Mighty No. 9 skin to appear in Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST

If you absolutely, positively cannot wait to play Mighty No. 9, Keiji Inafune and crew seem to be providing an opportunity to at least control a character model of him, assuming you don't mind doing it in Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. A skin based on the character has been announced for the game, which will be packaged in a "special zombie pack" DLC releasing in Japan.

How and if this will appear in other regions has yet to be announced, but considering the massive success of the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter project, it's hard to imagine it won't appear everywhere.

There is something incredibly disturbing about that character model tearing apart a zombie. It's the stuff nightmares are made of.

Take Two talks possible Grand Theft Auto film

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

For such a widely-known property like Grand Theft Auto, a decent film adaptation could do tremendously well at the box office. It would have no trouble breaking into the mainstream with a ridiculous promotional campaign fitting of a blockbuster behind it, which is the way these films tend to go down. Why hasn't a movie happened? The franchise only seems to be getting bigger.

Speaking at the BMO Capital Markets Technology and Digital Media Conference, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said "If you're going to invest in a movie -- you can make a lot of money on movies -- but as a licensor, you've got to look at what the success rate is, what the movie has to do for you to generate substantial economics that are worth taking the risk."

With $1 billion-plus in Grand Theft Auto V sales, Take Two isn't exactly strapped for cash. Continuing, Slatoff said "So if it's a bad movie, does that hurt your franchise or not? So there is always a balance that has to be struck there. But obviously, we consider those inbound requests. We take those inbound requests. So it’s something we consider at this point, but again it's not core to what we do."

ULTIONUS is out now, features music by Jake Kaufman

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

Not long ago, Andrew "DarkFalzX" Bado ran a Kickstarter campaign for the pixel art Metroidvania Legend of Iya, which just barely reached its funding goal in the final hours of its run. Though he has been putting his time into that, he has also managed to collaborate with chiptune virtuoso Jake Kaufman to make a much smaller title. ULTIONUS: A Tale of Petty Revenge is meant as a sort of parody of early '90s games, complete with sidescrolling gameplay and a ludicrously proportioned, skimpily armored female protagonist.

Even if it is meant as parody, it does seem strange to release something like this given the current social climate in games. From the trailer, it appears to celebrate the pandering rather than condemn it, though that is perhaps not the case in the full game. Still, ULTIONUS protagonist Serena S's design is even more surprising considering the praise that Iya's character design has received for its more down-to-earth, modest look.

The music in the trailer above was provided by A-Rival, but the soundtrack for ULTIONUS has been completely composed by Jake Kaufman. There is a livestream listening party on Noise Channel Radio going on right now, and the soundtrack will be available on Kaufman's Bandcamp afterward. The game itself is available now on Windows, Linux, and OUYA.

Fallout 4, The Walking Dead, SOMA & Summer Movies

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 12:30 PM PST

Hey gang! Here's your Destructoid news update for this Thursday. I dabbled in some non-gaming news, I hope you don't mind. There are a lot more exciting movie trailers this week than there are game trailers.

The news: Fallout 4 details leak, Elder Scrolls Online gets a release date, SOMA looks creepy, The Walking Dead Season 2 gets a trailer, Call of Duty: Ghosts gets wolf DLC, and there are trailers for Edge of Tomorrow and Jupiter Ascending, both of which look interesting. There are rumors about Jason "Khal Drogo" Momoa being cast in Zak Snyder's Batman Vs. Superman movie, and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar gets a website and a logo.

Rise of the Indies documentary has a teaser trailer

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

After a successful round of funding from Kickstarter, Studio Bento has come out with a teaser trailer for its documentary about independent game developers, GameLoading: Rise of the Indies.

To date, filming has covered the usual hotspots like PAX Prime, Fantastic Arcade, IndieCade, and GameCity, and interviews with the developers behind Thomas Was Alone, Dwarf Fortress, Gone Home, The Stanley Parable, Ridiculous Fishing, and others.

Filmmakers  Lester Francois and Anna Brady have also set up a site for those wanting to support the documentary through post-Kickstarter crowdfunding. The minimum tier, $25, includes the film, its soundtrack, and a bunch of games from the designers featured in Rise of the Indies.

LEGO The Last of Us should be a real thing

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 11:30 AM PST

This video brightened my day in a huge way. It's an animator's idea of what The Last of Us franchise would look like if taken on by the Traveler's Tales team of LEGO game designers. It is now my new go-to argument in favor of the assertion that any idea, however grim, can be made funny with the proper application of Danish construction blocks.

VICE's The New Kings of Kong checks in on the champs

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

"When I play a game, it's not really for fun -- it's to kick the shit out of this game."

And with that, we have our "villain" in the Donkey Kong high score rivalry between the mild-mannered current record holder Dr. Hank Chien and the outspoken bodybuilder Vincent Lemay, who has the third highest score. Motherboard did a short piece about the competition between the two at The Kong Off 3 in Denver, Colorado.

If you enjoyed 2007's The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, this isn't that, really, but you'll probably still want to check it out regardless. Short, sweet, and to the point.

GOG.com site strains at the start of its Winter Sale

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST

Well, I'm sure this hasn't gone to plan for the folks over at GOG.com; today saw the launch of their Winter Sale and the website has been unreachable for a good portion of the day. Which might be a good thing as this is a sign of interest but it's an annoyance for those of us who wished to buy games. GOG.com sent over an official message confirming it's looking for a solution.

"We're currently experiencing server issues due to the highest traffic ever noted on GOG.com. We did anticipate much interest in our 2013 DRM-Free Winter Sale, as well as our Fallout 1, 2, & Tactics giveaway, but the number of visits exceeded our highest expectations by far. And we mean FAR." Considering that GOG.com is giving away those classic Fallout titles for free is sure to have attracted a lot of interest as I can't remember there being too many problems in the site's past when it came to sales.

"For today, we've prepared double the number of servers that were needed to support our highest day in traffic to date, but it turned out to be not nearly sufficient. We're working on quadrupling our server supply, now." That's a good move as just trying to look at my wishlist on GOG.com was frustrating today.

"We're terribly sorry for all the inconvenience you might encounter today, while visiting GOG.com store. If you're new to the site, rest assure that this is far from our day-to-day standards. We're working around the clock until all the problems are fixed, and everyone can enjoy everything we have to offer." From the quick glances I was able to get of the site, there appears to be a whole new format for the sale including daily deals and big reductions of up to 80% and I'm sure this must be making people's wallets twitch. I'll be checking back tomorrow to see if things have improved.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has a retro-style gameplay mode

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

Tecmo Koei has released some details about a mode found in the upcoming Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z which presents cutscenes with chunky sprites and plays in a 2D scrolling mode, an homage to the original NES and arcade games from the franchise. Unlocked through progress in the main game, Tecmo Koei has stated that "Ninja Gaiden Z" mode will feature a high level of difficulty.

I still have no idea what to make of Yaiba. Part of me wants to appreciate that it's not yet another overblown major franchise entry, none of which I've found to be particularly enjoyable since it went to 3D. And this mode seems designed to speak to that, but it doesn't succeed in making the product feel more attractive. I can't tell if I'm going to love it because it's crazy and exciting or hate it because it's confusing and base, whether what I feel about it is anticipation or dread.

NPD confirms PS4 launch 'biggest in history'

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 09:40 AM PST

After the news earlier today that market research group DFC Intelligence was dubbing the launch of the PlayStation 4 the biggest ever for a console, a statement from Sony President and CEO Jack Tretton confirmed it, backed up by new numbers from the NPD.

"PlayStation 4 sales in North America and worldwide have been incredibly strong since launch, culminating in PS4 being recognized as the largest console launch in history," Tretton explains. "In North America alone, more than one million PS4 units were sold in only 24 hours and we’re pleased NPD has reported that PS4 was the top selling next gen platform for both hardware and software in November."

The figure of one million units sold within 24 hours was impressive and it seems like Sony is able to meet demand for its new hardware fairly well all things considered. Jack concludes: "We are humbled by the passion and excitement demonstrated by gamers for PS4. Demand continues to overwhelm supply, but we're working hard to get PS4 units into the hands of customers throughout the holiday season."

Live show: Eternal Champions: CD

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Join us for Mash Tactics tonight as we take our weekly trip into the past, showcasing the best and worst titles of days gone by. This evening's selection is not only one of the most gruesome (and silly) fighting games ever created, but is also one of my all-time favorites, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, for the Sega CD.

After playing a ton of the new Killer Instinct game recently, my brain has been going through a nostalgia trip remembering the insane amount of fighting games from the '90s. One that always sticks out however, is Eternal Champions: CD. I remember spending hours alongside buddies trying to find the near hundreds of ways to brutally decimate your opponent at the end of a match, and having notebooks full of combos, and set-ups that we'd all contribute to. Now, while the game hasn't exactly aged gracefully, it's still super fun, and as nasty as ever. I'm very much looking forward to jumping in again after not playing it for nearly a decade.

This may be one of the best Smash Bros. screenshots yet

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

It's frigid outside. We're in the midst of a slow period for game news. I've only just now realized I'm out of milk now that cereal is on my mind. On days like this, it's the little things that matter most, such as this daily screenshot from Super Smash Bros.

This isn't our first time seeing the Dr. Wily stage or the Yellow Devil, but it's our best look at the two in action yet. It's possible that the memorable Mega Man boss will play a similar role in Smash Bros., though I have a feeling he's just a hazard for the stage.

Either way, something tells me the pause exploit won't work again.

Explore Secrets of Raetikon on Steam Early Access in Jan.

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

I'm hopeful Secrets of Raetikon will be successful for Broken Rules, based on what I've seen of the aerial exploration title. It's great, but it is also one of those games that's perhaps better experienced on your own as opposed to being told about it.

The developer has announced its Steam Early Access launch date, which is set for January 7, 2014. That could very well be the place where Secrets of Raetikon builds its initial audience. The alpha build will contain the game's single-player campaign and editor, minus the "grand finale," with an expected finished release date of Q1 2014.

My favorite part of the Steam description is the suggestion for players to "grab a robin and feed it to a buzzard." Well, if you say so.

Review: Roxio Game Capture HD Pro

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Game capture devices have gotten easier and easier to use with each passing year. What once was an elite craft is now easily accessible with the right unit, as it's as simple as plug-and-play functionality. Recently I had the chance to test out the Elgato HD -- a device that I now use on a weekly basis for all my recording needs.

So how does the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro compare? Well, it works as advertised for the most part, but it's a bit of a downgrade.

Videogames Clubhouse: Bitin' on some dicks.

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 07:45 AM PST

Remember when we played Call of Duty Ghosts and there were those awful dog sections? Well, as it turns out they were ripped off pretty wholesale from a game called Dead to Rights: Retribution. Sadly, Infinity Ward decided not to rip off the fact that you can bite dudes as a dog. You bite them in the dick.

As soon as we figured this out we knew we had to play it on the Videogames Clubhouse. That's right, we're bitin' dicks today on Dtoid.tv at 2pm pst. You guys should come in and get excited.

Elite: Dangerous alpha is available for select backers

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST

Watching Elite be named as one of the 25 most important games of all time on Charlie Brooker's How Videogames Changed the World, and seeing the first trailer for No Man's Sky reminded me of why I love spaceship games. While X Rebirth didn't deliver on the promise of its trailers, Elite: Dangerous might succeed where that game failed. As of today, some backers on Kickstarter will have access to an alpha which will give them the first chance to play the game in some form.

If you were one of the people who paid £200 backer level, you'll be able to test out the single-player combat mechanics, different weapons, and so forth. That's a lot of money, so here's hoping that the folks playing the alpha are enjoying it. From the trailer, it seems like some flashy and exciting space combat but I assumed the same with X Rebirth. Still it's heartening to see space games like Elite: Dangerous coming back into prominence.

Ski Safari - Adventure Time is out today

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

What do you get when you cross a super mathematical show with the mobile game Ski Safari? Well, Ski Safari Adventure Time would make sense, and that's just what is launching today on the Google Play and iTunes marketplaces. It's basically the first ever instance of Adventure Time merging with an existing brand, which is a sign that Finn and Jake are getting places financially.

I had a chance to play the game myself over the weekend, and I have to say, it's a decent runner. You'll start off as Finn in his skin-tight sleeping bag, then crash into the slopes after an avalanche and take it from there. As you're slip sliding away, Finn can jump onto Jake for a ride, as well as various denizens of the Candy Kingdom and other fan favorite characters.

Basically all you can do is spin moves for points, but constant challenges help keep you striving for more, Jetpack Joyride style. It's very simplistic for sure, but it's a fun way to spend an afternoon. And it's much more of a fitting tribute than Explore the Dungeon was.

Applicant for college coaching job cites Madden skills

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 06:45 AM PST

As the resident Destructoid staff North Dakotan, I feel oddly obligated to report whenever there's videogame news that can be tenuously tied to my home state. As such, the University of North Dakota had a recent applicant for its vacant football coach position who alluded to his extensive experience with the NCAA and Madden games as his credentials to be considered as a serious candidate.

In his cover letter (that was, frankly, pretty great) Christopher McComas boasted that he used to dominate with the Buffalo Bills on Sega Genesis. Once he moved onto the PlayStation, he transformed Marshall University from a middling program to a perennial national powerhouse. That's football savvy at its finest.

However, the best part about his letter of interest was his proposed plan of attack. Under his "Air Raid" offense, his team would see how often they could pass the football. "We're going five-wide. Chucking the pigskin all over the place. Never punt," McComas said. He even included a PowerPoint presentation that included a big picture strategy for winning -- "Recruit great players, win a lot of games, recruit more great players, win more games."

Well, I'm sold. Go ahead and sign this guy up, UND. He has the sort of vision that will (probably) be wildly successful and lead to untold championships. And when that happens, it can all be traced back to videogames.

London Symphony Orchestra to perform Zelda in July

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 06:30 AM PST

Big news coming from Nintendo today. With the excellent Wind Waker HD and A Link Between Worlds currently keeping the Zelda name red hot, the guys at Nintendo have another surprise in store before the year ends. For the first time, London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will perform a fully set Legend of Zelda concert on July 13, 2014 at the Barbican Hall. Symphonic Legends London will have both the LSO and London Symphony Choir working together to perform arrangements by the world renowned duo of Jonne Valtonen and Roger Wanamo.

They ain't holding back on the size either. There's going to be over 200 musicians on stage to bring Hyrule to life in London, making it one of the largest videogame orchestra productions of all time. Nintendo's press release details that Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, and Wind Waker are just some of the games to expect from this new concert. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10AM UK time with a price range of £30 to £85, and you can get them through the official LSO website. You can get more information at the Facebook event page as well.

The Walking Dead S2E1 trailer is so cold and alone

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 06:26 AM PST

"You're either living or you're not. You ain't little, you ain't a girl, you ain't a boy, you ain't strong or smart. You're alive." Clementine hasn't had the most fair of childhoods. But, I suppose that doesn't matter much. She's alive, and that's all that matters.

Episode one of season two, "All That Remains" looks as if it'll explore Clementine's rough and tumble youth in greater detail. Telltale's said that it expects The Walking Dead second season premiere episode to launch this month. Until then, listen to the chilling music in this trailer.

Review: X Rebirth

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

The X series is known for being a little rough out of the gate, so when X Rebirth came out with some major bugs, no one was really surprised. Egosoft has been releasing a lot of patches, but the game is still borderline unplayable. It's more than just a few weird glitches or flaws -- nothing in X Rebirth feels ready to be played.

Beyond just being glitchy, the core gameplay mechanics are flawed. The menu systems are hard to navigate, it's hard to know what you should be doing or what you can do, doing a simple task is an exercise in patience, and I always felt like I was fighting the game's mechanics to get anything done.

There is some good stuff in here, but anything worth playing in X Rebirth was done better by X3: Terran Conflict. X Rebirth was supposed to be a new starting point for the series, a game to bring in new players while keeping the old spirit alive. Instead, we have a game that scares away newcomers and upsets fans of the series.

Not really a winner in my book.

Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen Collection now on iTunes

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 05:45 AM PST

The Pokémon Company has plans to release a bunch of music from its beloved franchise on iTunes now and into next year. The latest release is Pokémon FireRed & Pokémon LeafGreen: Super Music Collection, featuring orchestrated versions of in-game tracks composed by Junichi Masuda, Gō Ichinose, and Morikazu Aoki.

The album is up for purchase on iTunes this week for $11.99 and features 90 songs, though a good portion of them are of course short little tunes. If you immediately scrolled down to the final rival battle music, that makes two of us. Sure does take me back.

I'm going to lose it when the soundtracks for HeartGold and SoulSilver drop, but until that happens next year, there's also the Super Music Collection for X and Y available now.

Aeria has plans to celebrate with some special events in the coming weeks. They're also offering full rebates on any goods purchased in DWO from now until the end of the game, giving those who've held out on playing with pay goods an opportunity to fiddle with them and get credit back later.

Frictional lets imaginations run wild in this SOMA video

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 05:15 AM PST

Its just over a minute of in-engine footage, but it's SOMA footage nonetheless. This is the new sci-fi horror title from Frictional Games, makers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, in case you missed those teasers. The video itself is a brief look at the environments which even in a barren state manage to come across as unsettling -- like something's out there, lurking in the shadows.

In a blog post, the studio talks us through five of its design goals that are meant to serve as a foundation for SOMA: "Everything is story"; "take the world seriously"; "the player is in charge"; "trust the player"; and "thematics emerge through play." In other words, Frictional wants us to become deeply invested in the world but won't resort to forcing it on us.

"The game never tells the player exactly how to progress," writes the developer. "There may be hints and other implicit guidance, but in the end it must be the player that figures out what to do next. If a game is constantly flashing up cues with objectives or showing arrows pointing where to go, the player will never take on the world at a deeper level."

Mega Man: The Board Game kicks off its Kickstarter

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

In case you hadn't heard, board game manufacturer Jasco is producing a Mega Man tabletop game with the approval of Capcom, and now, they have a live Kickstarter. It's meant for two to five players (barring future expansions), and involves card deck movement, as well as a Mega Man 1-centric theme -- you can find the full [tentative] rules here.

It'll use art from the official Archie comic line, which is pretty neat. The above video should give you a basic idea of what the board game is about, as well as what the campaign would use its Kickstarter funds for.

As a side note, the project is almost at $25,000 -- and it's only been active for an hour at the time of this writing.

StarCraft 2 player gets a US visa for being an 'Athelete'

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 04:45 AM PST

Kim "viOLlet" Dong Hwan has become the first professional StarCraft 2 player to get a visa to come to the United States and compete as an athlete. Kim was cleared for a P-1A visa, which is the type of visa given to internationally recognized athletes, to come to the US for five years. He will be able to live in the country and earn wages, just like players in other sports.

Regardless of what you think of gamers as being athletes, it is really cool to see pro-gamers be allowed to come into the country. This will let people from outside the country compete for some really big prizes in American competitions, and it will increase the levels of competition for American players.

Development studio Terminal Reality has shut down

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST

2013 hasn't been to kind to struggling game studios, and it appears we've got another casualty before this rocky year in gaming closes out. It is now reported that the Texas-based game studio, Terminal Reality, has shut down.

In a new report from Gamasutra, Jason Sosa, a former employee of the studio spoke out on his Facebook page and said that the developer "seems to have finally shut down." Other developers from the studio chimed in and talked about the situation, whiling lamenting the loss. Stationed in Austin, the studio has created such titles as Ghostbusters: The Video Game, BloodRayne, Kinect Star Wars, and most recently, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

It's a shame to see another developer close its doors. We at Dtoid wish those affected by this the best of luck.

Europa Universalis IV is getting its first expansion in

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST

Get ready for some new features in Europa Universalis IV, Paradox's massive grand strategy game, because it's getting an expansion soon. Conquest of Paradise will focus on adding better mechanics for both sides of the conquest of the New World. I love playing as the underdog in Paradox's strategy games, so being able to play as native Americans fighting off a bunch of Europeans sounds like a good time to me.

Paradox is also running a contest to see who can come up with the best alternate history short story. The best stories will get published in short story collection, a standard writer's fee, and a bundle with over 50 games from Paradox.

As usual the 3DS is a lot more exciting, as 3D Galaxy Force II is the next game in the Sega 3D Classics line is live. In memory of Destructoid's former Feature Editor Chad Concelmo, 3D Ecco the Dolphin deserves a special mention.  Also, if you haven't heard, the Miiverse came to the 3DS, so go update your system!

The rest of the offerings are a mixed bag, with a demo for Nano Assault EX (and a sale), an AternoBlade demo, Double Dragon, Jump Trials Supreme, Life with Horses 3D, My Style Studio: Hair Salon, and Orion's Odyssey.

CCP laid off 15 people working on World of Darkness MMO

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 03:45 AM PST

CCP is best known for creating EVE Online, but they have another MMO in the works called World of Darkness, which is based on the popular vampire and werewolf pen and paper games of the same name. CCP told Polygon that they had laid off 15 employees working on the project.

CCP said that "The change was due to our evaluation of the game's design and ongoing development needs. While this was a difficult decision, CCP remains committed to the franchise and our promise to make a compelling, rich and deep World of Darkness experience."

World of Darkness has been in development for over seven years, and last year CCP made sure people knew that the game was still coming out. I'm not expecting to see anything on this in the near future, but hopefully we get to play it someday.

New HD texture pack for Thief Gold looks really good

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 03:30 AM PST

Thief Gold has a new HD texture pack created by Bentraxx, and it really makes the fourteen year old game look a lot better. The game is bit dated, but this definitely makes it look good for its age.

Here's a list of what this mod adds to the game:

  • added HD textures for all original missions
  • added new vegetation
  • added new water and lava textures
  • added new torch and fire flames
  • added Fog FX (Applies only to following missions: Escape!, Strange Bedfellows, IntoThe Maw of Chaos)
  • added new Bugbeast HD skin
  • added new Burrick HD skin
  • added new Zombie HD skin (A big Zombie skin-pack update with a setup tool coming soon!!!)

I have never gotten around to finishing Thief, but I played quite a bit of it on a friend's PC a few years ago. It's a really awesome game, and this mod might get me to grab it off GOG.com and spend a weekend playing it.

Runner2 releasing on Vita in less than a week

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST

The PlayStation Vita keeps proving itself to be a serious contender for independent games, with titles like Terraria, Rogue Legacy, and Spelunky either already on the platform or in the works. To add to that list, Gaijin's rhythm platformer Bit.Trip Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien will be available on the Sony handheld on December 17 in North America and December 18 in Europe.

The "Good Friends Pack" featuring characters from various other indie games will be available for Runner2's Vita launch. So you can not only get your run on while cooped up in an airplane economy seat on your way to visit family for the holidays, but you can also do it with Portal 2's Atlas or Machinarium's Josef if you so please.

Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition adds Steam Workshop

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST

As a kid, I played hundreds of hours of Duke Nukem 3D. I even went so far as to go to local tech stores and find "level pack" CDs so I could play more maps than the game could possibly offer, and made a few of my own in my spare time.

Thankfully the Steam version of Duke 3D (the Megaton Edition) has just added Steam Workshop support and a level editor. Basically, the editor allows you to create extra maps for the community and the Workshop lets you share them -- pretty simple stuff.

On its Steam page, Valve notes that there are already 60 maps available for download, all with their own rating system and mini-forum . The game is also 75% off until December 16th.

Cliff Bleszinski wants to make an arena FPS for the PC

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 02:45 AM PST

Cliff Bleszinski, the guy behind the Gears of War and Unreal games, has an idea for his next game. He talked about his idea on the latest episode of the Pointless podcast. Bleszinski said that he wants to make a game without marketing guys telling him what to do, and that he already has a pitch worked out for a first-person shooter. He teased something back in August that could be this new game.

The idea he has in mind would be an arena style shooter for the PC. Bleszinski said that "It will be a PC experience that will hearken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on, if you know what I'm saying." He also made a jab at modern FPS games by saying "a lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is."

I didn't care at all for the Gears of War series, but Unreal Tournament was an awesome game. I'm excited to see what Cliff comes up with for a shooter, and I'll try anything that deviates from the Call of Duty formula.

Tales of Zestiria announced for PS3

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 02:35 AM PST

Namco Bandai has announced that Tales of Zestiria, the latest Tales series game, will be coming to North and South America for the PS3. This is a worldwide announcement -- a first for the series. How nice!

All we know so far is that the RPG will return to its series roots with a fantasy setting. Makoto Yoshizumi, chief producer, says that "this title will be going back to the roots of the series."

All four series designers are on-board for character design: Mutsumi Inomata, Kosuke Fujishima, Daigo Okumura, and Minoru Iwamoto. Cutscenes and openings will be handled by ufotable.

"Over the past few years the Tales Of team has taken great strides to strengthen our relationship with players across North America and Europe," said Tales producer Hideo Baba. "To respond to their love and support I am honored to open a new chapter of the Tales Of series together with Japanese and overseas fans."

YES. More RPGs. More Tales.

Don't miss the two teaser screenshots in our gallery.

PS4: the biggest console launch ever, says market group

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 02:15 AM PST

Market research group DFC Intelligence's latest news brief says that the PS4's launch was the biggest ever for a console game system, with 2.1 million units sold in the first two weeks. That's a lot of tomatoes!

The briefing also points to the next biggest console launches for comparison. The Wii sold 1.6 million units in its first two weeks, coming in at number 2. Sony's PS2 follows with 1.4 million back in March of 2000. What's interesting is that both the Wii and PS2 ended up taking the record for the most successful console systems of all time in terms of total hardware sales.

Maybe the PS4 could be on the same track.

Microsoft's Xbox One passed 2 million units 18 days after launch, which would put it somewhere around the second biggest launch of all time. DFC Intelligence believes that the Xbox One will fare better in the United States than other territories.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge iOS gets a controller update

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

Shantae: Risky's Revenge got a stealth update on iOS last night that allows for the use of MFi controller add-ons. The game was never impossible to play on a touch screen as it wasn't that difficult, but of course, tactile controls always win out for a precision platformer -- or at least, the option for them does.

I gave it a test run with the Logitech PowerShell and I have to say -- it works like a charm. Everything from pressing the L button to dash to the face button layout mirrored the DS controls. For a few moments, I even forgot I was playing on a mobile device. Great work WayForward! I just hope other developers follow suit.

Wasteland 2 beta out for backers, coming to Steam soon

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST

At last, backers of Wasteland 2 can start playing the beta on PC. If you log into your Ranger Center account, you can get a Steam key to start playing. To be eligible for beta access right now, you have to have been one of the original backers for $55 or more. Late comers who have donated $55 or more should have beta access soon, and sometime after that inXile will release it on Steam Early Access.

Brian Fargo, the director for Wasteland 2, made it clear on the latest Kickstarter update that this is a beta, and that the game still has some bugs that will need to be worked out. All of the maps aren't available to play just yet, so the beta will feel more linear than the final release will.

If you haven't backed the game yet, you can still donate to get a copy of the game. $25 will get you the basic digital edition, and $55 will get you the digital edition and beta access.

Halfbrick's Colossatron launching December 19th

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 01:00 AM PST

Halfbrick has announced the release date of their newest mobile game -- Colossatron: Massive World Threat. It'll hit both iOS and Android marketplaces on December 19th, and will be a universal app for the former. Halfbrick is responsible for some of the most fun games on the mobile platform (like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride), so I'm excited to see what they have up their sleeve next.

There isn't a whole lot to go on in the trailer, but I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/90s cartoon feel of the cutscenes. Expect a full review at launch!

GOG Winter sale launches with free classic Fallout titles

Posted: 12 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

We're in mid-December and for me, that means two things: I'm pretty much broke as I've bought so many Christmas presents (you're welcome friends and family) and that there's going to be bargains galore as many online outlets start their winter sales. GOG.com, purveyor of classic and indie titles, has started its promotion and to celebrate, it will be giving away Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics for not a single penny, for the first 48 hours of the sale

Unfortunately, GOG.com won't be able to sell those first three Fallout titles after the end of 2013, so get your grubby mitts on them as fast as possible. In addition to lots of titles being reduced to half price, there will be daily deals and users will receive mystery boxes each day as well.

The sale runs until December 29 and I'm hoping to pick up Privateer 2, Alpha Centauri, and Outcast to add to my PC classics library. On a separate note, I'm also hoping to be able to afford food at the end of the month too.

That Call of Duty Wolf skin DLC is real, out today

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 11:30 PM PST

Remember that rumored skin that changes Riley the dog into a wolf for Call of Duty: Ghosts? Well it's real, and today, you can grab it for $1.99. If you order now, it comes with a bonus derp face, free of charge (timed exclusive).

Oh, and I almost forgot the "best" part -- it's exclusive to Xbox for a limited time! As an aside, the skin changes Riley into a wolf strictly in terms of the killstreak bonus during multiplayer play.

Tiny Brains is now available on Steam

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST

I really enjoyed my time with Tiny Brains on the PlayStation 4, and now, people can pick it up on Steam. It'll be on sale for 30% off ($13.99) until December 18th, at which point it'll revert back to the standard price of $19.99.

For the record, the game is a tad less fun if you're just playing by yourself, but the sale price should help alleviate that hit a bit. Additionally, there is full support for local and online play, so don't worry too much about scrambling to find friends!
