New Assassin's Creed comic focuses on an Indian Assassin

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Assassin's Creed: Brahman is the next graphic novel based on the popular series by Ubisoft. This entry to the Assassin's story takes place in 19th century India and follows Assassin Arbaaz Mir as he fights against British colonial rule.

The story is written by Brenden Fletcher, with the art done by Cameron Stewart and Karl Kerschl. This is the same team behind the other Assassin novels, The Fall and The Chain.

So yeah, there you go. Indian Assassin. Neat! Check out the sample pages over in our gallery.

EA pushing forward with Dead Space movie

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

The idea of a Dead Space film has been thrown around for several years now, but news out of Comic-Con suggests EA could be more seriously pushing the property towards becoming a film franchise. Maybe Dead Space 3's "disappointing" sales have something to do with the film's resurgence, but EA has already put a Need for Speed film starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul in the can, so perhaps this is merely the future of all of EA's franchises.

According to Variety, EA is planning to take more control over how its franchises are developed into movies, rather than just pitching, for example, the idea of Dead Space film. “We decided we have to pitch the projects as scripts,” EA's overseer of film adaptations Patrick O’Brien said. “EA was batting 0 for 5 before we began funding scripts. We’ve had our knocks in the studio system.” The "0 for 5" apparently refers to failed attempts at getting Sims, Spore, Mass Effect, Army of Two, and Dante's Inferno made into films. Dante's Inferno. Ugh.

So clearly EA is now doing more than waving its fancy, triple AAA properties at movie studios like handkerchiefs and hoping they all trip over themselves for the honor of making EA's films. Good. Hiring writers to actually craft scripts to pitch is a much better idea. Incidentally, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li scriptwriter Justin Marks is writing the Dead Space script. Welp.

Still, that doesn't mean it will turn out badly. Whatever studio picks up the film will probably develop the script and do rewrites, like Dreamworks spent six months doing after picking up Need for Speed. Plus, let's all remember that John Carpenter (The Thing) himself has expressed interest in directing a Dead Space flick. Any other directors you think might be good? Any actors in mind to play Dead Space's memorable characters? Wait. Does Dead Space have characters? Well, I at least vote Doug Jones to play all the monsters.

Here's the winning fan-made Fable Anniversary Achievement

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Earlier this month, Lionhead Studios put the call out for fans to design their own Achievement to be integrated in Fable Anniversary. The results are in, and the winning entry "Are you not entertained!?" will require players to complete all eight rounds of the Arena without taking a break.

So, not exactly the most inventive Achievement out there, but at least one of the runners-up -- "Obtain every melee weapon in the game (excluding Avo's Tear or Sword of Aeons)" -- didn't take the top prize. I can never earn those. The "Farticus" Achievement for passing gas on Whisper in the Crucible before deciding her fate seemed like a lock, but I guess not.

The DTOID Show: Seaman, Strider, & Adam Sessler!

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 12:15 PM PDT

Howdy, folks! Max is off in Hawaii being attacked by giant birds this week, so I got television's Adam Sessler to take his place on today's show. For the record, his hosting skills are impeccable but his drawings could use some improvement.

Today's topics of discussion include Capcom's new Strider game, EarthBound's release on the Wii U, and Nintendo's mysterious trademark for what could be a new Seaman game. We also talk about OUYA's latest Kickstarter efforts, and all the bonus content Ubisoft has been adding to Rayman Legends.

Suffice it to say, September 3 cannot come fast enough!

Poke BEEMO in the face with this new Adventure Time app

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

BEEMO! IT'S BEEMO! ON YOUR PHONE-O!

The lovably little computer from Adventure Time is now a free app for your iPhone and iPad! BEEMO will happily greet you upon launch, and then you can do all sorts of things with the app. Play a game of Pro Football 1861, take pictures with Adventure Time characters, play with a soundboard featuring multiple characters, and it even has alarm settings.

Not everything is available just quite yet, as there are a couple of more games that will be added later. We can expect ringtones, music, and wallpapers to be added too.

It's not the deepest experience ever, but it's fun hearing BEEMO talk to me. It's so cute! POKE BEEMO IN THE FACE!

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational coming to PS3

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT

More Hot Shots Golf on PlayStation 3, even if it's a game fans will have experienced already on PS Vita, is a good thing. Ideal? Probably not. But still good! 2012's Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational will find its way to PS3 on July 23 for $19.99 with support for PlayStation Move. European PSN users are getting it a day later for €14.99/£11.99.

Owners of the portable version of World Invitational will retain all of their DLC for PS3 thanks to cross-buy support, and a new Vita patch will allow both types of players to compete against one another in online tournaments. All told, I think they're handling this pretty well.

Massive prepared for The Division by eating leaves

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Prior to the reveal of Tom Clancy's The Division at E3, Ubisoft shot a behind-the-scenes video with Massive to document everyone's emotions in the days leading up to the announcement of the game. There's a lot of normal "we hope everything goes off without a hitch" banter until Nicklas Cederstrom, the creative director, explains that he ate leaves and flowers to prepare to make The Division.

Apparently, in an attempt to understand what's it's like to need to survive without everyday luxuries, the team went out into the wilderness and roughed it for a few days. "I would never do it again. Leaves taste really bad when you boil them, but you have to survive," Cederstrom said.

Hopefully, this all leads to the creation of a better game, but I'm having a tough time directly correlating the two. I'm going to go out on a limb and venture that you unnecessarily ate leaves, dude.

Soulcalibur 2 HD Online coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 10:45 AM PDT

[Update: Online multiplayer has been confirmed, and the online infrastructure will feature brand new netcode overseen by the Project Soul development team.]

Namco Bandai revealed Soulcalibur 2 HD Online at their San Diego Comic-Con panel today. It'll be out this fall for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and guest character Heihachi will still be featured at the very least. You can expect all of the original modes to return as well, plus the obvious inclusion of online multiplayer.

No word if Spawn will still be in the game, and we can pretty much count out Zelda's Link considering there was no Wii U version announced.

That's all we know for now, but will update you once Namco releases more info.

Sega 3D Classics confirmed for eShop in NA and Europe

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Those 3D Classics from Sega couldn't stay in Japan forever. The publisher's line of enhanced eShop titles has been confirmed for release in North America and Europe and will become available soon. Always with the "soon." Here's the lineup:

  • 3D Altered Beast
  • 3D Ecco the Dolphin
  • 3D Galaxy Force II
  • 3D Shinobi III
  • 3D Sonic The Hedgehog
  • 3D Space Harrier
  • 3D Streets of Rage

For as many ports of these as I own, screw it, what's the harm in one more purchase?

Pore over Shantae's original design sketches

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

The release of EarthBound on the Wii U unfortunately overshadowed the equally long-awaited arrival of WayForward's Game Boy Color gem Shantae on the 3DS. But I'm not about to sit by and allow our spunky little gal pal to be ignored a second time! This is your reminder to hop onto the eShop and spend that green!

Shantae is a landmark title for WayForward, as it was the company's first completely original property. Little do most people know, planning for the game actually began in the mid-90s when Erin Bozon, wife of WayForward creative director Matt Bozon, first designed the character. Matt ran with idea, and when development began, he was there in the office, drawing and coding almost everything entirely on his own. What a trooper!

Last week, Nintendo shared a few pages from Matt's sketchbook, which also include Erin's original illustrations. If you enjoy seeing where the magic began, give them a thorough once-over. And while you're at it, do remember to download the game as well. C'mon, guys!

Here's footage of the top eight Guilty Gear EVO tourney

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

While most of you were getting pretty crazy about the main tournaments featured at EVO, tons of side tournaments were going on in the background. One of them in particular that I think deserves a special mention is the Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus side tourney, featuring a ton of great players like Dogura and Domi, the Grand Finals combatants.

There's a decent amount of variety here, with characters of all shapes and sizes, including some of my personal favorites: Anji, Slayer, Robo-Ky, Dizzy, Potemkin, A.B.A., Faust, Millia, and Testament. You can watch the Grand Finals above, or head over to Jyosua's YouTube channel to watch the rest of the finals. Guilty Gear is an excellent franchise, and I can't wait for the new game to hit.

TowerFall ditches Ouya exclusivity with enhanced PC port

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 08:45 AM PDT

TowerFall is breaking free of its Ouya-exclusive shackles. The archery deathmatch game is on its way to PC, developer Matt Thorson has announced.

"Yes, I am working on TowerFall for PC. But it's going to take a couple months. There's going to be a ton of new content," Thorson broadcast via Twitter. He added the enhanced port will be priced somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 to $20.

The move isn't entirely unexpected. Thorson has voiced a desire to bring the title to a wider audience in the past. However, despite insisting the "Ouya version is doing great," the move follows reports of light hardware sales and desperate attempts to secure more exclusive content for the Android-based platform.

Mutant Mudds coming to PS3/PS Vita and more with Jools

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Last Sunday's Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) was another example of how quickly things can escalate with a returning guest. Though I've only spoken to Jools Watsham on a couple of occasions, it felt like settling in with an old friend from the moment Sinistar said "go."

Jools was kind enough to grant us with all kinds of exclusive information regarding both the business and development sides of Renegade Kid. We learned that Mutant Mudds sold best on 3DS, less well on iOS, and how the game changed the way Renegade Kid looked at the world of self-publishing. We also got deep into the psychology behind the upcoming Renegade Kid titles Cult County and Treasurenauts. The dark side of religion, the perks of multiplayer, the influence of Silent Hill 2, and ways to give the player a sense of constant discovery were just a few of the subjects on hand.

We also got into the dynamics of working on with various platforms and publishers. Jools was pretty clear that for both personal and professional reasons, working on Nintendo platforms means a lot to him, but that doesn't mean he's bound to them. Mutant Mudds is officially on its way to PS3 and PS Vita. It'll be one purchase for both consoles, with the potential for cross-play. Very exciting news for Sony console only owners out there who love a good platformer.

The we got exclusive word on some plans for Mutant Mudds 2 (bosses confirmed!), the secret back story of Granny (she's the Obi Wan Kenobi of the Mudds-verse) and so much other stuff. It's required listening for fans of any game that Jools has ever put out (especially Rod-Land). Thanks again to Jools for being such an amazing guest, and tune in this Sunday at 1:00pm Pacific / 4:00pm Eastern when we welcome Matt Thorson (Towerfall, Give Up Robot) to the program.

New Borderlands 2 DLC to be revealed tomorrow

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Remember that new Borderlands 2 DLC that's in the works? At least one of those projects will be revealed tomorrow, Randy Pitchford has announced. Details of the DLC are slim, as we don't know whether or not future content will consist of skins, characters, or new campaigns, but we do know that it will not be included in the initial Season Pass.

I think the game is pretty saturated both character- and skins-wise, so I'm hoping it's a new piece of content as imaginative as Assault on Dragon Keep. While the first few DLCs were interesting distractions, Dragon Keep really managed to forge its own identity, and feel like a true expansion. Otherwise, Gearbox should probably stop milking this cow and move on to another project.

Microsoft is giving away Xbox Ones at Comic-Con

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 07:30 AM PDT

This weekend, San Diego Comic-Con attendees have the opportunity to win an Xbox One. As down as some of us are on the system right now -- it's not exactly inexpensive, you know? -- there's no topping free.

If you're in town, simply bring your badge to the Manchester Room in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, which is where the Xbox Lounge has set up shop. A winner will be chosen at random at the end of each day, and you're allowed to enter the drawing once per day.

The lounge has games like Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, and Forza 5 should you actually want to drop in to get some hands-on time with the system.

Review: Dusty Revenge

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Beat 'em ups have a pretty interesting history. After dominating the arcade scene in the 80s and 90s, the gaming community at large eventually clamored for more transcendent experience than just mashing a few buttons over and over until their short journey was through. So the once simple genre started to get more technical and borrow concepts from other games, such as RPG-like leveling systems, multiple movesets per character, combos, juggles, and so on.

Dusty Revenge attempts to combine a lot of neat ideas, on top of a fairly solid foundation with mechanics that function similarly to a fighting game. It just needs a bit more polish.

The Mega Man and X anniversary statue is up for pre-order

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT

If you want that metallic Mega Man and X 25th Anniversary Statue, now is the time, since pre-orders have just opened up and production is limited to 1000 pieces worldwide. 100 bucks will net you an individually numbered statue set to commemorate Mega Man's 25th Anniversary, weighing in at six pounds of resin, and a 10-inch height.

You can nab this figure at both San Diego Comic-Con or online, so if you want it, go for it! Personally, I think I'll pass on this one, as I'm just not digging the design.

Steam sale: Skyrim, Monaco, Trials, Bully, Rayman Origins

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Rounding out the week of discounts, today's Steam sale lineup is rather excellent.

Daily deals:

  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ($35.99)
  • Civilization V ($7.49)
  • Awesomenauts ($3.39)
  • Train Simulator 2013 ($10.99)
  • EVE Online ($4.98)
  • GRID 2 ($29.99)
  • Trials Evolution: Gold Edition ($9.99)
  • Monaco ($7.44)
  • Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition ($4.99)
  • Metro: Last Light ($29.99)

Flash sales:

  • Bully: Scholarship Edition ($3.74)
  • Portal 2 ($4.99)
  • Star Trek ($7.49)
  • Fable III ($4.99)
  • Rayman Origins ($6.79)

At the risk of just re-writing half of those names out again, my recommendations are: Rayman Origins, Portal 2, Bully, Monaco, Civilization V, and Awesomenauts. All of these games together for under $35 -- what a ridiculous notion. If you aren't already training to wait for deals like these, it shouldn't take much more to get you to that point.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is getting new S.T.A.R. Labs DLC

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 05:30 AM PDT

It appears as if Injustice is getting more DLC in the form of new S.T.A.R. Labs missions, which are basically akin to a challenge mode. Specifically, on July 23, each new DLC character (Lobo, Batgirl, Scorpion and Zod) will get 10 new missions each to mess around with. If you're a Season Pass owner, the content is free, but if you're not, this costs $1.99.

I'm a big fan of challenges, since they're a great way to break up the action every 100-200 matches or so, and they can teach you new tactics you never would have tested otherwise.

Sonic games have to have a casino world, right? We got an early look at a newly revealed world in Sonic Lost World on the Wii U called Frozen Factory here at San Diego Comic-Con. Despite the name, it's a full-blown casino zone.

Remember Casino Night from Sonic 2? What a great stage (with great music), right? This one looks to be just as fun.

Valve releases Dota 2 for Linux and Mac

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 04:30 AM PDT

It's only been a short while after the admittedly long-in-the-making official release of Dota 2 for Windows and Valve has already prepared Mac and Linux versions of the immensely popular game. Those are available for download right now on Steam.

Mac minimum system requirements:

  • Mac OS X Lion 10.7
  • 4GB RAM
  • 8GB Hard drive space
  • nVidia 320M or higher, or Radeon 7000 or higher, or Intel HD 3000 or higher

Linux minimum system requirements:

  • Ubuntu 12.04
  • Dual core from Intel or AMD at 2.8 GHz
  • 4GB RAM
  • 8GB Hard Drive Space,
  • nVidia GeForce 8600/9600GT, ATI/AMD Radeaon HD2600/3600 (Graphic Drivers: nVidia 310, AMD 12.11), OpenGL 2.1
  • OpenAL Compatible Sound Card

New players are being let into Dota 2 gradually to avoid totally overloading the game's infrastructure, so if you're among the bright-eyed beginners who are in for a world of hurt, you'll first be added to Valve's launch queue before getting into the game proper.

South Park: The Stick of Truth inspired by EarthBound

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT

When asked what games inspired the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creative minds behind the iconic series, jokingly answered "Crash Bandicoot 2."

While the comment garnered an instant laugh and cheer from the crowd, when all things settled down the duo's actual answer provided a much deeper insight into the passion the two have for creating something that is more than another videogame slapped with the South Park label on it.

"We're big gamers and I think what was inspiring the game was a lot more lofty than what we could pull off," Parker said. "I was a big fan of it and what I kept thinking in my mind was EarthBound."

"I haven't played it [EarthBound] again in forever, but I just remember something being about 'Oh wow, I'm a little kid in a house and there's my mom and I go outside my house and am fighting like an ant and a little mouse.' It started out feeling so real," Parker added. "I kept having in my head 'do I really want [South Park: The Stick of Truth] to feel like that you are a little kid and you're playing this game and bigger shit ends up happening.' But I really loved that feeling that EarthBound had of I'm a cute little kid in my neighborhood and we're running around playing a game.'"

In addition to EarthBound, Parker and Stone also noted that The Legend of Zelda's silent protagonist Link and the 2D/3D visuals of Paper Mario were other big influences to the to the design of the game.

That's a whole lot of Nintendo love guiding the way for South Park: The Stick of Truth and three more reasons I'm looking forward to the upcoming RPG. Looks like I found another reason to download EarthBound when I get back from San Diego. Not that I really needed one.

Final Fantasy composer talks to us about upcoming e-book

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 03:30 AM PDT

We mentioned a few days ago that Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu was preparing an e-book titled Blik-0 with accompanying music. I was immediately curious to learn more, and fortunately Uematsu was on hand at San Diego Comic Con to discuss the upcoming project along with artist Hiroki Ogawa.

Fortunately you won't have to wait long to experience it for yourself, as the e-book and three-track album will hit digital retailers in August, but in the meantime, Uematsu and Ogawa were able to share a lot of details regarding how the project came about, some of the main themes the book explores, and how the music will interact with the story.

Check it out below, and let us know what you think of Uematsu branching out into new territory.

Gran Turismo 6: New courses raced at Comic-Con

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Aside from all of the shiny new PS4 stuff they're showing off, Sony also brought along Gran Turismo 6 to San Diego Comic-Con this week. They're showing some of the new tracks here on the show floor alongside the game's new physics and rendering engines.

All of this is being shown in some pretty slick GT6 race sleds in the PlayStation booth. The lines are long, but it's worth the wait to get into one of these sweet rigs, complete with GT Logitech wheels and pedals, HD display and stereo sound.

As for the new courses shown here, we've seen the Silverstone Circuit before. Today we also saw the mountainous (and very pretty) Matterhorn course. The Willow Springs International Motorsports Park is a desert raceway with big turns and plenty of places to spin out and totally invalidate your lap. The new GT6 rendering engine pumps out some nice visuals for all of these new courses, as each feature slick lighting and a high level of detail.

You can get a better look at these courses and that sweet 15th anniversary race rig they have here at SDCC in our gallery.

We played Lords of Shadow 2 on PC, plus new screens

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 02:30 AM PDT

Have I ever mentioned that I'm really looking forward to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2? It was my personal favorite game at E3 last month, but Konami gave us some hands-on time with the PC version here at San Diego Comic Con. We have to tell you... it looks and plays a lot like the console experience. This was probably reinforced by the fact that we played it with a console controller on the PC.

In other news, Konami has released a new batch of screenshots that are looking pretty tasty.

Check them out below and let us know if this one's doing anything for you yet. Will you be picking it up the console or PC?

Distant Worlds: Final Fantasy is a whole new concert

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 01:30 AM PDT

We've covered the Distant Worlds concert series extensively over the years, but after seeing last night's stop in San Diego for Comic Con, I think it's fair to say that this is an entirely new show with tons of new arrangements. You may want to reference our reviews of the Final Fantasy Orchestra Album and Distant Worlds: The Celebration Blu-ray releases to see where they're drawing the new pieces from, but here's your chance to hear them live.

Fans love anything that has to do with chocobos and Final Fantasy VII, and thankfully there's plenty of both to go around. The new chocobo medley includes an amazing "Pulse de Chocobo" from FFXIII, while there's a great battle medley featuring the FFVII battle theme, "Those who Fight." My personal favorites were "Battle with the Four Fiends" from FFIV, "Phantom Forest" from FFVI, and "Dalmascan Eastersand" from FFXII, although the new and revamped opera scene from FFVI, with added narration, was highly entertaining, even with the pauses made for the nearby fireworks extravaganza (thanks, Comic Con!).

Hit up a stop near you (they're taking this show across the globe now), and let us know what you think of the new arrangements.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn gets an Emmy nomination

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT

I don't care if you like Halo 4, or any game in the series for that matter. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn is far and away the best example of how to adapt a videogame franchise to a live-action setting. I watched it expecting little more than an hour and a half of marketing hype, and was treated to a well produced live-action videogame adaptation instead.

The Academy of Television Art & Sciences seems to recognize this in some capacity, nominating Forward Unto Dawn for an Emmy in Outstanding Main Title Design. Cynics may point out the relatively low esteem of the category, but it's a freakin' Emmy for a one-off web series, and is going up against HBO's Newsroom, FX's American Horror Story: Asylum, Starz' Da Vinci Demons, CBS' Elementary, and History Channel's Vikings.

Congrats to the folks at Machinima and 343.

Game Freak teases new collaborative mystery project

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 12:30 AM PDT

Pokemon developer Game Freak is teasing a new project, complete with a "coming soon" website and a mysterious figure. Judging from the creature-like silhouette it looks Pokemon related, and internet sleuths have translated the text as "the well known game, played all around the world, is about to be reborn thanks to a surprising collaboration."

To me, that indicates a joint development project that may or may not be a 3DS remake of a previous Pokemon game (next up is Sapphire and Ruby). Of course, it could also be another Pokemon x [insert franchise here] game, which is also likely given the collaboration aspect.

We'll know soon enough, but when Game Freak is involved, I'm always excited.

Buy an Xbox 360, get a free copy of Skyrim Legendary

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Are you in the market for an Xbox 360? Are you that one person that still hasn't played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? Well GameStop is going to help you correct that mistake, by offering a free copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition with every purchase of the recently release Xbox 360 250 GB E model. A disclaimer though, the E model does not support optical out or standard definition AV. Still, the complete edition of what is perhaps the best game of this generation is a pretty good giveaway.

The offer only runs until July 23, so get your orders in soon if you're interested. The offer is good in stores, and here on GameStop's website.

San Diego Comic-Con 2013: Day 1 in photos

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 09:54 PM PDT

I've been covering San Diego Comic-Con for years but I'm still not over how strange a place this is. As you look through our gallery remember that this is technically a slower day. Tomorrow and through the weekend will be much more crazy, and will bring more cosplayers and oddities to snap. Stay tuned for those.

For now, check out the sights in our gallery below. You'll find Luigi, lewd drawings, lewd books, corgis (kind of), doggies, and other weird things.

If there's something you want to see photographed, let us know.

Ryse gets comic that is about as interactive as the game

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Ryse, the Xbox One exclusive quick-time-event from Crytek (Crysis), has received a digital comic, Ryse: Sword of Damocles. You can read and vaguely interact with the first of three issues here. In it, Damocles is betrayed and killed in battle, so he comes back from the underworld to kill his corrupt generals that threaten Rome.

It's not even a spoiler; the comic's website lists that as the description. Ryse: Son of Rome for when you just want to mash buttons and still win when you mash the wrong buttons, Ryse: Sword of Damocles for when you want to read a comic but don't know if you can make it through all 33 pages (a chunk of which are Xbox One and Forza ads), so we might as well summarize the first issue in one sentence just in case the reader gets bored halfway through or can't finish it for some reason.

There's about as much substance here as there is in one frame of 300 and half the style, subsequently spread thin over a couple dozen pages of awkwardly interactive comic clearly designed for SmartGlass. Oh, and apparently the interactions yield collectibles for the main game that will allow for, "an early leg up in the multiplayer," because reasons.

Who decided interactive comics were a good idea? I had a Power Rangers book with a sound board attached and little icons sprinkled throughout the text prompting you to push the appropriate sounds and it was more engaging and interesting than clicking on this guy's horse to make it neigh. And at least then I could just mash the pig monster button ad nauseam and hear it stutter and snort, "I'm hungry" over and over while I imagined throwing spicy foot longs into its mouth until it exploded.

In Crawl, man is the greatest monster of all

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Have you ever been playing a game only to die repeatedly by way of some stupid, annoying trap and thought, "I'd like to be that trap and kill other people?" Well, you miserable sack of bibles, now you can.

Crawl is a four player dungeon crawler coming out this year, and by the (good) looks of it, Adventure Time's won't be the only dungeon I crawl this fall. The twist in Crawl is that your friends play as the assorted monsters and traps in the game. Your homies can play as sword-wielding skeletons, irritating flame traps, and giant tentacle monsters all with the intent of messing you up. When someone kills the hero player, they assume the role and the former hero gets to grief.

The two person team at newly formed Powerhoof has some character behind it, if that well done trailer wasn't evidence enough.

This is our take on the classic four-player gameplay of Gauntlet, mixed with a Japanese bullet-hell shooter… I guess if you imagined Super Bomberman had sex with The Legend of Zelda you’d have Crawl… and a mental image of some sort.

Sounds good to me. You? Oh, and make sure to peep the adorable Gabe Newell pixel art on their website. Would make for a great boss character.

Oh look! A new Ace Combat game for the PlayStation 3

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 07:15 PM PDT

Ace Combat: Infinity has just been announced. The teaser trailer doesn't really reveal much other than some lady humming like crazy. Calm down, lady. I'm PRETTY sure we can expect jets fighting in the skies and stuff. Oh, and it's only been announced for the PlayStation 3. We'll tell you more about the new title once we know ourselves.

The last Ace Combat game, Assault Horizon, was pretty alright.

Time keeps on slipping in Lightning Returns: FFXIII

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

I'm really rather stoked for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in spite of myself. And it's not the flagrant appeal to nostalgia with the Cloud Strife outfit and buster sword DLC, promise. Actually, Lightning's new default costume marks some of the better character design in the Final Fantasy XIII sub-series, ostentatious as it is. Still, there's going to be some conflict within me over whether to rock it, the SOLDIER uniform, or some other duds, like the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Miqo’te outfit from this trailer.

Now I'm remembering how much time I spent in Resonance of Fate at the clothing shop. Or all of Persona 3 and Persona 4's cool outfits (like the main character's Dojima garb in P4!). Our own Joseph Leray can explain to you why Final Fantasy X-2 is good.

Clothing aside, this was a damn good trailer. Relatively subdued, as far as Final Fantasy trailers go. Easy on the bombast. You've the pitter patter of scared footsteps from guards. When a big monster does show up, the background music dies down so you can appreciate its heft and menace. The music is also strangely akin to Western dramas and thrillers before the last third's montage kicks up. Plus there were Max Payne 3/Papo & Yo favelas. Good show.

Beyond that, the PlayStation Blog has some gameplay details. Some foes can be disabled piecemeal and your loot drop can change depending on which sections you destroy, and there is also a manual counter attack mechanic. The counter, only effective against physical attacks, uses up a chunk of the ATB, which is cool. Using it badly could be disastrous, but using it successfully could be a game changer. I'm down with more chances for engagement. Nailing R1 to critical hit in Final Fantasy VIII was fun. What do you guys think?

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sales surpass 500,000 units

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Good news, everybody! Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold more than 505,000 combined physical and digital units. More than 20% of the total sales came from the digital sales, in fact. Nintendo says that internal sales trackers show the game is going to have a strong July as well, thus poising New Leaf to be one of the biggest games of the summer.

More good news! The 3DS sold nearly 225,000 units in June, making it the best-selling videogame system in the United States for the second consecutive month in a row. Additionally, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D sold another 108,000 units. Plus, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon moved an additional 115,000 units all last month, bringing lifetime sales total to more than 750,000 units.

All the crap you'll get with Watch Dog's Limited Edition

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Another Ubisoft game, another limited edition with a bunch of stuff you won't care about like a year after you've gotten it. In this case it's the North American Limited Edition for Watch Dogs, which includes the soundtrack, a 9" figure of Aiden Pearce, his mask, a steelbook, and art book.

All that can be yours for $130, and this will also be available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. And just like with Assassin's Creed IV, there is no planned Wii U version of the Limited Edition. Hey, just be happy you're getting the base game at all, Wii U owners.
