The Repopulation's monthly update details multiplayer vehicles
The Repopulation's end-of-the-month update is here, and October marked more forward progress in terms of feature completion. The team at Above & Beyond Technologies worked out a few kinks in the sci-fi sandbox title's complex vehicle system, and players should see them for the first time in next week's alpha patch.

Vehicles can carry multiple players including a driver, gunners, and passengers. You'll be able to upgrade and customize your vehicles with regard to things like speed, steering, shields, armor, and weapons. The update also features blurbs on performance and world scalability issues, as well as the usual laundry list of bug fixes and tweaks. Check it out at the official Repopulation website.

Asheron's Call turns 13 today
Asheron's Call has put childish things behind it and entered the elite realm of MMO teenagers. Turbine's oldest title is celebrating its 13th anniversary today. "A huge thanks to our community for sticking with us through the years. AC is older than children!" the Turbine feed said.

Asheron's Call released on November 2nd, 1999. It was originally published by Microsoft until 2004, when Turbine (which developed the title) purchased the rights. According to the forums, the team is still chugging forward despite recent Turbine layoffs, and there's a February update in the making.

You can read Massively's history of Asheron's Call in our Game Archaeologist column.

PlanetSide 2 to feature one-click Twitch streaming
Sony Online Entertainment and Twitch want you to know that they've officially joined forces. Per this morning's SOE press release, the firms have conspired to allow one-click streaming inside the PlanetSide 2 beta client. Twitch has been touting the ability to stream at the touch of a button as "the next big thing" for publishers and developers over the last year, and SOE's upcoming sci-fi MMOFPS will be the first title to bring the technology to market.

The firms note that the tech is still in beta given PS2's operational status, but it will be fully functional by the game's November 20th launch date.

    MMO Blender: Eliot's rock odyssey

First person to mention Black Heaven in the comments gets a cookie. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up.
I'm upset with bards in MMOs.

Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that they exist. But every single game that features bards uses them wrong. The bard is always a back-line character, someone who sits in the back and heals people through gently strumming on a lute. And that depresses me, because I want to see some bards that actually rock. I want to see some music used offensively. I want to have the option of making my bard kill things through careful use of sweet riffs.

You can say it sounds ridiculous, but tell me that it's somehow more ridiculous than having a bard heal you via magical singing and I will call you a liar.

So let's go for it. Let's dedicate an entire MMO to bards who aren't about muzak and nurturing new age songs, but bards that are going to defeat things through the unmitigated power of rock. My only regret is that this is a week too late for Rocktober.

What columns have you particularly enjoyed? What feature do you wish we'd bring back? What anecdotes do you have about our half-decade of operation?

Guild Wars 2 teases players with The Lost Shores

I found the shores! They're right here.
Guild Wars 2 is riding high off its recent Halloween event, but that's not the only event that's hitting the game. A new teaser has just been posted for the next event hitting the live servers sometime this month. Deep within the Sea of Sorrows, something is stirring, and the result will lead to an event that we're told will change the face of Tyria forever.

We're told that specifically by the teaser page, that is.

So what will The Lost Shores actually entail? There's no way to know just yet, although some guesses can be made from the handful of teaser screenshots posted to the site, hinting at something vast being dredged up from the depths. What is certain is that this will be a one-time event, something that you can take part in when it happens or miss out on forever. Keep your eyes peeled for more information, and for now, just join us in wondering what might be down there a-stirring.

State of Decay demonstrates the virtues of stealth

State of Decay demonstrates the virtues of stealth
Pop quiz, apocalypse survivors: You desperately need to get into a nearby gun store to complete a mission, but it's surrounded by a small horde of zombies. Running through them and shooting your way in are both undesirable options, so what do you do? What do you do?

In a short alpha video from Undead Labs, a State of Decay player instead uses tricks and stealth to achieve his goal. He tosses some fireworks from a nearby water tower, prompting the zombies to investigate and leave the scene. Following that, it's a quick dash in and out to trigger a job well done.

You can watch this nail-biting footage after the jump, and don't forget to check out Massively's report on the game from PAX.

Nexon working on Mabinogi 2 Arena

Nexon working on Mabinogi 2 Arena
If you're a big fan of the inventive sandbox Mabinogi and action RPG Mabinogi Heroes (known as Vindictus in the west), we have to ask you: Is there room in your heart for more Mabinogi? Nexon's betting on "yes" because the publisher is hard at work on Mabinogi 2 Arena.

Revealed at GStar 2012, Mabinogi 2 takes the franchise in a new direction in a genre that Nexon is calling "MMO Arena." The game's built on an in-house engine and rewards both spectators and players alike. In fact, being a spectator is a major part of Mabinogi 2 as it provides players another way to be entertained by the game. Spectators can aid participants and be given rewards from them in return.

Mabinogi 2 Arena has five classes, combat styles, and body types. It's decidedly an action MMO that involves a wide range of actions such as throwing counters, grabbing opponents, and even slapping. It's slated to launch later this year, and you can watch the shaky-cam trailer after the jump.

Rhode Island EDC sues Curt Schilling and more over 38 Studios loan

        Game title image
Back in May, Project Copernicus developer 38 Studios became embroiled in the controversy of the year when the studio officially shut down and fired all 379 of its employees. The story quickly turned political as the studio had been granted a loan of $75m US by the state of Rhode Island and it became known that the tax-paying public could be hit for an estimated $150.7m US due to the studio's closure.

The story of mishandled taxpayer money has played a big part in the politics of Rhode Island. Today that story developed further as the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which granted the original loan and may therefore be responsible for the public debt, filed a lawsuit against the people who created the deal. The defendants named in the case include 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling, CEO Jennifer McLean, former EDC executive director Keith Stokes, Wells Fargo Securities and even Barclays Capital. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee released a public statement about the lawsuit on YouTube.
