WildStar gives a briefing on Deradune, land of the Great Hunt
Deradune is a zone that's been one of WildStar's most-viewed zones during Carbine's press viewings (heck, we've seen it enough to call it a second home by now!). Today's WildStar Wednesday gives more attention to the area by focusing on the story, key players, and descriptive landmarks that players will encounter.

While striking many as reminiscent of World of Warcraft's Barrens, WildStar's Deradune sets itself apart by populating the region with tribes focused on hunting. Er, hm. Anyway, players will embark upon a "Great Hunt" if they want to join the Drakens of Bloodfire Clan, and oh boy do you want to be a part of this exclusive club! The article references a terrifying creature known as Metal Maw, which may be the end goal of the hunt.

At 8:00 a.m. EDT, servers will go down for a scheduled three-hour maintenance, at which time Issue #6 The Last Train to Cairo will be patched in. Once the content is live, players will be able to add a whip to their weapon collection, dive into the new PvP ranking system, and revel in all the other assorted goodies coming their way.

Aphrodite joins the SMITE fight crew

Aphrodite joins the SMITE fight crew
If any character ever had a good reason to wear the skimpiest armor ever, Aphrodite would have full license to strut. Hi-Rez revealed the revealing goddess of beauty in its newest SMITE update.

Aphrodite utilizes her feminine wiles to win over the competition as a support character tied to a "soul mate." Her hugs give mana to a soul mate and her kisses do double duty as buffs and stuns. No, really. That said, if things get too hot and heavy, she can use her Back Off! skill to knock enemies back. She can also call down doves for both healing and damage because apparently doves are the combat medics of the avian world.

Check out Aphrodite's trailer after the jump before catching up on SMITE's latest patch notes!

[Thanks to Don for the tip!]

F2P doubles TERA playerbase
While some like to say that switching to free-to-play is the death knell for a game, the opposite sure looks to be true for TERA. Whether it is because of the lure of the action combat model, the graphics, the fact that no content is locked behind a payment gate, or something else entirely, folks have flocked to the fantasy game since it went F2P a month ago. In fact, TERA's playerbase has swelled by over 500,000, doubling the number of registered users to over one million and causing Gameforge to open up six new servers in order to meet the demand.

Will the momentum hold? Only time will tell. But for now, F2P is definitely suiting TERA. For more on the free-to-play conversion, read Massively's exclusive interview with Associate Producer Patrick Sun.

Two guns - One for each of you
Has Star Wars: The Old Republic's grind got you down? Well, chin up, young padawan, because BioWare has just announced the game's first ever double XP promotion. Beginning on March 15th, players will receive bonus experience every weekend through April 8th.

Is BioWare hoping to get a few more characters to level 50 prior to its Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion? Probably, but the company has yet to officially announce the release date other than "Spring 2013." The firm also notes that even if you're already level 50, you can still take advantage of the bonus weekends via doubled Legacy experience.

Choose My Adventure: My first tour of duty in Star Trek Online

Being an ensign specializing in tactical operations is normally not a long-term career path.
Acting captain's log, Stardate 86196.3. This marks my first entry as captain of the USS Zhuang Zhou and also the first entry into my log since Starfleet formally insisted that I stop beginning log entries with "dear diary." My protests regarding this policy have been documented elsewhere.

During a mission of mercy, the Zhuang Zhou was forced to enter a combat situation against the Borg, which killed the majority of the command staff. As the highest-ranking officer on board, I assumed command and aided other Starfleet vessels in the vicinity in an effort to repel the threat. Now, I will be granted command of the Zhuang Zhou on a provisional basis after she is retrofitted and repaired.

Successfully undertaking a few more missions at the behest of Starfleet Command will most likely be enough to earn me a full command of a light ship. As the Zhuang Zhou is an aging Miranda-class vessel with a dearth of useful functions, the likelihood of her surviving any further combat engagements is slim to none. My protests regarding this state of affairs have also been documented elsewhere.

      Defiance - Frontier town concept
If you're looking to get some play time in the Defiance beta, you'd best get a move on. Trion has announced that the final beta weekend for its sci-fi shooter MMO will run from March 22nd through March 24th.

The company is inviting Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users along for the ride, and it is also doing away with Defiance's NDA. Trion's press release says that more specific beta details will be forthcoming in the invites slated to go out over the next few days.

The final beta "will let players explore the Mt. Tam and Madera regions with co-op battles on Angel Island and the Cronkhite Bunker," Trion says. "For Ark Hunters looking to test their might in some competitive multiplayer action, the Freight yard and Observatory will provide opportunities to prove themselves worthy of Von Bach Industries' recruitment."

Defiance launches on PC and console platforms on April 2nd.

Latest dev blog delves into the depths of The Secret World endgame

Latest dev blog delves into the depths of The Secret World
If your Secret World adventures have thus far only entailed playing through the main story line, according to the latest dev blog you are missing out! The post plumbs the depths of TSW's character development and progression system (the endgame, if you will), detailing what lies in store for players after they turn that last page in the story.

With such a variety of situations and so many different builds to tackle them with, mastering TSW is a very lengthy process. Part of that process entails honing skills and collecting gear by moving to successively harder dungeons. Beyond just acquiring gear, players must also augment their arsenal with crafted kickbacks, stimulants, and pure anima potions. Then there is obtaining glyphs and knowing which one to use when for the best effect. And don't forget about getting ahold of powerful signets that can be added to weapons and talismans.

Of course, with the game's flexibility, there's no one "right way" to do things, so there are plenty of ways to experiment. Want some hints to use on this path to mastery? Check out all the details in the full post.

SOE outlines DC Universe Online PvP roadmap

          DC Universe Online Controller
SOE just released GU24 and Mister Mxyzptlk onto DC Universe Online's live servers, but the firm is already looking ahead to future 2013 patches. First up is the PvE-focused Origin Crisis DLC, and after that we should see some additional PvP changes.

As such, Creative Director Jens Andersen posted a PvP roadmap yesterday that features tidbits about gear progression changes, arranged matchmaking, and some sort of map scheduler. The gear changes look to have quite an impact on how PvP works in DCUO, since SOE is breaking them down into seasons that will introduce new tiers of equipment over time.

          EVE's EON magazine closing down

EON Issue #2 coverMeatspace magazines devoted to MMORPGs are a rare breed, and they'll be rarer still after EVE Online's EON mag closes its doors this month.

MMM Publishing sent out an email blast informing subscribers and former customers of the decision, saying that "the economic realities are such that it is no longer viable to continue to produce the magazine in spite of EVE enjoying record success in its 10th year of operation."

The company will keep the lights on through March 31st to process outstanding orders and clear out its remaining stock. If you're an EVE fan and you need a few back issues to complete your collection (or you just want to see Massively columnist Brendan Drain's 2005-era tanking guide in print), head over to the EON website and get them while they last.

          RIFT - Boss battle party
Trion Senior Design Director Simon Ffinch recently gave an interview at OnRPG.com concerning the future of RIFT. As you're probably aware, the fantasy title just celebrated its second anniversary, and Ffinch was asked about the firm's big plans for 2013 and beyond.

"We do have updates planned out for RIFT well into next year with some really exciting and much requested things for the players to experience," Ffinch said. "We will be expanding on all the features we have in the game right now and exploring a host of new ones."

Ffinch also hinted at some extra-Teleran adventures. "Telara itself will actually enjoy a period of peace and tranquility, but the Ascended will be needed more than ever... uh... elsewhere, to make sure it remains this way. I will just leave it at that," he teased.

The Daily Grind: What fantasy trope should be retired from MMOs?

The Daily Grind What fantasy trope should be retired from MMOs
Tropes: MMOs are chock-full of them. From pirates running rampant in every fantasy setting to the "save the world from cranky dragons" narrative, it seems like developers go to the same well for inspiration more often than not. Sometimes that's OK, because we do like the familiar and to see if these game creators can do something unique with them. But sometimes enough is enough.

So what fantasy trope should be retired from MMOs? My vote is and always has been for giant spiders. It's not that I'm creeped out by them or anything, it's just that I'm so very, very tired of seeing them in every game. Not only are they physically impossible, but it seems like a cheap method to try to induce a bit of squirmy apprehension instead of actually working for it. Yes, your game has big spiders. Congrats. You're as special as white bread.

What say you? What trope would you like to see banished, never to return?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!
