Neverending Nightmares creeps its way to PS4 and Vita

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST

Soon you'll be able to "enjoy" the traumatizing mental hellscape of Neverending Nightmares on your PS4 and Vita. The indie horror game was originally released on the PC in 2014, featuring gorgeous Edward Gorey inspired art, a disturbing atmosphere, and some tedious repetition.

Thankfully, creator Matt Gilgenbach, who poured many of his own personal demons and neurosis into the game, is addressing some of those issues with this port. On the PlayStation blog he says he and his team worked hard to make the PS4 and Vita versions "the best possible experience" and among the improvements, he mentions a reworking of the game's branching story paths, making it easier for players to see all the content without slogging through entire areas again. As someone who spent more than enough time in the insane asylum ward trying to see everything for the review, I'm glad PS4 fans will be spared.

I liked Neverending Nightmares even though it had some fairly significant flaws holding it back. If you're a horror fan who missed it on PC, it may well be worth checking out on the PS4. I gotta ask though, who is playing a game like this on the Vita? Diving into the disturbed psyche of a tormented man while crammed shoulder-to-shoulder on the train seems like exactly what I'm trying to avoid during the average commute.

DMX makes Dark Souls III's latest trailer even better

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST

The evil genius known as Raime has taken the latest trailer for Dark Souls III and replaced the music with the undisputed best rap song of all time, DMX's "X Gon' Give It to Ya."

The original version of the trailer with a dreary cover of "True Colors" was pretty great, but this version is even better, objectively. I love the part where X is talking about rolling, as it syncs up perfectly with the dodge rolls. Ugh. So good. Also, if you're reading this DMX, you can give it to me whenever you want. *dog barks*

Xbox Live Gold one-year cards are 42 percent off

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 01:30 PM PST

We've spotted a similar offer a few times in the past, but it's still a rare event whenever a full year of Xbox Live Gold drops below $40. Lately it seems like the only retailer with a notable deal on Gold subscriptions is discount aficionado site Groupon.

At the online spa-aplenty site, you can nab a physical 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscription card for only $34.99. While the front-facing discount is an "okay" 25 percent off to $44.99, you can knock a further $10 off by using the coupon "GROUPON10" during checkout.

Of course, there's no such thing as free lunch and the $10 off coupon has a caveat to it: you'll have to be a first-time Groupon customer. As far as we can tell, Groupon determines this by account email and address, so if you've bought from Groupon in the past with a different account, a new account via a new email should suffice (YMMV).

As of writing, over 10K units have been sold and we suspect the Xbox Live Gold cards will run out of stock well before the March 1 expiration date. Groupon won't ship the card to PO Boxes, nor those in Alaska, Hawaii, Canada (uh sorry?), and Puerto Rico.

Inside Critical Role: The Live D&D show led by voices you might recognize

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST

Marisha Ray is surrounded by some of her closest friends, but there are tears welling in her eyes. A recent revelation has filled her with doubt and guilt in equal measure, leading her to believe that her previous actions may have brought death to the doorsteps of a great many people. The tears begin their journey downward as she tries to gather her bearings, and a friend's kind words help her to steel herself. As the cameras record this poignant moment, it's hard to remember that you're watching a group of voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons.

For the past month, I've been driving back and forth to Burbank, California to interview the cast of Critical Role, Geek & Sundry's live-action Dungeons & Dragons Twitch show. One of those trips even led to a bolt dislodging from inside of my car and locking my rotor, stranding my car in East Los Angeles. I've pulled the cast away from their busy lives and attempted to extract whatever I can from there brain buckets. In a diner, outside a coffee shop with rain gently cascading on umbrellas overhead, and on the studio set, I've learned more about the culmination of effort that led to the creation of this rapidly-growing show.

Liam O' Brien (Akihiko from Persona 3, Ilidan Stormrage from Warcraft, a billion characters in Anime) saw one of my D&D posts and cordially invited me to the set. I began silently screaming, as voice acting and role-playing are two of my favorite things. After doing my best to recompose any sense of professionalism, we scheduled a studio visit so I could see what happens behind-the-scenes. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's step back a few years.

Critical Role's Rube Goldberg machine was tapped into action when Liam and his friend Sam Riegel (Teddie from Persona 4, Donnel, the best character in Fire Emblem: Awakening) challenged themselves to play D&D for their second episode of their podcast, allworknoplay. Liam had already dabbled in the dark arts of role-playing when he was younger: "In grade school I didn't feel confident enough to play with anybody. It was only in high school that I was able to make the weird...work."  Sam, however, had never played before and had no idea what to expect.

At the time, Liam was voice directing Matthew Mercer (Chrom from Fire Emblem: Awakening, Levi from Attack on Titan) as Leon in Resident Evil 6. Over the next few months, Matt kept asking Liam if he wanted to join his home campaign, saying he knew he'd love it. Busy with his young children at the time, Liam kept refusing, but eventually said "Alright, we'll play for my birthday, I'll talk [the other voice actors] into it, it'll be funny." He expected to play once and move onto the next thing for allworknoplay, but it took "all of twenty seconds to know... I loved it."

Liam went home, his heart beating with the energy associated with good role-playing, and immediately texted his friends to schedule an ongoing game. After a day of silence, he started to feel like "a jilted lover," and was already looking for another way to feed his new addiction ("oh God...maybe Matt will let me join his home game?"). But a day later, responses began to flood in. They added Ashley Johnson (Ellie from The Last of Us, Gortys from Tales from the Borderlands), Taliesin Jaffe (Blanka in recent Street Fighter games), and Orion Acaba (who has since amicably separated from Critical Role) to the roster, and began their new campaign.

Gabe Newell fires Dota 2 host and production company during live tournament

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 11:45 AM PST

Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve and patron saint of Steam, has taken to reddit to address the Dota 2 subreddit's complaints about the Shanghai Major tournament currently taking place in China.

"Two things:

1) James. We've had issues with James at previous events. Some Valve people lobbied to bring him back for Shanghai, feeling that he deserved another chance. That was a mistake. James is an ass, and we won't be working with him again.

2) As long as we're firing people, we are also firing the production company that we've been working with on the Shanghai Major. They will be replaced, and we hope to get this turned around before the main event."

The tournament host James '2GD' Harding was let go only a day and a half into the event. PC Gamer reports that James, "was irreverent, sometimes openly mocking of certain pro players, and included off-color humor and language." Though no specific reason has been given.

The production company running the tournament, Perfect World, was also let go, which according to reddit had poor production values including delays, lag, audio issues, not providing players appropriate equipment, and other issues.

I've always pictured Gaben as a big friendly Santa-like character, and seeing him publicly fire people like this is a side I've never seen before. I appreciate when upper management can lay down the law and hold people accountable instead of refusing to admit they made a mistake. Bravo Gabe, keep up the good work.

Watch out for this Necromancer's bone prison

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 11:15 AM PST

Whether you're planning to try Xul the Necromancer in Heroes of the Storm next week or not, this character spotlight video is worth watching. Learn his strengths and also how to exploit them.

The skeleton-raising, scythe-swinging melee specialist hails from the Diablo series, and while he's looking like a "beefed-up Rob Zombie" these days (shout-out to reader MSO for that one!), he hasn't forgotten how to throw down the ol' bone prison. Better keep your distance.

Halfway through the video, Xul inexplicably starts dancing. Please watch it.

Blizzard also posted about a pair of features making it to Heroes of the Storm in the next patch: more observer slots in custom games (six spots, up from two) and the option to ping elements in your HUD to alert teammates about things like low health or mana and ability cooldowns. Not the most elegant solution for better communication, perhaps, but I'll surely use the system.

Nintendo leak may have confirmed NX launching this year with Zelda NX

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 10:30 AM PST

Recently, there was a Nintendo leak posted on NeoGAF said to be from an internal US marketing budget and schedule overview for the rest of 2016 leaked by a Nintendo insider. Fake leaks happen all the time (Rayman in Super Smash Bros., anyone?), but with today's official announcement of Pokémon Sun and Moon, this rumored information has gained credibility.

The leak said that a new Pokémon game would be announced for release this holiday season, code-named "Niji," and that word was included in the file names of press assets sent out today. Nintendo has since changed the file names after people started to make the connection, lending credibility to the leak.

The source says Nintendo NX will launch in 2016 alongside Zelda NX, which is apparently going to be a port of Zelda for Wii U. So, essentially the same thing Nintendo did with Twilight Princess, releasing both a version on GameCube and Wii. The marketing budget for the new Wii U Zelda is said to be $10 million with part of that funding possibly going towards the NX version. I have to imagine this will upset some fans who purchased a Wii U just for the new Zelda title.

I hope Greedo shows up in Star Wars Battlefront

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST

Concept art for an upcoming Star Wars Battlefront DLC pack, Outer Rim, has spurred speculation about a pair of potential Hero/Villain characters, and they seem entirely plausible to me.

The first is Greedo, the green-skinned bounty hunter Han Solo shot in A New Hope, and the other is Nien Nunb, the big-eyed alien co-pilot you would probably best remember from Return of the Jedi. You may not know that name, but you'll surely recognize his adorable little mug.

For what it's worth, Battlefront already has their respective races (Rodian and Sullustan) represented as generic characters, but that's only if you've unlocked them. I'm not even close.

Here's a better look at that artwork. Enhance!

Uh, those logos look awfully familiar, UCLA School of Law

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST

Listen, I'm no attorney. I don't have a J.D. and I haven't passed the bar. But, I have played entirely too much Rock Band in my life -- enough to recognize four distinct logos.

That's why, not-attorney as I may be, it doesn't seem right that the UCLA School of Law (an establishment full of attorneys and prospective attorneys) is using Harmonix's trademarks to promote its event. Harmonix called UCLA out on it in the tweet embedded below, but there's a winky face at the end so you know it's not really serious. God bless the winky face.

If you will allow me to wear my lawyer hat for a minute (it's a top hat), maybe this isn't trademark infringement because UCLA's use isn't likely to cause confusion among consumers. They're pretty unconnected entities. But, Harmonix could also argue that it dilutes its trademark, which is, in attorney-speak, no bueno. That's Judge Makedonski's official ruling: No bueno.

Good lord, Samorost 3 is stunning

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST

March 24, 2016. That's it: the honest-to-goodness release date for Samorost 3. It's hitting PC and Mac first, followed by Android and iOS versions "later this year." Someone hold me!

It has been a long wait for fans of the 2003 original and its 2005 sequel, but looking at the end result now, I can't even think of complaining. Anteater bears aren't made in a day.

"Our goal was to create something playful yet dense, blending the challenging logic puzzles of Machinarium with the more relaxed gameplay and tone of Botanicula," says Amanita Design founder Jakub Dvorský.

Samorost 3 "loosely continues" the prior stories, though all you really need to know is that a space gnome has come across a magical flute that enables him to visit alien planets and moons, and you're gonna see some strange, imaginative stuff.

The point-and click adventure will be $19.99 on Steam, GOG, Humble, and Amanita's site. For $5 more, the Cosmic Edition adds a digital art book and the soundtrack.

PS4 will top 100 million sales says this one particular analyst

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST

It's well-known news that Sony's PlayStation 4 has had a commanding lead in the console sales race ever since its late 2013 release. Most recently, PS4 was sitting at 36 million units moved. It'll undoubtedly sell plenty more, but one research firm says it'll also reach a significant milestone.

Market analyst DFC predicts that the PS4 will eventually cross 100 million lifetime sales, as reported by GamesIndustry International. Over the course of the next five years, DFC forecasts that Sony's console will "command a dominant position." That momentum will culminate in the PS4 outselling the PS3 and hitting the 100 million mark.

This prediction has some extra oomph because only five other consoles have reached 100 million: Game Boy, Nintendo DS, the original PlayStation, PS2, and the Wii. Also, the market's more saturated now with gaming alternatives coming from companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google -- especially in the mobile space.

What DFC isn't as sure about is Nintendo's NX and virtual reality. The analyst comments that "[Nintendo] may not be ready to launch a new game system at this time." It also says that "VR is not expected to have a big impact on the console market" and that the firm's taking a "conservative attitude" about it.

Review: Lucid Sound LS30 Gaming Headset

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST

In general, if you wear a pair of gaming headphones outside of your house, it's going to be clear you've done so. The typical angular, sharp, edgy design choices that run rampant in the gaming headset market tend to clash with the more smooth, toned-down designs of high-end headphones created with music as their primary purpose.

The Lucid Sound LS30 headset, the first to market from Triton founder Chris Von Huben, seems more in line with the top end of music-oriented headphones at first glance. Surprisingly, they pack a heck of a lot of gaming-centric features just out of sight, but easily in reach.

Here's how co-op in Salt and Sanctuary works

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 05:30 AM PST

When James and Michelle of Ska Studios aren't trying to sell me a cat cafe timeshare, they make video games. Suckers like me don't just come along every day and fork over life-altering sums of cash. So, they've instead spent the last two years or so working on Salt and Sanctuary.

We've kept our eye on Salt and Sanctuary since its 2014 PAX Prime announcement, even awarding it one of the five best indie games at the inaugural PlayStation Experience. It's a 2D Souls-like that's exclusive to the PS4, and it's not afraid to show you what crushing defeat feels like. (Correction: It's actually releasing on Vita and PC too) Makes sense, given the whole Souls thing.

Today, the studio offers a glimpse at cooperative gameplay. A partner can be summoned by hiring from a sellsword. Judging by the video, co-op can radically change the way the game's approached because a duo of players can implement strategies that a single player couldn't. It comes at a price, though as enemies have significantly more health and also deal more damage.

There's also a PvP element, which is initiated by crushing an Egg of Wrath. Once that happens, the fight isn't over until someone dies. There's no doubt that Salt and Sanctuary will kill you enough on its own; you probably don't need to go seeking out extra deaths.

Listen to Dale North sing Final Fantasy VIII's 'Eyes on Me'

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST

Not long ago we saw the Materia Collective remix Final Fantasy VII's soundtrack, and it was pretty dang good. Longtime Destructoid fans probably swooned at former Editor-in-Chief Dale North's rendition of the Main Theme. Now the group is back with a followup, taking on Final Fantasy VIII this time with the album Successor. (Side note: it should be the Guardian Force Collective now, right?)

Again with the headlining spot, Dale graces us with his buttery smooth voice. This time we get a song with actual lyrics, so instead of humming an instrumental track, he lets us all know he has his eyes on us. We are, after all, the best looking guys here.

[Disclosure: Jayson Napolitano, who previously worked for Destructoid, is representing Materia Collective.]

Review: Hyperkin ProCube controller

When I first saw Hyperkin's ProCube controller, I wanted to give it a go. Most of us have been disappointed with the fact that the Super Smash Bros. GameCube adapter only works with that one game, even if I did get a whole lot of use out of it.

So I managed to get my hands on one, and I have to say, it's a near perfect recreation.

This monstrous Snorlax pillow can be yours, for the 'low' sum of $460

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 03:30 AM PST

Just in case you've ever wanted to snuggle up with a giant Pokémon, Namco Bandai (distributing on behalf of The Pokémon Company) has you covered. Later this year a giant Snorlax will go on sale that weighs 26 pounds and is roughly five feet high.

While all that is manageable even for a smaller apartment (you can probably stuff him in a closet), the privilege will run you 52,000 Yen, which is roughly $460 US dollars (which includes shipping costs). It's not quite five-hundred and ninety-nine US dollars, but you could just buy a console if you wanted instead.

Yes, Dizzy is still coming to Guilty Gear Xrd

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST

Dizzy won the character poll Arc System Works doled out last year for Guilty Gear Xrd, and announced that she was going to be added to the game at some point. The only thing is, it's been months without any real word, so the developer decided to remind us this morning and essentially tell us "yep, she's still on the way."

As well as detailing newcomer Raven's playstyle, Arc also provided a silhouette of Dizzy, so you know it's legit. For those of you who aren't keeping track, the Revelator update is now slated to include Johnny, Jack-O, Jam, Dizzy, Kum Haehyun, and Raven.

PixelJunk Monsters rated for Wii U

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 02:30 AM PST

While Q-Games isn't a first-party Sony developer, they've had a longstanding relationship, putting out tons of games on the PS3, PSP, and Vita -- so it makes sense that some people see it that way. But Q also has a good relationship with Nintendo, putting out a decent number of titles on DSiWare, and co-developing Star Fox 64 3D, so it also makes sense that PixelJunk Monsters was recently rated for Wii U.

If it's just the Deluxe version I'll probably pass (I already own it three times over), but if they manage to add anything new, I'm all over it. This is a fantastic series, and head and shoulders above most tower defense games.

Doom will run at 1080p60 on every platform

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST

According to a recent update from id Software itself, both the PC and console editions of Doom will run at their maximum potential. That translates to a 1080p60 experience. In fact, lead programmer Billy Khan noted that their goal was to "be the best looking game at 1080p in 60fps." This is partially influenced by the use of idTech 6, which makes that goal easier to achieve.

So yeah, there you have it. Multiplayer should be a lot smoother now that we know it's running at its full potential, but the jury is out on whether or not people will play it. Bethesda-published games with competitive multiplayer elements aren't really known for their long legs.

Nintendo details Pokemon Bank capabilities for Red, Blue, Yellow re-releases

Well that's cool.

Folks who were planning on picking up the Virtual Console editions of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow were disappointed to hear that there would be no way to transfer their existing original 151 into the game, but during today's Nintendo Direct, we got a glimmer of hope.

The publisher announced that when Sun & Moon hit later this year (holiday 2016), players will be able to transfer their collection from said 3DS games to the new versions. They also confirmed later that Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, and Y will also be compatible by way of wireless transfer and the Bank.

Nintendo announces Pokemon Sun & Moon for 3DS

Well, those trademark filings were correct: Nintendo is going to release Pokémon Sun & Moon later this year on 3DS. As announced during the Nintendo Direct this morning, the pair will arrive in 'Holiday 2016.' It will also feature nine languages, including simplified and traditional Chinese.

No other details were given, but we can expect them to drip-feed them throughout the year. For now, you can salivate at the prospect of bringing in 12 mythical Pokémon right off the bat.

Call of Cthulhu returns with Cyanide as the new developer

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 12:30 AM PST

[Update: That was quick. Focus Home Interactive and Cyanide have sent over a pair of screenshots and some new information about the game.

Call of Cthulhu will be an 'Investigation-RPG' (whatever that is) with stealth mechanics, as you'd probably expect from a psychological horror game.

It's due to be released sometime in 2017 for consoles and PC, and we'll be hearing more about the game in the coming months.]

It’s been two whole years now since that new Call of Cthulhu game was announced. Long, long ago, Sherlock Holmes developer Frogwares and publisher Focus Home Interactive showed off some mighty fine looking bits of art that really nailed the H.P. Lovecraft feel. And then it just vanished…

Now, two years later, the game has finally clawed its way out of the deep’s sweet embrace… but something about it has changed since it’s been gone. There’s a new developer attached: Styx, Blood Bowl and Arklash: Legacy developer Cyanide.

It’s an interesting change of events because Frogwares is also not going with Focus for its upcoming Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter like it did with Crimes and Punishments. I’d love to have been privy to some of the meetings between the two companies to find out what happened between them.

Still, I know they’re often a bit on the janky side but I’ve consistently liked Cyanide’s games. Of Orcs and Men and Styx: Master of Shadows were fantastic, Arklash was difficult but really neat, and even Game of Thrones was an enjoyable few hours. I’m pretty excited to see how they’ll handle the Cthulhu mythos.

There’s not much else we know about the game right now, but apparently we’ll be getting the full website – presumably with more info and hopefully a few screenshots – “soon.”

Attack on Titan, Kan Colle Kai sell big in Japan last week

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST

Media Create sales figures are out for the week of February 15 to February 21 for Japan, and man are they interesting.

The PS4 has been gaining ground on its predecessor for months, and that's even more evident in terms of the sales breakdown for Koei Tecmo's Attack on Titan. The Vita edition actually came out on top with 62,111 units, with PS4 only slightly behind at 61,156, and the PS3 coming in at 27,415. Kan Colle Kai (a port based off of a browser game) was the clear winner last week though, with 140,757 units sold on Vita.

In fourth was Street Fighter V with 41,990 units, then Mario & Sonic 3DS, and Square Enix's Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna. The PS4 is still king on top of the hardware charts, with the Vita trailing close behind (and only behind the 3DS with the combined power of the original device, the New, and the New XL).

Check out the top 10 below, and the full list here.

Nintendo expects to sell less 3DS hardware, more Wii U software

Posted: 25 Feb 2016 10:30 PM PST

Nintendo has altered its fiscal year (April 2015-March 2016) forecasts to account for a few snags, and one small bump. In the 3DS arena, it's expecting to not only sell less hardware (one million units less), but less software (a nine million decrease) as well. The original Wii is basically right on target hardware-wise, but will see a slight increase in terms of software sold (three hundred thousand more units).

The Wii U is also remaining the same (with low projections) in terms of hardware, but software sales are expected to greatly increase (by four hundred thousand units). Oh no Nintendo is in trouble! Except for the small country GDP it has in the bank.

Though if the NX tanks, I wonder how it'll react.

This Dark Souls III strategy guide costs twice as much as the game itself

Posted: 25 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST

How much do you love Dark Souls? Enough to buy a deluxe strategy guide for Dark Souls III that costs double the price of the game itself? Because that’s what Bandai Namco and Prima Games are offering you.

Now, admittedly, the Dark Souls III: Estus Flask Edition strategy guide does look really cool. In it there’s a 320-page strategy guide, a 192-page journal, a sword-shaped metal bookmark that has some lore connections, and a resin replica of the trusty Estus Flask all put together in a neat wooden-looking box.

But at a whopping $129.99, is it worth it? For some, I guess. Maybe you could fill the flask up with some cider and take a swig every time your character needs to heal. You’d be paralytic by the first boss, but it might be enough to forget the pain in your wallet.

It’s due to be released as a limited run on April 12, the same day as the game itself. You can pre-order it through the Prima Guides website.

Dragon Front: World’s First Virtual Reality Collectible Card Game Revealed

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 12:50 PM PST

Today High Voltage Software revealed Dragon Front, a turn-based collectible card game (CCG) made specifically for virtual reality (VR) and Oculus Rift.

Dragon Front offers incredible variety in gameplay, with 280 characters, 80 different encampments, and more than 100 spells. It also leverages the inherent social strengths of VR, allowing live online multiplayer competition while your opponent sits across from you and trades commentary.

The game's style is a blend of fantasy and dieselpunk aesthetic with a wide variety of looks and different skills and power combinations.

"We're all super avid CCG fans so developing the game has been an amazing experience. In fact, we built the game after prototyping a physical game board and cards so we could get it exactly right," explains Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer at High Voltage Software. "It's a true card game come-to-life all around the player, and with features both surprising and familiar, Dragon Front is a highly engaging nail-biter till the end."

"Dragon Front represents an important milestone for our studio," says Kerry Ganofsky, CEO and founder of High Voltage Software. “Not only have we created a fantastic VR card game that's easy to pick up and play, but we’ve also demonstrated the incredible versatility of the Oculus platform for endless replay value. They've also been so supportive and collaborative with us developing in this new terrain.”

While appealing to the established CCG and boardgame audiences, Dragon Front will also appeal to VR and gaming fans with its ease of entry and repeat play appeal. There are hundreds of variables to keep players engaged.

In Dragon Front, war has destroyed the world of Terrene Gall. To prevent the world's destruction and win the war for their faction, players must travel back in time and use all available resources to gather new soldiers, discover powerful spells, construct a mighty fortress, and call in legendary champions.
Game features include:
Unique Factions – Choose from thematically diverse armies with unique powers, traits and creative strategies.
Legendary Champions – Every deck holds a legendary champion, whose cost diminishes as his or her side nears defeat, ensuring an epic showdown in the last minutes of every game.
Collectible Cards – Construct a 30-card deck from over 260 battle-hardened soldiers, battlefield fortifications, and magic spells.
Additional Downloadable Content – The first three add-on packs are in development, each with new factions, champions, and fantastical landscapes. The game launches with two factions with more included in new updates.

Look for Dragon Front later this year, only on Oculus.

505 Games Press Preview: Portal Knights, Adr1ft, The Guest

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 12:49 PM PST

Co-authored by Corey Vixie

Earlier this week we were invited to the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco by 505 Games to check out a few of their upcoming titles – here's what we got to see and play.

Portal Knights

First up is Portal Knights – a sandbox adventure-RPG that straddles the lines between The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Minecraft, and Terraria (another 505 Games title). Those aren't just our words – Creative Director David Welch (pictured above) embraced the comparisons of Portal Knights to other adventuring and sandbox games, which is notably unusual for developers and publishing houses. The development team, Keen, has been working on Portal Knights for a few years now and it really shows. The graphics and interface are a polished layer atop of a rather robust combat, crafting, and camera system. Just like other games in the genre, Portal Knights has all the usual features like mining, crafting, exotic biomes, bosses, procedurally generated worlds, single player and co-op, weapons, armor, light story elements, and a modest level of character customization. However, this features list doesn't explain the whole game – Portal Knights stands out from the Minecraft clones in far more striking ways.

Gather your party – you're about to have an adventure.

The main differentiator between Portal Knights and other games in the genre is the emphasis on combat and the character classes. This game has combat pretty much nailed down – lock-on targeting, enemy switching, health bars, enemy variety, weapon handling, armor stats… nearly all aspects of the combat follow tried and true methodologies. Anyone familiar with the 3D Zelda games will understand how the lock-on system and camera operates, and those experienced with Terraria will jive with the multi-tiered crafting system that focuses on the archetypical Melee, Range, and Mage classes. Unlike most sandbox-y games, Portal Knights has actual classes and character slots allowing for specialization and easy character switching.

Whack it until it dies. Or until you do.

Traversing the world is also unique, which involves rebuilding teleporters between fragmented landmasses in order to reach new areas, bosses, and dungeons. Players can teleport to their home easily if they get stuck or need to return from a resource collection run, and they can teleport back to any previously visited location from the map screen.

Other differentiators include a gentler learning curve with a combination of tutorials quests, easily accessible crafting recipes, and reasonable ingredient collection requirements; you probably won't be needing a wiki with this one. The graphical style and animations also set the game apart – you really don't get games looking this polished and ready-to-go in Early Access very often. Finally, the way the world is generated and updated: David Welch explained to us that the way the world is generated is both procedural and modular so the game can receive updates and new content extremely easily without breaking every player's uniquely generated worlds.

Mining!

All is not perfect from what we've seen though. The interface, while polished, feels too mobile-centric with oversized UI elements, animations involving movement can get stuck, and, like Terraria, only one player can access a chest at any one time. These issues are really minor, and will surely be ironed out before the game's full release.

So far, everything about Portal Knights has us excited about it, and we're really looking forward to seeing how it takes on the incumbents. Reiterating, this one is different because of the level of polish it's starting out with and all of the unique spins on the genre.

Beards can be donned by both males and females – awesome.

Portal Knights just released on Steam Early Access, so if you like crafting adventure games then you really ought to take a look.

Disclaimer: Our team received Early Access keys for Portal Knights free of charge from 505 Games. Expect further coverage soon from our junior video editor, Bakerman Brad!

ADR1FT

ADR1FT is Three One Zero's first game, which sounds scary, but the members of the team are veterans of the industry. Loosely falling into the horror-survival genre, this first-person adventure game follows a lone, amnesiac survivor of a derelict space station orbiting the Earth. What happened? Well, that's the game.

505 Games Press Preview: Portal Knights, Adr1ft, The Guest

That's the Earth… contrary to popular belief, it's round.

We played this on on the consumer version of the Oculus Rift, and wow, it sells the Rift as a must-see-to-believe device. On both a normal monitor and the Rift ADR1FT is drop dead gorgeous. Playing the game itself feels like a cross between Mirror's Edge and Shattered Horizon with a little bit of Amnesia sprinkled in. The main mechanic of the game is oxygen – go figure, because oxygen in space is rare. Your oxygen supply is shared with your health, your movement, and your ability to traverse obstacles all while your damaged EVA suit puts you under a deadly time pressure.

505 Games Press Preview: Portal Knights, Adr1ft, The Guest

Your life depends on collecting these oxygen canisters.

In our time with ADR1FT we bounced around a capsule to learn the controls and orient ourselves with how VR handles, and then spent a good 15 minutes exploring the damaged space station while collecting oxygen bottles to survive. The sights and sounds of ADR1FT are very assertive – vistas are expansive, the sound is very bass heavy, and the muffled creaks emanating from the wrecked station are eerie. Sort of a side note: Much to our surprise, the built-in headphones of the Oculus Rift are actually good; they're not studio grade, but they'll give your $75 Sennheisers a run for their money.

ADR1FT is one of the few games out there that offers full freedom of movement: strafing, pitch, yaw, and roll. Controls are bound, in our opinion, very sensibly to the Xbox controller layout, and they're pretty easy to get the hang of if you're familiar with aircraft in first person shooters or games like Elite: Dangerous. The level designs are reminiscent of games like Outlast and Amnesia, so fans of those games should give it a look.

Some parts of the station hold organic materials – with VR, the leaves floating by very nearly feel real.

Again, ADR1FT is a fantastic looking game and we think it'll do well among the other narratively driven first person games that have come out these last few years. We're overall very impressed with Three One Zero's first title and look forward to its release.

ADR1FT will be releasing for PC on March 28th, with Xbox and PS4 versions sometime later this year.

The Guest

Our time with The Guest was very short and it's not something usually up our alley, but we'll try to provide our initial impressions on it anyway without spoiling anything.

505 Games Press Preview: Portal Knights, Adr1ft, The Guest

Not what I want to see when I walk into the Men's Room.

Hailing from Spain, Team Gotham has created an atmospheric story driven first-person puzzler that seems to take a lot of inspiration from games like The Room and suspenseful horror films. The game takes place in a hotel and starts off in a bedroom where the main character wakes up and finds himself locked in and locked out of everything. With the drive of figuring out who locked you up and why they did it, you immediately find yourself solving puzzles to open doors, finding lightbulbs, using tools, and doing many other things to make your way through the darkened hotel.

The puzzles we solved were more modern in their solutions rather than retro and try-everything-with-everything else; the solutions made sense, and we're thankful for that. Notably, a surprising number of objects in any location can be picked up, inspected, rotated, and pocketed for further use. It's sort of kleptomaniacal, but that's what a lot of games have taught us to do over the years anyway.

505 Games Press Preview: Portal Knights, Adr1ft, The Guest

Lots of things – even the incidental – can be examined closely.

Stylistically the game looks realistic, but also a little too dark, and the movement speed feels slower than it should. Also, oddly, the character felt shorter than he should have in relation to objects like dressers and closets; perhaps it was the lighting, but something felt off. The controls were very simplified: typical WASD movement and mouse aiming, but all interactions with objects and using them involved Q and E instead of clicking and dragging them. Perhaps this is for accessibility, but it didn't feel quite conventional.

None the less, The Guest was entertaining and interesting. We may take another look at it in the future when it releases. The Guest will be releasing on PC on March 10th.
