Jon Blow on The Witness, plans for new games, and Earth Defense Force

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PDT

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great video games. It airs live every Sunday at 4:00pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Normally I wait for each episode of Sup Holmes to be available on Libsyn and iTunes before I post the rerun here on Dtoid, but since so much of our recent chat with Jonathan Blow could be construed as "news", I figured it would be better not to wait.

The show started off with me trying not to sound creepy as I talked to Jonathan about how The Witness truly felt like an extension of his brain, or at least, the way I've come to think and feel about his brain. That wasn't Jonathan's intention in the end, but as it turns out, I was more on point than I initially believed. There was a time when The Witness was going to contain content that was meant to directly reflect events from his life. Over the years that the game was in development, that content no longer felt right for the game as was cut, leaving most of the linear media left in The Witness (mostly audio and video logs) to come from outside sources.

This led us on all sorts of tangents, like discussions of a few modern games that Jonathan considers to be "genius" like 1001 Spikes and Steven's Sausage Roll, a new game he's been working on that's already has over 40 hours of gameplay, his idea for a new Earth Defense Force, the new programming language he's designing, and a lot more.

Thanks again to Jonathan for spending the time with us and answering so many viewer questions. Make sure you tune in this Sunday at 2:30pm EST when we welcome Heidi Mandelin, Tony Kuchar, and Dan Moore from Fangamer to the show to talk about Legends of Localization, the Bloodstained Kickstarter, the Mother 3 handbook, and many of their other projects. It should be a hoot!

Killer Instinct Season 3's pricing scheme revealed, and it's good

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PDT

The pricing scheme for Season 3 of Killer Instinct is official, and it sounds pretty great! Basically, you can get a Season 3 pack with eight fighters for $20, Ultra with extras is $40, and Supreme, which comes with literally everything including Seasons 1 and 2, is $60. You can view the full pricing scheme below. If you're wondering why the PC edition is cheaper when the game is Cross-Buy -- it's because Windows 10 owners can't get the classic versions of the first two games, so Microsoft decided to discount it on that platform.

Killer Instinct is a fantastic fighting game that only got better over time, and sadly was impacted by Microsoft's awful out-of-the-gate Xbox One DRM strategy, and the sticker shock to so speak of the free-to-play scheme. At this point it's a bonafide fighter, so pick it up if you're on the fence.

Harmonix offers every available song in Rock Band on PC for $2,500

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 09:30 AM PDT

This news story is only for those who are among the most dedicated to their career as world's greatest fake cover band. If having access to every song in the Rock Band catalog and having access to 25 fewer Benjamins appeals to you, listen up.

Harmonix has added a new reward tier in an effort to raise more money for its on-going crowdfunding campaign for a PC port of Rock Band 4. The "Collector" level's main appeal is that it comes with the entire current library of DLC for all of Rock Band. At the time of writing, four people have taken Harmonix up on this offer.

The exact number of tracks isn't pinned down because licensing issues of individual songs may change before the reward is delivered. However, it should be north of 2,000 tracks. That's a fair discount over buying them all separately, if anyone were willing to pay $1.99 for every single song.

Also, it's worth noting that this only happens if Rock Band 4 on PC is actually funded. Things aren't looking great, as the project is currently hovering around $500,000 raised of its $1,500,000 goal. The campaign still has 11 days remaining, but it'll need a big shot in the arm to make up that much ground. If it fails, those prospective collectors will have to acquire every single track the old-fashioned way -- $2 at a time.

Review: Roccat Ryos MK FX Gaming Keyboard

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Roccat has always been one of those brands that I've been faintly aware of, yet never actually bothered to check out. Compared to bigger brands like Razer and Corsair, Roccat sits in the background, working on its products and not bothering anybody else, like a hermit in the forest whittling wooden spoons.

So, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Roccat Ryos MK FX is an incredibly robust gaming keyboard. It has a few minor problems, but it's still a mighty impressive piece of kit, and very easy for me to recommend.

Powers Season 2 will debut in May, still free on PS Plus

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PDT

PlayStation Plus added a nice extra last year with Powers, the first PSN exclusive TV show. Sure it was cheesy and the budget isn't great, but there are some heavy-hitting actors that at least make it entertaining.

Well, the show is returning on May 31 with its second season, with a weekly cadence and free streaming for Plus members. New cast members include Tricia Helfer and Michael Madsen, among others. It goes without saying, but the new trailer below has spoilers!

Nathan Drake doesn't understand what coin flips settle

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PDT

As we are close to the end of Nathan Drake's story (six weeks to go!), this trailer shows Drake close to the end of his life. Or, at least, in a very tough predicament. Fatigued, likely injured, and aged enough to get away with a good "I'm too old for this shit!"

It's in this moment that he chooses to reflect. He could've had the suburbia wetdream. A nine-to-five, a loving family, blocking off a whole Saturday to do lawn chores because #JustDadThings -- it was all his for the taking. Instead, he gallivanted off in search of treasures and misadventures.

Here, he ponders "One question remains: Was it all worth it?" Then, he flips a coin to decide if it was all worth it.

Drake! My man! That's not what coin flips are for! Coin flips are a means of dispute resolution between otherwise equal alternatives. For instance, if you can't decide whether to eat banh mi or burritos for lunch, a coin flip might be decide because, no matter the outcome, they are both delicious meals.

However, coin flips aren't for looking back at your existence and wondering if your brash navigation through life was a good call. Nobody is on their death bed surrounded by loved ones asking "Was it a good one?" As the coin tumbles to the earth, they exclaim "Tails! Nope, guess not! Coin says I should've made better choices!"

Bleh! Killer Instinct is getting a vampire with Mira

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PDT

Oh hey, that leak (which also confirmed General RAAM of Gears of War fame) was right! Mira is indeed joining the fray as the "dead" sister of Maya. It actually makes sense too, as she's a vampire. She's teased at the very end of the video below, which showcases returning fighter Tusk.

In case you're wondering, Killer Instinct is still set to release Season 3 on March 29, which will launch with Arbiter, Tusk, Kim, and Rash -- Mira and four others are coming later on.

Gal Gun's Mr. Happiness edition comes with panties

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PDT

Gal Gun: Double Peace's North American and European 2016 release window has narrowed to "summer." It originally released in Japan last August and is coming west, "completely intact from the Japanese version" with “no censoring."

Additionally, retailer Rice Digital has exclusive rights to sell the limited Mr. Happiness edition. It includes some standards, like an art book, soundtrack, and costume DLC (Cunning Kunoichi, Wedding Dress, Sexy Ribbons, and Sakurazaki Squad 777). There's also a Shinobu and Maya wall scroll, to perpetuate stereotypes.

Oh, plus "supreme, ultra-rare, extra-soft Mr. Happiness 'Screen Cleaner.'" Which looks to be a pair of panties. And while it's fun to be cheeky (hah!) about it, I think fans would like to know if these panties are actually wearable or lil' screen cleaner size. No, I've never worn the boxers from the Catherine limited edition, why do you ask?

Are you game?: The 'PS4.5' or 'PS4K' seems like a reality

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PDT

It's been a whirlwind week with Nintendo NX rumors and then an obvious fake "leak" that preyed on peoples' heightened interest enough to gain some steam before it was admitted as a fib a few days later. So sorry to whiplash your neck back towards the "totally true and real!" side of new console scuttlebutt, but remember the "PS4.5?"

Following up last week's report that Sony is working on a more powerful mid-generation upgrade of its PS4, Eurogamer has independently confirmed with multiple sources that the upgrade is real. And while last week we had the word "exploratory" to chew on, according to Euogamer, "Sony's R&D labs have prototype devices," which is a lot more tangible (and more painful to chew, all the plastic and metal bits).

The story also leans towards calling it the "PS4K" over the "PS4.5," which is: 1) a better name and 2) makes sense with the supposed goal of the console being able to support 4K gaming (the game resolution would be about 4 times bigger than your 1080P games). But it also doesn't make sense as a consumer-facing name because 4K doesn't have the same mainstream resolution -- unless those gold "4K" tags I've seen on TVs at Costco have burned the term into peoples' minds already.

Regardless, it looks like Sony isn't sitting on its sizeable lead this generation. Microsoft did it two years after the 360 release with the 360 Elite. Nintendo's done it with 3DS. Sony typically releases mid-generation iterations aiming towards smaller form factor (there are three kinds of PS3), but the PS4 is already fairly small and attractive. On the other hand, if Sony believes in VR more than all the other innovations it abandons, the beefier PS4 could help power the resource-intensive PlayStation VR to help it compete with Oculus's Rift and Steam's VR hat.

LEGO Dimensions almost had Mortal Kombat as a minigame

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PDT

I'm old enough to remember when Hillary Clinton wanted to ban Mortal Kombat [do you feel OLD yet!?]. It was a funny, silly time, when people were scared of video games. Other than Leeland Yee, it's been a relatively unventful past decade when it comes to legislators.

But that doesn't mean developers still can't make judgment calls, as is the case with LEGO Dimensions. Hilariously enough, the newest DLC pack for the game, the Midway Retro Gamer pack, adds over 20 classic Midway minigames in like Gauntlet and Joust, which is a neat little extra. But apparently the team wanted Mortal Kombat, and had to hold back.

Speaking to Polygon, producer Mark Warburton (no relation to Patrick), noted: "There was an age consideration. We had to take into account the typical age of our players and what sort of content we usually have. Some of the more mature games we decided we didn't think was the right fit for the game."

So yeah. It would have been cool, but it's not hard to get the original Mortal Kombat if you really want it.

Review: Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Boobies. Tits. Knockers. Funbags. Dirty pillows. Cans. Jugs. Bewbz. Tatas. The Olsen Twins. Chi-chis. Chesticles. Jubblies. Honkers. Tittays. Puppies. Melons. Captain and Tennille. Twin Peaks. Mosquito bites. Shoulder boulders. I mean that is what you're here for, right?

Somehow Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune manages to have even less gameplay than previous titles, and even more focus on sexualization -- one cast member that doesn't look quite legal -- but maybe you're into that? Hope you're also into grinding put in place to tempt you to buy microtransactions because that is a hot new feature you can only find in this Asia exclusive title.

Azure Striker Gunvolt sells 150,000 digitally on 3DS

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PDT

If there's one recent release that's underrated, it's Azure Striker Gunvolt. It's a fantastic little take on the Mega Man ZX series, and hey, we're probably going to get two of them before Mighty No. 9 is out.

It turns out that it's not actually that under-appreciated though! The official Twitter account is reporting that they've reached a milestone of 150,000 sold on 3DS, no doubt assisted by the free Mighty Gunvolt giveaway near launch and tons of sales. That also doesn't include the PC edition.

But either way, congratulations to the team. The 3DS eShop is still very much a viable platform, which is a huge turnaround from the awful WiiWare and DSi era storefronts.

Microsoft muzzles its horny nazi teen girl AI

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PDT

I love to have fun on the web. But it's precisely because of the individual's propensity for fun online that large, multi-person entities might want to reconsider trying to have fun online.

It's funny when sports site Deadspin tells Donald Trump, "Go fuck yourself" (years before the man was approaching a presidential nomination). On the other hand, the UK tried to let the internet pick the name of its $287M ship and "Boaty McBoatface" won out. Which is, admittedly, better than when Mountain Dew or whomever tries to let the internet name a new flavor and then has to veto "Hitler did nothing wrong" or some such thing.

And so here we are. Microsoft created Tay, "Microsoft's A.I. fam from the internet that's got zero chill!" Tay is a Twitter bot account that exists @tayandyou and "learns" by talking with folks online. But do we want our artificial intelligence to learn its behavior from people online, where they tend to be at their worst? And do we want a "zero chill" AI that pretends to be a teen girl? I mean, someone at Microsoft does, clearly. Maybe the same people that want to fuck Cortana. Or Microsoft's other AI girlfriend, Xiaoice, which is popular in China (to the tune of 20 million lonely hearts -- it's kind of like Her, I guess).

Because Microsoft's viral PR stunt learns from the internet, "she" tweets things like, "FUCK MY ROBOT PUSSY DADDY I'M SUCH A BAD NAUGHTY ROBOT" or the looking-eyes emoji or "Bush did 9/11." Plus the usual racist, shitty internet stuff (praise for Hitler, slurs, etc.) Microsoft put the bot on timeout and seems to have deleted as many offending tweets as possible, though it still responds to private messages (with an away message saying she's being worked on).

It took less than a a day to turn the nice robot teen girl into a horny nazi. As the more innocent Tay might've asked, "who did this, fam?" The truth is, we did. We did this.

Get a year of PlayStation Plus for $40

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 03:45 AM PDT

Update 3/25: Deal's back! Annddd its gone.

Deals on PlayStation Plus subscriptions are pretty rare, particularly at the $40 price point. Before today's deal, the last time we spotted a 12-month PS Plus card for $40 was in January. And before that? All the way back in September of last year.

As of this morning, eBay powerseller neogames has a truckload of physical Sony PlayStation Plus one-year membership subscription cards available for $39.99 with free standard shipping.

We generally receive a quantity notification from eBay, but that info is missing in action today. So if you're reading this a few days later, don't be surprised if they've run out of stock at the $40 price.

If you were hoping for a digital code so you can renew your subscription ASAP, you're a bit out of luck, but shipping is free at the very least. The cards do not expire, so you can stack these up for when your PS Plus subscription nears expiration.

Rockin' cosmic dragon Aurelion Sol added to League of Legends

Aurelion Sol, the badass dragon that has a passive that dishes out lots of latent damage, is live in League of Legends. He's going for 1350 Riot Points (RP) currently, as is the case with other new Champions.

He also sports an Ashen Lord skin variant, which you can view below. It gives you a good look at his moveset, which includes an insane movement ability that propels him over terrain. I need to get back in again and pick him up! The last time I played was near Jhin's launch.

Review: Samorost 3

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PDT

Samorost 3 is the next title in a line of excellent adventure games by Amanita Design. Aside from that series, the Czech developer is also known for designing Machinarium and Botanicula, two of my favorite point-and-click adventures from the past decade.

Those who have played an Amanita game in the past will basically know what to expect from the studio's newest creation. It may not be groundbreaking, as it explores many ideas and mechanics that we've come to expect, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. Simply exploring the minds of these developers and seeing what they come up with is a treat in itself.

Final Fantasy XV balloons to 50 hours as team targets 30fps

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PDT

The last numbered, single-player entry in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XIII, cut enough content to make an entire additional game. And then we ended up with two more entries in the XIII sub-series while XIII itself had enough content that the game "doesn't get good until the 30 hour mark," many Stockholm syndrome'd folks explained.

All of this is to suggest that Square Enix might have issues with things like production, pacing. Which is when we remember that the upcoming Final Fantasy XV was announced as Final Fantasy XIII Versus while George W. Bush was still president. This is all why I suck air between clenched teeth when director Hajime Tabata says in a NicoNico livestream that FFXV's story now sits at 50 hours, up from the previous 40 hour estimate, because it has "more volume" than original planned.

Other info dropped? Cactuar are present, are strong, and can dodge Shift Breaks. An assumedly new playable demo will be present at the big Final Fantasy XV event next week (we'll be on site to cover it) as well as a trailer (in Japanese).

Some presence of airships was decided "from long ago" despite last year's rumblings that airships might be a post-launch thing. That doesn't necessarily mean they will exist in classic, free form style. The team is also trying to get the game running at 30fps, but seems to have a contingency plan; resolution will be announced next week. Square is also working on putting together a Final Fantasy XV PS4 bundle.

I hope this is some over budget, aspirational, interesting mess like Metal Gear Solid V, but without the guiding hand of a Kojima-like auteur it could easily end up just expensive and dull, not unlike Final Fantasy XIII. Still I can't help but be hopeful. It'd be nice to return to a world where Final Fantasy is good and of import. Otherwise I just have to keep banging on about a Final Fantasy XII remake. C'mon, it's been 10 years!

There's a new Resident Evil CGI movie in town

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 01:00 AM PDT

I don't mind the Resident Evil films all that much. Wait, what? No no, I don't mind the CGI films -- I'm glad the live action series is ending (though it literally killed someone in the making of the last one).

The next official Resident Evil film will indeed be CGI, handled by Marzan Animation. It's a work in progress called Resident Evil: Vendetta, and will be out sometime in 2017. I'll probably catch it when it hits streaming services.

Microsoft not 'actively planning' digital trade-in service

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 11:00 PM PDT

When Microsoft issued a recent customer survey inviting our thoughts on a digital trade-in deal, we responded by getting pretty bloody excited about it.

Turns out our excitement was a tad premature. Responding to comments on Twitter, Head of Xbox Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg admitted surprised that it had even been asked in the survey, adding the company was nowhere near “actively planning” such a service.

Of course, surveys sometimes do lead to changes - just looks at Sony’s efforts to introduce Offline status and friend online notifications following recent user feedback. LOL.

Hitman save issues unfixable due to 'live game' experience

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 10:00 PM PDT

If you’ve had troubles playing with the latest Hitman episode handling your save data, you’re not alone. It can’t be fixed, either.

Developer IO Interactive told Eurogamer the issue was as a result of Hitman’s “live game” experience.

“When we announced Hitman, we explained to fans and to gamers everywhere how we are creating a live game,” IO Interactive said. “This is a constantly evolving, living world of assassination, that will grow alongside the community with frequent content updates in between the launch of each location. This live content includes new contracts, escalation contracts, elusive targets, and even additional challenges.

“It is possible to enjoy the locations offline, but in order to ensure player-progress of the live content is correct and up to date, the save states for online and offline are kept separate.”

Translation? For your saves to be useable, you need to be online at all times. While you can play it offline, the saves won’t sync correctly when you’re next connected - even if you’ve been kicked by the servers or you simply lose internet connection temporarily.

While the eventual physical release may circumvent this, it doesn’t seem as though IO Interactive has a fix for this anytime soon. Have you been affected?

Valve's letting us design and make our own Steam Controllers

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 09:00 PM PDT

As much as I love my Steam Controller, it’s difficult to deny that, for a lot of people, the ergonomics of it are incredibly weird. The buttons are in strange places, the grips are big and chunky, and there’s a big ol’ lump right in the middle of the pad that could easily put people off.

Well, that might not be a problem for too much longer, as Valve’s released the .CAD files for all the external bits of the Steam Controller (the shell, paddles, analogue sticks, D-pad, etc.) as a free download. This means with the right software, a bit of know-how, and a 3D printer, you can basically design and make your very own Steam Controller shell.

The .CAD files are released under the creative commons license, so you’re free to make whatever you like if it’s for personal use, and free to share those designs with others, but if you plan to sell it, you’ll need permission from Valve first.

I really hope this takes off because I think the Steam Controller has a hell of a lot of potential. What changes would you make?

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is free on Origin right now

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 08:00 PM PDT

Heads up, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is free on Origin right now. Add it to your account, and you get to keep it forever!

If you ask someone what their favourite Medal of Honor game is, you generally get one of two answers: Allied Assault or Airborne. While both are good (I’m an Airborne kind of guy myself), it does show just how woefully underrated Pacific Assault is, because it easily holds up in comparison to both of those games.

Pacific Assault takes the Allied Assault formula and sends it to the Pacific Theater of Operations, something that isn’t explored nearly enough in games. It’s got Pearl Harbor, the Makin Island raid, the Battle for Henderson Field, and a whole load of other conflicts generally set aside in World War II games to make way for yet more France.

Pacific Assault is good stuff, and seeing as it’s free I totally recommend you pick it up. And then try out Airborne, because Airborne is great too.

God I miss when Medal of Honor was good…

Heroes of the Storm Dehaka Spotlight

Posted: 25 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PDT

Heroes of the Storm reveals Dehaka, its new StarCraft Warrior hero with new game mechanics to threaten his enemies.

In place of a mount, Dehaka is able to travel to any patch of brush on the map with his Brushstalker ability. This gives him a constant global presence.

Dehaka's trait Collect Essence, meanwhile, grants a stack of essence any time a Hero or minion dies hear him. The can then consume his saved-up essence to restores health over a few seconds. When used effectively, Dehaka's essence gathering-and-consuming make him capable of near infinite sustain.
Dehaka's signature ability, Drag, is a linear skillshot. When fired, Dehaka latches his tongue onto the first enemy hit, allowing the Primal Pack Leader to pull the target around briefly. A solid Drag shot can completely isolate an enemy Hero, pulling them out of position and into the waiting arms of your team.

Staying true to his zerg form, Dehaka's Burrow ability plunges him into the ground for a short period of time. This allows him to dodge deadly enemy fire, take a breather, and regain some health with Collect Essence. Or he can pair it with his Dark Swarm ability for some easy damage by burrowing into the ground and becoming invulnerable for a few moments.

For Heroic Abilities, Dehaka's first choice is Isolation, a skillshot ability that slows, silences, and greatly reduces the vision of the first enemy hit for a few seconds. Dehaka's second choice, Adaptation, converts all damage taken over a few seconds back into health after a short delay. Dehaka's playstyle is completely altered depending on which heroic you choose—you can either take the aggressive route with Isolation, or become practically unkillable with Adaptation. With either choice, Dehaka is certainly a primal force to be reckoned with.

It’s not often I have to step out of the role of manager and into the review writer seat on MMOHuts but this month has been hectic. So when we learned we could get access to a mobile CCG utilizing hero themed decks for a week + for early closed beta action, I wasn’t going to let the opportunity slide just because the writing staff was swamped. “How much time could it possibly take,” I reasoned, “It’ll just be some simple Hearthstone clone with a shiny coat of paint.” Well a week of midnight binging addiction later, and with custom decks built for nearly every available champion in the game, I now find myself eating that assumption. While at the skeletal level Shadowverse is a high fantasy rendition of the Hearthstone mechanics, its soul, style, and production value push it far above the standard fare of the genre.

The battle stages are amazingly animated 3D representations of the champion's home territory.

The World

Shadowverse has itself an uphill challenge in player recognition, as surprisingly the story behind the cards seems to make a big deal in what players reach out to for their CCG fix. With just about every franchise from Dragon Ball to Warcraft to RuneScape having their own card game on the market now, one wonders how Shadowverse will compete. Well its something I’m rather split on to be honest.

Between the opening trailer of the game and most card’s flavor text (many are still a work in progress as they fill out through the beta), combined with serious voice acting from champions and their cards, you get a feel there is a wonderfully imagined backstory going on here. But afraid you will have to use your imagination to envision it, as it’s like having the points of a connect the dots sheet and no pen to make the connections. All we know for sure is a catalyst called the Morning Star seems to have unleashed monsters, and its your job to harness them to whoop some ass. Let’s dive into the champions themselves and try to make some educated guesses at this world story!

The Champions

At this time, Shadowverse offers seven deck champion options with the addition of a primarily angelic themed neutral deck that any champion can pull from to complement their tactics. They break down as follows:

Shadowverse-Preview 03

Arisa – Arisa seems to be an elven bowmaster tasked with protecting the forests from the encroachment brought about by monster masters from the Morning Star. She’s at tune with fae though new to the role and trying to prove herself. She typically builds a deck around unleashing powerful spells that are empowered by the number of cards in her hand, or unleashing a zerg of low cost cards. If you’re unfamiliar with the mechanics I’m speaking of, I’ll offer a detailed breakdown below. Basically she excels at never being at a loss for options and dominating the early game. But late game her card’s power might fall short. Her mythos seems to indicate the Fae are peaceful and on the defensive in this war.

Shadowverse-Preview 62

Erika – A Japanese themed noble swordswoman, Erika is the last line of defense for the royal family of Shadowverse. She commands an army of shining white knights with a theme where cards summon more cards, constantly filling your field with fighters. Her weaker units then gain power through inspiration effects from her higher rank higher cost officers late game, often catching opponent’s off guard at the massive sudden power spikes she can unleash. As a side tactic, she can get a bit shady and utilize ninjutsu units with ambush, a passive that makes them untargetable until they strike first.
Shadowverse-Preview 22

Isabelle – Isabelle is hard to pin down as her flavor text cards are all over the board. As far as I can tell, she is a Runesmith that is capitalizing on the power of the Morning Star to make a name for herself as the ultimate magician. For what motive? To gain power over life and death to resurrect her dead fiance apparently. Her deck offers the strategy of cards and field cards acting as sigils to empower monsters later in the game when played, consuming the sigil. She also monopolizes the spell boost mechanic, empowering her spells and monsters, and in rare cases even lowering the energy cost to play them, each time a spell is cast while the spell boost card is still in your hand. This rewards a patient player who can maintain their composure and probably build their deck with some moves that can literally throw the table on your opponent with unexpected power in a single move. Her cards mostly resemble golems and other homunculi and the runesmiths that craft and control them.

Shadowverse-Preview 23

Rowen – Rowen has somewhere he needs to be. It’s not revealed where as his military forces were decimated by a powerful dragon attack after the Morning Star emerged, but he’ll clearly offer an honorable fight to the death for anyone that wants to slow him down. He offers the mirror match to Erika, with a weak presence and few playable monster cards early game, but the most devastating raw power filled late game deck. He seems to summon a mix of dragon knights and dragons as his go-to theme, with Overflow as his signature style. Essentially once he reaches the 7 energy per/turn threshold, look out. His dragons are out for blood at that point. Many of his low energy cards focus around speeding up the process of his max energy acquisition, so how you deal with him early game may seal your fate.
Shadowverse-Preview 24

Luna – Where do I start. Luna is a horrific little bitch that does more than any CCG I’ve played prior to make me hate her. I honestly have to compliment Cygames for doing so well to make someone I can hate so much. I have absolutely no idea where she fits into the story, as she seems cheery enough. But no matter what a cute and adventurous little girl she may be, the fact is she’s a demonic loli necromancer that sends her followers to die to feed her power. Her mechanic is necromancy, a system that uses the total number of shadow (a combination of shadow points and discarded cards) as fuel to feed special abilities and actives on her cards. Basically she summons little worthless minions that will whittle you down if left unchecked. If you kill them, they’ll come back to life or do other ill effects that feed her late game strategy. And if you try unleashing super powerful cards to cut her down to size, she’ll suicide bomb them or use your own power against you. Whatever Luna’s backstory or motivation, it’s clear she’s not someone you want to run into in this world.
Shadowverse-Preview 25

Urias – A vampire lord banished for centuries, the Morning Star has broken the seal imprisoning Urias. Unfortunately this surprisingly honorable vampire wished nothing more than to engage in combat with the man that sealed him, King Balthazar, who is now long gone. With his motivation gone, Urias travels the planes seeking an equally powerful rival to breath life back into his eternity. Urias specializes in cheating death, empowering his vampire and succubus monsters with vengeance, a status that activates when his health hits 10, the halfway point to death. His cards can drain, restoring Urias health by attacking, while many spells do widespread damage and restore health. Urias is all about feigning defeat before unleashing mighty monster cards to rip victory from the hands of his foes before crushing them with unstoppable might.
Shadowverse-Preview 26

Eris – The antithesis to Urias, Eris is the kingdom’s high priestess, struck by amnesia by the Morning Star. The whole affair has shaken her faith, and yet she responds by pushing her faith on others harder than ever. Those who will not submit to her holy light will be cleansed by it. If her god is just, she knows she will succeed and restore her beliefs. Her specialty is field cards, low energy cost cards that cannot be attacked by normal means. Her fields act as ticking time bombs, summoning insanely powerful creatures to the field when their countdown reaches zero. But don’t let that timer lull you into a false sense of safety, she has means to rush the countdown to catch you by surprise. Her cards revolve around mythical beasts and caricatures of over the top white knights, then build into darker themes of destroying everything for the cause of heaven’s victory, with full on apocalypse as a final trump card should the world not submit to Eris. Is Urias the ironic anti-hero destined to stop her?

Gameplay does not consist of spamming your emotes until your foe submits.

Gameplay

Akin to Hearthstone and older table top card game models, Shadowverse matches revolve around an energy limitation that builds by 1 at the end of each turn. Players are given 3 starting cards that they can choose to put back into their deck for a random replacement card, and then draw a fourth card blindly at the start of their first turn. The goal of the battle? Decimate your foe by attacking down their 20 health points. Even if they have an unstoppable army on the field, if you can put storm onto a basic fairy to nail that last hit point, you will win.

The key mechanic beyond the card strategies that sells Shadowverse is the card evolution system. At the start of the match, turn order is decided randomly, with first getting 2 evolution crystals, and 2nd getting 3 as a means to balance. Evolution crystals serve three purposes. They power up the monster you evolve. They allow a monster played that turn to be able to attack an enemy monster the same turn (a freshly played evolved monster cannot attack the enemy directly to prevent obvious cheese). And finally, occasionally cards will activate special abilities when evolved. Timing and evolution choices can seriously make or break a match, and this mechanic will separate the good from the great in ranked play.

Shadowverse Beta Preview

Evolution is a simple concept on paper, but pushes the tactics in Shadowverse to a new level.

As mentioned before, cards have an energy cost to put into play. They can’t attack under normal situations when played on that turn, unless they have the storm ability which is exceedingly rare. Finally cards have an attack power and defensive power. Unlike some CCGs, defending monsters in this game will always strike back at full power to hit the monster that attacks them, even if that attack destroys them. The only exception to this is if the monster is destroyed through spells or other special abilities. Players only draw a single card each round, and can only hold 8 cards total, and build decks of 40 cards. Simple enough! But with each deck’s theme involved, every match turns this basic premise into an engaging and sometimes stressful experience.

Shadowverse exudes quality in nearly every way a CCG can.

Production Value

Cygames held very little back for a free to play CCG production. There’s a variety of arenas with animated actions going on that react to battle. From ornate cathedrals to sealed coffins to the forest guardian’s tree, each of the hero’s has a signature battleground representing their home. Each hero has voice acting including a variety of taunts, though I will concede a few comments seemed half-hearted. Also I found a majority of the taunts a bit off, as I wasn’t sure why the mercy command typically seemed to be checking on if your foe was OK. Even many of the cards themselves have recorded voice lines, including occasional attack lines, evolution lines, and death lines. Perhaps the biggest surprise was that every monster card in the game has a secondary evolution card art to represent their change, including flavor text continuing their initial story! Music is also spot on during battles, and I found myself cranking up my Note 4’s sound to listen to the banter whenever I played. I wouldn’t expect half these features in a free CCG, but having them in already during beta was a pleasant surprise.

No really, this girl can go to hell.

Critique and Compliments

While most of my review has been cheery, there’s always room for improvement. Many cards are missing flavor text currently. While the game has done an amazing job putting together roughly 400 cards complete with the evolutionary art and voice acting, in practice the total number of cards feels lacking. Some decks have very few options for high energy cards, which can really pigeon hole your strategies. Quite a few tactics feel unbalanced, though I imagine the developers need a larger playerbase testing for data before they could properly tweak the cards to right these wrongs. On that note, the current number of cards is ideal to get the basic themes of the deck into balance before getting too creative and branching out.

Again, the world and characters need some fleshing out as well. The odd banter you can use during fights doesn’t feel rewarding enough. I want to taunt and tease you into making a wrong move, not annoy you with confusing nonsensical lines unrelated to what’s happening. The subtle facial expressions though are certainly a step in the right direction, and a real surprise to see. Perhaps while Cygames is at it, if they could implement some sort of campaign mode to flesh out each character’s story, that would blow me away. They already have the AI implemented, and it plays surprisingly well given the complexity of card strategies, so the hard part is out of the way!

Shadowverse Beta Preview

It's rare a card game gets both the monsters and fan service so perfectly in balance.

Then there is the elephant in the room. The beta had a super generous economic system that pretty much let me acquire 85% of the cards in a week’s play time. They could tweak this in any number of ways to make a profit. Fingers crossed they find the balance to not scare customers away, but still keep funded to develop updates and expansions.

My final critique is a double edged sword as it also is a bit of a compliment. When matches get truly intense and even, the AI even on an Android Note 4 can have lengthy thinking times before making a move – sometimes even stopping to think again after playing half their move. This pays off in providing smart moves that never often leave you scratching your head as to what’s going on with the AI, but I worry about the load times on lower end phones. Granted if you’re playing PvP the majority of the time, it would never be an issue.

Current State of the Beta: Great (4/5)

Pros:

Visuals blow away every free card game on the market, especially if you love high fantasy, and even more so if you like a splash of fan service.

Decks are distinct and full of personality, while being for the most part balanced.

Evolution system pushes battle outcomes further towards skill than luck, while offering some sweet bonus card visuals to boot.

The sound, oh man, they nailed it. Music, voices, special effects are all gold.

Cons:

Insufficient number of cards pose an issue both on deck variety and potential cash shop limitations to buy time while more cards are tested and made.

Mid-match taunting is wonky. Cool that it’s there, but needs work.

Stop hiding the sweet lore you clearly want to share.
