Dino Run 2 launches free game in last push for funding Posted: 03 Dec 2013 03:30 PM PST Dino Run 2 seemed like a sure thing when it first hit Kickstarter. It's the sequel to a well loved and well played title. It's got top notch animation, music, and art direction. It's coming from established developers with a proven track record. It even has cameos from some of gaming's most beloved characters. Yet here we are, just a couple of days until the game's campaign is over with around 65% of funding left to go. If you were at all interested in the game, better check out all the new features, the Enter Planet D spin off game, and the developers streaming hot Dino Run action before it's too late. Sorry folks. You'll get no "extinction" or "hold on to your butts" jokes from me. I'm too sad.

Take a closer look at Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth Posted: 03 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth is all kinds of adorable. Astride the cast of familiar names are a pair of new faces, amnesiacs (because of course they have amnesia) named Zen and Rei, the latter of which frequently conjures corndogs and donuts from thin air. If that seems at all outlandish, just remember that this is a world where school children can summon demons with pistols. Ensorcelled morsels are pretty much just the par for an already bizarre course. And really, growing teens gotta eat. Dungeon crawling really builds up an appetite. Beyond the tasty treats, the story takes place in an alternate realm resembling Yasogami High, the school from Persona 4, where the Investigation Team encounters the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad of Persona 3. Brought together by a mysterious clock tower, the groups join forces with a memory-devoid duo to escape the labyrinthine school. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth is slated to release on June 5, 2014 in Japan for Nintendo 3DS. In the meantime, take a peek at the game's first round of screenshots. Dragon's Crown shipments soar past 800,000 copies Posted: 03 Dec 2013 02:30 PM PST Atlus has announced Dragon's Crown shipments and digital sales have climbed north of the 800,000 mark since Vanallaware's PlayStation 3 and Vita brawler ventured out into the wild this summer. The controversial title also cleaned up at the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia's PlayStation Awards, winning both a "Gold Prize" and a "User's Choice Award." In celebration of the breakthrough success, Atlus will be offering the game at a discount for a limited time in Japan this month, dropping the asking price from 6,980 yen to 4,980 yen. Considering Dragon's Crown really hasn't been on the market all that long, it seems very much within the realm of possibility that this niche project could go on to become a million seller. 全世界での出荷本数80万本突破&PlayStation Awards 2013 「Gold Prize」&「ユーザーズチョイス賞」受賞!ディスカウントキャンペーンのお知らせ [Atlus]

Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod hits Steam on December 16 Posted: 03 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST There's technically been nothing stopping me from trying the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod, but I've managed to continually miss out on the public beta tests. It was wonderful to hear that it'll also be released for Steam -- on Monday, December 16, as we now know -- if for no other reason than to raise visibility and get more people playing the game. No more excuses for me, either. One final beta test will occur on Saturday, December 7 and carry through December 14. Should be a riot. I also feel like Just Cause 2's developer Avalanche should be commended for letting the mod be integrated with the Steam release. Good on them.

The Old Republic 'Galactic Starfighter' expansion is live Posted: 03 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST As promised, the Galactic Starfighter expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic has gone live for subscribers today adding 12 vs. 12 PvP free-flight dogfighting, complete with the ability to customize ships. On top of getting early access to Galactic Starfighter, subscribers will also be receiving several exclusive in-game bonuses such as paint jobs and titles. Preferred Status Players, anyone who's previously been a subscriber or has made an in-game purchase, will be able to access the expansion beginning on January 14, with free-to-play access being granted a month later in February. Am I the only one who feels as though that, while Galactic Starfighter seems like a jolly good time, this is all a little too late for the MMO?

Here's some videos showing off the new Peggle 2 Masters Posted: 03 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST One of the sure fire ways to my shriveled, deep-fried, black heart is to mention The Big Lebowski. Now you throw Peggle in the mix and I'm all ears; PopCap has just put some trailers online showing off the powers of some of the all-new Peggle masters. Now don't get me wrong, the skills that new masters like Luna and Gnorman have are pretty impressive but Jeffery's bowling ball skill looks like it's a great way to rack up a lot of points, especially with a beverage in one's hand. Peggle 2 is going to be launching on Xbox One on December 9 but it's sure to pop up on other platforms sooner, rather than later.

Stick it to the Man is out now for PS Vita Posted: 03 Dec 2013 12:30 PM PST The ever-hilarious and awesome game Stick it to the Man is available right frikkin' now in the PSN store for PS Vita. If you read my review, you know that I absolutely loved the charm, style, and humor of this game and I highly recommend you download it. In fact, if you got it on PS3, you're able to get it for free for Vita, as the title features Cross-Buy. I've had a few minutes to play around with the Vita version since it's been released, and I love it even more on the handheld. The ability to use the touchscreen to tap and pull stickers, read minds, and maneuver around the papercraft-like world is perfect, making this the ideal version of the game. Yes, I'm playing through it again.

Eufloria HD spreads to PS Vita on December 17 Posted: 03 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Eufloria has been around for ages, but the stylish real-time strategy game is only now coming to PlayStation Vita with a revised HD edition by Titanium Studios. Eufloria HD has been locked in for a Tuesday, December 17 launch on the platform. This version sports 60 frames per second "in almost all circumstances" and "super responsive" touch-screen controls, according to Omni Systems Limited creative director Rudolf Kremers. More than that, though, I think the flow of this game will be a particularly good fit for the system. Eufloria is one of those titles about building up a colony and then swarming planets, and despite all of the death happening, it's frequently a relaxing experience. Space colony sim Maia is now on Steam's Early Access Posted: 03 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST Typical, you wait an age for a management sim set in space, then two come along at the same time. I literally only bought Double Fine's Spacebase DF-9 about 24 hours ago and now up pops Maia. Just like Double Fine's effort, Maia puts you in charge of a colony in outer space, only this time you're actually on an alien world, not just floating in space. The game looks to have a slight retro-futuristic vibe happening, influences like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Silent Running, and that's referenced on the Steam store page. There's also a influences from the likes of Dungeon Keeper and Theme Hospital so that's right up my alley too. Developer Simon Roth is hoping to put out weekly updates which is a great way of showing support for your game. He's already advertising "genetically engineered super chickens" are in the game with "sassy computers" and "cats in bee suits to follow." Sounds great to me.

Persona 4 Golden surpasses 700K units shipped worldwide Posted: 03 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Persona 4 Golden has exceeded 700,000 shipments worldwide, Atlus has announced. That total encapsulates digital sales in addition to physical orders placed by brick and mortar outlets. Atlus is celebrating the milestone with a discount on the digital version via the PlayStation Store in Japan. The portable role-playing game will be marked down from 5,980 yen to 4,980 yen between December 11 and January 8. The Asia (English language) version of Persona 4 Golden was honored with a "User's Choice Award" at the PlayStation Awards in Tokyo today. Last year, the domestic release took home the same prize, marking impressive back-to-back wins for Atlus and the acclaimed title. P4G 全世界で累計出荷本数70万本突破!&ユーザーズチョイス賞2年連続 受賞![Atlus]

This new Humble Bundle is Jumbo indeed Posted: 03 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST In a bit of smart timing, the new Humble Bundle has launched mere hours after the Steam Autumn sale has ended. This Jumbo bundle is offering six games in total, three for pay-whatever-you-want and the other games will cost you at least $3.85 (at time of writing). Included in the name-your-price selection is the sci-fi tactical shooter Natural Selection 2, the chaotic wizardry of Magicka, and the futuristic tower defense of Sanctum 2. If you pay more than the average price, you'll also unlock the co-op fun of Orcs Must Die! 2, the balls-to-the-wall FPS Serious Sam 3: BFE, and the oddball fun of Garry's Mod. Also included are the soundtracks to all the games (except Garry's Mod) depending on your payment level. Lastly, there's the tantalizing tease of more goodies to come in the two weeks until the Jumbo Bundle is gone.

Isometric sci-fi horror game Stasis funded on Kickstarter Posted: 03 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST With three days remaining in its crowdfunding campaign, Stasis has raised the necessary $100,000 to move forward on Kickstarter. I had completely missed this Windows / Mac project until today, which I feel bad about, now that I'm digging into the pitch. This is a 2D isometric sci-fi horror adventure set aboard a "seemingly" derelict spacecraft. Throw in a multinational corporation, a protagonist with a missing wife and daughter, and Event Horizon listed as an influence -- you've got my attention. There's even a playable alpha build which you can download over here regardless of whether or not you've contributed to the Kickstarter. Point-and-click adventuring and horror are a winning combination, as far as I'm concerned. If you like what you see of Stasis and want to help, give it an upvote on Steam Greenlight.

Live show: Getting lost in Miasmata Posted: 03 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] If you just so happened to read my show post yesterday, you may have heard that I'm bringing theme days back to Mash Tactics. Each day will have its own unique theme, and every Tuesday, the plan is to bring you the best in indie gaming. These shows will be of course be full of great indie games and will more than likely be filled with developer guests, giveaways, and more in an attempt to promote some of these brilliant, yet often overlooked titles. This evening, we'll be jumping into the mysterious world of Miasmata. I really know nothing about this game other than that you are a scientist that has contracted some sort of plague, and has traveled to a far-off island in search of a cure armed only with his survival skills to keep him alive. I'm a bit late to the party on this title, but am no less excited to finally check the game out. I'm a huge fan of exploration, survival, and mysterious locals, so I can only imagine that I'm going highly enjoy this adventure wherever it may lead me. QotD: What clever theme name can you think of for these 'indie showcase' Tuesdays? Read more... |
Impressions: Disney Infinity: Rapunzel, Ralph & Vanellope Posted: 03 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST The first thing that came to mind when Disney Infinity was announced was a Wreck-It Ralph-themed campaign. With multiple settings that weren't fully explored in the film, the franchise is a goldmine of locations, and I would have loved to have seen them in some form. But that dream was not meant to be, as Avalanche Studios currently has no Play Set planned for Ralph and his best friend Vanellope. Even if that day never comes however, the characters are still pretty enjoyable in their own right. Read more... |
RuneScape players raise $90K for charity Posted: 03 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST Earlier this year, Jagex introduced the Well of Goodwill, an outlet for RuneScape players to donate their in-game currency. In turn, the developer will make charitable contributions per every 10 million gold pieces put into the well by the player base. It seemed like a neat concept, but now we know to what extent RuneScape players have embraced the system. According to Jagex, $90,838 has been donated. The money will be spread across seven charities: Willow Foundation, SpecialEffect, Action For Kids, Games Aid, Internet Watch Foundation, HART and the DEC Philippines Typhoon Appeal. "The Well of Goodwill will remain in game, but you won't be able to donate items there for the time being as we're currently in the process of planning to support even more worthy causes in the near future," wrote the company. "As soon as we’ve got everything sorted, the well will be reopened." Well of Goodwill – A Big Thank You for your Generosity! [RuneScape]

Who was the WORST new videogame character of 2013? Posted: 03 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST [All week long we'll be asking for your thoughts on certain topics related to the year in gaming!] 2013 added some amazing new characters to our medium, but it also brought with it some serious stinkers. Annoying (and unwanted) co-op sidekicks, painful reimaginings of fan favorites from generations past, MERLENDERL -- the list goes on. The object of my personal disaffection had to be Carver from Dead Space 3. The simple addition of an optional co-op character to one of my favorite horror series didn't turn out to be the harbinger I had worried it would be, but the design of said character couldn't have been much worse if they actively tried. Loud, brash, and full of the same grating military-FPS bravado I play games like Dead Space to avoid, I cringed every time Carver popped up on screen and the game didn't let me put a Plasma Cutter shot through his one good eye. What about you? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments below! Or, if you find yourself getting long-winded, write a blog! (Be sure to share the link below.) We'll be pulling in quotes from the community for a special recap post later this week, so take some time to think about your responses. Have fun!

The Core no more, Come check out the Video Game Clubhouse Posted: 03 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST You guys may remember a little show Spencer and I did having something to do with cores over on our twitch channel. You don't? Good because that show isn't around anymore. It has changed, evolved and mutated into something better, something we all can be proud of. In a move that will probably not surprise anyone we have decided to make the show more focused on games and industry guests. Not only will we be playing games live and interacting with you, but we will occasionally have industry guests on the show and play their games with them! Pretty Crazy, eh? So our first show will just be to show off the new format, we are going to play Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag to test out the new set and concept. Just don't call it "Diet Gentlemen's Club" or "Gentlemen's Club Lite." It's different, we promise. Read more... |

First PlayStation Vita TV ad tugs at familial strings Posted: 03 Dec 2013 07:15 AM PST PS Vita TV TV commercial. Hah. This ad isn't ground breaking, but it's really cute. I've always liked these sorts of technological retrospectives. Add in a cute family, swinging tunes, and a truckload of chihuahuas and I'm bound to crack a smile. Also, is that a throwback Rams jersey? Now we just need the PS Vita TV to be announced for the US. Such a neat little thing.

Inside the Square Pt 2 talks Lightning Returns design Posted: 03 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST "I've only seen him in person very few times," a Lightning Returns staffer whispers of character design lead Tetsuya Nomura, casting furtive, sidelong glances. I hear he is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but hearing these Square employees tell it, anybody could have worked for Nomura. This second behind the scenes look at Lightning Returns talk about Nomura's designs and dovetails into the world and score. A monorail will ferry you between the game's four island settings, seemingly at will. We've seen a lot of the Mardi Gras excess style island in previous trailers, but some of the other locales shown off look rather neat, like the quaint, quiet town where everyone is calmly waiting to die. Also, Chocolina sighting! Yes! Oh, and the outdoorsy Wildlands looks to have ramps. Maybe you can pull off some sick chocobo jumps?

Sony seeking at least one new director Posted: 03 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST Sony is looking to add a member -- at least one -- to its board of directors and is looking at various US-based media executives, the New York Post reports. Vocal investor Dan Loeb, who earlier this year pushed to parcel off a large chunk of Sony's entertainment division, is seeking a seat, though we don't know if Sony is open to the idea. Mostly, I wanted to use that header image. Sony seeks ‘at least one new director’ [New York Post]

Try the Project Spark beta ... if you have Windows 8.1 Posted: 03 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST While Project Spark is also coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox One, for now, the game about creating games has a beta -- and it's only available for Windows 8.1 users. There's a sign-up page over here, in case you missed seeing it earlier this year. Beta keys should be going out now, so keep an eye on that inbox of yours. I'm unsure if there's a non-disclosure agreement for participants, but I'm hoping they'll be allowed to share their creations on YouTube. Wouldn't mind seeing what the average player is capable of making. Read more... |
Bethesda is seeking playtesters for unannounced game Posted: 03 Dec 2013 06:15 AM PST There's been a lot of chatter lately about what the developers at Bethesda Softworks have got in the works. With the recent survivor2299 website popping up, and the trademarks for Fallout 4 being registered, many people are convinced that the publisher has got the next installment of the popular open-world action/RPG ready in the wings. And now, Bethesda has put out a call for playtesters for its next 'unannounced' title. On the publisher's site, they set up an application page seeking anyone over the age of 18 and in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to sign up for playtests. While it's easy to look at Fallout as the likely candidate, remember that Bethesda owns id Software, the creators of Doom and Rage, which is also stationed in Dallas. It is possible that they've got their next title ready for extensive testing. In any case, if you're interested in working as a playtester for this unannounced title, and you're in the area, then feel free to sign up. And remember, be sure to tell them to tighten up the graphics on level three. Play Test Application [Bethesda]

Spelunky PS Vita discounted for European gamers Posted: 03 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST After the recent update for Spelunky on PlayStation Vita which added the terrific Daily Challenge mode and addressed a few issues like slowdown, I can wholeheartedly recommend double dipping with that version. Sony is currently doing a "12 deals of Christmas" promo in Europe and today, the game is marked down alongside Diablo III for PlayStation 3. Spelunky for PS Vita (and PS3; Cross-Buy and Cross-Play are supported) is down to €6.99/£5.49 from its original price of €14.99/£11.99, and PlayStation Plus members can take an extra 10 percent off as well. As for Diablo III, it's cheaper, but still not particularly cheap -- the game is €39.99/£29.99, down from €59.99/£49.99. The 12 deals of Christmas -- deal #2 [EU PlayStation.Blog]

New look at The Division set for later this week at VGX Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST With the Spike VGX awards set for this Saturday, there will be number titles ready to show off new footage and even be revealed for the first time. The already confirmed titles ready to premiere new trailers are The Witcher 3, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Titanfall, Thief, and Quantum Break. And now, we can add The Division to that list as Ubisoft is set to reveal a new trailer during the broadcast. On his Twitter page, Geoff Keighley has been letting out bits of info about the upcoming show. The Division made quite an impression at this past E3, and it looks like the publisher is ready to build up more hype going into 2014. As you can tell by the title, the award show formerly known as the VGAs will be a bit different this year. It's been scaled back, and much of the excess of the previous years will be toned down. The organizers claim that they listened to viewer feedback and tried something different, so it'll be much more tolerable this year. Hopefully, anyway. If you're unable to watch the show on Spike TV or during the online webcast, then be sure to check back with Destructoid over the weekend. We'll be posting news and media as it comes for these upcoming titles, and Max is hosting a live commentary show.

WildStar reveals its final two classes: Medic & Engineer Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:30 AM PST The remaining classes for the upcoming MMO WildStar have been revealed -- the Medic and the Engineer. The former is described as an "ultra-high-tech close range hybrid healer" with the ability to do damage, and the latter's specs and playstyle hasn't been fully explained yet (although I'm guessing they'll play some sort of support role). More information on both classes is coming soon (December 11th), including a video on the new classes later today. The biggest phase of the WildStar beta is also scheduled to begin later this month, so check your email in the coming weeks for an invite.

PSA: Fire Emblem: Awakening is $15 at Best Buy Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST One of the best games of this year, Fire Emblem: Awakening, is currently $15 at Best Buy. For comparison, Amazon, Gamestop, and WalMart are all selling it for $40 still. The catch is that, while you can order it online, you will have to do in-store pick up. It's not available anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, but, fortunately, I already own it. For those of you that don't, hopefully you can get lucky. It's delightful, gorgeous, and ball busting on higher difficulties. I just had Maribelle accidentally killed off. Now she'll never bang Lissa. Very sad.

Assassin's Creed IV is half off today on Amazon Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag are featured in Amazon's Gold Box Deal of the Day and, while supplies last, are marked down to $29.99 -- that's 50 percent off. Mmm. Mighty tempting, that is. A pirate's life for me? Possibly! Amazon also has Rocksmith 2014 Edition for PS3 and Xbox 360 discounted to $32.99 today. It's worth noting that this package does not include the required Real Tone cable, but it's still a 45 percent discount.

Battlefield 4's China Rising DLC is out today Posted: 03 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST Despite the fact that PC, 360, PS3, Xbox One, and PS4 users are all still having major issues with Battlefield 4, there's new DLC coming out today for Battlefield Premium members (everyone else will have to wait two weeks). The add-on is in the form of the China Rising pack, which features four news maps (Silk Road, Altai Range, Guilin Peaks, and Dragon Pass), as well as new "Levolutions" for each, an Air Superiority mode, dirt bikes, new weapons, new gadgets, and additional challenges. It's free with the code included in your new copy, otherwise you'll have to shell out for Premium or pay $14.99 when it officially drops on December 17th. I'm enjoying Battlefield 4 on the Xbox One, and these maps sure look great, but seriously EA/DICE -- fix your damn game.

Impressions: Rainbow Moon (Vita) Posted: 03 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Strategy RPGs seem to thrive on handheld systems. While many are released on console, it often takes a port to a portable build for gamers to take notice. With a sequel already in the works, EastAsiaSoft has seen fit to port last year's Rainbow Moon from PS3 to Vita, and the experience remains mostly intact from the console version. This is both to its credit and its detriment. Read more... |
Fallout 4 countdown has a weird coded message on it now Posted: 03 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST I love crazy codes and weird puzzles like this. Thesurvivor2299.com popped up a couple of weeks ago, and it is commonly thought to be a teaser for the upcoming announcement of Fallout 4. The site has an ever-changing morse code pattern in the background, and now there is coded text on the page followed by the words "Nuclear winter has come." The codes and messages are filled with references to Vault 119, some sort of security breach, a vault overseer, and the city of Boston. The Fallout subreddit is the best place to see people attempts at cracking the secrets of this weird website, and if you want to see all of the known information in one place, check out this Google doc.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn hits PS4 in April Posted: 03 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is making the leap to PlayStation in April 2014, Square Enix announced today at the annual PlayStation Awards in Tokyo, Japan. The MMO was the recipient of the newly-created "Special Award," which recognizes games exhibiting originality, buzz-worthiness, influence and performance. Beta testing for the PS4 release will begin worldwide on February 2, 2014, which coincides with the console's Japanese launch. Prior to then, producer Naoki Yoshida will host a live demonstration for the title on December 14, 2013. The broadcast will feature content from the upcoming 2.1 patch, which is slated to drop a few days later on December 17.

Update for Nvidia Shield unlocks 1080p streaming Posted: 03 Dec 2013 02:30 AM PST The Nvidia Shield, the little controller with a screen attached to it, just rolled out an update that lets it stream games in 1080p. Before this update, it could only stream games in 720p. This update also touch controls from Android games to be mapped to physical buttons, which is really awesome. If you are a Shield user in northern California, you will be able to try out Nvidia's new GRID service. GRID will let you stream games to your Shield from the cloud, instead of streaming from your own gaming PC. The Shield is $50 off right now for the Holidays, which means it's only $249. Not an awful price for a device that is becoming more and more useful. Nvidia Shield Now Supports 1080p GameStream [IGN]

Borderlands 2 Christmas customizations shown in video Posted: 03 Dec 2013 02:15 AM PST Borderlands 2 has seen tons of downloadable content over the past year, but it is finally coming to the end (at least, until they announce some more). After two characters, four big narrative campaigns, two level increases, a bunch of customization options, and a couple optional areas, the last set of DLC is made up of the three "Headhunter" packs, each taking on a different holiday theme. In October there was the Halloween-themed T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest, in November there was the Thanksgiving-flavored The Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler, and later this month we can expect How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day, which is presumably all about Christmas (and perhaps Chanukah?). While we don't know much beyond the theme of this upcoming DLC, the video above shows off the customization options available in it. Given the nature of the Headhunter packs (kill a boss, wear his head), it seems likely that the Vault Hunters will be fighting some sort of deranged snowman this time around. Otherwise, the skins are generally pretty well done, with my personal favorites being the Commando's nutcracker-esque "Tin Soldier" and the Psycho's "WARM AND TOASTY" pastel sweater. Ground Zeroes save files will interact with Phantom Pain Posted: 03 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST Speaking with Famitsu magazine, Hideo Kojima talked a bit about the decision to split the upcoming Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain into two games, and how he would have rather "released it all at once." Kojima hints that Phantom Pain will most likely come out when the PlayStation 4 "becomes more spread out," which implies a larger install base, and thus a larger wait. He also touched on the fact that during GDC 2013 Konami showed off a Fox Engine demo, leading people to believe that Metal Gear Solid V was already complete -- but that's far from the reality. Since the game will require "much more time," the decision to split Ground Zeroes into its own game was made to to "allow fans to at least play the prologue, ahead of time." Originally Kojima wanted to offer it up as a download-only to keep things cheap, but since "some places don't have the best connectivity," a physical version will be shipped as well. Finally, Kojima hints that save data from Ground Zeroes will unlock something in Phantom Pain eventually, but there's no hints as to what that may be. So there you have it -- Ground Zeroes became a prequel episode essentially to help soothe the long wait for Phantom Pain. Rumor: 'Threshold' update will unify Xbox One and Windows Posted: 03 Dec 2013 12:30 AM PST ZDNet claims that Microsoft is working on an update to unify the Xbox One, Windows 8, and Windows Phone. This update, code-named Threshold, could be coming out in Spring 2015, and it will offer a common app store for all three devices. This information is completely based information from unnamed sources on ZDNet, and Microsoft has declined to comment to them on "rumors and speculation'. It seems like a solid rumor to me, and sounds a lot like the ecosystem that Apple has in place. Of course, I don't have faith in Microsoft to implement this in a way that won't be obtuse, awkward, and cumbersome. Microsoft codename 'Threshold': The next major Windows wave takes shape [ZDNet]

Look at this amazing Atari themed PlayStation 4 Posted: 03 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST John Carmack tweeted out a picture of an Atari 2600 sitting on top of a Playstation 4, and this inspired Phantom Fighter to create some photoshop magic. Phantom Fighter posted his awesome concept to his blog, The Food Sucks. This looks fantastic, and I want to have one. Would you use a wood-paneled gaming console?

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST Couch co-op is sadly rare these days. Although I grew up playing games locally throughout my entire childhood, more often than not, split- or same-screen play is axed in favor of packing in more online features. Whether it's by way of "conserving resources" or pure laziness, it's becoming increasingly difficult to entertain a room full of people with videogames. Thankfully, Spearhead Games' Tiny Brains opts for the best of both worlds, with both local and online play capabilities. Oh, and it's also a ton of fun -- with or without friends. Read more... |
Nvidia: PC 'superior,' 'viable alternative' to consoles Posted: 02 Dec 2013 09:00 PM PST Nvidia consumer sales manager Matt Wright says the company is "proposing small form-factor PCs to be a viable alternative to the next-gen consoles." "Enthusiast players want the ultimate games system and that is the PC," he told MCV. The PC platform is far superior to any console when it comes to gaming," Wright explained. "[P]lus you get all the extra functionality that a computer brings." In other news, Ford thinks cars are much better than buses and bikes. Still, Wright isn't wrong. The growing ubiquity of Steam (a rise of one million concurrent users in the last year), combined with Dr. Robotnik's Mean Steam Machines that are priced a bit more reasonably (equivalent to an Xbox One), could start making inroads for living room PCs. Still, that's the same way that an Xbox One is an alternative to a PS4. As long as exclusive games exist, along with fans of those games, console toppling doesn't seem in the (graphics) cards, Nvidia. Nvidia: 'PC far superior to next-gen consoles' [MCV]

PS4 sales cross 2.1M after European/Latin American launch Posted: 02 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST We knew the PS4 sold over a million units in 24 hours of North American availability. We knew it outsold the Wii U in the UK (over 250k units) in 48 hours. The numbers add up. Cue the PlayStation Blog update putting those numbers into a neat, tidy sum. "Now, with PS4’s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold.." We're still waiting on the PS4's release in many Asian countries as well. Notably, Japan, where the PS4 launches in February. It will be interesting to see how the console does there, given Sony's strong launch history juxtaposed with a climate that seems harsh to everything that isn't the 3DS. Do you think Sony can hit its 5M sales expectations by March 2014?

DICE CEO ponders using cloud power to create clouds Posted: 02 Dec 2013 07:00 PM PST In a recent Guardian interview, EA DICE head Patrick Söderlund talked about some of the new avenues cloud computing is opening for developers and posed the question, "what if we had servers where it pulls in just things as simple as weather and day time from the local area?" "If the server is in Stockholm and it's sunny, what if the map is sunny, too? What if it's snowing and dark in Moscow? Okay, let's have the servers there playing snowy and dark maps. You look at the possibilities and realise you can do so many more things in the cloud-enabled world than we couldn't do before. That's frankly one dumb idea from me, but it's kind of cool!" I don't know whether this weather will ever be implemented, but I think it's kind of cool, too. The idea of dynamic weather on its own, though -- even if it's not pulled from real world data -- might be something multiplayer games should start considering. Different times of day and weather effects could help keep the same old maps feeling fresh. Söderlund also talks about the legacy of Mirror's Edge's uniqueness and its standout main character, though he offers only vague details on Mirror's Edge 2. Don't mess this one up, guys. I gotta have Faith. Battlefield, Mirrors Edge, Star Wars: Patrick Söderlund on EA Dice [The Guardian]

Persona 4: Dancing All Night screens look just amazing Posted: 02 Dec 2013 04:30 PM PST Persona 4: Dancing All Night is a real thing that's happening. Even a week after its unveiling, there's still probably more than a few devout Atlus fans left paralyzed by the announcement. I can picture them now, staring blankly with gaping maws, as if they'd just wandered into their backyard to find the Loch Ness Monster chilling in the hot tub. Anyway, Atlus has released some new screenshots and artwork for the upcoming PlayStation Vita rhythm action game and they look delightful. I, for one, can't wait to get down on the "Mayonaka Stage" and battle Shadows with rad dance moves. Sounds like an absolute blast.
