Borderlands on PC is playable online again, now through Steamworks

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT

I know, I might be the only remaining person who cares, but Borderlands (that is, the original 2009 title) is now playable online on PC again.

I recently got a few of my friends into the series via Borderlands 2, and some of them want to go back and experience the original as a group. Naturally, this all happened right around the time GameSpy was shutting down. 2K Games assured players that the online functionality would be migrated to Steamworks, but no specific dates were given.

In an update today on the Steam Community, it was announced that the migration to Steamworks is complete. I briefly tried it out, and all of the functionality is integrated into the Borderlands user interface; no Shift + Tabbing for the Steam overlay is necessary. There are even several public games being hosted already. Apparently I'm not the only one.

Is anyone else not playing Destiny right now?

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

The Tokyo Game Show is almost here. We're on the cusp of cool gaming news, and lots of it, but until then the week is off to a slow start. Well, aside from Microsoft's acquisition of Minecraft maker Mojang and the hundreds of ensuing articles on sites many of us frequent.

Today seems super slow to me, even for a Monday. A large part of that is also due to the fact that millions of people are digging into Destiny, and I'm not one of them. I saw enough footage, heard enough opinions from critics and readers alike, that I'm not in a hurry to play "the most pre-ordered new IP in video game history." I want to see where it goes from here first.

Still, not participating in the launch of a long-awaited, oft-talked-about game like this makes me feel left out, for some silly reason, even knowing I'd likely be feeling buyer's remorse right about now had I gotten into Destiny on day one. Media consumption just isn't as enjoyable when you are off in your own little world, unwilling or unable to speak about a shared interest with others. It's why I was attracted to this job nearly eight years ago and have stuck with it.

So instead of talking about Bungie's latest like my peers, I'm over here playing Super Mario World for the, oh, I don't know -- 30th time? 40th? It's the first time I'll have cleared it on Wii U, at any rate. The first time I'll have felt a sense of connectedness while playing since I was a kid.

Looking through the Miiverse feed now, I see that someone is stuck in the dreaded Forest of Illusion, unable to find a secret level exit to escape the looping area. That a guy named Luis doesn't know how to reach Soda Lake using the jump-off-Yoshi trick. Heck, there are even multiple posts dedicated to the joys of Balloon Mario or, as one poster calls him, "fat Mario."

What a treat this is, being able to play a decades-old game "alongside" others. To that end, what are you into right now (even if it is Destiny)? Let's chat about it.

Max and Bill must kill the Moon-Princes

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT

Man, Destiny. I seriously can't remember the last game that I felt so ambivalent about, but was so completely hooked on. Here's me and Bill dicking around on the Moon and discussing our general thoughts on the game, and killing the Moon-Princes with a big dumb sword.

Is it a "Let's Play?" I don't know. But we're enjoying ourselves, and maybe you'll enjoy watching our enjoyment.

Review: Size DOES Matter

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Simple graphics, twitch gameplay, and fresh music constitute a good formula for mobile gaming. Titles like this allow for a quick bit of play during minutes of downtime, and can paradoxically keep players going for long periods of time, chasing a high score or trying to one-up a friend on the leaderboards.

Size DOES Matter follows in that legacy, with a unique gameplay hook and a pretty killer soundtrack. However, a few things hold it back from pure arcade bliss.

The new standalone Director's Cut of Shadowrun Returns' Dragonfall expansion is right around the corner, releasing this Thursday, September 18.

Before it does, I'd like to share some of the highlights from the last four developer diaries Harebrained Schemes has posted leading up to the title's launch.

Wolfire's cool, experimental FPS Receiver is free today

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Wolfire Games' Receiver is a first-person shooter unlike any other I've played.

Instead of a quick button press to reload your gun, here, reloading is a much more realistic, multi-step process that requires effort on your part. As in, you'll need to actually practice. Also, levels are randomized and there are creepy drones out to get you. Good luck!

You can and should experience Receiver, if only for a few moments, especially now that it's free through the Humble Store. Offer's good for today only. Be sure to redeem your Steam key by September 29.

This Far Cry 4 trailer is all about the elephants

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

Even when Far Cry 4 was officially nothing more than message-board rumors, I was all about the elephants. It's nice to see Ubisoft give the people want they want, then, by putting out a trailer that's devoted to these animals (minus the continued plugs for pre-ordering).

That line at the end about elephants never forgetting has me thinking back on when I might have first encountered the saying. This is going to drive me nuts all day long, I just know it.

Took long enough! Left 4 Dead 2 uncensored in Australia

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

It's sad that Australian gamers are only now getting an uncensored version of Left 4 Dead 2, but at least we finally have some closure. After resubmitting the cooperative zombie shooter for classification, Valve is now able to sell an R18+ version of the PC game in the country.

Existing players will be able to update to the uncut version for free on Steam. Simple as that.

The good news doesn't stop there, either: Left 4 Dead 2 is on sale for $4.99 until September 22.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 for some reason

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Torn Banner Studios is bringing its first-person medieval combat multiplayer game Chivalry to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall by way of publisher Activision.

While it's nice to have this sort of title available on consoles, given the choice, you'd want to get it on PC instead for the Steam sale price and mod support. Gotta have mods.

I'd probably be more forgiving of the lateness of these ports if it were also coming to PS4 and Xbox One -- Chivalry launched on PC almost two years ago -- but someone must've crunched the numbers and determined that last-generation systems were the way to go.

Mega Man 7 is out now on the Wii U Virtual Console

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

One of the most polarizing Mega Man titles is out now on the Wii U Virtual Console -- Mega Man 7. Not only did it employ a wholly different graphical style, but it also took some pretty neat risks, like the game's ending and the hidden Street Fighter-esque multiplayer mode.

Whatever side of the fence you're on, it's nice to have the game finally available to pick up digitally.

Watch Dogs: Bad Blood goes punk, features co-op play and new modes

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

Say what you will about Ubisoft, but they've got a knack for trying something a little different for their DLC offerings. After the incredibly successful launch of Watch Dogs back in May, it seemed like they've been biding their time with the release of some smaller DLC packs to one of their best-selling new titles. With so much content packed in Watch Dogs, I was curious to see how a single-player campaign DLC can stack up.

But now, it seems Ubisoft felt that four months was enough for players to explore the city of Chicago as Aiden Pearce. With a new playable character, a new set of tools, and new missions to dive into; players can see the streets of Chicago through a fresh perspective, and can even bring a friend along for the ride.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS online play allegedly auto-banning Peach

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT

Is Peach your main in Smash Bros.? Well in Japan, she appears to be encountering an issue while playing online -- she's getting banned constantly. Multiple Japanese players are reporting that they are getting 24 hour bans for playing the character, possibly due to her turnip move being identified as an item (which is detected as a hack in the "no items" Final Destination mode).

I know what you're thinking -- fighters like Link have "items" too! Well it could be anything related to Peach's character, but it's unique to her at the moment. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

Final Fantasy XIV kicks off Dragon Quest crossover event

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Square Enix has started the Dragon Quest X crossover event in Final Fantasy XIV, bringing over Golem enemies into the world of Eorzea. You can start the quest over in Ul'dah, which leads to a series of FATE battles for a unique helmet item and a Golem minion.

You can also pick up a nifty King Slime Crown without doing the quest. It's a pretty neat (and short) questline that's worth logging in for.

It's official: Microsoft bought Mojang, creator of Minecraft

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 01:15 AM PDT

[Update: Microsoft's Phil Spencer and Notch have chimed in with their own statements. Spencer is obviously excited (and confirms that Minecon still exists), and Notch gives us a look at his mindset over the past few years, as well as were he's headed.]

The rumors are real -- Mojang has confirmed that they are being bought by Microsoft for a "smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars."

In a post to fans, representatives of the company noted that "Minecraft has grown from a simple game to a project of monumental significance. Though we’re massively proud of what Minecraft has become, it was never Notch’s intention for it to get this big. As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He’ll continue to do cool stuff though. Don’t worry about that."

According to the post, the development and support of Minecraft on the PC, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android platforms will continue. Minecraft will also "continue to evolve," and it is predicted that the "majority" of Mojang's staff will continue to work there. Notch, Carl, and Jakob, the founders, are leaving. The fate of their other game, Scrolls, is still up in the air -- my guess is if it's doing poorly Microsoft will can it and focus more on Minecraft.

Well, that's interesting. We'll see how this goes, and it's a real testament of how powerful AAA publishers are -- Minecraft was one of the prime examples of how sustainable independent development was in the industry.

Get a closer look at the four playable characters in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Gearbox Software has been slowly releasing a four-part behind-the-scenes series of videos on the making of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, leading up to the title's October 14 release. Episode One looked at the initial announcement, while Episode Two focused on the gameplay features that resulted in setting it on Pandora's moon Elpis. Today, Episode Three released, and it highlights the four playable characters.

In the video, various Gearbox and 2K Australia employees discuss how the four characters were decided upon, and how they feel to play. Special attention is given to Claptrap's nutso disco ball, which is only one of many possible action skills he can sport.

Given the rate at which these are releasing, we can probably expect the final video in this series, titled "Weapons and Post-Launch," to show up just a few days before the game itself.

Science-themed runner Boson X coming to Steam tomorrow

Posted: 15 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT

After hearing about it from iOS users, I was excited late last year when Boson X first came to Android, my mobile platform of choice. A few months later, I finished the six levels included in the Android version and discovered the X Boson. Now, it looks like I will be starting anew, because the no-nonsense runner is coming to Steam, and it has some new stuff to show off.

Most notably, the number of levels has tripled to eighteen, with some really wild looking stuff thrown in. From the trailer and the screenshots, I spot a level with only two platforms instead of the usual eight, a trippy monochrome level, and a couple new characters.

Boson X releases on Steam tomorrow for $2.99, and will feature full controller support and include those delicious Steam Trading Cards.
