Life is Strange when you're a Snake Eaterrr

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST

I noticed the creepy janitor in Life is Strange slowly climbing up the ladder and thought, "Ah, I see, an organic, in-world time limit." Nick Robinson thought of Metal Gear Solid 3, which is always the better thought.

Remember that time Eiffel 65 sang about PlayStation?

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST

You know Eiffel 65 for the international sensation "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," whose music video looks like it was ripped straight from a videogame, but did you know the Italian Eurodance group also put out a song about the original PlayStation? It is so special. A cultural artifact full of name drops:

♫ Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Omega Boost
Bloody Roar, X-Files, all over the world
Come on
Ridge Racer
Oddworld
Winning Eleven

The game on the PlayStation ♫

I was half screwing around on reddit, half seeing what folks were talking about, and the track, "My Console," came up. Soon after I decided I couldn't stand to continue my day without posting it.

BioWare GM: Dropping last-gen consoles has a huge impact on Mass Effect 4's gameplay goals

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

Like my grammy after we put her in a home, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are slowly fading away to make room for the new generation. Aaryn Flynn, general manager of BioWare Canada, spoke about how Dragon Age: Inquisition and dropping support for last-gen consoles has affected the design of Mass Effect 4 in a post on NeoGAF.

Flynn stated that although Mass Effect 4 and an unrevealed new IP utilize the same Frostbite engine as Dragon Age: Inquisition, it did not serve as a prototype or blueprint for any new design direction other than working with larger, more fluid areas. He believes that each game should draw on what made the series successful as opposed to simply replicating the gameplay and design of Inquisition. He used the return of the Mako in Mass Effect 4 as an example of how that series' history can be drawn on and how he hopes that its implementation will be closer to the idea that originated with the first Mass Effect before the limitations of the technology of the time took over.

Flynn said that focusing on purely current-gen consoles and PC had the most overall affect on the design process, implying that, unlike many titles released in the last year, concessions wouldn't have to be made to ensure the games could also be released on older hardware.

Stop home invaders with traps and towers in Dungeon Warfare

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST

These past couple weeks, the time I would normally spend reading right before bed has gone toward Kingdom Rush and its sequels. Those stars are throwing off my sleep schedule in a major way, and I can't deny it any longer: I'm back into tower defense again. Way, way back.

It's a happy coincidence, then, that I would come across Dungeon Warfare today.

That generic name doesn't inspire much confidence, but the underlying concept is cool: you're defending a dungeon with towers, traps, minecart-delivered bombs, and "summonable allies." Traps, man -- my one weakness. I'm also liking the overhead perspective. Suits the setting.

Borderlands leaving old gen behind

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 10:15 AM PST

Coming out of an always-exciting earnings call that publishers love to have, it was revealed that the next Borderlands game will be for next gen only (or new gen or current gen or whatever gen you want to fight about on the Internet).

That means you can go ahead and pack away your old crappy systems since they are completely useless now.

According to GameSpot, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford called the upcoming Borderlands "the big one" and the game is being developed "specifically for next-gen consoles."

The PS4 and Xbox One have been out since 2013. It's 2015. So, maybe it's time to drop that whole next gen thing? I don't know, just an idea.

Ubisoft restores some third-party Far Cry 4 keys

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST

Just over a week after Ubisoft deactivated digital copies of Far Cry 4 purchased through various third-party resellers, the publisher has reactivated copies of the game that have been played in some capacity and has permanently deactivated the rest. Apparently, the codes in question had been purchased from Origin using stolen credit cards, leading to the mass deactivation.

"We are working with EA to prevent situations like this from happening again, and we will continue to deactivate keys that are found to be fraudulently obtained and resold," Ubisoft said in a statement to Game Informer. The keys in question came from sites such as G2A, a peer-to-peer code selling website.

G2A's marketing manager, Marek Zimny, spoke to Destructoid back in January regarding the mass code deactivation. "G2A is well aware of this process and will do everything possible to compensate for that. For users who have made transactions without G2A Shield, we will check if the corresponding merchant was responsible for the withdrawal of the code," Zimny said. "If so, these users will get a compensation."

Ubisoft reiterated the importance of buying codes from less shady retailers (like Amazon) or approved shady retailers (like GameStop). "We strongly recommend that players purchase keys and downloadable games only from the Uplay shop or trusted retailers."

If you're new to H1Z1 and these guys show up, you're joining a fight club

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST

Like the Penis Brothers of yesteryear, some people in zombie survival games are less concerned with the undead, and more intent on messing with fellow humans. You know what they say: man is the real monster.

This group in H1Z1 has a new-found affinity for finding fresh players without gear ("bambis") and pitting them against one another Fight Club-style. They realize the potential in this around the 3:20 mark, and "The First Annual H1Z1 Fight Club" takes place at about 5:00 (after everyone annoying shouts into their mic in unison).

What follows is an awkward fist-filled two-step to the tune of "Down with the Sickness" while they get egged on at gunpoint. Congrats, PlsDontShootPlsPls; I like to think you're just the first of many fight club champions in H1Z1.

Red Goddess is a beauty

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 09:15 AM PST

Yanim Studio has released a new trailer for its Unreal Engine 4 platformer Red Goddess. The game is described as a "nonlinear side-scroller" and is slated for release at some point in April on PC, Mac, Linux, and PlayStation 4 (Wii U and Vita versions will need to wait a little longer).

The developers have pointed out to us that they may intend on making an Xbox version, but are awaiting a dev kit following their approval by Microsoft.

In the game, players get to control a deity named Divine. Little Divine is tasked with exploring her own mind and the planet that apparently fits within it. Of course, there's more to it than that. Players also are helped along with Rage and Fear -- two alternate personalities within Divine.

The game is currently moving toward alpha, so expect to hear more about this little dazzler as April approaches.

Time to get your Stig on

If you're a car junkie, then you should be very familiar with Top Gear. Microsoft is hoping that familiarity will lead to DLC sales as the Forza Horizon 2 Top Gear Car Pack has just been made available to Xbox One racers for $5.

Have a look at the list of cars available (including a freebie):

Fine, Star Wars Humble Bundle, I'll play Republic Commando

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST

On Sunday, I came closer than I ever have to downloading Republic Commando thanks to its recent debut on GOG.com, but I didn't. After reflecting on my growing backlog, I chickened out.

Now I've got an even more compelling opportunity to play the squad-based shooter: it's available in the Star Wars Humble Bundle. Here's the tier breakdown, with more games to come soon:

  • Pay what you want: Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Dark Forces.
  • Pay more than the average: Battlefront II, Knights of the Old Republic II, Republic Commando.
  • Pay $12 or more: Empire at War: Gold Pack, The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition, The Force Unleashed II.

Super curious to see what else will join the bundle. I'm hoping for Dark Forces II (because I am a bad person who never played it). That should be feasible enough. What else?

Review: Pix the Cat

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST

Pix is a mix of the two most saccharine basic emoticons, :3 and ^_^, a face for the forgotten mascot age. Just too cute, and not in a way that ever betrays the fiendish score-chaser underneath. Sincere cuteness. A real testament to the species post-Flicky.

Now it's all about the cat collecting eggs through panel after panel of the Grid of Infinity and depositing a growing tail of ducklings into safe little holes lest they remain, stuck, as infinite guests.

Team Fortress 2sdays: Sportsball!

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST

[Before we begin, a moment of silence for amazing TF2 video maker kitty0706 and the equally amazing Monty Oum from Rooster Teeth -Mike]

Today’s post will be fairly short, but important. Due to scheduling conflicts, "Between 2Fort" with ChillyBilly is being rescheduled for the future at some point. Sorry about that folks. Also, as time allows I’m going to be looking into swapping out some of the older custom maps for some news ones, as well as seeing what other plugins we can add.

On a completely different note, holy crap the Super Bowl was intense at the end. I actually looked up from baking cookies and drinking [You're odd Hank -Mike] long enough to watch those last few plays. When the guy got the thingy from the other guy and everyone started fighting, that was amazing. I’d never seen a hockey match like that ever. Wow.

So what is TF2sday?

Every Tuesday, a ton of folks from all across Destructoid hop on to the community Team Fortress 2 server to play, talk, and shoot each other. It's usually a pretty crazy good time, and almost always involves various melee only matches between a handful of classes. So feel free to jump on and join us sometime!

New to TF2sday?

Don't worry, you're not alone! Any and all Dtoiders are welcome, so please don't be shy. If there is ever something wrong, or if you need to contact one of the server admins, please see below, all admin names and links to their Steam profile is listed.

These pointy Warcraft III models sure bring me back

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST

Blizzard is giving custom-game creators access to thousands of Warcraft III assets for use in the StarCraft II Arcade, including character and structure models, music, sound effects, and user interfaces for each race. What will they make with it? Better yet, what won't they make?

The assets are, for the time being, only on StarCraft II's public test realm, which can be accessed from the Region/Account dropdown on the Battle.net home screen. But don't let that stop you!

As someone who has spent hundreds of hours playing custom games like Defense of the Ancients and Element Tower Defense in Warcraft III, this news is delightful.

Project Scissors: NightCry looks terrifying in motion

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

Here it is: The debut trailer for Clock Tower spiritual successor NightCry.

The point-and-click horror game takes place on a luxury cruise liner, where we see the protagonist run and hide from the murderous "Scissorwalker" and other horrors.

Nudemaker is looking to raise at least $300,000 via Kickstarter to finance a PC release, though the chances of doing so seem grim. The crowdfunding campaign currently isn't on pace to achieve its goal and will require something of a sea change to right the ship.

In Darkest Dungeon, what doesn't kill you only makes you more peculiar

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST

“If I am mad, it is mercy! May the gods pity the man who in his callousness can remain sane to the hideous end!” – Howard Phillips Lovecraft, The Temple

As you might be aware by now, Darkest Dungeon is a visually striking, turn-based role-playing game featuring roguelike elements with a very clever twist. Unlike conventional RPGs, Red Hook's incorporates a unique system of psychological pressures and their subsequent side effects that run parallel and eventually intertwine with your party's development, creating an entirely new experience each time that you roll a new game.

As your party gains in experience by adventuring through these darkened and harrowing lands, you'll follow the familiar routine of periodically upgrading their particular abilities and equipment, making each character a little more effective at what they do as you progress. What makes Darkest Dungeon so singular is that second set of mechanics I mentioned: the Affliction system.

Review: Apotheon

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST

Apotheon is the newest game from the developers at Alientrap, the team behind a small game called Capsized. Now personally, I loved Capsized and think it was overlooked by most. It had interesting mechanics and a plot that wasn't told through lines and lines of dialogue. It left a huge impression on me and I knew to look forward to whatever that team did in the future.

Well, the future is now, and Apotheon is out. It certainly lives up to the high standard set forth by Capsized, and pushes the bar even further. With an art style that is bound to get people's attention, this is a game can keep the attention with rock-solid gameplay.

Much like the way the game will feature a large selection of fighters to pick from, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is giving players a wide array of choices when it comes to nabbing a special edition of Mortal Kombat X. The publisher revealed four today, and their goodies range from statues to comic books to digital add-ons.

This is the description that WBIE gave for each of Mortal Kombat X's special editions:

Dead or Alive 5 trailer shows off alternate bikini and ninja costumes

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST

Pretty cool. This video is three trailers in one. The regular old gameplay trailer, then a deeper look at Dead or Alive 5: Last Round's characters (there's two new ones in this iteration), and then sexy bikini ladies. Actually, fighters in bikinis is kind of not sexy to me, but folks like their foxy boxing. And nude mods.

Speaking of nude mods, remember that the PC version is delayed until March 30, but comes with free costumes to make up for it.

Review: Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect: Episode One

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

I was skeptical of Sons of Anarchy at first, but once I realized it was Hamlet on wheels I was in. Its seven season run wasn't perfect (particularly the Belfast plotline), but it kept me thoroughly entertained throughout, wanting to check in every week to see where the Sons took me.

Having just ended the show, series creator Kurt Sutter likely wants to keep the good times rolling, with a potential prequel TV series, and now, a brand new adventure game called The Prospect

Final Fantasy XIV kicks off its 'Valentione's Day' event

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST

Final Fantasy XIV likes it keep its players interested by running frequent events, and the latest one kicks off today. It's called "Valentione's Day," and is obviously themed after the real life celebration in mid-February.

You'll be able to earn a new Chocobo barding (Paramour), as well as a tabletop cake, outdoor furnishing, and a heart firework-like contraption. Like most of the events it's short (less than an hour if you rush), but it's a nice distraction to enjoy with your friends.

You can find it at the Old Gridania Amphitheatre (X:10, Y: 9).

Sonic Runners debuted its first trailer, and it sure looks like a runner, guys! The game is set to arrive in spring 2015 in Japan, but it will likely get a localization because mobile games make tons of money.

How many times can Sega use that "yearly countdown" trailer to appeal to old school fans? Remember when pretty much every Sonic game was good? Kinda. At least the announcer is excited.

To help move things along a bit two new reward tiers have been added, including an exclusive color variant, or a bundle including the original figure. The core toy is still $80, the variant is $100, and it's $180 for the lot. You can view it in the gallery below.

GTA Online undergoing some maintenance this morning

Posted: 03 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST

GTA Online's servers are currently offline. But don't panic, it's not a result of dropped service or an attack or anything, it's just regular old scheduled maintenance.

It started at 5AM GMT, and is reported to last six hours in total. This maintenance affects older Rockstar games too, in case you still play Red Dead Redemption. When everything is ready to go, this site will be updated.

Review: Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series: The Lost Lords

Posted: 02 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST

I would not last a day in Westeros. My best hope would be to spend some time in Oldtown to train as a maester, and even though it would help to protect me from personally going to war, I would probably be too close to the political intrigue underneath it all.

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series: The Lost Lords is out, and now some of the seeds sown in Episode One are ready to harvest. As it turns out, I made all of the wrong decisions in Iron From Ice, and I continue to make all of the wrong decisions. With the path it is currently on, my version of House Forrester is doomed.
