According to the game's site, Power Rangers Online is currently hosting an open beta event in Asia until January 2nd.Unfortunately, it's a little difficult to translate the page for more details, as it's one large graphic. Still, it looks as though there are product tie-ins and special rewards for those participating. Ask Massively: The one where we talk about our 2012 awards Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST Filed under: MMO industry, Opinion, Massively Meta, Ask Massively, Miscellaneous Welcome back to Ask Massively. Here's your present: an edit button! What? You say you didn't get us anything? Awww. Well, let's get back to the important things, like your telling us how wrong our opinions are.thatchefdude (and zaithnoc and cbv1020) asked: How can Guild Wars 2 be your game of the year and also runner-up for biggest disappointment of the year? I understand no game is perfect, but I would expect game of the year to not have enough disappointments in it to warrant it a place as runner-up for disappointment of the year. Because voting. OK, also because of a few other things. The Daily Grind: Would you play an MMO based on The Walking Dead, Borderlands, or FTL? Posted: 27 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-fi, MMO industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind Christmas is a time for family, for giving, and for giving family some credible excuses as to why you're ducking them in order to catch up on all the gaming goodness you missed during the year. In my case, I binged on Age of Wushu and a handful of the year's single-player critical darlings including The Walking Dead, Faster Than Light, and Borderlands 2.As I was feeling guilty for neglecting my bread-and-butter MMOs, I was also thinking about which, if any, of these titles would make for an engaging MMO translation. How about it Massively readers? Would you play MMO versions of those three titles? Why or why not? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Topia Online Kickstarter touts a build-your-own sandbox Posted: 26 Dec 2012 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Sandbox, Crafting There's no denying that 2012 has been a year of Kickstarter campaigns as developers with specific ideas come forward to build their ideal worlds. One project called Topia Online, however, is actually aiming at giving the tools to the players to make their ideal world, not the developers'. How will this be accomplished? Topia Online is a sandbox that will be completely run by the players, from creating abilities to building cities and from controlling all creatures through scrips to customizing and coding NPCs.Uniquely, folks can be any of the creatures in game (including wolves, slimes, and other assorted monsters). Players remain in the persistent world even when offline, and advancement comes through "influence," a currency that players collect each hour of play and can be traded freely. Players can also look forward to crafted everything in the world or even creating their own game worlds governed by their own rules. For even more details, check out the Kickstarter campaign page. A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Tips for City of Heroes refugees in Champions Online Posted: 26 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Super-hero, Game mechanics, Opinion, Free-to-play, Champions Online, A Mild-Mannered Reporter Champions Online has been a breath of fresh air for the past couple of weeks. It's not a perfect game, nor is it a perfect substitute for City of Heroes, but it's a remarkably good approximation. I would imagine that most players familiar with the latter will feel fairly comfortable in the former, once they get over the obvious differences between the two.Not that the hurdles are exactly minor. For all that I've grown fond of Champions Online, it still has a lot of strange fiddly bits, doing with six different systems what most games do with two or three. Just jumping in cold, as I did, can leave you looking around aimlessly and quite possibly result in your making some choices regarding character builds that you swiftly regret. As I also did. So here are a few tips for players new to the game, tilted in no small part to anyone coming over from our dearly departed CoH. I can't keep you from making every mistake, but I can at least help you get a feel for the game's systems in some small part. The War Z's creator disputes trademark suspension Posted: 26 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Horror, MMO industry, Legal, Miscellaneous A couple of days ago, Massively reported that The War Z looked as though the trademark for its name would be suspended by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, forcing the game to choose another title. The game's creator, Sergey Titov, is disputing the suspension, however.Corresponding with Kotaku, Titov said that he had received no such notice and is investigating the situation. "I assume what you see is one of the preliminary applications since it said that it suspended because [the] other application exists," he said. "I've sent an email to our lawyer who filed [the] application and [is] working with us to to provide more details on all this." The War Z has been in hot water as of late due to prematurely launching on Steam and then being forcibly removed by Valve due to accusations of fraud and missing content. Choose My Adventure: Gaining favor with Darth Jadus Posted: 26 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Polls, Screenshots, Opinion, Free-to-play, Roleplaying, Massively Hands-on, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Choose My Adventure While the holidays have put a bit of a halt to most of my playing time in Star Wars: The Old Republic this week, I did manage to achieve level 16 on my Imperial Agent. He's now living it up on Dromund Kaas, getting ready to storm a castle. But some conflicting info from within the Empire's leadership has our pal Xel'es looking to possibly take orders from a new commander. After this week's in-character story behind the cut, you can vote to choose my next move with Xel'es. Last week, you chose for him to become an Operative with Slicing, Underworld Trading, and Cybertech as his crew skills. I decided to make this week's poll something that wouldn't stop me from playing before the poll results came in, which killed a lot of potential playing time last week. WildStar hints at future holiday content Posted: 26 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Sci-fi, Events, in-game, WildStar The final WildStar Wednesday of the year is an interesting beast, to say the least. It's a humorous advertisement for something called Protostar's Gala Winterfest Extravaganza, which looks suspiciously like a thinly veiled preview for a future holiday when the game launches. The Gala Winterfest Extravaganza is "a pleasantly vague and non-threatening holiday event" put on by the Protostar Corporation. It involves an artificial winter makeover of the landscape and plenty of shopping. Seriously, shopping is mentioned like 16 times. Carbine's developers also posted a new holiday card for its fans in addition to the following promise: "We can't wait to introduce you to the Dominion, reveal the other classes, and get you guys into beta next year! Have a Happy New Year from everyone at Carbine!" WildStar hints at future holiday content originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 26 Dec 2012 13:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
