Redcoats die in this sweet AC3 short by Corridor Digital Posted: 22 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT
The British are f*cked. Based on the upcoming Assassin's Creed III, this short film by special effects video team Corridor Digital finds a band of British soldiers dealing with a young lad who had made an attempt on the commanding officer's life. It's all fun and games until Connor appears and goes full beast. As for the boy, he gets what he deserves in the end. Assassin's Creed 3: Rebel Blades [YouTube] |
Those Sony teasers: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Posted: 22 Oct 2012 03:15 PM PDT
All of those Sony teasers we've seen over this last week have been leading up to this final reveal tonight. You all guessed right: It was to promote upcoming game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. This is the full live-action short they've been teasing, called "The All-Star." It comes from the people behind last year's "Michael," as you've probably guessed. Watch Sony dudes team up on other Sony dudes. Watch Sackboy be a total puss. Watch a boy drop a meme. PlayStation All-Stars comes out for PS3 and Vita on November 20th. Hey, do you guys remember what we did to Zeus? |
Guild Wars 2: Shadow of the Mad King starts today Posted: 22 Oct 2012 03:00 PM PDT
If you've been neglecting Guild Wars 2 as I regrettably have, the latest content update should offer plenty of incentive for you to clear some time for ArenaNet's Halloween festivities. Shadow of the Mad King begins today with the first in a four-act story arc. They're appropriately setting the mood with tales of a king who went, well, mad and was chopped up into pieces by his people hundreds of years ago. Has he returned, as the dead so often do in videogames? This new story will be an ongoing event that carries through to October 31. Additionally, Halloween-themed crafting recipes, new items from the Black Lion Trading Company, fresh events, mini-dungeons, and more are being added. ArenaNet is intentionally withholding the specifics, but there's said to be approximately 80 pieces of content all told. |
God of War: Ascension trailer harnesses the power of Zeus Posted: 22 Oct 2012 02:00 PM PDT
Zeus? How in the -- oh, right. This God of War: Ascension trailer is centered around the game's multiplayer. That's a bit more comforting. As you may or may not know already, players can align themselves with specific gods to gain benefits in competition, which is both fitting for the mythological theme and should help to differentiate would-be heroes from one another online. According to the PlayStation Blog, Zeus will be the first option for the upcoming Ascension multiplayer beta due out this winter for PlayStation Plus subscribers. I hope you like lightning ... and don't mind being shocked too much. Feel free to curse Zeus' name when things go sour. |
Nintendo superfan Triforce plans to buy the first Wii U Posted: 22 Oct 2012 01:30 PM PDT
I'm sure you've all heard of Isaiah-Triforce Johnson by now. He's the founder of the competitive gaming organization Empire Arcadia, but you would most likely recognize him as the black dude with the Power Glove who seemingly always manages to be first in line to purchase any new Nintendo doodad -- he was the first man in America to officially buy the Wii as well as the 3DS. Now Triforce plans on being the first person on the planet to purchase a Wii U at retail. The first unit will be sold at the Nintendo World Store in New York, so to be certain no one gets the jump on him, he's already queued up. For your information, today is October 22, and the Wii U won't launch until November 18. That's an insane level of dedication. He's been hassled by the cops in the past for "loitering," but they've never been able to prevent him for completing his mission! Also, "Isaiah-Triforce Johnson" is his actual legal name. Wow. At Least One Person Is Already Waiting In Line For The Wii U [Kotaku] |
Pat the NES Punk & brentalfloss channel their inner Queen Posted: 22 Oct 2012 01:00 PM PDT
[Update: Whoops! The actual NES marathon ended yesterday at 3 PM PST, but Pat is still accepting donations through his site until tomorrow.] Zealous NES collector Pat the NES Punk is holding a Child's Play charity that runs through tomorrow already ended. The current total sits just above $16K, and he's offering incentives to donators to make that final push. At $20K, he was going to release a music video that he and Baldy McBalderson, a.k.a. brentalfloss, collaborated on (with guitar work by Sir Robert Bakker of The Protomen). The goal wasn't met, but "Nintendohemian Rhapsody" is ready for your eyeballs anyway. It is a parody of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," obviously, that laments the "Nintendo Hard" challenge of 8-bit games. I think we can all relate to the boys' plight. Enjoy the vid and donate if you wanna! Pat the NES Punk & Brentalfloss – Nintendohemian Rhapsody [The Punk Effect] |

Our electronic world, for all of the new abilities it can give us, is infinitely more fragile than it once was. Some modern devices literally shatter when dropped a few feet. Hell, even the more robust devices in our silicon armories can still look like sadness and poo after one good smack on a concrete sidewalk. Enter Dynaflo, with a liquid (yeah, liquid), spray-on screen-protector. This "Liquid-Armor" runs a bit on the expensive side at $24.99, but the fact that it you can use it on any screen definitely enhances the utility. Included in an order of this strange acetone-scented magic-juice is a microfiber cloth to both clean and help apply the substance, as well as a small spray container about the size of a bottle of breath spray. To apply, you use one side of the cloth to clear the screen of fingerprints and dust, then spray across the entire surface. Before it dries, spread the liquid with the reverse side of the cloth, wait about ten minutes, and then wipe down with the first side again. If you finish that process correctly, Dynaflo claims that your screen will be twice as scratch resistant as it would be using a standard screen protector. Allegedly, the coating also helps prevent the build-up of dust and finger prints for up to six months. While I obviously didn't have six months to test this stuff, I did allow my electronics to sit around for a few weeks without their daily dusting, and it seemed to work pretty well. Two televisions that were left side by side showed substantive differences between their respective dust buildups. Fingerprint tests yielded similar results. While it didn't make those annoying ridges on the case of my glossy black tech totally disappear, their severity was noticeably reduced. Testing claims of scratch-resistance was a bit more difficult. I didn't have two identical devices I could try this out on. Instead, I just went about my daily life and waited for the inevitable collision between my phone and the planet. Thankfully, unlike the last time I dropped my poor Galaxy Nexus, the phone picked up no scratches, and seemed to be completely fine -- despite hitting some fairly coarse concrete. I'll count that as a win. While it may be a bit odd, it does seem that Liquid Armor lives up to the manufacturer's big words. As I mentioned earlier, as screen protectors go, it is on the expensive side, but the bottle had enough solution to coat three laptops, two televisions (24"), the aforementioned Galaxy Nexus, and a Nintendo DS. So it's certainly possible to get your money's worth, on top of the flexibility of applying it to more than one kind of screen. Overall, I'd definitely give it a recommendation if you're a stickler for electronic cleanliness, or are really paranoid and have a dozen or so smartphones. Either way, if you pick this up, you likely won't be disappointed. |
Super Crate Box is free on iOS today Posted: 22 Oct 2012 12:15 PM PDT
It's somehow been two years since Vlambeer released Super Crate Box for PC. I distinctly remember Conrad getting obsessed with the minimalistic arcade game for a good long time and eventually causing me to get all wrapped up in it as well. Damn that disc gun! Back then, we couldn't believe Super Crate Box didn't cost anything to download. Today, of course, some of the later versions have a price tag. If you were holding off on getting the iOS version of the game, know that it's free today to celebrate the anniversary. It's a particularly good fit for the platform given its rapid-fire gameplay, even if you might not achieve those same high scores you would elsewhere. In related news, Vlambeer has announced that SBC is coming to the Commodore 64 in December -- and it holds up surprisingly well, at least visually; take a look at some footage embedded below, if you're curious. Jonathan tells me that McPixel is similarly getting a C64 release, because sure, why not? Everyone's doing it!

The DTOID Show: Bioshock, Borderlands on iOS & Mew-Genics Posted: 22 Oct 2012 11:30 AM PDT
Since we haven't talked about Borderlands 2 enough, news of an iOS game has been leaked. Team Meat's new game is called Mew-Genics and that's totally okay with me. Bioshock Infinite has a great new trailer, plus some collector's edition details and a little minigame thing for people who pre-order. Finally, PAX is coming to Melbourne, Australia. |

The punditry of the videogame community have been chatting an awful lot about booth babes this past year or so. There are those wanting them banished from events such as E3 and the Eurogamer Expo, and staunchly defending their existence. Does either side really have the right to start dispensing mandates over what jobs can and cannot be available to people? And they are people, not just points on an arguer's scorecard. The Jimquisition doesn't know. It does, however, stick its unwanted oar into the debate because it can. |
Live show: Hot pants, hot wings, and hopefully $10,000 Posted: 22 Oct 2012 10:30 AM PDT
[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch King Foom play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] What an amazing weekend! So far we've raised over $6,500 for Extra Life, and I can't thank everyone enough for their time, support, and hard work in making this happen. But tonight, I'm going to try as best I can. I seemed to have opened my big mouth last night about doing something a bit crazy should we hit a certain dollar amount, and, well, long story short, we hit it. I really didn't think we would make the goal in time, but good job in proving me dead wrong. QotD: What was your favorite part of this weekend's marathon? |
Make your iPhone happy with DoDonPachi Maximum Posted: 22 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT
Cave is arguably the best thing to happen to mobile gaming. There. Said it. I seriously suck at bullet hell-type games, but I still have to get everything that Cave sends your way for iOS devices. They're that good. The next thing you should follow me in getting is DoDonPachi Maximum, which launches for iOS platforms on October 26. In it you'll take a ride on the MBS, also known as the Maximum Bullet Simulator. Dying is fun! You'll also be able to pilot ships from series titles Blissful Death and Resurrection this time around. A new Easy Mode for the iOS version is going to save my ass. Expect unlockable ships that will become available as you get better at the game. For me, that'll never happen. In our gallery you'll find screenshots from both the iPad version and the nice and long iPhone 5 version. |
Steam Workshop's one-year anniversary has arrived! Posted: 22 Oct 2012 09:30 AM PDT
In one year's time, what started off as an easier way for players to access new user-created content for Team Fortress 2 has grown to encompass more than just sweet hats and guns, with a touch of J.C. Leyendecker or Norman Rockwell visual style thrown to them. Dust your finest Ghastly Gibus, Steam Workshop is one year old! Since last year, Steam Workshop has added over 16 games from various publishers to it's modding community, with many others hoping to join in on the fun. At last count, the number of user-created items for these games now ranges around 300,000; with at least 200,000 of those dedicated to Portal 2 content. With the recent addition of software to their library, GameMaker Studio has also seen a boom in content from full games to modelling tools. So far Steam Workshop has had over 55 million items downloads through its service, and considering the passion and dedication of these individuals those numbers can only go up from here. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows trailer is pretty messed up Posted: 22 Oct 2012 09:00 AM PDT
Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is a sequel to last year's Corpse Party. It's coming to the PSP this winter by way of the PlayStation Network. You can try to change fate in this point-and-clicker, but messing up sounds like it'll be just as fun. If you somehow missed the first game, shame on you. It was great. But XSEED forgives you and lets you make up for it with a 50 percent discount on its normal price, taking it down to $9.99 for the next two weeks. Perfect timing with Halloween coming up! |
Contest: Draw some fan art and win Hotline Miami! Posted: 22 Oct 2012 08:30 AM PDT
Our friends at Devolver Digital have delivered 100 Steam keys to Dtoid's doorstep for their new top-down shooter Hotline Miami! The game looks literally insane, and I mean that as a compliment. Though it may appear to be an homage to the original Grand Theft Auto games at first glance, there's a lot more going on here, so check out our previews if you missed them the first time around! To win the game for yourself, just draw us some Hotline Miami-inspired fan art! You can hit up the video or gallery below for inspiration (including a piece of fan art drawn by a 10-year-old), but as crazy as this game is, literally anything you can come up with will be eligible, so let your minds go wild! The contest closes this Sunday, October 28 at 11:59 PM Pacific. Good luck, and have fun! |
