A 3DS game about cutting grass, Zelda style Posted: 24 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST Do you derive pleasure from mundane activities in games? Say, chopping grass? Someone must! They (the shadowy people who know our secret shames) are making a game based on that premise. The Legend of Kusakari trades the standard sword for a scythe and asks that you get to work, pal. Those overgrown fields aren't going to clear themselves. I'm not sure I would be down for this much yard maintenance, but I'm amused by the creators' commitment to such an inane concept. Kusakari is coming to the 3DS eShop later this year.

Free medieval skins for MKX players on March 1 Posted: 24 Feb 2016 11:30 AM PST I bet the Venn diagram for folks who dig on MKX and also love gruesome medieval stuff is damn near a solid circle. So plenty of people are probably going to be happy that a free pack of medieval themed skins for Kung Jin, Ferra/Torr, and my boy Kotal Khan will be released to every player on March 1. Well, almost everyone. Sorry PC players, you're getting jack squat. Trust me, I feel your pain. Read more... |
Posted: 24 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST [Yes, Street Fighter V has had something beyond a rocky start. But it is still a new installment of an old guard of a franchise. It's the original fighting game or at least the one that started it all. So thanks, Virtua Kazama, for providing a sendoff for Street Fighter IV, the title in the franchise that jump-started the aged and stalwart genre. ~Strider] Street Fighter IV… I would like to say thank you. Between 2000 and 2008, the FGC had to deal with playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo/Hyper Street Fighter II, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike in tournaments. Ever since that announcement for Street Fighter IV was made back in 2007, the community couldn't be any happier that they would see another Street Fighter game. When we saw more of it, we noticed that the game was in 3D, much like the EX series except it felt more traditional to Street Fighter II. Read more... |
GameStop's Square Enix PC sale has new lows on Heavensward Posted: 24 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST Square Enix PC titles are discounted by up to 70% this week at GameStop. No tweets or promotions whatsoever about the sale, mind you, because that's kind of how GameStop's PC department works (remember Impulse Driven?). That said, the prices on some titles are fairly attractive, marketing blast or not. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is hitting an all-new low price by $5, now only $11.99. Similar situation with its more expensive Collector's Edition at only $17.99 -- a new low by $7.50. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris has been slashed to $6 while its Season Pass is only $3 (an actual decent co-op title to check out). The rest of the Square Enix titles are at okay pricing, and short of FFXIV, everything is a Steam key. Read more... |
Persona 5 aims for 'human relations a step above' Social Links Posted: 24 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST Ah the venerable tidbit. I'm not sure if news for any other game I'm interested in comes in tidbit form as often as Persona 5, a weird combination of tight-lipped Japanese development ("please look forward to learning more when you play the game") and insatiable Persona fans going for the granular. These bits come from Persona series director Katsura Hashino writing in "Persona Magazine #2016 March," as translated by Gematsu. The game is still coming this summer! Not a fake out! As we've been guessing from the few trailers, dungeon design "is vastly different from previous games," and they all, "incorporate different stories," like Persona 4. Atlus also calls its own "phantom thieves" motif a bit of a cliche and an intentional one at that. Persona 5 aims to "combine contemporary drama with Persona." The cast are all misfits and social outcasts this time around, but Ryuji Sakamoto (his persona is Captain Kidd) is, "a 'let's change the world' character who pulls along the protagonist." And without bolstering the dumb "why do anime characters look white?" crowd, looks like the blonde Ann Takamaki (persona is Carmen) is "one-quarter American," which, uh, what? I'm pretty sure you can only be 100% American or 0% American, legally. Unless dual citizenship halves it. I don't know. It's really hard and expensive to renounce American citizenship, though. Partially because more and more people are doing it over the last five years. Ann also has some vague influence on Ryuji and the protagonist going over to the "other world" in the first place. Questions here! Leave your Podtoid questions here! Posted: 24 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST In 60 short minutes we'll be recording another episode of everyone's beloved family programming, Podtoid. We endeavor to make every subsequent episode of Podtoid greater than the last, the same reason why the cell phone you bought one year ago? A complete piece of garbage trash shit today. Fuck off with that garbage phone. And so in order to best Podtoid 324: Celebrity Surprise, a rollicking, side-splitting affair, you know what we could use this week? Questions. Questions from yous all, for us four. That's Kyle MacGregor, Brett Makedonski, and Darren Nakamura, by the way. And me, ya boy Steven Hansen. Leave those inquisitive mamma jammas below, daddy-o.

Dragon Quest Heroes II will have free character DLC Posted: 24 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST Just yesterday I thought out loud about who I might recruit for my Dragon Quest Heroes II team, lamenting the absence of Yangus. But he's going to be in the sequel after all! Square Enix put out a new trailer and footage for the Omega Force-developed hack-and-slash title and also confirmed a few good things. As picked up by Gematsu, there will be more returning characters than just Terry, Jessica, Alena, Kiryl, and Maya. The other familiar faces (Luceus, Aurora, Doric, Isla, Nera, Bianca, Yangus, and Psaro) are going to show up as free DLC. They won't appear in the main storyline like the aforementioned folks, but they will be playable in Dragon Quest Heroes II's cooperative multiplayer. Other random stuff I'm happy about: a proper dash, weather effects that alter enemies and magic, character jobs, a co-op dungeon called the "Space-Time Labyrinth," and cross-play / cross-save compatibility between PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. That classic fanfare gets me every time!

Podtoid 325: The Far Cry Primal Special Posted: 24 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST Subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or download it here. A lot of the Destructoid staff has been playing Far Cry Primal over the past week, so a few of us decided to get together and have an in-depth discussion about Ubisoft's new action game. When Far Cry Primal animal taming goes wrong, wrong, wrong Posted: 24 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST Looks like the egg cracking, chicken breast slapping How to Basic is taking some time to play Far Cry Primal (provided by Ubisoft, says the video description, though there's no indication that this is the same kind of "sponsored content" Ubisoft has paid other popular YouTube accounts for). Anyways, uh, what?

Rocket League's getting a retail release Posted: 24 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST Many folks have been singing the praises of Rocket League for quite some time now, but I was only just recently introduced first-hand to its brilliance. Developer Psyonix revealed today that it's taking steps to expose the game to an even wider audience: those who go to the store to get their video games. On a Kinda Funny Games stream, Psyonix announced that Rocket League is getting a retail release. No price was mentioned, but the game currently sells for $19.99 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It stands to reason that would be the cost of the physical version, unless some additional content bumps the price up slightly. Rocket League is quite a success story already, the type that's able to justify the risk of manufacturing a tangible product. It looks as if the game is in the hands of about ten million people, four million coming from sales and six million from free PlayStation Plus downloads. Hitting store shelves will likely prove to be a nice little boost to those stats. @GameOverGreggy [Twitter]

Ain't no trailer like a Division trailer 'cause a Division trailer got volumetric fog Posted: 24 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST I recently came across a Tim Allen grunt compilation on YouTube. That man makes such marvelous sounds. I briefly thought about trying to type out the sound of one of his grunts, but that really wouldn't do it justice. Just make the noise in your head. Go on, you know what I'm talking about. That's how I imagine some people will react to this Division 60 frames per second PC trailer. Volumetric fog? [Tim Allen grunt.] Realistic weather particles? [Tim Allen admiring the new basement he built for Randy grunt.] Dynamic global illumination? [Overjoyed Tim Allen drooling while staring at his half-built hot rod grunt.]

The PC port of Disgaea is an absolute mess Posted: 24 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST When the PC port of Tales of Symphonia came out a few weeks ago, some people argued that its poor quality was something we had to tolerate. They argued it was okay to get half-baked, unfinished ports because for some strange reason we need to ‘support the developers’ and ‘prove’ that we actually want their games on PC. When put into practice, this argument translates to eating any old garbage they slop on our plate in the hopes that one day they might give a damn enough to at least pick off the moldy bits. Well, I hope you’re opening wide and ready for another course because the ‘enhanced’ PC release of Disgaea is riddled with problems. Read more... |
Here are your free PlayStation Plus games for March Posted: 24 Feb 2016 05:30 AM PST Oof. I mean, look, it's not bad per se. There is Broforce (PS4), which actually got in the lineup by winning a fan vote, so it's what the people want (relative to the other two choices, anyways). And there's Galak-Z (PS4), which is a real cool Gundam-ish roguelike inspired by old-school mecha. There just isn't that one nice tossed-in AAA game I suppose, though the excruciatingly detailed and good art in both of the aforementioned should be enough to sate you? Unless you're a Vita sorta folk. Flame Over looks okay and, uh, Reality Fighters. Hmm. At least PS3 gets The Last Guy, one of the console's earliest indie hits that I still haven't played. Nice beaver! ARK getting giant mountable beavers Posted: 24 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST Sure, taming dinosaurs is okay, but nothing beats getting your hands on a giant, furry beaver. ARK: Survival Evolved knows this, and it has introduced the beasts into the landscape. Though beavers aren't as ferocious as other animals (indeed, they are quite soft and lovable), they can help survivors to deal with their wood. The video below shows the beavers come in a variety of colors. Maybe you prefer black; maybe you prefer brown. Just don't go trying to shave one! A hairless beaver might as well not be a beaver. Taming a beaver is no trivial matter. Experienced players will know that it takes a light touch and a lot of patience. But once you get a beaver under your control, prepare to mount it and go on the ride of your life. Beavers.

Firewatch dev: We've outsold our 'wildest expectations' Posted: 24 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST Campo Santo, the developer of Firewatch, is celebrating. The game apparently sold enough to exceed the team's "wildest expectations." According to the studio, the amount of sales ensures they'll "be around for a while," and the team "can't wait to make whatever is next." Although walking simulators are all the rage these days so some form of audience was fairly secure, it took guts to make a game like this, and the developer worked really hard on it. Congratulations are definitely in order. Campo Santo [Twitter]

The Street Fighter X G.I. Joe comic hits stores today Posted: 24 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST IDW Publishing has been teasing the Street Figher X G.I. Joe series for a while, but today is the day it finally hits comic stores across the country. It's a crossover that will span six issues, and pits characters from both universes against another. The setup basically involves Bison inviting various warriors to the World Warrior Tournament, a la Mortal Kombat, and chaos then ensues. Matchups in the inaugural storyline include C. Viper vs. Snake Eyes, Baroness vs. Rufus, Roadblock vs. Hakan, and Ryu vs. Jinx. I had a chance to check it out for myself, and found it to be a fun little weekend read. The dialogue isn't riveting, but as an action comic it succeeds with some flashy artwork, and the gimmick of having multiple villains embroiled in the plotline keeps things interesting and quasi-unpredictable. Clocking in at six installments, it's not going to require a whole lot of effort to follow either. The first issue will launch with a number of alt covers, which will cover a spectrum of art styles, from the 8-bit to the classic G.I. Joe toyline. Read more... |
Spoilers! This Uncharted 4 trailer is story-heavy Posted: 24 Feb 2016 03:45 AM PST Obviously don't watch this if you don't want to know more about Uncharted 4: A Thief's End's story, even though the last year has revealed a number of important characters (Nate's brother!) and events. And there's the whole, It'd be 'really hard' to bring Nathan Drake back after Uncharted 4 thing. I guess don't read the preceding paragraph if you didn't want to know that, either. Anyways, is handsome, old Spanish man new? I've missed him up until this point. Actually I've missed that prissy, Tom Hiddleston-looking blond that's apparently antagonist, too. Nadine Ross was revealed in December. Also damn look at that underwater section with the dope ass pirate ship, I wonder how the underwater swimming controls work (I feel like Tomb Raider kind of narrows the range of motion to make things less finicky). A Thief's End was delayed into April. It comes out April 26 with a $400 limited edition PlayStation 4 bundle (still 500GB for some damn reason; Europe gets the 1TB hard drive).

More Xenomorph info is coming soon for Mortal Kombat X Posted: 24 Feb 2016 03:30 AM PST The Mortal Kombat X Season Pass Season 2 is on the way (not for PC though, haha), and NetherRealm Studios is set to share more info on the Xenomorph in the near future. On February 25 at 5PM ET, to be exact, when the developer will host a Twitch stream on its official channel. Out of all of the horror-themed DLC so far, the Xenomorph has to be the lamest on paper. Mostly because he straight-up looks like a dude in a suit, and doesn't capture any of the essence of the Giger-inspired creature at all. NetherRealm Studios [Twitter] Read more... |
New Dark Souls III trailer is set to the tune of 'True Colors' Posted: 24 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST Namco Bandai just put out a new Dark Souls III trailer, and it's pretty much two straight minutes of unfettered gameplay. It also features a cover of the hit song "True Colors," written for Cyndi Lauper and mastercrafted by Phil Collins. Against All Odds, that's my second Collins reference this week -- I'll be here for One More Night. As always, I suggest not watching it if you want to go in blind, as a ton of cool enemy reveals are spoiled. Read more... |
PSA: This Saturday is 'Pokemon Day' at certain retailers Posted: 24 Feb 2016 02:30 AM PST Nintendo is declaring February 27 "Pokémon Day," which has a decent amount of fanfare attached to it. If you go to a Toys"R"Us store on that day, you'll be able to net exclusive cards, and pick up a free poster. GameStop will also offer a poster if you buy anything Pokémon related. Finally, the New York Nintendo store will have festivities in order. February 27 will also see the release of Pokémon Blue, Red, and Yellow on the 3DS eShop. I'll probably head out and grab the posters. Read more... |
Postal is getting an HD remake Posted: 24 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST Postal, the unofficial prequel to Hatred, is getting the HD remake treatment after almost twenty years. I was actually kind of surprised to learn the original game isn't a first-person shooter, like the more infamous sequel. This one almost seems reasonable by comparison? It'll also be interesting to see how the game is received in the modern political climate -- the press release refers to Postal as "a title which became a symbol for free speech in gaming." There's ostensibly some additional content to go along with the new visuals, like a "Rampage Mode" that adds Hotline Miami-esque killstreak scoring. Otherwise, the game's original sensibilities appear intact, right down to its underlying intent to shock. Postal Redux is hitting Windows, SteamOS, and Mac in the Spring, with a PS4 release to follow.

The Zelda: Twilight Princess HD Wolf Link amiibo works in Super Mario Maker Posted: 24 Feb 2016 01:15 AM PST A friend gave me the bright idea of trying to use the Wolf Link amiibo (from my recently acquired copy of Twilight Princess HD) in Super Mario Maker, and wouldn't you know, it worked! Apparently the figure unlocks an 8-bit Midna and Link costume, as one would expect. Curiously though, the description text seems to be a placeholder, as it's written entirely in Japanese. Nintendo probably wasn't counting on people trying it this early, but now that the cat is out of the bag, and with the frequency at which Mario Maker gets updates, we can expect it to be fixed when the game actually launches. Super Mario Maker introduces Barbara the Bat Posted: 24 Feb 2016 01:00 AM PST Nintendo is adding a new event costume to Super Mario Maker in the form of Barbara the Bat. The only reason I know who Barbara is, is from her assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and her trophy. It's almost endearing that Nintendo offers zero context for a lot of these obscure Maker characters. Like, instead of explaining it on its social channels, or even an in-game mini intro of sorts that helps illuminate her place in gaming history, it's just "hey this is Barbara!"

Review: The Flame in the Flood Posted: 24 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST Day 22. I've been drifting down this river for weeks now, and I'm starting to get desperate. That damn boar broke my arm, and I haven't been able to scrounge up the supplies to make a proper splint. Since I couldn't kill the boar, I have no food left, save for a handful of mulberries. They won't hold me over for very long, I'm afraid. And to top it all off, the rain simply refuses to stop! I've been soaked to the bone for days, and the temperature keeps dropping. If I don't find shelter soon, this might be the end for me. Such is the life of Scout in The Flame in the Flood, the debut game from newly-formed studio The Molasses Flood. Surviving the deadly rapids and even deadlier wildlife will not be easy, but at least Scout has a faithful canine companion by her side. Now if only she could find a bit of food and some decent shelter... Read more... |
Nintendo says Fire Emblem Fates is the 'best-ever launch' for the series Posted: 23 Feb 2016 11:08 PM PST Despite its confusing release strategy, most of you seemed okay with how Fire Emblem Fates was being presented, and Nintendo has just confirmed that fact this morning. It's calling the launch of Fates the "best-ever" in the series, with more than 300,000 units sold across all SKUs. For reference, it has outsold Awakening five times over within the first three days of its release. Birthright sold more than Conquest, which was "close behind." It's not even out in Europe yet! For the record, yet again, all three releases are three separate games, all individually on par with the size of Awakening, which was sold as a $40 game back in 2013. They aren't three "chopped-up pieces of DLC." The actual DLC maps started on February 19, and will run weekly through April 21.

Nintendo, do what you're doing for Pokemon's 20th anniversary with other franchises Posted: 23 Feb 2016 11:00 PM PST Hey guys, did you know it's the 30th anniversary of both The Legend of Zelda and Metroid this year? Neither did Nintendo! It's too busy celebrating Pokémon's 20th anniversary, which has already gotten more fanfare than any other celebration in recent memory. While I'm definitely not complaining about all the Pokémon love (I still remember picking it up at launch and playing for three hours straight), Nintendo really needs to step it up with its other franchises. A Pokemon themed Nintendo Direct is coming this week Posted: 23 Feb 2016 10:03 PM PST Nintendo sent over word that there will be a special Pokémon-centric Nintendo Direct in the near future. It will debut on Friday, February 26, at 10AM ET. This is right on the heels of the special Pokémon retailer event that will be held at select stores on February 27. I'd expect lots of retreaded territory, including possible amiibo restocks and the new Pokémon creature. There's also rumors floating around of a "Pokémon Rainbow." You can watch it here when it goes live. Again, it's insane how much Nintendo is pushing this anniversary. It's only February and we've gotten more in terms of a celebration than Zelda and Metroid combined. The Pokémon Company may be the driving force for that though.

If you liked Darkspore you have a week left to play it Posted: 23 Feb 2016 09:00 PM PST EA is pulling the plug on Maxis’ action-RPG Darkspore. The news was announced in December (thanks, PC Gamer) but it seems not many of us noticed… which may be the issue, let’s face it. “Today, we are announcing that we will be closing the doors on Darkspore, effective March 1st, 2016. It’s been a great run and we hope that you have enjoyed your time with Darkspore,” an EA spokesperson wrote on the Darkspore forum, before pimping out Origin. “While it can be hard to say goodbye, keep in mind there are tons of awesome games available for free on Origin. Enjoy 48-hours of fun with Game Time titles such as The Sims 4 and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare or download the latest Origin On the House release and add it to your library.” While you may surmise its not too much of a big deal, this does leave those who did paid for it and still enjoy it unable to play it from March 1, 2016. Are you still playing it, friend? Does it sting to have any publisher pull a game you’ve paid to play forever? Let us know what you think in the comments…

Sony's hosting a PlayStation VR press event next month Posted: 23 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST Now that Oculus and HTC have formally unveiled their launch plans for the Rift and the Vive, that only leaves Sony left to show off the PlayStation VR. Well according to IGN, Sony has begun sending out invitations to a press event in San Fransisco on March 15, where Sony will reveal all and allow those attending to get some hands-on time with the tech. It will be interesting to see how much the PS VR costs. Some think it will need to be priced lower than the Rift for it to succeed, but the argument can be made that it running off of the PlayStation 4 instead of the expensive, high-end PC the Vive and Rift require may mean the price of it ultimately doesn’t really matter. So, how much do you think it’ll cost? Will you need to sell a few kidneys to buy it, or only have to remortgage your house?
