The passion and resilience of Super Comboman's Justin W. Posted: 15 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST Eight days ago on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were joined by Interabang Entertainment's Justin Woodward. His story is among the most engaging we've had on the show yet. Justin went from hustling burnt CD to gaining two college degrees, from using his college loans to fund his game to appearing on the IGN reality show The Game House (along with Soundodger+'s Michael Molinari), from moving out to Silent Hill to moving in with Gish co-creator Alex Austin, from failure to success on Kickstarter, from losing it all to the cusp of stardom. Justin's game isn't even out yet and he's already had enough adventures in game development to fill a lifetime. We also remembered to talk about his upcoming game Super Comboman -- a beautiful 2D side-scrolling brawler that allows skilled players to start a combo on the first enemy in a stage that continues on until the very end of the level. Struggles, the game's protagonist, doesn't fit the mold of your average action hero. He's overweight, has a fanny pack and a "front mullet", though these surface level flaws only work to make his perseverance through hardships even more admirable. I was surprised to learn that the the character was inspired by the passion and dedication of real life children with developmental disabilities. All the more evidence that there's more to the work of Interabang Entertainment than you may see on the surface. Thanks so much to Justin for appearing on the show, and tune in next Sunday when we welcome Kyle Reimergartin (Fjords) to the program. It's going to tectonic.
Stick it to The Man! is just as delectably nuts on PC Posted: 15 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST I think it's pretty safe to say that Stick it to The Man! was easily underneath everyone's radar when it landed on PlayStation 3 and Vita last month. The game garnered one of our highest reviews of the year, thanks to it's highly unusual art style and excellent comedic chops, and after getting some hands-on with the PC version that is now available on Steam, I feel like quite the fool for waiting so long to see what all the hype was about. For the most part, the port to PC is pretty straightforward. Options are very minimal for graphic configurations, with only shadows and depth of field settings toggable between off and on. Resolution, at least for my rig, is capped at 1920x1080, but then again this game is all about its incredible hypnotic art style that, I can only assume looks, just as good on systems that meet the game's minimum requirements. Controls work just as smoothly for those inclined to go the keyboard and mouse route as they do with a controller. While the game carries a fair amount of platforming, the jumping mechanics are tight and there is never any pressure to make difficult jumps while running from secret agents that could otherwise make keyboard controls cumbersome in a more frantic action title. Additionally, some of the finickiness of trying to grab things using a controller is resolved with the accuracy that a mouse can offer. My only complaint, which is extremely minor, is that there is no option to remap any of the keyboard controls. Aside from that, there really isn't any reason for those who -- like myself -- missed the PlayStation versions of Stick it to The Man! to not give the game a go now that it's available for PC on Steam. Even better yet, the game can currently be grabbed for only $8.99 till December 20 -- a whopping 40 percent off its normal price.
Final Ultra Street Fighter IV character will be female Posted: 15 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST During yesterday's Capcom Cup -- Capcom's fighting game tournament that dished out $20,000 in prizes this year -- energetic Blanka-loving producer of all things Street Fighter, Yoshinori Ono, finally shed some light on just whom the fifth and final Ultra Street Fighter IV character is. As he took to the stage before the nights final tournament, Ono began by dismissing many of the speculated additions to the Street Fighter IV roster. Hagar of Final Fight and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 fame; Street Fighter Alpha 3's R. Mika; and the rumored Street Fighter adversary, Retsu, were all eliminated from contention. And while Ono was not able to reveal the final character for Ultra Street Fighter IV, what he was able to share was that the last character will be female -- which heavily leads towards fan favorite Karin joining the cast. So who do you think the final character will be, now that we know it's female?
Marvel vs. Capcom games to be pulled from PSN & XBLA Posted: 15 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST Capcom has announced, that by year's end, both Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will no longer be available on the PSN and XBLA stores. While no specific date is listed -- in the post over at the Capcom Unity blog -- for the removal of the full games, the last day DLC will be available to purchase for PSN users is December 17 in North America and December 19 in Europe. Xbox consumers will have a little more time as DLC disappears globally on December 26. For PlayStation patrons still looking to pick these up, Capcom is currently selling the DLC on PSN for 50 percent off. Any XBLA deals have not been planned at the moment. Stay tuned for further updates, once Capcom clarifies the dates these two fighting games go away.
Rad Show: Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix Max 2 Posted: 15 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST When I was a child, I use to collect these small flesh colored rubber men. They were pretty odd, but they were all unique. They were called Muscle Men, and I had an army of them. Then my destructive self decided to let them meet their fate to an exercise bike wheel that acted like a grinder. The little figures melted on to the wheel as it spun. Today, we're gonna play Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix Max 2. I'll most likely get frustrated at not understanding foreign language, so we'll pop in Japan World Cup 3 for the rest of the show.
Sup Holmes ravages and savages with Crazy Viking Studios Posted: 15 Dec 2013 06:50 AM PST This week on Sup Holmes we close up Adult Swimember with Kristofor Durrschmidt (Crazy Viking Studios) of Volgarr the Viking fame. We'll be talking Kris about what drove him to create the greatest Rastan game never made, what he makes of the stats that show that only 4% of Volgarr players bought the game, his work on Shinobi at Griptonite, the best and worst ways to carry on the legacy of arcade-style game design, working at Capcom, and whatever else comes up. Join us at 1pm PST/4PM EST for the full conversation!
Build your Steam Box today; Steam OS Beta now available Posted: 15 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST Have you been holding out on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in lieu of building your very own PC answer to the home console, the Steam Machine? Well wait no further, as the Steam OS Beta is now freely available for human consumption. The Linux-based operating system, based from Debian 7 and dubbed 'alchemist' in its current 1.0 state, comes with quite a few caveats for the time being. For starters, be prepared to have either a fresh hard drive or be willing to sacrifice data from one -- as the current installation methods will erase all content on the desired computer. Additionally, only NVIDIA graphics cards are supported, but Valve is working on adding AMD and Intel support in the near future. For a full list of minimum requirements see below. Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor I have to say I'm pretty intrigued with Valve's take on the home console. SteamOS sounds pretty cool, but as someone who owns an AMD video card, it's not going to be a cheap investment, at the moment, to build my own Steam Machine based off those minimum requirements. For those willing to jump in though, full installation methods of the SteamOS can be found here.
