Chiptune Rush, your first-stop chiptune shop Posted: 11 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST
Have any of you ODed on chiptunes yet? No? In that case, allow me to fuel your addiction even further. If nothing else, I'm an enabler. The latest smack is Chiptune Rush, a music store that officially launched on October 23. Established by Mode 7 Games, the indie studio responsible for last year's Frozen Synapse, the shop aims to gather as many notable chip artists as possible then offer their albums at affordable prices, because how else is the junkie on a budget gonna get his fix? Mode 7's own Paul "_ensnare_" Taylor, who produced the Frozen Synapse soundtrack, offers up his wares, as do notable chip artists like Space Town Savior, 4mat, and FEZ composer Disasterpeace, with more expected down the road. Prices range from "pay whatever" to a few bucks at most, and you'll even receive a free music bundle just for signing up to email updates. These albums are available elsewhere on the net -- beek's 7bit date: robot love was featured here on Dtoid, for instance -- but the convenience of having them all under one roof can't be denied. And of course, such a repository can help broaden the minds of chiptune newcomers. It's all about spreading the love, fellas! |
Castlevania: Hymn of Blood web series bares its fangs Posted: 11 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST
Remember how I told you there was a Castlevania movie in the works and that Michael "Worf" Dorn would play a role? Only the latter half was true. The project, entitled Castlevania: Hymn of Blood, is actually a fan-made web series that launched three weeks ago. Surprise! Produced by the video company Warp Factor 2, Hymn of Blood is an alternate telling of Simon Belmont's origins and eventual showdown with Dracula, who happens to be Simon's father. Way to steal Alucard's thunder, guys! Also, I found it pretty funny that Simon tries to use a whip in his first real battle, only for the enemy to catch it and throw it aside like a child's toy. The first three episodes are available for viewing -- one above and the others after break -- and new episodes will premier every Tuesday at noon. Sup Holmes gets BMO'ed with Wayforward's James Montagna Posted: 11 Nov 2012 06:30 AM PST
When series creator Pendelton Ward announced that he was working with WayForward to create an Adventure Time game for the DS/3DS, I pretty much lost my marbles. It's a perfect fit. Adventure Time harnesses the low-fi, genuine weirdness of the kind of film you might see in an independent animation festival and uses it to achieve huge mainstream success. WayForward did the same thing in videogame development. Starting out as a small indie studio, they continue to bring that spirit to their original projects, as well as their work on established brands like A Boy and His Blob, Thor, BloodRayne, Silent Hill, Double Dragon, and now Adventure Time. We'll be talking LIVE to WayForward's James Montagna about that, as well as his work on the upcoming Adventure Time game, the new Shantae title, his solo projects, and much more. It all starts at 1pm PST/4pm EST. Let WayForwardVember begin! |

Champions Online gets massive vehicle update Posted: 11 Nov 2012 06:00 AM PST
Champions Online has gone through some rather big changes since its launch back in 2009, most notably the one in 2011 which saw the MMO go free-to-play. Now there's another rather large update to the game, with the long-awaited vehicle update finally being pushed out by Cryptic Studios in the form of Champions Online: Reloaded. Vehicles can be obtained in several different ways, including the C-Store, Lock Boxes and in the Drifter Store. Champions Online was praised for its outstanding character customization options, and Cryptic has done the same with its vehicles; everything from design, defences, utilities and weapons can be modified. A vehicle tutorial has been made available, simply seek out Max Plank in Ren Cen. Anyone still playing Champions Online? To be very honest I had almost completely forgotten about the game until I saw this. |
The return of The Adventures of Duane & BrandO! Posted: 11 Nov 2012 02:00 AM PST
The first "game music with lyrics" group I remember falling in love with was The Adventures of Duane & BrandO, the white boy nerdcore tag team of Duane Zuwala and Brandon Lackey. Their curse-laden rhymes were loads of fun, from "Cheetahmen 2" and "Final Fantasy" to the legendary "Mega Man 2." They pursued solo careers following a really bad breakup a couple years ago, but their fans always hoped they would one day reconcile their differences. Duane and BrandO must have had some wild makeup sex, because they are back together and committed to returning to the studio and the tour circuit. That means it's Kickstarter time -- a new travel and recording schedule can be pricey, after all. Donations will be accepted through December 13. For the most part, the incentives are just props they've used in past shows, but they are also offering remastered physical copies of their LP of Devastation album. To commemorate the reunion, Duane and BrandO have released a brand new EarthBound-themed music video, "Happy Happy Village," which I've added after the break. The sound is a lot different from their usual high-intensity rap style, but it works considering the source inspiration. I like these cats. I really do. I know their music isn't everyone's cup of morning roast, but I just get so amped when they pop up in my playlist. I want to see them succeed. Let's make it happen! (Thanks for keeping me in the loop, License to Bill!)

Behold the burger of your destruction! Posted: 11 Nov 2012 12:00 AM PST
Each week on Saturday Morning Hangover, we perform the public service of playing through the demos of new releases on Xbox Live Indie Games. While it's probably charitable to call the service "hit or miss" in terms of the content, it is something of a breeding ground for weird and amazing stuff. The absolute best game we played this week was Oh Noes!!2: Attack of the Space Burger. You control a flying burger (presumably from space) which sucks up humans from the ground and uses them to fuel destructive "blood lust" powers which let you carpet bomb with gherkins, gain temporary invulnerability or expunge collected humans in a shower of bodies and gore. Oh, and you have a gun too but I clearly didn't figure that out until nearly the end of the demo when I was forced to face a dolphin defender of the planet. Go grab the demo and see for yourself. If you don't think this is worth dropping a buck on just to see how weird it can get, we have very different priorities in life. |
Freddie Wong's vacation is a 'far cry' from the norm Posted: 10 Nov 2012 04:00 PM PST
With Far Cry 3 less than a month away, the freddiew team of Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch fuel the hype machine with an appropriate homage. A sunny, beach-side getaway in Belize is too trivial for ol' Mr. Wong. He needs a little more excitement in his vacation package. Thankfully, the hotel staff is more than willing to tailor his activity schedule to suit his particular tastes. If you want more SFX action, check out last week's Hitman video after the jump. It's guaranteed to be a billion times better than that Timothy Olyphant bile. freddiew : Far Cry Vacation [YouTube]
