Review: Roccat Kova mouse

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 12:30 PM PDT

Until Roccat's Kova gaming mouse arrived on my desk this week, I had never actually heard of the company before. That's a shame, because there are a bunch of unique and interesting aspects of their gaming mouse design that set them aside from the competition.

The Kova is not the greatest gaming mouse I've ever used, but it certainly fills a spot in the market previously not catered to.

That weird ass Nintendo NX controller leak? Fake

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 12:01 PM PDT

If you approached the Hey Arnold!-head-shaped Nintendo NX controller leak with a pillar of salt, congratulations you correct, no-fun-having mother flubber. The "leak" was actually a fake drafted up for internet "lols" or what have you based on a too-straight mock up of Nintendo's patent. Reddit's Idriss2Dev posted the above video. I suppose someone faked the "same tree" follow up "leak" based on the same design, too.

Yesterday Nintendo refuted reports that the company planned to end Wii U production sometime in 2016. Fun times, the internet's immediacy and desperation for news meeting Nintendo's Johnny Tight Lips philosophy.

Bandai Namco warns people not to download Dark Souls III internationally

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PDT

So, hey, about that Dark Souls III international version thing!

Some folks have found out that it's possible to download the English version of the game by simply siphoning it off of a Japanese account. Easy peasy! Well, Bandai Namco has a few suggestions, before you go in. They've informed us specifically that the "experience prior to the April 12 release date will not be complete." How so? It doesn't have multiplayer, and doesn't have a day-one patch, which will optimize and fix a few issues with the current build.

Note that this is an official statement from Bandai Namco itself, not a personal recommendation. You can totally still download the game if you want and play it early.

The Overwatch beta just added a ton of new stuff

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PDT

Overwatch has made a lot of progress since it launched in closed beta form, and this week, a new update dropped. "Play of the Game" has been tweaked to highlight more styles of play, a new map, Route 66 has been added, and a number of quality of life changes have been made, including concessions for players to get into a "backfill" (read: game in progress) session, and plans for how to deal with leavers.

There's also another controversial change to Zenyatta, as his buff ball only stays on a target for three seconds if you are out of line of sight -- so no more "set it and forget it" strategies for Tracer and Genji. Blizzard hopes that this will lead to a more active playstyle with the character, so that you don't have to basically DOT the carry and not do anything else for the rest of the match. We'll see how the community takes to it.

I was just at Blizzard HQ playing the newest Overwatch build, so expect some thoughts next week.

This Doom multiplayer trailer is a monster mash

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 09:30 AM PDT

Seeing more of the multiplayer modes in Doom didn't do a whole lot for me, admittedly, but a glance at more monsters? Including an unfamiliar one? Well, damn. They have my curiosity again.

The ugly new mug belongs to the Prowler, who is giving me some serious Dead Space 2 vibes (did anyone else like its multiplayer?). The trailer also has a nice shot of a player becoming a Baron of Hell and biting a man's head off, if you're into that sort of thing. The BFG shows up, too.

It seems like people are warming up to this. I still doubt I'll invest much time into the competitive side of the game, but it is looking better and better. May 13, 2016 will be here before we know it.

The Danganronpa 3 anime is starting to take shape

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak Academy sounds like a game, but it's actually an anime series that's coming out later this year based on the popular gaming franchise. It will actually pick up right where the second iteration left off, with both old and new characters. Animation will be handled by Lerche, who worked on the previous Danganronpa anime, and Persona 4: The Animation, among others.

In terms of a timeline, a full trailer will arrive in a few days in Japan on March 26 at specific locations (Shinjuku or Dotonbori at the Alta Vision screen), and the anime itself will debut later this year.

Gears of War lead Rod Fergusson has a good take about stories in shooters

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PDT

Shooters, historically, have had a tough time telling good and coherent stories. It's a video game genre in which, no matter what goes into the narrative, the audience expects to continually kill something. That sort of action might make for an entertaining story, but rarely a truly good one.

Going into Gears of War 4, studio head and longtime Gears producer Rod Fergusson readily acknowledges that this game probably won't win any awards for narrative excellence. In an interview with Game Informer, Fergusson says "I have no aspirations to be like 'This is the greatest story ever told.'" At least the expectations are realistic.

He continued "[The reason is] it's part of the medium. When you're dealing with a game type where the one interaction you have with the world is with what you shoot, it makes it really hard to tell the heartfelt and meaningful story. I think, probably, The Last of Us is the closest to accomplishing that ... For us, it's about creating compelling characters and a compelling world, doing cool shit that you're going to love going back to again and again."

Fergusson's right. Shooters that manage to tell gripping narratives often have to rely on traces of other mediums to do it -- whether that be via cutscenes, audio logs, or something of that ilk. The video game parts of these stories usually do the least to contributing to the narrative; they're just there because that's what makes a video game a video game, and that's what's expected in a video game.

Instead, shooters have a much more reasonable chance to excel when they focus on environmental world-building, and the way the player interacts with and experiences that world. That, in and of itself, can be a story worth telling. And, it seems like that's something Fergusson is trying to do with Gears of War 4.

Pokemon Shuffle just got a massive 3DS update

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PDT

I lost interest in Pokemon Shuffle shortly after launch due to its low catch rate scheme and limited heart system, but I know a lot of you still play off and on, and I can dig that. For those of you who have stuck with the 3DS version, you'll be pleased to know that it just got a big patch, which brings a number of features from the rapidly updated mobile edition.

For starters, just logging in will net you 10,000 coins and 30 hearts. From there, you can fast travel between stages, access a new survival mode, and unlock "Mission Cards.' it's a hefty update!

Expect to see more PlayStation properties on mobile

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PDT

Sony is opening a new division, ForwardWorks, in Tokyo to turn some of its existing PlayStation properties into "full-fledged game titles" for mobile devices in Japan and Asia (at least to start).

The company didn't name any likely candidates, but you lovely people can use your imaginations, I'm sure. Step aside, Young Conker -- Grandpa Bandicoot is in town! All joking aside, I would think and hope that lessons were learned from the now-defunct PlayStation Mobile.

Sony Computer Entertainment also says it is changing its name to Sony Interactive Entertainment on April 1, 2016, which is something I'll definitely struggle to retain after today.

80's Overdrive for 3DS looks promising

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PDT

There are several Out Run homages that have been released in the past decade or so, but every time I see one, my eyes light up. Nostalgia is a powerful thing after all, though in the end, I do need solid gameplay to back it up.

80's Overdrive could have at least one of those aspects when it's released later this year, and it's set for the 3DS eShop -- right now, it seems exclusive.

Pokemon Go has gyms, egg hatching, and other familiar mechanics

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PDT

That recent, not-great footage of Pokémon Go was a rude awakening for some people with lofty expectations for Niantic's augmented-reality mobile game, but now the healing process can begin. The company shared some new details about iOS and Android title today.

The basic idea is that while you're out in the real world, your phone will vibrate to let you know a Pokémon is nearby that you can then find and catch. Some will only appear in certain areas (e.g., Water types might only live near lakes and oceans) and by leveling up as a trainer, you'll be able to catch more powerful Pokémon. Evolutions can occur if you catch the same one enough times.

There will also be eggs, which can be found at PokéStops (think real-world art installations, monuments, and the like). Predictably, they'll hatch after you take enough steps. As for battling:

"At a certain point in the game, you'll be asked to join one of three teams. Once you join a team, you'll gain the ability to assign Pokémon you've caught to empty Gym locations or to a location where a team member has placed one of his or her Pokémon. Like PokéStops, Gyms can be found at real locations in the world. Each player can place only one Pokémon at a particular Gym, so you're encouraged to work with others on the team to build up a strong defense.

If a Gym is already claimed by another team, you can challenge that Gym using your own Pokémon. Using the Pokémon you've caught, engage in battle with the defending Pokémon at the Gym to claim control."

At a minimum, this stuff sounds like a decent excuse to get out and about. I'm hoping the monetization doesn't go full Pokémon Shuffle as far as catch rates go, but otherwise, I want to try this.

[Thanks, J-Bro99]

Nintendo is attempting to trademark the Mario coin sound

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PDT

It's funny when you hear a clear-cut video game noise out in public. Like when the gas station register belts out a sound effect from Sonic the Hedgehog, or when the Mario coin noise plays. Well, Nintendo is looking to take the latter back, so to speak, by trademarking the "coin" sound. It turns out that the publisher filed back in February, and it only just became public this week.

We'll see if it pans out for them! I assume it will, and I wonder how it will impact podcasts, YouTube channels, and everyone else that uses the effect.

I totally forgot about Mekazoo, a Donkey Kong Country-inspired platformer

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PDT

I remember when Brett previewed Mekazoo last year, but outside of that moment, I kind of forgot it existed. This newest trailer definitely refreshed my memory though, as it shows off basically everything you'd want to know in terms of gameplay.

The main gimmick involves swapping animal forms, which will allow you to traverse each level in different ways. I really dig the swiftness of it, like switching to the frog to swing on a peg or using a panda form to crush through a floor. The developers note that Mekazoo is coming to PC and consoles this summer, with a Wii U release to follow.

Street Fighter V's March update is coming next week, and there's a lot in it

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Capcom's relative silence had many people wondering if the free March update for Street Fighter V -- a game in need of updates and additions -- would actually make its promised window. Turns out that it will, but just barely. Street Fighter V's March update is coming next Monday on March 28, and it's fairly hefty.

One of the major improvements is the inclusion of a tutorial system for all characters. These demonstrations have three different levels: Beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There are also combo trials for all 16 fighters for proper honing of skills.

Also of note is the Battle Lounge, which now supports eight player lobbies, including match spectating. And, there's a new two-out-of-three option for online fights for those seeking a quick rematch. Aside from that, Capcom promises the standard bug squashing and gameplay balancing.

That's the first half of the update. The second half drops two days later on March 30, and it concerns itself with the Street Fighter V storefront. This is when Alex will be added to the game, the first of the DLC characters. It's also when players will be able to spend the Fight Money they've accrued in their time playing Street Fighter V.

Interestingly enough, the opening of the store doesn't mean people can spend actual money. Capcom says that it isn't yet ready for the Zenny shop (the game's term for real currency) to function, so Fight Money is the only option for a while. To compensate, Capcom's letting players use Alex on a trial basis until the Zenny shop is ready. Once that happens, Alex will need to be paid for one way or another if you want to use him.

All of this waiting and frustration from Street Fighter V's less than ideal launch comes with a small reward. Capcom is making Ryu and Chun-Li's story mode costumes available for free on March 30. Some people will welcome that (an 80,000 Fight Money value!), but others will just be a little more content that Street Fighter V's on its way to being a complete game.

April's Games with Gold on Xbox may be the best yet

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PDT

A common complaint of the Xbox Games with Gold and PlayStation Plus programs is that the monthly freebies are never both high profile and recent releases. Usually, they're either relatively new indie games or big titles that have been long forgotten. For instance, Xbox gave away Gears of War 2 in February -- a great shooter, sure -- but, one that was seven years old at the time.

April's Games with Gold bucks this trend and includes a gem from holiday 2014 that was overlooked by many. Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive will be free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers from April 16 through May 15. The colorful, action-packed movement shooter is one of the better exclusives on the Xbox One to this day.

To kick off the month, Telltale Games' A Wolf Among Us is the first Xbox One free game. For my money, it's the second best Telltale title, right behind Tales from the Borderlands. A Wolf Among Us is gratis for the entirety of April.

Then, on the Xbox 360 side of things, it's Dead Space for the first half of the month, and Saints Row IV for the latter half. Both quality games, for sure. Keep in mind that playing the Xbox 360 picks won't require booting up that console anymore; all Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles are available on the Xbox One backward compatibility program.

Nintendo Download: Hyrule Warriors Legends

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PDT

It's another big day for Nintendo.

On the Wii U, we're getting Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut, as well as Infinity Runner. But the bigger news is that you can transfer over the characters and weapons from Hyrule Warriors Legends on 3DS by way of a simple code when the game is out tomorrow. The SNES Virtual Console has a few new additions too, including Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, and EarthBound.

Speaking of 3DS, Legends itself is out this week, and again, I suggest not getting it on an old 3DS unit. Also on 3DS is Japanese Rail Sim 3D (Volumes 2-4), Yoshi's Story (VC) and Witch & Hero 2.

It also isn't listed by Nintendo, but as of tomorrow, buying an amiibo will grant you early access to the amiibo challenge game on 3DS and Wii U.

Alienation from Resogun developer looks bright, busy as hell

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PDT

Housemarque is a pretty great studio, and following up Resogun, their next work is the top-down shooter Alienation. It follows a twin-stick style, but the aesthetics are bright, vivid, and very, very busy. As in, there's tons of stuff happening (and exploding) on-screen at all times.

The RPG bits and multiplayer aspect look really neat though, and this one will launch on April 26 on PS4.

Wii eShop darlings LostWinds and LostWinds 2 out now on Steam

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 02:30 AM PDT

Ages and ages ago, LostWinds debuted on the Wii eShop. It got some critical acclaim back then, including from our now-defunct retro podcast RetroForceGO! Since then, it and its sequel Winter of the Melodias have shown up on mobile platforms, but we haven't heard much about the duology in five years. Smash cut to today, with it surprise releasing for Windows on Steam.

Honestly, I'm curious to see if the games hold up. I played a small amount of the first one back when it released, but never got far. My suspicion is LostWinds was great... compared to everything else on the Wii eShop at the time. Against today's standards for digital content, who knows how it'll fare?

Kyle was pretty keen on the original Banner Saga back in 2014, and now, developer Stoic is ready to unleash the sequel, Banner Saga 2, next month. They announced the news on Steam, where it will arrive first on April 19.

They're providing a 10% discount for pre-ordering, and the game will be priced at $19.99, a departure from their initial price of $24.99. It's cool to see how his IP has grown over time, complete with a tabletop game and a spinoff.

Miitomo is getting a pretty big update in Japan

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 01:00 AM PDT

Miitomo is doing very well over in Japan (and everywhere else people feel like loading it up on their device), and Nintendo seems to want to capitalize on that success while it's hot. They're planning a new update for the Japanese version "soon," which includes more functionality when it comes to friend requests, a Twitter share feature, and an "Everybody Answers" event, which looks an awful lot like "Everbody Votes" on the Wii to me!

Given that I've been pretty busy lately I haven't installed Miitomo yet, and will probably end up getting it whenever it's released worldwide.

Legion of Heroes Summons Easter Event

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 04:13 PM PDT

Nexon is providing players of the epic 3D MMORPG, Legion of Heroes with new characters, content and system updates this Easter. Players can lead their army to victory by choosing their heroes, build an army, and embark on an epic adventure of war.

Celebrating the coming of Easter, Nexon has introduced new hero, Triabbits, in which events related to the newly initiated character will take place in the spirit of Easter. Two new content updates will accompany the introduction of Triabbits, namely the 'Costume System' and 'Guild War System'.

The Costume System provides certain existing heroes the capabilities to now wear 'Costumes' to become more powerful and more stylish. Heroes will gain extra attributes, and they can use different skills. Players can either purchase Costumes with Soul Gems combined with Mythic Essences under the newly created 'Costume Room' at the main screen menu, or with Hearts under Shop > Hero > March Costume Select Box (1-time only, available through March 31st). More costumes will be available in the future.

Guild War System allows players who are associated with a Guild to collect tokens by participating in Guild War and exchanging them for fascinating rewards. Players can also compete with other Guilds and aim for higher ranking with better rewards. Additionally, there are mines only accessible to those who participate in Guild War.

Users will also now be able to fight monsters endlessly with the 'Morale System Removal'. This removal of the morale system enables players to battle away as it no longer requires Morale to fight monsters in the fields.

Albion Online Cador Update Released

Posted: 24 Mar 2016 02:40 PM PDT

Sandbox Interactive, the developer of the anticipated medieval sandbox MMORPG Albion Online, today announced that their latest update 'Cador' is live. The update brings new PvE content, including Heretics-themed dungeons and bosses, as well as reworked armor and spell systems, improved mob visibility, user interface improvements, numerous bug fixes and more. For more information about the 'Cador' update, visit: https://albiononline.com/en/update

The PvE content additions in the 'Cador' update revolve around the Heretics faction. New gateway dungeons and ruthless bosses are challenging solo players and small groups on their dungeoneering endeavours. Offering a strategic element for both PvP and PvE combat, the new death mechanic introduces a knock down phase, with hit points slowly regenerating until recovery, unless the enemy kills the character before the full resurrection.

Furthermore, players' adventures become more tactically interesting with the introduction of the new armor categorization (light for 'cloth', medium for 'leather' and heavy for 'plate') suited for different playstyles, 20+ new spells and a portable gear repair kit allowing for longer mob grinding trips. In addition a new fame bonus mechanic balances risk and reward: venturing into the dangerous PvP zones will grant fame bonuses.

Lastly, the 'Cador' update introduces UI scaling to fit more information on the screen and a silhouette system, offering better character and mob visibility even with obstacles covering them.
