Bioshock: Burial At Sea, RIP Fez II, GTA has purple cars

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 03:15 PM PDT

Hey gang! Here's today's Destructoid Show. Because Tuesdays.

The first Bioshock Infinite DLC has been released, with later DLC plans revealed, and Caitlin sat down with Ken Levine himself to discuss it. Fez II has been cancelled, thanks to a bunch of internet toilet-garbage hatecrap. People are so impatient for more Grand Theft Auto V news, they've started modding GTA V mechanics into IV. Finally, Microsoft discusses self-publishing on Xbox 360, and some of the Xbox One's matchmaking features.

Sonic is too fast for Ocarina of Time

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Vinesauce is at it again! On our previous trip through Ocarina of Time, Hyrule was transformed into a glitch-ridden nightmare hole. This time, Vinny used a special mod to play the game as the supersonic hedgehog Sonic. Or "Sanic," as he's known in certain circles.

Sonic ain't got time for dialog boxes and cinematic events. He's gotta speed, keed! He's gotta motor, Rotor! He's gotta juice, Bruce! Up, over, and gone, and all that jazz!

PS Plus: Dokuro for free, Max Payne 3 for eight bucks

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

This week's addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection is Dokuro, a PlayStation Vita puzzler-platformer from Game Arts. It's got skeletons and an art style reminiscent of children's books -- and it's regularly $13.99, so "free" sounds terrific to me.

Elsewhere in the store update, PixelJunk Monsters: Ultimate HD is discounted to $11.99 for Plus members, while Max Payne 3 is $7.99 (or $9.99 for everyone else) and the Ultimate Edition is $11.99 (or $14.99 for all users). Those are some mighty fine prices.

Get schooled, literally, by new roguelike Dungeonmans

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Lend me your ears for another tale of a former AAA workhorse who packed his bags his and moved onto the rich, fertile lands of independent development. Jim Shepard, whose resume includes time spent at studios such as Raven Software, Gearbox, and BioWare, has been slowly working on another pet project over the past few years: Dungeonmans.

Dungeonmans is a roguelike from a man who knows his way around a tabletop RPG. Aside from the usual roguelike trappings -- permadeath, loot collection, etc. -- there is an Academy that you can stock and expand with artifacts and texts you discover during your travels. Should you die and be forced to start with a new character, you will be able to use the resources of the Academy to gain an edge, allowing for expedited progression rather that having to climb back up from the bottom rung after each failure.

There is a pretty beefy demo that you can download here, but in order to get that little extra push to finish the game, Shepard set up a Kickstarter. I'm a little late learning about this, so there are only three days remaining until donations close, though it looks like the $35K goal should easily be met. And while you're at it, vote for the game on Steam Greenlight too.

Sonic Lost World's 'aggressive' language is exactly that

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

It wasn't terribly long ago that we got regular laughs out of Entertainment Software Board ratings. When reading a summary of a videogame mostly free of context, silliness is bound to crop up. The rating for Sonic Lost World has gotten some attention for a different reason:

During gameplay, characters sometimes use aggressive language (e.g., "You're going home in a box," 'I'm going to skin you alive,' and 'I long for death's cold embrace.'). Cutscenes also depict laser fire and explosions, as well as dialogue that references violence (e.g., "I'll get fat from eating your black hearts," "One second you're contemplating genocide," and "As long as I can still strangle a Zeti, my hands are fine.").

This, in a game where an anthropomorphic hedgehog runs through a world with floating donuts. Clearly, I've been out of the Sonic loop for far too long.

Punishing platformer Cloudberry Kingdom is out this week

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Wow. I had completely forgotten a) Cloudberry Kingdom, that brutal-looking platformer with randomly-generated levels, even exists and b) that it was originally funded via Kickstarter -- with a $20,000 goal, no less. Guess what? It's out this week! On PlayStation Network (today), Xbox Live Arcade/Steam (July 31), and Wii U eShop (August 1). There's also a PlayStation Vita version planned for "later this year."

This should appeal to those of us who enjoy the challenge of, say, Super Meat Boy with the unpredictability of recent roguelikes. I still think the art style is a bit gross, but it's better than the original pitch for Cloudberry Kingdom and it does get the job done. More than anything, I'm dying to give the co-op a try. There's going to be lots of yelling. Sorry, neighbors.

Take-Two has its chin up despite a down first quarter

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 10:15 AM PDT

Take-Two may have lost money in the first quarter of the 2014 fiscal year, but it has high hopes for the remainder of the year. The publisher, who owns Rockstar Games and 2K Games, reported a first quarter net loss of $61.9 million, and revenue of $142.7 million -- a decline of 36.9% when compared to the same time in fiscal 2013.

The drop didn't necessarily take the company by surprise. It called the financial results "better than expected". The largest contributors to the three-month revenue were Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13, Grand Theft Auto IV, and BioShock Infinite -- all games that released outside of the quarter one window. The year-over-year decrease in revenue can, in part, be attributed to Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line being released during the first quarter of fiscal 2013.

A bright spot was the release of XCOM: Enemy Unknown on iOS. CEO Strauss Zelnick said that its strong sales at $20 proved that "gamers are willing to pay a premium price for a premium experience." He added that Take Two would look into adapting more big budget games to mobile platforms.

Zelnick also stated that BioShock Infinite had surpassed four million sales, and is Take-Two's strongest multi-platform release so far this year. Additionally, he said that the company expects it to become the best selling BioShock game.

Take-Two seems certain that it's weak first quarter will be offset by the second quarter and the rest of the year. Citing Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K14, and WWE 2K14, the publisher feels that fiscal 2014 is shaping up to be one of its best years ever.

Review: Teleglitch: Die More Edition

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Teleglitch, released late last year, is quite a wonderful roguelike. It's also really incredibly difficult. Like, "good luck getting to level five" difficult. So when I heard about an upgraded version titled "Die More Edition," I got pretty frightened. How much harder could it get?

Way harder.

Terraria Collector's Edition comes to console

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Earlier this year, the Terraria Collector's Edition released for PC, and shortly afterward, the 2D dig-a-thon came to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Now that the downloadable has been successful on those platforms, the collector's edition is chiseling its way onto consoles, with a few minor changes.

Replacing the pickaxe keychain is a pickaxe flash drive, and replacing the trading cards are vellum stickers. The included poster is also different; where the PC collector's edition poster featured images of the monsters, the new poster is more functional, with recipes for crafting some of the rarer gear. Oddly, while the Xbox 360 version features the game on a disc, the PlayStation 3 version comes with a download card, which might defeat the purpose for some collectors.

The good and bad of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Final Fantasy XIV was a disaster. I never played the original version, but from what I hear it was pretty bland and uninspired in all areas. It takes some serious gall, as well as business sense, to straight up cancel an MMO and rework it from the ground up. Square Enix has done just that with the second Final Fantasy MMO, now adding the title A Realm Reborn.

An apt name, it seems, as playing through the various closed beta sessions over the past months has been quite a delight. Playing MMOs can be quite exciting when they're executed well. That being said, I definitely have some reservations about FFXIV: ARR; not everything was peaches and rainbows.

Here's the first set of Disney Infinity Power Discs

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Toys I could handle. But Power Discs? Oh, we're delving into dangerous territory now. Disney Interactive has lifted the lid on the first wave of Disney Infinity's Power Discs, which give characters new powers (Circular discs), or unlock gadgets, vehicles, or themes that can be applied to Toy Box mode (Hexagonal discs). Just watch this short trailer to see how it works.

These things will be available in blind packs of two for $4.99, because of course they freakin' will. And let's not forget rare discs. All I want is Abu as an elephant, darn it! Two of the Circular Power Discs can be stacked together, while up to three Hexagonal Power Discs can be used simultaneously. Look for the full Series 1 list below.

Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer reveal dated

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Yes, we were already told that the multiplayer reveal for Call of Duty: Ghosts would be happening in mid-August. You didn't dream that. Today, Infinity Ward has brought some specifics: a live event on Wednesday, August 14 at 10:30am Pacific will "go in-depth on all things multiplayer, and will include several world premiere announcements."

In other news, eff yes, I finally got to use this ridiculous image.

Humble Bundle: Saints Row, Dead Island, Risen 2

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Deep Silver is the latest publisher to get a Humble Bundle. For the next two weeks, you'll be able to save big on franchises like Dead Island and Saints Row. The pricing breakdown is slightly different this time, so here's what you need to know:

  • Pay what you want: Saints Row 2, Saints Row: The Third, Risen, Risen 2: Dark Waters, and Sacred 2: Gold Edition
  • Pay more than the average: Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition and Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package (DLC)
  • Pay $25 or more: Dead Island: Riptide

And in typical Humble Bundle fashion, soundtracks are included as well -- the lowest contribution tier comes with access to the soundtracks for Riptide, The Third, Risen 2, and Sacred 2.

Ubisoft alters Mighty Quest so it isn't pay to win

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT

One of the biggest concerns about large publishers entering the free-to-play scene is that they'll shamelessly exploit the monetization aspects of their games to the extent that the entire experience becomes pay to win. Only time will tell if that holds true, but at least there's one glimmer of hope on the horizon.

Ubisoft announced recently that it's revamping The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot's premium currency structure due to beta players' feedback. Many felt that the game went too far in what it allowed users to pay real-world money for, and that it unbalanced Mighty Quest to the point of it becoming pay to win. In response, Ubisoft is scaling back what can be bought, and seemingly putting the integrity of its game at the forefront.

Not all publishers have this attitude when it comes to microtransactions. Hell, Ubisoft's approach might even change from title to title. But even if it's an isolated incident, it's nice to see that someone actually gets it.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is getting a PC demo

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

[Update: the demo is up on Steam right now.]

The polarizing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is coming to PC soon as an Ultimate Edition, and according to Konami, the demo is hitting Steam tomorrow. While it isn't my favorite game in the franchise by far, I still enjoyed it for the God of War-like it was, and if you have a PC and haven't played it yet, I strongly urge you to give it a try.

If you're itching for the real thing, the full game will drop on August 27 with the two DLC packs in tow, and it's getting a European physical release on August 30.

Xbox One's revamped multiplayer matchmaking detailed

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 05:30 AM PDT

Smart Match, the new matchmaking system for Xbox One, sounds like a natural extension of the current setup on Xbox 360. Users will be paired together based on skill, language, and reputation and other criteria including age and "specific gameplay style" which all sounds good in theory, but we'll see. A post on Xbox.com walks through a few of the highlights.

If you're more concerned with just getting into an online match as soon as possible, that's where Smart Match really seems to come together. Freeing us from waiting around in lobbies, with digital games, you can play one while the matchmaking for a second game is being set up. Xbox.com also suggests things like reading Reddit on the console with the Snap mode functionality that allows you to do two things simultaneously. Nice name drop there.

Once your match is finalized, you'll get a pop-up notification -- no matter where you are -- that can bring you back into the original game. Slick. I also like the sound of being able to set up matches for your entire Xbox Live party -- that could come in handy.

See how GTA V's combat is similar to Max Payne 3

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT

YouTube user datarace1 took some of the gameplay footage from the last Grand Theft Auto V video and compared the combat mechanics against Max Payne 3. There's a lot of similarities, which isn't really surprising as there's a lot of elements from past Rockstar games all implemented in different ways here.

Ultimately, this is good news for those that never liked GTA's combat in the past.

Crusader Kings collides with Europa Universalis

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 04:50 AM PDT

Europa Universalis IV, one of my most anticipated releases of the year, is only a fortnight away. As we enter August, the final pre-order bonus has been revealed by Paradox Interactive, and it's a doozy: a free copy of Crusader Kings II and a savegame exporter.

The latter might not seem like a big deal, but it's a real treat. The exporter will convert a CKII savegame file into a EUIV one, allowing players to keep their empire and their holdings, and experience the Renaissance altered by the centuries of medieval intrigue and conquest that played out in their game of Crusader Kings

To show how the exporter will work, Paradox is showcasing the feature in a livestream right now on their Twitch channel. Handy.

EarthBound director Itoi reflects on what it means to him

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 04:30 AM PDT

The nearly twenty-year-old cult classic EarthBound means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. On EarthBound's official page, series creator Shigesato Itoi reflects on what the game means to him after all this time.

All sorts of people tell me about their memories,
about all the things I left in the playground called Earthbound.
From the tiny safety pins, broken pieces of colored glass to the withering leaves.
When I ask them, “how do you remember so much?”
With their eyes gleaming, they say,
“I love that world so much I remember everything about it.”
I reply right away saying “me too.”

He goes on to discuss life and death, including how he would like to be remembered after he dies. Itoi suggests that fame, fortune, accolades, and accomplishments are meaningless compared to sincere stories told, and he suggests that EarthBound holds to that ideal.

Ken Levine on BioShock Infinite's new DLC, Burial at Sea

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Irrational Games, and Ken Levine in particular, have been known for creating games with innovative narratives and unique gameplay. BioShock Infinite is no different, and we expect the same for the remaining downloadable content we've been promised, including Burial at Sea, announced earlier today.

The team at Irrational started working on the Burial at Sea DLC almost immediately after BioShock Infinite released, but the idea took some time to form. Ken explained, “I was running one day and the idea just started […] You’re Booker, you’re a private detective and this woman walks into your office like this classic sort of film noir [...] and that is Elizabeth dressed like Veronica Lake or something. That image was enough to sort of set everything into motion."

Ken mentioned that he wanted to stay away from telling a story just to tell it -- he knew that people were curious about what it was like before the fall of Rapture, but wanted to do it in a way that wouldn't rehash what they had already built in BioShock.

"We knew it had to start with, like all BioShock games, ‘what’s going on here, why is this happening?’, because otherwise you’re telling people what they already know. Retelling the story of what’s already in the audio logs of BioShock is not very interesting, so this is an opportunity to listen to it from the perspective of these characters and why they are there.”

Retailer outs Capcom bundle featuring five major games

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 02:30 AM PDT

EB Games Canada has a listing for Capcom Essentials, a 5-in-1 pack containing five of Capcom's biggest franchises. The pack is planned for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for $59.99, and will include Devil May Cry 4, Dead Rising 2, Super Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 6, and Mega Man 10.

All these games were the last major entries to the franchises, and I'm going to have to assume these are all the vanilla editions (so excluding downloadable content additions). With the exception being Devil May Cry 4, of course. DmC: Devil May Cry was the last entry to that series, so either Capcom skipped including it because they weren't too happy with how it did, or you know, it's still too new for it to be too heavily discounted for a bundle like this.

EB Games is saying this will be out on August 10, 2013. We've reached out the Capcom for the official word on this.

Aveline's story continues in Assassin's Creed IV

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT

In case you missed it, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners of Assassin's Creed IV will get special bonus content featuring Aveline de Grandpré, the main hero of the PlayStation Vita exclusive, Assassin's Creed III: Liberation. Jill Murray, writer of Liberation, is also returning to continue this story.

The exclusive content is about an hour long, and stars an older Aveline as the story takes place sometime after Liberation. "It’s not directly related to the end of her story," lead writer Darby McDevitt explained. "If Assassin’s Creed IV is like a novel, Aveline’s missions are like a short story."

The Ubisoft blog also shared some pictures of Aveline in Assassin's Creed IV. Two! Two whole pictures! How very generous of them.

Next BioShock Infinite DLC is taking us back to Rapture

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 12:01 AM PDT

Irrational Games revealed the intentions for their remaining BioShock Infinite downloadable content plans to follow up the Clash in the Clouds DLC: Burial at Sea, a Booker and Elizabeth tale set on the eve of Rapture's downfall. Yes, you heard me. Booker and Elizabeth in Rapture! Together! ALL FILM NOIR-LIKE!

Burial at Sea will be released in two episodes. In the first, you play as Private Detective Booker who is enlisted by Elizabeth on some unknown task before Rapture falls. Players will be able to see Rapture in its prime including a built-from-scratch world and new characters, along with some old ones. The gameplay merges favorites from BioShock and BioShock Infinite, and includes new Vigors/Plasmids, tears, Sky-Lines, and Big Daddies.

But forget that boring stuff. In the second episode YOU GET TO PLAY AS ELIZABETH. Not much else has been said about this as they're just scratching the surface. From what it sounds like from my interview with Ken Levine (check back later today for that), the second episode will be more focused on survival horror and stealth mechanics.

Burial at Sea: Episode 1 (and presumably 2) will be included in the BioShock Infinite Season Pass, otherwise they'll cost $15 each. No release date has been set for either, but I imagine the first episode will hit before the end of the year.

Awesomenauts debuts new Gnabot skin and re-works

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 09:00 PM PDT

If you haven't played Awesomenauts in a while, you'll find that a hefty update has been added to the game that most notably debuts the new Gnabot skin for Gnaw. Of course, this is only for the PC, Mac, and most recently, Linux versions. In other news, Ronimo has also patched Awesomenauts, mostly fixing a number of bugs, with a few re-works as well. For instance, Clunk has been nerfed a bit, and Voltar has been buffed in a few ways.

I have to give it to Ronimo -- it's been over a year since the console release, and they're still supporting the PC game with the occasional balance patch and piece of content. As for my wishlist, I feel like the roster is pretty bulky at this point, so some new modes, levels, and possibly support for four players would be great.

It's like Super Smash Bros, but with anime characters

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Okay, so it's probably more fair to say J-Stars Victory Vs is like Power Stone with anime characters. Or really, like any of the Dragon Ball Z games, but with a bunch of characters from other shows like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and a bunch of others I'm not familiar with at all.

Looks fun! Namco Bandai is behind this one, and it's planned for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Possible western release? Doubtful, seeing as half of the roster that was on display in this debut trailer have yet to make an impact outside of Japan.

So, I played this 'Golf Ball Picker-Upper Cart' sim

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

I'm not usually prone to playing straight-faced simulation games. You know the ones. If I ever did, it would be for a laugh rather than an actual desire to get enjoyment out of performing digital recreations of mundane tasks. Part of me feels guilty when I know perfectly well that people genuinely enjoy Train Simulator 2013, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and the like. To bag on this software I don't fully understand the appeal of makes me feel like a jerk.

As such, I'm trying to avoid doing that going forward, even if it can be challenging. Earlier today, I came across something called -- this is the literal title, it's worth pointing out -- Driving Range Golf Ball Picker-Upper Cart Simulator 2013. A bit of a giveaway, perhaps, that this free PC game isn't totally serious. It's also the result of the Something Awful Game Dev VIII Challenge which was all about "subversive edutainment." Uh huh.

I felt the strange urge to try it out, likely because my teenage brother has a part-time job involving, at times, driving one of these contraptions. After spending approximately 90 seconds collecting golf balls, I decided to run over a man with my cart just to watch him die*. I'll have you know he looked like a sad Stretch Armstrong that had been stretched one too many times, and that I regret nothing. Some things never change

*Also, a quote popped up and the screen faded to black when the dude's body fell apart like Silly Putty, so that means if I am a complete sociopath, at least I'm not alone.

This Pokemon 3DS peripheral looks ridiculous

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Pokemon Tretta is an arcade game over in Japan, and now players can sync up the arcade game to their 3DS with the Tretta Lab free app. But you're going to have to buy a gigantic peripheral that can attach to either the 3DS or 3DS XL for about $40 in order for the free app to be of any use.

You'll then have to spend more money to obtain tiles that contain specific Pokemon on them. You'll insert these tiles into the device, and from there you can view your Pokemon, compare different Pokemon, or send your pocket monsters to fight. So it's basically like Skylanders, or the other Pokemon game that's a blatant copy of Skylanders. Except, you know, not as fun looking.

DKS's Reality Death Maze could only exist on Kickstarter

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 05:30 PM PDT

Kickstarter has changed the way games are promoted, developed, and sold. That's pretty darn great, but with new frontiers always come new questions. What does it take to succeed in market where the consumer can decide what games bring in money before the games even exist? What games really belong on Kickstarter? What games best deserve that caliber of grassroots support?

Perhaps the answer lies in DKS's Reality Death Maze and its close cousin Zombii Outbreak. There are games that defy conventional concepts of "marketability", crafted by industry mavericks who are unashamed to produce work that exists outside of the conventions and standards that most human beings are accustomed to.

Maybe this is why God made Kickstarter -- for developers that truly have no other option. Is it fair for industry veterans with multiple potential paths to profitability (publishers, grants, loans, work for hire) to hog all that Kickstarter cheddar while the folks at DKS are brimming with ideas but are starved for means? It may sound uncouth, but I'm fairly certain that crowd funding is the only hope that Reality Death Maze and Zombii Outbreak have of being born into this world. Even still, can we expect the laws of space and time to accept the existence of these two reality defying articles of humanity? I suppose it'll be up to you, dear reader, to decide what becomes real and what remains in the intangible realm of idea.

Virtual reality game HydraDeck puts you behind cover

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

HydraDeck seems like an appropriately tech demo-y name for a game that uses both an Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset and the Razer Hydra motion controller to put you behind cover. The gameplay premise may not be as novel as it was even a few years ago, but leave it to VR to make shooting at aliens from behind cover fresh again.

Teddy0k, the creator of this project, has been putting out updates on the Oculus Developer Forums. In this video demonstration, we're looking at version 0.2 of HydraDeck, so if this picks up steam there could be more on the way. I hope he keeps iterating even if I can't play it myself.

As impressive as the game is, I'm immediately compelled to think about where this hardware combination could go beyond cover-based shooting. Imagine a first-person sword-fighting game or, better yet, some fresh hell from the creators of Amnesia. Those were just the first two that popped into my head; countless other ideas could greatly benefit from this enhanced level of immersion. We just need enough people who want these experiences for them to get made.
