lovely looking 2D tactical-action heist game on Steam Early Access.

The Masterplan is said to draw inspiration from well-known tactical turn-based games as well as Hollywood's classic heist films. If you noticed that the music and some aspects of the game's look have a certain Tarantinoesque feel to them, this isn't a coincidence. As it turns out, I learned today in an email exchange with co-founder Harri Manninen that the team are fans of the American filmmaker, and the aesthetics are somewhat influenced by his work.

The studio reports that that at launch, The Masterplan should have around 1.5 - 2 hours worth of playtime, but it will be updated every two weeks. Expect the title to evolve quite a bit during the Early Access phase. Also of note, the levels that are available in this build are sandbox in design, and are meant to be replayed several times so that you can experiment using different tactics to experience the various results.

In an interview with Counter Frag, CEO Jiri Kupiainen stated that The Masterplan isn't actually turn-based, but is more like "real-time with pause, except that you can't fully pause the game either -- just slow it down to bullet time." The reasoning behind this design choice is to try to strike a balance between being able to plan your next few steps, while still feeling the pressure of pulling off a heist in progress.

From what I've seen, this looks like it has a lot of promise. While perhaps not a perfect fit for what I'm looking for in an Early Access title, I'm not going to rule it out completely until I see more footage of it running in the next few weeks.

The Masterplan is available for both PC and Mac on Steam and the Humble Store. Linux support is coming soon and will most likely to be added before the title leaves Early Access.

Sakurai confirms the 'Pic of the Day' series will continue

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT

Originally, the "Pic of the Day" series that Super Smash Bros. producer Sakurai has been running on the Miiverse was only supposed to run for a few months. But due to overwhelming fan demand, the series continues, and will do so "at least" until the Wii U version is released.

He also drops a few more bits of info, noting that most of the pictures from here on out won't spoil anything for people outside of Japan, and that most of them will simply be comedic in nature. He also hints that the Wii U version of Smash Bros. will drop in Japan before anywhere else, just like the 3DS.

There's going to be a Bloodborne alpha

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Seeing the words "Bloodborne" and "alpha" together instantly cured my morning grogginess, but the feeling was fleeting: the "small-scale test" is only meant for European gamers, currently.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has sent email invitations to select gamers to participate in the Bloodborne alpha, with the message pointing to this PSN Beta site for registration.

I'm hopeful that similar to the Dark Souls II beta, North American players will get a chance to take part as well. This is one of those games you'll want to get your hands on early and often.

Possibly seizure-inducing arcade racer The Collider smashes into Steam today

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Shortbreak Studios, a part of Techland (Dead Island, Call of Juarez), has just released its PC port of the iOS and Android arcade racer The Collider today on Steam. You might recognize that name as the studio behind the mobile spin-off of Techland's Hellraid.

Described as "The fastest game on Steam," the premise of The Collider is to hop into a particle accelerator, travel at break-neck speeds while making split-second directional choices to avoid obstacles, all the while listening to hypnotic electronic music. The game starts off slowly enough, allowing you to get the feel for it, but before long has you racing at considerable speeds.

Based on what I've played this morning, The Collider seems like a wonderful little title to kick back and unwind with, and at the reduced launch price of two dollars, it won't be breaking your wallet.

The Collider launches today on Steam and is available for PC, Mac, and Linux.

Download Halo: Reach for free with Xbox Live Gold

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Now through September 30, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download Halo: Reach for free through Microsoft's Games with Gold program. And those of you with an Xbox One still have the rest of the month to nab the excellent Super Time Force. Just putting that out there.

Reach has the distinction of being the last Halo game I was even moderately into, though my memory of it is mostly hazy. I do recall struggling quite a bit toward the end of the game. Funny how of all the things I could remember about my playthrough, it ends up being the painful part.

Nintendo knows about the Smash 3DS Peach ban problem

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

As we previously found out, the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. 3DS is banning people for playing Peach online during competitive matches -- presumably because it mistook her turnip for an item hack.

Nintendo is now aware of the problem, has apologized, and is actively working on a fix -- it should be ready by next week. We can assume that it'll be solved by the time the game arrives overseas, which is good news.

Final Fantasy World Wide Words looks like fun for old-school fans

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Final Fantasy: World Wide Words is basically Typing of the Dead Square Enix style, and it's shaping up to be a treat for old-school fans. This new trailer shows off a bit of the gameplay, including some world map exploration, possible chocobo raising, and lots of combat. Typing combat.

Sure, it looks like a decent amount of assets were re-used from Theatrhythm, but if the game is fun enough on its own merits I'll be happy. We'll see.

Hearthstone now has 20 million players

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Blizzard has sent over word to Destructoid that Hearthstone now has 20 million players around the world. The game is free-to-play, allowing you to experience the entire game without paying, but forking over some cash will grant you new decks, as well as access to the Curse of Naxxramas expansion -- though everything can also be bought with in-game gold.

As a note, Blizzard says to look forward to the Android version of the game in the "not so distant future," as well as the iPhone edition.

Review: Destiny

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

It's been a small journey reviewing Destiny, but now I've experienced every facet of the game and I'm ready to make my decision. As mentioned previously, the story and setting leave a lot to be desired, but the gunplay is very sound, and the PVP element reminds me of some of my favorite shooters, filled with tons of exciting moments.

But even after digging into the nitty-gritty, the endgame structure is rigid and has too many problems at the current moment to warrant a full recommendation.

Sonic / Mega Man: Worlds Collide comic is getting a complete collection

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

The Sonic / Mega Man: Worlds Collide comic was pretty much everything I expected it to be. It was a perfect combination of two of my childhood icons, and it was enjoyable to read from start to finish.

Although there have been a few mini-collections that span several issues, Amazon has a listing for something called "The Complete Epic," which looks to be a giant book of the entire arc.

Allegedly ready to ship on May 26th, 2015 for $22, the collection will be 336 pages in all and will have all 12 issues. Even if you don't read the Mega Man or Sonic comic books I'd definitely give it a shot once the complete collection is out.

After less than week, Super Smash Bros. 3DS sold over one million

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

According to a statement from Nintendo, Super Smash Bros. 3DS sold one million copies during its launch in Japan. It's great news that the series can still create such a buzz and sell that much product.

The only thing that bums me out is that by the time the New 3DS hits in the US, all of the people I know will make the switch over to Smash Wii U full-time.

Later this year you'll be able to download Disney Infinity 2.0's Toy Box mode separately

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT

Later this month, Disney Infinity 2.0 will launch, allowing you to buy the core pack for $74.99. This will include a base, three figures, two extra Toy Boy levels, and an Avengers Play Set.

But a ton of you out there already own the base and a number of figures, so you may not necessarily want to spring for a full set just yet. Thankfully, later this year (November 4th) the Toy Box mode will drop as a separate download. It starts at $19.99 in price, and will arrive on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Wii U platforms.

For those of you who aren't aware, any toy can be used in Toy Box mode, so if you have a ton of extra figures and aren't all that interested in Marvel, you should take a look at this deal instead.

Final Fantasy XIV's patch 2.38 brings personal housing, new Relic quest extension

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Patch 2.4 for Final Fantasy XIV, which is set to bring the Ninja job and a ton of other content is still a tad off, but in the meantime patch 2.38 has dropped. Inside you'll find a number of quality of life updates, as well as personal housing (to add to the current guild housing system), and a brand new Relic questline -- the Nexus.

All of the other updates are pretty self-explanatory (hug and slap emotes are a thing now!), but the Nexus quest is purposely vague. It appears as if nearly every major event you do (dungeons, trials) will contribute to leveling up your weapon to i115. There's no word yet on how much each event contributes, as the patch notes say that it's up to the community to figure out the riddle.

Well, time to break out my Novus sword and shield and get to work.

Team17 to publish blind adventure Beyond Eyes

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 02:30 AM PDT

Team17 has really been branching out lately. Best known for the Worms series, the small developer has recently been publishing independently developed games from even smaller teams. Previously, we have heard about the studio helping with action-platformer Penarium and strategy-simulator Sheltered. Today, Team17 has announced that it will publish the blind-girl-navigating-the-world-to-find-her-cat title Beyond Eyes.

Developer tiger & squid originally ran an Indiegogo campaign for Beyond Eyes, but it was unsuccessful in reaching its €10,000 goal. With Team17 backing the project now, it looks like it is on track to release on PC and unspecified consoles in 2015.

Destiny's first raid, the Vault of Glass, opens today

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Today the first six-person raid opened up in Destiny -- the Vault of Glass. It's one of the events in the game that has no matchmaking function, so you'll have to use any number of third party tools to find friends, or do it the old fashioned way.

The raid will be open indefinitely, in case you were wondering. Technically you can enter it at level 24, but since you'll do a fraction of the damage you should at least wait until you're 26.

Our final Destiny review will drop later today now that I've had a chance to test out every facet of the game.

Image & Form goes to space with SteamWorld Heist

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Image & Form isn't following up its mining platformer SteamWorld Dig with a direct sequel, as much as that would have been a crowd-pleaser. But the studio is staying in the same universe with SteamWorld Heist, "a game about space adventures and survival."

Although you wouldn't know it from the trailer, this is a turn-based strategy title. The robots' home world is in ruins, and they've since moved to living on steam-powered spaceships. Players will recruit their own team of bots to board other ships and bases for precious water.

It's a shame the trailer cuts away from gameplay when it does. I'm real curious to see what the turn-based combat looks like. Platforms, pricing, and an exact release date for SteamWorld Heist haven't been announced, but Image & Form has committed to a spring 2015 launch.

Here's your Onechanbara Z2: Chaos box art

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Onechanbara Z2: Chaos' cover art has been revealed, and it's actually a lot less risqué than I thought it was going to be. I was hoping they'd just forgo clothes entirely -- you know, for sales. Just kidding. I actually like the artwork. It's quite simple and crisp. Should it ever come Stateside, you can bet they'll be given some generic background clipart.

The reversible, two-sided cover will feature Kagura and Aya on the front and Saaya and Saki on the back.

Onechanbara Z2: Chaos will ship in Japan on October 30 for PlayStation 4.
