| Alien: Isolation art seems to show Ripley's daughter Posted: 09 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST Artwork for the trademarked but not-officially-announced Alien: Isolation has been discovered by NeoGAF. In addition to the image above, there's what looks to be the game's box art, viewable below. It's a miniscule picture, but I like the look of it -- not that cover art has any bearing whatsoever on the quality of the software it's attempting to sell us on. Isolation is thought to be developed by Total War studio Creative Assembly and reportedly stars the daughter of franchise icon Ellen Ripley. I don't know exactly what her offspring might look like, but if I had to go out on a limb, I'd say the woman depicted on the box art looks about right. Alien Isolation artwork leak [NeoGAF] |
| New horror game Kodoku announced for PS4 and PS Vita Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST Independent developer Carnivore Studio has announced they are working on a game bound for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita next year. According to details provided by Pocket Gamer, the title will feature stealth-based gameplay as players explore an island filled with otherworldly creatures drawn from Japanese myth in search of a rare book. The art looks pretty cool, and I enjoy the idea of stealth being the only recourse (as the player is reported to have no weapons, though some sorcery will be afoot), as it seems all too often the case in stealth games today that sneaking can be an afterthought for the player. But don't get too terribly excited. Carnivore doesn't plan to release the game until 2015 and there's a whole lot that can happen in that time. Until then, here's hoping for the best. | Frostivus isn't cancelled! The Dota 2 holiday begins soon Posted: 09 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST Last year, Frostivus, what I assume to be the most amazing Dota 2 holiday ever, was CANCELLED due to those jerk Greevils. Then we had the "Greevling" instead, which was a decent alternative game mode for a while, though it largely depended on how awesome your Greevil was. Regardless, that's all in the past now! This year, Frostivus is good to go and, just like the blog post says, nothing can possibly go wrong. Nothing. Also, ranked matchmaking is finally coming to Dota 2. It's detailed in another blog post, here, with plenty of charts and graphs to hold your attention. This will allow better matchmaking between players, and it looks like Valve is putting a lot of data-driven work into this. Best of all, your "ranked MMR is visible only to you and your friends." Hooray! Now I can't get yelled at by everyone else in my game for having a low number! |
| Mikami: It's become harder to make players afraid Posted: 09 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST I've got high hopes for Tango Gameworks' The Evil Within. It's the return of Shinji Mikami and, hopefully, big-budget survival horror. Games like Outlast have scared us silly, but it's also possible to point to series like Dead Space as evidence that gamers are quick to catch on. Once we discover the game's behind-the-scenes logic, it's all over. No more suspension of disbelief. "Not much has changed when it comes to instilling terror in the player," Mikami told Edge. "But people have got used to the tropes of horror and they know what's coming next, so in that sense it is harder to make them afraid." What's the solution? He didn't elaborate. But based on what Tango has shown of The Evil Within, the key seems to lie in creating a sense of tension where we're left holding on for dear life. Seemingly unstoppable forces like Boxman will help there. I'm more concerned about the action-oriented elements and how they'll be balanced with the game's survival horror. Father of survival horror Shinji Mikami promises fresh terror with The Evil Within [Edge] |
| Colossal Shadow of the Colossus fan art is just that Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST DeviantArt member Andrew McGee has visualized each of the various Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus into one image, showing exactly how they compare to one another in scale. It's a breathtaking image, especially when you consider how large your own character is in comparison, let alone how big these dang things would be in real life. Man, that underground still gives me creep-crawly nightmares. Epic does not begin to describe the scope of all of them together, but if you'd so chose, you can adorn your wall with a poster size print from here, or just check out the hi-res version from Andrew's DeviantArt page. |
| Grand Theft Auto V's Trevor tries to ditch a body in skit Posted: 09 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST I am not a big fan of Nathan Barnatt. More specifically, I find the character he portrays at gaming events (Keith Apicary, a self-unaware trainwreck of socially inappropriate behavior paired with a nasty vocal defect) to be rather lacking in the humor department. But it's not all bad, apparently, as evidenced by this latest reality pranking video Barnatt has released where he assumes the role of Trevor from Grand Theft Auto V and tries a myriad of ways to dispose of a corpse. Props to the other people in the video who opted to humor Barnatt, also. It seems like everyone took this in stride as the absurd situation it is, and their straight play with him does a fine job of generating chuckles. |
| One Mr Bean talks Namco, T.F., Bullet Hell, and more Posted: 09 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST 8 days ago on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we welcomed Michael Molinari to the program. Michael has been developing games since high school, starting the the Team Fortress fan games T.F. Larry: Guard Duty and its sequel T.F. Larry: Reinstatement. Inspired by the increasing quality of CGI special effects in films such as Spider-Man, a lifelong passion for Basketball, and of course, a love of videogames, Michael set out into the world of videogame development. This led to a career of balancing more personal projects like How My Grandfather Won The War, [Together], ...But That Was [Yesterday], and BasketBelle with work at Namco Bandai's now defuncted iOS division. It sounds like Michael learned a lot from his time at Namco, mostly about how not to do things. From being blocked off from utilizing Namco's most iconic I.P.s, to seeing the creator of such hits as Mr. Driller shuffled into positions far below his worth (mywords, not Michael's), there were many fore-tellers of doom to be seen, and Michael was their to witness them all first t first hand. After rapping up work on Rocket Fox, the iOS studio at Namco-Bandai was closed, and Michael was off on his own. That led him to Adult Swim Games and the release Soundoger+ -- a love letter to high intensity rhythm games like Pump it Up and pacifist bullet hell shmups like Ikaruga. We discussed all these things, plus Michael's thoughts on the importance of streaming and local multi-player in his life, the joy of discovering new ways to experience games (like the Green Demon challenge in Super Mario 64), suffering the bad fortune of being in the first batch of Steam Greenlight games, and a lot more. Thanks again to Michael for appearing on the show, and be sure to tune in next week when we Adult Swimember continues with the Crazy Viking Studios, creators of Volgarr the Viking. |
| Here are your favorite gaming moments of 2013! Posted: 09 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST Last week, we asked you to share your favorite gaming memories of the year with the community, and the response was FANTASTIC! Seriously, the love you people expressed for some of your favorite games of 2013 was downright moving, and I enjoyed reading each and every comment. Here's a brief recap of some of your responses. WARNING: Spoilers abound for many new games, so read with caution! |
| Live show: Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) Posted: 09 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] It's Monday again, so you know what that means for Mash Tactics, yup, another day of showcasing cheap-ass games old and new, for gamers on a budget. Tonight we'll be diving back into one of David Cage's earliest projects, Fahrenheit, known as Indigo Prophecy in the states. Now, while this game doesn't feature quite as many emotions or polygons compared to some of the newer titles from Quantic Dream, and the story goes completely bat-sh*t insane at the end, it's still one of my favorites from the team that created the 'interactive drama' genre. If you missed out on this game when it was released, come by the show tonight and see what it's all about, then if you're interested in picking it up, grab it for the low price of five dollars right now on GOG.com. | The LEGO Movie Videogame based on The LEGO Movie Posted: 09 Dec 2013 08:45 AM PST I'm so woefully out of touch with modern film news that I had no idea an animated feature was on the way which centered on the world of LEGO, but it very certainly is. And what would a family-oriented major motion picture release be without the announcement of a game based on said major motion picture? So it is that we have The LEGO Movie Videogame, coming in February to nearly every modern device capable of playing a videogame. It looks like more of what we've come to expect from the Traveler's Tales series of games centered on the globally loved construction blocks, with a less clearly defined content focus. Even the least enjoyable LEGO games in recent years have wound up being tolerable, which is about where my expectations lay for this one. |
| Square Enix has made Bloodmasque free again Posted: 09 Dec 2013 08:15 AM PST Now through midnight on December 16, Square Enix's vampire-themed action-RPG Bloodmasque is free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. I was strangely eager to share this news, but then I noticed the title was already free for a limited period of time last month. Maybe it shouldn't have launched at $6.99? Officially, the promotion is to celebrate 500K downloads. So, if you missed the last event, here's the obligatory download link. There's also some Holiday content happening this month that looks proper silly. Not that this game about scanning your face onto a character model is serious or anything -- Google image search this stuff for a laugh. |
| Posted: 09 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST Whilst looking at the newly-created page on GOG.com for Theme Park, I was shocked by the revelation of its original release date of 1994. Was Bullfrog's seminal management sim really that old? In fairness, looking at screenshots of Theme Park today it brings back memories that are, to be honest, a little mixed up with RollerCoaster Tycoon. Theme Park came out on almost every system imaginable at the time and its hook of managing your own theme park was totally intoxicating. Although the managerial gameplay was improved upon by the release of Theme Hospital three years later, I think I still want to play Theme Park again just to see if it holds up. |
| Halo: Spartan Assault hits Xbox One in late December Posted: 09 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST While the twin-stick shooter Halo: Spartan Assault has locked in a December 24, 2013 release date on Xbox One, the Xbox 360 version won't be arriving until January 2014. Folks who buy the original Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 version of the game before December 15 can shave ten dollars off the Xbox One release's normal $14.99 price tag. Even at such a reduced rate, I don't see too many people taking them up on the offer -- unless I'm missing something about Spartan Assault. Seems like an okay game, one that I didn't feel too bad about missing out on prior to these upcoming console ports. Is that a fair assessment? |
| Assassin's Creed IV multiplayer DLC sets sail tomorrow Posted: 09 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Ubisoft's adding a bit of clout to the Assassin's Creed IV multiplayer roster tomorrow. Blackbeard, arguably the most influential and notorious of pirates, will be made available for download as a playable multiplayer figure. The new DLC pack titled "Blackbeard's Wrath" also features The Orchid (a deadly assassin) and The Jaguar (an Aztec warrior). However, it's obvious that Blackbeard's the star of the show. As Ubisoft so quaintly puts it, he "uses his tremendous strength to throw his targets off balance and quickly finishes them with one clean strike." The cost of admission for interested seadogs is $2.99. Of course, there's no additional price for those that have already purchased the season pass. Blackbeard's Wrath drops on all platforms except Wii U, somewhat surprisingly. |
| Fez passes one million sales across all platforms Posted: 09 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST According to Polytron, Fez has sold over a million copies across all of its releases. For all of the controversies surrounding designer Phil Fish and the exposure gained through being extensively featured in Indie Game: The Movie, it only seemed like a matter of time before that milestone would get toppled. And there's still the unreleased PS3/PS4/PS Vita versions, too. In its announcement, Polytron thanked people for buying the game, spreading the word, and double dipping with the PC version. "Thank you for boycotting it so well!" reads the post. "Thank you for putting up with the bullshit! Thank you for all your love letters, fan art, cosplays and freakin' tattoos you got, you crazy bastards! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Say what you will about Fish, but I loved Fez and am glad so many people experienced it. Fez sells a million [Polytron] |
| Enjoy six minutes of Dying Light gameplay from VGX Posted: 09 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST Look, it may seem derisive to describe Dying Light as just "Dead Island + parkour" but dang if that ain't what it looks like. In this six-minute video you'll see some light traversal and some heavy-duty zombie bashing using either an axe and sledgehammer. I had never noticed these x-ray melee attacks before and they definitely underline the physicality of the melee system. The melee combat does seem really familiar but that's unsurprising as developer Techland was the studio behind Dead Island Riptide. The free running itself looks functional and a good way to get round the seemingly large playing area. I've yet to see a character go full on Mirror's Edge and just run and keep running but that might not be the type of game Techland is going for. We'll see Dying Light sometime in 2014 and I have the feeling I'll really need to get hands-on time with it to see how the traversal feels in practice. |
| Fake Fallout 4 site created to put pressure on Bethesda Posted: 09 Dec 2013 06:15 AM PST While I did get energized by that darned website thesurvivor2299.com -- the possibility of another Fallout will do that to you -- I wasn't nearly as invested in it as I could have been. A part of me knew deep down that something wasn't quite right, but I still had to look, like a child secretly watching their first R-rated movie from the stairs. At least the site's creator admitted to the hoax this weekend -- it could've gone on even longer, I'm sure. In a reddit Ask Me Anything, "the prick behind thesurvivor2299" talked about his thought process, which was: "I wanted to force Bethesda to reveal something during VGX on 12/11 (that was stupid), and bring [the] /r/Fallout community together ... Unfortunately, this plan failed." Asked what else was planned for the site, the creator said "I'm one of these 'selfish bastards with a lot of money' so I wanted to release a CGI trailer ... I'll do it after 21/11 on my website. Let things cool off a little. I don't want to piss off Bethesda at this time even more." Uhm, Hello? I'm the Prick behind thesurvivor2299. AMA? [reddit] |
| PS Plus members get Borderlands 2 this week Posted: 09 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST This week's PlayStation promotions have been revealed and there are some delightful presents Sony is giving out starting tomorrow. First off, PlayStation Plus subscribers will get Borderlands 2 added to the Instant Game Collection this week, so you'll be able to shoot and loot to your heart's content this holiday season. And that's just the tip. Sony continues its Holiday Sale with 50% off on a number of digitally distributed games, with additional savings for those precious PS Plus members. Some great titles are on offer, including the Tomb Raider Digital Edition bundle at a mere $14.99 ($13.49 for PS Plus members). Other notable titles on sale include Dragon's Crown, and Spelunky. |
| ID@Xbox policy means Xbox One is going to miss out Posted: 09 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST Microsoft's ID@Xbox program for Xbox One is in many ways a step up from the requirements attached to publishing independent games on Xbox 360. But it's got a clause that's going to be a problem, both for developers and for us gamers. Microsoft wants day-one parity with other console game platforms, though it says it'll work with devs who have already signed a timed exclusive with another platform on a case-by-case basis. This has led to Vlambeer setting up timed exclusivity with PlayStation 4 for its upcoming Nuclear Throne in order to have the ability to self-publish on Xbox One. A smart move on the studio's part, sure, but one that shouldn't be necessary. Another game, Assault Android Cactus, is unable to meet the ID@Xbox demands and won't release for the platform as a result. "We started development on our other console versions long before self-publishing was an option for Xbox One and the only way we could meet that requirement would be to delay the other versions of Cactus," developer Witch Beam's Sanatana Mishra told Eurogamer. "We also didn't have an exclusivity agreement in place with another console platform before the ID@Xbox program was announced, which could have allowed us to get a waiver." Even with the program's requirements made clear for all to see, this is still going to be a problem for smaller studios, particularly those who lack the sheer manpower to work on multiple versions of their game simultaneously. Making games isn't easy, and this ID@Xbox stuff isn't making it any easier. Perhaps Microsoft can be convinced to change the day-one parity clause. Otherwise, it's going to miss out on great titles. | BioWare GM: Mass Effect news might come in 2014 Posted: 09 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST As the gradual descent into the holiday season becomes more and more inevitable, game studios beginning to shut down their operations in favor of rest, relaxation, and end of the year festivities. After all, why reveal anything too ground-breaking when no one's paying attention anyway? Anyone hoping Mass Effect might break this mold is sorely mistaken. Aaryn Flynn, the GM of BioWare, has tweeted that he hopes the studio will be able to share more information about the next Mass Effect installment in 2014, adding "that's the most specific I can be." BioWare's been teasing this next title for quite a while, so hopefully the new year will at least bring about a proper reveal. Of course, it's not like BioWare's sitting around doing nothing. It's (presumably) hard at work on Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as a new IP and possibly a Star Wars game. Hopefully it makes time soon for its pals in the Mass Effect universe. @AarynFlynn [Twitter via Official Xbox Magazine] |
| Rockstar teases new single-player DLC for GTA V in 2014 Posted: 09 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST It looks like we haven't seen the last of GTA V's trio of main characters. During a blog post about upcoming content for GTA Online, Rockstar Games not only detailed information about new gameplay modes and the beta release of the content creator, but also a small tease of new content for the single-player game. "For those ready to jump back into the story of Grand Theft Auto V, we have big plans for substantial additions in 2014 continuing Michael, Franklin and Trevor's action, mayhem and unexpected adventures in Southern San Andreas." While I found GTA Online to be fun in small doses, the single-player was what really excited me about GTA V, and still does to this day. The words "substantial additions" really pique my interest, and "Southern San Andreas" seem to point to a Los Santos-focused expansion. While I'm not personally expecting anything on the level of RDR's Undead Nightmare, I am very happy to revisit the main characters. Especially, good ol' Trevor. I wonder what he's been up to since then? What would you like to see for a single-player update, and which character are you looking forward to playing as again? | Review: Razer Kraken Forged Edition headphones Posted: 09 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST Niiiiice. That's what you'd expect to say trying out a premium set of audiophile-quality headphones, especially when they're priced at $299.00. Razer's Kraken Forged Edition music and gaming headphones are certainly nice in both form and function. But are they $299 nice? Do they have a look and sound so good that you'd be okay eating ramen for the next month? |
| Tomb Raider's creative director now with Halo dev team Posted: 09 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST Timothy Longo, creative director behind the Tomb Raider reboot, has made the switch from Crystal Dynamics to 343 Industries. As shown on his LinkedIn profile, Longo is now the new creative director at 343; the studio is currently developing the next Halo game, which may or may not be Halo 5. With this move, the now-former creative director at 343, Josh Holmes, has been given the role of executive producer. What a pleasant surprise that must've been. | Torment fans vote for turn-based combat in Numenera Posted: 09 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST inXile asked Kickstarter backers what type of combat they would like to see in Torment: Tides of Numenera, and turn-based came out slightly in the lead. The votes were so close that inXile said it was basically a tie, but they have decided to implement the turn-based system despite half their backers voting for a real-time alternative. inXile believes that turn-based combat is "better suited for the kind of tactical complexity we're looking for." They are hoping to be able to please fans who voted for real-time combat by addressing their concerns with most real-time combat mechanics. |
| Pro League of Legends players can stream anything again Posted: 09 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST Earlier this week Riot decided to block any pro League of Legend player from streaming any competing MOBA. Riot has now decided to reverse this decision, and players can stream any game they wish. Riot says that it originally decided to block what pro players could stream based, because competing games were trying to use popular League of Legends players to promote their games by streaming them. Riot will be altering the complete ban to more accurately reflect the original intent, which is to control how players are used to market other games. Good for you Riot! I think this is the right call. It's what the fans want to see, and it's what the players want to do. | Genius Sonority is keen on localizing Denpa Men 3 Posted: 09 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Denpa Men 1 and its sequel came and went on the 3DS, and many folks out there (our own Jonathan Holmes included) enjoyed them. But it appears as if they're still fairly niche sales wise, and a localization of the third entry is still up in the air. Speaking to Nintendo Everything, Genius Sonority president Manabu Yamana said that he was interested in publishing the third game in North America and Europe -- but if there was ever to be a fourth game, it would have to mix things up this time around. Yamana goes on to say, "If there is to be another [fourth] continuation of The Denpa Men series, I would like to change the game style thoroughly as the first three titles were of the same format and style." It's rare that you get to see a developer create a trilogy of games in such a short amount of time, and it's great that they've reached this level of scaled success. If it's what they want, hopefully they can find a way to expand the appeal of the series. | New trailer shows off Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider Posted: 09 Dec 2013 03:45 AM PST During VGX Square Enix unveiled a trailer showing the pretty graphics from the upcoming Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It looks really pretty, but it looks almost exactly like the original trailers for the game. Running at 1080p is cool, but the PC version can already run at 4k. This version is really for anyone that somehow missed playing Tomb Raider, and those who want something that looks awesome to play on their new consoles. I think it's actually great that they are releasing this version, but the $60 price tag seems steep for a game that's almost a year old. |
| Posted: 09 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST This is your future, folks. A thing to go with the thing. Software sidecars. Thief gets a companion app for iOS and Android. The lite version will populate with news on the upcoming game, as well as trailers, screenshots, artwork, character bios and more. The full-priced version, set at $2.99, will let you link to the main game to track your stats. It will also give you access to a game wiki created in partnership with IGN, as well as digital maps created by Prima. Also, the first two issues of the official Thief comic will be included in digital form. GameStop has an exclusive pre-order exclusive that will give you this app for free as well as the full soundtrack by Luc St Pierre and a heist mission worth $4.99. Thief sneaks out February 25, 2014 in North America. |
| Meet Titanfall's Ogre, the tank in your sci-fi mech party Posted: 09 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST During this past weekend's VGX show, there were not only some rad reveals, but also some new trailers for games we already know about. The much-hyped shooter Titanfall got a new trailer, showing off the hardened tank of a Titan called the "Ogre." It is described to sacrifice agility for pure stopping power and the ability to absorb a lot of damage before being destroyed. Personally, I like the very clinical propagandized approach of the trailer. It's not a machine built for murder; it's an efficient instrument responsible for "67% of enemy force depletion." I can just imagine the suits with their pie charts discussing its capabilities. |
| Square Enix opens up official Bravely Second site Posted: 09 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST The sequel to Bravely Default is a thing, and it's called Bravely Second -- which is a silly name, but an upgrade on the original, I guess. Square Enix has gone and opened up an official site, complete with a miniature 10 second looping musical track, and some beautiful artwork. As an aside, the game is confirmed to take place in the same world several years later with a new character. It's also going to be on the 3DS again, which is great news for a portable that just keeps on rolling. Bravely Second [Square Enix] |
| These two Japan-only Mario 3DS XL systems look great Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:45 AM PST Flet's is a Japanese internet provider with a terrible company name -- Japan loves to put an apostrophe in everything. Flet's has junk signage all over the country and they try to get you to sign up for service in the weirdest ways. Last year they gave me Flet's branded cheese curls to do so. Nintendo has partnered with Flet's for a very limited release of two Mario 3DS XL game systems. They both look great, but I really like the red-on-white Mario face one. But, outside of some luck on Yahoo Auctions or something, you'll never see these. It sounds like they're very limited, and that you have to apply for service to even be able to buy one. I'm not mad. I guess I should be happy with my Zelda 3DS. But I love that Luigi one so much that I can't stop thinking about it. And now this Mario one. |
| Awesomenauts' PS4 release chance this year 'slim to none' Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST Ronimo Games has confirmed to Destructoid that the chances of the PlayStation 4 release of Awesomenauts are "slim to none" in 2013. According to the developer, the studio handling the PS4 port, Abstraction Games, has submitted the game to Sony "several times," and is still waiting for approval. This situation is happening right alongside of the PC launch of the Starstorm expansion, which is going quite well, and is actually ahead of schedule. Hopefully whatever issues Sony has with the game can be smoothed over sooner than later. |
| Ubisoft thinks The Division's Snowdrop Engine is amazing Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:15 AM PST Ubisoft released a video showing off the Snowdrop Engine from The Division, and it seems like they thinks it's really cool. In fact, they say that "never before has a video game reached this level of detail." I think that's a bunch of hyperbole, and that Ubisoft just wants you to know how cool and next-gen it is. The Snowdrop engine will have a dynamic day and night cycle, volumetric lighting, dynamic global illumination, procedural destruction, an advanced particle system, and dynamic material shaders for weather effects. These are all things that have been done before, so it's not really groundbreaking technology, but the game does look really pretty. Of course, this demo was probably created on a crazy high-end PC, and the actual game will look no where near as good. |
| Awesomenauts: Starstorm is almost ready to launch Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST After a mega-successful campaign, Awesomenauts' Starstorm expansion is nearly upon us, and the initial bit of content could hit as early as this week. If all goes according to plan, Ted McPain, the first add-on character, will drop this Thursday. If you've been playing the beta you've already seen him in action. Keys for Starstorm will be sent out this week, so check your email before Thursday if you want to get in on the action at launch. Everyone will also be getting surveys soon (the good kind), asking you for your t-shirt size, and all of the other info for backer rewards. I'm pretty stoked for the new content, and I hope it breaths new life into the game. |
| New Thief trailer shows the death of Garrett's apprentice Posted: 09 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST Anyone who played the old Thief games might remember Garrett taking on a young apprentice. Apparently, Eidos Montreal doesn't want to have a young thief following him around, because during VGX they released a trailer for the new Thief, which shows her death. In the trailer Garrett is sad about her dying, and it looks like he will be motivated in the new game by revenge. The trailer also has a bunch of creepy robed dudes who are trying to channel some primal nonsense in an evil ceremony, which will most likely lead to the destruction of the city. The story looks really bad to me, and I can't think of a trailer that could get me less excited about a game. Thief trailer reveals what became of Garrett's apprentice (she died) [PCGamesN] |
| Mega Man's anniversary to end with...eyeglasses? Posted: 09 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST Alongside of that Mega Man themed DLC for Sound Rangers: Rhythm & Battle, it appears as if Capcom has another celebration planned for the end of the 25th Anniversary -- eyewear. Yep, the publisher is releasing special glasses for Mega Man, Phoenix Wright, Ghosts'n Goblins, and Resident Evil. Mega Man appears to be lumped in this time, as the occasion happens to be the 30th Anniversary of Capcom itself. The blue bomber can't catch a break it seems, since literally every other company/fan has done a better job of honoring him. Special [Zoff via Siliconera] |
| Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes launching March 18th Posted: 09 Dec 2013 12:18 AM PST "Spring 2014" no more -- Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be launching on March 18th, 2014 on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. As a surprise announcement Konami has revealed the Xbox exclusive "Jamais Vu" mission, featuring robot freaking Raiden in what appears to be his incarnation from Metal Gear Rising. As a recap, the PS3 and PS4 versions will be getting a "Deja Vu" mission involving Classic Snake. So basically, you'll have the opportunity to pick your favorite protagonist coming this March. I choose both. |
| Posted: 09 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST The original Peggle came out of nowhere. It took a simple concept of peg-based brick-breaking that had been a staple of gaming basically since the beginning, and added a unique cartoon sheen that gave it a ton of character. While many gamers were quick to claim that it was mostly luck based, hundreds of precision skill-shot videos proved them dead wrong, as Peggle is most definitely a deep game. Therein lies its core charm. Anyone can pick it up and have fun, but if you take the time, you can guide balls through pegs better than Neo in The Matrix. Peggle 2 doesn't change a whole lot from that same basic winning formula, and that's fine with me. |
| Mobile company pays $18M to rename Cal football field Posted: 08 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST California Memorial Stadium, Cal Berkeley's football colosseum, will get a name change, at least for the next decade and a half. A 15 year long, $18M deal between the school and mobile game publisher Kabam will see the stadium renamed, "Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium." According to Cal, this mouthful of a name marks the largest field-naming rights deal in US college sports history. College football is such a racket. It is the unpaid internships of sports. Incidentally, that $18 million over 15 years is nothing compared to the $445 million debt the school is carrying (and struggling to pay) for the recent, huge stadium renovation. In fact, the school is paying $18 million yearly just on the interest. Meanwhile, Kabam is expected to surpass $300 million in revenue in 2013. Re-branding such an iconic stadium feels a bit dirty in and of itself, like when people thought we'd call Candlestick anything other than Candlestick, but it's so bizarre to me to see a mobile game publisher nailing down high publicity naming rights. | GOG.com to introduce 30-day full refunds for broken games Posted: 08 Dec 2013 09:00 PM PST In another welcome move, GOG.com will start giving 100% refunds on its games, if gamers are unable to run them. This moves follows EA's similar move to give refunds on first-party games on Origin earlier in the year. If support teams are unable to get a purchased game functioning properly, then customers are eligible for the refund within 30 days or purchase. It's a good move and whilst some may say GOG.com don't go far enough, its no-DRM policy could result in many users buying games, playing them quickly, and then demanding a refund. Indeed, the company calls this move "an act of trust" as they cannot stop players from playing a title after potentially receiving a refund. As someone who has a laptop filled with games bought from GOG.com, I haven't had any issues with any titles I've bought. PC gaming being the fickle beast that it is means that's not going to be the case for everyone and this step to provide refunds is very welcome. Of course it's all going to come down to how well their customer support responds to queries but I'd hope they're already set up for this. |
| Teen gets took for £450: Bought a photo of an Xbox One Posted: 08 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST Remember when everyone was afraid to buy online because they didn't want to get took? Well, scammers are happy that buying online has generally worked out, allowing people to let their guard down while they grift. A 19-year old Nottingham resident fell for the whole "sell a picture of an expensive thing" con, the Nottingham Post reports. Instead of a new Xbox One for his four-year old, he got a picture that looked like it came out of a printer with low ink levels. Fortunately for him, he received a full refund, while the seller has been banned from eBay. I guess, in the end, he Xbox won. | Rockstar selling cute Grand Theft Auto doggie plushes Posted: 08 Dec 2013 07:00 PM PST Well, not that cute. Sort of misshapen. And $30? Maybe if that "bullet whistle" was a bullet vibe. In case you don't think Rockstar has made enough money off of Grand Theft Auto V, you can buy a bunch of expensive, GTAV branded junk at the Rockstar's online store. How about a dog leash for $20 or $25? It's "perfect for medium sized and large dogs." Humans, too, I bet. You can finally live out all your Grand Theft Auto-branded fetishes. |
