Mega64's hands out awards for only the best of 2012 Posted: 31 Dec 2012 02:00 PM PST
My final post of 2012 is a Mega64 video share. I'M LAZY LOL! Maybe my resolution should be to do some real editorial work in 2013, am I right, haters!? Mega64 runs an awards show every year, and the results are always predictably unpredictable. The boys do their damnedest to evaluate only the best and brightest of 2012, so I'm sure you shouldn't find too much to complain about here. Hey! Even Tokyo Jungle got a major award! |
Mario Warfare episode 2 released, more on the way Posted: 31 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST
Here comes the second episode of Beat Down Boogie's Mario Warfare, just in time for year's end! The Brothers Mario finally take center stage, and classy hammer shots to the nuts ensue. To clarify, despite what some people might believe, this isn't a crossover with Modern Warfare. Not unless Activision has a monopoly on guns and pew pew pew. This would have been the final episode of the series, as the crew ran out of their personal funds because they had to scrap a bunch of already filmed footage. I say "would have," but since they already made their Kickstarter goal, a full season has been ensured. There are nine days left until donations close, so you could always chip in some more if you wanted. MARIO WARFARE - Part 2 [YouTube] |
Horror game Home to target Mac and iOS in 2013 Posted: 31 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST
Independent horror game Home seems to have done well for itself on PC, reaching an audience of 100,000 players and counting, according to designer Benjamin Rivers. While now is a terrific time to try the title -- it's a mere $1.49 on Steam -- there are plans for release on additional platforms. Which ones, exactly, will be up to folks like you. Rivers is looking into iOS and Mac, but has also listed Android as a possibility. He's currently gauging interest on this website for those who are willing to share their email address (so they'll "be the first to know"). Lastly, Home for Windows is getting some free content in the form of another in-game area "plus other fun things for eagle-eyed fans." |
Mega fan recreates every Mega Man Robot Master with clay Posted: 31 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST
After working on the project for a number of years, Rockman Corner reader "Ricardo" has finally finished working on his clay miniature figure line, featuring every single Robot Master ever from Mega Man 1-10. I'm currently replaying every Mega Man game ever made now, and as hard I as tried, I couldn't find anyone missing (if you don't count Rockman and Forte, the Game Boy's Mega Man Killers, or Mega Man V's Stardroids, and just go on the proper numbered games). Personally, Pharaoh Man is my favorite Robot Master in general, followed by Sword Man, and I think they were both faithfully recreated here. If you have a favorite, sound off below! If you're asking, "where's the X series?" Those aren't Robot Masters -- they're Mavericks. Megaman! [Flickr, via Rockman Corner] |

These discounts will continue through January 7, 2013. |

The Halo 4 Mythbusters video series has some neat tips Posted: 31 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST
Halo 4 has been out for nearly two months now, which means people have had a sufficient amount of time to f*ck with it. As the community suggests more and more crazy things to mess around with, the folks at Defend the House have been chronicling them in the form of a Mythbusters-style video series. The series in general reminds me of the early days of YouTube, where my friends and I would share Halo 2 super-jump videos. Episode 4, which was just released yesterday, goes on to confirm or deny such myths as "continuing a killstreak after death," "sword lunging through teleporters," or the fact that an actual grenade impact can kill you (the grenade itself, not the blast!). My favorite one so far is probably the "multiple sticky detonators myth" in Episode 3. If you're itching to get back into Halo, the Crimson Map Pack just dropped, and two more map packs are still on the way. |

When just about every major publisher rolled out a game featuring bows at E3 earlier this year, the fad didn't go unnoticed. Many were quick to comment on how in vogue arrow-slinging weaponry has become and for good reason. There's been another prevalent trend in gaming this year, but it's probably flown under most people's radars. Wingsuits. About a half dozen games this year featured special jumpsuits that allow people to glide through the air like a bird or, more appropriately, a flying squirrel. As the sun sets on 2012, join us in recounting our experiences with the latest craze to descend upon gaming. Wingsuits are a pretty scary prospect in real life. Jumping off daring heights, gliding off into the wind is enough, but to look ridiculous doing it? It's a bit too much for me. Thankfully, Michael Rooker and his squad did it for me in Black Ops II -- all I had to do was press a few buttons. Although the wingsuits aren't really featured for more than a few minutes of the game, their addition added some excitement to the beginning of the campaign, and really drove home how diverse the gear and weaponry really is in 2025. Like the Tenchu series, Mark of the Ninja has a number of items that may not be very ninja-y (strictly speaking), but provide a ton of fun for anyone who wants to utilize them. One of those items is the wingsuit, which lets you stalk your enemies with great care in the air. While a ninja game is probably the last game I'd expect to see a flying squirrel homage in, Mark of the Ninja is one of the many wingsuit-filled games of 2012. While at first I lamented the lack of Cape Mario or the Tanooki Suit, I learned to love the Flying Squirrel Suit in New Super Mario Bros. U. Once you realized the nuanced play of clinging to walls, and bouncing off enemy heads to keep your glide going, things get really technical, and incredibly fun. I didn't truly learn to appreciate the Flying Squirrel Suit until I tackled the game's challenge modes, where I quickly had to acclimate myself to not overdoing it, and utilizing all of the enemies I could to keep my flight combo going. Although it isn't the best new addition to the Mario franchise, I really enjoyed my time with it this year. I thought Far Cry 2 was near perfect, but Ubisoft Montreal really strove to take everything up to eleven with the sequel. There are several additions and improvements that make the already winning formula even more enjoyable, but few manage to be more exhilarating than soaring over Far Cry 3's war-torn jungles in a wingsuit. When Jason Brody's journey into this insane new world calls for him to head to a new island, he acquires this equipment to help him drop unseen behind enemy lines. After that memorable covert landing, the wingsuit can be used freely for a limitless number of exhilarating flights. And whether our intrepid protagonist is using it to sneak up on enemies or just indulging in a joyride, one thing is for sure: using Far Cry 3's wingsuit always makes for a good time. Okay, so this one's not exactly a wingsuit per se, but it's close enough in our book. Journey's magical scarf does just about everything you'd expect a wingsuit to do and the flapping cloak doesn't look too far off the mark, either. Gliding plays an integral role in traversing Journey's glittering desert landscapes and also makes for some of the title's more memorable and cinematic moments. In SSX, there are nine deadly descents that correspond to different environmental hazards that exist around the globe. There's a variety of specialist gear to help conquer these potential threats, but of them all the wingsuit is, far and away, my favorite. On certain slopes, there are large drops and wide gaps that make having a wingsuit an absolute necessity if you're looking to survive the run. However, given the choice I still take a wingsuit with me just about every time. While it might seem unintuitive, despite the webbing reducing speed, the enhanced level of control it offers in the air can help shave off precious seconds in a race. That and, like the rest of these games, it's also just a lot of fun to use in general. |

Jimquisition: Epic Hole (B Mine Cliffy) Posted: 31 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST
Over a year ago, Cliff Bleszinski (then of Epic Games) and myself had a public falling out and have never traded a word since. Ever a man of peace and goodwill, I hereby extend the olive branch the only way I know how -- with a little help from The Escapist's very own Miracle of Sound. |
Journey Collectors Edition minigames to be PSN downloads Posted: 31 Dec 2012 06:00 AM PST
Siliconera spotted listings and ratings for Duke War and Grave Diggers on PEGI's ratings board. These are names some might know from the recently released Journey: Collector's Edition, a title we saw this fall, but Europe missed. These 24hr Game Jam minigames created by thatgamecompany aren't the biggest deal, but it's a shame that European fans missed them. From the looks of this, Sony Europe might be selling at least these two bonus games separately. I suppose that would be nice of them. No word on Nostril Shot. |
Fez will be ported to other platforms, says Polytron Posted: 31 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST
Were you starting to get worried that Fez wouldn't appear on platforms other than Xbox Live Arcade? Despite knowing that Polytron is a small operation, I was. In a reflective post by Phil Fish which teases what might be next for his studio, the designer drops the news that, yes, the game "will finally be ported to other platforms." According to Fish, "[Fez] didn't break any records, but it made more than enough to let me keep doing what I do. So I'm afraid you're stuck with me for a little while longer." "We also have some exciting plans for the soundtrack, and something about a US branch? Beyond that however, the future is uncertain for Polytron. It's just me now," Fish writes. "I could do anything with this company, but I don't know what yet. There's a couple of new games in the pipeline, of course. But there's also an ambition to do so much more. I want to design everything! Maybe not a videogame? Maybe something else entirely. I JUST DON'T KNOW. And that's exciting! I hope you're excited too!" |
