The modern Star Fox puppets are so much cuter than the originals

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT

The Jim Henson Company's puppets were an honest-to-god highlight of Nintendo's E3 2015 showing, and it's about time someone dusted them off. Star Fox Zero is only a couple weeks away!

I'm sure some of you will have opinions about the content of this "Foxy Fox" trailer, and I'll leave you to it soon enough, but I do want to point out Peppy's subtle nose twitch. Nice little touch there. Cute!

Comparatively, Nintendo's old Star Fox puppets used in the '90s for promotional materials, magazines, and the SNES box art creep me out to this day. More so now than as a kid, actually.

Keep your distance, Slippy! If that even is your real name.

Last chance to save on Dark Souls III pre-order deals

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 02:00 PM PDT

With less than a week to go, the April 12 release of Dark Souls III inches closer and the clock is now ticking on select pre-order deals. PC players are receiving discounts on Dark Souls III for up to 25 percent off while console gamers can nab the usual gift-code bonuses. While Bandai Namco's hyped-up announcement was lame, the game pre-load is at least now live for PC players, and thus most digital retailers are sending out keys as of writing.

Our pick for the best PC deal would be at GamesPlanet, where you'll see a 20 percent off discount to £31.99. While the currency is displayed in GBP, you can pick up a copy of the game in most parts of the world. Currency math puts the game at about $45 USD, making it a 24 percent discount for those in the US. Note that this version is region locked and can't be activated from Japan and North Korea (damn you Un regime), so if you live there, don't buy this copy of the game.

Dark Souls III Standard PC (Steam keys)

Dark Souls III Deluxe PC (Bundled with Season Pass)

Dark Souls III Console

Pre-ordering at GamesPlanet or FunStock will net you the soundtrack as a bonus, as will grabbing the "Day One Edition" for consoles over at the respective retailers listed above. For the console version, pre-ordering also gets you a copy of the official Prima strategy guide and the O-sleeve packaging, so you can die just a wee bit less in Dark Souls III.

Note that once the game is released, retailers will start carrying the "Standard Edition" versus the "Day One Edition" of Dark Souls III. There's no real difference sans the aforementioned bonuses.

If you don't have GCU or Amazon Prime, you won't be able to net the 20 percent discount and the only non-membership pre-order deal would be at the Microsoft Store, where pre-ordering gets you a $10 Xbox One gift code, good for spending on the Xbox store.

Saturday morning and I'm thinking about what should I do today?

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Deadly Premonition and D4 creator Swery (who has contributed a guest article here in the past) has been on a roll on Twitter lately. Maybe it's all the mind gunk that would otherwise be poured into a second season of D4 now just seeping out to any outlet it can find while Swery's on hiatus.

It's not the righteous, casual fire of Hideki "Ask your mom" Kamiya or the austere brilliance Hideo Kojima maintains despite his hot new scruffy beard. Instead it's an affable realness, sincerely relatable.

In addition to those posters, Castlevania and Silent Hill are getting vinyl releases too

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 01:00 PM PDT

You may have heard that Mondo will be selling four pretty amazing posters at Emerald City Comicon, but there's another surprise in the mix as well.

The company has announced that there will be a pair of limited edition vinyl soundtracks for both Silent Hill and Castlevania for sale in the future. They'll deal with Simon's Quest, Dracula's Curse, and Symphony of the Night, as well as unannounced games from the Silent Hill and Contra franchises. Castlevania vinyls will actually be at San Diego Comic Con in July, with others to be revealed at a later date.

For those who are attending we'll try to keep you as up to date as possible, because these sound killer for collectors out there.

Why you would want an Assassin's Creed bust is beyond me

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 12:30 PM PDT

While I can see the appeal behind a cool looking figure of Ezio leaping off of a building, I don't share the same excitement for busts of the same character, with his arms ripped off, looking down at his life choices (presumably what lead to said arm issues). Said busts range from $39.99 to $49.99, depending on whether or not you want paper bronze or plastic. There's also an Altair model if Ezio isn't your thing, and a $299.99 figurine if you are literally a millionaire.

As a collector who has a lot of tiny little plastic figures from Nintendo and various other statues, I probably shouldn't be talking.

Get the best Miitomo Drop items without blowing through your coins

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Turns out prayer isn't the easiest way to get items in Miitomo Drop. The minigame, stashed in the shop section of Nintendo's recent mobile game Miitomo, offers players a chance at themed items through a pachinko-style game of chance. Or rather, a game of skill if you know what you're doing.

Miitomo's best and brightest have pooled their resources and figured out the easiest way to get each of the limited-edition items offered in the nine current Drop games, including the ninja-themed goodies released yesterday.

There's a full list on the Miitomo subreddit with advice for nabbing most of the current prizes. A warning, though: some of the videos could be hard to watch if you've already spent a chunk of change trying to get one specific accessory.

The studio behind Rust has a new Minecraft-style VR game

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 11:30 AM PDT

At first glance, Chunks just seems like a form of Minecraft designed with virtual reality in mind. You can create and destroy your overly-familiar-looking sandbox world as an all-seeing being in the sky, or mercilessly toss your little block people around. Which is fine, if not exactly original, and probably enough of a draw for it to find an audience among eager new HTC Vive owners hungry for content.

I almost didn't stick with the trailer, but I'm glad I did. Chunks also has a roller-coaster-building tool that lets players essentially draw their own custom tracks right onto the landscape, then take a ride in first-person. Even in just this trailer footage, outside of VR, that seems genuinely cool.

The game is launching on Steam Early Access this Tuesday, April 12 for $19.99, where it is expected to stay for "around two to four months" before hitting Steam proper.

According to Facepunch, "The core components of Chunks are implemented and playable, but we'll need your feedback to make the game as intuitive and polished as possible. We also hope to foster a compelling library of user created tools and game modes, for which we'll need to make sure content creators have access to all the facilities they need."

Based on the trailer, this seems somewhat light on content given that price point, but I think there's potential for it to become much more interesting if it embraces its weirder side.

After one year in operation, Blizzard moves to shut down unofficial Vanilla WoW server

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 11:00 AM PDT

For the past year, a private World of Warcraft server called Nostalrius has been in operation, with one goal in mind -- preserve the original Vanilla experience, without any additional expansions or updates. It's a noble goal, but also one that violates Blizzard's Terms of Service. Naturally, the publisher has served them a Cease & Desist order.

According to the project, they have received notices from Blizzard US and France, and will shut down on April 10. They are exploring other options, including a release of the source code, but for now, the dream is over.

In honor of this excuse for me to talk about Vanilla WoW, here is a picture of one of my favorite fights from the game -- Onyxia. I had a chance to chat with a few of the people who developed Burning Crusade recently, and man, what a great era for MMO players. In its prime, World of Warcraft was one of the greatest games ever made, and in many ways, it may never be topped.

Walmart is selling Quantum Break for $48

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 10:45 AM PDT

Don't have an Amazon Prime or Best Buy's Gamers Club Unlocked membership? No problemo, says Walmart. If you're planning to pick up Xbox One's latest exclusive title Quantum Break, the game is already discounted by 20 perfect over at the retailer for $47.99.

Did Walmart buy one too many copies? Did the game not sell as well as expected? We're not privy to the details but we do know that discounts on AAA console games within a week after release are very rare, particularly at 20 percent off.

Generally, we'll see a modest discount of $10, and it'll take about a good month or two for it to move up to a $12 discount. But here we are, three days after release. You'll have to add Quantum Break to your cart to see the price, and free shipping isn't available so you'll need to pick up your order from the nearest Walmart.

Not sure about the title? Check out our review.

David Hayter is back as Snake and he's... selling cars?

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 10:30 AM PDT

Many fans missed hearing David Hayter as the English voice of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, and it's clear he's still bummed to this day to have been pushed aside in favor of actor Kiefer Sutherland. That whole beef between him and director Hideo Kojima only gets weirder today as Hayter shows up, in character, to chat with the Colonel about the new Ford Focus.

When I first saw this video at a glance, I thought it was some fan-made thing and didn't even bother clicking play. Nope! Totally real! And there's a second advertisement with Psycho Mantis.

Car manufactures love using video games to sell their wares as of late. It must be working.

Also, for the record, this is what that #snakemystery was about.

Review: Minecraft: Story Mode: Order Up!

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT

As the old saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder. That might have happened with Minecraft: Story Mode. The first four episodes of the season released within two and a half months of one another, and I had been pretty lukewarm on them. Nothing was especially bad, but it seemed like Telltale was just checking boxes toward its mediocre production.

Objectively, Order Up! isn't a whole lot different from the previous episodes. It has one thing going for it that the others didn't: it's self-contained. Even so, I found myself enjoying this final installment more than the others, and I suspect it's largely because of the three-month break since Episode Four.

Video game Olympics are now a thing, and they're built on a not-great premise

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 09:30 AM PDT

When many of the world's best athletes are in Rio de Janeiro for this summer's Olympics, many of the world's best eSports athletes will be there too. At this week's London Games Festival, the eGames were announced -- ostensibly an Olympics for video games.

The plan is to hold the eGames in Olympic host cities while the Olympics are happening. So, this summer, the eGames will be in Rio de Janeiro; they'll be in Pyeongchang in 2018, and Tokyo in 2020.

This competition will be headed by International eGames Committee -- a newly-formed group backed by the UK government. Thus far, there are four countries confirmed for the eGames in Rio: Brazil, Britain, Canada, and the United States.

As of now, it's undecided what titles will be played at the first eGames. All that's known is it will be a "mix of PC and console games, maybe mobile." An eGames organizer says "Currently, most competitions are single games like Call of Duty or FIFA. So, we will try to emulate the magic of an Olympics by having legends/champions from various eSports all in the same location."

In theory, that all sounds innocuous enough. But, there are at least two major concerns. First, a recent running theme with Olympic host cities is that the event can cause massive infrastructural strain and drain public resources. It's so bad that Boston, a strong contender for the 2024 Olympics, withdrew its bid. Its citizens didn't even want to hold the world's greatest athletic event.

Infamously, Russia was under-prepared two years ago. There were unfinished construction projects and environmental concerns. Rio might be even worse. Recent reports indicate the water for the outdoor events will be sewage-laden and the city won't be able to clean it up in time.

Relatively, the eGames will surely be a small event when compared to the actual Olympics. Still, these aren't cities we need to burden any further. By all accounts, they already have trouble supporting the influx of hundreds of thousands of people. Why make that incrementally worse?

The second problem is far more pressing for the athletes: They won't be getting paid. Instead, they'll be competing for "the opportunity to take home gold for [their] country." The world's top eSports competitions have purses worth millions of dollars. Supposedly, the idea behind not paying is that this is more in line with the Olympics.

The issue being overlooked is that eSports athletes already have several chances to prove they're the best in the world. The likes of Major League Gaming provide ample opportunity for that. Someone who has spent their entire life excelling at the ice luge needs the Olympics because it's the peak of that mountain. The eGames aren't automatically the creme de la creme simply because of a self-drawn comparison and proximity to the Olympics.

It's asking a lot of eSports competitors to willingly trade pay for patriotism. And, it's coming at a time when everyone will be wholly occupied worrying about another, more substantial event.

If the eGames really aims to be the Olympics of eSports, why not give it the push it deserves? Hold it in a different year, in a different city, and pay the athletes. That will incentivize the world's best players, and they wouldn't have the actual Olympics bogarting all the attention. That's a video game Olympics that would truly be best for video games.

Review: Logitech G610 Orion Brown

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 09:00 AM PDT

For the last couple months, I've been using a $2 keyboard that I bought because I built a PC with leftover parts I had, and needed something functional for Destructoid. While my main PC has a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate, that's the family computer, meaning my little brother is glued to it constantly playing Final Fantasy XIV.

Since Destructoid has been making an effort to do more hardware reviews, we visited with Logitech during GDC, where we were given the rundown on its new keyboard, the G610 Orion Brown, and its new wireless mouse, the G900 Chaos Spectrum (expect a review for that too). It can be hard to get a sense of how reliable, intuitive, and comfortable a keyboard can feel in such a circumstance, so now that I've had a few weeks with the Orion Brown, I have some Thoughts.

Gender options and voice acting rumored for the new Zelda

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT

There is a flurry of rumors hitting the net today surrounded the upcoming Zelda title for Wii U.

The main source of the rumor is Emily Rogers, who is known for leaking the existence of a Paper Mario game on the Wii U before Paper Mario: Color Splash's announcement. Rogers' sources have said Zelda is coming to both the Wii U and NX, there will be a choice between a man or woman as the playable character, and there will be voice acting for most characters except for Link.

We here at Destructoid have heard that the playable female character may very well be Linkle, who was introduced recently in Hyrule Warriors Legends, but like all rumors take these with a grain of salt.

I was just thinking earlier, what if we could select Link's gender, but there were no appearance changes based on that? I mean, Link is already androgynous and really I can only see that being a win for everyone.

The Nintendo 'Super Spring Sale' is pretty dope

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT

Third parties typically have sales on Nintendo platforms weekly -- to the point where Atlus and a few other usual suspects almost perpetually have games on sale. But as always, Nintendo is very resilient to the practice, given that some titles are still fully priced at retail even years later. This Super Spring Sale is actually decent, and involves a ton of games from just about every major player.

Some standouts include Mario Kart 8 at $41.99, DuckTales: Remastered at $4.99, and Shin Megami Tensei IV at $13.99. Gunman Clive even joins the sale on 3DS for $1.39, down from $1.99. Give the full list a look and note that we have reviews for just about every game on the list.

The sale will run from this very moment until April 21 at 8:59 PT.

PC players can pre-load Dark Souls III on Steam right now

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 07:30 AM PDT

The only thing standing between PC players and their sweet, sweet Dark Souls III is four days and 17.2GB. As of today, we have the means to knock out half of that list -- and it's not the half that would require a time machine.

Dark Souls III can now be pre-loaded on Steam for those who have already bought it. Just click a button and let Valve and your internet service provider do the rest of the work. That's about as simple as it gets.

Once that's out of the way, we play the waiting game -- a game that's maybe tougher than Dark Souls III, itself. Four more sleeps!

Review: Roccat Kiro modular ambidextrous gaming mouse

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT

Gaming peripherals, on the whole, can be pretty dang expensive. If it isn’t a £150 keyboard, it’s a £200 pair of headphones, or maybe even an £800 VR headset. Add all the different bits-and-bobs you need together, and PC gaming turns into a very expensive prospect even before you’ve bought the PC itself.

Thankfully, most manufacturers tend to have a few lower-cost items in their ranges to compensate for this. At about £30, the Roccat Kiro ambidextrous gaming mouse falls firmly into that market. Unfortunately, even at the relatively low price, it's still incredibly hard for me to recommend.

Legacy of Kain multiplayer spinoff Nosgoth is shutting down next month

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 06:30 AM PDT

The Legacy of Kain games can't catch a break. It's been thirteen years since there's been a sequel in the wonderful vampire series. We've seen thirty minutes of the cancelled Dead Sun, which at least led to the asymmetrical spinoff Nosgoth, but now Square Enix and Psyonix have announced that come May 31, the battle between humans and vampire-kind will be coming to an end.

A post on the Square Enix forums from Nosgoth's community manager titled "A Farewell To Arms - Nosgoth's Final Days Are Upon Us" heralds the end of the game's development. Any in-game purchases made after March 1 of this year are refundable, and people can still play until the end of May. This timing is odd, as Psyonix (now working on Rocket League) spoke to Gamereactor last month about future plans for the game and taking it out of Steam Early Access, where it's been available since early last year.

It's always a shame to hear that a game with an active playerbase is shutting down. I haven't personally played Nosgoth, but I've heard positive chatter about this. The community manager also mentioned that "any future Legacy of Kain project will be considered independently of Nosgoth and on the merits of the proposals alone." I wonder if we'll see another developer pick up the series through Square Enix's Collective, as we saw with Fear Effect yesterday.

Heroes of the Storm has unlocked every character for the weekend

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT

In celebration of the Heroes of the Dorm finals this weekend, Blizzard is running a special in-game promotion that you're gonna want to check out. Besides an XP bonus that will work on top of any other boosts you have active (like the one for playing in a party), the whole roster is freely playable.

Unlocked Heroes Event: April 8 at 10:00am Pacific - April 11 at 10:00am Pacific

50 Percent Bonus XP Event: April 8 at 10:00am Pacific - April 18 at 10:00am Pacific

Lately, I've fallen into a pattern of booting up the Battle.net launcher, remembering I have to wait for files to update, then losing interest by the time Heroes of the Storm is ready to go. It's... silly. And entirely avoidable if I would just leave the app running. I can't be helped sometimes.

Not this time. I'm super interested to see who people will play as with unrestricted access.

Atlus turns 30 years old this week

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 05:30 AM PDT

You could say that I'm an Atlus fan.

I first learned of Atlus proper in the mid-'90s, when my cousin brought over a little old game called Persona. Come to find out I had been playing "Atlus" games, whether developed or published, for several years, and the rest was history.

Founded in April of 1986, Atlus has seen its fair share of troubles. In 2003, it was acquired by a toy company. Three years later -- another acquisition. And most famously, in 2013, it was absorbed into Sega Sammy after its parent company had filed for bankruptcy. While many predicted the death of the Atlus brand as we know it, the company seems to be operating a lot like Blizzard under Activision -- almost autonomously, like nothing happened.

And that's how it has been carrying on to this day, with new Shin Megami Tensei and Persona games in the works, just like always. Happy anniversary, Atlus!

Here's exactly whats in Destiny's April 12 update

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Since Bungie has decided to break down the April Destiny update into multiple Twitch streams, it can get a little confusing in terms of figuring out what's actually in it. Thankfully, it sent over a handy infographic that explains it all in picture form, so you don't have to go hunting around for each tidbit.

In short, there's a new quest, new faction rewards, a Level 41 Prison of Elders variant, two Strikes, upped Heroic Strike rewards of 310 Light, and a challenge mode that goes up to 335 Light. The exact rewards and Light levels are in the gallery below, so feel free to plan out your new approach for maxing out!

Having maxed in every expansion, I may sit this one out for the first time. It's a retread of my least favorite expansion, House of Wolves, and in fact, the entire update looks like a retread. We'll see if my raid group is interested.

The hyped up Dark Souls mystery announcement today was...clothing

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:45 AM PDT

Yesterday, Namco Bandai tweeted out an ominous "big announcement" reveal for Dark Souls. Seemingly realizing that maybe raising expectations isn't a great thing to do, it then tweeted "don't worry, it's not about the game." Right after everyone speculated on a Scholar of the First Sin 60fps console remake of the original game. Well, it definitely isn't.

The big announcement is...clothing! It's a new clothing line, and not in fact anything excited or related to the possible Dark Souls board game we saw recently at GDC. One of the main pieces of clothing has a really, really bad design that looks like it was rejected from Hot Topic. You can see it in the galley below but I highly advise against it.

My word. Is it getting hot in here? Sorry folks, I got carried away. Anyway, did you guys know that OverlordZetta and Malthor suck and are liars? It's true. Richard Grieco took a break from the Ed Hardy boutique he works at to tell me so. I mean c'mon now, would this face lie?

Dragon Quest Heroes II gets an in-depth new trailer

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:00 AM PDT

We got a quick look at Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End a couple months back, but the newest trailer is much more comprehensive, giving each character new and old ample screen time and explaining all of the various mechanics.

It seems to be much the same experience as the first entry, gameplay-wise, just with new characters, new enemies, and new equipment. And I'm certainly not complaining, Dragon Quest Heroes was excellent and I look forward to more of the same.

All of the new characters look like a fun time. I'll probably be rolling with the female protagonist again, this time the pink-haired girl, Tereshia. But I can't wait to try everyone else out too.

The biggest difference I can glean from the trailer is a new type of Monster Coin, which allows characters to transform into a monster that the player can control. I can definitely get behind that idea! Recruiting monsters was already one of my favorite things to do in the first game, and now I can become them? Amazing!

Dragon Quest Heroes II is set to release in Japan on May 27 for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita.

Almost one year later, Splatoon is still being updated

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:30 AM PDT

Can you believe it?

It's been nearly a year since Splatoon launched last May. And with this April 12 update, that would make it almost a year since Nintendo has been sporadically supporting the game with new levels, weapons, and other content. Not bad for its first major foray into the online shooter arena, right?

But yeah, on April 12, version 2.7.0 will hit, which will bring in eight "Sheldon's Pick" weapons, four of which have been revealed on the official Tumblr page. Its enough to get me back in for a bit, at least.

Welkin Road is like Mirror's Edge without the story

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:00 AM PDT

Next week, yet another video game will be hitting Steam's Early Access program. The culprit? A parkour joint by developer Gregor Panič, titled Welkin Road. The pitch is easy to comprehend. It's a 3D freerunner set across multiple abstract setpieces. In other words, the best part of Mirror's Edge -- the Pure Time Trials DLC.

In a refreshing change of pace, the tutorial doesn't feel painfully remedial. At points, an exclamation prompt will pop up in the corner of the screen, and by pressing F1, new concepts (like wallrunning) present themselves. Or, you can ignore them and forge your own path, which has the potential to be quite addicting with the right emphasis on leaderboards (which Welkin does have, mind) and a focus on complex level design.

Hopefully the controls can get ironed out during development. At the moment, there isn't any form of gamepad support, and one maneuver in particular isn't as responsive as it should be. When running (WASD) and jumping (spacebar), players can use the crouch button (control) to lift their legs up and gain a bit more distance. It's just as awkward as it sounds.

The game isn't entirely a Mirror's Edge homage though, as a Ratchet & Clank Swingshot-esque dual grappling hook gimmick plays a core role. It creates some interesting scenarios, like additional wallrunning opportunities or more open-ended paths. But the central crux of what makes Welkin unique is also its most finicky element. You have to be really close to a grappling point to connect, and the actual thread is woefully short. Unless this is a deliberate choice meant to add to the learning curve, I suspect this will be one of the first things that's altered.

Right now, there are eight levels in all that comprise the "campaign," but there isn't a narrative to truly unite them yet. Based on my early impressions, I see Welkin Road as nothing more than a relaxing diversion, but that may change over time. I'll keep my eye on it.

This Dark Souls tweet perfectly sums up my feelings about Dark Souls III

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 02:00 AM PDT

I'd say I'm pretty much a Dark Souls fanboy at this point. I've played each game in the series long enough to earn all four platinum trophies, and then I kept on playing them for a long time afterwards. And yet, with Dark Souls III on the horizon, all I can think about are the hardships I've faced in the previous entries, and I'm left wondering about the godawful beasts that are going to completely wreck my shit this time around. Am I ready to go through it all again?

The official Dark Souls Twitter account perfectly captured that very feeling with this video they tweeted yesterday. It's glorious.

Romancing SaGa 2 is coming west after over two decades

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 01:00 AM PDT

Romancing SaGa 2 was originally released on the Super Famicom in 1993, and hasn't seen a release outside of Japan to date.

::cue drumroll::

Until now! Square Enix has just announced that the mobile edition of the game (released recently in Japan) is getting a worldwide release "soon." Before you ask "Android version?!" Yes, there's an Android version. There's a Vita version in Japan too, but I doubt we'll get that.

My favorite SaGa game? That honor probably goes to Frontier.

Are you satisfied with the My Nintendo program?

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 11:30 PM PDT

The day finally came -- the replacement for Club Nintendo is live -- My Nintendo. Rather than solely provide users with the bulk of their points from purchases, there's systems in place to provide rewards for checking into Miiverse and the eShop once a week, as well as (35 possible daily) points for playing Miitomo, Nintendo's first mobile app.

Personally, I'm happy with it so far, having amassed 1400 Points in just over a week, which is enough for roughly one and a half free 3DS games. Of course without the massive bonuses in tow my accrual rate will slow over time, but for now, I'm satisfied with it.

So what's the bad news? Well, it seems as if physical rewards are out. In fact, even if there's a "one year Platinum" reward bonus like Club Nintendo has had in the past, I seriously doubt it will be physical, as even that program phased out physical items in its twilight years. Also, points expire in just six months, which isn't ideal.

I want to hear about your experiences with the system though -- whether you've refused to link social accounts and think the reward pipeline is too slow, and so on.

Destiny's creative lead quits Bungie after 13 years

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 10:00 PM PDT

Destiny’s story creative lead is leaving Bungie.

After 13 years with the studio, CJ Cowan announced on Twitter that he had “decided to part ways with Bungie” but did not clarify why he was leaving, or where he was headed.

Cowan started off at Bungie as a cinematic designer for Halo 2, then moved on to become director of cinematics for Halo 3, ODST, and Halo Reach. Most recently, he was story creative lead on Destiny, a role he’s held since just November 2015.

He now states on Instagram that he is a “Seattle Storyteller for hire”.

With a company as big as this, there’s bound to be people coming and going - and Bungie isn’t the only one. Cameron Harris is the latest in a line of high-profile departures from BioWare which include writers Christopher Schlerf and David Gaider, and director Chris Wynn.

Insert your salty comments about “omg, Destiny had a story hur hur hur!” below, my friends. I know you’re just dying to say it...

All the best for your next steps, CJ - and HAPPY FRIDAY all! <3

League of Legends 2016 Interview – Clubs and Crafting

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:44 PM PDT

Answers by:
Arnar Gylfason, Product Manager – League of Legends, Riot Games
Alan Moore, Product Manager – League of Legends, Riot Games

With the arrival of Season 6, I had a chance to question the Product Managers of League of Legends on their new out of game decisions to increase progression and player interest. Namely clubs and the hextech crafting system. With both systems now live and being tested for future updates, I asked Arnar Gylfason and Alan Moore about their thoughts on where these systems were going, and how they could be improved.

Ragachak: First off, could you give a brief rundown of the club system for those who don't know what it is?

Gylfason: Clubs are a way for you to have a persistent, owned space for you and your friends, or other like-minded players. You can also set a tag, which is visible to other players – it's unique to your club to establish a shared identity among the group.

Ragachak: Will/have you considered using clubs to take the place of premade teams for ranked? Will that be a way for people to do ranked with a wider audience of people for a team? Since the current premade team can have 10 people at once, could that be a possibility for the future?

Gylfason: Clubs are kind of a bigger construct than ranked teams. I think in the future there will be exciting competitive experiences for clubs to participate in. Things like intra-club tournaments or scrims, for example, or even some kind of competition between clubs. Because clubs are expected to be larger in size, we expect them in the future to be able to house, or sponsor, multiple teams that participate in those types of competitive experiences.

Ragachak: Have you given thought to allowing players to "run" more than one club? EG: I have one for my stream, but I was going to run my company's club too, but that's not a possibility.

Gylfason: While you're able to join and belong to more than one club, we want to ensure that players are really invested in their clubs in a meaningful way, especially the club owners. That level of investment may prove difficult for someone leading multiple clubs.

Ragachak: What about club ranks, kind of like a guild?

Gylfason: Right now there are three ranks in a club: owner, officer and member. Officers can help owners run, moderate and manage members for their clubs, and can also be the owner of their own, separate club.

The team is looking at the possibility of introducing a progression system into the clubs feature, but as it stands the exact design is to be determined. We'd like to make sure club members get rewarded for playing and doing things together, regardless of the actual activity.

Ragachak: I also have some thoughts on the crafting system. First off, I love it. I really do. But it seems a bit rough to not get anything unless you get an S or better. It's not impossible to get an S, sure, but have you guys discussed making it an A or better? What was the reason behind keeping it at S Rank?

Moore: First, it doesn't have to be a pure S, an S- counts! Ok, maybe not the answer you're hoping for. The easiest trick here is to party up with some others – if anyone in your premade gets S, then you're good.

The reason behind requiring an S grade is that it's legitimately difficult to achieve. An S grade requires you to perform really well using that specific champion and position combo, and we're evaluating you against everyone else who's played that combo in your region. It's not easy, but now it's even more rewarding.

Ragachak: One of the big hurdles that I'm seeing right now is for players who have all the champs [like myself]. So now I have 7 to 8k of the Blue Essence and nothing to do with it, since I'll always have enough IP to buy a Champ outright, and crafting does not guarantee you'll get the new one. Any plans to make a conversion system for essence?

Moore: This is something we're looking to solve. We have a few ideas and I expect that we'll start with one, and then potentially loop back around with some more options later. Right now we're hammering on a design that will unlock prestige levels for Champion Mastery for the champions you already have at level 5.

Ragachak: A very important question: I've seen legacy skins in the crafting system like Viridian Kayle, and Curling Veigar. That's awesome because I'm missing a few legacy skins. How about unavailable skins? PAX Skins, King Bow.. Rammus, etc? Are those potentially available?

Moore: Legacy skins are available in chests. Limited skins aren't because they're typically tied to a particular event and moment in time.

Ragachak: Hextech Annie is now out, requiring a special, rare component, which I think is kind of neat. Is that going to be a trend for "Hextech" or special crafting skins?

Moore: We're honestly not sure what the trends will be. We'll be talking to and consulting with players before we decide on more exclusive items in the crafting system.

Ragachak: Lastly, is there any difference in the contents of a chest earned in battle, and one that you pay for?

Moore: Not at the moment, but we're looking into cool opportunities to create different types of chests.

Ragachak: Thanks so much for your time!
