| Tracer hits Heroes of the Storm on April 19, sadly sans butt pose Posted: 02 Apr 2016 02:24 PM PDT Blizzard has finally shared the release date for Overwatch's Tracer, who is hitting Heroes of the Storm in a crossover event of sorts. Players who pre-order the game on PC will net her on April 19 -- and she'll hit the general public a week later on April 26. As a reminder, she can move and shoot, and unlocks her Heroic ability (ultimate) at level 1. The video below shows off all her alternate colors and skins, as well as her mount. I'm pretty excited to player her myself. Also, I had to laugh at the way Tracer was presented at the Heroes Spring Championship -- think of the children! |
| Are you spoiling Dark Souls III for yourself? Posted: 02 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT The last few days have been agony for me. After it got out that it was possible to download the Japanese version of Dark Souls III with English subtitles and menus, seemingly every YouTuber and streamer in the world has made it their mission to race through the game as fast as possible. As a hopeless fanatic for Dark Souls, it's been difficult to resist the temptation to take a little peek over the past week. I don't want to spoil Dark Souls III for myself. But also, I really want to spoil Dark Souls III for myself. |

On this week's Podtoid, Destructoid's own Patrick Hancock joins the usual suspects to discuss Quantum Break, Cockeyes VR, Final Fantasy XV, and how Darren used Animal Crossing to propose to his wife. We also have an interview with Mark Warburton, an associate producer at Traveler's Tales, the studio behind the LEGO games. If you'd like to tune in just for that, it begins around 00:28:55. |
| This cat-rescue VR game terrifies me Posted: 02 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT We touched on Bandai Namco's VR Zone: Project i Can, noting that it's about to open in Tokyo, but seeing one of its virtual-reality attractions in action is another matter entirely. Players have to save a poor little cat stuck on a wooden plank dangling over the edge of a skyscraper. While wearing an HTC Vive, they'll walk across a board in real life to better match the virtual experience and freak their bodies the eff out. Based on the reactions in this video, job well done. If I couldn't handle walking on a glass floor high up in Toronto's CN Tower, I doubt I could do this, but I'd love to try. |
| Red Faction: Guerrilla is the best open-world game ever and if you disagree you are wrong Posted: 02 Apr 2016 09:00 AM PDT
Most sandbox games treat their open worlds like pornographic films treat story. Despite the fact that games like Assassin’s Creed or Grand Theft Auto bill themselves as sandbox experiences, the actual open-world activities -- the stuff that’s supposed to justify the need to schlep across dozens of city blocks to get anywhere that matters -- are usually half-hearted, obligatory affairs. Collect these feathers (for no reason). Rob a convenience store (for no benefit). There are The Quests -- linear missions that actually had effort put into them, the stuff that you are actually there for -- and The Open World itself. Tooling around Los Santos won’t change damn near anything about your experience in the Grand Theft Auto V's story missions, and, apart from a few unnecessary weapon upgrades, farting around in a historical animus recreation has nothing to do with your plot-mandated assassination missions. There are very, very few open-world games that actually wring meaningful gameplay out of their sandbox environments. But of those that do, Red Faction: Guerrilla is the absolute best. |
| The wonderful Maldita Castilla headed to consoles Posted: 02 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT I have a special spot in my heart for Locomalito. For years, the independent designer has been putting out great freeware games in his spare time, including Hydorah, Maldita Castilla, L'Abbaye des Morts, and The Curse of Issyos. Those first two are especially worth seeking out. Do it. Right now. It's a pleasant surprise, then, to hear that some of the developer's titles are coming to consoles thanks to a partnership with Abylight Studios. Maldita Castilla is up first with a Q3 2016 launch. Speaking with Destructoid, a representative of Abylight said that "all major platforms" are being considered for the ports. "Game Maker, the engine in which the games have been developed, supports almost all them and we are in talks to see what can we do for the ones that are not." I wondered about the pricing, given the donation-supported model used for the original PC versions of these titles, and was told "Locomalito is still developing the new levels and until the game is fully finished we won't be able to get a sense of the right pricing." As for what will come next after Maldita Castilla, and when, that's unclear. Abylight says it is looking at "every title" in the portfolio and that "another release this year might be too tight." | Very bad news: It doesn't sound like Danny DeVito will be Detective Pikachu Posted: 02 Apr 2016 07:30 AM PDT I'm sorry to have to crush all our hopes and dreams, but it looks like Danny DeVito most likely won't be voicing Detective Pikachu if the game is ever localized in English. At an event in LA yesterday, DeVito was asked if he was aware of fans wanting him to voice Detective Pikachu to which he responded, "No. I don't know what you're talking about" before asking his fellow It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia cast members, "What the fuck is Pokémon?" Devastating. But part of me wants to believe that he is just playing dumb because of an NDA with Nintendo. The rest of me realizes that DeVito is 71 years old and very well may be telling the truth and has no idea about the popular Nintendo franchise. Maybe we should turn our hopes towards Matthew McConaughey?

| Review: Sumo Omni Plus Bean Bag Posted: 02 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT Have you ever wanted a giant bean bag chair shaped more like a pillow intended for a mythical giant? Do you wish your furniture could be mashed into different shapes and sizes like Play-Doh? Then you might want to consider the Omni Plus Bean Bag by Sumo. |
| This could be our first look at Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay Posted: 02 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT Some very naughty person uploaded the above video to YouTube that was quickly pulled by a copyright claim from EA, but not before someone could mirror it. The video looks to be showcasing a few graphical techniques used in the upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda. Things of interest include the Krogan race still being alive and kicking, a fancy jetpack, and a hot dude that very well may be the lead character. Obviously, take this with a grain of salt. The original posting occurred on April Fools' Day, and when copyright claiming videos, you can put down any name you'd like so just because 'EA' pulled this one doesn't mean it is confirmed to be real. |
| The Silent Hill Retrospective: Shattered Memories Posted: 02 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT Shattered Memories opens with a perfect family moment captured on VHS. A young girl proclaims undying love for her father, before the tape stops, rewinds, and replays the scene again. The repetition continues until that warm feeling in your heart sinks uneasily down to your gut. Love is many things in Shattered Memories and not all of them are good. Told from a psychiatrist's couch, Shattered Memories delved into an idealised past in order to make sense of the present. All stories are based in personal truths, and while Harry Mason’s reimagined journey was yet another psychological nail-biter, the fright-and-flight antics and supernatural horrors couldn't keep those obscured mementos buried in the ice forever. |
| Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII is coming west this summer Posted: 02 Apr 2016 03:30 AM PDT Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII is coming west in July, Koei Tecmo has announced. The strategy game will be the first entry in the series to be localized for western audiences in eight years, the last being Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI for PlayStation 2 in 2007 and PC in 2008. Based on Luo Guanzhong's historical novel of the same name, Romance of the Three Kingdoms allows players to take on the role of more than 700 historical figures during the fall of ancient China's Han dynasty, the ensuing civil war, and subsequent reunification period. The franchise, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, also gave rise to the Dynasty Warriors series, where Koei Tecmo explores the same conflict from a closer, more arcadey perspective. The title will be released across North America on July 5 and Europe on July 8 for PS4 and PC. Last fall, Koei Tecmo released the similar Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence, which is set in Japan's Sengoku period, for PS4, PC, and PS3. You find our review of the game right here. |
| This PS4 theme makes it rain and I can't look away Posted: 02 Apr 2016 01:00 AM PDT
The best thing I came across on April Fools' Day was this new PlayStation 4 theme, "100 Dollar Bills HD 3d Dynamic Theme," but it's no joke. It joins the ranks of totally ridiculous, totally for sale animated themes someone out there keeps buying, ensuring that the suppliers keep supplying. It's "only" $3.49. Any takers? There's even a little diamond icon! Seeing it in motion sent me down a rabbit hole, much like last year's trip through the thousands of funny PSN avatars that we had a good laugh about. I was quick to pull myself out this time, but I did learn this gaudy PS4 theme isn't the first to make it rain -- there's also "The money dynamic theme." Both were produced by separate entities, and both flaunt perfect five-star ratings. On the other hand, Sony's lax attitude means we also get gems like Corn Love: [Via Wario64] |
| It's still super early, but hey, it's Bloodstained in action Posted: 02 Apr 2016 12:00 AM PDT Taking a break from sharing shaders and the like, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night's Koji Igarashi has something else for this backer update: footage of the game for our prying eyes! It includes Miriam wielding a katana, kicking, and running around a work-in-progress "grid map" used for testing. "It's actually very rare to be able to see this," says Iga, "but I wanted to share it with my Kickstarter backers." While it might not look like much, the designers use this type of map to "check the stage size, scrolling connections, figure out where to place enemies, things like that." Early and placeholder-filled as this stuff is, it has me in the mood for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which I know you know Koji Igarashi helped bring to life. The game recently joined the Xbox One's backward compatibility list, so it's been top-of-mind for me all week. Bloodstained is targeting a March 2017 release. Godspeed, Inti Creates and Armature. March Update: Miriam—and IGA—in Motion [Kickstarter -- Thanks, Jonathan] |
| PSA: You can pick up Jirachi for free this month in Pokemon Posted: 01 Apr 2016 05:00 PM PDT Following up Mew in February and Celebi in March, Nintendo is moving on to Jirachi for its 20th anniversary Pokémon distribution event. From now until April 24 you'll be able to snag the legendary...floating thing through copies of Pokémon ORAS or X & Y. Thank goodness this one doesn't involve going to a GameStop (though Darkrai next month will), as players simply need to get it through the Mystery Gift option. Truth be told I've never really been big on Jirachi, but hey, I'll take it. |
