The Game Archaeologist Rubies of Eventide
I can't say that Rubies of Eventide has been on my radar, like, ever. And yet practically every time I've asked for suggestions of a game to cover in this column, it seems like someone pipes up asking that Rubies gets a little publicity. That tells me that there's some underground love for this title.

There are two things that separate Rubies of Eventide from the rest of the MMO pack and make it a fascinating case study. The first is that it's one of the very few MUDs that was transformed into a graphical MMO while retaining its roots in old-school play. The second is that it had an absolutely ridiculous number of playable classes: 104, to be precise. Some days I really miss the era when game designers would aspire to reach these incredible numbers.

Faced with the prospect of an early death, Rubies of Eventide miraculously survived and ran for six interesting years. Let's take a look at a MUD-turned-MMO this week, shall we?

WRUP: Things I am no longer allowed to do in work chat edition

    Posted: 09 Feb 2013 07:00 AM PST

I am absolutely not allowed to talk about Transformers. Because it would never stop. Shattered Glass is right off the table.
I consider myself to be a professional worker as long as I'm not around my co-workers. As a result, there are certain things that I am no longer allowed to do in the Massively work chat. For example, I am not allowed to make a horrible pun and then immediately play a sound effect from Won't Get Fooled Again. I am not allowed to change the room's title to "Flapjack And His Orchestra." I am not allowed to speak in all caps while talking like what people in 2010 thought street pimps from 1992 sounded like.

I am also not allowed to post pictures of my cat attacking My Little Pony figures, make references to Mr. Show, or insist that I be addressed as the master of cheese wheels. A new ban has been added to prevent me from discussing cabinet-making in an obscene manner, but that was really only half my fault.

What I am allowed to do is introduce WRUP, which I'm doing right now. Check out our plans past the break, and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments!

The Daily Grind: How many MMOs are you willing to play at the same time?

      Posted: 09 Feb 2013 05:00 AM PST

I would be playing it right now if it were possible.
Working for Massively is not good if you want to avoid hearing about new and interesting games. During my first year on the job, I would pile MMOs on my plate left and right as I heard something about one title or another. At this point, I've reached an acceptance that I can really play about three games with any consistency, so when another game gets added to the mix, one has to fall off. That means that WildStar is going to be kicking some other game in my rotation to the curb when it finally comes out.

Some people would rather be serial monogamists with games, playing only one game for a few months, then another one game for a few more months, and so forth. Others take advantage of the widespread free-to-play model to play all the games in short bursts. Today we want to know where you draw the line. How many MMOs are you willing to play at the same time? Even if you dip into other titles occasionally, how many games do you consider yourself to be actively playing at once?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

        Betawatch: February 2 - 8, 2013

Just once I'd like to see a dragon that's glowing pink.
The Massively offices are abuzz over the Neverwinter beta running this weekend, from the new trailer to character creation to the Cloak Tower. There's also been a lot of discussion about thigh sliders, which at first sounded like sliders made from delectable chicken thigh meat, but it turns out that wasn't the case.

Beyond Neverwinter the beta front has been largely quiet, but the long-silent Legend of Edda is back in town and will kick off a closed beta weekend starting on February 14th next week. City of Steam also offered prospective players a bit of lore on the game's most immediately visible robot, which is a meaningful distinction in that game. And Defiance is running another beta weekend if you're in the mood for some running and gunning.

As always, you can jump past the break for the full list of games in testing. If you see something that we've missed, let us know in the comments down below. Also let us know if a game has slipped into offering a full cash shop despite being in beta or if you've actually heard anything about those thigh sliders.

Storyboard: Profession discussion - the Spy

Oddly, none of these people are spies. Even though one of them traditionally is.
Long-time readers will remember that back around the end of this column's first year, I wrote a series of columns about character archetypes. It was a series I'm quite proud of as a whole, and one that I've wanted to follow up for a while, but I had to wait until I had an idea that fit. That was when I started thinking about how that series talked entirely about who a character is rather than what he or she actually does. In reality, the two can be miles apart.

Take my first choice of profession, the spy. A spy might believe that she's doing something for the greater good. She might see this simply as part of her duty and a necessary task. She might be doing this because she's fundamentally amoral, she might be hoping to find the answer to a puzzle she's long agonized about, or she might even be doing this because she just really wants to know secrets. But today I'm not going to talk about that. You want to make a spy; let's talk about what goes into that.

            Second Wind: RIFT's Storm Legion

            Screenshot -- RIFT
Trion Worlds' RIFT is still a relative newcomer to the MMO space, released a mere two years ago in March 2011, but in that time it's made quite a name for itself as one of the premier AAA titles on the market today. Since the game's release, Trion has built a reputation for putting out frequent, quality updates, and in the time since launch, RIFT has continued to grow with the addition of new features and content.

Last November, Trion released Storm Legion, the game's first expansion pack, which bumped the level cap up to 60, tripled the size of the in-game world, and brought player housing to the masses in the form of dimensions. For my part, I used to be an avid RIFT player, but despite the game's unique soul system, there just wasn't enough to differentiate itself from the myriad other similar MMOs on the market, and I never managed to make it to max-level before I let my subscription lapse out of boredom. So for this edition of Second Wind, I picked myself up a copy of Storm Legion and jumped back into the world of Telara once again to see just how far it has come.

Face of Mankind gets a revamp in the upcoming Milestone patch

Face of Mankind gets a revamp in the upcoming Milestone patch
The free-to-play MMOFPS Face of Mankind is due for a major update soon. A new dev blog has been put out in order to explain some of the changes that will be coming about in the patch.

The mining and crafting systems are getting an overhaul: Resources will be collected, transported, and refined into useful materials in new ways. Augmenting that will be a reformed death and cloning system. Players will drop all non-bound items in their inventory on death, and the process of creating a new clone to get back into action with will be lengthier (although it can, of course, be sped up for a cost.) Players will now be able to create and manage their own factions, rather than sticking with the eight factions that were previously in the game.

There's more! There's so, so much more (including "stuff with aliens"). Keep an eye out for a Kickstarter campaign to fund new improvements and systems for the game.

Skip below the cut to catch the full details.

[Thanks to intrepid explorer Alex for the tip!]

              Neverwinter unveils the Devoted Cleric

              Sickness and health, I guess.
There's a lot of devotion running around in Neverwinter, and usually it's not something to be fond of. Most of the game features a plethora of foes devoted to the idea of ripping your character limb from limb, for example. But devotion isn't all bad. Take the newest class for the game, the Devoted Cleric, a beacon of healing light that will hinder foes, help allies, and always remain faithful to you even if you wear that hat he absolutely hates.

Devoted Clerics have two at-will abilities under normal circumstances: a standard attack and a lighter attack that also heals allies for a small amount. As the Devoted Cleric attacks, he builds up Divinity, which allows him to shift into different at-will abilities -- a channeled beam of damage or a channeled heal that restores both the target and the cleric. Take a closer look at the class mechanics on the official site, or see the class in action in the trailer past the cut.

Ultima Forever wants you to learn about yourself

Ultima Forever wants you to learn about yourself
Mythic Lead Designer Kate Flack has an interesting interview up on Gamasutra about her experiences with developing MUDs and how she's rejecting the industry standard when it comes to crafting Ultima Forever (legal disclaimer: This online multiplayer title is not an MMO, but hey, it's online Ultima so shh.).

Flack says that because most MMOs are based on a DikuMUD standard, they all more or less play the same. She says that there's a freedom to starting from a different standard and developing from there: "It's a way of playing that doesn't necessarily have the same assumptions underlying them. It gives you a breadth of background and heritage that you can pull from. Just because it's always been done that way doesn't mean I have to do it the same way."

Part of this design shift is in asking "sophisticated questions about ethics" to players, which is a vital part of the Ultima franchise. Flack says that Ultima Forever will be more nuanced and involve tough choices that will make a personal impact on gamers: "I want to make you stop, think, and go, 'Huh!' and then learn about yourself, because games can do that."

Allods Online shows off the zones of its upcoming expansion

              I'm on a bird!
Allods Online is gearing up for another new expansion, Lords of Destiny. Of course, a new expansion means new areas to explore, filled with exciting new animals to kill for loot. So it's not surprising that the first official preview shows off the allod of Irdrih. Players will be sent there on a top-secret mission from their faction leaders, but when they arrive, they'll be walking right into a war between two native factions that will force them to pick a side.

So what else will you find? A jungle, lots of smaller islands, and a lot of lush tropical scenery. You'll also wind up meeting the Tequani, small furry humanoids that are distant relatives of the Gibberlings (one of the player races). The new region is hardly the only feature of the expansion, but if you want to take a look at the scenery and read up on the local lore, you can check out the full reveal.

EVE Fanfest has totally sold out

It used to be about the music. And backstabbing and corporate nastiness. So not much has changed.
The EVE Online gathering of fans has totally sold out, man. It's completely sold out... of tickets. Yes, this year's EVE Fanfest has already reached full capacity, with the final ticket being sold today. That means that if you were hoping to somehow make your way out to Iceland for the gathering... well, you still can go to Iceland, but you won't be getting into CCP's convention.

This year's fanfest will be bigger than previous years as it includes both EVE Online and DUST 514 under its header. It's also the 10th anniversary of EVE Online, so there are sure to be all sorts of interesting events for attendees. If you already have your ticket, you can look forward to it, but if you missed it, your only chance now is to hope to catch some online coverage. On the brighter side, if you had already booked a flight and/or lodgings before tickets had sold out and you are now out of luck, you can contact CCP Games to help recover your investment.

City State talks Camelot Unchained skills, progression, and more

Camelot Unchained emblemReady for round two of the foundational principles behind Mark Jacobs' Camelot Unchained? Good, because City State is back with an RvR-centric blog entry designed to whet your appetite for the upcoming PvP title.

The piece starts off with an example of how crafters will serve an important purpose in the game's "TriRealm" dynamic. "As an RvR-focused game, hummingbirds won't be dropping rare and unique items; well, unless you consider bird poop rare and unique," the dev blog explains. "You will get rewards for killing other players, other players' helpers, and some stuff in the world, but it won't be gear and we will also not offer tokens."

Skill progression is also on today's menu, and City State says that Camelot Unchained will reward you based "on the activities that you are participating in directly." The dev blog also hints at "you are what you do" gameplay and says that the team favors classes for this particular MMO.

There's a lot more to today's post, including bits about zerging, crowd-control, housing, and crafting, so head to the City State site for all the details.
