Microsoft still missing the point of 'free-to-play'

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

Happy Wars is one of the handful of free-to-play titles on Xbox Live. It's free-to-play if you're a paying subscriber of Xbox Live Gold that is. Well Happy Wars was finally made playable for non-paying Silver members, kind of.

Silver members can play every game mode, except multiplayer, missions, and the Treasure map. Um, thanks? This reminds me of how upset the Wargaming CEO was over the same issue, and reenforces how outdated the Gold system is now.

For those of you that are still playing this though, a new mode was also added called Bounty Hunters. Teams compete over total bounties earned, and the mode is available until January 29. Training mode has been changed into Skirmish mode, item level-up mechanism has been changed, and some other issues have been fixed.

Earth Defense Force 2025 lands February 18

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

D3 Publisher has announced the launch date for Earth Defense Force 2025 in the US. You'll be able to blast those bugs on February 18 when the game releases for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

That's not all that is releasing, however. The first downloadable expansion for EDF 2025, "Special Ops," will also arrive on launch day, offering five additional missions for $2.99. Two more mission packs, "Mutant Rampage" and "Beyond Despair," release on February 25 and March 11, respectively, each containing 20 more missions a piece, priced at $8.99. D3 Publisher has additionally stated that these packs will be made available in a bundle at an unspecified date.

Here's 30 more seconds of PvZ: Garden Warfare

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST

PopCap's released a new video for its upcoming third-person shooter take on the much loved tower-defense franchise, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. It's short, and really only exists to let everyone know that they can now pre-order the game, but there's a zombie scientist using what appears to be a dolphin gun so it's okay.

Because of money, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare will launch first on the Xbox One and Xbox 360, with PC and PS4 release dates still unknown. The game recently had its release date pushed back a week to February 25; those in Europe can still get their hands on it on the 20th.

Killzone: Shadow Fall clan support incoming

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

It strikes me as unusual that Killzone: Shadow Fall wouldn't include a clan system out of the gate when that functionality has become so common among not only first-person shooters, but competitive multiplayer games more generally. It is on the way though, Guerrilla assures: "...we apologize for the time it's taking to implement our full vision for the clan system. To make the wait more bearable, we've decided to roll out clan features in multiple phases."

Patch 1.09, due out in early February, is the first part of that content rollout. It adds support for clan tags and "basic clan management functionality" such as making a clan, adding or removing members, and promoting individual users to the rank of clan officer.

"In subsequent phases, we will expand on these features through free game patches and site updates, based in part on your feedback," says the studio. I've come to associate clan tags with a sinking feeling that I'm about to get my ass kicked. Anyone else?

Nintendo Fusion, Machinima Xbox Scandal & 'Candy©' Crush

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 11:45 AM PST

Welp, here's your exciting video game news! Lots and lots of fun things, like Nintendo's financial problems, [obvious] lack of plans to move into mobile games, a single Super Smash Bros. screen, and the rumored new console,"Fusion." Microsoft, meanwhile, is in hot water over secretly paying Machinima partners to say nice things about the Xbox One. Alienware's Steam Machines will be un-upgradeable AND annualized, oh boy! Resident Evil 4 is coming out for PC in HD, Sony's got some great Playstation Plus deals, the Candy Crush Saga guys have copyrighted the word "Candy," Disney has abandoned copyrights for Star Wars 1313, and there's a sexy new Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes action figure.

Making games about being an awful man with Austin J.

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 11:35 AM PST

A week and a half ago on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we welcomed Austin Jorgensen to the program. Austin is a professional martial artist who was inspired by the SNES classic RPG Earthbound to start making his own videogames. Austin's first game, aptly titled Lisa The First, was inspired by some undisclosed "bad stuff" that happened between one of his former girlfriends and her father. It was stuff that would never go away, and would never stop affecting her.

What do you do when you're faced with something that leaves you completely powerless and lost? If you're Austin Jorgensen, you make a videogame about it.

Austin has gone forward from that perspective with a new game called Lisa the painful RPG. While the scenario is different from Lisa The First, the theme of being haunted by the awfulness of a man remains the same. The major difference is, this time it's not just one man, it's all men, because men are the only ones left. In a world with no women, there's no hope for a future and no reason to even try to be anything but terrible. Drug addiction, prostitution, and cannibalism are inevitable in a world like this, but so is the capacity to maintain some form of compassion for other human beings... right? We'll have to play the game ourselves to find out.

These are just a few of the things we talked on the show, and it only got more interesting from there. Why not twiddle away your precious time on this planet with a listen, and while you're at it, come on back this Sunday when we welcome Ackk Studios (Two Brothers, Y2K) to the live show at 1pm PST/4pm EST. It's going to be a treat!

Rain World headlines next wave of Steam Greenlight titles

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

At the Steam Dev Days event last week, Valve's Gabe Newell said "Our goal is to make [Steam] Greenlight go away. Not because it's useful, but because we're evolving." As we wait for that day to arrive, there's yet another large batch of games and software approved for release having obtained the requisite amount of attention from fans and press.

Most of these I'm seeing for the first time, but five do stand out. Most notably, the slugcat-starring survival platformer Rain World; cat sim Catlateral Damage; minimalistic platform game Love; roguelike platformer Path to the Sky (check out that .gif!); and a multiplayer title in which you are your own teammates, Time Rifters. Like the last few groups, lots of niche additions to Steam.

Check out the full list for yourself and let us know if I glossed over any interesting projects.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft in open beta now

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

Attention North America! Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is now in open beta. Blizzard has opened the doors, and best of all they won't be doing anymore wipes, encouraging players to amass their collection.

The open beta will roll out for other regions within the next few days, and Blizzard will be announcing specifics on all that soon. Blizzard also warns that they may have to temporarily disable open beta activations if servers starts bursting on fire from all the attention the game will see.

New trailer for Dead Rising 3's first story-expanding DLC

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST

A new trailer for Dead Rising 3's first content expansion, "Operation Broken Arrow," has been released to promote its availability on Xbox One today. It features a quick peek at new weapons, a new vehicle, and the new character, Commander Kane.

The idea of playing Dead Rising as a spec ops soldier seems rather unappealing to me. I've always appreciated that the characters typically played as are warriors of circumstance, not profession, people who rise to the occasion against overwhelming odds despite their seeming unpreparedness. A well-trained soldier in the same circumstance is harder to get excited about, even when he's sporting a totally awesome armored personnel carrier.

The next-gen tech behind Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

We saw the comparison video, now developer Crystal Dynamics shows us exactly what went down to making Tomb Raider all next-gen-y. Lara looks more lifelike than ever, especially with her facial expressions as her face was re-created from scratch for the Definitive Edition.

Lara's hair flows more realistically, her skin shows off more damage, and a lot of stuff now has physics elements that weren't in place in the original game.

The Definitive Edition is looking remarkable, though personally I don't think I'll be replaying the game as much as I liked it the first go around. Look for this one to arrive on January 28 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Live show: FlatOut 2 and Burnout Revenge

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Last week on the show, I played both Next Car Game, and BeamNG.drive in an attempt to show off each of the games' jaw-dropping physics and destruction. However, as the night went on, the discussion turned to demolition racing games of yesteryear that a lot of us used to play and love. So tonight on Mash Tactics, I decided to take a trip back to the past, and showcase two of my personal favorites, FlatOut 2, and Burnout Revenge.

While some games have come close, to me, nothing beats the perfection that was crash-mode in Burnout Revenge, or the silly joy that came from all of the mini-games involving flinging your poor ragdoll driver out of the windshield in FlatOut 2, and I can't wait to take these two classic games for a spin this evening. Be sure to tune in tonight, and watch all of the over the top, chotic, car crunching action that you can handle, only at Dtoid.TV!

Klei 'investigating' Don't Starve for PS Vita, mobile

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

Klei Entertainment had previously mentioned it was "looking at" possibly doing a dedicated PS Vita version of its survival game Don't Starve, much to our delight. Now, community manager Corey Rollins tells Edge that the development team is investigating such a port.

"Currently, a lot of people play Don't Starve: Console Edition using the PS4′s remote play, and really enjoy it. So we're looking into a proper Vita release. As for iOS and mobile, that is something we've also been investigating and we think might work, but it's not at the front of our development priorities right now. It's still on our radar, though."

Getting the game to play well on a phone screen would be difficult without radical changes to the user interface, but I could see Don't Starve on tablets, definitely. And it is something I'd like to see.

Real life in the way? Then sign up for CODnapping

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Call of Duty's real life ad campaign continues with this year's Call of Duty: Ghosts. The ad starts off almost as an homage to the intro from The Dark Knight with the whole Joker bank robbery scene. Then we see it's that one actor whose name I can't remember.

From there, the CODnapper goes around, saving people from their boring lives to play Ghosts in pretty extreme ways. It's all silly, but I like how over the top dumb it all is.

This is also specifically promoting the upcoming Onslaught downloadable content. Onslaught will feature four new maps, the ability to play as Michael Myers in one of the maps, a new weapon, and the next episode of Extinction.

Sony looking into corrupted PS4 save files

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

There are reports of PlayStation 4 users encountering error code CE-34878-0, which signifies that an application has crashed, across multiple games including Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, and Resogun. Some of these crashes have resulted in the corruption of save files and unplayable software.

In a statement to CVG, Sony said "We are aware of the cases and we appreciate your patience while we investigate." From the sound of it, the issue may be hard to track down since this is a generic error for any crash on the system. The crashes may be specific to each individual game.

According to Sony, users should "Close the application, install the latest system software and game update, and restart the system. If the error occurs again, back up your saved data, and then go to [Settings] > [Initialization] and choose [Initialize PS4]."

Nigoro takes La-Mulana 2 to Kickstarter

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

If you weren't already sold on the existence of another La-Mulana, watch this Kickstarter pitch video for the game -- equal parts silly and informative, it's one of the best I've seen. Developer Nigoro is back with the help of Playism, who is publishing and localizing La-Mulana 2 as well as running the crowdfunding campaign for the action-adventure title.

While this is a sequel, playing La-Mulana beforehand isn't necessary. The new game stars the original protagonist's daughter, Lumisa Kosugi, and her journey through the Eg-Lana ruins.

Nigoro is primarily targeting PC (and Steam) however there are quite a few stretch goals, some of which have to do with members of the development team eating curry, and others relating to handheld and console ports. The base funding goal is $200,000 which is entirely feasible.

Oh, and La-Mulana is $1.49 (90 percent off) on Steam for the next 48 hours (thanks, Scuffles).

Alienware Steam Machines won't be upgradable

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST

Alienware is coming out with a Steam Machine of its own, or should I say Steam Machines -- the company intends to put out a new model "every year." Speaking to TrustedReviews, general manager Frank Azor said "There will be no customization options; you can't really update it. The platform will continue to evolve as the games become more resource intensive."

That sounds great if you're hooked into some sort of Brewster's Millions-esque scenario in which money is no object. For the rest of us, not so much. To be clear, Alienware's Steam Machines will be somewhat configurable when ordering online as one would expect.

However, "If you actually want to customize your Alienware Steam Machine, maybe change your graphics card out or put in a new CPU, you would be better off with the standard Alienware X51," said Azor. "This particular product is restricted in its upgrade options."

In making its big push into the living room, Alienware has taken the worst "feature" of consoles.

Final Fantasy VI Android port has a game-breaking bug

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

The Final Fantasy VI Android port launched merely a week ago, but players seem to have already encountered a rather troublesome glitch, leaving those affected unable to progress.

As of right now, Final Fantasy VI will crash for a large number of those who make it to the cutscene showing the fight between Kefka and General Leo -- which is more or less halfway through the game. Because of this, it's practically impossible to continue on playing.

Over on Google Play, Square Enix has confirmed that they are now aware of this issue and that fixes "are forthcoming." They'll also be correcting that bloody "Esper" typo along with a fix to correctly display the icon for Sabin's Blitz ability.

Anyone who's bought this game been experiencing any issues? From what I've been told this port could use a general stability update.

Square Enix trademarks The Seeds of Salvation

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST

The sharp eyes of Siliconera found Japanese trademarks for The Seeds of Salvation and Luminaries of the Legendary Line last year. And now they've found a trademark for The Seeds of Salvation filed in the United States. This could point to a localization for the west of whatever this title is.

Their guess? A Dragon Quest game. I'm game. If we're lucky this will be a 3DS title. If not, well... who am I kidding? I'll even take a mobile title.

Rumor: Nintendo's new system is Nintendo Fusion

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 04:14 AM PST

As skeptical as I am about the rumored name of Nintendo's next game hardware, "Nintendo Fusion," the idea that the company would have a console and handheld that work hand in hand coming off of the Wii U does sound like an obvious move.

Nintendo News has been tipped off by "one of [its] very reputable sources" with technical specifications for the rumored systems, "Fusion DS" and "Fusion Terminal" (again, really?) which you can read here. Supposedly, these will run 3DS and Wii U games, respectively.

Interesting timing with the Nintendo's recent financial outlook, certainly. Again, I'm fairly skeptical about all of this but it's a good talking point even if the rumors don't pan out. At least this wouldn't be confused with the original Wii, which is sadly still an issue.

Rymdkapsel to see PC launch on January 30

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST

Rymdkapsel, the tetromino-based space station building strategy game with a Swedish name, originally released in May of last year on PlayStation Vita, and has since made the rounds onto Android and iOS. Early last month we heard that it would be coming to PC this month, and it looks like it will just barely stick to that.

It is set to release on Windows, Mac, and Linux on January 30, which is apparently a popular date for quirky indie games. Rymdkapsel will sell for $7.99 on Steam or DRM-free through the Humble Store, with a 10% launch window discount.

The PC version features a couple of new modes to play with. Plus Mode boasts new monoliths to unlock and play with, but I'm personally more interested in Zen Mode, which allows players to build a space station and listen to the music without having to worry about pesky enemies coming to destroy everything.

We just recently learned that the release date for Deception IV: Blood Ties is set for March 25. I can't wait.

Vita card game Monster Monpiece comes to NA, EU

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 03:15 AM PST

Idea Factory International's first Vita game, Monster Monpiece, has been confirmed for North America and Europe today. This tactical card battle with RPG elements comes to PSN this spring.

If the name sounds familiar, it's probably because we've shown you this Vita... er, stroking game before. I assure you that there's tactical card play systems and a story line beyond all of this screen whacking. You can rub magic power into cards by going at it on the Vita's touchscreen!

Idea Factory International has discloused that they've removed some images from this North American and European version. While the gameplay and story are intact, some monster girls have been cut due to their "strong sexual nature." We have a list of the cut card images below.

Also be sure to check out our gallery of English screenshots from Monster Monpiece.

Side-scrolling shooter/fighter To the Death looks great

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Words can wait. Hop to To the Death's Kickstarter page and hit play on the video. Get past the few concept images and check out the 0:15 mark. Yeah. That. YES.

This beauty comes from former Infinity Ward and Sony Santa Monica industry vets. Todd Alderman was a lead game designer on many of the Call of Duty games as well as Titanfall before moving on to create To the Death. Engineer Francesco Gigliotti lead the team at IW that was responsible for setting the play control standard for the CoD series. Then he worked as a Lead Engineer on Titanfall for two years.

Art Director Cecil Kim worked on Square Enix games Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy IX before moving to Sony Santa Monica, where he worked on the God of War series for 10 years.

These and other folks went on to team up to create Section Studios to make To the Death, which they call a genre combining,  beat'em-up, shoot'em-up, action game. It's coming to PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam, running at 60 glorious frames per second.

From the looks of it, you'll freely fly through the air in To the Death, slashing, shooting, and killing, switching to between two warriors, all while looking incredible. Read up a bit on the Kickstarter page and you'll get details on combat, customization, and multiplayer.

I want to play this. You should too.

PS3 and PS4 versions of Yakuza: Ishin compared

If any of you fellow Yakuza fans want to see how different the PS3 and PS4 versions of upcoming game Yakuza: Ishin will be, check out this newly released video from Sega. You'll want to jump to about the 3:13 mark to see the difference.

Even that first quick shot shows resolution and clarity differences. Jump to 4:34 to a detailed look at the background scenery, clothing, and more.

Jump to about 7:45 to see battle comparisons. Finally, jump to about the 10 minute mark to see event scene comparisons.

What do you think? I want the PS4 version for its higher resolution and frame rates, but the PS3 version looks pretty nice.

I was always a fan of skateboarding games. From Skate or Die to the Tony Hawk series, and most everything in between, I've played and enjoyed my fair share, some more than others. And while the heyday has passed, I still occasionally break out the old titles just to see if I can still rack up the high scores and complete sick lines in a single run.

If you're like me, OlliOlli is just the game you've been waiting for.

UK anti-porn filters are cocking up League of Legends

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

The "for the children" UK internet restriction filters are going full bore this month. You remembered to opt out, right? If you didn't, not only are you going to be prevented from seeing my erotic Sonic fanfiction (which is unfortunate, I need the views, there is stiff competition), but you won't be able to play League of Legends.

League forumer Boompje caught wind of URLs that are blocked by the so-called "anti-porn" filter and thus keep the game from properly updating. URLs like VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj and XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj are hiding the naughty bits like a Disney film. Look closely? See anything? Perhaps something that can be construed as tumescent phallus? Or, even more insidious, the accidental spelling of, "s" "E" "x." Please excuse my foul language.

The easiest fix is to loosen up and opt out of the internet filtering. If the decision is out of your control, Boompje also notes you can get a zipped file with the patch from a friend every time there is a new one.

I wonder what other innocuous -- or perhaps even vital -- portions of the internet were blocked. Apparently the filter censors any pages related to file sharing and piracy, so hopefully that's not your fetish.

Catlateral Damage getting stealth destruction and more

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST

Catlateral Damage has you play a cat who wants to make an enormous mess. That's catliterally it. Still, this first person wreck 'em up is super fun and freely playable in-browser in its alpha state.

Eurogamer cat up with Catlateral developer Chris Chung, who detailed some additions that will be going into the commercial build later this year, including a stealth mode, Cat Ops.

"The basic premise is that it's night time and your owner is asleep, so you have to knock over objects without making too much noise," Chung explained. "I feel like this mode will fulfill the desire to be a sneaky cat, and also give quite a different challenge than the current game mode."

Chung also just implemented a non-timed, "free" mode that will be available in the next build. On top of that, Chung is considering adding time trials, while he is currently working on level design. "Level design is also in progress, but I'd like to create levels in such a way that the earlier levels are somewhat small (individual rooms) and progressively get bigger," Chung  said. "I plan on creating entire houses broken up into individual rooms, so it'll be possible to block off rooms as separate levels or give the player full access to the whole house."

Corpse Party: Blood Drive website up, coming this year

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST

The official website for Corpse Party: Blood Drive has gone live. Of corpse, it's creepy as heck, complete with eyes that follow you around and a school girl in uncomfortably suggestive peril. I wouldn't expect anything less from the horror title meant to conclude the story of Book of Shadows and the first Corpse Party.

We don't know much beyond the 2014 Japanese release date. The site has some functionality still greyed out -- links to character summaries and "movie," which I assume is where the trailer will end up.

The Soapbox: The Raid Finder ruined raiding

The Soapbox title image
I don't typically limit myself to ranting about only one game at a time, but I decided to make an exception this week and speak out against World of Warcraft's Raid Finder mechanic. I was running a small and modestly successful raiding guild when this system was introduced, and my team definitely felt the onslaught of this guild-destroying game mechanic first hand. Raid Finder, commonly dubbed LFR by the cool kids in Orgrimmar, is a system that demolishes the competency barrier that stands in the way of freshly level-capped characters and normal raiding content. The system allows players to join a random raiding group in order to tackle a nerfed version of a normal raid and exists mainly to maximise inclusion in the game's best PvE endgame content.

LFR was quite popular among casual players that were usually passed up when it came to raiding group formation, but it didn't offer much progress to seasoned raiders. The gear gained had lower stats than its corresponding normal raid counterpart, but the LFR tier simply didn't need the co-ordination required of a group tackling regular raids. A void was created somewhere in between the casual masses who could benefit from the LFR mechanic and the hardcore raiders that simply did not need help with progression. My casual raiding guild was caught in the middle and ultimately met its demise at the hands of LFR, which simultaneously depleted the PUG pool and gave our members another way to see the endgame content they wanted without putting in virtual blood, sweat, and tears.

SWTOR suffers from the Rakghoul plague again

SWTOR suffers from the Rakghoul plague again
Last week, we began to see the warnings from Alderaan of wild beasts attacking random citizens in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Today, Massively has discovered that it is in fact a new outbreak of the Rakghoul plague that hit Tatooine nearly two years ago. Addalar Hyland, the director of Galactic Solutions Industries, confirms these reports after sending multiple teams to investigate the attacks.

Governments of both the Empire and the Republic are asking citizens to be wary when traveling as the plague is highly contagious. Based on the image above, we discovered that it could be spreading off the origin planet of Alderaan and might have made it to the Imperial fleet.

If you have skills that might assist in ridding the galaxy of this lethal plague, we urge you to watch this video below then report to the nearest GSI representative immediately.

Potential League of Legends patching problems due to porn filters

Will the UK's anti-sex law cause issues with patching League of Legends? According to LoL's subreddit, some members are seeing an effect from the filters UK Internet service providers have in place by default to block pornographic content for new customers; specific update files that happen to have "sex" in the wording -- VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj and XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj -- have been blocked.

Riot Games informed Eurogamer that there are no reported incidents of this law interfering with the game, but the studio is monitoring the situation. If players run into a problem, they should contact LoL support for help.

Today will see the end of Guild Wars 2's holiday break from regular content updates with the release of Origins of Madness. You like giant robots? Done. Crazy about jungle wurms? Yeah, we've got that. Dying to unravel the truth behind Scarlet Briar, the living story's primary antagonist? ArenaNet has you covered.

Players will face attacks on two fronts: In Bloodtide Coast, Scarlet's mysterious probes have riled up an ancient, three-headed jungle wurm. In Lornar's Pass, Scarlet herself is rallying her forces around the testing grounds of her new superweapon, the massive Twisted Marionette. Both threats require a significant number of players to defeat, so now might be a good a time to head down to your local Pact recruitment office and volunteer.

Origins of Madness is the first of four story-focused content releases that promise to wrap up GW2's Scarlet Briar story arc. Jump past the break to check out our gallery, which includes some exclusive screenshots!

The Daily Grind: How often do you inspect people?

You can copy the pieces but not the soul.
I swear, I'm not trying to examine you for your gear. I really don't care about that. I'm examining you because your outfit looks really nice and I want to see how you did it. I want to find out your vanity-based secrets. I want to build on that outfit to produce something gorgeous the next time I hit the streets. Anyone can play Final Fantasy XIV, but I intend to do so with a fair bit of style.

Some games don't really let you do this. I can't find out your clothing from examining your character in The Secret World. Some games reward people who are peeking at stats more than at a character's outfits. And some people really don't care in the slightest. So what about you? How often do you inspect people? In-game, obviously; if you're hovering behind Dennis from accounting and carefully counting the number of threads in his shirt, that's creepy, but not the sort of inspection we're talking about.

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Rumours over former World of Warcraft designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street's reasons for quitting were quelled when it was revealed that he's now a lead game designer at Riot Games. League of Legends also kicked off its 2014 competitive season with the first round of the Legends Champion Series. Dota 2 extended the deadline for its 3-D modeling competition until tonight, and Russian MOBA Prime World revealed plans to merge its English and Russian servers together.

Star Citizen's head honcho Chris Roberts answered more questions from fans this week, touching on topics from character death and contracts to NPC AI and playable alien races. The next stage of the Elite: Dangerous alpha was revealed to be a focused test of the multiplayer ship combat gameplay, but its release will cause the first beta stage to be delayed.

Diablo III enabled background downloading for its upcoming Patch 2.0.1 and the Reaper of Souls expansion, allowing players to download the game's 6GB pack of artwork and models ahead of launch day. The treasure hunters among you will also be happy to hear that dozens of legendary and set items have been significantly buffed in the latest public test realm patch. And a new infographic published on Path of Exile's hardcore new-year race shows that over 25,000 characters were made for the event and just over half survived the entire week.

Final Fantasy XIV is going global! Wait, that's not right; it's already global. It's been global. But it's going more global with the addition of a Chinese version. Talks about bringing the game to China took place around the time of its initial launch, but with the relaunch in full swing, it looks like the long wait is almost over.

Shanda Games has updated its official site for the game with more information regarding the first beta testing phase as well as upcoming events that will allow potential players to win a testing key. What the actual business model will be for the game's Chinese client remains to be seen, although based on most other localizations for the Chinese market, a free-to-play model of some sort seems likely.

Blizzard Entertainment originally announced plans to make a World of Warcraft live-action movie in 2006. After eight years of delays, disputes, and false starts, it looks as though someone is finally yelling, "Action!" on one of the most anticipated game-related movies ever to swirl through the rumor mill. Last night, director Duncan Jones tweeted, "Going to start shooting the movie tomorrow. Crikey! Better find my specs!"

While Jones didn't mention World of Warcraft specifically, the movie was expected to start shooting this month with a planned release date of March 11th, 2016. Dominic Cooper, Paula Patton, Clancy Brown, Toby Kebbell, and Travis Fimmell have all been confirmed as stars.

Cold as the northern winds on December mornings...
It's a truism you can see in literally any project you undertake: As a project wears on, standards for success slip lower and lower.

The Exiles of WildStar have seen their major project go on for a very long time now. It started with Brightland's rebellious activities, yes, but at the time, those were actions of protest. That was a long time ago now, down what seems like an almost unfathomably far road. The Exiles of today certainly aren't fighting to reverse policies or change the Dominion; they're fighting for a home.

We're introduced to the game's setting as a conflict between two opposing factions, but let's not mince words. The heart of the conflict has been over for a very long time now. The Exiles lost. What players will be jumping into is not the latest part of an ongoing struggle but the last stand of one faction that survives partly on the simple ignorance of its greatest enemy.

                    The Rekickstareration.
Six days remain until the second Kickstarter for The Repopulation closes out, and it's already doubled its funding goal. That prompted an interview with Kickstarter Conversations regarding the game's design principles and its second successful funding run. The development team attributed the success to reasonable financial goals and to setting the bar low and expecting to exceed it rather than setting the bar high and struggling.

The interview also goes into more detail regarding the game's design goals and how progression will work. As stated before, the game is entirely skill-based, with older characters having a wider variety of skills rather than being inherently better. Grouping is meant to be painless and advantageous rather than mandatory so that there's no disincentive to grouping up with other people while taking on content. Take a look at the full interview for more details, and if it sounds like the sort of development you'd like to support, you still have six days to jump in and help fund the game.

Players of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XI were treated to a new patch early this morning, one that makes adjustments to events, battle, items, and more. New objectives have been introduced for Records of Eminence and limited-time challenges have seen their scheduling shifted ever so slightly.

Additionally, new high-tier mission battlefields have been added to the game in the form of Return to Delkfutt's Tower and The Celestial Nexus. Each mission provides five different difficulty settings; content level, boss strength, and drop rates increase as the difficulty goes up. The patch also includes job adjustments for Beastmasters, Ninjas, Dragoons, Summoners, Puppetmasters, and Dancers.

Check out the full notes on the official Final Fantasy XI forums.

At long last, dragons will be coiled around stuff in the way that modern games don't allow them to be.
So, are you a backer of Camelot Unchained? Are you wondering when you'll be able to get your hands on the game in a playable form? The earliest build will be available to players in August, but just what will that early alpha contain? In an interview with Eurogamer, Mark Jacobs has stated that at a bare minimum, players should be able to get large-scale battles going in the game. Progression will be there but will not be fully tuned or adjusted, and the earliest stages of building systems will be present.

But what will that large-scale combat look like? In an interview posted today by Keen and Graev, the game's development team confirmed that the game will be avoiding an action-based engine, since it's not in keeping with the old-school ethos of the design. The interview also discusses the social features in the game, including a chat client that will allow players to talk even if they're not in the game. We'll know in August how many of these early concepts make it into testing and whether they work out on the road to release.

Archeblade is a new action-based, arena-based, multiplayer game by Codebrush games. I've been told that fans who enjoy fighting games like Street Fighter or MOBAs should enjoy this title. Even though I'm not a huge fan of these genres, I enjoyed the game more than I thought I would, but what it offers is not that surprising or unique.

Players will find mostly standard gameplay in Archeblade. There are a dozen or more characters to choose from, each one offering a unique way to play inside the sometimes claustrophobic maps. Each character has a basic attack on his left mouse button and special attack on his right and will build up rage as he fights and take damage. Once the rage meter fills up, a special attack can be released; the special attacks range from valuable heals to damage buffs. And as is often the case in MOBA-styled games, the large number of character types does not stop the usual character roles from being featured. Players can choose to melee, assassinate, or kill from a range.
