Dekamari Senran Kagura is a rhythm cooking battle game Posted: 08 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST Senran Kagura is getting three brand new games, you perverts. Dekamori Senran Kagura is the most absurd of the bunch (which is saying something). It's a rhythm cooking game for the PlayStation Vita and PSP, categorized as a "hyper big-breasted cooking-rhythm game" according to Famitsu. Expect this one to be released in Japan on March 20. Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is a side-scrolling 3D action game for the 3DS made by the same team that made Senran Kagura Burst. It also features two male characters, on top of all the big-breasted women for once. This one is scheduled for an August 7 release. Lastly there's Senran Kagura: Estival Versus coming out to various PlayStation devices. So there you go. A flood of boob games are coming to a console near you soon. Pervs. |
Adding voice chat to Rust helped curb in-game homicide Posted: 08 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST Speaking with PC Gamer about the open-world survival title Rust, Gary Newman of Facepunch Studios said that for as cutthroat as the game can be given the freedom it grants players, "People should be nice to each other because they get a nice feeling from being nice. There shouldn't be a system hanging around forcing people to be good. It removes a lot of gameplay fun. "One of the things we did that made a huge difference here unexpectedly was add voice chat. A lot of the time players attack each other out of fear. They don't want to be the person to die. Being able to talk to the other guy and feel them out that way makes a huge difference." It's descriptions like this of people being people in a virtual world that has me interested to play Rust, if admittedly a little scared as well. "When any player can kill you easily -- and they don't, it's like the biggest compliment ever," explained Newman. "They become good friends. You go to bed, and lie there and think to yourself 'that was a nice guy, I hope I run into him again.' It's a very weird feeling to be having in a game." Assassin's Creed Liberation looks way better in HD Posted: 08 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST Assassin's Creed Liberation is making the jump from handheld to consoles and PC. Liberation HD is completely remastered visually, and Ubisoft released some new screenshots to show off how much prettier the game looks. Otherwise it plays exactly the same, with no other new additions. So if you already played through this, you may want to skip it. Otherwise it's going to be $19.99 when it's released on the PC, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade later this year. |
What happens when you try to interview people in Rust? Posted: 08 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST Man, that guy REALLY loves his rock. And yes, as Rust and DayZ gain more momentum, you can expect to see a lot of these type of videos appearing all over. Rust and DayZ are this year's "Hey look at what I made in Minecraft" content generators. |
DayZ gang forces players into life or death duel Posted: 08 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST The new crop of open-world titles, like Day Z, give interesting insight into the people who play games. Take this roving gang of players as an example, who have encountered two people wearing the same color jacket and determine that they should fight to the death for the privilege of being allowed to continue to wear it. Here they are, playing a game in which exerting power over others violently seems to be the primary method of advancement, and instead use that power to create amusement. It's still cruel, yet it seems altogether generous at the same time. Out of the three people held at gunpoint, only one is killed and it's done through adherence to a few defined rules. The gang even awards an additional prize to the winner, as if not killing and looting them weren't enough. It's the very definition of emergent play, a game borne of circumstances and opportunity rather than predetermination. Pretty funny too. |
Your first look at the SOCOM spiritual successor, H-Hour Posted: 08 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST H-Hour: World's Elite is the spiritual successor to the SOCOM franchise. After the studio went up, the team reformed into Special Operations Forces Studios and created a Kickstarter for a new third-person military shooter. The team met their funding goal last year and now we're seeing the first footage of H-Hour. The gameplay video here is all in pre-alpha, and it's looking pretty promising. . |
Take on monsters in the Witcher Adventure Game Posted: 08 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST Whilst fantasy RPG fans like myself bide their time until the arrival of The Witcher 3 later this year, we might have another game set in the world of Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher Adventure Game isn't actually a point-'n'-click title, it's the name of an upcoming board game being developed by Fantasy Flight Games along with CD Projeckt RED. With the ability to level up a character and go on a variety of different quest types, it looks like the board game has all the elements of the games. Players can take their pick of four of the franchise's stalwart characters: Geralt, naturally, along with the sorceress Triss, the bard Dandelion, and the Dwarven warrior Yarpen Zigrin. Along with the actual board game, a digital version to play on either iOS or Android tablets will be available too. There have been a few interesting videogame-based boardgames to have come out recently (yes I know The Witcher is based on a series of books, pedants) but I've not tried any of them out, partly due to price and partly down to a lack of fellow players. Maybe a digital version might be the way to go here unless any of you guys fancy heading round to my house to play. |
Atomic Poison Ivy is basically a plant spider thing Posted: 08 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST Atomic Wonder Woman? Badass. Atomic Green Lantern? Awesome. Atomic Poison Ivy? Umm. Up until now the Atomic versions of DC heroes you'll be able to play as in the Infinite Crisis MOBA have been pretty great. So the reveal of Atomic Poison Ivy is kind of a bummer. Mostly because she looks ridiculous walking around with her spider-like plant legs. |
Even without Plus, Don't Starve is worth playing on PS4 Posted: 08 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST If you happen to be a PlayStation 4 owner who has yet to play Klei Entertainment's excellent Don't Starve, you are in for a real treat this week. PlayStation Plus members in particular should just go ahead and download it blindly since it's available for free as a recent addition to the service. The less you know about this weird, cruel, compelling game, the better. As a result, I've kept this little impressions piece about the new console port free of spoilers. |
Playing Call of Duty with the Gamertag 'Xbox Sign Out' Posted: 08 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST Okay, this is a fun little trick. YouTuber Master of Luck has taken to playing Call of Duty: Ghosts with the Xbox Live Gamertag "Xbox Sign Out." In a multiplayer setting like this where players are prone to shouting each other's names and the Kinect is listening for voice commands, sign-outs are bound to ensue. Even when people know what's up, they still inexplicably say the magic words. I like that everyone who fell for the prank seemed to find it humorous. I wonder if that was truly the case, or if a bunch of genuinely angry folks didn't make it into this video. |
The intro for the Dark Souls II digital comic is out now Posted: 08 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST Namco Bandai has released the first few pages of the Dark Souls II digital comic, titled "Into the Light." It's written by Rob Williams and Andi Ewington, and you can find it here on the official Facebook page. It appears as if new pages will be revealed bi-weekly, so check back occasionally to get the full tale as the game heads into a March 14th launch date. A date that I can't wait for, by the way! You can buy this: Mario and Luigi 3DS XL bundle $50 off Posted: 08 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST Remember the pretty 3DS XL pictured above? I think it's the best looking special edition 3DS XL, personally. Remember how the bundle was $200? Now it's $150 at Wal-Mart, Tiny Cartridge reports. Probably because no one wants that second fiddle Mario on their cool, Luigi-branded 3DS. Aside from the cool console, the bundle comes with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team installed and a 4GB SD card. If you don't have a 3DS, maybe you should buy this. There are a bunch of awesome games on it. $150 for Mario & Luigi 3DS XL bundle [Tiny Cartridge] |
Here's 30 minutes of footage from Dreamfall Chapters Posted: 08 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST There's not been a lot of news about the upcoming Dreamfall Chapters but now we've got a 30-minute look at a section of the game, along with commentary from design director Martin Bruusgaard and creative director Ragnar Tørnquist. Despite this being pre-alpha footage, with placeholder art and voices, you can see the approach to character and dialogue that developer Red Thread is going for. I particularly like the idea of seeing a character's inner monologue shaping the dialogue instead of simplistic and vague responses that can sometimes be misleading. The previous Dreamfall titles were praised for their dialogue and stories more than the actual mechanics and that looks like it's staying the same with these new episodic titles. It would have been nice to see some more of series mainstay Zoe Castillo but I'm thinking she might be hidden away until Dreamfall Chapters is a bit closer to completion. |
Yakuza Restoration has a character that uses a cannon Posted: 08 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST A new developer video has surfaced for Yakuza Restoration, and it shows off a great deal of the nuts and bolts of the game (like skills and the XP system), as well as a character named Ryoma who can use a ton of oddball weapons like a giant cannon and a flaming sword. "Orbs" are now a new mechanic, which allows you to unlock certain skills by placing them in your skill tree -- kind of like Final Fantasy VII's Materia. It'll drop on February 22nd on the PS3 and PS4 in Japan. Fat chance of it ever coming to the US. Yakuza Restoration’s Ryoma Is So Strong, He’ll Carry An Entire Cannon Into Fights [Siliconera] |
Telltale would love the chance to make a James Bond game Posted: 08 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST Telltale Games is on something of a roll right now; along with Fables: The Wolf Among Us and the second season of The Walking Dead, it has upcoming series based on Borderlands and Game of Thrones. But if money and the required licensing deals were no issue, then 007 himself would star in Telltale's dream game. The studio's co-founder Kevin Bruner has told OXM that he's a big James Bond fan and that's he's been disgruntled at how the super spy has been portrayed in previous videogame outings. "I'm always frustrated by games that make him a mass murderer," he explains. "He's a super-spy, and that's a different skillset." Whilst Goldeneye is rightly revered, I get where Bruner is coming from; Bond movies aren't about high body counts and it's the actual spying parts that are the best. Kevin also explains why Telltale hasn't developed its own IP, despite the studio's growing success. "Licensing has played an important part in enabling this company to do as much as it's done without having to create a new IP wholecloth, which is a big undertaking with a lot of associated risk." Regardless of how much you like or dislike the mechanics of the Telltale games, I think most folks would agree the studio never tarnishes the IP that it is adapting. However, I think it would be just be a matter of time before they branch out and create their own games. Walking Dead developer would love to make a James Bond game [OXM] [Image source] |
Oculus VR will be developing games in addition to tech Posted: 08 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST The company behind the Oculus Rift, Oculus VR, is apparently developing games internally for the device. It makes perfect sense given that John Carmack is now fully involved with the project, not to mention the other developers that Oculus VR has scooped up over the years. Apparently Carmack's role may be more software oriented than we thought, as CEO Brendan Iribe (speaking to Engadget) stated, "his heart and soul [Carmack] and history certaintly lies with the game-development side. That's always been Epic's philosophy. It's been John Carmack's philosophy -- you gotta eat your own dog food here, and develop internal content." 2014 will be a pretty exciting year for the Rift. It's starting to catch on in more mainstream outlets (it was heavily discussed on a recent episode of ABC's Shark Tank), and more people are starting to buy into it. All that's left for many of you out there is to get your hands on a final retail model. Internal game development at Oculus VR is already happening [Engadget] |
Hardline live: CES, PlayStation Now, and Alien: Isolation Posted: 08 Jan 2014 04:45 AM PST Gosh, it's been a long time. With Christmas, New Year's, and not a heck of a whole lot to talk about in the world of videogame news anyway, we've been on a long break from recording our podcast Hardline. Please join me for a chat with Hamza, Steven, and Conrad on Twitch.tv at approximately 11:00am Pacific as we record this week's episode live. Scheduled topics today include Sony's cloud gaming service PlayStation Now, the assortment of Steam Machines shown at CES 2014, Razer's bizarre-looking modular PC, Alien: Isolation, and our most-wanted games of this new year. But, of course, we're always appreciative of any questions you want to throw our way. |
Here is racing on three 4K screens Posted: 08 Jan 2014 04:39 AM PST At Nvidia's CES booth, Project Cars is running on 3 4K screens here -- 4K surround, if you will. That means you're seeing 11,520 by 2,160, or 1.5 billion pixels per second! I gave it a spin on an Origin PC running quad-SLI, using 4 GTX Titans. Overkill on top of overkill? Yeah. But it was still pretty impressive. At high speed, all that detail goes whizzing by, though. I still want it. Project Cars releases later this year. |
New FPS Get Even blends single- and multiplayer Posted: 08 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST Painkiller: Hell and Damnation and Deadfall Adventures developer The Farm 51 is striving for photorealism in its new game, Get Even, with the use of 3D scanning. There's no denying that the environmental shots look ridiculously good, but what of the actual, well, gameplay? Get Even is a first-person shooter that doesn't make a distinction between single-player and multiplayer -- it's all combined, to the point where other player characters can literally appear as enemies in your game. Also, there are guns that can fire around corners and can be linked with your character's in-game smartphone. Yeah. Super weird, but I'm kind of into it. The Farm 51 says this will be out next year for next-gen consoles and PC. I'm curious to hear more about the plot, which is said to "[revolve] around the memories of its central heroes which have a dramatic effect on how the game progresses. The route the player chooses to follow determines their personality as the game unfolds." |
Mad Agents is now free on iOS with controller support Posted: 08 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST Yesterday I showed you a small little free iOS game that payed homage to Mega Man's 8-bit era. Today, I have another free game for you that plays a bit like the original Bubble Bobble -- Mad Agents. It plays like a very simplistic platformer, and takes place in self contained action-puzzle stages just like Bubble Bobble. You'll take on bosses, grab a variety of power-ups, and try to blast your way to each goal with dynamite. I've been playing a bit of it over the past day or so and it's pretty fun -- especially at the always loveable price of "free." If you collect every crystal a two-player mode will unlock, so there's also something to strive for. It also just added controller support! Mad Agents [Apple] |
Double Dragon: Neon coming to Steam with online co-op Posted: 08 Jan 2014 03:45 AM PST Midnight City has announced the PC version of Double Dragon: Neon and the big new addition for Steam is the inclusion of online cooperative play. That's more than enough reason to play this again, in part, for its killer soundtrack. The brawler is coming soon to the platform for $9.99 and, what the hell, Max Scoville is in this trailer wearing a pizza shirt. I went into Neon thinking it was dumb, and while I still believe that's true, it wasn't long at all before my cynicism melted away. This is best played with a bro, so be sure to get one. You'll see. |
Play Winnose, reunite a moai statue with his other half Posted: 08 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST Adult Swim always seems to publish games that have really strange setups, but are backed by solid gameplay mechanics and can easily eat up an afternoon or possibly even a work day. Winnose, developed by Todd Luke, appears to continues that tradition. In Winnose, you control a living moai statue who has lost his other half and must find it through "giant body part avoidance." Basically, enemies move according to a simple patterns or rules, and the moai head needs to get to the end without touching them. The soundtrack deserves special mention, with its almost dirty sounding main theme "Snot My Problem" filled with unusual percussion, followed by a crazily energetic J-pop track out of nowhere. It certainly fits the strangeness of Winnose pretty well. If you are interested, you can play Winnose right now on Adult Swim Games. |
Rhianna Pratchett is not involved with Mirror's Edge 2 Posted: 08 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST When Mirror's Edge 2 was announced I was floored, because the original is one of my favorite games of all time. Why? Because I felt like it was a puzzle game first and foremost, and that the Time Trials were the heart of the game. It was a thrill to be able to look at a giant playground so to speak and "figure out" what path was the fastest to the goal -- it's why the abstract DLC levels were my digital home for essentially a full month. I also had a dream once of my "perfect game" a decade ago and it was basically Mirror's Edge, so there. Having said that, I really disliked pretty much anything having to do with the narrative or the writing (whoever's fault that ultimately was). It was a bland, "been there done that" dystopian tale that actually brought the game down to the point where people didn't even bother to try the Time Trials, which is a shame. Famed game writer Rhianna Pratchett co-developed that story, but it appears as if she won't be returning for Mirror's Edge 2. We'll see what that means for the sequel soon enough. I'm just glad it's a reboot, because scrapping all of the lore of the original is for the best. Rhianna Pratchett [Twitter] (Thanks Jeff!) |
Two Tribes proper shuts down, opens smaller studio Posted: 08 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST Two Tribes, developers of the well known Toki Tori series, has shut down developmental operations. It appears as if founders Martijn Reuvers and Collin van Ginkel are creating a smaller company, with all of the new knowledge they've acquired from their mistakes at Two Tribes. The main reason they went under it seems, is that Toki Tori 2 took longer to develop than they had hoped, and when it didn't sell well, it "took the company down with it." Their games won't disappear from the Wii U eShop or any other marketplaces anytime soon since they have maintained the publishing rights for them. They're also hard at work on their next game, which is a 2D side-scrolling shooter. It's a pretty sad situation, but I'm glad that at least some people were able to avoid a complete dissolution of the company. We’re Rebooting! [Two Tribes] |
It looks like Inazuma Eleven is coming to North America Posted: 08 Jan 2014 12:14 AM PST Nintendo has mysteriously posted a listing for an Inazuma Eleven game, and it looks like it's coming to North America in the first quarter of 2014. Unless it's a mistake, we're going to get a game based on the soccer anime for the 3DS at some point this year. All signs point to Inazuma 3, which was released in Europe late last year. I know some of you don't care about sports, but this has role playing elements, guys! Nintendo Release Calendar [Nintendo via Tiny Cartridge] |
20 minute video shows how Mega Man: The Board Game works Posted: 07 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST The folks over at Jasco have put together a rather lengthy video of a playthrough of Mega Man: The Board Game. It'll take you through setup, a typical turn, how the pieces look while in play, and pretty much everything in-between. Although it may be a tad complicated for people who don't play board games, I'm digging it. The board and cards all look great and authentic, and there's enough depth there to make it last past one or two "novelty" playthroughs. Hopefully we'll get a chance to play the real thing sooner than later. |
PS3 players of Payday 2 get free Sweet Tooth mask DLC Posted: 07 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST Another creepy clown visage is now available in the PlayStation 3 version of Payday 2, and one fans of Sony should be well familiar with. Sweet Tooth, the lovably psychotic burning clown thing from the Twisted Metal series, gets a nod in free DLC released today which offers his face as another horrifying mask option for your character. Sweet Tooth still gives me the willies. It's one thing to have a horrible clown, but when you have muscular (one might say, "ripped") clown, that's a whole other level of childhood insecurity being represented. And does it matter to the gents down at the pub how big the clown that kicked your ass was? Nooooooo! It's all just, "look at the little pansy lad, got taken to the cleaners by a clown." |
Nyko shows off their first nex-gen accessories Posted: 07 Jan 2014 06:49 PM PST We met with Nyko today at CES to get a look at their first accessories for next-gen consoles. The PS4 gets an Intercooler this spring, with the price set at around $25. Just like Nyko's PS3 version, the PS4 Intercooler attaches to the system and uses small fans to draw hot air out and away from the system to keep it cool. This model plugs right into the back of the PS4 with a power passthrough feature, so no extra cables or connections are needed. Both the PS4 and Xbox One get Charge Base charging docks. These let you attach a small dongle and then drop two controllers into the base for charging without the need for Micro USB cables. A low profile sled design lets you stash the whole rig right alongside your consoles in your entertainment center. The PS4 gets a PowerPak that doubles the battery life of the DualShock 4. It attaches to the rear of the controller, interfacing through its Micro USB port. It adds a bit of thickness to the middle rear, but doesn't get in the way of your grip. What's neat is that the Charge Base dongle fits nicely onto the PowerPak, letting you charge it just as easily. The PowerPak is set to release this spring for about $20. Finally, while not necessarily nex-gen, the Smart Clip lets you attach your phone to the DualShock 4. This new one lets you use your phone in both landscape and portrait mode, as some second screen apps only work in the latter mode. For games that do support second screen, this lets you use the feature without needing to put down your controller and pick up your mobile device. |
Up close and personal with Razer's Project Christine Posted: 07 Jan 2014 06:20 PM PST At CES today, Razer snuck us in to get a closer look at their newly unveiled modular PC concept, which they've codenamed Project Christine. We got to talk to them about how this odd looking tower of blocks would work, and then we got to get up close to take some pictures. I got in trouble for touching it! |
