The Nexus Telegraph: Who's afraid of the WildStar Dominion? Posted: 31 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Lore, Opinion, WildStar, The Nexus Telegraph From where we are now, it's hard to see a whole lot of good about the Dominion. Everything we've heard about WildStar's other faction thus far has been that it's made up of pure evil, absolutely the antithesis of everything you would ever want to stand for. These are not good people, to the best of our knowledge, and it comes as a bit of a surprise that they make up a playable faction in the game rather than a helpful organization of mooks in need of a good face-punching.Those familiar with my past work will know that I love rooting for the team that looks like the transparent bad guys. Unfortunately, right now we plain don't know enough about the Dominion to be sure of exactly what its deal is. Could be that it's as evil as it looks; could be that we only have half of the picture. So I'm going to go ahead and look at both possibilities. Continue reading The Nexus Telegraph: Who's afraid of the WildStar Dominion? Perpetuum coming to Steam, extensive PvE and world updates planned Posted: 31 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Game mechanics, MMO industry, PvP, News items, PvE, Perpetuum, Sandbox, Dungeons Avatar Creations has updated its Perpetuum dev blog with a lengthy end-of-the-year read that touches on a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff as well as the future of the sci-fi sandbox. First up is the title's debut on Steam, the preparations for which have been occupying the team as it gets the game ready to release to "such a broad audience."Along those lines, the devs are looking at amping up the game's PvE content, but as Avatar is still a small company, it's taking a bit longer than everyone would like. The good news, though, is that a lot of work has gone into revamping world content, the research system, and a new assignment system. Avatar has also been working on instanced content, and it will deploy the technology to improve the new-player tutorial experience as well as add small dungeons, PvP arenas, and events. Avatar acknowledges that some players may raise "torches and pitchforks and yell that instances have no place in an open sandbox world," but the dev blog explains both the benefits and the thought process behind them. Check it all out at the official Perpetuum site. Perpetuum coming to Steam, extensive PvE and world updates planned originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 31 Dec 2012 11:00:00 EST. The Daily Grind: What makes an MMO a sandbox? EVE Evolved: Fitting Amarr cruisers for PvP in Retribution Posted: 30 Dec 2012 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Game mechanics, PvP, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Guides, Sandbox EVE Online's recent Retribution expansion overhauled many of the game's old PvP mechanics and rebalanced all of the tech 1 frigates and cruisers. These are the first ships new players get into when they start playing, and many found they just couldn't compete with more expensive ships in combat. In Retribution, the basic tech 1 cruisers have been buffed beyond all recognition and now stand a serious chance against battlecruisers and tech 2 ships. New players and veterans alike have found the updated tech 1 cruisers to be a lot more fun to fly and more effective in solo PvP and small fleet warfare. Two weeks ago, I started a new series of ship fitting guides with effective PvP setups for each of the four Gallente tech 1 cruisers. In between hilarious sessions of baiting gankers with my ECM Vexor, I've recently been been getting to grips with the updated Amarr cruisers. The Omen is now a fast tackler that can project damage over 25km, the Maller is a fantastic support DPS platform for fleet warfare, and the Arbitrator has become a great anti-frigate platform. Even the humble Augoror should now be a welcome sight in PvP fleets, repairing almost as much as a Guardian at only a fraction of the cost. In this week's EVE Evolved, I give new PvP ship setups for EVE's recently buffed Amarr tech 1 cruisers. Fan posts new ArcheAge housing how-to [Updated] Posted: 30 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Housing An ArcheAge fan named LlexX has demystified some of the mechanics surrounding the game's extensive housing system. The fantasy sandbox features open world buildings as opposed to the instances commonly found in many MMORPGs. In order to keep potential suburban sprawl in check, there are housing taxes as well as the potential for dwellings to be destroyed if they're built on ArcheAge's PvP continent. The loss of a house isn't as dire as it sounds, though, since an affected player will receive the house and items in the mail and will need to simply find a new building plot. LlexX has outlined a basic building guide as well as posted a number of videos. Check out a decorating clip after the cut. [Update: ArcheAge Online's sleuthing has also revealed that the game might have secured a Russian publisher.] Continue reading Fan posts new ArcheAge housing how-to [Updated] Fan posts new ArcheAge housing how-to [Updated] originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 30 Dec 2012 15:00:00 EST. Korean analysts predict Guild Wars 2 expansion in 2013 Posted: 30 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, MMO industry, News items, Guild Wars 2 Considering that Guild Wars 2 runs on a similar business model to the original Guild Wars, we suspect it's inevitable that an expansion is in the cards. But when? According to Korean securities firm KDB Daewoo, it seems likely that one will launch within the next year, a tidbit the analysts slipped into a recent report regarding NCsoft's performance for the most recent financial quarter. The firm notes that Q4 was an excellent quarter for the company, with a big upswing in operational profits mostly credited to Guild Wars 2. The firm goes on to predict that the market in North America and Europe will be the most lucrative for the company, and based on a recent visit to NCsoft's headquarters, the analysts believe there are signs that the game may be due for its first expansion before too long. It's not an official update from ArenaNet, but fans of the game can feel free to start speculating on what the new year will bring.
