8 Bit Studios, creator of SKARA—The Blade Remains, was recently chosen to take part in a 12 week development programme for start-ups put on by Microsoft Ventures.
SKARA—The Blade Remains will be joined by only one other gaming company this year.
"We are so excited to be a part of the Accelerator Program," said SKARA's CFO Cesar Ortega. "It provides us with many unique advantages going forward as we develop the game, including publishing access to the XboxOne and Windows Phone, and unlimited access to Microsoft's cloud, infrastructure and streaming technology."
As part of the program, SKARA will also receive one-to-one mentoring from Microsoft gaming studios leaders and unique access to the market through Microsoft's customer base and partners. "Microsoft Ventures Accelerator – London – is pleased to welcome SKARA – The Blade Remains Limited into its February 2014 cohort," said Wesley Knowles, Operations Manager for Microsoft Ventures' London Accelerator program. "Competition was stiff, but SKARA , The Blade Remains Limited had the right mix of a great team and a great idea, whilst being coachable and, in our view, having the potential to attract third party funding."
"We look forward to working with them throughout the 12-week programme in 2014 to accelerate their business to the next level," he added.
SKARA plans on bringing versus fighting into a multiplayer online battle arena. By offering a high quality social fighting experience "free to play," SKARA banks on being immediately popular.
"From the beginning we knew our concept is revolutionary for games," said SKARA's Creative Director, Pablo Rodriguez. "In addition to having the chance to learn a lot, having a company like Microsoft's support is further confirmation that we are on the right path." |

| World Tour Fishing Review – Putting the WTF in Serious Fishing Games Posted: 12 Dec 2013 08:42 AM PST By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor) OnRPG Journalist In the last couple of years I have seen more and more games being developed for this hobby that is even considered a sport among some people. I personally am not that big of a fan of fishing, even though a part of my family grew up using a fishing rod as their way of life; maybe that job aspect of it just made it not that appealing for me. However World Tour Fishing recently went into the closed beta testing phase selling fishing as a friend and not just food, so I took up the assignment to see what is so appealing about this 'sport.' Fishing is oversimplified often by the uninitiated. You do not simply throw in your bait and use a net to get the fish as they swim by. Instead we use a large rod, with a fishing line and a hook and we wait until one of these dumb creatures sees the shiny food or lure in the water and take a bite from it. Patience is a virtue, especially with fishing because it can take hours before a fish feels like taking a bite from your bait. Fortunately the fish in World Tour Fishing are a bit hungrier, but patience and precision timing still play a part in the fight. Before you head onto sea with your fishing boat and your expensive fishing rod, you start small, with a rod made from bamboo. In the tutorial you will be introduced as to why fishing can be seen as a relaxing sport, something you do on the weekend when you have absolutely nothing better to do, and you feel like sitting next to a lake with no one and nothing around you. I have actually fished a lot in my life when I was still young, so thanks to my forceful inclusion in family affairs I know enough to offer insight into this game's realism. And I was pleased to say that as soon as the tutorial began, I was seeing plenty of similarities present. You obviously need all the right tools to start fishing; if you do not have all the necessary items you will obviously have a harder time catching fish. Patience comes into play to compensate for this, or so I feared as I placed my virtual hands on my first bamboo rod. Since I have as much patience as a 10 year old kid walking through the gates of Disneyland at dawn, I figured this was going to be a rough introduction to the game. And so the waiting began. Thankfully World Tour Fishing isn't an ugly game, nor is it over the top anime themed like most of the fishing games currently on the market. WTF takes fishing seriously in an attempt to capture real fishers that don't have the time of day to drive 8 hours every weekend to get to their favorite watering hole. When you have swung your mouse around to start fishing, the waiting game starts. After a few teases and swirls in the water as fish contemplate your bait through some sort of RNG system, the dance of death begins. When the fish does become interested you will have a couple of ways to reel in the fish. The game made it a little arcady to make for a challenging and interesting experience that more core gamers will enjoy, but made sure not to lose out on realism in the process. When you have successfully 'engaged' the fish in mortal combat, the reeling stage begins. Your fishing rod does damage over time to the fish, and successful jerks and reels further damage the fish's stamina. Just don't get overzealous as doing so will also build tension on the line, eventually resulting in the line snapping if you don't manage your meter properly. Another form of realism comes in the way you use your fishing rod. If your fish moves to the left, you can try to counter the fish by swinging your rod in the opposite direction, dealing additional damage if timed correctly. When you have finally managed to bring in the fish, you will be able to keep it and release it. By keeping it you can throw it in your fishing tank or sell it for some money. The actual fish your dad struggled with when telling the wide armed tale of the one that got away. At first you will only catch fish that are a couple of centimeters long, not really worth keeping honestly, but a good source of revenue nonetheless for upgrading your tools. Keep at it long enough and eventually you can purchase your own boat and cruise around the lake in style. That's where this game begins to shine.
Conclusion: Good As you can see, fishing is not the greatest hobby I have ever done in my life, and even though I have done it a lot in my life, I still can't enjoy it as much as my family. That said, this game nails the parts of fishing that enthusiasts do enjoy a good deal better than anything else on the market. Meanwhile the UI and mini-game type controls are just enough to keep the gamer in us on the hook. Patience is a virtue, with literally everything that you do while fishing, but thankfully the game itself offers enough quality graphics and precise controls to be taken seriously as a modern MMO. WTF doesn't take long to learn and offers a relaxing and fun title that will be popular among collector's and time wasters alike. If that sounds just right for you, don't miss out on grabbing a beta key before closed beta ends, or you'll be sitting it out on the shoreline wondering where all the fish have gone. |

| DC Universe Online Interview: Rage, Armories, and Update 32 Posted: 11 Dec 2013 02:50 PM PST Questions by Shannon Doyle (Leliah) Answers by Senior Creative Director Jens Andersen I recently had an opportunity to sit down with DCUO's Senior Creative Director Jens Andersen to find out a little more about Update 32, Armories, Rage Powers and more. We also reflected on 2013 and looked ahead to 2014. I'd like to thank Jens for taking the time to answer all of these questions. We can't wait to get our hands on everything.
Leliah: Since Armories were announced the community has expressed a lot of concerns about everything from it being a game breaker to the idea that it will mean more complex and difficult content in the future. Will armories change how the game is played?
[JA] I think that the community in general is pretty excited about Armories. Of course, people have lots of questions regarding them, but all the buzz I have been hearing has led me to believe they can't wait to finally see this system go live – the sooner the better. I think it is safe to say that Armories will change the game a great deal. In fact, I think it might be one of the most important things we have ever added to the game since launch. They will be a huge convenience for players that like to do lots of different activities in DCUO, or want to customize their character's look more easily.
Leliah: How will certain concerns like swapping from PvP to PvE or going from healing to DPS mid combat be addressed?
[JA] We have added a few new mechanics to the game to make sure we are not creating imbalances, while still retaining the convenience and freedom that Armories are meant to provide. First, we put some constraints on how they can be used in both PvE and PvP instances. In both cases, players will be able to switch at any time while out of combat. There is no penalty for this. During PvE combat, we added a new type of cooldown that only allows players to use it once in a while. The 'in combat' and 'out of combat' modes are exclusive, but the cooldown timer is persisting in the background. Meaning, when you drop combat you can switch armories, but if you get back into combat and the armory is still on cooldown, you won't be able to switch again. Second, we completely restricted the 'in combat' use in PvP; players will have to leave combat entirely in order to switch. We felt this was very important to maintaining predictability in PvP.
Leliah: This feature seems to have a lot of players concerned. Is there anything you can say that would perhaps calm nerves?
[JA] The great thing about DCUO is that we are always able to make refinements to the game. We want our players to get the best experience possible and really take community feedback to heart. That said, we've heard a lot of excitement and anticipation through our channels, so I encourage anyone with questions to talk with other players on the forums. We have thought about these systems for quite some time, and I think players are really going to enjoy Armories.
Leliah: So much of Update 32's buzz has been around armories. And we also know that the holiday event will launch with it. But what other things can we expect in the update?
[JA] To clarify, Armories are actually separate from GU32 and are coming to DCUO in early 2014. The Nature and Sorcery revamps are a couple of the biggest things coming with GU32. Our community has been waiting for the two power revamps for some time and we're happy to finally roll those out. This update will also restrict the Home Turf trinkets in PvP death matches. Players found that the death matches were dragging on extra long since the Home Turf trinkets came into play, so we decided to remove them from that game mode.
Leliah: Ever since the War of the Light DLC was announced people have been eager to get information about it. What can you tell us about War of the Light?
[JA] War of the Light Part I is a significant DLC. Not only because it will be the first of the trilogy format we plan on implementing, but it will be our first attempt at revisiting one of the major cities in DCUO. Metropolis has been totally re-envisioned for the War of the Light and the old content has all been replaced with missions that deal with the new storyline. Players will see Mogo and Ranx in the sky, and lanterns from four of the major Corps doing battle around them. We also got some great feedback from our players and reworked how the rewards will be distributed for completing the content. It's a new dawn in DCUO with the launch of War of the Light Part I.
Leliah: Rage Power has been hinted at here and there, and there have been several forum goers who have guessed that it would be coming. But no one has heard anything about what it's actually like. So, what is it like? And how will it fit in with others?
[JA] Rage powers are pretty cool. It features a new type of tanking mechanic for players to master called "Rage Crash." Players can activate abilities that allow them to take damage but then heal it right back. This effect lasts for the duration of the ability – 8 seconds – and then the health that was healed is then reapplied as damage. Players can mitigate this by activating other abilities, or they can avoid it all together by keeping rage combos going or activating their supercharge. It takes a lot of skill, but if players master Rage Crash they can avoid taking any damage altogether; but, take care, if anything goes wrong, the crash can be devastating.
Leliah: Has a date been decided on yet for when War of the Light will be available?
[JA] War of the Light Part I will launch early in 2014.
Leliah: What were some of the biggest challenges the development team faced in 2013?
[JA] Hands down I would say that getting DCUO on the PS4 while trying to maintain our normal development was a huge challenge. The team really rose to the occasion.
Leliah: In your opinion what was the biggest thing to come to DCUO in 2013, perhaps something that has yet to arrive?
[JA] Aside from launching on the PS4, it's too hard to point at any one thing. From the DLCs and powers that were added, to quality of life improvements in the UI, and all of the new systems that entered the game, 2013 was a huge year for DCUO. I think some of my favorite things that were added came with the Legends characters, like Cheetah and Circe. I really love playing them in Legends PvP.
Leliah: Was there perhaps something on the table for 2013 that everyone really wanted to work on but it just never happened?
[JA]We really wanted to get armories out sooner, but it will just miss the 2013 calendar year. It is a bummer, but we want to make sure our players get a polished product and the best experience possible, even if that meant holding its release. In the end, it will be worth the wait.
Leliah: What are the studio's goals for 2014?
[JA] To chew bubble gum and kick ass…but I think we're all out of bubblegum. In all seriousness, we're really excited for what 2014 holds. We have a lot of great content and new features coming up in the new year that I think our players are really going to like.

| Channel The Power of Rage in DC Universe Online: War of the Light Posted: 11 Dec 2013 02:17 PM PST On the heels of the game’s PlayStation®4 release, Sony Online Entertainment, LLC (SOE) today announced the next installment in the DC Universe™ Online (DCUO) narrative — War of the Light Part I. Introducing a brand-new storyline, the ninth downloadable content (DLC) pack introduces the Blue Lantern Corps to DCUO and brings a new power set — Rage, which can be used by both heroes and villains. Players will also have access to new Legends PvP characters — Saint Walker and Atrocitus. The DLC will be available for download on the PC, as well as the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PlayStation 4 system early next year. “Our first DLC introduced Light Powers and allowed players to feel the awesome abilities of the Power Rings employed by Hal Jordan and Sinestro in the pages of the comics,” said Jens Andersen, Senior Creative Director for DC Universe Online. “With War of the Light Part I, we are adding another light power to the mix, this one fueled by the Red Light of Rage. Rage Powers will have a brand new tanking mechanic for players to master, adding a whole new strategy to group content.” “War of the Light Part I will let players explore new and reimagined environments in DCUO. They will notice changes to Metropolis, which has been affected by this new war of light, and for the first time they will journey to Mogo, the sentient Green Lantern Planet, and Ranx, the Sentient Sinestro Corp City. These environments play a big part in the storyline and we look forward to expanding each of them as the trilogy unfolds,” Andersen continued. War of the Light Part I is one of three upcoming downloadable content packs that focus on characters that manipulate power from the Emotional Spectrum. Players can expect to see additional corps introduced by the end of the trilogy. In War of the Light Part I, lanterns of all colors have lost connection with their emotional spectrum entities. Following cryptic evidence, four Corps — Green, Blue, Sinestro and Red — converged on Earth determined to find their entities. The clash of Lantern Corps has resulted in a new war of light, centered in Downtown Metropolis and nearby sentient planets Mogo and Ranx. Players must team up with Hal Jordan or Sinestro in high-level multiplayer adventures to investigate the colored mists that have descended upon Metropolis and are affecting the citizens’ emotions. War of the Light Part I will include:
DCUO’s War of the Light Part I DLC pack will be a free download for the game’s Legendary members and will be available later this winter for purchase by Free and Premium players via the PlayStation®Network, the in-game Marketplace, or for PC players via the DCUniverseOnline.com website. |
